Från ung rabulist till humanioras starke man: Ideal och legitimitetsstrategier hos den unge Erik Lönnroth2013In: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 133, no 2, 145-173 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

From rowdy youngster to front man of the establishment. Ideals and strategies of the young Erik Lönnroth

This article investigates the ideals and strategies of Erik Lönnroth, one of the leading and most influential scholars in Swedish humanities in the twentieth century. The focus is on his career during the interwar years and the article seeks to explain the change in Lönnroth’s scholarly ideals after he established himself in the upper echelons of the profession. His early ideal was the presentation of far-reaching reevaluations of Swedish medieval history. To do this he adhered to the ideal of historical synthesis, which was presented as an alternative to both narrow empirical specialization and ideological use of history. This ideal corresponded to a certain liberal aristocratic culture prevalent among academics in Gothenburg in the interwar years. After he established himself at the professorial level Lönnroth was recruited to the Swedish liberal morning paper Dagens Nyheter, along with other prominent liberal intellectuals of the time, such as political scientist Herbert Tingsten and philospher Ingemar Hedenius. In this new environment Lönnroth deserted his former ideal of historical synthesis and supported the ideal of specialization, which was more in tune with the general style of research in the postwar years. Lönnroth’s reorientation can also be explained as an attempt to “cover his tracks” since his synthetical interpretations came under attack by more specialized researchers. The impulse behind Lönnroth’s reorientation is therefore symptomatic of the gradual transformation of historiography from a literary genre to a modern research discipline.

Hjälten mellan myt och historia: en studie av Torgny Segerstedts liv efter döden2017In: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 137, no 2, 195-227 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Hero between myth and history: A study of Torgny Segerstedt’s posthumous reputation

History and myth are always entangled in hero-worship. Historical analysis needs to understand this entanglement and to develop clearer means of demarcation between history and myth. Temporality, i.e. the hero’s connection to time, is a methodological device that can be used to separate historical and mythical understandings of heroism. Historical time is fundamentally contingent because it divides time into discrete non-related contexts, whereas mythological time is stable and regenerative and thereby offers up objects for identification.

This article studies the posthumous reputation of the scholar and publicist Torgny Segerstedt (b. 1876) from 1945 to present times. During the Second World War Segerstedt was arguably Sweden’s most explicit opponent to Nazism. But his standing was very ambiguous since the only course of action embedded in his program was Sweden´s involvement in the war. The study concludes that both historical and mythological understandings of Segerstedt have existed from his obituaries and onwards, but that the general tendency is for the historical understanding of Segerstedt, including academic research, to completely give way to myth. Academic dissertations dealing with Segerstedt have been largely ignored in public discourse. In contrast, mythical understandings of Segerstedt have been supported by two privately funded foundations. It seems that from the 1990’s, Segerstedt has become the ideal object of identification for many journalists.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the Boundary Work conducted around law as an academic field of knowledge in the 1930s and 1940s in Sweden. This period designates a formative phase for many research disciplines. The boundaries negotiated and drawn then are still, to a large extent, regarded as valid. The purpose of the article is therefore to give a historical and political perspective on the present boundaries of legal science. The article argues that legal science lacked a strategic discipline builder and that political scientist Herbert Tingsten and philosopher Ingemar Hedenius were able to colonize the societal relevance of law as an academic discipline for the sake of their own disciplines, thus rendering legal science a discipline with narrow boundaries, isolated and subordinate to the discipline of philosophy. It is argued that this was achieved by representing the knowledge regime of positivism, a philosophy of science aiming at enforcing the formal unity of academic disciplines in a hierarchic formation where the place at the top is held by philosophy.
