    Kampen om befolkningen: Den svenska nationsformeringens utveckling och sociopolitiska förutsättningar ca 1780–18602011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to problematize the western type of nation formation by characterizing and explaining the Swedish process of national identity construction during the Age of Revolution. Thus, the thesis sets out to investigate the political-hegemonic process of identity formation, redefinition and struggle between different political forces. In practise, the thesis develops a typology over different ideological identity projects according to their object of identity formation and their political content. Instead of classifying the projects into civic or cultural types of nationalisms, the scheme of official and counter-hegemonic ideological projects are used. The thesis also sets out to explain the character of the process studied. This is done by analyzing the socio-political conditions of existence of the different national ideological projects. This includes their relationship to the state, their social milieus and the social composition of the agents of nationalization. The thesis shows that the Swedish process can be characterized as a constant battle over the population: a battle over the national self-understanding amongst different layers of the population.  The explanation of this character has to do with two existing conditions. Firstly, the existence of a state that supported some identity projects and prohibited others. The state produced a sphere of contest by, partially, allowing the establishment of a sphere of political communication. It also acted as an authority by facilitating the different agents with the political language of nationalism as the main arena of social struggle. The other important condition was the increasing economic modernization, which caused both social mobilization and differentiation – the pre-conditions for intra-class conflicts and inter-class conflicts. In the end this thesis argues, in contrast to the modernist theories in the field, which has underpinned the importance of social communication and state- or bourgeois-led cultural integration, that Sweden, as one of the so-called old continuous nations, was not a top-down project during this particular era. It was a project created from the top as well as from below – inside as well as outside the objects of national politics. It is this simultaneousness that is the main feature of identity formation. And, its explanation lies in the emerging liberal class society as a difference- and community-machine. Consequently, the thesis problematizes the common picture of how and why people became nationals in the western states during the great transformation.

    År 1764: den 17-årige Lars Olofsson bestraffas av det svenska rättssystemet. Han förses med halsjärn inför ”en hel samling ungdom, som med tjenlig förestälning förmanades”.

    År 2001: en akademiker ur den svenska medelklassen studerar sin släkts historia.

    Vad binder samman dessa två händelser, som vid första påseende verkar så olika?

    Svaret är utbildning. Bestraffningen av Lars Olofsson utformades i fostrande syfte: åskådarna skulle lära sig något av straffet. Släktforskaren, å andra sidan, utbildar sig själv. Centralmaktens hårdhänta undervisning om rätt och fel har ersatts av individens eget kunskapssökande. Eller?

    I den här antologin får vi möta 1600- och 1700-talens unga brottslingar, dagens släktforskare, och en mängd lärare, elever, folkbildare, filantroper och lobbyister däremellan. Tillsammans berättar deras historier om hur bildning, i bred bemärkelse, format den moderna människan.

    Antologin inleds med ett förord där redaktörerna ger sitt förslag till hur bildningens funktion kan förstås i ett historievetenskapligt sammanhang: som ett verktyg för klassformering, för hantering av samhällets unga, och för skapande av identiteter. Den avslutas med en text som diskuterar hur dagens historiker bör ställa sig till en av de senaste utbildningspolitiska frågorna: bildandet av européer med hjälp av en gemensam historieskrivning inom EU.

    Ordet revolution avser i allmänhet en omvälvande eller grundläggande förändring som, i jämförelse med långsammare processer, sker under en kortare tid. I utbildningshistoriska sammanhang är ordet revolution användbart eftersom det riktar fokus på de övergripande och omvälvande förändringar som karaktäriserat utbildningsväsendet under de senaste trehundra åren. I vår bok presenteras analyser av ett brett urval av förändringar inom det svenska utbildningsväsendet. Antologin inkluderar kapitel om förändringar i 1800-talets skola och utbildning, däribland införandet av Läsebok för folkskolan, arbetarorganisationers fostran av demokrater, och en kritisk analys av föreställningen om 1800-talets skola som en del av en demokratiseringsprocess. Dessutom ges inblickar i 1900-talets utbildningsrevolutioner med kapitel som ägnar sig åt allt från rökrutans införande, den Nya matematiken, förskolesektorns expansion och 1990-talets utbildningsreformer.Boken har publicerats för att ge en översikt över den omfattande utbildningshistoriska forskningsmiljö som vuxit fram i Uppsala under de senaste tio åren. Den riktar sig till såväl den utbildningshistoriskt intresserade läsaren, som till en bredare historisk och utbildningsvetenskaplig läsekrets.
