    Abstract [en]

    Polymer electrolytes based on triblock copolymers of ethylene oxide (EO)/propylene oxide (PO)/ethylene oxide of moderate molecular weight and narrow block-length distributions, doped with M(CF3SO3)(2) and M[N(CF3SO2)(2)](2) (M = Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba), LiCF3SO3 and LiN(CF3SO2)(2) have been investigated using infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and conductivity measurements. The effects of varying the EO/PO block length, composition and temperature on the phase behaviour, ion-pair formation and conductivity of the polymer electrolytes have been studied. A two-phase microstructure has been observed. Ion pairing occurs for the triflate salts and the amount was found to be sensitive to the relative block sizes rather than the molecular weight of the copolymer.     Abstract [en]

    Diffusion measurements have been performed by an electrochemical potentiometric method on polycrystalline synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) and bornite (Cu5FeS4) in the temperature range 5-50 degrees C. The chemical ((D) over tilde) diffusion coefficients are as follows: chalcocite 38.7 exp(-5600/T); chalcopyrite 15.4 exp(-6000/T) and bornite 14.5 exp(-4900/T).

    Diffusion in Copper Sulphides: An experimental study of chalcocite, chalcopyrite and bornite1996Report (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

    Diffusion measurements on three copper-containing sulphides have been performed by an electrochemical potentiometric method. -- The diffusion coefficient for chalcocite is in good agreement with values found previously, and a reasonable agreement is also found for chalcopyrite and bornite when our data are compared with values acquired at much higher temperatures with a different technique. The activation energies are remarkably similar for the three sulphides, considering that their relative errors are of a 10% magnitude, which indicates that the bonding strengths and the diffusion mechanisms are similar.

    The total electron density of a water molecule differs significantly from the superposition of the O + H + H spherical-atom densities by way of bonding and lone-pair electron charge accumulations. Such non-spherical electron density features on neighbouring molecules typically lie in the range 2-4 Angstrom apart in liquid water. Their influence on the diffracted coherent X-ray intensity for liquid water has been simulated, based on molecular dynamics data and non-spherical atomic electron deformation functions, for the water molecule. It is found that in the liquid water sample, the deformation densities on different molecules interfere significantly in the scattering process, but the effect is largely eliminated because of statistical cancellations over Q vector directions and time, The result is that the influence from the deformation densities on g(r) is large for intramolecular distances, but small for intermolecular distances.

    Five N-substituted derivatives of 1,2-methylene-3,4-aziridino 2-phenylsulfonyl cycloalkanes (3a-e) were prepared from their corresponding epoxy cyclopropanes via ring opening of the epoxide by sodium azide and subsequent triphenylphosphine induced cyclization. BF3-induced reaction of compounds 3a-e resulted in a rearrangement via a cyclopropyl carbinyl cation intermediate. In the case of tosylaziridine 3c bicyclic product 5, (tropane skeleton), was formed as the major product. With carbamate derivative 3a exclusive rearrangement to fluorocyloheptene 7 took place.
