Att skriva i naturorienterande ämnen i skolan2006Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

When children encounter new subjects in school, they are also faced with new ways of using language. Learning science thus means learning the language of science, and writing is one of the ways this is accomplished. The present study investigates writing in natural sciences in grades 5 and 8 in Swedish schools. Major theoretical influences for these investigations are found within the socio-cultural, dialogical and social semiotic perspectives on language use.

The study is based on texts written by 97 students, interviews around these texts and observations from 16 different classroom practices. Writing is seen as a situated practice; therefore analysis is carried out of the activities surrounding the texts. The student texts are analysed in terms of genre and in relation to their abstraction, density and use of expansions. This analysis shows among other things that the texts show increasing abstraction and density with increasing age, whereas the text structure and the use of expansions do not increase.

It is also argued that a central point in school writing must be the students’ way of talking about their texts. Analysis of interviews with the students is thus carried out in terms of text movability. The results from this analysis indicate that students find it difficult to talk about their texts. They find it hard to express the main content of the text, as well as to discuss it’s function and potential readers.

Previous studies argue that writing constitutes a potential for learning. In the material studied in this thesis, this potential learning tool is not used to any large extent. To be able to participate in natural sciences in higher levels, students need to take part in practices where the specialized language of natural science is used in writing as well as in speech.

    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Erik Ageberg: Who's that girl? – Skivbolagskultur och dess påverkan på Robyn. Uppsala Universitet: Institutionen för Musikvetenskap. C-uppsats, 2006.

Robyn has been one of the most successful Swedish pop stars during the last decade. She has during these ten last years gone from being a young star to being the owner of her own record label, Konichiwa Records. As a result of her last record she became an artist, highly respected by her fellow artists and the audience. The aim of this essay is to discuss the term artistic freedom in the light of Robyn's career. The organization of the music industry is the starting point of the discussion. The way the record companies create their artists are linked to the demands of the public regarding the music they wish to purchase. Accordingly, the artistic freedom is limited by the public in an indirect manner. When artists refer to artistic freedom, or lack of it, it is the author's opinion that it should be understood as a confusion of conceptual arguments. The claim of this thesis is that as the artist refers to the negligence of artistic freedom he or she is in fact targeting on the organizational culture of the music company.

    Abstract [en]

Challenging the clergy’s monoclinic interpretational power, Islamic feminists in Iran, by emphasizing the historical context of the holy texts and reformulating Islamic concepts and law from a “feminist” perspective, are developing a new direction in rethinking gender in Islam. By opening the doors of interpretation of sacred texts and debates on women issues to other groups than Muslims, they have braked with reactive gender conservatism and West phobia prevailing among fundamentalists, and have embarked on connecting themselves with Western feminism and weaving new textual connections between Muslim women and Western feminism.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study explores the relationship between the lecturing language (English or Swedish) and the related learning experiences of 22 undergraduate physics students at two Swedish universities. Students attended lectures in both English and Swedish as part of their regular undergraduate programme. These lectures were videotaped and students were then interviewed about their learning experiences using selected excerpts of the video in a process of stimulated recall. The study finds that although the students initially report no difference in their experience of learning physics when taught in Swedish or English, there are in fact some important differences which become apparent during stimulated recall. The pedagogical implications of these differences are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

In 1164 the "archbishopric of Sweden" was established at "Gamla Uppsala", once the political centre of the "Svear kingdom" in the late Iron Age and a stronghold of pre-Christian cult. This highly symbolic decision was manifested through the construction of one of the largest churches in Scandinavia.

The cathedral church at Gamla Uppsala was allegedly built on the same spot as the famous "pagan temple2 described by "Adam of Bremen" in the early 1070s. Excavations carried out there in 1926 revealed a highly complex stratigraphic sequence and a confusing set of postholes that were immediately interpreted as the remains of the temple. Though still maintained today in school textbooks and elsewhere, this conclusion is clearly erroneous as the postholes can be shown stratigraphically to belong to different phases of construction.

The exact events of the period c. 1050-1150 in Gamla Uppsala have never been satisfactorily understood, but there is clear evidence to suggest that the cathedral was by no means the first church to have been built on the site. In an effort to elucidate this early history of the church plateau, in 2003-04 the authors examined the area with ground-penetrating radar. In this paper we discuss some of the more important results of these investigations.

The Nothing That Is: The Structure of Consciousness in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens2006Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of the poetry of the American writer Wallace Stevens (1879-1955). Stevens’ poetry is often concerned with the relation between consciousness and world, the perceiver and the perceived. This dissertation takes the investigation of the very “structure” or “pattern” of consciousness as its main purpose. Influenced by the theoretical implications of thematic criticism, this dissertation regards Stevens’ collected works as a unified whole or as an imaginary universe in which the manifestation of consciousness and world is connected to the poetic utterance itself. In short, Stevens’ oeuvre provides a poetic world in which a cogito is inscribed, a cogito which offers itself to be manifested through the interpretative act as an independent ontological category. This cogito is upheld and ordered by a specific thematic structure which permeates Stevens’ entire imaginary universe. It is the fundamental aim of this dissertation to convey this thematic pattern, a pattern that is divided in three distinct yet closely interrelated aesthetic categories: the descent, nothingness, and the ascent. Supported by phenomenology and existentialism in general, and the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre in particular, this study offers “thematic close readings” of representative poems which all are argued to convey this thematic pattern in their own individual way.

Chapter I offers a survey of Stevens criticism and it ends with a discussion of the theoretical and methodological perspective of the present investigation. Chapter II, III, and IV correspond respectively to the three thematic divisions, and the study is brought to a closure in a Postscript that is framed by the poem “Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction.” Each chapter is in large chronologically arranged and attempts to show how each individual theme is manifested throughout Stevens’ oeuvre, and also in what way the different parts of the general thematic pattern interrelate.

    Portals of beauty

The county of Hälsingland is well-known for its large, red-painted farms decorated with impressing porches. In Forsa though, there are white doors typical for this parish. They are decorated with ornaments like flowers, fabulous beasts and biblical inscriptions. The aim of this essay is to compare doors created by the carpenters in Forsa Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust with the portals by the artist Pehr Westman in the parish of Hemsö, Ångermanland, at the beginning of the 19th century. The carpenters are studied in their social, economical, cultural and architectural context. Jöns Månsson and Jonas Lust developed characteristic mixtures of rococo, Swedish Classicism, empire for decoration of doors, portals, interiors, and furniture. They belonged to a social category called outsiders who were not farmers but often farm-hands, tenement soldiers and craftsmen. Their work can be studied as artistic interpretations of the local mentality, its normsystem, style-codex. The portals of Pehr Westman in Hemsö, Ångermanland, are considered as independent works by a self-conscious talented artist who did not follow a local aesthetic system. Westman was a farmer himself, but delivered artistically expressiv Gustavian portals to local farmers, mansions, burghers in nearest town Härnösand, and Stockholm, where he also had his education. Pehr Westman introduced the Swedish Classicism in Ångermanland. His local cultural knowledge and the style of the regional rural architecture facilitated his introducation of a new style. Storsnickare in Norrland were stylists in independent pre-industrial communities aware of new fashion styles, and of the different tastes in other parishes and nearest town. The craftsman who was at the one with the aesthetics of the parishioners and could add some innovation, was the most sought after, in Hälsingland as well as Ångermanland.
