    Abstract [en]

    In this large-scale contribution, we deal with the relationship between properties of cited references of Web of Science articles and the field normalized citation rate of these articles. Using nearly 1 million articles, and three classification systems with different levels of granularity, we study the effects of number of cited references, share of references covered by Web of Science, mean age of references and mean citation rate of references on field normalized citation rate. To expose the relationship between the predictor variables and the response variable, we use quantile regression. We found that a higher number of references, a higher share of references to publications within Web of Science and references to more recent publications correlate with citation impact. A correlation was observed even when normalization was done with a finely grained classification system. The predictor variables affected citation impact to a larger extent at higher quantile levels. Regarding the relative importance of the predictor variables, citation impact of the cited references was in general the least important variable. Number of cited references carried most of the importance for both low and medium quantile levels, but this importance was lessened at the highest considered level.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper studies the production of dissertations in eight research fields in the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. In using doctoral dissertations it builds on De Solla Prices seminal study which used PhD dissertations as one of several indicators of scientific growth (Price, Little science, big science, 1963). Data from the ProQuest: Dissertations and Theses database covering the years 1950-2007 are used to depict historical trends, and the Gompertz function was used for analysing the data. A decline in the growth of dissertations can be seen in all fields in the mid-eighties and several fields show only a modest growth during the entire period. The growth profiles of specific disciplines could not be explained by traditional dichotomies such as pure/applied or soft/hard, but rather it seems that the age of the discipline appears to be an important factor. Thus, it is obvious that the growth of dissertations must be explained using several factors emerging both inside and outside academia. Consequently, we propose that the output of dissertations can be used as an indicator of growth, especially in fields like the humanities, where journal or article counts are less applicable.

    Abstract [en]

    In Spring 2008 Sebastiano del Piombo (1485-1547) was dedicated an exhibition in Rome, where he was introduced from Venice by the banker Agostino Chigi in Villa Farnesina 1511. The painting L´uomo in armi (1511-1512) was the poster for the exhibition and most probably a self-portrait. It is similar to the unidentified portrait Testa di giovane by Peruzzi in grisaille in the Villa Farnesina. With a queer perspective it proposes Sebastiano del Piombo as a lover of Agostino Chigi parallell with the young spouse Francesca Ordeaschi portrayed as Dorotea (1511-1512). After the death of Rafael in 1520 Sebastiano del Piombo was considered the most skilful painter in Rome. His many majestic homoerotic portraits with virtù correspond to the results of Guido Ruggiero in Machiavelli in love, sex, self and society in he Italian Renaissance (2007) about sexual identities and selfrepresentation in different consensusrealities. Ruggiero is inspired by Foucault and discusses masculinity rereading private letters by the Florentine politician Niccolò Machiavelli and contemporary literature. The exhibition of Sebastiano del Piombo was esthetically impressive but did not answer questions from a modern visitor. The catalogue is imposing but fatally prim avoiding the sex, self and society in Renaissance Rome and Venice so obvious in the art of Sebastaino del Piombo.

    Portals of beauty

    The county of Hälsingland is well-known for its large, red-painted farms decorated with impressing porches. In Forsa though, there are white doors typical for this parish. They are decorated with ornaments like flowers, fabulous beasts and biblical inscriptions. The aim of this essay is to compare doors created by the carpenters in Forsa Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust with the portals by the artist Pehr Westman in the parish of Hemsö, Ångermanland, at the beginning of the 19th century. The carpenters are studied in their social, economical, cultural and architectural context. Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust developed characteristic mixtures of rococo, Swedish Classicism, empire for decoration of doors, portals, interiors, and furniture. They belonged to a social category called outsiders who were not farmers but often farm-hands, tenement soldiers and craftsmen. Their work can be studied as artistic interpretations of the local mentality, its normsystem, style-codex. The portals of Pehr Westman in Hemsö, Ångermanland, are considered as independent works by a self-conscious talented artist who did not follow a local aesthetic system. Westman was a farmer himself, but delivered artistically expressiv Gustavian portals to local farmers, mansions, burghers in nearest town Härnösand, and Stockholm, where he also had his education. Pehr Westman introduced the Swedish Classicism in Ångermanland. His local cultural knowledge and the style of the regional rural architecture facilitated his introducation of a new style. Storsnickare in Norrland were stylists in independent pre-industrial communities aware of new fashion styles, and of the different tastes in other parishes and nearest town. The craftsman who was at the one with the aesthetics of the parishioners and could add some innovation, was the most sought after, in Hälsingland as well as Ångermanland.

    This article presents the photographers Mathilda Ranch (1860-1938) in the town of Varberg in the south of Sweden and Agnes Andersson (1865-1958) in the parish of Alfta in north of Sweden. In their lifetime Sweden was changing into the industrial era introducing new professions beyond gender connotations. Individuals desiring independence found new lifestyles. Ranch and Andersson both lived in their own houses and never married. As photographers they lived in a modern zone where they could reject a compulsory heteronormative partnership. In Varberg, people said that Mathilda Ranch did not like men, due to her inferior social position as an unmarried woman. In Alfta, there was a silence concerning the familylife of Agnes Andersson although her "foster daughter" took over the atelier. Agnes Andersson is an appreciated photographer and parishoner, but as "Mathilda" in Varberg often intimately diminished as "Agnes" and far from fame outside Alfta. Why is Agnes Andersson held back?

    The Villa Farnesina in Trastevere in Rome, built 1506-1511 for the rich banker Agostino Chigi from Siena is a Sienese Renaissance-villa in which noble and harmonious architecture and pictorial decoration fuse into a synthesis. The sober volumetric and spatial articulation of the Villa, devised by the architect, painter and theatrical designer Baldassare Peruzzi from Siena, is a perfect setting for the rich decorative programme of the interior frescoed by great masters as Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Peruzzi himself and Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, known as Sodoma. Villa Farnesina was built as a permanent and representative habitation for Chigi and his young spouse Francesca Ordeaschi whom he married in 1519, framed by frescoes with evident allusions to the glory of the banker, the ancient world, eroticism and love. The bedchamber that was to receive the spouses was the most intimate room in the Villa. Chigi wanted to allude to its function and commissioned the decoration from Bazzi, whose nickname derived from his habits. Beneath a magnificent coffered ceiling with erotic motifs he decorated the walls with a fresco cycle showing the wedding of Alexander the Great and his bride Roxana. The centerpiece of the narrative is the scene of the imminent consummation of the marriage, assisted by two men who are Alexander´s lover and the god of marriage. The decoration programme of Villa Farnesina reveals sexual norms, values and conventions, which can also be seen in the context of Sodoma´s work in Siena, where he married and settled down after leaving his commitment Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican to Raphael. Influenced by Raphael and Michelangelo he successfully introduced la maniera moderna from Rome, including a spectacular personal lifestyle. Sodoma´s work is characterized by a striking sensual homoerotic charisma. In the Sienese frescocycles in Abbazia Monte Oliveto Maggiore, Oratorio di San Bernardino, the church of San Domenico women as well as men are flirting with each other. He had committments in prestigious environments as Palazzo Comunale, the Cathedral, Santa Maria della Scala, palaces and churches all over the republic of Siena. The organization of sexuality in his home-town seem to have given Sodoma a more solid artistic and social reputation than among art historians of the 20th century. Art history is a prim bourgeois discipline, which except for some Renaissance-experts in the 19th century focusing on the Florentine Renaissance has marginalized this Sienese eminent notorious Renaissance-artist. A queer, ethnological and historical reading of Villa Farnesina in Rome and initial impression of the sexual context of Sodoma´s work in the republic of Siena of the 16th century indicates a considerable appreciation of his homoerotic work as well as his personal image. Above all it reveals a flagrant heteronormativity and its mechanisms in the discipline of Art History in the 20th century, marginalized by Sodoma in Villa Farnesina.

    Information science has often been recognized as an interdisciplinary field. The marriage between librarianship/documentation and computer science was a natural development in the United States in the post-War period (Farkas-Conn, 1991; Hahn & Barlow, 2012), while the development of information science in Europe has largely stayed close to the humanities and the social sciences, in particular, in relation to communication and media (Ibekwe-SanJuan, et al., 2010). For many years, the interdisciplinary nature of information science has been applauded; until recently, we are warned that interdisciplinarinity may be harmful to the identity of the field. Buckland (2012) states that the claim of being "interdisciplinary" is to choose a position of weakness because "in times of economic crisis political power tends to reside in well-established disciplines." Cronin (2012) comments that "the field’s sense of identity, arguably fragile at the best of times, is likely to be further weakened" for its "epistemic promiscuity."

    Kulturarvet är alltmer framträdande i våra samhällen oavsett om vi befinner oss i det lugna Hälsingland med dess Hälsingegårdar som världsarv, eller i ett krigshärjat Syrien där unika kulturarv förstörs i konflikten. Samtidigt tycks kulturarvet tillhöra allt och alla och skärskådas utifrån olika perspektiv medförande att det blir till något omtvistat där olika värden gör anspråk på platsen och kräver tolkningsföreträde. Kulturarvet och dess begreppsapparat har blivit till något ambivalent, globalt och lokalt i ständig rörelse.  Hand i hand med denna närvaro ifrågasätts kulturarvsbegreppet och är kanske på väg att fasas ut ur kulturdiskursen för att ersättas med kulturmiljö i mångfald. Det finns en utmaning i detta som kulturarvsforskare bör ta sig an för att bemöta med de djupa kunskaper som finns inom fältet. Artikeln diskuterar denna ambivalens och avslutar med en fallstudie av Terror Haza i Budapest.

    This conceptual paper deals with definitions of and approaches to cultural and natural heritage and discusses functions of heritage and culture as elements of sustainable peace-building. The paper assumes the necessity of a longer-term strategic thinking. A fundamental question occupying heritage research is why some parts of the human Lebensraum are singled out and marked as a cultural heritage and why this need for preserving, protecting and capturing in time and space is escalating globally. Some researchers argue that this is a consequence of that we seem to be living in a fragmented, post, post-modern society where no coherent story is told and people and places are regarded as texts and isolated narratives open for interpretations and re-interpretations. Some others argue that the Drang for heritage is based on economic interests and connected to the booming tourist industry, while others refer to the politicizing of place.

    The conceptual discussion will be exemplified with the ethnographic case of The Museum of Terror/ Terror Haza in Budapest in order to show the complexity of heritage as elements of reconciliation and transition.

    This chapter discusses the use of the past in the implementation, knowledge production, and evaluation of resettlement projects. It argues that heritage and memories are neglected resources, and necessary analytical elements of the sociocultural dimensions of resettled societies. Sociocultural dimensions are the tangible and intangible resources that constitute everyday routine culture, supported and molded by the social relations, memories, heritage, and emotions that are attached to the landscape and environment. These dimensions are the least studied and the least understood in resettlement. It is further argued that the present resettlement models are insufficient to grasp the longitudinal consequences of resettlement. A consideration of heritage and memory would improve the model. The use of the past from a longitudinal perspective is explored through the ethnography of the Zimapán resettlement project.

    This article is an inquiry into the theoretical and empirical concept of local participation as it used within the field of development-caused forced displacement and resettlement (DFDR). Local participation has repeatedly proved its relevance for mitigating negative impacts caused by DFDR project by involving the people in the process. Paradoxically the people contributing with their very main asset of their culture and livelihood - the land - often end up in chronic poverty despite the use of local participation. It seems that the concept that was developed to protect and support the affected people to overcome poverty at the same time contributes to the undermining of the local culture, which shows signs of “falling-apart from within”. Several questions arise from this: Is it the concept per se that is misleading or misused? Or is it the way the project is constructed, processed and executed with its crucial elements of identified risks and compensations that needs to be reinterpreted and rethought?

    In this article, I will argue, that we have to come to a deeper understanding of what is happening on the ground by focusing on the value domains that are created between the main parties during the negotiations. I see this approach as a way to avoid deadlocks and to avoid viewing the negotiations as an inflexible, hierarchical, one-way relationship between two main parties locked in an asymmetrical power game with no possibility to escape. The Zimapán hydroelectric dam project in Mexico will be used as the ethnographic jumping-off point for discussions.

    Five Sides of the Same Coin: The Place of Global Policy Frameworks in the Setting of Negotiation Agendas of Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper contributes to the discussion of the role of policy guidelines in involuntary resettlement projects in the light of the World Bank´s revision of its safeguards Environmental and Social Safeguards (2014). The paper concludes that the present and proposed guidelines do not take into consideration the complexity on the ground in these kinds of stressful projects.  The authors have a unique possibility to compare "inside and outside" events and decisions as one of the author was embedded in the local culture while the other one was the assigned resettlement expert of the lenders.

    In spite of repeated efforts of conciliation, the relation between expert and indigenous knowledge remains a deeply ambivalent arena. This ambivalence puts obstacles to a crucial factor in Humanitarian Action - the effective alliances between these as perceived as two different cognitive forms. Coordinated programs should of course proceed from a fundament of established mutual trust, a precondition that often gets bogged down in a muddled discourse on issues such as inspiration from original conservationists, respect of natural harmonies, the precedence of instrumental precision before traditional approximations, not to mention mystifications and delusions.

    For a long time now, the world has been facing a heritage stampede with an array of stakeholders – nations, global heritage organizations, NGOs, terrorists and ordinary people – all claiming their rights to heritage and the past. Hence, there is a great need to understand what heritage does, or what we do with heritage in an everyday context. This article aims to contribute to the discussion through investigation of the heritage concept from a theoretical and analytical perspective, starting from a Swedish and European view on heritage; how it came into being, established itself and developed, and finally found itself called into question and at risk of being discarded. Our argument is that the present heritage concept would benefit from the introduction of the concept of life-values, not in order to replace it, but to enrich and take heritage into the 21st century. The article is based on field workd in Albania.

    Using a small body of empirical data concerning the types of information students

    handle, this paper inquires into the problematic of knowledge creation, artifacts of

    knowledge, and the possible role of examination as a negative factor in students’ reflective

    achievements. Habermas’ theory of communicative action is proposed as the theoretical

    framework for analyzing the educational environment seen as a lifeworld. From the observed

    fact that types of information students themselves produce (papers, essays, lecture notes,

    master theses, etc.) are hardly mentioned as information they say they handle, the tentative

    conclusion is drawn that these missing types are systematically excluded. The theoretical

    framework provides an explanation for this state of affairs. The overall goal of higher

    education is to increase knowledge in a particular field. In teaching, however, this goal is

    dealt with in a training manner, clearly manifest in the examination process. Therefore, the

    action orientations of the students will differ more or less from the overall goal. Claims of

    validity connected with knowledge turn in a normative direction in action situations oriented

    towards examination. Since information is the link anchoring claims of validity, students

    become inclined to exclude the artifacts of their own knowledge creation. The latter are not

    viewed as dealing with information linking the claims connected with the overall goal of

    increasing ‘real’ knowledge, instead being taken as constituting the links for normative

    claims. The paper also proposes certain means in line with the theory for improving this state

    of affairs.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper proposes a concept of information defined as semantic links to a meaning external to the information, located in the structure of the lifeworld. In building upon Habermas Theory of Communicative Action, the progress of linguistically coordinated action in the lifeworld through speech acts connected with claims of validity is briefly described. The claim is put for ward that the meaning of a statement or an artefact can only be determined through communicative action since all information is semantically contex tualized in the lifeworld, the basic structure of society within which the repro duction of world views and cultural traditions occurs. However, communicative rationality shapes social institutions into a system of growing complexity that exerts pressure on the lifeworld, increasing the need for communicative action. The function of facilitating the evaluation of validity claims makes access to information necessary for consensus formation and action coordination, thereby emphasizing the significance of IS. The paper presents a model of contextualized praxis as it concludes that information specialists must act communicatively.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore and explicate documentation ideals parallel to information policy, and by means of this analysis demonstrate how the concept “documentation ideals” is an analytical tool for engaging with political and institutional contexts of information practices.

    Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a case study of documentation ideals in a debate about quality in archaeological documentation. The methodology draws on idea analysis, and on the science and technology studies’ controversy studies approach.

    Findings – The paper explicates three documentation ideals, how these ideals allocate responsibility for documentation to different actors, how the ideals assign roles to practitioners, and how the ideals point to different beneficiaries of the documentation. Furthermore, the analysis highlights ideas about two different means to reach the documentation ideals.

    Research limitations/implications – The case’s debate reflects opinions of Northern European professionals.

    Social implications – The paper illuminates how documentation ideals tweak and even contest formal information policy in claims on the documentation and on the practitioners doing documentation.

    Originality/value – Documentation ideal analysis is crucial as a complement to formal information policy analysis and to analysis guided by practice theory in attempts to understand the contexts of information practices and documentation, insights central for developing information literacies.

    Purpose

    This study aims at nuancing the perception about professional documentation (a.k.a. ‘grey literature’), assuming perception of documentation being a cultural aspect of accessibility.

    Design/methodology/approach

    The study explores variations within the archaeological report genre through a bibliometric analysis of source use. Source characteristics are explored as well as correlations between report authors and source originators. Statistical frequency distribution is complemented by a correspondence analysis and a k-Means cluster analysis to explore patterns. The patterns are interpreted as ‘frames of references’ and related to circumstances for archaeological work. The study also discusses source representations.

    Findings

    The source use patterns reveal a latent variation, not visible in the general analysis: a professional/academic frame of reference (mainly among authors affiliated with incorporated businesses and sole proprietorships) and an administrative frame of reference (mainly among authors affiliated with government agencies, foundations and member associations) emerge.

    Research limitations/implications

    The study focuses on Swedish field evaluation reports. Future research could 1) test the results in relation to other types of reports, and 2) go beyond the document perspective to explore source use in documentation practices.

    Social implications

    The results on variations in frames of references among report writers have implication for report readers and user. The results should also be considered in archaeology management and policy-making. On the level of source representation the results call for clarifications of vague representations and possibly omitted sources.

    Originality/value

    This study contextualises archaeological information use and focuses on variations in professional archaeology which has received little previous research attention. The bibliometric approach complements previous qualitative studies of archaeological information.

    The aim of this article is to demonstrate how documentation analysis with a neo-documentalist lens can help us explore variations (and stabilities) in conceptions and materialities of documents, as intertwined with disciplinary and sub-disciplinary practices of informing and knowing. Drawing on documentation theory, and with previous research on archaeological documentation as a background, by means of autoethnographic vignettes we explore contemporary conceptions of documentation in five areas in or related to archaeology (Intra-site 3D documentation, Development-led archaeology, Aggregating documentation for use outside the organization, Mediating documentation – or documentation mediation, and Documenting and displaying archaeology in a changing environment). Digitization, and how digitization has spurred renegotiations of what counts as documentation, functions as a common denominator discussed in all of the vignettes. The analysis highlights simultaneously ongoing renegotiations of documentation serving each area’s unique epistemic purposes, and pushing document materialities in different directions. This operationalization of documentation analysis creates an understanding for intra-disciplinary variations in documentation but is importantly also a practical tool to uncover documentation-related premises of disciplinary knowledge-making. This tool can be applied for example in processes of information policy development (regulating what purposes documentation should serve, and what it should be like), information systems design (e.g. for creation and communication of documentation), and infrastructure development (e.g. for preservation and accessibility of documentation).

    The introduction of digital data capturing and management technologies has transformed information practices in archaeology. Digital documentation and digital infrastructures are integrated in archaeologists' daily work now more than ever. International and national institutions and projects have contributed to the development of digital archiving and curation practices. Because knowledge production in archaeology depends heavily on documentation and information dissemination, and on retrieval of past documentation, the question of how information is managed is profoundly intertwined with the possibilities for knowledge production. Regulations at different levels articulate demands and expectations from the emerging digital information practices, but how are these different regulations coordinated, and do they support archaeological knowledge production?

    In this article we look into the state of information policy - the sum of principles guiding decisions about information - in archaeology and related areas. The aim of the article is to shed light on how information policy directs practice in archaeology, and to show that analysis of such policies is therefore vital. Information policy in legislation and guidelines in Swedish archaeology serves as a case study, and examples from development-led archaeology and the museum sector illustrate how information policies have varied roles across different heritage sectors. There are historical and local trajectories in the policy documents specific to Sweden, but the discussion shows that the emergence of Swedish policies have many parallels with processes in other countries. The article provides recommendations for information policy development for archaeology and related areas.

    By analysing the regulating mechanisms of state subsidies to Swedish institutions generally considered mediating “popular education” during the twentieth century, it is argued that a tension has been developed between two parallel notions of popular education. A narrower ideal popular education—emphasising non-formality and independence—has been discursively nurtured along with a broader organisational popular education, denoting the de facto institutions that have received government funding, primarily the folk high schools and study associations. It is argued that the organisational popular education is a reality in itself, spanning over border zones between, for example, non-formal and formal education. Furthermore, an argu- ment against using “popular education” as an analytical concept is put forth, since it is overly contested. Rather, it is promoted as a discursive construct that has for- med real organisational structures with their own logic, which cannot be denoted by words such as non-formal adult education.

    The Capitalist State and the Construction of Civil Society: Public Funding and the Regulation of Popular Education in Sweden, 1870–19912017Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This book challenges the idea that a sharp boundary should be drawn between the state and civil society. Although this idea is extremely common in modern capitalist societies, here it is turned on its head through a study of the ways in which public funding from the 1870s to the 1990s has enabled and shaped collective action in Swedish popular education. Popular education has generally been seen as independent of government control, with strong connections to popular and labour movements; in this volume, Berg and Edquist narrate a new story of its rise by analysing how a government grant system was constructed to drive its development. A key element in this government policy was to create and protect popular education as an autonomous phenomenon, yet making it perform state functions by regulating its bureaucratic make-up and ideological content. The book will appeal to scholars and students of history, education, and sociology, particularly those with an interest in the workings of the capitalist state as well as the history of education.

    Abstract [en]

    In the digitalization continuum of art and artefacts, the questions how and through which mediations artistic material ought to be presented are vital ones. This debate is here discussed with two such initiatives, namely the pan-Nordic museum portal DigitaltMuseum and the avant-garde repository UbuWeb. The initiatives are explained in an information scientific context, followed by a discussion of the repositories’ knowledge organization and user perspectives. Technological as well as juridical issues are thereafter brought up in order to illuminate the presentational differences between DigitaltMuseum and UbuWeb respectively. The arts council-funded DigitaltMuseum is viewed as a publication tool for Norwegian and Swedish museums to bring out various artefacts into the public web-sphere. UbuWeb is in turn defined as a rhizomatic guerilla-initiative for ensuring the digital prolonging for avant-garde material. The two repositories are in different ways concluded as significant platforms for the web-based display of digitized artistic objects and concepts.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a netnographic analysis of information needs and practices related to the shadow library AAARG. AAARG is regarded as a portal and community for the sharing and distribution of academic and artistic texts, books and articles. The portal in question is defined as an actor within the guerrilla open access movement, a radical node within the larger open access movement, which is analysed as a cultural field using the theoretical framework of Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. AAARG is thereafter discussed in an information-practical sense with re- gards to social interaction between individual users’ needs as well as discursive and constructional origins of such needs. These needs and the practices they create are then examined with regards to the order that the platform itself creates, tied to the cultural field which it is a part of. The conclusion is that alternative knowledge organizational platforms such as AAARG have had and will continue to have a big influence on the discussion of today’s open access models, since they clearly fill a certain demand. The discrepancy between such initiatives and institutional open access activities will therefore need further analysis in a library and information scientific context.

    Older peoples usage of mobile devices is increasing. This study is part of the GASEL project and seeks to increase the understanding of the use of mobile information technology and opinions towards it. Opinions are compared between genders and age groups. The population based data were collected by conducting a questionnaire survey. A random sample of 1,500 adults 65 years of age or older was obtained from the Finnish Population Register Centre. The number of respondents was 918 with a response rate of 61.2 %. About one fifth (n=169) had used a tablet computer and approximately one third (n=226) had used a mobile phone with a touch screen in the past 12 months without encountering major difficulties. The respondents had mostly thought that using the devices would not be easy. They had also thought that the usage would not be too expensive for them. Men and younger old people held more positive opinions towards these new technologies. Older people are slower in adapting and accepting new technologies and this should be taken into account when designing services, applications and content, as these technologies have the potential to enrichen the lives of this specific population group.

    The paper presents a study that examines older Finnish adults? self-perceived capability to access, evaluate, understand and use health-related information, and their perceived ability to influence their health themselves, and the relationship between these factors and their current health, health behaviour and information seeking. Questionnaires were mailed by post to 1000 Finns aged 65?79 years, and a total of 281 completed questionnaires (28%) were returned. Of these, 273 were included in the study. Cross-tabulation and chi-square tests were used for the analysis. Results showed that both a stronger belief in one?s capability to master health information and to act in a healthy manner were positively linked to better health and health behaviour as well as more active information behaviour. These beliefs can be important factors for influencing certain health behaviours and even behaviour change.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The paper proposes a model aiming at the explanation of the formation of coordinative knowledge practices in distributed work. Findings from a pilot study aiming at the preliminary testing of the model are presented and discussed.

    Design/methodology/approach - The explanatory model was developed by combining concepts and findings developed in studies of social capital, knowledge sharing and computer supported cooperative work. The empirical data were gathered in 2007-2008 in a multi-unit Finnish chemical company production site. The methods used were structured observation of work processes, semi-structured interviews and a web-based questionnaire.

    Findings - The model suggested that coordinative knowledge practices are shaped by four major factors: work coupling, social capital, spatio-temporality and affordances of collaboration technologies. The empirical study showed that these concepts can be successfully applied in empirical research to better understand and support the development of coordinative knowledge practices. Practical implications - The findings can be utilized in the analysis and assessment of coordinative knowledge practices between distributed work groups in multi-unit organizations. The findings can also be used in the development of solutions for knowledge sharing and communication in distributed work organizations and communities.

    Originality/value - The model developed provides a novel perspective for the study of knowledge practices in the context of distributed group work. The model proposes that varying degrees in work coupling intensity, social capital, spatio-temporality and affordances of collaborative technologies explain the emergence of coordinative knowledge practices. The study shows how coordinative knowledge practices can be studied empirically The empirical study resulted in a typology of coordinative knowledge practices.

    This panel debates whether the ways in which social media are changing the nature, creation, seeking, use and sharing of infor- mation constitute a transformation or are primarily marked by con- tinuity. Ubiquitous and everyday access to social media (for some) seems to be bringing about changes in social practice, including of information-related activities, such that conceptualisations of infor- mation itself are potentially reshaped. Discussants draw inspiration from the pervasive impact on information activities of the every- day adoption of social media. At a theoretical level they also draw inspiration from the analytic resources of contemporary practice theory and its emphasis on materiality and embodiment, routine and change, social expectations and social identity, and knowledge as a process. All the participants of the panel have conducted new empirical research on social media use with a focus on its deep as well as broad impact. The audience members are invited to dis- cuss with the panelists questions such as how social media relate to routinised daily practices and institutionalised practices and hi- erarchies, how their use refashions social relationships, how they turn information seekers and users into information managers, pro- ducers and creators and shape perceptions of information authority and trustworthiness, and how a new theorisation can help librari- ans, information professionals and researchers understand change and assume a proactive role in it.

    The advantages of altmetrics — the diversity of dissemination channels analysed, the speed of getting data, the openness of methods, and the ability to measure impact beyond the ‘scholarly realm’— could be seen as especially promising for fields that currently are difficult to study using established bibliometric methods and data sources. This paper reviews the benefits of using altmetric methods to analyse the impact of research in the humanities and tests some of the most common altmetric tools on a small sample of publications and authors. The findings indicate that many of the problems identified in research on the use of bibliometrics on the humanities are also relevant for altmetric approaches. The importance of non-journal publications, the reliance on print as well the limited availability of open access publishers are characteristics that hinder altmetric analysis. However, this study provides only a few examples and further studies are needed in order to examine the possibilities that altmetric methods offer.

    This article employs citation analysis on a micro level- the level of the cited document; in this case, Walter Benjamin's Illuminations (1968/2007). The study shows how this frequently cited publication-more than 4,000 citations in Web of Science-has been received. The growth of citations and interdisciplinary citing is studied, and a novel approach-page citation analysis-is applied to study how different parts of Illuminations have been cited. The article demonstrates how bibliometric methods can be used together with qualitative accounts to map the impact and dissemination of a particular publication. Furthermore, it shows how bibliometric methods can be utilized to study intellectual structures in the humanities, and highlights the influence of the humanities on the social sciences and sciences.

    Purpose: The aim of this article is to study a locally oriented and book-based research field using two Swedish-language sources. Knowledge about citation patterns outside journal based, English-language databases is scarce; thus a substantial part of research in the humanities and the social sciences is neglected in bibliometric studies.

    Design: Citation characteristics (publication type, language, gender and age) in the journal Tidskrift för Litteraturvetenskap (2000-2009) and in grant applications (2006-2009) are studied. The datasets are analyzed further, adopting an author-co-citation approach for depicting and comparing the ‘intellectual base’ of the field.

    Findings: It is shown that monographs and anthologies are the main publication channel in Swedish literary research. English, followed by Swedish, is the major language, and the gender of authors seems to influence citation practices. Furthermore, a common intellectual base of literary studies that is independent of publication type and language could be identified.

    Practical implications: Bibliometric analysis of fields within the humanities needs to go beyond established databases and materials. The extensive use of recent English-language monographs in Swedish literary studies informs the acquisition policy of university libraries serving literature scholars.

    Originality/value: Citation analysis of non-English sources offers further knowledge about scholarly fields with a local and ‘rural’ profile. The approach of using references in grant applications provides a novel and promising venue for bibliometric research.

    This article studies interdisciplinarity and the intellectual base of 34 literature journals using citation data from Web of Science. Data from two time periods, 1978-1987 and 1998-2007 were compared to reveal changes in the interdisciplinary citing of monographs. The study extends the analysis to non-source publications; using the classification of monographs to show changes in the intellectual base. There is support for increased interdisciplinary citing of sources, especially to the social sciences, and changes in the intellectual base reflect this. The results are explained using theories on the intellectual and social organization of scientific fields and the use of bibliometric methods on the humanities is discussed. The article demonstrates how citation analysis can provide insights into the communication patterns and intellectual structure of scholarly fields in the arts and humanities.

    The prospects of altmetrics are especially encouraging for research fields in the humanities that currently are difficult to study using established bibliometric methods. Yet, little is known about the altmetric impact of research fields in the humanities. Consequently, this paper analyses the altmetric coverage and impact of humanities-oriented articles and books published by Swedish universities during 2012. Some of the most common altmetric sources are examined using a sample of 310 journal articles and 54 books. Mendeley has the highest coverage of journal articles (61 %) followed by Twitter (21 %) while very few of the publications are mentioned in blogs or on Facebook. Books, on the other hand, are quite often tweeted while both Mendeley’s and the novel data source Library Thing’s coverage is low. Many of the problems of applying bibliometrics to the humanities are also relevant for altmetric approaches; the importance of non-journal publications, the reliance on print as well the limited coverage of non-English language publications. However, the continuing development and diversification of methods suggests that altmetrics could evolve into a valuable tool for assessing research in the humanities.

    Given the increased role of bibliometric measures in research evaluation, it is striking that studies of actual changes in research practice are rare. Most studies and comments on ’a metric culture’ in academia focus on the ideological and political level, and there is a clear shortage of empirical studies that analyze how researchers handle demands for accountability in context. In adopting a mixed methods approach involving both bibliometric data and answers form questionnaires we provide an in-depth study of how researchers at the faculty of Arts at Uppsala University (Sweden) respond to the implementation of performance based research evaluation systems. Publication patterns from 2006-2013 show that journal publications, especially English-language ones, is increasing, and the proportion of peer-reviewed publications has doubled. These changes are in line with the incentives of the evaluation systems under study. Answers to the survey confirm that scholars are conscious about this development and several respondents articulate a disagreement between disciplinary norms and external demands. However, disciplinary background as well as career stage or academic age appears to have a significant influence on how individual researchers react to the instigation of evaluation systems. Finally, responses to national and local evaluation regimes are complex, localized and dependent on many factors. In-depth contextualized studies of research practices are needed in order to understand how performance based funding systems influence academic research on the ground.
