    Abstract [en]

This thesis shows the results of an archive description over the archive of a now closed institution at UppsalaUniversity dating from 1940-1992. The institutions main function throughout the 50 years it consisted was tomonitor the University’s sports building and encourage physical activity. The limited archive made it importantto be careful when evaluating the information value. There was also a main focus on the principle of provenance. When arranging the noncurrent records from the Cabinet Archive dated from late 1990s, every record had tobe appraised for their archival value. This was time-consuming work but necessary from an economic point ofview since so much shelf space in the archive could be saved. The records could be sorted under the series principal’sofficial visits and professor installation. When comparing the two archives there were obvious benefits when creating an archive description over aclosed recorded group. By analysing all records it was possible to get a view over the archive as a whole anddetermine the record series. The Cabinet Archive which was an archive with current records made it difficult todetermine the archival arrangement of the records that did not fit in the existing archive description. Although acomplete archive description of a closed recorded group is best done with smaller archives. Archives the size ofthe Cabinet Archive is better arranged from the start where the archival description shows changes in activities. The University as a creating office for several archives is a complex organisation with frequent changes thatmakes it difficult to identify the office of origin. This was one of the many difficulties when faced with the task ofdetermining the information value of the records and to understand the originating office.
