    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the experiences of public library staff who works in an LGBTQ-profiled children’s library. The aim of the study is further to find out whether the library as an institution can challenge heteronormativity or if traditional gender identities are reproduced. I have conducted five qualitative interviews with librarians who all work in the same library, and who all work with children to some extent. The interview material is analyzed with queer theory and norm critical theories of pedagogy. These perspectives wish to critically examine heteronormativity and change what is defined as normal.

    The result of the study shows that the way the library works with separate rainbow shelves, where LGBTQ-themed material is gathered, is pointing out LGBTQ as something different. And although it may also shed a light on a group formerly made invisible, it is reproducing traditional gender identities and leaves heteronormativity unquestioned. By contrast, the way the librarians are working with always including LGBTQ-materials in programming as storytimes and book presentations, is challenging the dominant position of heterosexuality. It is also shown that the way the library staff has developed their written and oral communication with the patrons, including using the gender neutral pronomina ”hen” and alternatives to ”mom and dad”, is increasing the possibilities of an inclusive reception in the library. The oral communication is for various reasons not always used though.

    In conclusion the interviews show that the librarians are positive to working with LGBTQ-issues although they sometimes tend to forget. The study further concludes that the library’s way of working with LGBTQ-issues is both reproducing traditional gender identities, and challenging heteronormative structures.

    Abstract [en]

    This master's thesis focuses on the argumentation of library organisations and European national libraries in their contributions to the European Commission's public consultation on the review of the EU copyright rules. This study aims to explain how the debate around copyright limitations and exceptions is constructed in library stakeholders' contributions. The construction is explained through argumentation analysis and a theoretical framework of the relations between structural, instrumental, and discursive power.

    The main findings are that library stakeholders in general are strongly supportive of a EU copyright reform, arguing that democratic values as well as the EU Single Market would benefit. There are also library stakeholders who argue against legislative change, either suggesting extended collective licences, or arguing that the Member States' sovereignity is more important than a pan-European copyright legislation. Furthermore, many library stakeholders propose either a general ”fair use” exception in EU copyright law, or adding several specific exceptions, e.g. for text and data mining, e-lending, publicly funded research openly available, and that contracts and technical protection measures cannot override limitations and exceptions. National libraries and library organisations from the Central and Eastern European Member States' are more supportive of a copyright reform than their Western European counterparts. They do not mention licences as a possible solution. In general, the library stakeholders agree that the interoperability, exchange and cooperation in activities and projects involving several EU Member States suffers from the current copyright legislation.

    Abstract [en]

    In the new Library Act of 2014, it is stated that public library supply should be characterized by quality. To investigate what this means for the library, I do a functional analysis of ideas of librarians' views on quality and how they work with purchasing, weeding and mediation. I have chosen to limit the essay to fiction for adults in Swedish public libraries. By combining the basal idea analysis, where I investigate librarians' ideas about quality, with an operational analysis of ideas, where I examine the effects librarians' quality ideas get for the daily work, Iwant to find out the librarians' quality ideals.

    The material I analyze consists of 18 questionnaires, filled out by librarians with responsibility for purchasing and / or thinning in libraries across Sweden. The analysis is done with an analytical schedule, that consists of a number of opposing ideal types taken from previous research on quality, purchasing, thinning or mediation. In this way I want to show how librarians quality idea and practical work relate to previous quality ideas and ways of working.

    The result shows two in many ways opposing ideas of quality: craftsmanship, where quality sits in the work's aesthetic, and impact on the reader, where quality arrisis in the meeting with the reader. Put in context, idea number one can be seen in quality definitions where quality is seen as relatively objective, where experts best can judge a work's quality. The second quality idea is often associated with a user-defined and subjective quality. One can also see how it is a special kind of impact, development, that is associated with quality.

    If we look instead at the operational analysis we can see how librarians, especially in the work of purchasing, promote the popular, both in terms of authors, titles and genres. The librarians purchase a lot on demand and use circulation figures to see what needs to be purchased: that which it lent much. Popularity rather than quality is what decides what should be purchased, except for literature of very low quality that is not bought at all. Also in weeding circulation figures is used; even though literature of very high quality is moved to the magazine instead of beeing weeded. Regarding the mediation of literature, librarians to some extent try to lead their users toward literature of higher quality, but they are careful not to judge neither reader or literature. When giving advice on literature, it is from one reader to another. It is important that the readers themselves choose what and how they want to read. User influence is what steer the work of purchase, weeding and mediation.

    The librarians quality ideas only to a very limited extent influence the librarians practical work, why I believe that it is impossible to speak of a quality ideal. Instead I want to describe the librarians' way of thinking about the library's literature as a value ideal. Furthermore, I would call the librarians value ideal a customer-driven value ideal, where the user is seen as an enlightened and well-informed customer with both the right and the knowledge to determine what the library should purchase and prioritize.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the closure of public libraries, and the nonprofit organizations takeover of them as a phenomenon. The aim is to understand why the nonprofit takeover is common and what the takeover symbolizes and if the discourse in media invokes the views on libraries and the profession.Interviews were made with librarians, politicians and representatives of a nonprofit organization to study different sides of the phenomenon. Other empirical data were found in local and national newspapers and media-channels. I discovered that public libraries are highly valued by both politicians and the community. The study also showed that a library in a community makes people feel valued. It is often the economical problems of the communities that increases the risk of library closures. The politicians request in media, where they sometimes demand nonprofit organizations to take over library activity, can reflect upon the value of the profession and the opinions about the field. The takeover seems to be an effort of keeping the symbol that the library represents in the community and it also seems to be a symbol for the community. The symbol is for example associated with a democratic meeting-place, education and integration. The librarian is associated with good service. This is a two years master’s thesis in library and information science.

    The Setting of Negotiation Agendas in Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    International polices on involuntary resettlement have been developed for the last 30 years following the ground breaking World Bank guidelines from the 1980s.  The World Bank is now reviewing their safeguards on involuntary resettlement presented in The Environmental and Social Safeguards Frame (ESF) (2014).These policies partially set the agenda for the protracted and conflictive on-the ground negotiations between the main stakeholders (lender, client (government or private) and the people to be displaced. In these policies, the participatory model has been in focus in order to empower and strengthening the community engagement. This paper argues that it is not about participation per se, but about negotiations.

    Five Sides of the Same Coin: The Place of Global Policy Frameworks in the Setting of Negotiation Agendas of Involuntary Resettlement2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper contributes to the discussion of the role of policy guidelines in involuntary resettlement projects in the light of the World Bank´s revision of its safeguards Environmental and Social Safeguards (2014). The paper concludes that the present and proposed guidelines do not take into consideration the complexity on the ground in these kinds of stressful projects.  The authors have a unique possibility to compare "inside and outside" events and decisions as one of the author was embedded in the local culture while the other one was the assigned resettlement expert of the lenders.

    Abstract [en]

    The starting point of this study is a letter to the Swedish Research Council which maintained the difficulty to reconcile chemistry with open access. Previous studies show that when other sciences is increasing in both the deposition rate and selection of OA journals, there is a lull in chemistry. The purpose of the master thesis is to gain an understanding of chemists reluctance to open access in the light of the implementation of Chalmers' mandating open access policy and through field theoretical perspectives understand why. The survey is conducted with a qualitative approach and the empirical data consist of interview material from nine interviews that took place at Chalmers Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The interviews show that chemists believe that the idea of open access is certainly sympathetic but incompatible with the chemical sciences. It is believed that the discipline´s traditions, practice and publishing culture as well as opportunities for career differs from other sciences, including what open access is concerned. This uniqueness has not been taken into account in the implementation of OA policies of funding agencies and universities, according to the informants.

    Evaluations of other universities implementations of open acces policies have identified success factors like support, legal advice and hands-on help in self-archiving. According to the results of this thesis, functionality and infrastructure appears to be less significant if university management and funders does not establish an atmosphere of alliance and thus undermines confidence in the policy and its proponents. The study confirms the importance of the researchers feel invited and involved in the process of change.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the essay has been to examine representations of immigrants in contemporary library and information science research in a Scandinavian context. By analyzing nine articles from the past decade we examine the perceptions that exist in the concepts of multiculturalism, culture, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and whiteness and what role and importance the library as a place is assigned in relation to immigrants as a user group. Our study consists of a qualitative text analysis, a critical oriented close reading method based on critical race and whiteness studies and intersectional theory. We have, with the help of Sara Ahmed´s theories of hegemonic whiteness, demonstrated how multiculturalism is partly presented as something desirable and good, partly as something potentially threatening.

    The discourse of multiculturalism can be said to express the notions of the other, which in the source material manifests itself by ascribing otherness to immigrants. We have, for example, examined how ethnical and cultural differences are highlighted by a separation of East and West, the library’s educational and assisting role in relation to immigrants as a user group as well as representations of whiteness, gender and clothes. In the analysis we point to a number of complex and paradoxical representations of multiculturalism and immigrants in earlier studies of the public library. With this study we wish to encourage further user studies to nuance these representations. The study is a two-year Master’s thesis in Library and Information Science written at Uppsala University.

    Abstract [en]

    This master's thesis in Library and Information Science examines how the genre division of the horror fictionis constructed at the children and youth department of a library by studying subject headings of the titles.The aim is to examine what is included in the genre, in the two labelings called vampire and nail-biter/spine-chiller, what separates them, and what difference there is between children and youth thrillers/horror fiction. Also the cover designs and how readers portray these books are studied. The study is made in order to develop the knowledge of the genre to help librarians and borrowers. The great popularity of the genre among borrowers and people in general, and the importance of having knowledge of things that borrowers are interested in, are the motivation of performing the study. The method is a case study and conducted with and based on genre theory which shows how a genre is defined, how it can be divided and what conventions there are for the horror fiction in particular. Discourse analysis helps to see in between what frames the thriller is constructed, and how these elements subdivide the genre and influence it and those who encounter it, library borrowers and librarians. Di-scourse analysis also examines the standards of the thriller.The analysis showed that the discourse of horror fiction includes both the expected features, in terms ofgenre conventions, such as ghosts and vampires, and more commonplace such as sisters. The differences and similarities of these parts in the genre were discussed and compared in the light of discourse analysis and genre theory in order to reveal how these constructions might influence the readers and the borrowers. The major conc-lusions of the study is that the encounter between the unexpected and menacing, and the everyday life is what makes the thriller frightening, now as in history, and so it follows its genre conventions. The discourse of the hor-ror fiction standards are difficult to influence by being expected of borrowers and otherwise they are not thrillers. The study has shown that certain subjects recur more often than other which may affect the borrower in its per-ception of the genre. The genre division helps giving the borrower different kinds of frights and experiences. The joint is that the supernatural is present in the whole genre and convey feelings of excitement and fear which is the most important representative of the genre.     Abstract [en]

    Professional (i.e. extra-academic) contract archaeology is an internationally widespread practice contributing significantly to the archaeological literature. However, professional knowledge production in archaeology, and most notably the professional report genre, is at times described as problematic. The problem descriptions are ambiguous and can be grouped under at least three different topics: concerns for content quality and practical accessibility, concerns for the comparably low degree of analytical and theoretical synthesizing in reports and concerns for lack of mutual knowledge transfer between academic archaeologists and professional archaeologists. Technical issues of access are to an increasing extent being solved. Format standardizations are also developing. Hence the report genre becomes more accessible, and the content more readable and informative. Yet articulations of attitudes toward the genre in archaeology text books and journal articles remain focused on the genre’s problems. The aim of my ongoing dissertation research is to nuance the understanding of the professional report genre in archaeology. I do so by analyzing factors shaping reporting as it takes place in the intersection between academic norms, professional values and market logics. I argue an improved genre understanding is crucial to diminish cultural issues of access to the report literature, and also as a basis for development of reporting practices. In1the dissertation research I analyze (1) perceptions about the report genre in archaeology literature, (2) information policy regulating reporting in archaeology, (3) how report writers and county board professionals interpret the reporting and report auditing work tasks and (4) the frames of reference report writers bring into reporting. The aim of this paper is to explicate the research design consisting of four sub-studies, to briefly report on findings from study no. 4, and to discuss preliminary, partial results from study no. 2.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    This study aims at nuancing the perception about professional documentation (a.k.a. ‘grey literature’), assuming perception of documentation being a cultural aspect of accessibility.

    Design/methodology/approach

    The study explores variations within the archaeological report genre through a bibliometric analysis of source use. Source characteristics are explored as well as correlations between report authors and source originators. Statistical frequency distribution is complemented by a correspondence analysis and a k-Means cluster analysis to explore patterns. The patterns are interpreted as ‘frames of references’ and related to circumstances for archaeological work. The study also discusses source representations.

    Findings

    The source use patterns reveal a latent variation, not visible in the general analysis: a professional/academic frame of reference (mainly among authors affiliated with incorporated businesses and sole proprietorships) and an administrative frame of reference (mainly among authors affiliated with government agencies, foundations and member associations) emerge.

    Research limitations/implications

    The study focuses on Swedish field evaluation reports. Future research could 1) test the results in relation to other types of reports, and 2) go beyond the document perspective to explore source use in documentation practices.

    Social implications

    The results on variations in frames of references among report writers have implication for report readers and user. The results should also be considered in archaeology management and policy-making. On the level of source representation the results call for clarifications of vague representations and possibly omitted sources.

    Originality/value

    This study contextualises archaeological information use and focuses on variations in professional archaeology which has received little previous research attention. The bibliometric approach complements previous qualitative studies of archaeological information.

    Abstract [en]

    The introduction of digital data capturing and management technologies has transformed information practices in archaeology. Digital documentation and digital infrastructures are integrated in archaeologists' daily work now more than ever. International and national institutions and projects have contributed to the development of digital archiving and curation practices. Because knowledge production in archaeology depends heavily on documentation and information dissemination, and on retrieval of past documentation, the question of how information is managed is profoundly intertwined with the possibilities for knowledge production. Regulations at different levels articulate demands and expectations from the emerging digital information practices, but how are these different regulations coordinated, and do they support archaeological knowledge production?

    In this article we look into the state of information policy - the sum of principles guiding decisions about information - in archaeology and related areas. The aim of the article is to shed light on how information policy directs practice in archaeology, and to show that analysis of such policies is therefore vital. Information policy in legislation and guidelines in Swedish archaeology serves as a case study, and examples from development-led archaeology and the museum sector illustrate how information policies have varied roles across different heritage sectors. There are historical and local trajectories in the policy documents specific to Sweden, but the discussion shows that the emergence of Swedish policies have many parallels with processes in other countries. The article provides recommendations for information policy development for archaeology and related areas.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this master thesis is to study the correlation and meaning of current ideas and practice at the public library of Gothenburg. This was done by comparing the visions and ideas expressed by the library through the library plan, with how the daily practice looks. For the theoretical framework organizational theory is used and research data was collected both from public documents and through observations. The public library of Gothenburg were chosen for the study because of it's newly renovated facilities. The idea is that these facilities make a suitable study object of the current ideas and priorities of the public Swedish library in general.The results show that the public library practice in Sweden still rests on the original public library ideas such as offering information for free and treating every user as equal. It also shows the importance of legitimizing new activities by relating them to more familiar ingredients. When developing the organization it's critical for the library to remain recognizable as a public library to avoid damaging the brand name. The new facilities of the public library of Gothenburg do well to correspond to the ideas and visions expressed in the library plan. Generous opening hours and accessible facilities seem to help in attracting many visitors. Some questions are raised regardning the lack of dedicated reading rooms, when it is stated by the library that the meeting between the user and the information still should be regarded as the central aspect of the library practice. Room for improvment is also seen regarding the ambition of offering more ways of communication and participation. On the whole the realization of the library plan is deemed to be well on it's way, which is seen as a positive example of the much debated usefulness of the library plans. However, it is also noted in the study how some of the wide ambitions sometimes risks conflicting with each other.

    The subject of this thesis is dance as archive material. Illustrations, dance notation, reviews, photographs, moving imagery and motion capture are studied as different types of records which preserve dance. The purpose is to find out what has happened between dance and dance record. What kind of representation of dance are the records? The study also connects to a user perspective and poses another question: what do scholars who study movement which has happened get out of these types of records? In what way can dance scholars use these record types?

    The theoretical stance is semiotics and I use Ferdinand de Saussures concepts ‘signifiant’ and ‘signifié’ to orientate myself in the difference between dance which has happened and the records, which tell us something about this dance. Charles Sanders Peirce concepts ‘symbolic,’ ‘iconic’ and ‘indexical’ are used to describe the relationship between dance and record.

    The method is qualitative interviews. I have interviewed four dance scholars and the recorded interviews are the source material. The scholars have knowledge of what types of representatives of dance the records are, since they study dance which has happened through records. The interviews also answer the question related to the scholar’s perspective: what do dance scholars get out of the records when they study dance which has happened?

    Scholars who study dance which has happened often prefer moving imagery as a source. They do so because the moving image has an iconic relationship to the dance (a relationship built on likeness) and because it, like dance, is moving. There is no record which could give an absolute transferral of a movement which has happened, all types of records have their prerequisites. Nor is there a record type which is ‘better’ than another, which record is prefered depends on the scholar’s purpose of their study.

    The different record types complement each other and many scholars prefer to use several different types. Hence, this study recommends dance archives to aim for plurality of record types in their collections.

    This two year masters thesis is written in the scientific field of library- and information science. The purpose of the study is to investigate the collaboration between teachers and librarians in different types of school library organisations. Two school libraries with only the school as a target group, two integrated public- and school libraries, one school library division and one public library that provides the school with school library services has been studied. The study takes place in Uppland.

    The theoretical framework used is based on Montiel-Overall and her four models of collaboration: coordina-tion, cooperation, integrated instruction and integrated curriculum. The first research question focuses on the col-laboration between teachers and librarians based on each of the TLC-models. The second research question goes into factors that limit collaboration between librarians and teachers. The methods used are qualitative text analysis and qualitative interviews. The main focus is on the interviews. The study is based on the librarians point of view. The interviews and the text analysis are analysed together under six different subject fields based on the research questions.

    Collaboration takes place largely within the models A (coordination) and B (cooperation). Some collabora-tions conducted in the school library organisations has however components from model C (integrated instruc-tion). It is less common with deeper forms of collaborations in the result of this study. A lack of resources like time has been observed that limits the collaboration between teachers and librarians. The collaboration between teachers and librarians need to be emphasized and prioritized.

    By analysing the regulating mechanisms of state subsidies to Swedish institutions generally considered mediating “popular education” during the twentieth century, it is argued that a tension has been developed between two parallel notions of popular education. A narrower ideal popular education—emphasising non-formality and independence—has been discursively nurtured along with a broader organisational popular education, denoting the de facto institutions that have received government funding, primarily the folk high schools and study associations. It is argued that the organisational popular education is a reality in itself, spanning over border zones between, for example, non-formal and formal education. Furthermore, an argu- ment against using “popular education” as an analytical concept is put forth, since it is overly contested. Rather, it is promoted as a discursive construct that has for- med real organisational structures with their own logic, which cannot be denoted by words such as non-formal adult education.

    Interdisciplinarity is a common goal within specialized interdisciplinary organizations as well as within the academic world as a whole. Interdisciplinary research is connected with values such as a more market oriented approach, new ways of using theories and methods and a more cost efficient use of expensive research equipment. But few studies actually measure the development of organized interdisciplinary research over time.

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential effects of organizational changes in research institu- tions whose purpose is to promote interdisciplinary research collaborations..

    Using a longitudinal case study this essay measures the attempts of a Norwegian music therapy research organisation to actively induce interdisciplinary research over a period of eight years. An important part of the study is also to try common quantitative operationalizations of different types of interdisciplinarity with in a small case study. Bibliometric methods are used to visualize relations between researchers.

    Important results include findings of increased interdisciplinary activity within the new organisation thus proving the possibility to create interdisciplinary conditions thru active organisational changes. The essay also show that operationalizations used in quantitative studies may need to be adapted to specific conditions in order to effectively measure interdisciplinary relations between researchers. As with all case studies the results of this essay needs to be tested and verified in further studies.

    Abstract [en]

    This two years master’s thesis is a review and exploration of the Swedish debate concerning children’s literature from the 19th century to the present, as well as the evaluation and analysis of four adaptations of the tale Red Riding Hood. The aims are to identify how ideas and values regarding the role of children’s literature in society have developed over time and to contribute with a knowledge base for continued reflection and discussion on the subject of children’s reading and mediation of children’s literature in public libraries.

    The theory and method used in the thesis, is primarily based on the discourse analysis of Michel Foucault. I have identified four main discourses: the educational discourse, the liberation discourse, the politicized dis- course and the popular discourse. To explore the tension between contingency and permanence within the dis- cursive field I have revolved the analysis around key concepts such as ”pedagogy”, ”children” and ”childhood”. The four different adaptations of Red Riding Hood illustrate how beliefs about children and children’s reading have been revised over time. The study shows that the debate and the literature have evolved from a didactic and instrumental point of view to a more liberating and aesthetic approach. But the movement is not linear and uni- vocal. The current debates and the range of children’s literature today exhibit tendencies both of protective mo- rality, expressive and imaginative aesthetics and political awareness. The predominant view of children is still as human “becoming’s” rather than “beings”, and the value of reading literature is thus regarded as extrinsic and as a tool for language development. This continuous and ongoing educational discourse takes little interest in the children’s own ideas and opinions about books and reading. It is my conclusion that children’s libraries, as me- diators of children’s literature, have an enhanced role to play in today’s technologically based society; providing and encouraging book discussions and other literary activities where not only the literature is in focus, but the children’s own reading experiences as well.

    Abstract [en]

    Since the role of the libraries as merely a place for loans has decreased, the importance of giving the visitors a total experience has increased.

    The aim of my thesis was to investigate whether a change in the sound environment at the library of Jokkmokk could generate more satisfied visitors, whether they are borrowers or use the library for other purposes. The change in the sound environment was to be effected by means of a background sound experiment in the magazine room at the library. Action research was used as a research strategy and observations and interviews as method to collect data.

    The experiment was conducted with two selected sounds of nature: birdsong and a rippling brook. The observations and interviews were executeted in three stages: 1. Without any background sound. 2. With birdsong. 3. With the rippling brook. The result showed that over seventy percent of the interviewees were in favour of the background sounds. It is important to consider the overall impression the library conveys to the visitors.

    As a result of the study we have found some measures that can be taken to improve the sound environment at the library of Jokkmokk.

    The purpose of this two years master´s thesis in Archive, Library and Information Museum science is to examine the ideas about children and childhood which have an influence on the storytime at public libraries. The material on which this thesis is based, is a methodbook which is aimed to develop the storytimes and those picture books that are recommend in the methodbook. The theoretical points of departure are discourse analysis and childhood sociology. The concepts of being and becoming are frequently used when analyzing the methodbook. Other theoretical points of departure are the combination of narratologi, semiotics and hermeneutics, which are also used when analyzing the picture books.

    The result indicates that the storytime, recommended in the methodbook, is based on the idea of a timeless culture of childhood - where the "modern child" including the media used today - is left out. Concepts as nostalgia and pedagogy are tightly connected. The childhood as it appears in the storytime is a locked pedagogical room.

    Personal archives are a largely neglected subject in archival theory. Among the consequences of this is the absenceof any general established or formalized practices when it comes to arrangement and description. Thisstudy opposes the notion that an archival institution without formal systems of arrangement and description doesnot order and describe archives in accordance with a general conceptual framework of a correct order. Supportingitself on the anthropological theory of Mary Douglas on dirt and cleanliness, it studies the implicit notions oforder that can be found in the archival descriptions of the personal archives kept by the Swedish national archives.Several patterns where revealed by the study: among them the primacy of quantity stood out. The vaguesystem of categories based on Martin Grass description model appears only to be employed loyally where quantitiesof the particular categories are such that they constitute complete volumes, which seem to be the cardinaljustifier of categorical division within the archive. The model itself is rarely applied with orthodoxy, and itsroughness often means that the categories engage in “border clashes” over which documents belong in whichcategory. Though these are often caused and generally determined by quantities, they also reveal an internalhierarchy of relations between specific types of records and categories. Furthermore, certain categories appearsmore stable than others, and when Grass system collapses, it reveals how certain of them – based on a principleof pertinence or theme – habitually fall out of use whereas categories defined by document types appear to remainfar more stable even in smaller archives and archives with low degree of differentiation.

     The whole purpose of this essay is to see how the opportunities to demand accountability been affected by changes in the OSL. This is based on three questions. The first question is: How changes affect the OSL opportunities for accountability? The second question: to what extent, technical progress been a driving force for changes in the OSL and in what way? The third and final question is: What changes have sparked debate?

    The essay initiate with a report that konstitutionsutskottet compiled, the report was called Översyn av ändringar i offentlighets- och sekretesslagstiftningen 1995-2012. In this report konstitutionsutskottet compiles the changes implemented since the OSL entered into legal force in 2009. 53 of these changes resulted in actual changes in the law, such as new paragraphs or additions to the regulations. I examined the respective committee report for these 53 amendments thereto, and have the committee reports constituted the main source material for the essay. The methodology used for the survey of the committee reports is the document analysis.

    The results of the survey are that the strengthened secrecy to protect data relating to individuals becomes the expense of opportunities for accountability. In a fairly large extent, technological developments have meant that the need to revise and extend the protection for individuals and thereby also limit the opportunity for accountability. Technological developments have also been pushing for changes to the OSL .

    Few of these amendments leads to debate in terms of OSL, therefore, does not question the notches of OSL in especially large extent when the real restriction is actually happening. Konstitutionsutskottets report, in the beginning of the essay, however, shows a clear concern with regard to the entirety of the amendments.

    This master´s thesis in Library and Information Science examines the experiences of children who read to a dog. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the interactions between the librarian, the readingdog-handler, the child-ren and the dogs and what the benefits from the interactions might be. The aim is also to examine how the child-ren express their literacy during the readingsessions and how to develop the readingsessions at a specific library. The author follows a reading dog project for seven weeks, in collaboration with a specific school and library. Action research was used as a research strategy, and since action research is done on the basis of practice, a coll-laboration with the participating children, the librarian and the readingdog-handler was significant in this study.The theoretical framework concists of theory and concepts from the sociocultural theory developed by Ro-ger Säljö, and human-animal studies with concepts from Donna Haraway. The method used to collecet data was qualitative interviews, participant observation, logbook and tutoring. A total of 33 observations was collected, 33 short interviews were conducted and 6 tutoring meetings. Also the author, readingdog-handler and the lib-rarian kept a log for this seven week long readingdog project. A total of five third grade children participated in this study.Important results are that the children view the readingsessions as a schoolbased activity, but they would also read to a dog in their spare time. The interaction with the dog and the relationship between the child and the dog are important for the readingsessions to work well. The readingsessions have the potential to let children express and develop their literacy in several ways, though in this study literacy was expressed mainly by tradit-ional reading of printed books. The thesis also discuss to what extent the participant children are allowed to be involved in planning and developing the readingdog-sessions. All of the children participating in this study had a positive experience of the readingsessions and felt that their readingskills improved by reading to a dog.

    This master thesis is aiming to find out how school libraries work towards children in school years 1-6. The mainfocus is how the school librarians and teachers work with literature and reading. The theoretical viewpoints aremainly the sociocultural theory and the child perspective.The study was conducted with participants from five different schools in Uppsala, in the form of qualitativesemi-structured interviews. The results show that schools work with literature first and foremost in a pragmaticway, with reading-strategies and activating discussions. Very little time is spent on reading for its own sake. Thegeneral opinion is that the school libraries could – and should – be used more in the daily school work. Thelibrarians claim that they lack both time and financial resources to execute certain projects or be able to offer awider diversity of material. Finally, it is obvious that school libraries vary a lot in both ambition and resources.

    Given the increased role of bibliometric measures in research evaluation, it is striking that studies of actual changes in research practice are rare. Most studies and comments on ’a metric culture’ in academia focus on the ideological and political level, and there is a clear shortage of empirical studies that analyze how researchers handle demands for accountability in context. In adopting a mixed methods approach involving both bibliometric data and answers form questionnaires we provide an in-depth study of how researchers at the faculty of Arts at Uppsala University (Sweden) respond to the implementation of performance based research evaluation systems. Publication patterns from 2006-2013 show that journal publications, especially English-language ones, is increasing, and the proportion of peer-reviewed publications has doubled. These changes are in line with the incentives of the evaluation systems under study. Answers to the survey confirm that scholars are conscious about this development and several respondents articulate a disagreement between disciplinary norms and external demands. However, disciplinary background as well as career stage or academic age appears to have a significant influence on how individual researchers react to the instigation of evaluation systems. Finally, responses to national and local evaluation regimes are complex, localized and dependent on many factors. In-depth contextualized studies of research practices are needed in order to understand how performance based funding systems influence academic research on the ground.

    The subject of this two year Master's thesis in Library and Information Science is the information practices of illiterate immigrants in everyday life. The purpose is to examine how immigrants seek, identify, understand and value information sources and information, and how the practices have changed with their arrival in Sweden. It furthermore focuses on the barriers that illiterate immigrants meet in accessing and understanding information. It moreover investigates the strategies they use to overcome them.

    For this purpose twelve qualitative research interviews were carried out, with illiterate immigrants as well as with service providers. The theoretical concepts of the essay is information practices, which means that the information process is within a context, and information poverty, that people in different context do not have adequate and equal access to information and information sources.

    Using McKenzie's model of information practices, the essay concludes that illiterate immigrants are active in their information process, especially when they interact with information. The most commonly used information practice is to seek out and ask for help in their social network. They use service providers to explain written information. In addition to actively seeking out people to help them, they use a variety of information practices. They use Internet on their smartphones. Some of them use a translator app to translate letters and communicate with others. They use Facebook and watch TV. They also use other visual sources. Their information practices function as strategies to cope with barriers connected to illiteracy. They utilize their social network that possesses writing and reading skills to help them read and explain. Other strategies are to use numbers and to learn things by heart.

    Although the illiterate immigrants use a variety of practices and strategies, they still do not get adequate and equal access to information and therefore can be called information poor. Their social network is a resource, but it can also be a limitation. They risk lacking information about intangible things. But they do not, opposed to Chatman's theory, keep their needs concealed. One participant differed from the others in this aspect, since he expressed an unwillingness to ask. He was also troubled by his illiteracy. He perceived himself as being more limited because of it. The interpretation of this is that he lives in a more literate world than the other participants. Therefore is he able to realize what he lacks.

    It is important to give illiterate immigrants adequate and equal information. This essay thus suggests that institutions seek to adapt their information services to the practices and strategies that the group acquires and uses.

    In this thesis I have chosen to study the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions as well as the influence this methodic platform has on the work of modern archivists. This also raises the question whether the nature of the platform is in any way influenced by the attitude working professionals might have towards crowdsourcing as a legitimed working method. This investigation is based on case studies and interviews with archivists from select Swedish institutions and also the methodology of two now ongoing crowdsourcing projects.

    The theoretical framework on which this composition is based comes from the work of Gregory Asmolov and his work on crowdsourcing platforms and their functionality as tools of governing. Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) is applied to analyze how the method of crowdsourcing is utilised by archival institutions and influenced by their daily routine in conjunction with Governmentality as the chosen way of studying how these platforms might control their users.

    From the results of the performed case studies, two discourses emerged based on the view on quality concerning gathered information amongst the involved subjects. The first of these discourses places it´s trust and faith in users themselves where validity is of a lesser concern than the actual availability of information through the concept of ”wisdom of the crowds”. Discourse number two represents an alternate perspective where quality of information is of the outmost importance and requires the supervision of professionals upon the work of common users. Through the course of this study I have come to find that the use of crowdsourcing in Swedish archival institutions is mainly controlled by the archivist in charge´s attitude towards this specific working method and in a larger context also formed by the basic archival discourse, legal questions and financial matters of the last century.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper discuses three different freakshow-attractions at the amusement park Gröna Lund in Stockholm during the 20th century; two tribes from the African continent, the exhibit of people with dwarfism and all female striptease. These attractions have been examined with international and intersectional perspective aswell as their effect on the possible heritage status of the amusement park Gröna Lund and their part in creating a so-called dissonant heritage. The thesis does not examine individual freaks or the amusement often refereed to as burlesque that also was an important part of the amusement park Gröna Lund.

    By studying the amusement park Gröna Lund’s company archive at the Centre for business history in Stockholm I found the main source material for this thesis. This material consisted of pictures, commercial flyers given out at exhibitions, advertising banners and articles from various Swedish newspapers. The material has then been exposed to both textual and image analysis.

    The result is that the human attractions at Gröna Lund can, and should, be seen as a part of an international freakshow market - although influenced by social and political trends and institutions. I also argue that the amusement park, and the human attractions are a part of a dissonant heritage, a more intersectional Swedish heritage. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this two year master’s thesis was to examine how Swedish archives practically assimilated the older analog material through digitization. The thesis was focused on studying the analog digitization as a common continuous national process. The aim and focus of the study was based on questions regarding, the material selection for the digitization, the users in the digitization process and the national cooperation in the digitization of the archives. Materials used in the study where government inquiries concerning digital preservation, Swedish National Heritage Board new digital guidelines and various applications for different analog digitization projects. By highlighting the different perspectives of the analog digitization the thesis obtained a more comprehensive understranding of the pratical issues.

    The study was based on the theoretical framework of the media theorist Wolfgang Ernst and his notion of the links between technical progress, media changes and society’s adaptation of new technology. The study also used different media theoretical tools to analyze the issues on the analog digitization.

    The result of the study showed that the analog digitization was part of a bigger technical process. The understanding of the digitization was in all perceived as a general term with several technical applications and concepts. In its entirety, the national cooperation was described as flexible and dynamic as it constantly adapted to the requirements and needs of the archives. The study also found that the national digitization consistently chose material that was considered to be in high demand. Scientists and their interest were closley intertwined in the selections of the analog matieral. The study showed that the analog digitization forced the archives to more consistently study and assess their analog material. In all, the national understanding regarding the analog digitization became a process that embraced new pratical ideas and techniques.

The analysis shows how the worth and meaning of archival records and the work of archivists are constituted in a complex interplay of quasi-institutionalized orders of archival work, their associated but often conflicting regimes of worth and information, and changing local intermediary practices.     Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate how archivists, records managers and scholarly literature in the field(s) analyse how participation is discussed in the context of archives and records management, and to explore practical and theoretical implications of the disclosed discursive practices.

    Design/methodology/approach: The analysis is based on a discourse analysis of a body of archival literature and a sample of posts collected from the archival and records management blogosphere.

    Findings: The analysis shows that instead of discussing one notion of participation, the archival science literature is referring to nine different and partly conflicting types of participation from three broad perspectives: management, empowerment and technology. The discourses have also conflicting ideas of the role of engagement and enthusiasm, and of that what do the different stakeholder communities see as real options. 

    Research limitations/implications: The analysed material consists of a limited sample of mainly English language texts that may not capture all the nuances of how participation is discussed in the archival literature.

    Practical implications: A better understanding of how different claims of the benefits and threats endorsing participation in archives helps to develop effective and less contradictory forms of collaboration between different stakeholders.

    Originality/value: In spite of the popularity of the notion of participation, there little, especially critical, research on how participation is conceptualised by archives professionals and researchers.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of unsustainable community platforms from community and information sharing perspectives using Google Lively as an example. The aim is to analyse what happens when a community platform is not sustainable and explore the reasons why Lively failed or succeeded as an arena of participation and information sharing. Design/methodology/approach - The study is based on an ethnographically informed analysis of texts on Google Lively mined from the web and gathered using two small qualitative surveys. Findings - The findings show that Lively fostered the emergence of several virtual communities that outlived the platform. Shared experience, experience of crisis and a distinct identity appeared to be significant factors that seemed to contribute to the success of analysed Livelian communities. Research limitations/implications - The study is based on a convenience sample and an analysis of one virtual community platform. Practical implications - The results inform the development of community strategies for situations when a platform is closing and plans are being made for the sustained existence of the virtual community in new contexts. Originality/value - This is the first comprehensive study on Google Lively. The findings can be expected to have relevance also in the context of comparable virtual community platforms.

    This study is performed as an Archive, Library and museum master’s thesis in two years studies. The overall aim is to investigate and analyze what the term Manga means in a library and information science context. The concept of Manga has different meanings depending on whether we start from a Japanese or a Swedish context. Manga is integrated in the Japanese society while Manga often is associated with youth culture or a separate genre in Sweden. The first issue is to examine how the Manga literature lending statistics looks in Swedish public libraries in the years 2000-2011, which is illustrated through text and graphics. A dramatic increase in Manga literature lending statistics occurred 2004 which culminated in the year of 2009. From this statistics the study also investigates which genres are represented in the Swedish public libraries. This diversity of genres and subgenres in Manga literature is sharply reduced to a few genres in Swedish public libraries where romance, comedy, action, fantasy and adventure are dominant. The second question dealt with how to define and use the term Manga? I suggest that Manga can be sorted into the concepts of Manga Literature, Manga aesthetics and Manga culture with the intention of nuance and specify the subject areas content and discussion.The third issue in this examination is dealing with how Manga literature can conveniently be placed? What are the contextual components in Manga and how do they relate to each other?

    Abstract [en]

    This study investigates how tagging is being used in a new way when members of a Swedish dating site get to tag themselves in an act of self-presentation with the aim of meeting new people. In the study seven members of the dating site Mazily were interviewed about their self-presentation, tagging and identity formation there. The questions concerned how they formed their own tags, but also how they interpret and use other members' tags in their search for a potential partner.

    I have been using queer theories for this study, in order to find out what kind of norms and structures that lie behind and affect the members' behaviour on the website. My study finds that the interviewed members to a high degree reflect about both their own and other members tagging and self-presentations. Although they spend quite some time trying to analyse other people on the website they have a great sense of understanding that a person may give two very different impressions on the site and offline. Another finding is that although tagging is a very free way to present yourself, there still are structures and norms about gender, sexuality and culture that will affect members actions on the dating site.

    This study focuses on investigating the question of how gender can be made seen in already organized archives. This is done in order to provide answers to the thesis aims which is to broaden the knowledge of visualizing marginalized groups within archives, and to contribute with knowledge to the field of gender studies within Swedish archival studies. This will be achieved through a case-study framework and a document analysis where the Gender and Work project’s database and complementary documents is studied. The Gender and Work being a project aiming at collecting information regarding gender and work during the early modern period. A theoretical framework has been used where archives are understood as part of a process of power, where certain groups are given a voice whilst others are silenced. Here it is clear that visualizing can involve several steps.

    The study shows that the GaW database consists a vast use of metadata, in which gender is present, and both men and women are searchable. Therefore, the database presents a way through which gender can be visualized, by using a database. However, gender is not visualized at large. The database fails by not using a larger set of records which allows individuals to speak for themselves, and when sex is used as a search way individuals not registered as performing work cannot be located. It therefore mainly visualizes gender in relation to work. Even though the Gender and Work database do provide new insights to the field of gender and archive, there is still much to do in order to visualize gender within archives. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    The Construction of Whiteness in the Work of The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    In 1922 a eugenic research centre, The Swedish State Institute for Race Biology, was founded in Uppsala, with the purpose being to survey and classify the Swedish people according to race. The data collected was intended to make a foundation for a rational population policy aiming at improving the Nordic (Swedish) race. This race was deemed superior in comparison with the other races living in Sweden– primarily the East Baltic (Finnish) and the Lappish (Sami) race. But due to miscegenation and a depraved urban lifestyle this Nordic race was under threat and needed to be rescued.

    In the scientific practice of this eugenic institute it was the external aspects of the humans, or the phenotype that decided what race a person belonged to. A vast amount of bodily data was therefore collected―bodies were measured and hair and eye colours determined to decide what race a person belonged to. Beside these records photographical portraits of the persons examined were also taken.

    The use of photography in the scientific practice of the institute is not surprising―with the focus on how people looked it was a convenient and efficient tool. The camera could not only rapidly produce a vast amount of photographical records but was also, in this period, deemed objective and reliable―just capturing the world as it was. But in the same time it is obvious when examine the photographs that they were most biased. The portraits exemplifying the Nordic race show young, healthy good-looking persons in prosperous environments while for instance the Finnish type often was elderly, shabby men in worn out clothes, in front of poor homes and surroundings. The photographs were used to promote the idea of the Nordic race as superior―they were far from objective but permeated by ideological beliefs.
