Baltic biographies at historical crossroads2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book brings together life stories from five generations of Balts, living through the diverse and recurring transformations of the twentieth century: occupations, war, independence, totalitarianism, and democratic rule and market economy. The twentieth century history of the Baltic countries has often been deeply tragic. Lying on the coastline of the Baltic Sea, these rather small but strategically well located territories have historically found themselves in the middle of many power struggles between larger states, empires and other power-holders: the Teutonic Knights, Swedish kings, Tsarist Russia, Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union. Today, they are once again forced to stand up to the Russian Federation.

Biographical interviewing is a field focused on individuals, and on how those individuals choose to re-create and present their lived lives, make meaning of it through the narratives they tell. To interpret the biographical narrations of Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians, shaped by complex and controversial historical background, the authors use Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of social and cultural capitals, the principles of Erving Goffman’s framing analysis and Alessandro Portelli’s distinction of private and public spheres, Anton Steen’s investigations of post-Socialist elites and Piotr Sztompka’s theory of cultural trauma, etc. Given analyses of particular biographical narrations are supplemented by brief historical and sociological overviews, which allow the reader to better understand the contexts of lived lives, and the mental atmosphere in which the interviews were conducted.

    Det hotade universitetet2016Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

A political culture in exile: The Estonian inter-war generation in Canada and Sweden2006In: Journal of Baltic Studies, ISSN 0162-9778, E-ISSN 1751-7877, Vol. 37, no 1, 68-93 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on cultural responses to institutional change. Through a value survey about civic values and perceptions of the state, predictions from rationalism and culturalism are tested on a generation of Estonians. Members of this inter-war generation were socialized during the first Estonian republic in the 1920s and 1930s, but then spent their adult lives in exile in Sweden and Canada. The survey, which was performed in 1998 when the respondents born between 1915–25 were well into their seventies and eighties, shows substantially stronger approval of democratic opportunities and public institutions among Canadian-Estonians in comparison to the Swedish-Estonians. Theoretically, the conclusion drawn is that a modification of the cultural theory resting on the importance of cultural correspondence between the originally socialized culture in the inter-war period and that of the host country is needed in order to make sense of this cultural response pattern.

Down the Slippery Slope: The Perils of the Academic Research Industry2013In: Transformations in Research, Higher Education and the Academic Market: The Breakdown of Scientific Thought / [ed] Sharon Rider, Ylva Hasselberg, Alexandra Waluszewski, Dordrecht: Springer Netherlands, 2013, 125-135 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present chapter attempts to describe the move into what can be called the era of the academic research industry. To write and “produce” more in less time has become a value in itself, rhetorically accompanied by claims that it needs to be “cutting edge” and to achieve excellence. Because research is much like performing arts, the advantages of scale, however, are illusory. The equation of more and better research in less time is hard to achieve because of the inherent logic of creativity in research: the time-consuming activities of experimentation and failure. The overall perils of the industrialization of academic research lie in that these insights, that we need to allow for risk-taking and the acceptance of genuine uncertainty, are buried in all the more elaborate efforts of time and space management that deceptively make us feel as if we are in control. As a consequence of the “slippery-slope” effect, where you do not notice each individual step along the treacherous path, academic researchers more or less tacitly accept these efficiency practices and norms evolving within the research industry, practices that actually may destroy or irrevocably damage necessary preconditions for original research, innovation, and discovery.

    Abstract [en]

European universities are being shaken by two revolutions. One is a radical change in the way research is funded, the other is the increased emphasis on the teaching role of the universities. This interview study examines what effects these radical institutional changes have had on academic freedom. Based on a small number of in-depth interviews with Swedish researchers in various disciplines, different posts, active either at an ancient or a new university, the study explores the concept and content of academic freedom, the current prospects for its survival and the effect of changes in funding on the content of research and research process as such. The results suggest that the institutional changes, not least in the way the funding system is organised, are having a determinate impact on the behaviour of academics, while academic freedom as a norm still thrives in the research community as a whole.

    Abstract [en]

The study by Ceci et al. shows that academic behavior associated with the core principles of intellectual freedom is more shaped by institutional incentives than by organizational culture. From an organizational theoretical point of view, this is quite an unexpected finding, not least because we do believe universities to be fairly strong and explicit cultures that should be successful in socialization.
