Rätten till integritet: En PM om integritet i personarkiv, genom förteckning av Holger Benettssons samling English Title2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this PM I will write about how my list work of Holger Benettsson’s collection preceded and what difficulties I had to consider. I will also discuss personal integrity and secretes in personal archives.

The archive institution told me that I should use Martin Grass archive schedule to make the list work of Benettsson’s collection. One of the problems was that Grass thought that it was not useful that only two or three of the headlines were used. In the case of the archive schedule only two of the headlines were used. This collection was not about Benettsson himself but mostly about the organizations he has been involved in like Radio Voice of the Gospel, and in a project concerning Tao Fong Shan in Hong Kong.

The PM contains a discussion about the personal integrity and secrecy in documents. There is one example of that the government opened up one closed archive and a commission got opportunity to look into it. The commission then used it in a way which may raise questions about the reliability of archives and archivists.

Talande ord: En jämförande studie av taggar och kontrollerade ämnesord för indexering av skönlitteratur2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

How do you summarize the content of a fictional work, let’s say

Lord of the Rings, into a few "telling" words that may represent it? This master’s thesis is a comparative study of how library users’ freely chosen tags/keywords deviate from controlled vocabulary made by professional indexers when representing fiction. The thesis answers four main questions:

 Do the tags that the library users give fictional works correspond to the categories used in professional indexing in Sweden?

 Do the tags follow the standards for vocabulary, semantics and syntax used when indexing professionally?

 Do the tags add something to document representations?

 Are there differences between the tags used for adult fiction and the tags used for children’s literature?

With a starting point in indexing theories of Frederick W. Lancaster, Annelise Pejtersen, and the semiotic theory of the indexing process of Jens-Erik Mai, 383 tags from totally 70 fictional works are analyzed. The tags come from the online catalogue of Umeå public library, accessible through the website www.minabibliotek.se.

The results show tendencies of the tags corresponding to a great extent with categories used in the controlled vocabulary

Att indexera skönlitteratur (Indexing fictional works). However, some tags form a separate category, which may be described as a Reading experience- category. The tags also add abstract terms to the online catalogue.

    Abstract [en]

The history of religions in the faculty of arts is descendent from the faculty of theology. The department of history of religion inUppsalagot its first chair in 1948, and the department ceased to exist at 1994 when it devolved to the Faculty of Theology. The archive was incorporated within the archive of the faculty of theology, and contained protocols, directories, essays, and agent arranged remains. About half of the archive consisted of documents which required in-depth assessment. This was where the obvious problems emerged when organizing the records –raising questions about fruitful approach and implications of archival appraisal.

The discussion led to insights about the power of archivist in the process, and the crucial meaning of underlying thoughts that govern what information will be available in the archive. The analysis is focusing on what to preserve rather then what to discard, leading to conclusions that advocate awareness of the implications of the process. Documentation of underlying thoughts and consciously made choices facilitates a fruitful process of appraisal.

Knowledge Organisation and Contemporary Art: Cataloguing Practices in two Libraries in Sweden, Umeå universitetsbibliotek and Konstbiblioteket2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis examines the cataloguing practices of two art libraries in Sweden in relation to contemporary art. The aim of this study is to show how classification systems and other forms of controlled vocabulary correspond to contemporary art and reveal the factors that influence the everyday practice of cataloguing.

The qualitative methods of semi-structured interviews and an analysis of bibliographic records have been used for the purposes of this study. The study is based on domain analysis as conceived by Hjørland and Albrechtsen and some concepts and principles of Knowledge Organisation in the field of Library and Information Science.

A total of three interviews of cataloguers has proved that perceptions concerning classification and subject indexing differ among cataloguers and cataloguing practices depend on local policies concerning acquisition, shelving and user perspectives, but also each library’s resources and the institutional context (academic vs museum). Through the analysis of eleven bibliographic records, no consistent pattern has been detected, in relation to indexing and classification. The libraries do not use special systems for subject analysis. The classifications provided by universal systems have been considered insufficient to express all the concepts found in documents. The use of subject headings is, therefore, important and complements the process of subject analysis. The classification systems and subject headings lists analysed include the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), the Swedish Sveriges Allmänna Biblioteksförenings Klassifikationssystem (SAB) and the Svenska ämnesord (SAO). This is a two-year master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse: An investigation into policies of long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repositories2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the purpose to investigate policies within long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repository, this two year's master thesis was conducted through a qualitative study with quantitative overtures. The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy.

The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation.

The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.

Representationer av migranter inom biblioteks- och informationsvetenskaplig forskning: En textanalys utifrån kritiska ras- och vithetsstudier och intersektionell teori2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay has been to examine representations of immigrants in contemporary library and information science research in a Scandinavian context. By analyzing nine articles from the past decade we examine the perceptions that exist in the concepts of multiculturalism, culture, race, ethnicity, religion, gender and whiteness and what role and importance the library as a place is assigned in relation to immigrants as a user group. Our study consists of a qualitative text analysis, a critical oriented close reading method based on critical race and whiteness studies and intersectional theory. We have, with the help of Sara Ahmed´s theories of hegemonic whiteness, demonstrated how multiculturalism is partly presented as something desirable and good, partly as something potentially threatening.

The discourse of multiculturalism can be said to express the notions of the other, which in the source material manifests itself by ascribing otherness to immigrants. We have, for example, examined how ethnical and cultural differences are highlighted by a separation of East and West, the library’s educational and assisting role in relation to immigrants as a user group as well as representations of whiteness, gender and clothes. In the analysis we point to a number of complex and paradoxical representations of multiculturalism and immigrants in earlier studies of the public library. With this study we wish to encourage further user studies to nuance these representations. The study is a two-year Master’s thesis in Library and Information Science written at Uppsala University.

How to claim knowledge: The use of information in the lifeworld of the educational context2003In: ERDSA (Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia) Annual Conference Proceedings, (Book of refereed proceedings), 2003, p. 9-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Using a small body of empirical data concerning the types of information students

handle, this paper inquires into the problematic of knowledge creation, artifacts of

knowledge, and the possible role of examination as a negative factor in students’ reflective

achievements. Habermas’ theory of communicative action is proposed as the theoretical

framework for analyzing the educational environment seen as a lifeworld. From the observed

fact that types of information students themselves produce (papers, essays, lecture notes,

master theses, etc.) are hardly mentioned as information they say they handle, the tentative

conclusion is drawn that these missing types are systematically excluded. The theoretical

framework provides an explanation for this state of affairs. The overall goal of higher

education is to increase knowledge in a particular field. In teaching, however, this goal is

dealt with in a training manner, clearly manifest in the examination process. Therefore, the

action orientations of the students will differ more or less from the overall goal. Claims of

validity connected with knowledge turn in a normative direction in action situations oriented

towards examination. Since information is the link anchoring claims of validity, students

become inclined to exclude the artifacts of their own knowledge creation. The latter are not

viewed as dealing with information linking the claims connected with the overall goal of

increasing ‘real’ knowledge, instead being taken as constituting the links for normative

claims. The paper also proposes certain means in line with the theory for improving this state

    of affairs.

Proceedings / [ed] Fabio Crestani, Ian Ruthven, Berlin: Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2005, p. 119-140Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes a concept of information defined as semantic links to a meaning external to the information, located in the structure of the lifeworld. In building upon Habermas Theory of Communicative Action, the progress of linguistically coordinated action in the lifeworld through speech acts connected with claims of validity is briefly described. The claim is put for ward that the meaning of a statement or an artefact can only be determined through communicative action since all information is semantically contex tualized in the lifeworld, the basic structure of society within which the repro duction of world views and cultural traditions occurs. However, communicative rationality shapes social institutions into a system of growing complexity that exerts pressure on the lifeworld, increasing the need for communicative action. The function of facilitating the evaluation of validity claims makes access to information necessary for consensus formation and action coordination, thereby emphasizing the significance of IS. The paper presents a model of contextualized praxis as it concludes that information specialists must act communicatively.

Den falska nyckeln: Stångbett för skolridning - historia, terminologi, katalogisering2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The art of riding is a fugitive art, which signifies that the means available for documentation of performances are insufficient, and that the equipment used by the old masters are important clues for the understanding of their art. The most specialized tool used for riding is the bit, in particular the curb. As museum catalogues become accessible to the public through the internet, riders will look for information about bits. It is then important that the information provided in the catalogues is valid not just for the curator, archaeologist or art historian, but also for the rider. In this paper, I add context to the bits by explaining two opposing philosophies of bitting, and how they affect the design of the bits. This is followed by a brief history of the art of riding and how the bits have evolved since the 16’th century. I then proceed to describe the function of the bit, and suggest a terminology in Swedish to use when describing bits in museum catalogues. The paper ends with some reflections on writing catalogue texts and photographing bits.

    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with an object donated by a group of members of the public to the Royal Armoury in Stockholm, Sweden. The donators claimed to own a horse bit that had been used by King Gustav II Adolf's mount in the battle of Lützen, where the King was killed. The bit was a gift to the donators' ancestor, the farmer and politician Petter Jönsson, from the King of Sweden, Oscar I, in the 1850's. In this paper, the donated bit is examined and found unlikely to be the bit used at Lützen. The examination also revealed that the bit now worn by the horse in its display is a prop, included in the group of objects in the 19th century, and that the original bit probably was lost in a fire in 1648. The examination also raises questions on why this bit was considered a valuable gift, what consequences the gift transaction of the bit had for giver and reviever. It ends with a discussion about the donated bit and the bit in the display, and their roles at the museum in the future.

Kompetent för specialsamlingar: Utbildningsmöjligheter för studenter och kompetensutveckling för verksamma vid folkbibliotek2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to compare international ideal competencies for Special Collections librarianship to the possibility to acquire these competencies as a student of library education or as a professional librarian with the care of special collections in a public library in Sweden today. The questions posed are: How are international ideal competencies concerning special collections looked upon in Swedish public libraries? How can students or professional librarians today acquire competences necessary for the work at hand in special collections? Suggested in this thesis is to emphasize the importance of understanding that handling special collections demands other skills and belongs to other practices than ordinary work in a public library. The major discrepancy with international ideal competencies consists in the lack of ways for education in the field of special collections for both students and professional librarians in Sweden today.

    Abstract [en]

Archives can tell us many things about the past. The purpose of this guide is to facilitate the work of those who want to know more about the documents associated with death sentences. The guide gives a brief introduction to the history of the death penalty in Swedish legal history, to the legal process and to the judicial authorities. It also adresses the relationship between the various bodies and the relationship between law and jurisprudence. The guide presents primarily the archives of Nedre justitierevisionen and of Svea hovrätt. The guide presents what kind of information can be found and provides guidance as to how these documents are sought. Through a case study, we learn that records can give answers to many questions regarding a person sentenced to death.
