    Abstract [en]

    In November 2008, the National Library of Sweden decided to change their standard classification system from the Swedish Library Classification System (SAB) to the american Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). One of the main reasons to this transition was the assumption of gaining the possibility to exchange and import catalogue posts by using an outspread international classification system. Throughout the years, it has been disputed whether DDC’s treatment of music has been the most suitable. The system has been criticized for being biased in favor of Western music and not being updated with the growth of new music. The purpose of this study is to examine the opinions among librarians connected to the music area on how this classification transition went, and how it has affected their work. The primary questions concerned with this study are if the interviewees perceive that there is a problem by using DDC for music and if so, how? Additionally, does this change also affect the library users, or is it only the librarians? The method I am using to examine these questions is qualitative interviews based on Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkmann’s thoughts in their book Den kvalitativa forskningsintervjun. The theories that will be used for this thesis are theories concerning functional requirements of classification systems. The results show that the interviewees’ opinions are that DDC’s notation tends to be long, which affects the usability of the system. The interviewees’ perception is that DDC is also lacking in its treatment regarding musical recordings and the popular music area. One of the main reasons for this shortage is because there is basically no other library outside of Sweden that is classifying such material with DDC, which means that the information exchange with countries abroad has so far been rather exiguous.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the cultural place and status of video and computer games in the Swedish public library. Using works on popular culture and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study employs quantitative methods, as well as textual analysis, to analyze the results of an online questionnaire with 19 questions focusing on selection criteria, shelf placement, perceived competence, as well as reasoning for having or not having these games in the library. 286 out of the 440 libraries contacted is participating in the study, and the libraries consist exclusively of public libraries in Sweden that are found in the database of the Royal Library.

    The results of this study show that a larger number of libraries than previously indicated have started to provide electronic games to their patrons. At the same time, patterns in the data and comments suggests that these games in many cases still do not enjoy the same level of cultural recognition as other media. Indicative of this is the way most libraries seem to focus on the medium being exclusively for their young patrons, with seem-ingly very little in the way of investment for adults. Also relevant is selection process being highly influenced by the type and amount of violence in the games, regardless of the level of competence and knowledge about games among library staff. These findings relate to and expand upon previous studies regarding electronic games, cul-ture and the public library. This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this two years master's thesis is to examine the attitudes amongst archivists of moving images towards the digital transition in the field of film/moving images. The attitudes within the field of film archivists towards digital technology and the digital transition have consequences for the ways in which digital technology is used for access, preservation, restoration and projection of film within archives of film or moving images.

    The theoretical and methodological foundation is inspired by Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse theory. A number of articles from the film/moving image archival journals Journal of Film Preservation and The Moving Image are analysed.

    The field of archives of film and moving images is proposed to form an order of discourse, as used in the theory of critical discourse. This order is challenged by the advent of the digital. Structures and typical patterns of the discourses within the film archive world are described and restructuring tendencies are stressed. Giovanna Fossati’s From grain to pixel is used as a valuable source, above all for its background on film theory and archival practice. Like the work of Fossati this analysis illustrates how different ontological assumptions on film are reflected in different attitudes towards digital technology.

    The study also makes clear how the archival order of discourse is based on the materiality of the film artefact. Concepts like originality and authenticity are tied to this material artefact. A paradigm shift from artefact to disembodied content is proposed in the articles and is even seen as inevitable, but the digital transition is also described as forming a threat to the existing activities in the field of film archiving and to the analogue film.

    The digital transition leads to a discussion of the identity of the film archive and attempts to define the core of it. The museum, the library and the archive are used in the articles as concepts to advocate mediation, access or preservation. Digital technology is associated with broader and increased access to collections held in film archives and is seen as a possibility to facilitate the access to the collections for scholars and the public and contributing to an enriched film culture. This view is contrasted to a more sceptical standpoint that advocates the authentic film experience defined by the dark room, the group experience and the projection of analogue film or a presentation mediated by the film museum.

    This is a two years master’s thesis that studies five libraries. The purpose with the paper was to look at a specific material and study how it expresses itself around the architecture of the buildings, an if the descriptions were different depending on the library, public library or university library. 

    The conclusion is that the ways of describing the library buildings have varied; depending on one part time and one part evolution. The way library buildings look and have been used has changed over time also, and as well how people perceive and talk, or in this case write about them.

    Abstract [en]

    The Swedish geographer Gerd Enequist (1903-1989) left behind great amounts of private and work material when she passed away. This was donated to the University Library of Uppsala, Carolina Rediviva, in three different accessions. This resulted in three different record. The subject of this report is the progress of assembling these record into one complete record.

    The registering led to many important decisions such as the role of provenance and the relation of private and public documents. Above all the special nature of personal archives have been a topic of discussion. Personal archives separate themselves from public records and therefore demand a different strategy of listing. The width of kinds of material and the mixture of private and public records are important qualities that differ them from public records.

    The report is initiated with an introduction of Enequist, followed by a description of the three accessions. In the second part of the report the work with recording the archive is accounted for including a description of the headings of the record. Thereafter the problems encountered during the work are described and discussed. The report is completed with a short proposal of the research values of the archive.

    This essay aims to report on the process of our documentation of art objects in the care of Smålands nation in Uppsala as a part of our education in museology and cultural heritage studies. The nation has a long history and our documentation shows many valuable objects reflecting this. The care of these objects is substandard and in great need of change. Our work process has involved photography and research about each object, the information has then been registered in our catalogue. The documentation has, besides the catalogue, generated a plan for future management and storage of the collection. We hope that this documentation has, besides the catalogue, generated a plan for future management and storage of the collection. We hope that this documentation, in addition to knowledge about preventive conservation, will result in a change of attitude towards the cultural heritage of the nation.

    Abstract [en]

    The thesis investigates how Uppsala University student nations steward their cultural heritage. The survey targets how student nations manage their cultural heritage, what financial priority they give it, their attitude towards it, and their awareness of it.A qualitative study of semi-structured interviews with representatives from 11 out of 13 student nations in Uppsala was implemented. The theoretical framework is based on the theory of David Lowenthal on the importance of cultural heritage, Susan Pearce’s theory on collecting, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural capital. To investigate the importance of cultural objects theories by Ivo Maroević, Annette Weiner, and Igor Kopytoff was applied.The survey shows that stewardship of cultural heritage at Uppsala student nations is poor and in need of reform. The survey also shows that the status of the nations’ antiquarians and other responsible officers is low and that antiquarians feel neglected in the priorities of the nation's financial plans. The thesis suggests collaboration between the student nations and Uppsala University as a solution to these problems. This two years master’s thesis could serve as a point of departure for such an initiative.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with this thesis was to apply a critical discourse analyses connected to a gender theory on the Swedish subject headings (SAO) to find a hierarchical order expressed by the choice of words. The thesis shows how gender discourses are practiced in the Swedish subject headings and suggests a change in the list. To examine this list I asked some questions: does SAO express a male norm? Can I find any gender based power relations in SAO? How does a gender discourse express it self in SAO?

    To examine the list Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis has been used, also Michel Foucault's ideas about discourses. To the discourse analysis Yvonne Hirdman's gender theories have been connected. To suggest changes I've used theories by Maud Eduards. The subject headings examined were picked from the royal library's webpage; this method has been used to get access to the laest version of the list.

    An overwhelming majority of the examined words showed a male norm and a gender discourse that expresses a female subordination and gender inequality. The inner discourses of the list affect the social context, this in turn affects how the user think, interpret and create new words. At the end of the work changes of the subject headings are given in which both male and female terms are subordinated, this to show the male, not as an universal subject, but a gender and by that eliminate a gender based hierarchy.

    This memo discusses and problematizes the work of organizing and cataloging the archive of the Environmental Advisory Council.The archive mainly consists of records concerning meetings which the Environmental Advisory Council has participated in, but also records concerning different tasks of the council and a few records concerning the coun-cil itself.The overriding problem, which is discussed in the final part of this memo, is the lacking knowledge about the creator of the archive and the creation of the archive itself and how this effects the work of ordering and catalog-ing.     Abstract [en]

    The focus of this two year master’s thesis in Library- and Information science is the study of two Swedish Public Library buildings with the examples Lomma and Halmstad. The main goal and purpose of the thesis is to try to uncover which views and values of the public library are expressed in the examined libraries; and to what extent these views manifests are shown in its architecture.

    The theoretical framework is based on Raymond Williams’s cultural concepts of effective, dominant culture and the two extremities of this culture, called residual and emergent cultures. A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place. The study also uses a historical background of Swedish Public Library Buildings.

    By close reading and textual analyses, the empirical study focuses on the municipalities’ documents surrounding the building of the library buildings in Lomma and Halmstad. The architectural perspective is studied through the architects own documents and architectural journals discussing the built Library Buildings.

    Results show that the technological advances of the time these libraries were built has put them in a position of change, which also is visible in the architecture. The libraries in Lomma and Halmstad function as civic icons of the community and the architecture is very dependent of the places where they are situated. The expressions of the two libraries differ in details but the overall result show that the values exhibited behind the building of the examined libraries is a part of a historical residual culture, functioning as effective and dominant.

    The conclusion of the thesis is that the expression of the architecture is however a part of an emergent culture. The buildings aim to comprise the values and display the diverse causes in its architecture. The buildings seek to manifest the ideal activity and working of the modern Public Library.

    Abstract [en]

    This two years master’s thesis takes interest in the concept of marketing related to the Children’s Library. The purposes have been to investigate the perception of marketing among a few librarians working at the Children’s Library in the Swedish region of Halland and further to analyse their perception of marketing in the daily work at the library. Eventually to analyse the consequences of these librarians approach to marketing related to their perception of the library’s mission. The Regional aspect of the survey is due to the 2011 celebrated report about marketing the library.

    The theoretical framework is twofold, the marketing mix is used to understand what at the library could be used in marketing. The work of the Danish scholars Henrik Jochumsen och Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen are used to understand the different functions of the library. Their theory present the library’s four different func-tions illustrated as "spaces". The spaces are the inspiration space, the learning space, the meeting space and the performative space. By those means the librarians perception of marketing in their everyday work have been analysed. The method used is qualitative, semi-structured interviews.

    Results show that the majority of the librarians preferred the vague word "visibility" to marketing. The con-cept of marketing was more seen as something communicated to users by posters and leaflets. When asked about interpersonal relations, accessibility and communication the librarians saw these concepts as important thought not obviously related to marketing. The spaces of inspiration and performance were more strongly connected to marketing than the learning space and meeting space. There is an urgent need to discuss the concept of market-ing in relation to the role of the library. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this essay was first and foremost to find out the problems that exist around user education in a university library and the opportunities that exist for university librarians to improve their work with students. My method of use was qualitative and more precise qualitative interviews. By interviewing five teaching librarians with five different subject specializations, I wanted to get an an-swer to what they teach when they meet the students and how they view their teaching. Responses resulted then in an analysis using Christine Bruce's theory of information literacy and Carol C. Kuhlthaus theory of librarian roles and her theory of information retrieval process. In the survey and analysis section, I describe informants' background, teaching approach, their thoughts about education and the problems and opportunities they see with user education. What I mainly discuss in my analysis is the importance of understanding the information retrieval process, that IT competence is not the same as information literacy and the role university librarians can take in the information retrieval process. The survey results show, among other things, that many students do not see the benefits of user education, the contact between the department and the library is dependent on personal relationships and that teaching librarians (my informants) are ill-informed about students' prior knowledge. In the final discussion, focused on problems and opportunities, I write about how education could be more interesting if librarians were able to strengthen their educational foundation and thus self-esteem in situation surrounding teaching. I also write about the contact between the department and the library, how it needs to be strengthen so that it does not rely on personal relationships. Through an improved contact librarians would also be a more natural part of stu-dents' education. This is a two years master’s thesis.

    The electronic music studio ”Elektronmusikstudion” (EMS) inStockholm was initiated in 1963. It has had several different managers throughout the years. EMS soon became a rather costly project. Furthermore there have been several conflicts among staff and users wich has contributed to EMS fairly turbulent history. One main conflict concerns the issue wether EMS should be a research facility or a studio for composers. The many different managers of EMS have contributed to a rather unstructured filing of records. To facilitate the understanding of the documents in this archive, and because there is very little written about EMS history, I’ve included a rather comprehensive description of EMS organizational history.

    The subject of this one year master’s thesis is to describe and examine difficulties I’ve encountered in the archival process. My main issues comprise the organization and separation of some of the documents, especially those concerning the conception and organization of EMS and also the abundant technical documentation. Also the question of office of origin has been a concern.

    On the Use of Bibliometrics for Domain Analysis: A study of the Academic Field of Political Science in Europe2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The academic field of political science in Europe is studied in this thesis which examines the application of bibliometrics for domain analysis. It takes its point of departure in the domain analytic approach outlined by Birger Hjørland and Hanne Albrechtsen, which claims the study of domains as central for information specialists to be able to identify information needs in their fields of practice. Three features of the domain were studied by the use of bibliometric methods. Data was extracted from the Web of Science. Impact Factor was used to select 50 journals from each of the years 1999, 2004 and 2009. Only items published by authors with European addresses were included. Co-word analysis was used to study topics within the discipline and several kinds of citation analyses were conducted to examine citation patterns of the domain. Lastly core journals, authors and works were identified by the use of citation analysis and co-citation maps were drawn for the analyses.Several subfields within the domain, as well as some differences in citation patterns of the subfields, were possible to distinguish. The domain showed to be multifaceted, yet specific European research areas were identified. Some significant changes of the citation patterns were apparent between 1999 and 2009. In 2009 there were more references per article, journal articles were cited to a higher degree, relatively older publications were cited to a greater extent and the most cited journals received a larger share of the total amount of citations.The existence of a specific European domain within political science is discussed as well as the diverse characteristics of the subfields and their implications for the bibliometric methods. Finally suggestions are presented of how bibliometrics can be used for domain analysis within library and information science as well as by information service institutions.This paper is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this two-year master´s thesis is to examine the opinion on bibliotherapy in Sweden of some potential bibliotherapists. Eight qualitative interviews were made with informants with different occupational backgrounds. Questions asked were: Who can consider working with bibliotherapy and in what way? Which requirements are needed? Which are the benefits from bibliotherapy, according to the informants? What could be the task of the library and the librarians? Theories used were narratology, conversational therapy and the bibliotherapeutic process.

    The study shows that all of the informants consider the bibliotherapeutic conversation to be important. Those who may consider working with interactive bibliotherapy, are mainly those with a background in social work. Most of them wish to cooperate with medical staff or adequate organization. All of the librarians consider themselves to have enough knowledge to be able to find adequate bibliotherapeutic material. What the informants require if they were to work with bibliotherapy, are education, some personal traits, time and space. The task of the library and the librarian could be several, including personal development and problem solving among students, patients and library visitors.

    Abstract [en]

    This master's thesis studies Utländska biblioteket, a 19th century foreign literature subscription library in Karlskrona, Sweden. The aim of the thesis is to investigate Utländska biblioteket between 1835–1864.

    The material consists primarily of primary sources from the archive of Utländska biblioteket. The main primary sources are the library's accounts book, its minutes, and two book catalogs. Using analytical tools from Jürgen Habermas, feminist criticism of his ideas and from Pierre Bourdieu, as well as results from previous research on older library forms and female organization in the 19th century, the thesis answers questions relating to the library as a society, its members and its book collection.

    The investigation shows that Utländska biblioteket was a subscription library as well as a book circle. Based on its regulations, it should be viewed as a sort of public sphere, but in reality Utländska biblioteket was an exclusive group, consisting of a socially homogenous group of people who in large extent knew each other. Its members were in large part female and aristocratic. The reading of foreign literature and the focus on quality, can be viewed as an act of distinction.

    Utländska biblioteket was, compared to other similar libraries, unusual primarily because of its large female membership. This is in the thesis explained through the viewing of the library as a female organization, where the male members in part play a role as acting agents in the library's contact with for example book dealers. Also, the book collection shows proof of a certain female subject interest. Based on these facts, Utländska biblioteket can be viewed as a female counter public, where women created a space for themselves where they, through the literature and through the membership in a society, could reflect on their identities, as well as make claims on what a woman was and could do.

    This master's thesis in Library and Information Science examines how the genre division of the horror fictionis constructed at the children and youth department of a library by studying subject headings of the titles.The aim is to examine what is included in the genre, in the two labelings called vampire and nail-biter/spine-chiller, what separates them, and what difference there is between children and youth thrillers/horror fiction. Also the cover designs and how readers portray these books are studied. The study is made in order to develop the knowledge of the genre to help librarians and borrowers. The great popularity of the genre among borrowers and people in general, and the importance of having knowledge of things that borrowers are interested in, are the motivation of performing the study. The method is a case study and conducted with and based on genre theory which shows how a genre is defined, how it can be divided and what conventions there are for the horror fiction in particular. Discourse analysis helps to see in between what frames the thriller is constructed, and how these elements subdivide the genre and influence it and those who encounter it, library borrowers and librarians. Di-scourse analysis also examines the standards of the thriller.The analysis showed that the discourse of horror fiction includes both the expected features, in terms ofgenre conventions, such as ghosts and vampires, and more commonplace such as sisters. The differences and similarities of these parts in the genre were discussed and compared in the light of discourse analysis and genre theory in order to reveal how these constructions might influence the readers and the borrowers. The major conc-lusions of the study is that the encounter between the unexpected and menacing, and the everyday life is what makes the thriller frightening, now as in history, and so it follows its genre conventions. The discourse of the hor-ror fiction standards are difficult to influence by being expected of borrowers and otherwise they are not thrillers. The study has shown that certain subjects recur more often than other which may affect the borrower in its per-ception of the genre. The genre division helps giving the borrower different kinds of frights and experiences. The joint is that the supernatural is present in the whole genre and convey feelings of excitement and fear which is the most important representative of the genre.     The column ”Fråga bibliotekarien” by Jenny Lindh is published in Dagens Nyheter, and is a popular culture work wich is read by a broad audience. This work examines how Lindh relates to established stereotypes of female librarians, and her position on the matter. Lindhs work is new in that she is a working librarian herself, and the question to be answered by this master thesis is whether or not her narrative loosens up, and breaks down, established stereotype images of the librarian.

    The source material is Lindhs work ”Fråga bibliotekarien”, published in Dagens Nyheter. The analysis is made on 171 pieces, which are answers to the questions of readers. A method of discourse analysis is used, focusing on categorized content and in some cases form. The categorized elements follows previous published sterotypes of the female librarian. Theory of language for narrative creation and post-modernity has been used in the analysis of the material. Further, the humor and irony used in the work is discussed and it is shown how Lindh uses these narrative tools to both enhance and ridicule the sterotype images of the female librarian.

    This master thesis come to the conclusion that Lindh is very well aware of the various stereotypes that exists regarding her profession, and that she uses these. But also that the total ensemble of her work breaks down these images and shows how impossible they are as a representation of the female librarian. Finally, she adds a new narrative, in connection with post-modernity, where she creates an identity of the librarian built upon contradictary stereotypes of old, with added display of professional competence within library and information science.

    Abstract [en]

    Information overload is a popular term intimately associated with the information society in which we are now thought to live. This two-year master’s thesis explores perceptions and experiences of this phenomenon through a quantitative study of two groups of academics; on the one hand, academically active information specialists, and on the other, active academics in general.

    The theoretical framework for this study is based on Orrin E. Klapp’s notion of ‘meaning lag’ and Luciano Floridi’s concept of ‘infosphere’, to provide a context for discussing how and why information overload might develop. The relationship between information overload and ‘information literacy’ is another important point explored as part of this discussion.

    An international, web-based survey directed at information specialists as well as general academics reveals that information overload is a very common experience for people active in academic settings. A number of statistics are presented regarding how, when and where information overload is usually experienced, as well as the more general information habits and perceptions of the information environment that these groups display. After comparing the two examined groups, the thesis concludes that there are, in fact, no major differences in how these groups perceive and experience information overload and their surrounding information environment. Having an academic interest and specialty in information science is thus not indicative of being able to avoid or even think very differently about information overload. Finally, some relevant research directions are proposed.

    Abstract [en]

    Swedish cultural heritage policies put heritage of the Church of Sweden in an exceptional position. It is protected by law and managed by the Church of Sweden which receives a yearly economical compensation from the Swedish government to assure a continued protection and care. The purpose of this study has been to examine categories and definitions that are used in the formulations of the protection of this part of the national cultural heritage. The study also analyses the values and motives behind the distribution, which is being regulated by said definitions. To achieve this, I have answered questions about to what kind of projects the compensation has been distributed, focusing on the appointed object and intervention categories. These classifications have been compared to the projects actual character, and also to official guidelines and policies.

    The results of the study show that the distribution of the government compensation follow official guidelines more often than not, but also that the project categorizations are frequently misguiding in comparison to the actual character of the projects. In written statements from the Swedish National Heritage Board and the Church of Sweden a dissonance regarding their respective value perspectives has been shown. The big difference is found in a question of definitions regarding the nature of the religious heritage in policy documents.

    Definitions of cultural heritage are crucial in heritage management. The classification stated in policy documents and used during the management of the heritage of the Church of Sweden, is also defining what is included. These classifications and definitions are part of the traditional western heritage management discourse. By using theoretical frameworks like Authorized Heritage Discourse the results of the study has been put in a perspective of using categories as way to manifest material heritage.

    The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the status of the public library field in contemporary society. This is realized through an analysis of the debate concerning the addition to the Stockholm city library as it unfolded in two morning papers.Critical discourse analysis is used as theoretical basis, combined with social field theory. The status of the public library field is elaborated on in relation to the field of architecture.41 texts, either debate articles or columns, constitute the source material. The critical discourse analytic approach is methodologically complemented with a method inspired by Paul Ricoeur's ”Hermeneutics of Suspicion”, in order to allow analysis of a wider source material.The analysis indicates that the public library field enjoys relatively low status compared to other social fields. Voices from the field are largely missing in the debate, and identities attributed to actors within the public library field by actors from other fields are negative. Notions, viewpoints and perspectives originating from the field of architecture predominates in the debate, discriminating those of the public library field, which are sparsely occurring and unelaborated. No significant impact on language usage, and consequently ideas and representations, across field borders is discernible, leading to the conclusion that no change in field relationships is imminent. It is argued that the absence of participation partly can be seen as a consequence of a better predisposition among actors within the architecture field to act in a mass media environment. A suggestion is made that the education relevant to actors within the public library field should convey an orientation to mass media environments, thus promoting the ability to participate in public debates. If the failure to appear in the public debate among public library field actors persists, there is risk that the field’s status will be further undermined.The thesis is a two years master's thesis.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to study factors that influence borrowing and consumption of fiction. The thesis focus on social aspects and reading habits based on previous research and the works of literary sociologists.How do socio-economic features, reading habits and different ways of consuming and obtaining books af-fect borrowing and consumption of fiction? And is there a difference between what people borrow and what they buy? The theoretical framework is based on works of literary sociologists, and the methodology used is a quanti-tative survey. The survey, created for this particular study, included 170 respondents, taking into account previ-ous research and the theory. The participants had to be residents in the County of Stockholm, over 16 years of age and having at least once for the past 12 months bought a book or borrowed a book at a public library. The results show that the most important single factors to borrow fiction among the respondents are distance to the library and that the library obtains new books. The analysis of the social factors confirms results from previous research, but shows other interesting results as well. In addiction, the thesis confirms that what, how and why people read affects the way they borrow and consume fiction. One conclusion is that the less involved reader is affected by aspects such as price and new books, while the more involved reader most likely borrow and con-sume books regardless of single factors. Another conclusion is that consumption, even when the books aren’t actually read, promotes both borrowing and buying of books. Lastly, I would like to conclude that there is a dif-ference between how the respondents consume and borrow fiction. This difference suggests that those who read broader, more commercial, literature seems to prefer the library, that accessibility and time are factors that are important to borrow fiction and that the price of books in the bookstores is important to those who are less fre-quent borrowers and consumers.

    The purpose of this thesis is to examine the transition from SAB to DDC in the public libraries of Sigtuna.More specifically, it aims at investigating why the decision was made to adopt the DDC and how the system has been implemented. Particular attention is drawn to the difficulties and problems that have arisen while organising the libraries open shelves with DDC and to the ways in which the difficulties have been handled. These questions are examined through a pragmatic perspective on Knowledge Organization that focuses on the contexts and domains in which the classification system is used. The empirical material is drawn from qualitative interviews with the former director of Sigtuna public libraries and with the in-charge of the catalogue department.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this one-year master thesis was to examine the principles of arrangement used by the Swedish Royal Office archive from about 1540-1878, and how the principles of arrangement have corresponded with the information needs of that rules the Swedish Royal Office archive. The following theoretical premises were important: Berndt Fredriksson's empirical archival science, JBLD Strömberg's concepts of archive systems and Randolph C. Head's concepts of mirroring.

    Two questions have been examined. What connections is there between the major reorganizations of the Swedish Royal Office archive, the process for governance of Sweden / the Royal Office, access to / control over archival documents, information needs, the political situation, and changes in how the archive was arranged and inventoried. What sources of inspiration have those responsible for the reorganizations had regarding the reorganizations? My source material consisted primarily of archival inventories. In this inquiry I have used a case study in which document and literature studies were conducted.

    During this study I have discovered that several principles of arrangement was in use simultaneously during the examined time period. This suggests either that older ideas regarding inventory labor were present at the same time and influenced the inventory labor or that the "archivist" during this time period had great freedom to choose between different principles of arrangement. Arrangement by geographic location were used during the entire time period. The archival inventories arranged by this principle has evolved from larger descriptions over geographic places to titles in Latin over countries. It also seems likely that the countries of this archival inventories represented Sweden's foreign relations. Mirroring has been detected between the reasons for the reorganizations, major political conflicts internally and externally, changes in the governance process, the user groups of the archive, the information needs and archival inventories. Mirroring has also occurred between the principles of arrangement and information access and needs. There are several available sources of inspiration to the reorganizations and hence the principles of arrangement.

    This paper examines the use of internet and other new technologies by Swedish public librariesfrom a public sphere perspective as well as the discussion surrounding this use by libraries,librarians and others. The theoretical framework is thus the habermasian theories about the publicsphere and communicative action. The public sphere strengthening use of internet and other newtechnologies would be use consistent with the ideas of community informatics and library 2.0.With an interpretative, qualitative method this paper examines public libraries web pages andtheir blogs but also other kinds on internet material not created by libraries but by librarians orothers which discuss the use of new technologies in libraries. Those sources consist of more blogs,communities and wikis.The findings are that library use of the internet and other new technologies mostly benefit theaccessibility of the libraries “old” services as well as making them more visible to the users. Theyare also used to provide other kinds of local information and helping users to use computers andthe internet. A new portal, biblioteket.se, provides the users with many options for interacting witheach other but few other library pages provide much services of that kind. The overall use of newtechnologies by libraries is high as shown by that several, even rather small, libraries use blogs,RSS and SMS to provide their users with information about current events in the library and otherlocal information. The discussion surrounding these new phenomena is mostly positive, that ismost agree that the libraries should use new technologies in a user centered way. The term “library2.0” however is not very popular and is causing problems and misunderstandings and some peoplesuggest changing it to something else. The paper also finds that there are not only very activediscussions about the topics but also new projects, web pages and library systems on their way.

    This Master’s thesis examines the description of users in the journal Biblioteksbladet. The aim is to compare thedescription of users in articles related to public libraries and those related to academic libraries. Questions posedin this study are: what discourses can be found in the articles and what characterises them? How are userscategorised and what does this categorisation imply?The theoretical and methodological background is discourse theory, as presented by Ernesto Laclau andChantal Mouffe.The survey consists of two parts. The first one explores the themes that are prominent in the articles, andwhat can be said about the user based on what is said within these themes. The second part examines thedifferent categories of users.In the articles concerning public libraries I have identified the discourse of the (help)needing user, thediscourse of the change-prone user, and the discourse of the independent user, in the articles concerningacademic libraries I have identified the market economic user-discourse, the discourse of the change-prone user,the discourse of the conservative user and the discourse of the reluctant user.Common to articles concerning public libraries is an almost overly positive description of both the library ingeneral and its users. Articles relating to academic libraries have a much more negative description of the users.There is also a discussion about possible explanations behind these different discourses, which mainlyconcerns the relationship between librarians and users, and the library's status in society. Public libraries may beperceived as a relatively endangered social institution with decreasing number of visitors. This may be a reasonbehind the almost excessively unproblematic way to present the relationship with their users, with the function tooperate as a self-fulfilling prophecy.For academic libraries the descriptions of the users are often more negative, and more often are theypresented as students or researchers, than as users more generally. In these descriptions the relationship betweenthe librarian and the user can be said to be prominent, and to some extent explained by a more vulnerableprofessional identity for the librarian when many of the users of academic libraries are experts in their ownfields.
