Covering Crime: The Making and Marketing of Swedish Crime Fiction through Book Covers2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Which fiction that counts as crime fiction is both easy and difficult to distinguish. In the respect of style, theme and narration, crime fiction is a rather vague term, possible to hold many different types of stories. But if you walk into a bookshop or a library and take a look at the book covers, there is no doubt which titles belong to the genre. Crime fiction on the book market is distinctly separated from other forms of fiction. In fact, paratexts are fundamental in the formation of the crime genre. In this paper, I will analyze book covers of Swedish crime fiction paperbacks in a broad sense, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. With a corpus of around 130 books, written by bestselling authors and published in Sweden 1998–2010, a multiple of aspects regarding paratextual genre conventions and typical attributes are discussed: titles and subtitles; branding and seriality; blurbs and review excerpts; backside summaries and presentations of authors; design, typography, motifs and color choices. An analysis of book covers gives new insights into the Scandicrime phenomena, and helps to understand how genre, from a sociological point of view, operates in the literary marketplace.

    Abstract [en]
    • Crime novels from Scandinavia are commercial successes all over the world. In Sweden, the dominance of the crime genre on the book market is even more significant. According to Swedish book trade magazine Svensk Bokhandel, twelve of the top twenty books in the bestseller charts of fiction in 2010, were domestic crime novels. This has started intensive debates, where crime novels are blamed for out-competing other genres. Domestic crime fiction has had a commanding position of the commercial side of Swedish publishing business in the 2000s, but this has not always been the case. When did this literary genre-takeover take place? How did it take place? How can it be explained? Even though some research concerning Scandinavian crime fiction has been carried out over the last couple of years, no one has mapped the book market phenomenon as such. This article aims to fill this gap by offering a neutral and extensive description on the role and position of crime fiction in Swedish publishing between 1977 and 2010.

Deckarboomen under lupp: Statistiska perspektiv på svensk kriminallitteratur 1977–20102012 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the boom in Swedish crime fiction from a statistical perspective. Theoretical input and methods are derived from the fields of sociology of literature, book history, and bibliometrics. With a quantitative approach, all Swedish crime fiction published in 1977–2010 (just over 1,700 titles) are compiled to identify patterns over time. The main source for bibliographical information and delimitations is “Deckarkatalogen” (an annual bibliography published by the Swedish crime fiction magazine Jury).

Main results: Nearly 2.5 times as many first editions of crime fiction were issued in Sweden in the first decade of the 2000s, compared to the 1980s. The increase was particularly vast in the years following the turn of the millennium. All kinds of publishers have contributed to this expansion, but two types stand out: major publishers and self-publishers. The share of crime fiction written by women increased in the same period of time from between 10 and 20 percent to just over 30 percent. Furthermore, the gender balance among the bestsellers of crime fiction in the 2000s is nearly even. Crime fiction has been extremely dominant on the bestseller charts in Sweden during the 2000s, and the genre outnumbers all other fiction taken together. A few major publishing groups are publishing a growing share of the crime fiction bestsellers. Mostly newer authors are bestsellers in the 2000s, and the time from debut to commercial success is shrinking.

In the conclusion it is argued that crime fiction can be seen as the normal literature – a term coined by Franco Moretti – among bestsellers of fiction in Sweden during the first decade of the 2000s. The study gives insight into the interplay between authors, publishers, and the reading public, and helps us understand how genre, from a sociological point of view, operates on the literary market.

    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the successful Swedishcrime writers and the gendered aspects of how they are marketed towards thereaders in the 2000s. The purpose is to show how Swedish publishers follow distinctgender patterns in their marketing of crime fiction, and to discuss how thisaffects the responses to male and female crime novelists in cultural and mediallandscapes. The empirical material consists of 153 Swedish crime novels, published in paperback between 1998 and 2011. Theoretically, the article connectsto the field of book history insofar as the printed book itself is seen asimportant when it comes to how literary works are perceived by their readers. The results show that male and female authors of crime fiction in general havebeen marketed recognizably different in almost all possible ways. In the books’extra materials and other author-centred peritexts, female authors areassociated with the private and the family related. Male authors, on the otherhand, are most often described as proficient, well writing and engaged insocial criticism. Furthermore, the book covers are clearly gendered: covers bymale authors are darker, more serious and more traditional to the crime genre;covers by female authors are brighter, more “fun” and reminiscent of chick litrather than of traditional crime fiction. The main conclusion is that thegender gap shown in these paperbacks support and maintain the stereotype thatmale and female authors write different types of crime fiction, with maleauthors being valued the most. The paratextual division of male and femalecrime writers, thus, upholds the established and gendered hierarchy in thegenre.

Död och dagishämtningar: en kvantitativ analys av det tidiga 2000-talets svenska kriminallitteratur2017Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates contemporary Swedish crime fiction through a quantitative content analysis of 116 Swedish crime fiction novels published 1998–2015 and written by the most successful authors in the genre. The study discusses killers, murder motives, victims, murder methods, and detectives and other protagonists, with the aim of identifying social patterns and recurring themes.

In general, these novels are dominated by female protagonists and put much emphasis on portrayals of the main characters in their struggle to combine work and family life. This simultaneous shift to a female perspective and a focus on everyday life stands out in comparisons to earlier Swedish crime fiction. The novels are furthermore permeated by a partial realism, where depictions of everyday life, settings and contemporary details are realistic and concrete, while depictions of killers, murder motives, murder methods and victims most often are imaginative, spectacular and sensational, and thus in most cases show few similarities with actual crimes in contemporary Sweden. Also, the selection is characterised by a dominance of normality, where main characters and innocent victims affirm “normality” (they are most often middle class, white, heterosexual Swedes without immigrant background), whereas killers and unsympathetic victims are depicted as deviants in stark contrast to normality.

The content often seems to be chosen by how well it works in relation to plot lines and genre requirements. Therefore, it is argued that both contextualising and functionalistic perspectives need to be taken into account when analysing depictions of society in contemporary crime fiction. With such a dual-vision approach, the ostensible realistic social criticism in the genre to a high extent appears to be a story about the genre.

Genres at Work: A Holistic Approach to Genres in Book Publishing2021In: European Journal of Cultural Studies, ISSN 1367-5494, E-ISSN 1460-3551, Vol. 24, no 3, p. 757-776Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a holistic approach to the study of genres in book publishing that includes formal aspects of literary texts, marketing strategies and categorisations used by producers, and perspectives on how these labels are perceived by readers and critics, as well as a temporal and spatial understanding of how genres evolve. The empirical point of departure is the recent boom in Nordic Noir, exemplified by the following three Swedish authors successful in the 21st century: Lars Kepler, Jens Lapidus and Camilla Läckberg. The discourses surrounding Nordic Noir and how these authors and their writing relate and get related to it are used as an example of how book-trade genres operate in multiple and complex ways, and how genres produce effects that move back and forth among creators, producers and consumers. It proposes a twofold model, where genres are understood as constituted by all of the relations between these areas together. Through Kepler, Lapidus and Läckberg, the article shows how Nordic Noir has emerged over the years; how it changes with its publishing context; and how the genre’s internal discrepancy between literary content and marketing and reception is a crucial component in understanding Nordic Noir.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates consumption patterns in digital subscription-based streaming services for books by means of a large-scale dataset derived from Storytel. The aim is twofold: to empirically discuss how book consumption in the commercial top segment diverges between print books and digital streaming platforms, and to conceptually show the usefulness and considerable possibilities with computational approaches for digital publishing studies and contemporary book history. This is accomplished by introducing the concept of the beststreamer, and the average finishing degree measure. The empirical output shows large differences between print bestsellers and digital beststreamers, both in terms of genre distributions, finished streams, and levels of completion. These results are discussed in relation to factors fostering consumption patterns, such as platform design, pricing models, supply, marketing, customer base, and media-specific features of the audiobook.

Killer Plotting: Typologisk intriganalys utifrån fjärrläsningar av samtida svenska kriminalromaner2017In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap, ISSN 1104-0556, E-ISSN 2001-094X, no 3-4, p. 41-68Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article updates and extends Tzvetan Todorov’s classical typology of crime fiction from 1971 – where he separates plots driven by curiosity from plots driven by suspense – through a distant reading of 113 commercially successful novels of Swedish crime fiction from the early 2000s. Furthermore, it aims to initiate a methodical discussion in literary studies concerning the benefits of using semi-big materials (instead of either very big or very small ones), and in combining computer-aided and traditional methods.

The method used – killer plotting – is a word frequency count of all the times the murderer in each novel is mentioned in the plot related to the point in the plotline where the killer is revealed to the reader (and the protagonists). These rather simple measures manage to capture the basic structures of crime novels: clues, encounters with the hidden murderer, revealing, dramatic finale.

The results show that a vast majority of the novels in the selection can be classified into one of six different plot types of crime fiction depending on how the killer appears: 1) the all-novel present murderer; 2) the seemingly insignificant murderer; 3) the suspected murderer; 4) the out-of-the-blue murderer; 5) the second murderer twist; and 6) the non-hidden murderer. All six types lie in the range between the two poles presented by Todorov, which demonstrates that contemporary Swedish crime fiction is dominated by recurring narrative structures that in various ways combine suspense and curiosity.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with Swedish crime fiction and its successes on the Swedish book market in the early 2000s. The genre’s expansion, marketing and literary content is mapped and analysed in three studies that together paint a thorough picture of this literary phenomena in Swedish book trade.

In study no 1 the development of the genre in Sweden in the last 40 years is discussed from a quantitative perspective. With the base in bibliographies of Swedish crime fiction publication trends are analysed in several ways and concerning topics such as genre growth, gender balance, publishing houses, successful authorships, bestsellers and library lending. The results include: a significant genre expansion in the 2000s; a great dominance for the genre on the bestseller charts in the 2000s; and a shift in the author group, from male dominance to even gender balance.

In study no 2 the marketing of the genre is examined through an analysis of book covers, titles and other elements in the concrete packaging of just over 150 Swedish crime fiction paperbacks. With book history as an important theoretical influence book covers and other peritextual elements are understood as a significant part of the marketing of the genre, but also – and wider – as of crucial importance for how genres themselves are established, withheld and re-negotiated in the interplay between different actors in the society of literature – publishers, authors, booksellers, readers.

In study no 3 a quantitative content analysis of 116 Swedish crime novels published 1998–2015 is used to chart and discuss recurring themes and tropes within the genre. Focus is primarily directed towards what is understood as the most central parts of crime fiction: murderers and their motives; methods used in committing murder; victims of murder; and detectives and other protagonists. The results include: a distinct dominance of female protagonists; a partial realism, where depictions of everyday life in general is realistic while the murder plots are spectacular and sensational; and a dominance of normality, where main characters and innocent victims confirms normality, while killers and unsympathetic victims are depicted as deviants in stark contrast with normality.

The Crime Boom Investigated : Statistical Perspectives on Swedish Crime Fiction, 1977–2010

This study examines how Swedish crime fiction has been packaged in the book trade in the early 2000s. The main material consists of 153 Swedish crime fiction paperbacks published in Sweden 1998–2011 and written by the most successful authors of crime fiction of that period. The term peritext, coined by Gérard Genette, is used to cover all aspects of books that affect the reader apart from the literary work itself. Five empirical chapters focus on five different aspects: 1) cover design; 2) titles and subtitles; 3) citations and blurbs; 4) acknowledgements; and 5) author presentations, extra material and advertising. It is shown that the packaging of crime fiction is crucial when it comes to genre formation and author branding. Among the results are how these “murder packages” have become increasingly elaborated over time, that male and female writers of crime fiction have been presented in distinctly different ways, and how the reliability and realism of a story often is emphasized in the peritext.
