    Abstract [en]

This article presents the photographers Mathilda Ranch (1860-1938) in the town of Varberg in the south of Sweden and Agnes Andersson (1865-1958) in the parish of Alfta in north of Sweden. In their lifetime Sweden was changing into the industrial era introducing new professions beyond gender connotations. Individuals desiring independence found new lifestyles. Ranch and Andersson both lived in their own houses and never married. As photographers they lived in a modern zone where they could reject a compulsory heteronormative partnership. In Varberg, people said that Mathilda Ranch did not like men, due to her inferior social position as an unmarried woman. In Alfta, there was a silence concerning the familylife of Agnes Andersson although her "foster daughter" took over the atelier. Agnes Andersson is an appreciated photographer and parishoner, but as "Mathilda" in Varberg often intimately diminished as "Agnes" and far from fame outside Alfta. Why is Agnes Andersson held back?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this thesis was to apply a critical discourse analyses connected to a gender theory on the Swedish subject headings (SAO) to find a hierarchical order expressed by the choice of words. The thesis shows how gender discourses are practiced in the Swedish subject headings and suggests a change in the list. To examine this list I asked some questions: does SAO express a male norm? Can I find any gender based power relations in SAO? How does a gender discourse express it self in SAO?

To examine the list Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis has been used, also Michel Foucault's ideas about discourses. To the discourse analysis Yvonne Hirdman's gender theories have been connected. To suggest changes I've used theories by Maud Eduards. The subject headings examined were picked from the royal library's webpage; this method has been used to get access to the laest version of the list.

An overwhelming majority of the examined words showed a male norm and a gender discourse that expresses a female subordination and gender inequality. The inner discourses of the list affect the social context, this in turn affects how the user think, interpret and create new words. At the end of the work changes of the subject headings are given in which both male and female terms are subordinated, this to show the male, not as an universal subject, but a gender and by that eliminate a gender based hierarchy.

En ny sits. Humaniora i förvandlig: Vänbok till Margaretha Fahlgren2008Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Learning together apart: Distance education in a virtual world2008In: First Monday, ISSN 1396-0466, E-ISSN 1396-0466, Vol. 13, no 10Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A course in information studies was partly held in the virtual world of Second Life. Second Life was used as a platform to deliver lectures and as a place for organizing group assignments and having discussions. Students’ opinions about Second Life were studied and compared to their opinions about more traditional methods in education. The results show a lower threshold for participation in lectures. According to the students, Second Life should not replace face–to–face education, but it could serve as an excellent addition to other more traditional methods and platforms used in education. The students also considered that lectures held in Second Life were much more “fun” than those using other methods. This particular aspect, and its effect on learning outcomes, requires further research. This research demonstrates that Second Life has potential as a learning environment in distance education.

    Abstract [en]

Even though information literacy implicitly comprises an idea of a complete participation in an information community, the typical definitions of infor- mation literacy have tended to underline seeking, searching, locating, re- ceiving and evaluation instead of information creation. Wilder (2005) has criticised the concept information literacy for emphasising the problems of searching instead of finding relevant information. The problematising of in- formation seeking places emphasis on the difficulty of searching and the complexity of required skills. A more sensible approach would be to facili- tate information use rather than to teach searching using complicated tools. All information sought by human-beings is mostly produced by their fellow humans. Therefore an approach to decrease complexity of information searching could to be to educate people to create more searchable and us- able information. This article discusses information creation as a part of the concept information literacy. Besides technical problems, information crea- tion education is inevitably faced by the complexities of social and cultural dimensions of information and information production.

To whom it may concern?: The users and uses of digital archaeological information2008In: The Layers of Perception: CAA 2007. Computer Applications and Quantitative methods in Archaeology / [ed] Posluschny, A., Lambers, K., Herzog, I., Bonn: Deutsches Archäologisches Institut / Dr. Rudolph Habelt Gmbh , 2008Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In order to ensure the functional, not only physical sustainability of the earlier and current archaeological information resources, a special emphasis is needed on the functional aspects of preserva- tion. This paper reports on a study, which has explored the interface between the human patterns of infor- mation use and the methods of structuring and organizing archaeological information and knowledge. The empirical case study was based on a series of thematic interviews with archaeology professionals from the Nordic countries. The study informs future development of information systems and information services for archaeology and cultural heritage professionals. The results of the analysis shows that there are two critical success factors. Several recommendations are proposed on how to improve archaeological informa- tion work and its outcomes.

Work and work roles: a context of tasks2008In: Journal of Documentation, ISSN 0022-0418, E-ISSN 1758-7379, Vol. 64, no 6, p. 797-815Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Both task-based and work oriented research approaches have proved their value in information science research. A task is a workable analytical unit of human activity, which brings the level of explication close enough to cater for individual actions and their consequences. Similarly, work and work roles have been effective concepts at explicating the broad patterns of professional information activity. Major issues of the existing approaches are the difficulty of conceptualising the contexts of tasks and the relatively high level of abstraction of a work level scrutiny. The purpose of this paper is to discuss how the concepts of ‘work’, ‘work role’ and ‘task’ might be integrated into a common research agenda. We suggest that the explication of work and work roles might serve in providing additional understanding on the formation of the purposes, meanings and values, which guide the shaping of the activities conceptualised as tasks.

Methodology/Approach: The issue is discussed in general with a reference to an empirical study of information work of archaeology professionals informed by the notion of work role.

Findings: It is suggested that the broader notions of work and work roles are useful concepts for explicating the context of more specific tasks.

Research limitations/implications: The suggested approach brings together task and work – work role-based research and provides a basis for exploring human information activity from a broader perspective than before and thus improving the general understanding of why and how information is used as it is used.

Practical implications: The study provides an approach to conceptualise the ways how people work with information and lays the ground for improving information management and organisation practices.

Originality: There has been little prior discussion about integrating the task and work-based approaches. We suggest that the explication of work and work roles might serve in providing additional understanding on the formation of the purposes, meanings and values, which guide the shaping of the activities conceptualised as tasks.

Chick lit – etablerandet av en genre i det svenska litterära systemet 2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master thesis is to study the establishing and status of chick lit in the Swedish literary system. For this study I have used twenty chick lit books that are translated into Swedish and have been published in Sweden between 1995 and 2008. I have then studied how these books are marketed, if and how they are reviewed in newspapers and by libraries, and to what extent libraries buy the books and people borrow them. Finally I looked at blogs to see how the books are appreciated by ordinary readers.

The opinions of the different actors in the literary system seem to be somewhat different. The reviewers in newspapers can be a bit negative about the genre, the reviewers of the libraries express more favourable opinions, and the libraries buy most of the books. The publishing houses are positive about the genre, and they have started using the term ‘chick lit’ in their descriptions. It’s hence difficult to generalize what view the Swedish literary system takes of this genre,
