Vetenskapshistoriedisciplinens etiska rötter: Kulturkritik, idealism och dygdelära i George Sartons kamp om begreppet humanism2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Keywords: aktör-nätverks-teori, ANT, apotekare, apotek, deprofessionalisering, förstatligande

Att materialisera (fram)tiden: Om temporalitet och modernitet i Magasin för konst, nyheter och moder2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine and analyse if it is possible to distinguish a new perception of time and temporality in the Swedish fashion magazine Magasin för konst, nyheter och moder, and in that case how it is expressed. To discover this, I have used the theories of the philosophers and historians Reinhart Koselleck and Marshall Berman. In their works they have pointed out and described how the early decades of the nineteenth century was a crucial time for our perception of the modern world, in the sense that we ever since then have experienced a gap between the past and the future where we cannot derive our expectations from our past experiences anymore. I have studied if this notion is communicated in the articles, and came to the conclusion that there is a new awareness of time articulated in the magazine. Mainly  there are three different understandings of time and temporality expressed within the magazine – first are those articles that shows a general new awareness of time in a constructive way, neither through a positive or negative perspective. Furthermore, there are also expressions for connections between the materialistic content in the magazine and the view on temporality, where the acknowledgment of a new temporality in fashion seems to also have an impact on a more ideological perception of time. Finally there are articles which portrays the discrepancy between expectation and experience as something with a negative significance for the future, but similarly puts this in a way that illuminates that the future is now something adaptable and possible to influence in a certain direction. This shows a new way of understanding how, in a Swedish nineteenth century context, material culture could affect people’s awareness of time and temporality and hence also their thoughts and outlook of the future even in more abstract issues. The upcoming becomes possible to interpret as something materialistic, and therefore also something more concrete and arguable.

Can the Author of ’Can the Subaltern Speak’ Act?: Spivaks essä i relation till ’French theory’ i USA2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyze some aspects of the historical surroundings in which Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak wrote her famous essay ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. From a historical perspective, inspired by Quentin Skinner, I examine how Spivak in a context of French theory in U.S. academy criticized Michel Foucault and defended Jacques Derrida. In the first part of my analysis I relate Spivak’s essay to the ”Foucault and Derrida debate” of the sixties and seventies. I argue that many aspects of Derrida’s early critique of Foucault, and many of the themes of that debate in general, was rhetorically repeated by Spivak in ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. In the second part of my analysis, I discuss how Foucault and Derrida in the context of U.S. academy were, rather than empirical persons, turned into common nouns well incorporated into the academic language. In this context, where Spivak appeared, I analyze how the ”notions” Foucault and Derrida was disputed. I argue that Spivak, during several years before she wrote ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”, had been trying to refute anglophone marxist and postcolonial intellectuals who criticized Derrida. These critics, including Terry Eagleton, Perry Anderson and Edward Said, had been blaming Derrida for being unhistorical, politically evasive and merely textualistic. My argument is that Spivak sought to defend Derrida towards these critics in ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. In this context, her aim was to emphasize the efficiency of Derrida’s deconstruction as a political tool for marxist, feminist and Third world intellectuals.

Medaljens baksida: Instrumentmakaren Daniel Ekström och hans efterföljare i 1700-talets Sverige1999Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with scientific instrument-making in Sweden in the 18th century with an overview of the craft in the second half of the 17th century. The main character in this book, Daniel Ekström is introduced in chapter two. His position within the Swedish scientific community is described and the attempts by the Land Survey Board and the Academy of Sciences to institutionalise his business is discussed. Ekström travelled to England and France and the transfer of technology that followed from this journey is discussed. His followers, Johan Ahl and Johan Zacharias Steinholtz and their work are described. In 1762, Ahl moved to Denmark where the geographical circle, invented by Ekström, became an important technical condition for an ambitious mapping project. In Sweden on the other hand, J. Z. Steinholtz' business ended in bankruptcy. The optical instrument-makers are also described, the most prominent being Carl Lehnberg, who, just like Ekström, became a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. In the final chapter a few comments on experimental physics and it's influence on Swedish instru-ment-making are given. Though most importantly, the failure of the attempt to establish scientific instrument-making is related to a more general change in how the sciences were regarded in Sweden around 1760.

In appendix one, a comparison is made between a reflecting telescope by Ekström and a telescope by James Short. In appendix two, a list is given over Swedish instrument-makers and preserved Swedish scientific instruments.

In appendix three, the workshops in Stockholm are displayed on a map.

God and the moral beings: A contextual study of Thomas Hobbes’s third book in Leviathan2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The question this essay sets out to answer is what role God plays in Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan, in the book “Of a Christian Common-wealth”, in relationship to humans as moral beings. The question is relevant as the religious aspects of Hobbes’s thinking cannot be ignored, although Hobbes most likely had rather secular and sceptical philosophical views. In order to answer the research question Leviathan’s “Of a Christian Common-wealth” will be compared and contrasted with two contextual works: the canonical theological document of the Anglican Church, the Thirty-Nine Articles (1571), and Presbyterian-Anglican document the Westminster Confession (1648). Also, recent scholarly works on Hobbes and more general reference works will be employed and discussed. Hobbes’s views provide a seemingly unsolvable paradox. On the one hand, God is either portrayed, or becomes by consequence of his sceptical and secular state thinking, a distant God in relationship to moral humans in “Of a Christian Common-wealth”. Also, the freedom humans seem to have in making their own moral decisions, whether based on natural and divine, or positive laws, appears to obscure God’s almightiness. On the other hand, when placing Hobbes in context, Hobbes appears to have espoused Calvinist views, with beliefs in predestination and that God is the cause of everything. Rather paradoxically it not unlikely that Hobbes espoused both the views that appear to obscure the role of God, and his more Calvinistic views.

Kloka Gubbar och Visa Gummor: den allmänna debatten kring kvacksalveri och homeopati2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Quacks, fakers and homeopath is only a few of the names to describe a quack doctor. During the beginning of the 20th century Sweden had an uprising of quack doctors which started a debate both in the parliament as well amongst the doctors. Different debate articles about the uprising problem of quack doctors started to show up in varying magazines written by the doctors who wanted to ban the quack doctors and their treatment once and for all. This essay focuses on the general debate about the quack doctors and how it proceeded, but also focuses on the court which had to judge the quack doctors depending on a law from 1683.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Standards of botanical practice in Sweden between 1850 and 1950 were set, not only in schools and universities, but also in naturalist societies and botanical exchange clubs, and were articulated in handbooks and manuals produced for schoolboys. These standards were maintained among volunteer naturalists in the environmental movement in the 1970s, long after the decline and disappearance of collecting from the curriculum. School science provides a link between the laboratory, the classroom, and the norms and practices of everyday life: between the various "insides" and "outsides" of educational and research settings.

The publication strategies of Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848): negotiating national and linguistic boundaries in chemistry2016In: Annals of Science, ISSN 0003-3790, E-ISSN 1464-505X, Vol. 73, no 2, p. 195-207Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article follows the publication strategies of the Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848). It focuses on the role of language and translation in Berzelius' efforts to strengthen his own reputation, and that of Swedish science. As an author and editor, Berzelius encouraged the translation of his own works into several languages, while endeavouring to preserve the status of Swedish as a language of scientific publication in the face of French, and increasingly German and English, dominance. Reforming the Transactions of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and launching several new scientific periodicals, Berzelius also attempted to influence the publication practices in other countries. Recent scholarship on the history of scientific publication has drawn attention to the practical difficulties of determining and getting hold of the relevant publications in one's field, the 'malleability' of the journal medium, and the common practice of reprinting and summarising papers published elsewhere. Berzelius' publication strategies highlight translation - time-consuming, unreliable and problematic in terms of authorisation and ownership - as one aspect of the wider problem of communicating across national and linguistic boundaries. Berzelius' struggles with the practicalities of communicating across borders in times of war, the choice of language and its consequences, and national standards of publication, demonstrate the importance of a transnational perspective on the history of scientific publication.

    Abstract [en]

This article delineates a strong continuity, particularly in terms of personnel, between interwar domestic population policies and Sweden’s postwar participation in international and transnational population-control programs. It argues that Swedish engagement in population control and family planning in the emerging Third World, and particularly in South Asia, was motivated by the conviction that poverty and underdevelopment must be attacked on several fronts simultaneously, with population control being one of the most important. In its first bilateral aid programs Sweden would prioritize the promotion of birth control primarily because it was still too controversial to be promoted multilaterally, not least for religious reasons; and because Swedish experts were regarded as especially liberal, rational, and secularized. Sterilization expertise played no decisive part in this continuity. When first establishing themselves in South Asia, Swedish experts would recommend the rhythm method and other contraceptive methods that depended on self-control.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the mutual life project of Signe (1896-1988) and Axel Höjer (1890-1974), a married couple who were key actors in the construction of the Swedish welfare state. It emphasises the ways in which they went about asserting a special public health expertise in different contexts. As starting points I take the malleability of the concept folkhälsa (people’s health or population health) and the centrality of expertise in the governance of modern societies. Theoretical concepts such as gender, policy transfer, biopower and governmentality are central to the analysis.

The dissertation includes three parts. The first part investigates how the Höjers agreed to coordinate their work and how they, with reference to ideas picked up in France and England at the end of World War I, attempted to reform mother and child health care in Sweden. Their strategies where rhetorical but also practical, using Hagalund outside Stockholm as their experimental ground.

The second part investigates, firstly, how Axel Höjer, as General-Director of the Medical Board of Sweden (1935-52) asserted a sociomedical expertise, integrating the emerging social sciences and universalist views on the organisation of the welfare state into the realm of medicine, in order to launch ideas of a thorough reorganisation and expansion of the Swedish health care system. His focus was on preventive medicine and health care, with the complete physical, mental and social health of the whole population as an explicit goal. Secondly, it explores how Signe Höjer at the same time tried to launch ideas on health and wellbeing as a social politician and a public committee member. She also tried to define family policy as a specific policy area. However, despite her training as a nurse and a social worker, she was largely confined to asserting a particularly ”female” expertise, which made her position rather ambiguous in terms of authority.

The third part investigates how the Höjers, in the 1950s and 60s, worked with international health, Axel mainly for the WHO in India and Ghana, Signe as a policy entrepreneur, primarily in the fields of childcare and family planning. My findings partly confirm theories that see development aid as an extension of domestic social policy, but they challenge the view of aid as a simple one-way process. I demonstrate how the Höjers at least tried to adapt their projects abroad to meet local circumstances, and also show how they brought lessons from the third world to a domestic public. In the latter case they did not primarily act as experts of Swedish-style social policy, but as experts on the developing countries and on development aid.

Despotism och erotik: kvinnan och religion i Montesquieus Persiska brev2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how, in Montesquieu’s Persian Letters (1721), religion and religious structures are presented to influence women’s position in French society.

In Persian Letters Montesquieu presents a dogmatic religious life, which proceed from a literal interpretation of the bible. Such a reading raises critical questions concerning the nature of women, and subsequently places man over woman. Persian Letters show how this male dominance gets institutionalized in marriage. The religious life depicted is also distinguished by a non-genuine religious conviction and by acts which take on a simulation form. The compliance with the religious order has little to do with religious conviction and more to do with fear of punishment and social stigma. Montesquieu also shows how Christianity can be said to battle against human nature and especially her sexual passion. Montesquieu calls the divine origin of the bible into question, and instead suggests it was written by human hand. Subsequently, by means of rational thinking, a humanist perspective and a utilitarian principle, he questions a world order founded on a dogmatic interpretation of the bible.

Fear as a central part of the religious life, the subjects complete subordination to the religious structures, the suppression of the human passions and simulating modes of actions are all central parts in what Montesquieu calls despotic structures. In Persian Letters he exposes parallels between religious despotism, political despotism and despotic family life.

Montesquieu further links women’s situation directly with the political life. Within the family, Montesquieu tells us, citizens first developed a relationship to power, and power structures. These experiences later come to influence the individual’s behaviour in society, and constitute the foundation for the political life.

Land, du välsignade: Om skolans sångböcker och vad de säger om Sverige, svenskhet och omvärlden2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A shared yearning for discoveries: Sven Hedin and the circulation of curiosity in the early twentieth century2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns how a sense of curiosity, a yearning for knowing the unknown, was circulated and cultivated through practices of exploration in the early twentieth century. My empirical focal point is the Swedish explorer Sven Hedin. He undertook four expeditions to Asia between 1893 and 1935, and became influential in international geography as well as a European celebrity. His books, articles and lectures, for example “My Life as an Explorer” (1925), were best sellers. There was a keen interest in scientific expeditions and explorers in the early 20th century and I ask how curiosity was a way to invite the audience to these endeavors. Emotions of curiosity were crucial for enrolling the public, teaching them to feel like discoverers. The paper thus traces the historical construction of a modern desire to see the world in an exploratory mode. I view emotions as collectively cultivated. Indeed, my methodological claim is that publications and popular presentations were among the arenas where feelings were circulated and emotional communities shaped. The paper draws on research about the cultural and historical construction of emotions. Albeit bodily phenomena, emotions like curiosity are produced, suppressed and cultivated socially. Research in STS has created far-reaching insights into how knowledge circulates. The paper brings together this research with discussions on emotions and explores the travel and circulation of curiosity as a scientific emotion.
