    Abstract [en]

I den här boken är utgångspunkten att den akademiska teologin har en systematisk och konstruktiv uppgift. Teologin skall inte enbart granska hur människor tror. Tron måste sättas in i ett sammanhang där den kan bedömas, kritiseras och omformuleras.

    Abstract [sv]

Atheism as Culture and Condition: Nietzschean Reflections on the Contemporary Invisibility of Profound Godlessness2012In: Approaching Religion, ISSN 1799-3121, E-ISSN 1799-3121, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 75-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I focus on a difficulty in our contemporary discourse about atheism. My rough thesis is that certain important problems stem from the fact that contemporary culture at large is already fine tuned with many of the crucial ‘virtues’ that are held forth strongly by leading atheists. Thus, one might perhaps claim that the New Atheists are mostly preaching to the already converted. However, the main problem with this picture is that a ‘cultural atheism’, or secularism, of the kind that I have in mind is far from identical with the ‘ideological atheisms’ of the contemporary debates. The theologians who respond to atheists are extremely frustrated and the debate is asymmetrical. If there is some sort of cultural identity between these camps it is constituted by an invisible cultural logic that expresses a profound godlessness beyond ideological distinctions. I will focus on the Swedish context and its peculiarities in order to theorise this cultural logic. In dialogue with Friedrich Nietzsche, I develop a notion of moral emptiness and connect it to the idea of profound godlessness. I then suggest that his creative and affirmative criticism of nihilism is an interesting opening for further debate.

Bildstrider: Om "teologin" i Muhammedkarikatyrerna och Ecce Homos Jesusbilder2010In: Lambda Nordica: Tidskrift om homosexualitet, ISSN 1100-2573, Vol. 15, no 1-2, p. 104-122Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

This article juxtaposes two important and highly controversial public events that involved images, the Muhammad caricatures (cardoons published in the Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten 2005) and the images of Jesus in the exhibition called Ecce Homo (by the Swedish photographer Elisabeth Ohlson, first shown in 1998). These controversial events are compared and evaluated in terms of theological implications. Several things connect the two events, especially the public reactions on the images. However, it is argued that the differences are more interesting, since they describe two ways of being related to a religious discourse. The cartoons are drawn "against" Islam, from a position within a Christian cultural context, while the photograps of Ecce Homo form a kind of initiated Christian comment on Christianity (a theological statement), issued from a position within the Christian context. The two artistic acts, the heated debates and the reactions are interpreted in light of this "cultural assymetry", and they are understood as very different in their respective theological significance.

Cultural Materiality and Spiritual Alienation: Blond, Nietzsche and Political Theological Materialism2013In: Political Theology, ISSN 1462-317X, E-ISSN 1743-1719, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 219-234Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article takes its point of departure in Phillip Blond’s Christian criticism of secular materialisms and the failure of modern thought to appreciate the true materiality of creation. He challenges secular thought and returns to a combination of Greek and Christian Trinitarian thought, in order to reach for a new ground for political theology. Blond’s Christian ontological claims are contested, but an aspect of them is brought into the context of cultural creation and related to questions of the spiritual dimension of cultural arte- facts in a secular setting. Against the background of Friedrich Nietzsche’s struggle with the difficulty of singling out a pure secular culture from the old and (in his view) stifling religious heritage in society and culture, this article suggests that a radical notion of human intentional (but finite) cre- ation, analogous to Blond’s idea of God’s infinite creative intention, may be helpful for a construction of a materialistic critical theory about contingent spiritual obstacles to political change.

    Abstract [en]

“The Commitment of Research. A Theological Perspective on Science, Interest and Usefulness”

There is an ongoing debate on the usefulness and social relevance of academic research. This debate is dominated by economic arguments. The academy harbors several self-interpretations of its own relation to society. This article delineates two important models of self-interpretation, which I call ‘the indirect model’ and ‘the distanced model’. These models are roughly related to an idea of enlightenment and truth (the indirect model) and to ideas about an economic raison d’etre of science (the distanced model). I argue that these two models are in conflict, but in this conflict there is also a cunning division of labor between them, leading to a unsatisfactory situation. In opposition to this, I suggest a third model, ‘the direct model’, molded on insights from the situation of theology and religious studies. In order to suggest a different way of being academically responsible in society, I draw on Friedrich Schleiermachers understanding of theology as a so called positive, or practical, academic discipline.

Avhandlingen söker svara på två förberedande frågor: hur man kan tolka Theodor W. Adornos kritiska teori idag? Samt hur en sådan tolkning kan göras relevant för aktuell teologisk problematik?

    Abstract [en]

In this chapter I discern three modes of atheism in the contemporary debate. I call them positive atheism, friendly atheism and struggling atheism. From a philosophical point of view, these three modes represent three very different approaches to basic questions implicated by atheistic beliefs, such as the theoretical question of Gods non-existence, the political question of the social danger of religious life in society, and moral question of tolerance, etc. The purpose of the paper is to clarify some of these differences in order to facilitate a more advanced and multilayered debate between atheism and religious belief in God; one that respects the rich historical relations between humanism, religion and theology. I am especially interested in the social and political harshness that often haunts the debate on atheism and the existence of God. To approach this problem I relate to Richard Rortys’ notion “anticlericalism”. I have borrowed the notion “friendly atheism” from William L. Rowe. Rowe has his own threefold topology of variants of atheism, and I relate some of my notions to his typology, although the outcome is very different from his.
