Central Slovak and Kajkavian Structural Convergences: A Tentative Survey2010In: Slovo : Journal of Slavic Languages and Literatures, ISSN 0348-744X, E-ISSN 2001-7359, Vol. 50, p. 37-45Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this tentative survey is to shed light on certain structural features that are common to the central Slovak and the Croatian kajkavian dialects. Some of these elements may be parallel developments, but there is a number of features that inevitably testify to the former existence of a continuum in the area that became largely de-Slavicized after the arrival of the Magyars, on the one hand, and the Bavarian Germans, on the other. It should be emphasized that this survey is preliminary, based on fieldwork carried out by the author, and that the features described below may also occur elsewhere. I tentatively designate the identified common isoglosses as “Pannonian.”

    Abstract [en]

Sources of the Reconstruction of Early Slavic Phonological Structures: Remarks on Quantitative and Qualitative Aspects

The purpose of this study is to present a critical analysis of those sources of evidence that are commonly used in reconstructing phonological developments in the Slavic languages. The types of sources can, roughly speaking, be classified into the following categories: 1) written sources (texts, inscriptions etc.); 2) dialect material; 3) foreign sources (glosses, anthroponyms, toponyms, and the like); 4) loanwords from non-Slavic languages and Slavic loans in non-Slavic languages; 5) contact linguistics. In general, one could argue that the quantity of available sources is important to a successful reconstruction, but it is ultimately the quality of sources and their correct interpretation that counts. Ideally, the reconstruction relies on a larger body of different types of sources. In this paper, not only the available sources will be analyzed but also their usage in the most representative scholarly endeavors.

Europe–Evropa?: cross-cultural dialogues between the West, Russia, and Southeastern Europe : contributions to the conference "Eastern manifestations of Western ideas - or vice versa? The cases of Russia and southeastern Europe," held at the University of Helsinki 20th-22nd August 20082010Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This volume contains twenty papers presented at the conference “Eastern Manifestations of Western Ideas—or Vice Versa?,” held at the University of Helsinki in August 2008. The contributions deal with a wide range of questions related to the status of languages, literary and cultural topics, philosophical ideas, the Byzantine heritage, political history, and travelogues in (South)eastern Europe and Russia. The book represents the most recent state of affairs in the study of the target area in the mentioned fields. The authors are both senior experts and younger scholars from the United States of America, Croatia, Finland, Luxembourg, Serbia, and Sweden. Each essay in the volume attests to the benefits of crossing the geographical, cultural and ideological divisions that have run for centuries and are still running through Europe in various forms. The book is not only a scholarly endeavour, but can also be used as an academic textbook in area studies.
