Scandinavia and Europe 800–1350: Contact, Conflict and Coexistence2004Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This volume examines the various forms of contact between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe from 800 to 1350. It consists of twenty-five papers from international scholars specialising in archaeology, onomastics, literature, art history, epigraphy, religious history and linguistics. The volume is innovative in three respects: (i) in transcending conventional historical boundaries, by bringing together work on both the viking and medieval periods; (ii) by examining the ways in which mainland Europe influenced Scandinavia (e.g. kingship, law and social organisation; and classical and continental literary traditions); and (iii) by synthesising all the material for an English-language readership for the first time. The broader timespan of investigation illustrates the changing nature of contact and the gradual integration of Scandinavia into European society: by 1350 Scandinavia was no longer a heathen outpost on the periphery of the known world, but an integral part of Western Christendom. The cultural impact of mainland Europe on Scandinavia, frequently mediated through religious channels, although less dramatic, is shown to have had a more significant long-term impact than the earlier viking raids. The volume is structured around the following sections: Historical and Archaeological Evidence for [Scandinavian] Contact with the British Isles; Evidence for the Linguistic Impact of Scandinavian Settlement; Evidence for the Impact of Christianity on Scandinavia; Textual Evidence for Contact, Conflict, and Coexistence.

    Abstract [en]

This article outlines a planned research project concerning Swedish women in international politics. We are guided by the notion that international organizations and embassies can be understood as an alternative public arena for Swedish feminists. Using MP Cecilia Nettelbrandt as an example, we wanted to show that troublesome politicians could be sent away from domestic politics and that Nettelbrandt in her turn used the international feminist cooperation and her commission as an ambassador as an alternative public arena.

Equivalence et saillance dans l'expression de la localisation frontale dynamique en suédois et en français: Etude comparative et contrastive de fram et de (s’)avancer/en avant2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present study deals with the expression of frontal orientation in dynamic contexts as lexicalised in the Swedish particle fram and its French equivalents (s')avancer/en avant. The study is based on a parallel corpus containing approximately one millon words of Swedish and one million words of French fiction and it consists of a comparison made on the basis of monolingual and crosslinguistic data. The study links with current trends in both cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. The aim of the study is twofold : first it sets out to measure to what extent these forms express the same type of orientations and to what extent they do use these in domains other than the spatial one; second it sets out to measure to what extent these forms are used as translational equivalents as well as to list the other types of translational equivalents that occur in the corpus. This is done in order to evaluate the salience of the concept of frontal orientation in the both languages compared and to get a view of other types of conceptualizations that underlie the linguistic expression of the other language when the Swedish and the French texts do not make the same use of the expression of frontal orientation.

En studie i text/musikproblematik: Relationen mellan dikt och ton i sånger av Lille Bror Söderlundh och Emil Sjögren.2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

Anna Axelson: En studie i text/musikproblematik.

Paths to Adulthood: Freedom, Belonging, and Temporalities in Mbunda Biographies from Western Zambia2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, Michael Barrett explores the relationship between adulthood and historical processes in a rural district of Western Zambia. Approaching the life cycle from a perspective of social practice, the potential and limits of conditioning is illuminated through ethnography and life histories of Mbunda people in Kalabo District of Western Province. Situated between the Zambezi River and the Angolan border, the district suffered harsh economic decline during the last decades of the 20th century, creating a demanding social environment for young people in need of its resources for livelihood, household formation, and marriage. The study traces young people’s life paths in time and space, between urban and rural areas and through the ebb and flow of social relationships. Concerns like male and female initiation, marriage, style, and livelihood are examined and put in the context of longstanding idioms of sociality as well as global influences. Through an historical perspective on social cohorts, the dissertation throws light on the temporal conditions of adulthood facing people in rural Zambia. With a theoretical framework grounded in regional social landscapes and attuned to the realities of particular persons, broader issues like historicity, power, gender and creativity are examined through the prism of adulthood.

Herders hieroglyf: Om den okända metoden i hans författarskap2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation addresses the problem if Johann Gottfried Herder had a method when he composed his works. The overwhelming majority of scholars says no and describes him as a restless author who reworks manuscripts; digressing and repeating himself; leaning on others rather than writing a monographic work on his own – someone who does not write complete and structured works, and therefore is seen as a precursor in history rather than occupying a place in it.

This thesis claim that Herder’s work is structured in minutest detail, and demonstrates how Herder uses typographic marks to guide the reader through his dialectical text-structure.

Herder uses a four-step dialectic. It starts from a center-position with a confused issue, which is analyzed and put together again. The second position analyses one aspect of the issue at hand in one direction and the third in an opposite direction. These consecutive steps in the reading process could be regarded as simultaneous parts of an image. The fourth fuses and simultaneously changes them into a new center-position, which presents the issue in a new form.

This four-step movemen can be repeated in a series of such movements. The fourth position turns then into a new starting-point. The issue is further analyzed. Positions two and three continues the perspective of foregoing two and three. The fourth position brings together.

The first part gives a representive overview of the research on Herder. Special attention is givien to editions, and how they leave out typographic marks important for understanding the text’s structure. Research is characterized as a turning away from Herder’s works, either to handwriting or to a tradition which Herder only partly belongs to. Herder is instead situated in aesthetics – his “human philosophy”. The second part analyzes The Oldest Document of the human race.

    Abstract [en]

Mourning music for a dead Queen. On the music for the funeral of Queen Ulrika Eleonora the younger in 1693

Ulrika Eleonora the younger, Queen of Sweden since 1680, died in July 1693. She was buried in the Royal funeral church, Riddarholmskyrkan, on November 28 the same year. The Queen’s funeral was shaped to be one of the most magnificent ceremonies of state in Sweden during the baroque era. The decorations for the ceremony were created by the Royal court architect, Nicodemus Tessin the younger (1654–1728). For the Queen’s coffin he built a castrum doloris with a huge black pyramid, covered with emblems and inscriptions painted in golden colour, which were illuminated by lamps inside the construction (see illustration).

Little or nothing has been known about the music played during this ceremony. According to the official relation two musical works were performed. In this article I am able to show that the works referred to consisted in one composition by the French court violinist Pierre Verdier, Kristus är mitt liv, and one by the Flemish composer Daniel Danielis, Ascpice e caelis, with a new text in Swedish. This can be shown by means of source and watermark studies and by analysing the texts. The bible word “Kristus är mitt liv och döden är min vinning” (Phil. 1:21: “to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain”) serving as text base for Verdier’s piece was the Queens motto and the text for the sermon. An interesting fact is that Danielis’ Aspice e caelis was originally composed in 1672 for the funeral of a princess of Güstrow-Mecklenburg, who was a cousin to Ulrika Eleonora’s husband the King, and who bore the same name as the deceased Queen.

Both works are marked by a sad, plaintive affect appropriate for such an occasion. Both are set in c minor and scored for gamba consort, which in this time was associated with tears and sorrow. Arguably, one could relate the specifically sweet and tearful character of these pieces to the Queens’ female gender. Contemporary funeral music for Kings and male heroes seem to have had a more dignified and moderate affect. In both works we find instances of symbolic, rhethorical personification: in Verdiers composition the duet between bass and soprano can arguably be associated with the Queens’ tender relation to Christ. In Danieli’s motet the solo soprano voice can be linked to female gender of the person being buried.
