Arkivet- en resurs för skolan?: En arkivpedagogisk studie utifrån arkivens samarbete med skolan.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

Genomgår basker en identitetsförändring?: En antropologisk studie om nationalism och unga baskers identitetsskapande i spanska Baskien2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Connected on a heart level: An anthropological discussion about interracial relationships in post-apartheid South Africa2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Throughout history South Africa has been dominated by a white race group and during the era of apartheid racial segregation was encouraged as well as an idea of racial order was established through institutionalised racism. Marriage across racial borders was prohibited according to the Mixed Marriages Act. The end of apartheid and the transition to democracy in 1994 meant a radical political change within the country, but the issue of race became a question of social and economic inequality. In this essay I study the approaches and experiences of interracial couples in the post-apartheid society, and interracial couples impact on the South African society. I am particularly interested in the South Africans idea of social order today and whereas racial thinking is still present in the postapartheid society. I use qualitative content analysis to discuss ideas of order in relation to race and my material consist in audio files from interviews with interracial couples, as well as literature, books and articles. In my analysis I discuss cultural and social norms, fear of race pollution, prejudice and racial stereotypes as well as thoughts about unity and humanness. Racial thinking is still present in the South African society although the development of relationships across racial borders has increased since the end of apartheid. The interracial couples in my study notice a certain uncomfortableness among the people in their surroundings, some more than others, because people are still getting used to the thought of interracial couples. Although racist beliefs and power relations are still implied by the surroundings the couples appear to feel increasingly at home in South Africa, even though they live in an in-between world, in a New South Africa.

"Åldern är ju bara en siffra": En antropologisk litteraturstudie om medicinska åldersbedömningar på ensamkommande flyktingbarn2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to examine the justifications of the swedish government to perform medical age assessments on unaccompanied refugee children seeking asylum in Sweden. These governmental justifications were analyzed through Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary power as well as through anthropological research on classification of age. The empirical material consisted of a selection of websites from different authorities that process medical age assessments. These were then studied through critical discourse analysis. The essay showed that these justifications can be understood as an expression of disciplinary power, where medical age assessments discipline individuals to docile bodies. Furthermore, the analysis also showed that the governmental justifications were partly founded upon western concepts of how a child is supposed to be and what a child is entitled to.

Logos and Process Thought: A Survey on the Process Studies Journal 1973-20142018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The discussion has explored how process thought might clarify a relation between Logos and a teleological organized form of panentheism. Logos could be described as participating in an event with a primordial beginning leading to creation, incarnation and a conjoining movement between God and the world. Applying Joseph Bracken's concept of society, this movement can be described as a field (the holy Trinity) working in fields. By referring to John's prologue and articles where logos is mentioned, this essay has also explored how logos might be perceived as a person. The survey primarily consists of articles mentioning logos published in Process Studies. Moreover, Catherine Keller’s concept of a poietic language has been adopted and developed referring to Isa 7:15. Finally, drawing an analogy between the Old and the New Testament, this essay can be seen as a critical comment on Alfred North Whitehead's concept of Logos in Religion in the Making. The discussion has frequently drawn on concepts in John’s prologue and concepts elaborated by Whitehead, Bracken, Keller, John B. Cobb and Tokiyuki Nobuhara.

    Abstract [en]

Initiatives in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) are getting more pronounced than we as a society are used to, and spurs confusion over the perceived dichotomy between corporate ethicising and profitability. H&M is a company engaging in these initiatives, and their manifest of CSR will be analysed for discourse content. Themes such as social institutions, contrasted groups, individuality and collectivism and agency emerge within the pages of the H&M group’s sustainability report.

Gamla Uppsala som kulturarv: en etnologisk studie2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay aims to study Old Uppsala as cultural heritage, especially Viking- and vendel age, how history is presented and pictured.Material objects are concrete traces from history, remains. The picture analysis is an important part of this analysis, as well as myths and tales, but also how the location has been interpreted through time, especially the last two centuries.By a selection of souvenirs and pictures, I wish to study what objects are chosen to be souvenirs or copies, how the location and the viking is presented, but also how the period is presented to visitors. What activities are created round Old Uppsala and what groups are attracted to the location? As conclusion children are a target group for the museum but all ages are interested in the location and the history. Archeology is the main attraction to visitors, and during recent years new excavations have been made and new knowledge is being presented about this ancient location. A popular vision of the viking with horns on the helmet inspired by the images from 19th century lives on in souvenirs, film and popular culture. At the same time images and replicas true to the findings are spread widely and made popular by museum and scientists, but also by the associations dedicated to vendel- and viking age. These associations contribute to the activities at the location in many ways. There also seems to be an exchange between history, cultural heritage, myths, litterature, film and popular culture. In order to see how history is portrayed and what attracts the public in our time, I have studied the location by observation, interviews, pictures, objects, souvenirs, myths and marketing material.

Lost in Space: Sökandet efter mening hos människan i Titan A.E.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the depiction of meaningfulness and meaning-making, as seen in human characters in the 2000 animated science fiction film Titan A.E. (directed by Don Bluth). The analysis aims to show how Titan A.E. portrays a collective humanity in their search for a meaningful existence, given the outer space setting of its story. Evil is also brought up, in the context of how it creates meaning within the main narrative of the story. The emotions expressed by the story's characters are treated as if they were real. Meaningfulness and meaning-making get exemplified in both dialogue and visual components seen in the film. In addition to this, some reflection is made on the promotional trailers of Titan A.E. and how their displayed contents differ from the finished product. In parallel to the main analysis, there is a wider discussion made about the relationship between films and their real-world process of production, especially regarding whether theological reflection and the film industry can intersect or not.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Several feminist interpreters have noted that Emmanuel Levinas uses the word feminine in a way that might create confusion. In a first reading, it seems that he denotes women. He describes them as silent, mysterious and without being part of the ethical relation. But in a deeper study, the use of the feminine appears more as a description of a phenomenon of feelings or possibly a metaphor.

The purpose of this essay is to study Emmanuel Levinas’ concept of the feminine. This study also has a clear feminist perspective. As a main critic, I have chosen the feminist-Jewish philosopher Claire Elise Katz. Her main argument is that the interpretation and understanding of Levinas’ philosophy must be done in the light of the Jewish tradition. She also interprets Levinas' the feminine in a dualistic way, like real women and as metaphors. In my study, I criticize her argument that the Jewish inheritance would be decisive. I argue that the feminine as absolute alterality is possible for all religions in phenomenological sense, not only for the Jewish tradition.

Self-care and injury prevention in the Swedish welfare society: An anthropological study on how physical activity and cardio exercise are used to self-care both physically and mentally2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The broader aim of this essay is twofold: Firstly, I study what motivate people to engage in physical activities, particularly walking or running. Secondly, I contextualize the experiences and understanding in relation to governmentality and technology. I pay particular attention to perceived benefits of physical activities and cardio exercises, both physical and mental benefits, which include feelings, motivations and experiences.

The essay focuses on the perceived benefits of physical activities, which is deeply tied to health and self-governing. Therefore, this essay examines how physical activities is viewed as good for people’s health, how it is motivated by pain and illness, monitored by self-govern and technology, and desired for its ability to maintain capability and freedom.

In order to analyze perceived benefits of physical activities, this study draws from several theoretical orientations of governmentality, concept of illness, embodiment, place, mobility and freedom. I have used medical anthropology, public health studies as well as historical studies of sport and exercises to contextualize physical activities. As method I have drawn mostly from interviews with the participants in the study and some observations of the environment. Besides that, I have used my own senses to experiences walking in different areas. Furthermore, I have analyzed written material from the public health agency and the ministry of health and social affairs in Sweden, health organizations and newspapers.

MAGI SOM KREATIV OORDNING: En undersökning om skapandeprocessen av nya ritualer2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the creative aspects of creating new rituals and what it tells us about humans as cultural beings. It focuses on individual stories from participants who through interviews and questionnaires have told their experiences of creating or re-shaping rituals for individual purposes. Emphasis is on the practical shaping of the ritual and the participants thoughts on it.The results points to the creating of new rituals as experimenting and as a creative expression. With theories and prior research in ritual psychology, phenomenology and ritual criticism the study shows how individual stories of creation show worldviews and phenomenon through ritualization.

Hidden Stories of Burchardt Precht’s Altarpiece in Gustaf Vasa Church, Stockholm: Revealed through exploring the materials2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Artworks’ materials and constructions can be sources for remembrance and envisaging intangible aspects hidden from the present. Studies oriented on materials can be another way to retrieve insights that otherwise would have been inaccessible areas of inquiry from the past. There are rarely any written sources or other information captured in the past detailing for us an artworks’ materials and construction that can mediate how it was originally created, which materials were used and why. In such a context artworks’ material can be seen as an archive for exploration of non-written information, which can create an understanding of cultural relation, intended messages and original visual impression.

The thesis aims to explore what aspects it is possible to retrieve through using an altarpiece material and construction as a primary source. Through an art-technological investigation of the early 18th century altarpiece in Gustaf Vasa Church in Stockholm, findings are interpreted and connected to relations and meanings with aid of the perspectives from deconstruction theory. The result shows that interpretation of the physical materials as a source provides access to new contexts beyond the material itself. These insights are discussed in a context that seeks to position the relevance of the outcome in a broader context of the cultural heritage discourse on sacred art in Swedish churches today.

Det vi slåss för: Om svenska yrkessoldater och viljan att försvara ett land2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Försvarsmaktens våldsmonopol anses skapa stabilitet i samhället.

Stratified Polynesia: A GIS-based study of prehistoric settlements in Samoa and Rapa Nui2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The overall objective of this study is, to understand how the prehistoric individual experienced her “being in the world”. This is done by examining the spatial relationships of prehistoric remains in order to understand hierarchies. The foundation of the thesis is constructed by using data from the prehistoric settlement of Letolo in Samoa (Independent State of Samoa) in West-Polynesia and Hanga Ho´onu on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in East-Polynesia. These data are stored and analysed in a Geographical Information System (GIS). In the Samoan case the intention is to make previously unpublished surveys available. An aim is to develop a method to interpret social information from the spatial relations of built structures. It is questioned if it is possible to interpret the degree of hierarchy in a prehistoric society only from the spatial relations of features. It is concluded that such an inquiry needs to be paired with preunderstanding and analogies, such as ethnohistorical data, since it otherwise is problematic to ascribe meaning to different built structures. The thesis uses ethnohistory for preunderstanding and analogy. The thesis further examines the worldviews and structures that are shown in the repeated practice of groups in the two settlements.

Kyrkbåtarnas saga: Aktuella perspektiv på sociala aspekter av Siljans kyrkbåtsfärder fram till sekelskiftet 19002018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the preindustrial society in Sweden the church was a natural gathering point on Sundays and holidays. In areas with bigger lakes the water was used as a way to transport a large number of people to the church services. These transports were made with long boats called church boats (kyrkbåt(ar) in Swedish). This essay studies the social aspects of the church boat journeys that took place on the lake Siljan, in the province of Dalarna, until the turn of the twentieth century. The material consists of archive files that was assembled in the 1930’s by Uppsala Landsmålsarkiv (nowadays Dialekt- och folkminnesarkivet) and Nordiska museet in Stockholm. A methodological standpoint in the essay is to review the material in relation to aspects of performance studies. In that way the material is interpreted as narratives which are performed by the people who has created them, as actors, to me (and everybody else who takes part of them) as an audience. This requires a contextualization of the material and therefore some observations of its background and origin are made in the essay. In relation to this methodological aspect the church boat journeys are studied as rituals based on attributes as highlighted by scholars of ritual studies. The ritual perspective has been used as a tool to illustrate how the social aspects of the church boat journeys was expressed. The study shows that the church boat journeys was of importance for the social interaction for those involved. The essay also fulfill a secondarily purpose, to emphasize a material and a field of studies that has not been studied for a long time. The tradition has therefore not been viewed upon with methodological and theoretical perspectives relevant in todays Swedish ethnology. Further on the essay encourages further studies on the church boat tradition in the preindustrial society as well as the revitalized church boat tradition in the Siljan area today, where modern built church boats are used for competition.

Ra(ce)ising Questions About School: Analyzing social structures in a Swedish High School2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based in a Swedish high school and scrutinizes social interaction among students. The material was gathered in semi-structured interviews and observations made outside of classrooms, but inside the school grounds. The study strives to analyze power dynamics that the students adhere to in their social relationships at the school. It uses intersectionality as an analytical tool to understand the gendered and racialized ways in which students understand themselves in the social complex as social beings within a system. Based on three months of ethnographic fieldwork conducted at this Stockholm-region high school during the spring of 2016, this essay also seeks to address the narrow ways in which Swedishness and non-Swedishness are constructed as dichotomous, as well as the power relations attached to acknowledgement of national belonging. Furthermore, the study analyzes ways in which students reinforce and communicate group belonging through attire, body language and speech. The thesis also considers how power dynamics stipulated by homosociality become an important factor in determining agency.

    Abstract [en]

The forest fire of Västmanland in 2014 had a significant cultural impact on local communities. Research is warranted to better understand the impact and process of recovery after natural disasters, as well as to discover how underlying political and cultural structures affect rescue and recovery. Thus far, any research in this area has been carried out by government-funded studies and evaluations of crisis management. This study complements that existing body of research by exploring this topic through local experiences and memories of the fire and emergency operations. The analysis builds on four theoretical perspectives: Foucault’s theory of power; phenomenology; memory theory, and theories of identity. Through these, the study examines how locals relate to the burnt landscape as well as explores how political tensions relating to Swedish countryside have gained new relevance as a result of the fire. These research results indicate that memories of the fire are characterized by chaotic rescue operations and crisis management, and that their failure generally is interpreted as a result of current political and cultural discourses defined by urban norms that for decades have disfavored infrastructure and social security in rural parts of Sweden. The research shows that favorable conditions for rural life in general are crucial for successful crisis management. From a societal perspective, the battle for resources between urban and rural areas, combined with inequality between city and countryside, is very problematic. Many crises occur in rural areas, which require security and infrastructure nationwide. The study therefore stresses the importance of active use of local knowledge in governing on local and regional as well as national levels. Diversity is not only a matter of ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, but also includes perspectives from all generations living all over the country.

Den historiske Johannes döparen2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay four paintings illustrating the Swedish midsummer celebration among common people are examined. The selected paintings are Midsommardans på Säfstaholm (1825) by Johan Gustaf Sandberg, Midsommardans i Rättvik (1855) by Kilian Zoll, Midsommarleken på Norsbron i Floda (1858) by Joseph Wilhelm Wallander and Midsommardans (1897) by Anders Zorn. The paintings and their motifs are examined individually, but also in a comparative manner through an extensive and detailed analysis. The composition of the paintings and how the motifs are represented are central themes in the examination but also how the paintings can be perceived in a nationalistic point of view, since nationalism was one of the current themes in Sweden during the 19th Century.

Among other things, the results connected to the composition of the paintings show that a change over time seem to be discernible, for example when it comes to movement and a sense of a physical closeness to the motifs and the paintings themselves.

Discernable nationalistic expressions found in the paintings are that the people and their folk costumes became a symbol for Sweden and what’s perceived as typical Swedish. Also the chosen motifs by the painters turned out to be of nationalistic importance.

Prophesying the Big Man: The Transatlantic Slave Trade as a Long-Run Determinant of Ethno-Regional Favouritism2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Transatlantic slave trade exists as a radical break in Africa’s history, having functioned to fundamentally alter many of the continent’s polities, societies and economies. One consequence, well documented within historical scholarship, was the effect of the slave trade on the fragmentation and formation of ethnic identities. Ethnic fragmentation has consistently been shown to affect outcomes in resource distribution, and it is therefore possible that the Transatlantic slave trade may serve as a long-run determinant of ethno-regional favouritism. This paper empirically tests this possibility, finding a positive linear relationship between historic levels of slave extraction and the degree of ethno-regional favouritism exercised by African political leaders when allocating foreign official assistance. In doing so, this paper contributes to a comparatively new body of scholarship that seeks to determine the long-run effects of the continent’s various slave trades.

Att läsa på, mellan och bortom raderna: - Litteracitet och påverkansfaktorer för nyanlända2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sophie Calle i den andres spår: Tre tidiga verk2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Exit game? Any unsaved progress will be lost: En praktikteoretisk analys av relationen mellan svenska spelföretag och ABM-institutioner2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the relationship between Swedish video game companies and the institutions for Archive, Libraries and Museums (ALM). The aim is to further the discussion regarding preservation of digital games. The thesis is based on semi-structured interviews with four video game companies and three institutions; an archive, a library and a museum. The theoretical foundation resides within practice theory, with the assumption that a practice is a combination of what people do and what they say. By analyzing what video game companies say they do the authors ascertain which methods of preservation is currently. The analysis is a cross-examination of the seven interviews with the result indicating that while video game companies are interested in the preservation of digital games they do not participate actively in the discussion on the best method of doing so. Communica- tion between video game companies and ALM institutions has room for improvement, as it is virtually non- existent. Furthermore, the findings indicate different motivations for preserving games and it is unclear which perspective the preservation should have; a technical perspective, cultural perspective or for the company’s bene- fit. In conclusion the current situation is that ALM institutions preserve games with a cultural and/or a technical perspective while game companies preserve their games for the company’s benefit.

Informationsbeteende i spelskapande: En fallstudie av Paradox Interactive2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on Paradox Interactive's information seeking as a process in the construction of historical computer games. The study is collecting data through a series of interviews with two professional groups: Content designers and 3D graphics. The study focuses on the role of information gathering as a internal process in the creation of the game but also on how the two professions, which have been involved in the study's interviews, gather information relevant to their specific tasks. The study also touches on whether it exists a connection between how Content designers and 3D graphics conduct their searches for information and the ABM sector (that is archives, libraries and museums) as sources/distributors of information.

The study has resulted in knowledge regarding the professional groups' information behaviour, what factors that affect the process of gathering information. The study has also resulted in an awareness regarding what kind of information sources that are attractive. Furthermore, the interviews conducted have produced information on how archives, libraries and museums function as information sources for the selected professional groups. The information gathered through the interviews shows that archives, libraries and museums are not used as information sources by the professional groups. Reasons as to why this is the case are a lack of awareness as well as the professional groups' various needs, such as right content and easy accessibility.

Games which are utilising or relate to popular history are a clear aspect of modern days popular culture. There exists an abundance of games which relate to history whether they are historical strategy-focused computer games or more action-packed videogames constructed around historical events and contexts. There exists an equally abundance of studies which focuses on games in certain aspects; one such area of research is how history is utilised in games. This study, as noted above, doesn't focus on the games themselves or how they utilise history but rather on the specific question of how the developers gather the information about the past, what sources that exists, and how archives, libraries and museums can better accommodate game creators as a specific group of information gatherers and users.

"Ett eget rum" på internet: En studie om separatistiska Facebookgrupper för kvinnor och icke-binära.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To be a football supporter can today mean very different things depending om who you ask. It can mean anything from being a dedicated follower of a football team or maybe a troublemaker who enjoys fighting. It can archive great things and cause tremendous problems. This thesis will try to clear up what it means to be a supporter and how one become one. What being on an arena or on a supporter bus does to the individual in terms of acting and how the individual goes into a roll of being a supporter.  I also bring up how media affect the supporter culture and how it, through its way of reporting about matches, create an exclusion of women in supporter culture. I have conducted an observation where I followed along on a supporter bus on its way to an away game. With this I have also done 5 interviews with supporters from the same team as the observation. With this empirical data that I have collected, I have used Erving Goffmans theory on frontstage and backstage in terms of getting an understanding on how the individual goes into a roll. The result shows how the scenery around the football game have an impact on how the individuals transform into the role of the supporter. How media affects this role and how it, though its way of reporting about football matches and supporters, create an exclusion of women.

    Abstract [en]

This work has two purposes. The first purpose is to investigate how politicians, in the Planning- and Buildingcommitee, affect the aesthetics of buildings in Uppsala city center. The second purpose is to document the thoughts of politicians and officials about how politicians acted during the process.

The overall method of work is a case study based on qualitative interviews. The interviewees are members of the current Planning and Buildingcommitee and officals who are or have been employed by the City Planning Administration. The case is; the impact of the Planning and Building Board on the aesthetics of buildings in Uppsala city center.

The result shows that politicians have had an influence on the facades and volumes of buildings, and a number of examples of buildings that have been affected are provided. Due to the nature of the influence and the method's risk of subjectivity, it has not been possible to identify the impact in detail.
