    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

In this master´s thesis I primarily investigate librarians´ and teachers´ conceptions of collaboration between libraries and schools and their conceptions of childrens´reading. Secondary I investigate the contents of laws concerning libraries and schools and also the school curriculums concerning the subject field of the Swedish language. My theoretical point of departure is that of social constructionism. I use two models in my analysis. One is a model of collaboration created by Patricia Montiel-Overall, called TLC (Teacher Librarian Collaboration), which grades collaboration from the lowest level (A) to the highest (D). The other model is created by Staffan Thorsson and is a model for understanding different kinds of reading strategies. I chose to study one public library and one elementary school. At the public library I interviewed the manager, the children´s librarian and the literature pedagogue. At the elementary school I interviewed the headmaster, two teachers who are teaching the Swedish language (one junior-level teacher and one senior-level teacher) and the school librarian. I used a hermeneutical method when I analyzed both my interviews and the laws and curriculums mentioned above.

In my analysis I discovered all levels of collaboration, except for the highest one (D). Everyone, except for the school librarian, seemed more or less content with the lower degrees of collaboration. The teachers´ perceptions of the librarians were quite traditional. Even though all of the librarians had previous teaching experience and education they were not seen as pedagogues by the teachers. Especially in the case of the school librarian this became a problem, because it seemed to inhibit a development of the collaboration between them. In the laws and curriculums that I looked into collaboration between schools and libraries were never mentioned. The reading promotion seemed to be based on two strategies: pragmatical and emancipatorical. The pragmatical strategy led to looking at children as “becomings”, the emancipatorical one led to looking at children as “beings”.

Digitalisering av biblioteksmaterial: En kvalitativ undersökning av åtta biblioteksanställdas attitydertill digitalisering2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the views on digitization of eight respondents, all working at different libraryinstitutions in Sweden, and how their views are reflected in their library's digitization strategies. The poll wasconducted on the basis of Ingrid Mason's theory of information standards, their structure and sociopoliticalnature. The informantion standards are divided into three aspects, curatorial, semantic and technical, and theyaffect selection of, intellectual and physical access to the digitized material, which in the end is what constitutes the digital cultural heritage. The background to the study is that the Swedish library institutions in the current situation lacks a nationalstandard or a common strategy for the digitization of cultural heritage, while it is still implemented digitizationprojects at many library institutions. The method used is qualitative, structured interviews with open-ended questions. The study shows that one of the main motives behind the libraries' digitization projects is to make librarymaterials available in a new way, creating greater opportunities for the users to take advantage of the material. The library users are the ones who mainly control what is digitized, although aspects of preservation ismentioned. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents believe that digitization offers improved capabilities tosearch and learn more about the collections, but the actual work of image capture, the addition of metadata, presentation to users and long-term preservation is very complex.Views on what it is to be digitized, how the material should be selected and provided with metadata and howit should be presented to users is what creates the standards that libraries use when they digitize their materials, and digitization of library materials creates new conditions for new users to access and use library material. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of the Christening Gift today, what gifts are appropriate and if the christening gift mirrors social relationships as well as how individuals perceive and how they reflect on the Christening Gift.

Through literature, participant observation and interviews, the survey of today's Christening Gift could be identified. The survey shows that a christening gift can be anything, a subject or something abstract that a sponsor has to offer. The value is not only economical but can also be the relationships that a christening gift give rise to. The Christening Gift can also select social relation, who is highest in rank, such as family. Gifts can serve to establish friendships and alliances to ensure future good relations. It is about gifts in change influenced by newer trends.

Svenska kyrkans funktion i den palliativa vården: - ett religionssociologiskt perspektiv2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Through the lenses of religion’s role in society, the purpose of this thesis is to examine, the role of the Church of Sweden in providing support to people at the end of life. Questions asked are:  "What types of spiritual support is offered by the Church of Sweden during terminal care provided in patients' homes and how is this support expressed in church orders, assembly instructions, plans of operations and congregation letters?" and " How can the work of the Church of Sweden be understood, based on theories of religion's role in society? The method used is a content analysis of the Church Order, assembly instructions, plans of operations and congregation letters in 17 different congregations within the diocese of Lund. I then engage in a discussion with theories on differentiation and the privatization of religion as a means to interpret my results. My conclusion is that the investigated parishes in the diocese of Lund do not have any specific goals or targets documented for spiritual support to people who are at life’s end cared in their homes. This can be understood based on theories of differentiation. The privatization of religion may explain the phenomenon that people's religious needs are not linked to the collective institutional religion of the Church of Sweden.  This is despite of the fact that a large proportion of the Swedish population belongs to the Church of Sweden. The de-privatization of religion, at a societal level can explain the reason why these concerns are attracting an increased interest from the healthcare services as people's need of spiritual support are discussed. The question of who should meet the patients' needs for spiritual support is unclear.

Tv-spel som kultur?: En kvantitativ studie över tv-spelens kulturella plats på folkbiblioteket.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the cultural place and status of video and computer games in the Swedish public library. Using works on popular culture and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study employs quantitative methods, as well as textual analysis, to analyze the results of an online questionnaire with 19 questions focusing on selection criteria, shelf placement, perceived competence, as well as reasoning for having or not having these games in the library. 286 out of the 440 libraries contacted is participating in the study, and the libraries consist exclusively of public libraries in Sweden that are found in the database of the Royal Library.

The results of this study show that a larger number of libraries than previously indicated have started to provide electronic games to their patrons. At the same time, patterns in the data and comments suggests that these games in many cases still do not enjoy the same level of cultural recognition as other media. Indicative of this is the way most libraries seem to focus on the medium being exclusively for their young patrons, with seem-ingly very little in the way of investment for adults. Also relevant is selection process being highly influenced by the type and amount of violence in the games, regardless of the level of competence and knowledge about games among library staff. These findings relate to and expand upon previous studies regarding electronic games, cul-ture and the public library. This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Negotiating Identity in the Kingdom: A Conversation with Five Young Saudi Arabian Women about Identity Development and Expression2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” Simone de Beauvoir once famously said presenting the hypothesis that the idea of a woman, the female identity, is constructed as a reflection of its context. The purpose of this paper is to discover one aspect of this construction by exploring the identity development and expression of five young women, in the context of Saudi Arabia, to theorize about how they construct their ego identity and sense of self in the context in which they exist.

Though in-depth conversations it is established how the women view themselves and their expression. This material is then reflected upon through the prism of defining identity and the identity status’ as explored by Eric Erikson and James Marcia as to create a further understanding of the women’s creation of self.

The conclusion is that young women in Saudi Arabia construct their identity through negotiation. Faced with blurred lines of personal, religious and national identity, negotiation is unavoidable in the complex structure in which the women’s expression and development takes place.

Siffror istället för bokstäver: Övergången från SAB till DDK i Sigtuna kommuns folkbibliotek2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the transition from SAB to DDC in the public libraries of Sigtuna.More specifically, it aims at investigating why the decision was made to adopt the DDC and how the system has been implemented. Particular attention is drawn to the difficulties and problems that have arisen while organising the libraries open shelves with DDC and to the ways in which the difficulties have been handled. These questions are examined through a pragmatic perspective on Knowledge Organization that focuses on the contexts and domains in which the classification system is used. The empirical material is drawn from qualitative interviews with the former director of Sigtuna public libraries and with the in-charge of the catalogue department.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Honor-related violence has no boundaries. It does not only occur in a particular country or is associated with one specific ethnicity, culture or religion. Honor-related violence exists around the world, even in Sweden. The murder of Fadime Sahindal received international attention and people were in shock, especially the Swedish government which for a long time had tried to deny that such violence existed in our long-standing country of equality. Honor-related violence is a category of violence which in most cases affects young women who refuse to assimilate to their families’ or relatives’ norms and rules. The research objectives are to compare honor-related violence in Sweden and Turkey as well as investigating the reasons for the phenomenon. The aim also includes investigating the judiciary system in both countries regarding honor-related violence and looks at how different organizations work to counter more women from becoming victims of honor-related violence. Feminist theory is a tool which has been used consistently in the investigation and the analyzed information was taken from biographies and interviews which were conducted in Sweden and Turkey. The governments of Sweden and Turkey must clearly take more responsibility for the honor-related violence problem rather than leaving the problem in the hands of charitable organizations. In Turkey, there are far too few women organizations for women exposed to honor-related violence while in Sweden, shelters are overflowing and women are denied accommodation because of too few places. Even the police and authorities have received criticism for their inadequate work towards dealing with honor-related violence. The aim should be for creating a society where there is no need for women shelters; however, with the current situation, it seems that even more are needed. There is certainly something wrong occurring both in Sweden and Turkey.

Toppbetyg i svenska: – En studie av kopplingen mellan textkvalitet och högsta betyg i svenska över tid2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"Wesh ! T'es ouf mon reuf !": En undersökning om hur Paris förortsungdomar använder verlan2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Denna uppsats undersöker hur Paris förortsungdomar använder språket

verlan.

Den blekingska dialekten eller dialekter i Blekinge?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I denna uppsats undersöks målen i Blekinge.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Pottery in Museums: How, Why and What do we exhibit?2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of pottery in the museum world. Throughout the study, questions along the lines of how, why and what we exhibit are brought up and answered. The study is done through observations and interviews with seven different museums, four of which are located in Sweden and three in Italy. The author has also used museological literature and theories in order to strengthen the essay and show that the issues brought up in the observations are known since before in the field, but still exist in the museums today. The exhibiting of pottery comes with several issues, such as overcrowding of displays, requirements of pre-knowledge from the visitors, aesthetical problems with broken, coarse or fine pottery and epistemological prob-lems. Epistemology is a subject that seems to be partly ignored in the observed museums, despite it being general knowledge that fewer visitors will read the text the longer it is. Other epistemological problems that are brought up are the issues of text placement, vocabulary and actual mediated information. These problems are brought up throughout the essay and explained, with a smaller section that discusses possible improvements to them, which have been brought up by researchers in the field. In interviews with curators of the museums, thoughts about what the visitors see and understand compared to what the museums want them the see are presented. Also their views on the possibilities of interaction with pottery as a mediator and whether they focus primarily on aesthetics or learning in the exhibitions are shown. This essay is not meant to be a decider between what is right or wrong concerning the exhibiting of pottery, but could be used as a stepping-stone towards such studies. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

"Mer bio än bibliotek": Klassifikation och medieuppställning i det senmoderna samhället2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study examines the new media presentation system in Alby public library. The aim is to explore if the contemporary Zeitgeist, wich according to the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, could be described as liquid modernity, has affected how the system was formed. The purpose is to find out how that would affect users and staff of public libaries of the contemporary. Interviews were conducted with the library staff, and plans and documents concerning the media presentation system was examined.

The empirical part of this thesis starts with a study of the process that resulted in the new presentation system while the second part examines the system as such. I discovered that both the media presentation system, and the process which preceded it, contained aspects that could be traced to liquid modernity. However, I also found lingering signs of solid modernity, wich is the term Bauman uses to denote the modern era. The media presentation system could thus be described as a combination of solid and liquid modernity. I argued that the new media arrangment is a compromise with several disadvantages for both users and the library staff.

The interplay between solid and liquid modernity in the contemporary public library results in a divergent situation for users and staff. On the one hand, it gives more freedom to use the library according to their own ideas. However, old structures, such as classification systems, sets limits for this development.

Satskonnektion: – en komparativ studie av tillämpningen av satskonnektiver i de nationella proven i svenska och svenska som andraspråk på gymnasiet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The visual aspects of Riot Grrrl 1989-19952015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis considers the visual aspects of the Riot grrrl movement in the United States in the early 1990s, with focus on DIY media.

Riot grrrl, a subculture of activism, music, writing and visual art, was formed by and around a group of friends in Olympia, WA and in Washington D.C. simultaneously around 1990. The movement initiated from a unified reaction against several factors. The self labeled riot grrrls reacted against the extent to which men/boys by far outnumbered women/girls within the punk scene that they were part of. They also reacted to general machismo attitudes in society in general as well as several contemporary high profile court cases in America concerning feminist issues. They arranged political awakening meetings, wrote, played and performed music, produced zines, flyers and posters, all according to the traditionally punk DIY (do it yourself) principle. These young women took charge of and controlled all of their own production and ways of expression. The visual culture of this movement is hard to define due to the fleeting nature of its purpose, namely a conscious lack of copyright and with the insistance for percievers to interpret and adapt images and texts freely to make them their own.

This research has been strictly limited to the first few years of Riot grrrl and the production of a set group of individuals. With the recently initiated Riot Grrrl Collection at Fales Library & Special Collections at New York University as primary source, 31 image examples have been analysed to establish technique, aethetics and visual references. Together they offer ways to understand this visual culture. This project attempts to approach the imagery alone as carrier of significant meaning for a movement that worked towards social and cultural change.

Hur bemöts barn i det virtuella biblioteksrummet?: En socialsemiotisk bildanalys av fyra folkbibliotekswebbsidor.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master's thesis is to examine how the public library communicates with young users through the library web sites. Four Swedish public library web pages for children are analysed. In the analysis the web pages are treated as a combination of semiotic resources that, communicating as a whole, hold a meaning potential. In order to identify the underlying meaning of the whole I have applied the tools of Kress' & van Leeuwen's visual social semiotics to the chosen web pages.

The information value, the framing and the salience of each composition is examined and analysed, as is the size of frame, the perspective and the vertical angle of a selection of images from each web page. The results of the semiotic analysis are then discussed and related to Jochumsen et al:s four space-model and the notion of ”child perspective” and ”empowerment”.

The results show that the child perspective is strongest on the web pages that represent the performative space as dominating and that empowerment is mainly represented as ”doing”, ”participating” and the ”free choice”. The representation of adult presence often contradicts the child perspective that the overall layout communicates. Another finding is that part and whole tend to convey the same message. Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the Nordic model of Extended Collective Licenses (ECL) and how this model can be used in the process of digitalising and publishing archival material such as photos, letters, maps or films. The question that this study aims to deal with is what advantages, and disadvantages, there are for archives and copyright holders when an ECL is being used. To help answering this question the ‘theory of the knowledge commons’ has been applied. The research question has been answered through a text analysis based on legal texts including Swedish law. To get a wider perspective, international literature such as official and law-binding documents from the Nordic countries and the European Union have also been consulted. Policies and contributions to the debate about making cultural heritage available online have also been included to give light to the complexity of the question.

In 2013 the Swedish copyright law was changed to facilitate for certain archives and libraries to sign an agreement with a so called Collective Administration Organization (CAO). There are no examples of ECLs being used by Swedish archives for classical archival materials even if the possibility to draw up this type of agreements has existed since 2005. One of the reasons might be the complexity of the law and that the archival institutions have problems of interpreting it. The institutions often avoid providing access to their materials online or choose material they know is in the public domain already. Finding copyright holders before publishing material online is time-consuming. One of the major advantages of functional ECLs is that they save time and resources – both for the archival institutions and the copyright holders. The ECLs provide an opportunity for the archival institutions to share their collections with the public and the copyrights holders get an organized way to communicate their terms and conditions.

"Särskilt inte här i Sverige": en studie av hur genus och religion framställs i läroböcker för gymnasieskolan2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine how gender and religion is described and portrayed in relation to one another in Swedish textbooks. The research questions used in order to reach the aim of the study is what interpretation of gender and feminism is represented in the textbooks and is the gender perspective consistent regarding all religions described in the textbooks, or does it vary depending on which religion that is described?

This study is based on four Swedish textbooks used when teaching religion in Swedish upper secondary school. The books chosen are published after the most recent curriculum for the upper secondary school, published in 2011. The curriculum gave new directions stating that questions of gender in relation to religion should be a part of the education. The material is subject for qualitative content analysis and the extracts are analysed with Judith Butler’s performativity theory and three feminist theories. The feminist theories used are based on three different perspectives – biological determinism, social construc- tivism and postcolonialism.

The result of the study shows a lack of postcolonial feminist perspective, while a biologi- cal approach towards gender is dominating the textbooks. Representation of gender as a social construction occurs, but not as frequently as the biological approach. In addition to this result the study also shows that the gender perspective represented varies depending on which religion being described. The representations regarding Hinduism and Islam are dominated by a biological approach towards gender, while the authors present a broader perspective on Christianity.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis examines the possibilities of correction and change in a classification scheme, with regard to the changes that occur in the world the classification system intends to describe.

Applying a comparative method and classification theory, the classification of the example of the former Yugoslavia (1918-1941, 1945-1991), its republics and successor states, and the languages, formerly known as Serbo-Croatian are examined through a comparison of the main classes and divisions of language, geography, and history, in Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), and Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek [Classification for Swedish Libraries] (SAB). Eight editions of DDC, from 1876 to 2014, are compared to seven editions of SAB, from 1921 to 2013. The editions have been selected in order to show the changes prior to, and following, the First World War, changes after the Second World War, and changes following the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991.

The examination shows that both systems have updated their editions according to the changes in former Yugoslavia over the years. DDC has well constructed facet schedules, especially Table 2 concerning geography, but fails, in some cases, to construct a logic and hierarchical structure for the republics and languages of Yugoslavia, partly due to the fixed classes and divisions that survive from the very first edition of DDC from 1876, but also as a result of the decimal notation, and its limitations, itself.

SAB seeks to construct a hierarchically logic and equal scheme for the languages, areas, and states of the former Yugoslavia. Although the facets for geography and chronology aren't as developed as the ones in DDC, the overall result is that of a logically consistent and hierarchically clear classification, with short notation codes, thanks to the alphabetic mixed notation, which allows more subdivisions than the numerals and the pure notation of DDC.

    Abstract [en]

This Master's thesis explores representations of sexual agency in contemporary, Swedish novels for young adults. Using a representational theory approach the thesis analyzes 24 novels published in 2000 – 2013. Addressing the following research questions: how is sexual agency constructed and regulated relative to gender performativity in Swedish novels for young adults? How are situations of sexual abuse and sexual “grey zones” (situations that border on abuse) represented and being made intelligible in the texts? What are the consequences of representations of sexual agency? In the readings of the novels discourse analysis and theories on cultural representation and power have served as the critical points of entry, as well as the methodological basis for the study. Furthermore, social constructionist gender theory, feminist phenomenology, masculinity studies and feminist theory on sexuality and power are central to the textual analyses offered. The results show that teenage girls in youth novels typically fall in to two categories. The girl protagonists either tend to be represented as having little or no knowledge about their own body, sexuality, or sexual discourse generally, which prevents them from inhabiting sexual agency. Or the teenage girl protagonists tend to, on the contrary, have plenty of sexual knowledge as well as sexual experience, actively claim sexual agency and initiate sexual practices. However, these girls sexual behavior is sanctioned by means of social stigmatization and harassment. Moreover the material shows that compared to the girls teenage boys often are represented as having a desire based and relatively uncomplicated relation to their sexuality and body as well as more sexual knowledge. Nevertheless, as with the girls, the boys sexual agency is also severely circumscribed by norms of masculinity that require boys to prove themselves as heterosexuals and demonstrate a persistent desire to have sex at all times. The fact that representations of sexual abuse and sexual “grey zones” are very frequent in novels for young adults is a striking finding; ways that these representations are often left unproblematized in the novels is discussed as a result of destructive and stereotypical gender constructions.

Dialekter i svenskämnet: En studie av dialekters utrymme i undervisning och läromedel i gymnasieskolan2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Synd från ovan: Teologisk ondska i Final Fantasy VII-metanarrativet2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The object of this study is representations of theological evils in Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix 1997) and Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix 2004-2009), focusing especially on the monstrous antagonists Jenova and Sephiroth. By comparing these media narratives mainly with Gen 2-3 and Rom 5-7, using an intertextual method developed by Lina Sjöberg (2006), I try to determine what sorts of theological evils (if any) that can be discerned in the stories, and specify what theological perspectives on these evils that seem to dominate. In the end, the conclusion is drawn that there is plenty rather traditional theological representations of sin and demonic evil, such as sin being a turning away from God and attempts at transcending human limitations, whereas demonic evil is expressed in antagonists being portrayed as the devil and/or fallen angels. There is also present, however, views on sin similar to those championed by ecofeminist theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether (1983), where metaphysical evil or human mortality is not considered evil and/or as a punishment for original sin, but instead is regarded as a natural part of life.

Tala är silver, därefter guld: En analys av kravprogressionen i muntliga nationella prov i svenska2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    1

    Sammandrag

    Abstract [en]

The Church of Sweden had barely 6.5 million members in 2012. Just over 1% of the members visit a church service regularly every Sunday. The number of visitors in worship services has diminished continuously for a very long time. From 1990 to 2010, the annual number of visitors at the main worship services has decreased by 50% from 9 million to about 4.5 million. The service activities can still be maintained at the current level because the many passive members still pays their membership fee. According to the national documents from the Church of Sweden the Sunday service is the most important mission. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the mission to celebrate divine worship as the official church gives local parishes and how this is perceived by the employees and the elected officials of the local parish. What are the similarities, differences and tensions between the mandate given by the Church of Sweden at the national level and the way performers perceive this? The study was based on three main documents: The Church Order for Church of Sweden (Kyrkoordningen), The theological basic principles for preparations for a new book of Common Prayer (2006), and the Explanations for the Proposal of the Book of Common Prayer. Part 1. Finally I analyzed the documentation (2011-2012) for preparation of the parish structural regulation on Northern Gotland. From these documents I formed 26 claims about the service that was presented to the informants in the attitude survey. The claims were then grouped into eight tentative quality dimensions for a "right celebrated worship", namely practical issues, faith, didactics, emotions, ethics, fellowship, diaconal issues and tradition. The empirical study was made in seven parishes in the North of Gotland. The informants were 34 employees and 40 elected officials. To this survey I added ten semi-structured interviews with the same groups. This study has essentially a religious sociological frame of reference. The main contribution of theories has been given by Grace Davie, Per Pettersson, Ole Riis and Linda Woodhead.  Davie analyzes North European churches which has or has had any ties to the State and where the majority of the population belongs to the Church, but very few members makes use of church services. Davie has described this in terms like "belonging without believing" or “vicarious religion”. Pettersson describes the relationship between the Church and the many members in service theoretical terms. He measures the quality of what the Church of Sweden offers as a service organization and from a theoretical perspective of this service. Riis and Woodhead have mainly contributed to this study through their theories about religion and emotions.

The result of the study was that the elected officials were slightly more satisfied with the service as it is performed today compared with the employees. Overall, it was a surprisingly unanimous group that shall plan and develop the service. The elected officials emphasize the importance of parish church more than the employees while matters of faith are more important to the employees. The national documents often points to the importance of tradition. This ambition was not found in any of the groups in the study.
