    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to inspect female ideals during the end of nineteenth-century in Sweden to get a greater understanding of the values that was recognized during the time. To accomplice this I will scrutinize three newspapers with different political standings and compare their descriptions of archetypal women.

The three newspapers are the conservative Dalpilen, The more liberal Norrköpingskuriren and the feministic Idun. Dalpilen and Norrköpingskuriren will describe the two political sides of Sweden that was present at the time while Idun will represent the female thought of the ideals of their own gender as Idun was a newspaper for women and often written by women.

I have utilized among other Conell and his masculinity theory and Yvonne Hirdmans Gender contract theory to get a better understanding for the century I have chosen to study and to get guidance for the material. Both these theories build on a society with strict gender roles which are applied to the nineteenth-century along with explanation in how archetypes are built up and what can affect them. This was something that I needed to keep in mind as a progressed through my study.

The questions I have asked is what ideals are there in the newspapers and which qualities did they focus on. Are there a difference between the female ideals they describe? and if so, why are they different? The result of the study show that all three of the newspapers favors the mother as an ideal. Women was supposed to be a perfect mother and all the qualities for the ideal of women was to make them into an impeccable caretaker. This was the ultimate form of female. The difference between the newspapers lies in their flexibility in the qualities of that ideal.

For example, the conservative Dalpilen thought that a woman should be a housewife and just focus on raising the children. That makes an ultimate mother. Norrköpingskuriren focused more on the working class and where the option to stay at home and raise chi

ldren wasn’t always an option. As such, they preferred if the women stopped working when they got married but didn’t seem to demand that the wife should stay home. Idun on the other hand argued that working doesn’t really influence the female’s ability to raise her children and as such won’t remove their "femininity" as they said.

Bilder som informationsbärare: En jämförande studie av bilder i arkiv2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how images are used and evaluated in a Swedish archival context. Images as of today are very common in society. They are nearly everywhere, particularly in our phones and computers. Therefore the written word is slowly losing it's sovereignty as a carrier of information. With this background the study examines if the images role also have changed in an archival setting.

The following work is a qualitative research study that examines three Swedish archives: the Regional State Archive in Uppsala, Swedish Labour Movement's Archives and Library in Stockholm and the Centre for Business History in Stockholm. Furthermore the study examines how the institutions organize images and how they make them accessible for the public. It also examines what role the image play as a carrier of information in the archive. In more general terms the study also investigates what function the image can have for people in society. The comparison of the archival institutions is a methodological foundation for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with archivists from the three institutions and works as the main source. For the analysis this study uses document theory and a few concepts derived from Terry Cook's archival theory, namely evidence, memory, identity and community.

In terms with the previous research made on the subject this study comes to the result that images have different terms for archiving than other materials, most specifically papers documents. The examined archival institutions are today using the same tools for organizing images as they use for other documents. This can have negative effects on the ability the image has as a carrier of information. In the long run this could cause the image to become a marginalized part of the archive as a whole.

The conclusion this mater's thesis presents is that the image has a potential as a source of information. Especially for groups that aren't previously represented in the archive through traditional paper documents. The image may therefore contribute to the archival pluralism and diversity, as long as the images are treated with the terms they demand as an archival document.

This is a two years master's thesis in Archival Science.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the schoolteachers and parents distribution of the responsibilities of the upbringing of children. To do so my aim is to examine what responsibilities was attributed to the schoolteachers as well as the parents and how the responsibilities could take shape. By utilizing protocols from the Childcare committee 1913-1924 (Barnavårdsnämnden) my aim is to link the questions to the material and examine how this manifested within the committee. I also examined if the committee applied a certain gender construction on the parenting.

I have applied a power perspective derived from Foucault aswell as the usage of Durkehims and Marx theories about the schools role in society and a gender perspective developed by Joan Scott and Yvonne Hirdman.

The results of the study shows that schoolteachers possessed a position of power where their responsibilities over the social upbringing of the pupils reached beyond the confinements of the schools. The schoolteacher was placed with disciplinary responsibilities and was expected to help raise pupils of high morality. Teachers held a high role of participation in the work of the committee and was expected to hold insights of their pupils home situations. The parents showed to be neglected far more in comparison with the teacher but parenthood was nonetheless expected to hold responsibilities. However, parents was not allowed to interfere with the responsibilities of the teacher whereas the teachers role was not constricted to the interior of the school. Regarding mother- and fatherhood the study shows that the mother was given a clear role of parenting while the fathers function was more of an authoritarian background figure. The father was expected to provide for the family and the mother to care for the upbringing.

The study proved that the committee was in a position of power where they could affect the tasks of parenthood. Meanwhile the committee granted schools and teachers positions of power where the teacher’s professional role extended beyond the schools. Within the sphere of parenthood a position of power was showing whereas the mother was attributed a larger responsibilities over the children’s upbringing but with the father acting as the authority of the family.

“What do my emotions matter if mother is sad?” – Filial Piety, Heteronormative Obligations, and Social Exchanges in Beijing Gushi2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A classic among queer works of literature written in Chinese, Beijing Gushi 北京故事 was one of the first Sinophone novels to openly portray homosexual relationships in modern time. Given the first publication of an English translation of the novel in 2016, this thesis represents an attempt to shed some light on the particular connection between filial piety and queer identity in Sinophone communities, along with other unique cultural traits that make queer experiences in Sinophone societies different from their Euro-American counterparts.

The thesis is based on a close reading of Beijing Gushi, and examines how and why the main character, Chen Handong, maintains his four most important relationships in the novel. By use of a theoretical framework based on queer theory and social exchange theory – particularly concepts from the works of Judith Butler and George C. Homans – I argue that traditional expectations associated with filial piety constitute the primary element that guides the main character’s decisions regarding his personal relationships. I find that heteronormativity and material gifts play significant roles in the character’s managing of his social life. While the main character’s attitude towards his own non-heterosexuality goes from complete rejection to relative self-acceptance over the course of the novel, the majority of his important life choices and interpersonal actions are ultimately determined based on perceived social obligations related to heteronormativity and filial piety.

Reifying Game Design Patterns: A Quantitative Study of Real Time Strategy Games2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Communicating design is in many aspects a difficult process. Game design is not only directives on look and feel, but also carries intentionality. To properly convey intentionality, a common abstract vocabulary is a well-established method for expressing design. Game design patterns are an attempt to formalize and establish such a vocabulary. Game design patterns are a debated tool and this paper aims to examine the practical application of a pattern through a quantitative study in order to strengthen the potential for a more cohesive definition of the term. This is done by first establishing a game design pattern through observation of RTS games. The pattern is then studied through implementation in three commercial RTS games. The results focus on quantitative data gathered from AI vs AI matches related to game pacing. Through testing and analysis of the AI matches it can be stated that game design patterns in a contextualized setting supports the idea of using game design patterns as a formal tool. It was further concluded that the AI also came with limitations in how the collected data is applicable to the overall design of the games. Additional studies using quantitative data in conjunction with qualitative observations could lend further support to game design patterns as a useful tool for both researchers and developers.

Vad och hur skriver ett vårdbiträde?: En studie av skriftanvändning inom äldreomsorgen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    instanser inom verksamheten.

Ukraїnas självständighet 1917 i svensk press 1917–19182017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is a quantitative study with elements of qualitative analysis. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate WHAT was written about Ukraine's independence 1917 in Swedish press 1917–1918. The qualitative part of the survey was intended to answer the question if the newspaper's political attitude influenced the news reports during the chosen period. The exact periodization was determined to be between March 1, 1917 and June 30, 1918. This periodization was chosen because of the March Revolution in 1917, which triggered independence declarations in a number of countries oppressed by Moscow, who now saw their chance of freedom. June 1918 became the end of the investigation because it was just when the peace agreement between Ukraine and the Soviet Union was signed.

The source material has been chosen to represent a multitude of ideological orientations. It was liberal, moderate, conservative, liberal and left-wing orientations. The source material consisted of newspaper articles from the following newspapers: Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet, Göteborgs Aftonblad, Svenska Dagbladet, Dalpilen, Kalmar Tidning and Norrskensflamman. Quantitative methodology was used on the source material. This method consisted of a reviewing of newspaper articles in searching of news reports from Ukraine or articles which had something to do with the events in Ukraine. Every newspaper was searched day after day. The crawled material was presented in two chapters representing different periods. The first chapter of the results presented the results from 1917, and more precisely from March to December 1917. The second chapter presented the results from 1918, but also from December 1917, that is, the result from December 1917 through June 1918. The whole result was then discussed in a separate chapter where the qualitative analysis was also discussed.

The result of the quantitative analysis showed that it has been written relatively sparcely about Ukraine's independence although the volume of articles increased from December 1917 and even more in 1918. Sometimes there were articles on the first page. But for the most part, the articles with Ukraine issues were placed among other foreign articles. It was also found in the survey that it was the first World War that drew attention to the newspapers, even though the events in Petrograd and then in Ukraine took more space. This survey also showed that what was written about Ukraine's independence was also what appears in the reference literature. The news reports reported how Ukraine proclaimed independence in March 1917 and later on proclaimed an independent republic in November 1917 when the Bolsheviks conducted their coup d'état in Petrograd. The newspapers also wrote how the Russian Communists sent a declaration of war to Ukraine in December 1917 and about the war that followed. The articles also tell us how negotiations on Ukraine Peace went on in Brest-Litovsk, and how they ended up with alliance between Germany and Ukraine with the campaign against the communists. It was told how the German army marched into Ukraine to free it from the bolsheviks. Until May 1918 there were battles between the German-Ukrainian Army and the Communists. In June 1918 the peace agreement was signed and this survey’s investigation ended.

The survey showed that it was written about Ukraine's independence in all newspapers. Dagens Nyheter had the most news articles linked to the survey. Although the number of articles was not subject for analysis in this survey. The qualitative analysis was based on using Höjelid's theoretical concepts "positive sound" and "negative sound" on the quantitative analysis material. The qualitative analysis’ result showed that it was almost impossible to see the differences between the newspapers because the articles were traded between the newspapers, i.e. the content was copied straight away. It should be noted that not all content was the subject of copying between the newspapers. Copying occurred to a greater extent, but there were still original articles derived from the respective newspaper. Most of the articles were also direct telegrams that were communicated abroad to the newspaper's editors. A lot of these telegrammic articles were sent with a purpose to mislead society. These angled articles were published without further examination in Swedish press. There were articles from, for example, Dagens Nyheter whose editors noted the "strange Petrograd reports" and informed about it for the purpose of enlightening the public. However, as most newspapers were occupied with World War I, as was shown in the source material, the newspaper editorial office was less interested in other foreign events. Therefore, such angled articles could be found in Swedish press on a larger scale.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study presents, interprets and analyzes Seyla Benhabib's discourse ethics, and investigates its implications for religious dialogue as practical discourse. On the basis of the fundamental principles of universal moral respect and egalitarian reciprocity, as well as the idea of the situated moral self, the author proposes ten normative starting points for inter-religious dialogue between Christians and Muslims in Sweden. Aspects of gender and power are commented in particular. The study shows how discourse ethics impose far-reaching demands on the conditions of the dialogue, on the preparation of it as well as on its participants. The continuity of dialogue is emphasized as the overall goal.

En marginaliserad grupp?: SVA-elevers upplevelser av att få sina namn uttalade2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Representation av statslöshet: Framställningen av Rohingyafolket i burmesisk media2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to analyse how the stateless Muslim minority Rohingya from Myanmar are represented in Burmese media. Progress towards democracy has been made in Myanmar since the end of the dictatorship, making it possible for private newspapers to publish in Myanmar and increased the access to rights. However, this positive development has not affected all habitants in Myanmar. The UN still considers Rohingya to be one of the most persecuted people in the world.

In this study, the material consists of articles from The Myanmar Times, Mizzima Business Weekly and The New Light of Myanmar. After assessing Hannah Arendt’s theory about the dependency on citizenship for human rights, and Steve Luke’s theory of power, this study uses the method systematic qualitative text analysis to sort the material. In addition, a critical text analysis inspired by critical discourse analysis is carried out. As a complement, photos are studied using visual text analysis. The main focus is on how Rohingya are represented in the material, and what can be said about Rohingya’s exclusion based on the findings in the material. The study shows that the name Rohingya is avoided in The Global New Light of Myanmar, who uses “Muslim Minority” as well as in The Myanmar Times, where group is often called “Bengali”. However, in Mizzima Business Weekly “Rohingya” is the most common name when describing the group. A key finding is that suppression, i.e. to silence issues concerning Rohingya, to deny their identity and ties to Myanmar, and to not acknowledge that Rohingya are affected by an event in the news, appears to various extents in all three newspapers, which shows how Rohingya are excluded and are often portrayed as “the others”. The study shows that the media is affected by “the power of the thought” and that the inherent paradox of the human rights can be applied in this case, and that in a society a stateless person is rightless and becomes completely excluded from the society. This is manifested to some extent in Mizzima Business Weekly and consistently in The Myanmar Times and The Global New Light of Myanmar.

Folkmusik i konstmusiken: Om tonsättarnas användning av Folkmusikkommissionens utgivningar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The ancient city of Morgantina in Sicily was an important city during the Hellenistic age and probably member of a koinon (a union) under the leadership of Syracuse. Much research has been done on the city of Morgantina, but as far as I know, no study has had the aim to show what role Morgantina played in the Second Punic War. Therefore, this essay focuses on Morgantina during and after the Second Punic War (218–201 BCE). The main questions presented in this essay are what happened to the city after the war and what was the aftermath of the war? What happened to the people in the town and why were some houses abandoned and others not? To answer these questions archaeological evidence (numismatic material and buildings) as well as ancient historians’ narrations have been used (the historians used are Diodorus Siculus, Livy, Cicero and Strabo). The study argues that Morgantina might have been the last important free Greek town in Sicily (and possibly the very last) and that the city probably did not fight actively for either side, but might have provided Rome with grain and therefore taken Rome’s side.

Towards a Coherent Sustainability Ethics: A study on the meaning and moral underpinnings in Sustainability and their relation to consequential and deontological perspectives2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The idea of writing this essay begun as an attempt to enter into the current discussion about the theory and ethics of sustainability. The essay aims to compare the meaning of sustainability with two ethical theories that are currently used in developmental and environmental issues, namely the theories of Martha Nussbaum and Peter Singer, and see how coherent these theories are with the concept of sustainability. In order to achieve the essays aims, the study will have to discuss first issues regarding the ‘meaning of sustainability’ and discuss the challenges in its conceptualisation to finally outline a reasonable framework meaning for sustainability. The paper contributes in this way in forming consistency between what the conceptualisation of sustainability represents and how ethical systems could be more coherent with these conceptualisation efforts. This essay aims to answer how deontological and utilitarian perspectives provide guidance regarding sustainability and if these perspectives are coherent with sustainability as a concept. The essay understands coherence as ideas or structures that are logically compatible and that logically support each other.

This study concludes that there is a possibility to delineate a coherent meaning for sustainability as a two-level meaning structure; one formal meaning where we found the principle of sustainability and without which, we would not be talking about sustainability and a second level, called the substantive meaning, where four main ethical relations arise, and where obligations and responsibilities appear. The study also concludes that there are certainly fundamental moral ideals and moral ideas embedded in sustainability that have the potential to be agreed upon in a global consensus. The formal meaning of continuance (sustainability moral ideal) gives in turn some fundamental moral ideas (normative relations) at a second level of definition.

Additionally, the study shows that it is not self-evident which ethical model is more or less coherent with sustainability but the results indicate that a strong, coherent and egalitarian idea about the value of life, whether as flourished and functional as opportunities and interests, on which many of today's ethical systems are based on, can help an ethical system to be more coherent with the meaning of sustainability.

Det mångbottnade personmuseet: En studie av Gorkijmuseet i Moskva2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study and analyse the Gorky Museum in Moscow, a house museum dedicated to the writer Maxim Gorky. The work explores the socio-political and cultural background for the museum, as well as what is conveyed there today, and how the museum approaches problems that house museums generally struggle with. The empirical part of the study is based on the fieldwork that the author conducted at the Gorky Museum during one month in the autumn of 2016, during which open and participant observation of the daily work at the museum was carried out. Attentive observations and systematic notes from guided tours constitute the basis for the description of the material and immaterial features of the museum. For the chapter on the historical and cultural context concerning the Gorky Museum, literary sources were used.

The results of the study imply that there existed an authorised heritage discourse (AHD) in the Soviet Union that was directly governed by the authorities, that museums in the Soviet Union were politicised in a much more open manner than in the West, and that the young Soviet state needed to form a national identity for which Maxim Gorky and his literature came in handy. Further, they show that what is conveyed at the museum is something more than just Gorky himself, and that the complex relationship between Gorky and the house changes the impression that the visitors to the museum experience. Lastly, they demonstrate that the Gorky Museum is not exempt from dealing with questions regarding authenticity, representativeness, stereotypization and ”genius loci”, i. e. a sense of the lingering presence of the person commemorated. The conclusions to be drawn from this are that the complexity of the Gorky Museum lie in the fact that a collision between different values can be discerned at the museum, that a disharmony between Gorky and the house itself can be perceived, and that there exists more than one ”genius loci” at the Gorky House. Abstract [en]

In Ancient Egypt, names were very important, in this life and the next. Gods had a multitude of names, and kings were usually given five names, but also private individuals could have several names, given at birth or later. One of these names was called rn nfr (the good name), and it was especially prevalent during the Old Kingdom. The term rn nfr slowly disappeared during the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom, but reappeared during the Late Period. The characteristics of all occurrences that could be found of rn nfr from the Old Kingdom and the First Intermediate Period and the Middle Kingdom were studied and compared to the occurrences of rn nfr in the Late Period. They were also compared to the first names of the individuals who wore these rn nfr.The results of this investigation show that there are great differences between the earlier periods and the Late Period, especially in that the names of gods and kings are often prevalent in the rather long rn nfr of the Late Period, possibly used for official and religious purposes. The rn nfr of earlier periods are often short names, which people were probably called, on an everyday basis. They sometimes constitute abbreviations of first names, with phonological changes taking place, in the majority of cases only consisting of three consonants without any apparent meaning, perhaps used from a very early age, and in a few cases taking on the characteristics of true nicknames.

    Abstract

    Four executions and one pardon

    The executioner’s sword and the newspaperman’s pen in Sweden 1874 – 1910

This study examines how three murder cases who lead to a death penalty sentence for the five accused persons are covered in selected contemporary Swedish newspapers. Four of the five condemned persons, three men and one woman, were executed. One man was pardoned. The circumstances in each case are unique. The 1874 murders of Mauritz Upmarks and Johan Larsson in Malmköping, by Gustaf Adolf Eriksson Hjert and Conrad Pettersson Lundqvist Tector, led to the last public executions in 1876 in Malmköping and Visby simultaneously. The murder of Hanna Johansson by her husband, Per Nilsson, and her mother-in-law, Anna Månsdotter, led to the last execution of a woman in Sweden. Her son Per was pardoned. Finally I examine the robbery and murder of Victoria Hellsten at the Gerell exchange office in Stockholm in 1910 by Alfred Ander that led to the only time a guillotine was used in Sweden. It was also the final execution in Sweden.

My aim is to examine how selected national and local newspapers covered these crimes, trials and finally the executions. Are there any traceable differences regarding the treatment of the woman on trial in the articles compared to that of the men? Do local and national mewspapers differ in their reporting? I found that there is a great similarity between the local and the national newspapers with a few exceptions. The woman was not subject to favoritism, but rather more critically judged by the writers and the population in her village.

Previous studies and literature with connections to my study complete the materials that are used in this examination. My conclusion is that all newspapers that I selected have a negative attitude towards the capital punishment and describe the executions as something horrendous in varying degrees. The descriptions of the perpetrators are matter – of – fact while the victims are treated with sympathy. The newspapers differ in some details but generally their coverages of the murders, trails and executions are of the same pattern. A few newspapers present surprising opinions and individual thoughts. I found that while one cannot claim that the newspapers were demanding a banning of the capital punishment they contributed to the ongoing debate on the subject. There is no favoritism displayed in the articles. The woman and the men are treated equally. My conclusion is that the answers to my questions were found in the selected material.

Jesus går på vattnet: Vad händer med bibelberättelsen när den återberättas för barn?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (MMDH) in Santiago, Chile is dedicated to the depiction of a difficult heritage. This museum of memory and human rights narrates the military dictatorship in Chile 1973–1990, a time when thousands of people were subjected to unthinkable human rights violations committed by the Government Junta of Chile.

Memorial museums exist worldwide and aim to depict a specific historical event when people have been victimized by the state. By showcasing the crimes committed by the junta, MMDH seeks to contribute to the culture of human rights to prevent human rights violations from reoccurring in the future; a culture of Nunca Más (Never Again). In this thesis, the permanent exhibitions of MMDH have been studied through the lenses of representation and discourse theory. The purpose has been to understand the way in which the museum depicts the dictatorship and whether the goal of contributing to a human rights culture was visible in the material that is presented in the exhibitions. The results show that MMDH depicts a story using different themes primarily relating to the crimes committed by the Chilean state and the civilian population’s fight for human rights.

In the exhibitions, several themes evoke emotions and can generate a real impact on the visitors. However, the museum presents its material without analysis or interpretation and it disclaims placing the dictatorship in a historical and political context, which can inhibit the educational purpose of the museum. In addition, since the exhibitions lack educational material on human rights and democracy, the categorization of being a museum of human rights with the goal of contributing to a culture of human rights, is insufficient. In the discourse of the exhibitions present at MMDH there is an apparent inclusion and exclusion of narratives which can be explained by the museum’s political link in a country that to this day is undergoing a process of dealing with its past.

What are the specific causes and strategies in relation to stunting in Lesotho?: A study of the perceptions of UNICEF staff members regarding stunting in Lesotho2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Stunting is an issue that affects millions of children all over the world including Lesotho. Whilst Lesotho does not have the highest rates of stunting in the Southern African region, the rates are alarmingly high never the less. This paper serves as an insight into the stunting situation in Lesotho from the perspective of UNICEF. Broadly speaking, this paper looks at stunting from two aspects: firstly, looking at causal factors and next at the strategies to address those causes. The skeleton of this thesis is formed around the 1991 UNICEF malnutrition framework which acts as a guide for the theoretical and empirical chapters of this paper. The theoretical chapter outlines the complex interconnectedness of different causal levels those being structural, underlying and immediate causes. One will notice the causal chain as it soon becomes very obvious. The strategic component is the next major element of the theoretical chapter. Similarly, given the interconnectedness of the causal framework, it becomes clear that a holistic approach is necessary to address stunting at all levels. Addressing only the health consequences is not nearly enough. The empirics strongly support certain elements of the theoretical framework from both a causal and strategic perspective. Poverty, education, water, sanitation and rurality are seen as the leading thematic causal factors, while social protection, water and sanitation, education and health programmes are considered to be the most suitable strategies to address stunting. One will notice that although this does not nearly cover all the various components of the theoretical framework, it does make sense given the mandate of UNICEF. And since the nature of the research is broad, there is certainly plenty of room for more narrow-scoped research to be carried out in terms of the effectiveness of individual nutrition and health programmes applied throughout the region, if not the developing world at large.

    Abstract [en]

This paper covers the JRPG subgenre as it compares to the greater RPG genre. These will be compared through how games can, through their mechanics, be traced back to which types of society the games originate from. These societal types are collectivism and individualism, as defined by Richard Brislin (2000). The games are divided into Japanese games and Western games, and are examined for evidence of societal ties in their gameplay mechanics that tie them to their country of origin, or evidence that contend those ties.

Stimulating Engagement and Learning Through Gamified Crowdsourcing: Development and Evaluation of a Digital Platform2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to develop a gamified crowdsourcing platform for transcription and metadata tagging of digitised text documents, and further to examine whether the platform can stimulate engagement in archives and be used as an educational resource. The case, around which the thesis project is conducted, is the governmental Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its historical documents which were damaged in a fire in 2014.

Theories about engagement, archival pedagogy, and gamification guided the development of the platform. Bosnian-Herzegovinian school children, History teachers, and staff of the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina tested the platform and shared their thoughts of it in focus group discussions and interviews.

The developed platform consists of a game interface, a database, and an interface for results viewing and searching. It is web-based, and coded in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. The platform stimulated engagement among the school children who tested it. They expressed interest in reading and learning more about archival documents, in long-term preservation of information, and in the archive’s mission and future. Judging from the discussions and interviews, the platform could well serve as an educational resource. The History teachers showed interest in using the platform in their teaching, and found support for it in the curriculum for the History subject.

A gamified crowdsourcing platform has been developed, and the perception among school children, History teachers, and archive staff was overall very positive. Crowdsourcing is not just about sourcing out tasks to the crowd. Co-creation of content could furthermore stimulate learning and engagement, and thereby tie a bound between the public and the archive. Gamification can successfully make the overarching goal of crowdsourcing understandable and concrete for the platform users.

'I'm from Barcelona': Boundaries and Transformations Between Catalan and Spanish Identities2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the last decade or so, the multiple political factions in Catalonia have adopted pro-independence initiatives in their platforms following the 2008 financial crisis. Catalonia’s position as representing a minority culture in the face of the centralized administration of Madrid presents a contentious history of fighting for the right ‘to be’, culminating in what today is viewed by many as an identity crisis.

Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Barcelona, this thesis examines how informants construct and transform their socio-cultural identities in the framework of the independence movement in Catalonia. It places informants’ experiences in the theoretical realm of ethnic boundaries, analyzing central issues of Catalan language normalization vis à vis the historical imposition of Spanish as the national language. These themes are broadened in light of the recent upsurge of Catalan secession, and explores identity politics within the background of Spanish and Catalan nationalisms.

Kulturfrämjande eller läsfrämjande?: En studie i läsfrämjande aktiviteter på två folkbibliotek2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how two libraries, Sundbyberg bibliotek and Rinkeby bibliotek,

work with activities that promote and stimulate reading among children and youths. The main purpose behind

this study is to examine what kind of activities the libraries offer, how they are received by the children and

youths participating in them and lastly how the libraries deal with children and youths who are disinterested in

    reading.

The theoretical base for this study is discourse analysis, which is used to distinguish a structure in the interviews

with the librarians from the two libraries. Furthermore, research results in the field of activities that promote

reading among children and youths form a backdrop for the study as well as a framework onto which the

    empirical results are hung.

The methods used in this study are qualitative interviews and text analysis. One librarian from Sundbyberg

bibliotek has been interviewed and two librarians from Rinkeby bibliotek. The text analysis was based on policy

documents, the websites of the respective libraries and lastly the social media where the libraries are active.

The main results show that the libraries have similar attitudes regarding the importance of reading for children

and youths. Furthermore, the librarians all showed a wide variety of activities that are intended to stimulate

reading for children and youths. These activities can be divided into either direct or indirect reading stimulating

activities. The direct activities deal with reading in a literal sense and books are a clear topic. The indirect activities,

however, are a way to mediate between the child and the youth, and reading. Instead of having books as a

topic, these activities are overtly about something else, such as films or playtime for toddlers. Reading is implied

but never mentioned directly. This division is in place because children and youths are less inclined to participate

in activities that are overtly about reading since there are a large number of children and youths who do not appreciate

    reading.

Säger man på båda sätt/sätten?: En studie av substantivets speciesform i nominalfraser med båda eller vardera som inledande attribut2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

1962 a new swedish schoolsystem was accepted called Comprehensive school. The study observes how the discussion of the new schoolsystem looks like in the Union magazine Skolvärlden during the 1970-1969. The study shows how teachers’ thoughts about a schoolsystem which are including all children, no matter what economic statues the have got. Teachers’ need more time to connect with the pupils’.  In the other schoolsystem they did not have that kind of issues that might occure now. Some children from a less education background find it difficult to fit in in the comprehensive school. Teachers’ do not know how to handle those children which are interrupting their classes. As a reason of that special-need education are developed during the decade. The reason of that is that all children in Sweden from now have to go to school for nine years according to the law.

Teachers’ also believe that the politicians are interfering a lot in school matters. As an example of that Ingvar Carlsson are saying that school need time to reconnect to the new circumstances. Though the former minister of education Olof Palme in the beginning of the decade says that teachers actually need to be more aware of the importance of internationalization in every subject not just the social subjects. Instead teachers rather will prefer to work by them self to implement the new conditions from the curricula and new research. They should instead leave the education to the teachers that actually have got the education and the knowledge about how to teach children. Teachers’ are also irritated of the low wages according to their harder labor circumstances. They believe that other parts of the labor market have got better incomes and conditions.

Skolvärlden thinks that LO as an organisation connected to the Socialdemokratic party has priveligies that they do not. In the 1975 teachers are prepared to fight for better circumstances and the are very angry at LO who do not want to support them. Skolvärlden thinks that the reason of that is because LO does not think that education is important, which they actually should have thought. The reason of that is because education from now on is very important for a society development.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Emanating in a Swedish and British context, this study seeks to map and discuss contemporary performative tendencies within the countries’ respective open access movements. This is done through a Posthumanist and Material-Semiotic analysis of nine research funders policy documents for open access to scientific results. Using an actor-network-theoretical apparatus of concepts, the study seeks to assess actors, actants, intermediaries, mediators, agencies, connections and networks in the policy documents of the respective research funders. The study therefore aspires to illuminate the complexities of these networks, similarities and differences between the two countries’ networks and what these networks can say about contemporary tendencies within the Swedish and British open access movements respectively.

Actors with their associated agencies and performative connections are analysed and compiled in tables according to the respective research funders. The output is thereafter visualised in a schematic network model and the performative tendencies are assessed. While Swedish council Vetenskapsrådet is defined as a ”spider in the web” of the research funder network, the British network is more fragmentary. As for Bioscientific networks, the Swedish network is of a more peripheral sort while the British consists of sprawling nodes. Within Health Science, there is for both countries a clear direction towards the fortification of infrastructures for data deposition. This can also be said regarding the deposition of monographs in Social Science and the Humanities. These tendencies are discussed in light of international open access research. It is proposed that research funders, libraries and other professionals active within the open access movements considers these tendencies in the forming of service activities. It is also emphasized that similar studies ought to be done in order to further map open access-networks.

What Level Design Elements Determine Flow?: How Light and Objects Guide the Player in Overwatch and Doom2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a comparative study between Overwatch (2016) and Doom (2016) to determine how these fast-paced games facilitate flow in their gameplay. The second chapter looks at formal definitions of flow and level design to establish a vocabulary for following chapters. Through formal analysis the level designs of both games are then examined to establish what elements in them guide players and keep the flow in gameplay. The thesis also examines how the initial gameplay design principles, which are rooted in the older shooter genre, have impacted the level design. The author uses screenshots from both games, interviews with the design teams and published literature on game design for the study. It was found that the architectural design of a level in hero-based gameplay (Overwatch (2016)) could control the pacing by changing the elements that enable certain types of movement such as climbing or creating setups that favor one team over the other. On an individual player level, flow is kept with intentional placement of light and bright colors to guide the player. While Doom (2016) uses different abilities and movement sets for its hero, the tools of guiding the player proved to be very similar but with heavier focus on environmental markings and lights. In both cases the look of these guiding tools was adapted to fit into the game world without breaking the player’s immersion.

    Abstract [sv]

Ecocertifications and quality labels: For whom and why, in the case of Laponia.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract There are a lot of ecocertifications in Sweden for a variety of different categories; for example the Swan, which is a label for both hotels and products; KRAV, a label for farms and what farms pro- duce; Nature’s Best, a label for tourist adventures; the Sápmi Experience, a newly developed label for Sámi tourism, and The Green Key, a certification offered by Håll Sverige Rent for hostels, ho- tels, mountain cabins and camping grounds. Nature’s Best and the Green Key I have chosen as the focus for this paper, because they are the most relevant for my research. I will also give some atten- tion to Sápmi Experience because it is an interesting development in indigenous tourism. In the World Heritage area of Laponia, where I conducted fieldwork, there are several actors that have in- terest in the ecotourism business. Some of the actors are Sámi, the indigenous people whose princi- pal livelihood in Laponia is reindeer herding, and some are non-Sámi, like the Swedish Tourist As- sociation (STF) or other small-scale businesses. Some of them have the Nature’s Best label on their adventures, some do not. I find the Sámi culture and way of life very interesting, and since they are a big part of the World Heritage area Laponia landscape and an indigenous people, it was natural for me include them in this thesis. In this thesis I want to address the questions of for whom and why there are ecocertifications and quality markings. Are they for tourists, for traveling agencies, for people living in popular tourist areas, or perhaps for the environment?

Vem var det som kom på vägen?: Bibelbruk i Britt G. Hallqvists psalmer2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Rising Female Empire?: Exploring the potential barriers women face in achieving leadership positions in the humanitarian sector2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research aims to explore how women and men view and perceive potential barriers to women achieving leadership positions in the humanitarian sector. Female leadership is so far an under-researched area within the humanitarian sector, so it is unknown whether females encounter any barriers in accessing and attaining leadership positions. Three categories were identified; identity, perception and challenges through which the views and barriers are explored. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two organisations; Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) to further understand the perceptions. The empirical findings are analysed through thematic analysis, against the theoretical foundation of the explanation of the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions and how gender impacts organisations. Findings indicate that both men and women perceive that there are a number of barriers that women face under each of the three identified categories. The majority of findings are visible under the perception category which explores the influence of the boy’s network and the cemented organizational cultures. Findings also indicate that gender and the potential barriers that women face are not openly talked about, nor perceived as important, as is the need for diversity in humanitarian settings. This thesis highlights the contradictions and ambiguity of how barriers are perceived amongst humanitarian practitioners and organisations.

Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the experience of reorientation from being in relationships with men to be in relationships with women. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with 8 women between the ages of 28-67 years old. The purpose of the study is to analyze the women’s narratives on this experience in relation to sexuality, relationships, embodiment and various norms associated with heteronormativity. The theoretical framework for the study is queer phenomenology and the interpretational work has been conducted with close reading combined with narrative analysis.

The study shows that the women perceive themselves as freer within the lesbian relationship, because they experience that the lesbian relationship does not have to confirm heteronormative expectations to the same extent as a heterosexual relationship. Further this is also one of the main themes throughout the material and thus the thesis: the women sense, for example, that their bodies do not have to conform heterosexual norms for how they do, move or embody themselves. Within the study I argue that this perceived freedom could be understood in relation to the former heterosexual life as well as an overall insight to how power structures specifically between men and women works to subordinate women.

Visby Treasure Haunt: An Evaluation of Impactful Design Patterns in a Pervasive Horror Game2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Treasure hunts are one of the earliest forms of pervasive games, and there are documentationsof them since the mid 19th century. In this study, the work by Björk & Pietz on design patternsin pervasive games are used as a base for analysing the impact of design patterns in a horrorthemed treasure hunt, a so called Treasure haunt. Through focus group interviews andtheoretical thematic analysis, 16 different patterns were analysed.

The most prominent themes found were Player-player proximity which was expressedthrough the teams' interest in each other's activities and whereabouts, and Commonexperience which was evident in the interviews when the participants excitedly helped eachother retelling their experience of the Treasure haunt. It is also strongly suggested that theexecution of game design patterns affect how impactful players perceive the individualpatterns, and the methods used in this study could be useful to test out game prototypes bygame designers who want to create more impactful pervasive games. Still it could be useful toconsider Player-player proximity as a useful tool to create suspenseful pervasive games, andto consider the value of a shared experience between players.

The Impact of Visual Properties on Player Habits and Game Sessions2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to provide a foundation in regard to information and cause correlation for future research about player retention and game session times based on visual properties. (such as colour values) This study can later be applied within software development. An online quantitative survey about play sessions and player habits is conducted and the conduct of this research is aimed at helping art directors make conscious and deliberate choices about the art styles for products where the visuals may impact player retention and game sessions. By knowing how visual elements such as colour values, shapes and contrast impact game play intensity and player engagement, and ultimately the end time spent during play sessions, art directors can make informed decisions to help impact player behaviours and habits. The paper includes subjects such as colour effects on humans (mental and physical), how human eye sight functions and how this should affect designs, effective use of visuals, eye fatigue, and visual communication. This study of visual properties and play sessions concludes that visuals have a definitive impact on how the game is perceived and processed by the player, leading to situations where the same mechanics can be much more intensive if presented using specific forms of visuals.

Combining Shape, Color and Postures for Ambiguous Character Roles2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how character design guidelines can be combined and remixed to create characters whose motivations are ambiguous to the viewer. I investigate some common guidelines that character artists generally follow when designing characters; summarized in a literature review, and then I test various applications of these guidelines through online surveys. I analyze the qualitative data from these surveys to answer the question of how flexible these guidelines are and how far they can be stretched. The study includes the design guidelines for color, shape and posture of the character, to see how each element is added to different kind of characters and how it affects the interpretation when changed. The final part of the study is done with a second online survey collecting qualitative data, including self-created characters built from the guidelines found for the protagonist or the antagonist and the results of the first survey. Two different designs are created and then changed to different versions, where the color scheme, shape or pose is reversed to the other’s role. The results collected from the online survey showed that by just changing color, shape and posture separately; the character is interpreted in new ways – which can be used when creating characters that are supposed to be hard to read. With the change of each separate element and by having the design elements counteract each other, the characters were read as good by about half the participants, while the other half interpreted it as evil. Depending on which design elements that were changed, opinions ranged between characters that are hiding their true nature, to characters that are trying to be good or a character that is supposed to betray the main character. By changing the two factors of color and shape at the same time, however, showed that the character was interpreted as almost strictly either good or evil.

The right to live in the community as the right to have rights2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present thesis explores Article 19 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which recognizes the right of all persons with disabilities to live in the community, with choices equal to others. The relationship between Article 19 and the other articles of the Convention are explored, in order to discuss the role of Article 19 in the Convention. The thesis examines whether the right to live in the community, set out in Article 19, can be considered as the most central right of the Convention. The thesis applies the legal analytical method, and it is based on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; the communications of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; official reports of the United Nations as well as international non-governmental organizations; and scientific articles from books and journals. By using Arendt’s idea of “the right to have rights” as a theory, this thesis argues that the right to live in the community, contained in Article 19, constitutes the right to have rights for persons with disabilities and therefore it can be considered as the most central right of the Convention.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to examine how archivists work as consultants and how they perceive their professional role.  The research emanates from the notion of resources and how these relate to aspects like environment and roles. The resources that the consultant can use in their work are dependent on which environment they are located in. The resources and the environment in turn effect the archivist’s role and the exertion of their profession.

The study focuses on three Swedish archivists that are employed at the city archive of Stockholm and work as consultants to businesses of the city. The empirical study is based first on observations and then interviews.

Grounded theory is used as a method, initially in the purpose of finding a theory that originates from the viewpoint of the informants. The results from this analysis highlight the way the consultants use resources in their everyday work. Theories concerning roles and environment are used to show how the insufficiency or availability of resources effect the roles and work of the consultants, as described here above.

The result of the analysis show that the consultant’s role changes depending on which environment they are located in and whether or not they have access to certain resources. For example, time can both be an asset and a limitation. When the consultants work in an environment for a short period of time, their role are seen as an expert and they also advance in the hierarchy of the customer’s company. Simultaneously, the shortage of time can also pressure the consultant to make a less sufficient job. This in turn effects the role that the consultants have within their own establishment, in this case the city archive. Because of the shortage of time the consultants are, occasionally, instead seen as “sloppy” or not even considered to be real archivists.

The study also shows that the role as a consultant might enable the archivist to better market their knowledge and become a more significant part of companies’ and businesses’ everyday work, and furthermore that additional research is needed.
