    Abstract [en]

    This thesis serves as a guide to the holdings of Leufsta Bruksarkiv, a small archival institution situated at a former ironworks in Lövstabruk on the east coast of Sweden. The holdings stem from a period of advanced iron manufacturing in Sweden, from the mid-17th century to the first decades of the 20th century. The holdings consists foremost of bookkeeping, but we also find documents dealing with judicial matters, maps and blueprints.  

    During the 17th century Lövsta bruk (also Leufsta bruk) became the largest manufacturer of iron in Sweden. Louis de Geer, a Dutch businessman who is sometimes referred to as the father of Swedish industry, was involved in the ironworks already in 1626 and took over the ownership of the facility 1643. He developed a new order in Swedish iron manufacturing by bringing workforces to Lövsta from his native region of Wallonia, today a part of Belgium. Leufsta Bruksarkiv holds records from several ironworks in the region that all have a relation to Lövsta bruk or Gimo bruk – another big facility related to the de Geer family. The relationship between these ironworks is described in the guide.

    The bookkeeping shows a consistency and a richness of detail, providing an insight into the life and labour at the ironworks. The books are also a source for genealogical research and research on estates and villages in the region. Research into the judicial records, amongst which regulations of properties and ownership can be found, may help those who seek to trace the transformation of the area or the history of a specific estate. The historical maps provide a further complement in such matters.

    The guide will provide an aid for visitors and help recognize what information can be drawn out of the records. It also aims to situate the holdings in its historical context by drawing the larger picture of the de Geerian dynasty and the process of iron manufacturing, as well as discussing the vocabulary found in the documents.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter discusses the use of the past in the implementation, knowledge production, and evaluation of resettlement projects. It argues that heritage and memories are neglected resources, and necessary analytical elements of the sociocultural dimensions of resettled societies. Sociocultural dimensions are the tangible and intangible resources that constitute everyday routine culture, supported and molded by the social relations, memories, heritage, and emotions that are attached to the landscape and environment. These dimensions are the least studied and the least understood in resettlement. It is further argued that the present resettlement models are insufficient to grasp the longitudinal consequences of resettlement. A consideration of heritage and memory would improve the model. The use of the past from a longitudinal perspective is explored through the ethnography of the Zimapán resettlement project.

    The Setting of Negotiation Agendas in Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    International polices on involuntary resettlement have been developed for the last 30 years following the ground breaking World Bank guidelines from the 1980s.  The World Bank is now reviewing their safeguards on involuntary resettlement presented in The Environmental and Social Safeguards Frame (ESF) (2014).These policies partially set the agenda for the protracted and conflictive on-the ground negotiations between the main stakeholders (lender, client (government or private) and the people to be displaced. In these policies, the participatory model has been in focus in order to empower and strengthening the community engagement. This paper argues that it is not about participation per se, but about negotiations.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the age-related norms which control the process of making public archives accessible. It focuses on physical access and visitors at the physical archival institutions. More specifically, it examines which groups are not included in the archival institutions’ target groups and why this is the case, the archival employees’ views on visitors’ needs and the archival institutions’ action space regarding the process of making archives accessible.

    The theoretical framework for this thesis is a combination of a norm critical and an intersectional perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at archival institutions. Two different archival institutions have been examined, which are both departments of public authorities.

    The main result of the thesis is that there exist normative systems within the archival institutions which favour elderly people and people within the academic world. Age also matters less for people within the academic world. Accordingly, people outside of these groups can be regarded as non-target groups. Factors which can contribute to exclusion are also non-western origin and to be occupied at daytime. The explanations to why some groups are excluded are lack of resources and knowledge, a reactive approach, and the institutions’ opening hours. Regarding visitors’ needs, many visitors need help searching for material and formulating their needs, which they can also expect to be helped with. Needs which the archival employees can not satisfy are extensive reading of handwriting or carrying out research for the visitor. In general, it seems that people within the archival institutions’ target groups are more likely to get the exact help they need. The archival employees have a relatively great action space when it comes to making archives accessible, as the policy documents don’t mention this activity in detail.

    This memo discusses and problematizes the work of organizing and cataloging the archive of the Environmental Advisory Council.The archive mainly consists of records concerning meetings which the Environmental Advisory Council has participated in, but also records concerning different tasks of the council and a few records concerning the coun-cil itself.The overriding problem, which is discussed in the final part of this memo, is the lacking knowledge about the creator of the archive and the creation of the archive itself and how this effects the work of ordering and catalog-ing.     The aim of this two-year master´s thesis is to examine the opinion on bibliotherapy in Sweden of some potential bibliotherapists. Eight qualitative interviews were made with informants with different occupational backgrounds. Questions asked were: Who can consider working with bibliotherapy and in what way? Which requirements are needed? Which are the benefits from bibliotherapy, according to the informants? What could be the task of the library and the librarians? Theories used were narratology, conversational therapy and the bibliotherapeutic process.

    The study shows that all of the informants consider the bibliotherapeutic conversation to be important. Those who may consider working with interactive bibliotherapy, are mainly those with a background in social work. Most of them wish to cooperate with medical staff or adequate organization. All of the librarians consider themselves to have enough knowledge to be able to find adequate bibliotherapeutic material. What the informants require if they were to work with bibliotherapy, are education, some personal traits, time and space. The task of the library and the librarian could be several, including personal development and problem solving among students, patients and library visitors.

    Abstract [en]

    The archives of religious communities is a sparingly treated subject and christian community archives constitute the majority of the archives studied. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the relevance of James M. O'Toole's four characteristics of religious archives put forward in his article What’s different about religious archives? Another implicit purpose is to expand the knowledge of religious community archives and include archives from other world religions. The thesis's theoretical starting-point is O'Toole's characteristics which are also used as a basis for the questions that the thesis set out to answer. The main question is to what extent O'Toole's characteristics are relevant for studying archives linked to modern religious communities operating in Sweden. The method used is interviews. A total of seven people were interviewed who had knowledge of seven religious community archives. The archives were linked to the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden, the Catholic Bishopric, the Jewish Community in Stockholm, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Triratna Buddhist Community and the Baptist Union of Sweden. With the exception of interviews, the source material consisted of literature (books and articles), web pages, archive registers and email correspondence. The result is that O'Toole's characteristics are not particularly relevant for studying archives linked to modern religious communities operating in Sweden. Religion does not seem so important for religious archives as O'Toole claims. On a scale of 0–5, the relevance of O'Toole's characteristics is 1–2. For this reason, the characteristics need to be modified. There are good opportunities for future researchers to develop the subject and supplement this study. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archival Science.

    Stimulating Engagement and Learning Through Gamified Crowdsourcing: Development and Evaluation of a Digital Platform2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to develop a gamified crowdsourcing platform for transcription and metadata tagging of digitised text documents, and further to examine whether the platform can stimulate engagement in archives and be used as an educational resource. The case, around which the thesis project is conducted, is the governmental Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its historical documents which were damaged in a fire in 2014. 

    Theories about engagement, archival pedagogy, and gamification guided the development of the platform. Bosnian-Herzegovinian school children, History teachers, and staff of the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina tested the platform and shared their thoughts of it in focus group discussions and interviews.

    The developed platform consists of a game interface, a database, and an interface for results viewing and searching. It is web-based, and coded in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. The platform stimulated engagement among the school children who tested it. They expressed interest in reading and learning more about archival documents, in long-term preservation of information, and in the archive’s mission and future. Judging from the discussions and interviews, the platform could well serve as an educational resource. The History teachers showed interest in using the platform in their teaching, and found support for it in the curriculum for the History subject.

    A gamified crowdsourcing platform has been developed, and the perception among school children, History teachers, and archive staff was overall very positive. Crowdsourcing is not just about sourcing out tasks to the crowd. Co-creation of content could furthermore stimulate learning and engagement, and thereby tie a bound between the public and the archive. Gamification can successfully make the overarching goal of crowdsourcing understandable and concrete for the platform users.

    The present study is embedded in the research field of Personal Information Management (PIM) and its goal is to contribute to this research area by showing information management aspects in untraditional contexts, as in the social networking site Twitter. The aim and purpose of this two year's master thesis was to investigate the beha-viour of librarians within the context of Twitter. The objectives of this thesis focus on the query of the informa-tion management aspect of Twitter, and on the investigation into whether Twitter offers the possibility to reach a state of flow while using it, as well as inquiring into the relationship between Mihaly Csikszentmihalyis flow theory and PIM. The theoretical framework of this thesis is centred upon the flow theory and the conditions that are necessary to reach a state of flow. To fulfill the purpose of this thesis a directed content analysis is applied as an investigative method, where its in-depth research aspects will be applied upon the empirical material, which contains 429 tweets. These were collected over a period of one month from 20 people, and divided among 10 women and 10 men who identified themselves as librarians on Twitter. The resulting analysis of the material shows that there is an aspect of information management to Twitter, even though a small facet and appears most-ly with tweets that are related to work issues. The analysis also demonstrates that Twitter fulfills the conditions of flow and thereby it can be concluded that Twitter holds the possibility of a state of flow while it is in use. This illustrates that there is a relationship between PIM and Csikszentmihalyis flow theory. The conclusion is that with the structured information management the possibility for a state of flow to occur rises, while the state of flow itself supports information management by enabling people to successfully retrieve information by remembering that which otherwise may have been forgotten.

    Abstract [en]

    The subject of this master's thesis is how digitisation changes the understanding of textual archival matter. Drawing on document theory and media theory, the concept of digitisation is analysed as remediation, the repro - duction of one medium in another. A key theoretical assumption is that digitisation is not a neutral process, and conceptualising digitisation as remediation is a way of analysing the changed charasteristics of archival matter when represented in another medium. A tentative model for analysing remediated archival matter is presented, identifying three aspects or dimensions as crucial in understanding how remediation affects the interpretation of archival matter: the document dimension, the media dimension and the institutional dimension.

    The source material for this thesis are four instances of digitised archival material, each conceptualised and analysed as a case study. The four case studies are: a digitised archival volume from the archives of Swedish art museum Moderna Museet; the digitised typewritten manuscript of the poem ”De sju dödssynderna” (”The seven deadly sins”) by Swedish author and poet Karin Boye, available on the cultural heritage portal Alvin; a digitised handwritten notebook forming part of the manuscript for the novel To the Lighthouse by English author Virginia Woolf, available on the website Woolf Online; the digitised verdict from Swedish court of justice Kammarrätten (Administrative Court of Appeal) regarding the age rating for the film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part One.

    It is argued that the digitised archival material in each case study has the character of a digital facsimile, whose charasteristics are dependent upon choices made in its production as well as mode of presentation. It is further argued that the characteristics of each digital facsimile shape and mediate the understanding of the archi - val matter, and that some kinds of information, e. g. textual information, are more easily represented than others, e. g. material information.

    In the light of these results, the changing role of the archive and the possibilities of different kinds of rese - arch are discussed. The original value of this master's thesis lies in its further development of the concept of re - mediation as a concept in archival science as well as deepening the understanding of the interpretative fra - meworks surrounding digitised archival matter.

    In the digitalization continuum of art and artefacts, the questions how and through which mediations artistic material ought to be presented are vital ones. This debate is here discussed with two such initiatives, namely the pan-Nordic museum portal DigitaltMuseum and the avant-garde repository UbuWeb. The initiatives are explained in an information scientific context, followed by a discussion of the repositories’ knowledge organization and user perspectives. Technological as well as juridical issues are thereafter brought up in order to illuminate the presentational differences between DigitaltMuseum and UbuWeb respectively. The arts council-funded DigitaltMuseum is viewed as a publication tool for Norwegian and Swedish museums to bring out various artefacts into the public web-sphere. UbuWeb is in turn defined as a rhizomatic guerilla-initiative for ensuring the digital prolonging for avant-garde material. The two repositories are in different ways concluded as significant platforms for the web-based display of digitized artistic objects and concepts.

    Emotions as a mode of understanding: An essay in philosophical aesthetics2001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this investigation is to discuss emotions as a mode of understanding and in what ways emotions can be connected to narrative art. An emotion is a sign that a person has understood a situation in a certain way, an understanding which will also be valid in interacting with different kinds of narrative art. Narrative art, on the other hand, is an unfailing source for depictions of human situations where all kinds of emotions appear. Thus, we understand narratives partly through our emotions, but we also learn to understand emotions through narratives. In this circumstance lies the reason for my claim of an interdependent intertwining of art and human life.

    Part I begins with a discussion of terminological issues, and stipulates a number of concepts and in what sense they will be used. The main problem in this part is to consider emotions as a kind of evaluative judgement which we make at a pre-reflective level. We find the term "pre-reflective" in Sartre's outline for a theory of emotions, which will also be discussed at some length. Although I focus on judgement, evaluation and the object of the emotion in this section, I will emphasise a contextual understanding of emotions in the investigation as a whole.

    Part II establishes the connection between situation-emotion-narrative, a connection which shows that emotions can only be understood through the context in which they occur. The fact that language and culture are significant for emotions is another issue which will be investigated in this part.

    In part III the main focus is the process of understanding which intertwines emotions, imagination and memory. In sympathy we find an understanding of other human beings based on imagination and concern. This is a kind of understanding, considered in terms of knowing-what-it-is-like, which is most valuable in our intersubjective relations and which, in a sense, can be acquired through interaction with narrative art.

    Part IV discusses emotional variations using the object of the emotion as a basis for the discussion. It seems that a fruitful way to gain some insight into the emotional sphere is to analyse the presumed object involved, no matter whether the object is ambiguous or even absent.

    Finally, the last part will concentrate on education and identity within the frame of emotions and narrative. The aim of this part is to explore a more conscious attitude in the encounter with art, where narrative art can be a source for challenging of habits and valuations.

    Abstract [en]

    With the purpose of finding the motives behind use, production and reuse of Open Educational Resources (OER), the writer has conducted a qualitative survey. The three main questions in this two years master‟s thesis are:

    • Why do people use others‟ unmodified OER?

    • Why do people produce OER?

    • Why do people alter and reuse OER?

    The theoretic framework is built around Manuel Castells‟ network society, with its social and efficiency seeking dimension, along with the Knowledge commons. Some pedagogy is included as well.

    A web survey was distributed to 796 users of the Connexions OER repository. 95 responses were received. The results reveal the users, producers and reusers to be a diverse crowd. The belief in sharing knowledge and information is put forth as a motive behind taking part in the OER circuit, as are more practical thoughts about use in teaching or learning situations. Continuing reuse of own material is popular.

    The quality of material and user interfaces are claimed to be barriers against use. The verdict is not un-animous however, and there are possible signs of improvement ahead.

    Furthermore, the community around OER is described with warmth and surprise by several respondents. Among faculty the support for OER is varied, but on the internet the communication and encouragement is glob-al.

    This paper is an account of the inventory I've made of documents in the archive at Museum Gustavianum, Collections storage Husbyborg, relating to the excavations in Asine, Greece, in the 1920s. The aim of this inventory has been to establish which of the documents in the Husbyborg archives that belong to the department of Classical Studies at Uppsala University. Documents belonging to other archives have been found alongside the one mentioned above and those are the Original documentation (loan from Carolina) and the personal archive of Professor Axel W. Persson. The documents have been arranged according to the General Archive Scheme (Allmänna arkivschemat) seeing that the department of Classical Studies already had a series named Documents relating to the departments archeological collections, and the inventory I've made will be incorporated with that. The subject of this one year master's thesis in archival science has been, other than the inventory itself, to describe and examine the difficulties I've encountered during this inventory, which are separation of archives, principle of provenance and photographs.

    The foundation for a museum is the collection. To collect, preserve and display is what constitutes a museum. But the process of deciding which object´s should be saved, and which objects should not, are based on values. It is also values that make people inclined to donate objects to museums. How and why we value a museum determine if and why we donate.

    Objects themselves could be said to have a biography just like people. Depending on the objects biography and the context, the value of the object differs.

    My aim is to try and give an explanation to how we value the material heritage we collect, and to explain why people want to donate to museums; despite the fact they don’t get paid.

    I will also try and explain how value theory is used in economics and in philosophy, and how those value theories might differ from a museological theory of value.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay deals with the founders of Hallwylska museet and Waldemarusdde in Stockholm, who donated their homes as museums to the Swedish state in the first half of the 20th century. The aim of this essay is to compare how Hallwylska museet and Waldemarsudde portray their donors’ museum-making in relation to the intentions of the donors, which can be deducted from their catalogues and the documents validating their donations.

    The catalogues that Wilhelmina von Hallwyl and prince Eugen saw to making give an idea of the approaches they had towards their museum-making. The intentions they gave for their donations can be found in the official documents and testament respectively regarding their donations. To find out how today’s museums portray the donors and their museum-making I have attended two guided tours at each museum and analysed their guidebooks and the texts available in the milieus. With the intentions of the donors as a contextual background I have applied a class and gender perspective on what visitors may learn at the museums. I use these perspectives with a post structural view in mind, seeing society as based on structures formed by the people living within that society. My results show that the two museums have rather different ways of presenting their founders. The guides and guidebooks at Hallwylska museet explain Wilhelmina von Hallwyls place in society as a noble lady grown up in an upper-middle class environment, and they high-light her break with female norms of the time. They portray her as open-minded in her wish to show future visitors her cultural milieu, but the elaborate and scientific catalogue she made and the great amount of work she put into her museum is seen as both admirable and weird. The guides, perhaps unintentionally, portray the extent of her activeness in realising her museum plans as abnormal. In contrast prince Eugen receives no criticism for not seeing to the completion of his collection catalogue, but like Wilhelmina von Hallwyl he receives praise for making his art collection and house available to the public. Prince Eugen is positively contextualised as a royal who broke with tradition in becoming a modern artist. The guides and guidebooks portray him as timeless in his modern tastes, but this gives an impression of him as standing above the society and culture that formed him. Adding to this is the negligence of contextualising the great privileges he held as a man of the royal family. My conclusion is that the guides unintentionally put the two museum founders in different light because of their differences in class and gender. Public museums are educators, and as such it might be in their interest to include a greater amount of social critique and historical context in their history telling. This is a two years master’s thesis in museum and heritage studies.

    Personal archives are a largely neglected subject in archival theory. Among the consequences of this is the absenceof any general established or formalized practices when it comes to arrangement and description. Thisstudy opposes the notion that an archival institution without formal systems of arrangement and description doesnot order and describe archives in accordance with a general conceptual framework of a correct order. Supportingitself on the anthropological theory of Mary Douglas on dirt and cleanliness, it studies the implicit notions oforder that can be found in the archival descriptions of the personal archives kept by the Swedish national archives.Several patterns where revealed by the study: among them the primacy of quantity stood out. The vaguesystem of categories based on Martin Grass description model appears only to be employed loyally where quantitiesof the particular categories are such that they constitute complete volumes, which seem to be the cardinaljustifier of categorical division within the archive. The model itself is rarely applied with orthodoxy, and itsroughness often means that the categories engage in “border clashes” over which documents belong in whichcategory. Though these are often caused and generally determined by quantities, they also reveal an internalhierarchy of relations between specific types of records and categories. Furthermore, certain categories appearsmore stable than others, and when Grass system collapses, it reveals how certain of them – based on a principleof pertinence or theme – habitually fall out of use whereas categories defined by document types appear to remainfar more stable even in smaller archives and archives with low degree of differentiation.

    The purpose of this thesis has been to examine how four public libraries interact with their patrons on Facebook. The thesis strives to investigate which methods of interaction that seems to generate the most positive response from the patrons. Emphases has been placed on how the libraries communicate with their patrons, in terms of language use, update frequency and response to patron comments. The theoretical foundation of this paper has been inspired by Norman Fairclough, and his theories regarding how discourse not only reproduces social and cultural  practices, but also has the power to change them. By becoming aware of the language that we utilise, and what implications it can have, we can make active choices regarding which reality we want to (re)produce.

    Four public libraries in the Stockholm area were selected, and their Facebook pages were studied for five months, between November 2011 and April 2012. Interviews were conducted with one librarian from each library. The interviews showed that the librarians recognised the potential difficulties in finding a balance between the language commonly used in the library community, and the language specific to social media. They were also sensitive to the fact that Facebook-active librarians needed to be able to express themselves rather freely, and use a somewhat more relaxed language than they did in other library-related contexts.

    My findings indicate that a successful Facebook presence is dependent on how much time and effort the library has the possibility to invest, considering that social media requires frequent, varied and engaging updates. The dialogue between libraries and patrons is benefited when the libraries respond to comments and questions as swiftly as possible, ideally within a couple of hours.

    My research suggests that language constitutes a key element when libraries and patrons interact on Facebook. While engaging in what Fairclough refers to as critical awareness of language, libraries can make active choices regarding what level of personality, and what tone of professional expertise, they want to deploy when they address their patrons, and consequently how they want the library to be perceived. This can contribute to regulating the power imbalance between the libraries and their patrons. By signing Facebook posts with their real names, responding swiftly and attentively to the patrons’ comments, and finding a balance between a more conventional library discourse and a more relaxed one, the libraries can consciously strive to alter the image of the library as an anonymous, rather formal, distanced institution.

    Previous research has shown that by collaborating with others and creating partnerships in the local community, the library can become more relevant for both current and potential users. It has also been established that collaboration can be of even greater importance for libraries in multicultural areas. Pooling resources in the community, where the population has largely varied backgrounds, is a way to better meet the diverse needs of the citizen. The aim of this two year master’s thesis, in Library and Information Science, is therefor to explore library branch managers’ view of collaboration between the public library and external partners in the local area. Further, the aim is also to examine whether an intercultural perspective is present or not. To achieve these aims it was necessary to conduct qualitative interviews with branch managers, focusing on three multicultural suburbs of Stockholm, Sweden: Fisksätra, Flemingsberg and Jordbro.

    In line with previous research, the empirical material revealed that although the circumstances are complex, it is of great interest to collaborate with others. The branch managers all stress the importance of cooperating with partners outside the library. However, it was also possible to identify some mixed views in terms of who to collaborate with, and how the collaboration should be performed. By analyzing the differing views it was possible to create three different categories: Category 1: stability - reflection, category 2: security - flexibility and category 3: spontaneity - creativity. In conclusion it can be said, that in order to fully meet the needs and expectations of the community, the library should make the effort to open up their facilities as well as expanding their contact with different partners according to the views expressed by the branch managers. For this to be successful, documentation and precise strategies or guidelines are needed, as well as extensive support from management.

    This study focuses on the Nordic model of Extended Collective Licenses (ECL) and how this model can be used in the process of digitalising and publishing archival material such as photos, letters, maps or films. The question that this study aims to deal with is what advantages, and disadvantages, there are for archives and copyright holders when an ECL is being used. To help answering this question the ‘theory of the knowledge commons’ has been applied. The research question has been answered through a text analysis based on legal texts including Swedish law. To get a wider perspective, international literature such as official and law-binding documents from the Nordic countries and the European Union have also been consulted. Policies and contributions to the debate about making cultural heritage available online have also been included to give light to the complexity of the question.

    In 2013 the Swedish copyright law was changed to facilitate for certain archives and libraries to sign an agreement with a so called Collective Administration Organization (CAO). There are no examples of ECLs being used by Swedish archives for classical archival materials even if the possibility to draw up this type of agreements has existed since 2005. One of the reasons might be the complexity of the law and that the archival institutions have problems of interpreting it. The institutions often avoid providing access to their materials online or choose material they know is in the public domain already. Finding copyright holders before publishing material online is time-consuming. One of the major advantages of functional ECLs is that they save time and resources – both for the archival institutions and the copyright holders. The ECLs provide an opportunity for the archival institutions to share their collections with the public and the copyrights holders get an organized way to communicate their terms and conditions.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to examine the archivist's professional role in public authorities and discuss if, and in what way, the profession is effected by the new swedish process oriented archival description system. The study focuses on swedish authorities and does not make any international comparisons with other institutions. Neither does it investigate archivists workingin the private sector, but centers on public institutions.The survey is performed in five swedish public authorities, using interviews and observations. Grounded theory is used as a method initially in the purpose of keeping an open mark towards the object of study. The initial results led on to questions about how well the archivists perceived that communication within the authorities served, and how this in turn prepossessed their work situation and the professional roles in which they found themselves. To answer these questions, theories from the subjects of sociology and social psychology, among other things the idea of sensemaking as it is put by Karl Weick, was used to analyze the material.The result of the analysis shows that the implementation of a new archival system has generated a change in the archivists work tasks. The archivists in the studied authorities did in some cases, out of this new situation, manage to find a professional role in which they felt comfortable, and in some cases not. The difference between these two categories seemed to stem from a difference in the ability to make sense of their situations in their workplaces respectively. In the cases where the archivists ideas of their responsibilities and provinces did not correlatewith their employers a lack of sensemaking occured and led to confusion and conflict. This discrepancy between the archivists and the employer's expectations, the thesis argues, comes from the change in the archival profession that is taking place due to the changes in society at large. The employers' traditional image of an archivist clashes with the archivists new professional role. From this it is suggested that if consent is not reached around the archivists place in the organizations, and in society, much knowledge is at risk of being lost, and much competence going to waste. This thesis is a two years master's thesis in archival science.

    The aim of the thesis is to examine how archivists work as consultants and how they perceive their professional role.  The research emanates from the notion of resources and how these relate to aspects like environment and roles. The resources that the consultant can use in their work are dependent on which environment they are located in. The resources and the environment in turn effect the archivist’s role and the exertion of their profession.

    The study focuses on three Swedish archivists that are employed at the city archive of Stockholm and work as consultants to businesses of the city. The empirical study is based first on observations and then interviews.

    Grounded theory is used as a method, initially in the purpose of finding a theory that originates from the viewpoint of the informants. The results from this analysis highlight the way the consultants use resources in their everyday work. Theories concerning roles and environment are used to show how the insufficiency or availability of resources effect the roles and work of the consultants, as described here above.

    The result of the analysis show that the consultant’s role changes depending on which environment they are located in and whether or not they have access to certain resources. For example, time can both be an asset and a limitation. When the consultants work in an environment for a short period of time, their role are seen as an expert and they also advance in the hierarchy of the customer’s company. Simultaneously, the shortage of time can also pressure the consultant to make a less sufficient job. This in turn effects the role that the consultants have within their own establishment, in this case the city archive. Because of the shortage of time the consultants are, occasionally, instead seen as “sloppy” or not even considered to be real archivists. 

    The study also shows that the role as a consultant might enable the archivist to better market their knowledge and become a more significant part of companies’ and businesses’ everyday work, and furthermore that additional research is needed.

    The main purpose of this thesis is to gain insight to, and widened knowledge about, the contemporary nationalistic movement in Sweden, represented by the Sweden Democrats, and its’ relation to cultural heritage. The party has made cultural heritage the main focal of their culture politic, but the questions are what cultural heritage is to them, what content they read in to the concept, how they value heritage, what sort of heritage policies they want to pursue, and why. And also what sort of sources and expertise that are invoked by the party. The source material, consisting of transcripts from parliamentary debates, motions, and policy documents from the party’s web page, is processed through a discourse analytic method. An important theoretical starting point is that to define a term is to define the thing itself, and that this is an expression of power, especially when it comes to a parliamentary party.

    The second purpose is to problematize and discuss the concept of heritage on a meta level by comparing the results from the empirical study with earlier research that explores the hegemonic heritage discourse.

    The main findings are that the Sweden Democrats, like many of their peers around Europe, want to use cultural heritage to create unity and a common national identity – a mono culture to replace the multi cultural paradigm they mean is prevailing in the country (and ruining it). The party has an essentialist, even positivistic, view on the content of heritage, but they never really define it thoroughly.

    The study also shows that most of the party’s thoughts on heritage are in line with the hegemonic heritage discourse. Some have argued that the Sweden Democrats are abusing ”the heritage”, but I would rather say that they are using it, in a way that corresponds well with the concept “cultural heritage” as it has been defined by all those involved with it (i.e. journalists, writers, scholars, policy makers, museal personnel, and the public through public debate in the press). The example of this Swedish nationalistic party, shows what the cultural heritage concept of today can be when driven to its peak.

    Abstract [en]

    An ethnographic observational study of storytelling for children in Swedish public libraries explored participants’ interactions with each other and with other artifacts used in storytelling. Findings suggest that librarians interact with children by asking rhetorical questions, but the use of reflective questions is rarer. Results show that librarians and educators limit children’s participation but children express resistance to activities. Storytime sessions are organized around the spoken and written story, although children show the greatest interest in pictures and artifacts. Interactions between participants and different materials are complex and storytelling practices today are affected by the historical and institutional practices of yesterday.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction. This paper reports an empirical study on Swedish children’s librarians’ shaping of professional identity, as it emerges from the participants’ statements about their work with storytime activities and the competences required. Method. The empirical material consists of a transcript from one focus group interview with eight children’s librarians. Analysis. A discursively oriented text analysis was conducted. The transcript was initially examined in terms of the explicit contents of the participants’ statements. It was then interpreted further with an analytical focus on the concepts of professional identity and key narratives. Results. The analysis indicates both shared and conflicting ideas concerning work methods and competencies that define and legitimise librarians’ storytime sessions. In discussing competences, the librarians’ point out inter-professional relations, especially to teachers, as important aspects of identity shaping. A key narrative unfolds, with the library presented as an enclosed, magical space. Conclusions. Storytime is a debated object of professional expertise. There is a lack of a specialist terminology for storytime activities, which may counteract the professional knowledge claims of this female-intensive group. The professional identity of children’s librarians appears multifaceted and somewhat vague and thus calls for further investigation.

    Abstract [en]

    This PM recounts the arrangement of 20 shelf meters worth of records from the harbor management company of Gävle, Gävle Hamn AB, to the municipality archive of Gävle. The records belonged to four separate archives. First, the municipal Gävle harbor management, which already was represented in the municipal archives. Second, Gävle Hamn AB, a company created from the harbor management organization in 2001. The third archive was Gävle Lagerhus AB, another municipal-owned company started in 1971, which took care of the various buildings in the harbor, and merged with Gävle Hamn AB in 2009. Finally there was AB Bergrummet, a company created in 1976 by a group of other companies to oversee an oil storing facility built by Gävle Lagerhus AB, to be used by those companies. AB Bergrummet merged with Gävle Lagerhus AB in 1987.

    This project has involved sorting out the records to decide what belongs to which archive, as well as ap-praising which records can be put aside to be destroyed at a later date. In the case of the harbor management, since the archive already existed, records were simply added to the already existing series, though in some cases new series had to be created. For the other three archives, wholly new archive descriptions were created.

    Abstract [en]

    The main focal point of this study is about public libraries and its possible roles in today's society. Going from having had a clear educational orientation, public libraries has with time amassed several other roles, which all need to relate to the swedish law regarding libraries and other governing documents, as well as business plans. This thesis focus on a qualitative investigation, which was conducted through in-depth interviews with librarians and other staff at a public library in Stockholm, named bibliotek Plattan, to ascertain the prevailing opinions within this facility about the role of libraries and librarians. The choice of examine this particular library was based on the fact that bibliotek Plattan differs from the public library in general and only offers material for adults. Their collection of litterature is primarily based on fiction novels. As theoretical framework and analytical tool for this study a model of Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen is used to analyse what the library can be. The model consists of four spaces: the inspiration space, the learning space, the meeting space, and the performative space. The results show that bibliotek Plattan has characteristics of all four space, though the characterisation library as inspiration space is the strongest influence. Other discoveries which were made showed that the informants wanted to a certain degree to return to a traditional role for libraries with reading and silence as the main elements, and the general view was that in the context of libraries, using the term meeting place was generally seen as negative, as well as that it can be problematic to be a specialised library as there are manyvying ideas and concepts of what a library is and should be. This is a two year's master thesis.

    Abstract [en]

    The investigation analyzed the implementation and application of the Swedish National Archives' new Process-Oriented Archives Description Model to activities of the hierarchical, function-oriented and decentralized university organizations.

    The basic reason why a new archive description has evolved is because documents are becoming more and more digital. It requires a new interpretation of how evidence is secured for their reliability and authenticity, and a new way of looking at provenance, for the purpose of describing and searching electronic documents. The new archive description model's logical structure is based on business processes.

    The relationship between the new archive description and a function-oriented organization's activities can be seen from the different outlooks of processes between archive activities and activities of the organization. It is also reflected in the modification that all universities have made ​​of the new archive description model to be more flexible and pragmatic to fit a function-oriented organization.

    The relationship between provenance and process-oriented archive description is mainly the link between documents and business processes that produce them. For that reason, provenance with greater clarity fulfills the Archives Act and the Freedom of the Press Act. But provenance is often undermined by the identification and mapping of processes and by the classification of documents.

    A consequence for the introduction of process-oriented archive description is that both archival description and the role of the archivist have been recognized of a higher importance in the organization today. There are also other types of records and information issues that have been identified and considered.

    This is a two years master’s thesis in Archival Science.

    This examination paper is an account for the author’s work to arrange and registrate the business archive and business records of court jeweller W. A. Bolin AB from 1916 until present day, and a part of the one-year Masters Programme in Archival Science at the University of Uppsala. Problems that have been encountered are treated, as well as motivations of the decisions made during the process. The author also discusses the lack of literature on the subject of business records and business archives.

    Abstract [en]

    The model of the ecology of information work (Huvila, 2006, 2009) describes the relation of knowledge organisation systems, or in broader sense, the relation of information infrastructures and human information work. The present paper discusses the social aspects of information work and their impact on the interplay of information infrastructures and hu- man activity. The theoretical underpinnings of the discussion build on the ecological approach of Gibson, infrastructural theory and social informa- tion theory. The concluding remarks summarise a reading of the earlier model that places a specific emphasis on foregrounding the social pro- cesses relating to the emergence of information infrastructures and their related information work patterns.
