    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this one-year master thesis in archival science was to examine how municipalities take regulations concerning public records into account when they use Facebook. Another aim was to examine the involvement of archivists, registrars or similar staff in the management of the regulations. Since Swedish archival theory and practice has a close connection to the application of these regulations, such an examination was hopefully going to reveal tendencies of importance for archival science. The method used to collect information was a web questionnaire and the result was based on answers from 21 municipalities with an official Facebook page. The questionnaire showed that six of the municipalities regarded documents originating from their Facebook page as public records. Three did not, and a large group had not yet decided how to treat these documents. Only three municipalities did archive documents from Facebook. The involvement of archivists, registrars and similar personnel was generally very small, even though regulations concerning public records had more often been taken into account in the municipalities that had informed this personnel about the use of an official Facebook page. The difference in management between the municipalities was together with the demand for national guiding principles indicating difficulties in applying the regulations to social medias like Facebook. The fact that most of the municipalities that had taken the regulations into account had come to the conclusion that Facebook generated public records, together with the fact that national guiding principles presented during the work with this thesis had the same interpretation, indicated that documents originating from Facebook will be a part of Swedish public records in the future. The difference in management and the demand for guidance also indicated a need for better division of responsibilities and a more active approach in the future, to ensure that the regulations concerning public records are taken into account early and correctly when authorities starts to use new medias.

    Abstract [sv]

    The purpose of this study has been to find out what concepts of user participation exits in the theory formation of Library 2.0. The study has also investigated if theories about Library 2.0 have been affected by the practical experiences made by the implementations of Library 2.0 in library environments.

    The source material consists of texts published in the international journals Library Review, Library Management, or Journal of Documentation, within the years of 2005-2011. The method used is the critical discourse analysis, mostly inspired by Norman Fairclough.  The critical discourse analysis is different from the discourse analysis since it acknowledge the ability of changes. Thus, this study focus more on processes of change than other discourse analysis within the field of LIS (Library and Information Science).

    Four discourses were found in the selected source material – the Social Plurality Discourse, the IT- Pedagogical Discourse, the Market Discourse and the Expert Discourse. A positive view of user participation in library activities was found in the first three of these, even if the Social Plurality Discourse often presented a critical view on the technological emphasis in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse has a negative approach to user participation in general, and especially to user tagging functions in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse is the most common in the texts published in 2011 and often uses arguments based on practical experiences that show that the users, so far, have not participated in Library 2.0-services. These arguments have the potential to cause change in the discourse practice of the other discourses here presented. However, the frame of this study is to narrow to evaluate if such a change has actually taken place.

    The study also shows that the different discourses often have different meanings about what the user wants and needs. There might be a risk that the position “user” is being exploited to legitimate the mission that each discourse claims to be the most important for the library.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    In this master´s thesis I primarily investigate librarians´ and teachers´ conceptions of collaboration between libraries and schools and their conceptions of childrens´reading. Secondary I investigate the contents of laws concerning libraries and schools and also the school curriculums concerning the subject field of the Swedish language. My theoretical point of departure is that of social constructionism. I use two models in my analysis. One is a model of collaboration created by Patricia Montiel-Overall, called TLC (Teacher Librarian Collaboration), which grades collaboration from the lowest level (A) to the highest (D). The other model is created by Staffan Thorsson and is a model for understanding different kinds of reading strategies. I chose to study one public library and one elementary school. At the public library I interviewed the manager, the children´s librarian and the literature pedagogue. At the elementary school I interviewed the headmaster, two teachers who are teaching the Swedish language (one junior-level teacher and one senior-level teacher) and the school librarian. I used a hermeneutical method when I analyzed both my interviews and the laws and curriculums mentioned above.

    In my analysis I discovered all levels of collaboration, except for the highest one (D). Everyone, except for the school librarian, seemed more or less content with the lower degrees of collaboration. The teachers´ perceptions of the librarians were quite traditional. Even though all of the librarians had previous teaching experience and education they were not seen as pedagogues by the teachers. Especially in the case of the school librarian this became a problem, because it seemed to inhibit a development of the collaboration between them. In the laws and curriculums that I looked into collaboration between schools and libraries were never mentioned. The reading promotion seemed to be based on two strategies: pragmatical and emancipatorical. The pragmatical strategy led to looking at children as “becomings”, the emancipatorical one led to looking at children as “beings”.

    Abstract [en]

    This master’s thesis looks at discourses that use the pronoun ”hen”. The media debate in Sweden over this pronoun in 2012 started in connection with the publishing of a children’s picture book: Kivi och monsterhund, by Jesper Lundqvist and Bettina Jansson. The essay investigates how eight librarians, who take an interest in and work with gender issues, talk about the pronoun hen and about this picture book and other books that have characters which are not named as a sex/gender.

    The essay takes a discursive perspective on reality and on the construction of knowledge and carries out a discourse analysis of the librarians’ talk in the qualitative interviews that were made for this study. In the analysis of these interviews Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of the gender system takes a central part.

    The result of the analysis is seven discourses that are central to the librarians talk about books and gender and where the pronoun hen is a focus or a related issue. The essay argues that gender categorization is a dominant discourse in our western society and that certain uses of the pronoun hen, especially the discourse named as the Human-discourse, challenges this domination. The discourses that most librarians used were within the reasoning of the dominant discourse of gender categorization. A conclusion is that the meaning of the pronoun hen is not determined by any one discourse but that there may be a political intervention working towards integrating the pronoun hen into the dominant discourse of gender categorization and thereby neutralising the pronoun.

    Abstract [en]

    This two years master's thesis in Library and Information science, examines how the implementation of new technical equipment can affect how staff in public libraries organize their work and activities in the library. One Swedish public library in specific is the subject of research in this thesis, which has been anonymized as Kvarntuna city library. The study takes place in the beginning of the implementation of RFID-technology in the library. RFID, which stands for Radio Frequency Identification, is supposed to make the handling with different types of media in the library more efficient and in connection with the implementation one wants to reorganize work and activities in the library to make it even more efficient and also create a modern library.

    The thesis' method is qualitative interviews with six members of the staff. The theoretical framework of the thesis is a sociocultural perspective, especially inspiered by Roger Säljö, a Swedish professor in pedagogical psychology. The sociocultural perspective emphasizes physical and intellectual tools as important components in everything people do, for example when learning, thinking, taking action and interacting with others in different contexts. Tools has an medieting effect. The thesis' result and analysis is presented thematically in different levels of contexts: the mental context, the physical context, the communicative context and the historical context.

    The sociocultural perspective makes it possible to understand the implementation of RFID in itself, rather than the actual technology, as a tool that is used to change the way work is organized in the library. It can also be seen as a screen through which it is possible for the interviewed staff to think and reflect how a different way of organizing the work would be. Some statements indicate that it is difficult to see what could change in the way the work is organized when implementing RFID, and all of the interviewed persons make some kind of statement that they know little about what a different way of organizing the work is or that it is too early in the implementation to tell or know something about that. However, what was expressed in the interviews indicates that the implementation is a tool in the making and the implementation itself can be seen as the reorganized way of work or a start of it. This is since tools has an developing effect on both actions, thoughts and organizations. Therefore we can see a discrepancy between what the interviewed persons first said, and what they later expressed. Finally, from a sociocultural point of view one can see that people have a big opportunity to control tools, in libraries too, and use them according to their purposes. Technology is therefore not a threat to libraries' existence, but can rather be seen as an opportunity to develop the organization.

    Abstract [en]

    In the new Library Act of 2014, it is stated that public library supply should be characterized by quality. To investigate what this means for the library, I do a functional analysis of ideas of librarians' views on quality and how they work with purchasing, weeding and mediation. I have chosen to limit the essay to fiction for adults in Swedish public libraries. By combining the basal idea analysis, where I investigate librarians' ideas about quality, with an operational analysis of ideas, where I examine the effects librarians' quality ideas get for the daily work, Iwant to find out the librarians' quality ideals.

    The material I analyze consists of 18 questionnaires, filled out by librarians with responsibility for purchasing and / or thinning in libraries across Sweden. The analysis is done with an analytical schedule, that consists of a number of opposing ideal types taken from previous research on quality, purchasing, thinning or mediation. In this way I want to show how librarians quality idea and practical work relate to previous quality ideas and ways of working.

    The result shows two in many ways opposing ideas of quality: craftsmanship, where quality sits in the work's aesthetic, and impact on the reader, where quality arrisis in the meeting with the reader. Put in context, idea number one can be seen in quality definitions where quality is seen as relatively objective, where experts best can judge a work's quality. The second quality idea is often associated with a user-defined and subjective quality. One can also see how it is a special kind of impact, development, that is associated with quality.

    If we look instead at the operational analysis we can see how librarians, especially in the work of purchasing, promote the popular, both in terms of authors, titles and genres. The librarians purchase a lot on demand and use circulation figures to see what needs to be purchased: that which it lent much. Popularity rather than quality is what decides what should be purchased, except for literature of very low quality that is not bought at all. Also in weeding circulation figures is used; even though literature of very high quality is moved to the magazine instead of beeing weeded. Regarding the mediation of literature, librarians to some extent try to lead their users toward literature of higher quality, but they are careful not to judge neither reader or literature. When giving advice on literature, it is from one reader to another. It is important that the readers themselves choose what and how they want to read. User influence is what steer the work of purchase, weeding and mediation.

    The librarians quality ideas only to a very limited extent influence the librarians practical work, why I believe that it is impossible to speak of a quality ideal. Instead I want to describe the librarians' way of thinking about the library's literature as a value ideal. Furthermore, I would call the librarians value ideal a customer-driven value ideal, where the user is seen as an enlightened and well-informed customer with both the right and the knowledge to determine what the library should purchase and prioritize.

    The emotional part of a museum experience is being debated and there is research pointing towards the affective part of learning. The purpose of this study is to examine how museum pedagogues reason about the usage of affective learning in their work and to investigate whether they consider affective pedagogy is a part of their work or not. Furthermore how they consider themselves working, or not working, with feelings in their pedagogy.

    A key factor in this study has been to work interdisciplinary with both museum pedagogy and social science with theoretical perspectives of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear, and with theories such as Feelings & materiality and Pedagogy of Feeling. Methodologically a qualitative interview study museum pedagogues have been used together with observation of four Swedish state- and country museums.

    In this thesis it is shown that the interviewed museum pedagogues indeed have acknowledged the fact that the museum is an affective place, but the interviewed had different way of make use of feelings. They all agree on the fact that feelings can support the learning process, and that all the different feelings have their own effect on learning. Also that the museum pedagogues have some influence on the feeling that the exhibitions are to emit, which could be used in the pedagogues favor if the exhibition consists of hard and problematic feelings. However, in contrast to this it seems that few of the museum pedagogues discuss the affective influence of a upcoming exhibition or program, or evaluate a project in what feeling the visitors experienced during the visit.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines how images are used and evaluated in a Swedish archival context. Images as of today are very common in society. They are nearly everywhere, particularly in our phones and computers. Therefore the written word is slowly losing it's sovereignty as a carrier of information. With this background the study examines if the images role also have changed in an archival setting.

    The following work is a qualitative research study that examines three Swedish archives: the Regional State Archive in Uppsala, Swedish Labour Movement's Archives and Library in Stockholm and the Centre for Business History in Stockholm. Furthermore the study examines how the institutions organize images and how they make them accessible for the public. It also examines what role the image play as a carrier of information in the archive. In more general terms the study also investigates what function the image can have for people in society. The comparison of the archival institutions is a methodological foundation for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with archivists from the three institutions and works as the main source. For the analysis this study uses document theory and a few concepts derived from Terry Cook's archival theory, namely evidence, memory, identity and community.

    In terms with the previous research made on the subject this study comes to the result that images have different terms for archiving than other materials, most specifically papers documents. The examined archival institutions are today using the same tools for organizing images as they use for other documents. This can have negative effects on the ability the image has as a carrier of information. In the long run this could cause the image to become a marginalized part of the archive as a whole.

    The conclusion this mater's thesis presents is that the image has a potential as a source of information. Especially for groups that aren't previously represented in the archive through traditional paper documents. The image may therefore contribute to the archival pluralism and diversity, as long as the images are treated with the terms they demand as an archival document.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

    In this two years master's thesis, discourse analytic tools have been used in an analysis of the construction ofusers with disability in four Stockhholm-based library plans. The analysis has been aimed at investigating whatimage of people with disabilities that emerge in the texts and how it can be related to the libary plans perceptionof normality. One purpose was to examine to what extent users with disabilities are included as full blown usersin the texts and if not, how they are constructed as a deviation.The theoretical foundation of this thesis is made up by the discourse theories of Laclau and Mouffe withaddition of Michel Foucault's theory of the docile body. By virtue of these theories one of the aims has been touncover the constructionist traits of the library plans exception of disability.The main questions this study seeks to answer are; how are users categorized in the library plans, which usergroups are mentioned and how are users with disabilities portrayed? Furthermore, the essay means to discoverthe most prominent user discourses in the library plans and to investigate how the portrayal of people withdisabilities can be related to the conception of normality and general user discourses.These questions are to be answered firstly by an investigation of user categorization, which is aimed at theconstruction and analysis of user taxonomies and consequences regarding the identity of disability. Secondly,using Laclau and Mouffes discourse theory as a methodological foundation a chain of eqivalense is created toreveal the main characteristics regarding users with disabilities.The analysis also focuses on user discourses, which are grouped into two main areas with themes revolvingaround the individual and the market, and collective groups and culture. Affiliated with the former is a marketorienteddiscourse, containing themes of, among others, the mediation of information and accentuation of ICTservices.In the latter a discourse that revolved around the reading of books emerged. Besides this there was alsoan accentuation of the library as a public room, various participatory activities and cultural experiences. Acomparison between discourse and the image of users with disabilities was undertaken which revealed differentlevels of coherence, resulting in either exclusion or inclusion.

    Abstract [en]

    In Spring 2008 Sebastiano del Piombo (1485-1547) was dedicated an exhibition in Rome, where he was introduced from Venice by the banker Agostino Chigi in Villa Farnesina 1511. The painting L´uomo in armi (1511-1512) was the poster for the exhibition and most probably a self-portrait. It is similar to the unidentified portrait Testa di giovane by Peruzzi in grisaille in the Villa Farnesina. With a queer perspective it proposes Sebastiano del Piombo as a lover of Agostino Chigi parallell with the young spouse Francesca Ordeaschi portrayed as Dorotea (1511-1512). After the death of Rafael in 1520 Sebastiano del Piombo was considered the most skilful painter in Rome. His many majestic homoerotic portraits with virtù correspond to the results of Guido Ruggiero in Machiavelli in love, sex, self and society in he Italian Renaissance (2007) about sexual identities and selfrepresentation in different consensusrealities. Ruggiero is inspired by Foucault and discusses masculinity rereading private letters by the Florentine politician Niccolò Machiavelli and contemporary literature. The exhibition of Sebastiano del Piombo was esthetically impressive but did not answer questions from a modern visitor. The catalogue is imposing but fatally prim avoiding the sex, self and society in Renaissance Rome and Venice so obvious in the art of Sebastaino del Piombo.

    Portals of beauty

    The county of Hälsingland is well-known for its large, red-painted farms decorated with impressing porches. In Forsa though, there are white doors typical for this parish. They are decorated with ornaments like flowers, fabulous beasts and biblical inscriptions. The aim of this essay is to compare doors created by the carpenters in Forsa Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust with the portals by the artist Pehr Westman in the parish of Hemsö, Ångermanland, at the beginning of the 19th century. The carpenters are studied in their social, economical, cultural and architectural context. Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust developed characteristic mixtures of rococo, Swedish Classicism, empire for decoration of doors, portals, interiors, and furniture. They belonged to a social category called outsiders who were not farmers but often farm-hands, tenement soldiers and craftsmen. Their work can be studied as artistic interpretations of the local mentality, its normsystem, style-codex. The portals of Pehr Westman in Hemsö, Ångermanland, are considered as independent works by a self-conscious talented artist who did not follow a local aesthetic system. Westman was a farmer himself, but delivered artistically expressiv Gustavian portals to local farmers, mansions, burghers in nearest town Härnösand, and Stockholm, where he also had his education. Pehr Westman introduced the Swedish Classicism in Ångermanland. His local cultural knowledge and the style of the regional rural architecture facilitated his introducation of a new style. Storsnickare in Norrland were stylists in independent pre-industrial communities aware of new fashion styles, and of the different tastes in other parishes and nearest town. The craftsman who was at the one with the aesthetics of the parishioners and could add some innovation, was the most sought after, in Hälsingland as well as Ångermanland.

    The Villa Farnesina in Trastevere in Rome, built 1506-1511 for the rich banker Agostino Chigi from Siena is a Sienese Renaissance-villa in which noble and harmonious architecture and pictorial decoration fuse into a synthesis. The sober volumetric and spatial articulation of the Villa, devised by the architect, painter and theatrical designer Baldassare Peruzzi from Siena, is a perfect setting for the rich decorative programme of the interior frescoed by great masters as Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Peruzzi himself and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma. Villa Farnesina was built as a permanent and representative habitation for Chigi and his young spouse Francesca Ordeaschi whom he married in 1519, framed by frescoes with evident allusions to the glory of the banker, the ancient world, eroticism and love. The bedchamber that was to receive the spouses was the most intimate room in the Villa. Chigi wanted to allude to its function and commissioned the decoration from Bazzi, whose nickname derived from his habits. Beneath a magnificent coffered ceiling with erotic motifs he decorated the walls with a fresco cycle showing the wedding of Alexander the Great and his bride Roxana. The centerpiece of the narrative is the scene of the imminent consummation of the marriage, assisted by two men who are Alexander´s lover and the god of marriage. The decoration programme of Villa Farnesina reveals sexual norms, values and conventions, which can also be seen in the context of Sodoma´s work in Siena, where he married and settled down after leaving his commitment Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican to Raphael. Influenced by Raphael and Michelangelo he successfully introduced la maniera moderna from Rome, including a spectacular personal lifestyle. Sodoma´s work is characterized by a striking sensual homoerotic charisma. In the Sienese frescocycles in Abbazia Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Oratorio di San Bernardino, the church of San Domenico women as well as men are flirting with each other. He had committments in prestigious environments as Palazzo Comunale, the Cathedral, Santa Maria della Scala, palaces and churches all over the republic of Siena. The organization of sexuality in his home-town seem to have given Sodoma a more solid artistic and social reputation than among art historians of the 20th century. Art history is a prim bourgeois discipline, which except for some Renaissance-experts in the 19th century focusing on the Florentine Renaissance has marginalized this Sienese eminent notorious Renaissance-artist. A queer, ethnological and historical reading of Villa Farnesina in Rome and initial impression of the sexual context of Sodoma´s work in the republic of Siena of the 16th century indicates a considerable appreciation of his homoerotic work as well as his personal image. Above all it reveals a flagrant heteronormativity and its mechanisms in the discipline of Art History in the 20th century, marginalized by Sodoma in Villa Farnesina.

    Around the world there is a rush in nominating tangible and intangible sites for UNESCO’s World Culture Heritage List. The requirements for nomination are that the sites have "universal value for mankind", that they are unique and authentic, and there is a need to secure the sites’ sustainable development by opening them up for the tourist industry. Sweden has a total of fourteen natural and cultural heritage sites on the list, one of which is a natural site, twelve are cultural sites, and one is a mixed site. It was anticipated that the large timbered red-painted farmhouses of Hälsingland in the north of Sweden would be listed in June 2009. ICOMOS, however, came to another conclusion and deferred the nomination.

    The nomination process has lasted for over ten years and has been a painstaking process involving the local communities and the county administration board in the county town of Gävle. The local people are partly thrilled, because they assume that there is money to earn when they open up their homes for tourists; an income that for some is badly needed because of the deterioration of the buildings due to the high costs of renovation. But some are openly critical to the entire enterprise, which is seen as a status project for some politicians and threat to the landscape by disturbing the harmony between the built environment, people and the natural landscape. In a cultural heritage nomination process, a complicated interaction arises between expert knowledge and local knowledge, which generates insights that are crucial to capture and dress in words to be able to formulate a successful world heritage proposal and not the least to make it operational.

    This paper analyzes the nomination process of the Swedish heritage site Farms and Villages in Hiilsingland (2007) for UNESCO's World Heritage List. It was anticipated that the large timbered red-painted farmhouses of Halsingland in the north of Sweden would be listed in June 2009, but ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) came to another conclusion,  deferred  the  nomination  and  returned  it  to  the  Swedish  authorities  for improvements.

    The  nomination  process  lasted  for  over  10  years  and  has  been  a  painstaking  process involving the local communities and the county administration board in the county town of Gavle. The costs were estimated to be 15 million Swedish Crowns (1.6 million EURO) which did not trickle down to the owners of the farmhouses. The local people were nonetheless thrilled because they assumed that a nomination would benefit them economically, especially if they were prepared to join the tourist circus and make their homes accessible for visitors. The extra income was badly needed since the restoration costs for these large houses in most cases can only with difficulties be carried by the individual house owner. But some were openly critical to the entire enterprise and they saw it as a status project for some politicians and a threat to the perceived harmony between the traditionally built environment and the landscape. A nomination would cause a disruption between old and new ways of living instead of continuity. In a cultural heritage nomination process a complicated interaction arises between expert knowledge and local knowledge, which generates insights that need to be formulated in the final product. Cultural sensitivity and local participation must be pillars in such a project to make it sustainable.

    This study aims to examine the views on digitization of eight respondents, all working at different libraryinstitutions in Sweden, and how their views are reflected in their library's digitization strategies. The poll wasconducted on the basis of Ingrid Mason's theory of information standards, their structure and sociopoliticalnature. The informantion standards are divided into three aspects, curatorial, semantic and technical, and theyaffect selection of, intellectual and physical access to the digitized material, which in the end is what constitutes the digital cultural heritage.The background to the study is that the Swedish library institutions in the current situation lacks a nationalstandard or a common strategy for the digitization of cultural heritage, while it is still implemented digitizationprojects at many library institutions. The method used is qualitative, structured interviews with open-ended questions.The study shows that one of the main motives behind the libraries' digitization projects is to make librarymaterials available in a new way, creating greater opportunities for the users to take advantage of the material.The library users are the ones who mainly control what is digitized, although aspects of preservation ismentioned. Furthermore, it appears that the respondents believe that digitization offers improved capabilities tosearch and learn more about the collections, but the actual work of image capture, the addition of metadata,presentation to users and long-term preservation is very complex.Views on what it is to be digitized, how the material should be selected and provided with metadata and howit should be presented to users is what creates the standards that libraries use when they digitize their materials,and digitization of library materials creates new conditions for new users to access and use library material.This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    The aim of this thesis is to show that the character of orality and literacy as intellectual and physical tools can beused to understand the myth about information technology. This paper is grounded on the notion that differenttechnological innovations affects our ideas about ourselves, the world and even technology itself. These ideas - ofwhich the myth about information technology is but one - can then be understood by focusing the nature of theintellectual and physical tools that mediates the ideas, and in the process, colors them a certain way.Drawing on the theories of Walter J. Ong, orality is examined primarliy in the context of the South AfricanSan through the verbally transmitted cultural artifact known as "The Song of the Broken String". Orality isargued to encourage a collective personality structure that manifests itself as ideas about humanitys close affinitywith animals.Literacy is examined primarily through the romantic movement and Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. It isargued that the concept of social construction - if defined as an ability to question the individuals relation to thecollective and biological essentialism - is related to two characteristics of literacy as intellectual and physicaltool: Individualized personality structures and the tendency to organize knowledge in an abstract and intellctualsphere, that both influence notions about the physical body and materiality.The established characteristics of orality and literacy then come together in the ongian term secondaryorality - ie. to turn inward and outward simultaneously - as a way to describe the modern digital era. Theconclusion is that the myth about information technology, as expressed in John Perry Barlows "The Declarationof the Independence of Cyberspace", tries to harmonize between the individual and the collective that are inthemselves in part caused by said information technology's ability to enhance individual and collectivepersonality structures at the same time.My method is a literary analysis that deploys ongian terms on above mentioned cultural artefacts.This is a two year master's thesis in the field of library and information science.

    This essay is based on the work of arranging and making an inventory for an archive consisting of records from the Board of Education (Utbildningsnämnden) within the administration of the County Council in Uppsala, Sweden. This archive is kept at the County Councils Archives in Uppsala where I have done the work. I have documented the process and discussed the complex of problems relating to it. In this particular case the issue of limitation of the office of origin and the respect of the fonds, or the principle of provenance, have been of interest. This is due to the fact that the records had been rearranged and mixed with records with other origin related to the Board of Education. Records from the early existence of the board have previously been arranged and an inventory had been made. This earlier work covered the period of 1971-1978, when the board of education had a secretariat.

    The aim of the work was to arrange the records of the board during the period of 1979-1997. After this period the board ended being an independent body. With support from theories of respect of fonds my conclusion is that the Board of Education is a coherent office of origin for the fonds during its entire period of existence dur - ing the years 1971-1997. I decided to make the first inventory a part of the new one in order to keep a logical continuity of the records and the inventory. Creating a subordinate archive with its own inventory would make the whole seem badly arranged and complicate the finding of records. Based on the respect of fonds I used the previous inventory to a large extent. The knowledge and understanding I gained thanks to the fact that I was able see the complete fonds made me do some changes. The archive consist of files based on journals to a large ex - tent, which makes a large part of the records easy to find.

    The work in combination with the essay constitutes my one year master’s thesis in archival science.

    This masters thesis is about the educational activities at Göteborg City museum. It is a qualitative analysis of the new plan for the educational work wich has been written by two of the museum teachers at the museum. The educational work in museums has traditionally been based on tacit knowledge and very little has been written about it. This new plan is one step in a development process to a more structured work in this field at museums. The aim is to discuss the new pedagogic and the new type of museum lesson in comparison with the old method and to discuss if the purposes of the newly developed educational plan reaches its goals.

    The questions at issue are:

    - How do they work with museum education at Göteborg City museum?

    - What has the transition to the new teaching plan meant for the museum teachers´ operation?

    - How do they work to satisfy children’s different condition to absorb knowledge at a museum?

    The empirical materials consists of interviews with two museum teachers, a questionnaire to a teacher who booked a lesson at the museum for her pupils and my one observation of the same lesson.

    The main conclusion is that the educational work is characterized by flexibility and dialogue with the pupils. The so-called new plan is not entirely new, the big difference is that it is written down and more structured. The more dialogue-based lession makes the pupil think critically and more actively seek fore knowledge. Because the method is based on dialogue it is the children them self that set the level at the lession. The museum teachers stimulate the pupils different senses so that the individual pupil has a chance to absorb some knowledge in, regardless of what level of cultural capital it has.

    This thesis serves as a guide to the holdings of Leufsta Bruksarkiv, a small archival institution situated at a former ironworks in Lövstabruk on the east coast of Sweden. The holdings stem from a period of advanced iron manufacturing in Sweden, from the mid-17th century to the first decades of the 20th century. The holdings consists foremost of bookkeeping, but we also find documents dealing with judicial matters, maps and blueprints.  

    During the 17th century Lövsta bruk (also Leufsta bruk) became the largest manufacturer of iron in Sweden. Louis de Geer, a Dutch businessman who is sometimes referred to as the father of Swedish industry, was involved in the ironworks already in 1626 and took over the ownership of the facility 1643. He developed a new order in Swedish iron manufacturing by bringing workforces to Lövsta from his native region of Wallonia, today a part of Belgium. Leufsta Bruksarkiv holds records from several ironworks in the region that all have a relation to Lövsta bruk or Gimo bruk – another big facility related to the de Geer family. The relationship between these ironworks is described in the guide.

    The bookkeeping shows a consistency and a richness of detail, providing an insight into the life and labour at the ironworks. The books are also a source for genealogical research and research on estates and villages in the region. Research into the judicial records, amongst which regulations of properties and ownership can be found, may help those who seek to trace the transformation of the area or the history of a specific estate. The historical maps provide a further complement in such matters.

    The guide will provide an aid for visitors and help recognize what information can be drawn out of the records. It also aims to situate the holdings in its historical context by drawing the larger picture of the de Geerian dynasty and the process of iron manufacturing, as well as discussing the vocabulary found in the documents.  

    This is a one year master’s thesis in Archival Science.

    Kulturarvet är alltmer framträdande i våra samhällen oavsett om vi befinner oss i det lugna Hälsingland med dess Hälsingegårdar som världsarv, eller i ett krigshärjat Syrien där unika kulturarv förstörs i konflikten. Samtidigt tycks kulturarvet tillhöra allt och alla och skärskådas utifrån olika perspektiv medförande att det blir till något omtvistat där olika värden gör anspråk på platsen och kräver tolkningsföreträde. Kulturarvet och dess begreppsapparat har blivit till något ambivalent, globalt och lokalt i ständig rörelse.  Hand i hand med denna närvaro ifrågasätts kulturarvsbegreppet och är kanske på väg att fasas ut ur kulturdiskursen för att ersättas med kulturmiljö i mångfald. Det finns en utmaning i detta som kulturarvsforskare bör ta sig an för att bemöta med de djupa kunskaper som finns inom fältet. Artikeln diskuterar denna ambivalens och avslutar med en fallstudie av Terror Haza i Budapest.

    This conceptual paper deals with definitions of and approaches to cultural and natural heritage and discusses functions of heritage and culture as elements of sustainable peace-building. The paper assumes the necessity of a longer-term strategic thinking. A fundamental question occupying heritage research is why some parts of the human Lebensraum are singled out and marked as a cultural heritage and why this need for preserving, protecting and capturing in time and space is escalating globally. Some researchers argue that this is a consequence of that we seem to be living in a fragmented, post, post-modern society where no coherent story is told and people and places are regarded as texts and isolated narratives open for interpretations and re-interpretations. Some others argue that the Drang for heritage is based on economic interests and connected to the booming tourist industry, while others refer to the politicizing of place.

    The conceptual discussion will be exemplified with the ethnographic case of The Museum of Terror/ Terror Haza in Budapest in order to show the complexity of heritage as elements of reconciliation and transition.

    Abstract [en]

    Local participation, beneficiary participation, informed participation, or, folkligt deltagande (peoples’ participation [Swe.] ), are concepts that are highly used and appreciated in development projects as well as in the field of humanitarian action. In the present introductory paper, I will discuss this concept and refer to it as “local participation” or only “participation” for the sake of convenience, although I am very much aware of the refinement of the concept expressed in the different forms of the word as mentioned above. I am not questioning the concept per se, and I will not dwell on the meaning of it. Instead, I am concerned with the outcomes of local participation, that is the knowledge produced and I would like to take this knowledge and merge into a universal (global) knowledge production, with the purpose of getting a way from the associated locality of the concept, which makes it both vulnerable and at the same time powerful.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter discusses the use of the past in the implementation, knowledge production, and evaluation of resettlement projects. It argues that heritage and memories are neglected resources, and necessary analytical elements of the sociocultural dimensions of resettled societies. Sociocultural dimensions are the tangible and intangible resources that constitute everyday routine culture, supported and molded by the social relations, memories, heritage, and emotions that are attached to the landscape and environment. These dimensions are the least studied and the least understood in resettlement. It is further argued that the present resettlement models are insufficient to grasp the longitudinal consequences of resettlement. A consideration of heritage and memory would improve the model. The use of the past from a longitudinal perspective is explored through the ethnography of the Zimapán resettlement project.

    This article is an inquiry into the theoretical and empirical concept of local participation as it used within the field of development-caused forced displacement and resettlement (DFDR). Local participation has repeatedly proved its relevance for mitigating negative impacts caused by DFDR project by involving the people in the process. Paradoxically the people contributing with their very main asset of their culture and livelihood - the land - often end up in chronic poverty despite the use of local participation. It seems that the concept that was developed to protect and support the affected people to overcome poverty at the same time contributes to the undermining of the local culture, which shows signs of “falling-apart from within”. Several questions arise from this: Is it the concept per se that is misleading or misused? Or is it the way the project is constructed, processed and executed with its crucial elements of identified risks and compensations that needs to be reinterpreted and rethought?

    In this article, I will argue, that we have to come to a deeper understanding of what is happening on the ground by focusing on the value domains that are created between the main parties during the negotiations. I see this approach as a way to avoid deadlocks and to avoid viewing the negotiations as an inflexible, hierarchical, one-way relationship between two main parties locked in an asymmetrical power game with no possibility to escape. The Zimapán hydroelectric dam project in Mexico will be used as the ethnographic jumping-off point for discussions.

    This paper aims to contribute to the longitudinal studies of DFDR by presenting ethnographic material from the Zimapán resettlement project in Mexico. The data is analyzed through a lens of anthropological and heritage theories. The role of anthropology in contested projects is also discussed.

    The Setting of Negotiation Agendas in Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    International polices on involuntary resettlement have been developed for the last 30 years following the ground breaking World Bank guidelines from the 1980s.  The World Bank is now reviewing their safeguards on involuntary resettlement presented in The Environmental and Social Safeguards Frame (ESF) (2014).These policies partially set the agenda for the protracted and conflictive on-the ground negotiations between the main stakeholders (lender, client (government or private) and the people to be displaced. In these policies, the participatory model has been in focus in order to empower and strengthening the community engagement. This paper argues that it is not about participation per se, but about negotiations.

    Five Sides of the Same Coin: The Place of Global Policy Frameworks in the Setting of Negotiation Agendas of Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper contributes to the discussion of the role of policy guidelines in involuntary resettlement projects in the light of the World Bank´s revision of its safeguards Environmental and Social Safeguards (2014). The paper concludes that the present and proposed guidelines do not take into consideration the complexity on the ground in these kinds of stressful projects.  The authors have a unique possibility to compare "inside and outside" events and decisions as one of the author was embedded in the local culture while the other one was the assigned resettlement expert of the lenders.

    In spite of repeated efforts of conciliation, the relation between expert and indigenous knowledge remains a deeply ambivalent arena. This ambivalence puts obstacles to a crucial factor in Humanitarian Action - the effective alliances between these as perceived as two different cognitive forms. Coordinated programs should of course proceed from a fundament of established mutual trust, a precondition that often gets bogged down in a muddled discourse on issues such as inspiration from original conservationists, respect of natural harmonies, the precedence of instrumental precision before traditional approximations, not to mention mystifications and delusions.

    For a long time now, the world has been facing a heritage stampede with an array of stakeholders – nations, global heritage organizations, NGOs, terrorists and ordinary people – all claiming their rights to heritage and the past. Hence, there is a great need to understand what heritage does, or what we do with heritage in an everyday context. This article aims to contribute to the discussion through investigation of the heritage concept from a theoretical and analytical perspective, starting from a Swedish and European view on heritage; how it came into being, established itself and developed, and finally found itself called into question and at risk of being discarded. Our argument is that the present heritage concept would benefit from the introduction of the concept of life-values, not in order to replace it, but to enrich and take heritage into the 21st century. The article is based on field workd in Albania.
