    Abstract [en]

    This thesis elucidates a small part of the library history of the popular education movement in Sweden. The intention is to contribute to the knowledge about study circle libraries in a forest parish in the county of Jämtland, a subject which has not been studied to any great extent. The study circle library was a library type unique to Sweden, sponsored by government subsidy. Three study circle libraries that existed in the forest parish of Nyhem in eastern Jämtland are studied in depth: One library is connected to The Swedish Worker’s Educational Association (ABF) and two libraries are connected to IOGT, the largest branch of the temperance movement. The source material consists of the study circle libraries annual reports for the years 1941–1947. A quantitative method is used to process the mainly statistical material and a qualitative method is used to analyse the result. The theoretical point of departure are the educational ideas of the popular education movement, which stated that culture should be available to all, literature supplied by the libraries should be of good quality by distinguished authors and the subject matters preferred were books that related to the working class, its history and local conditions.

    Together the three libraries provided library service throughout the parish of Nyhem for both adults and children. Fiction was the most popular genre in total. The most popular authors were the local author Per Nilsson-Tannér who wrote fiction, non-fiction and books for children mainly about issues related to the county of Jämtland, Swedish author Sigge Stark writer of love stories and Jack London American author recommended by leading ideologists in the popular education movement. The results of this study are in accordance with previous research regarding Jack London, fiction as the most popular genre and that books related to local history and conditions were preferred.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum Studies is to analyse how Swedish cultural history museums work to include LGBTQ-heritage (LGBT is the acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) in their collections. This work is articulated around three research questions. These interrogate museum practice about collecting and collection management, what it looks like in the already gathered collections as well as the implications such work implies on a broader level. The theoretical framework throughout the paper is gender and LGBT studies as well as queer theory. The analytical tools that have been used are bias-theory (Carruthers 1987), stereotyping (Pickering 2003) and classification theory (Bowker & Leigh Star 2000). Seven interviews form the main empirical material that is analysed in order to grasp museums collecting practice and collection management.

    Today’s museums practice is influenced by the new trends in democratic representation and seeks therefore to include new narratives that include the LGBTQ community. Museums are either collecting new material with connection to the LGBTQ community or look inwards in order to reinterpret older collections and maybe find a link to it. Both strategies rouse questions that are discussed in this paper. How to classify and document that material as well as selection processes and the traditional museums relation to the alternative collecting practice as the grassroots organizations stand for are discussed in the thesis.

    Fornföreningen Fibula on the Aland Islands contacts the author because its members want to create a museum.The purpose of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies is to shed light on what a museum really is. The research question I have answered is “what is a museum and is this what Fibula really wants in their reconstructed Viking village?”. Based on interview material, ethnographic field studies, relevant research in the subject and documents from Fibula, I have answered the research question. My theory is grounded and the methods are qualitative.The result of the analysis is that a museum is a non-profit, permanent institution mediating knowledge. It is a heritage value protector and a museum is obligated to take care of and conserve its museum objects and to safeguard the heritage professionally. A museum has to respect and understand the heritage it manages. Research anddocumentation of the museum collections is the key to maintain professionalism. A museum is always active and it can be a participating museum where visitors are included in the museums democratic processes. Fibula is a heritage entrepreneur and the association will find it difficult to manage a museum professionally due to that reason. Fibulas members have an existing sense of place for the Viking village in Kvarnbo and its surroundings. To bring attention to this fact in the future a museum, a visitor center, a walking trail or a development of the Viking village into a living history museum or an (archaeological) open air museum could be relevant. At the moment it seems doubtful however that Fibula and its members got the time, the commitment, the resources and the knowledge it takes to run a museum. Perhaps a museum can be created in the future if respect and understanding of heritage value will come to pass. Entrepreneurship and the sense of place alone don’t lead all the way to a museum.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this masters thesis, based on discourse analysis and organization theory, is to study how individuals in different Swedish cultural organizations- and agencys are working with disaster preparedness.

    The purpose of this is to examine whether organizational structures affect different persons work, cooperation and practical application concerning disaster preparedness in collaboration with both external and internal organizations.

    The research shows that disaster preparedness are affected by priority issues as well as financial resources causing consequences for future work concerning this kind of issues.

    Another problem which is also examined and discussed in this thesis are the problematic approach to personal initiative which today is the leading operation for the organizations to deal with disaster preparedness instead of creating professional titles for the persons handles these complex issues.

    Abstract [en]

    Digital preservation is a relatively new subject to Swedish archives. Alhough computers have been used for a long time, preservation has been made on paper and stored on shelves. These days a lot of cities in Sweden have investigated how to best secure the digital information for the future through electronic archiving, e-archives. One option is to hand in the information as soon as possible, but to let the producer keep the information ownership yet some time. The idea is to let the producers of the information answer questions and hand out material, since they are more competent on their field. This thesis analyzes how five different cities have organized the submission of information. I have used archiving models and interviews. For comparison the cities creating their e-archives have been set against Stockholm. There archive has been up and running for some time. The conclusion is that the solution using a transfer archive could be useful, if the material has got a lot of secrecy and one needs specific knowledge to handle the questions.

    The theoretical framework has been the life cycle model versus the records continuum model. Swedish city archives embrace the continuum approach early in the creation of the information, but the archivists believe in the life cycle model where all long term preservation comes to the point where no further changes can be done, to protect the authenticity of the information.
