I riktning mot en normkreativ kulturmiljövård: Metodutveckling utifrån exemplet Statens fastighetsverk i Sverige2018Inngår i: Kulturstudier, ISSN 1904-5352, Vol. 9, nr 1, s. 167-198Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

Digitala bibliotek och biblioteksdidaktik: en undersökning av två nationalbibliotek2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Introduction. The aim of this thesis is to examine use of library didactics in two prominent national libraries. A second aim is to identify digital resources used in the digital library spaces. The study uses “the four-space model” to examine this relation.

Method. Document analysis is used to examine the two national libraries´ websites. In addition to the websites, affiliated sites like social media are also included. Categories from the four- space model are used: learning space, inspiration space, performative space and meeting space. Digital resources are identified and presented in each category respectively.

Theories. Library didactics, as developed by for example Jochumsen, Rasmussen and Skot- Hansen, is the subject of the thesis and main theoretical focus. The digital library rooms are seen as places for possibilities and for developing innovative library practices.

Conclusion. The results imply that of the four spaces, the smallest one is the performative space and that the activities for creating are few. Different social media are to a large degree used as meeting space and thus possibilities for meeting and participation are subject to the companies’ business models and policies. In relation to the visitors the two national libraries mainly use their collections as resources in the inspiration space. One clear example is Gallica, described as a digital library with focus on digitized documents.  In the learning space the format is primarily texts with illustrations and this could be seen as an attempt from the libraries to adapt to a traditional learning environment. Furthermore it is concluded that the search functions can be a hindrance to both the visitor and to the libraries´ objectives. In the discussion, a question concerning competences is raised in regard to innovative library didactics.

Modern Turkish National Identity in Museums: Representation Analysis in Istanbul Museums and Heritage Sector Between 2010-20202021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The representation of national identity in museums of the 21st century´s diverse and multicultural societies is a challenging task. It is a task that involves questions of narrative and heritage inclusivity as well as questions of power and ideology. This thesis includes an investigation of the representation of the Turkish national identity in two state owned museums, one private museum and two contested heritage sites in Istanbul. Both contested sites were legally transformed from museums to mosques in 2020. The investigation also involves questions of power and legitimacy in the Turkish heritage sector in the past decade. Qualitative methods including observations, grounded theory initial coding, exhibition spatial syntax analysis and objects´ value analysis are used in the research. The analysis results revealed a fragmentation in the Turkish national identity representation and in the power structure of the Turkish heritage sector where different key actors are involved in national identity production and representation. The History narrative represented is linear and fragmented where each selected museum presents a different historical period with an emphasis on the multicultural nature of the region historically. Ideology and the heritage policy analysis has revealed that the Turkish heritage sector is heading towards an Ottoman based ideology instead of the secular Kemalism ideology that had built the modern Turkish national identity since the establishment of the republic in 1923.

The results show that the challenge of representing inclusive and sustainable heritage and national identities in multicultural societies is complex. However, to achieve that, museums and heritage sectors would have to adopt policies of recognition and civil society involvement. The state would have to take an architect role by funding the museum and heritage sector without interfering in museum´s function.

Kvinnogestaltning i utställningar: Hur det berättas om kvinnor i antika kulturer2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how women are represented in exhibitions about the ancient cultures of Greece, Rome and Egypt. The two museums which have been studied are the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm and the British Museum in London. Observations of the exhibitions, notes and interviews with museum personnel are the methods used in this study. The theory used is gender theory, focussing on Yvonne Hirdman’s gender system.

The purpose of the study is to examine how the museums are working with representing women in ancient cultures, what objects are exhibited that relates to women and how museum teachers include women in tours. The study shows that women are represented in different degrees in the exhibitions and are much less included in texts. The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities have the ambition and interest from the personnel to review their exhibits to include a broader perspective where women are better represented.

Både museum och kyrka: Bruket av två kyrkor på friluftsmuseer i gränssnittet mellan museum och religion2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study sheds light on an interface between the concepts of museum and religion, based on case studies of two churches located at open-air museums: Seglora kyrka at Skansen in Stockholm and Murbergskyrkan at Murberget in Härnösand. These represent two types of museum churches, where Seglora kyrka originally was built för religious use within the Church of Sweden, while Murbergskyrkan originally was built by an open-air museum.

This has been done through studies of both the biographies of the churches, to understand the changes in identities that they have undergone during their lives, and the use of the churches today, to understand possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches at museums. The research has been carried out as a methodological bricolage, where printed sources have been combined with interviews with museum employees and observations of the churches.

Based on the biographies of the churches, it can be stated that Seglora kyrka has gone through several changes, to when transferred to Skansen be assigned its present identities as both a museum object and a religious object. Murbergskyrkan has always been assigned these parallel identities. Both churches are still used both pedagogically and religiously, and assigned identities as both museum objects and religious objects. The different uses of the churches do sometimes stand in conflict. Religious practice can go against a museal conservational mission. Pedagogical use of religious objects can be a subject of debate, for example when programs aimed for schools take place in religious buildings.

Churches are located at several open-air museums, in Sweden and internationally, and are often included in both educational and religious use. Awareness of possible conflicts between pedagogical and religious use of churches should hence be required from museum educators and employees.

Känslostormar: Emotionellt lärande vid museer2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The emotional part of a museum experience is being debated and there is research pointing towards the affective part of learning. The purpose of this study is to examine how museum pedagogues reason about the usage of affective learning in their work and to investigate whether they consider affective pedagogy is a part of their work or not. Furthermore how they consider themselves working, or not working, with feelings in their pedagogy.

A key factor in this study has been to work interdisciplinary with both museum pedagogy and social science with theoretical perspectives of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear, and with theories such as Feelings & materiality and Pedagogy of Feeling. Methodologically a qualitative interview study museum pedagogues have been used together with observation of four Swedish state- and country museums.

In this thesis it is shown that the interviewed museum pedagogues indeed have acknowledged the fact that the museum is an affective place, but the interviewed had different way of make use of feelings. They all agree on the fact that feelings can support the learning process, and that all the different feelings have their own effect on learning. Also that the museum pedagogues have some influence on the feeling that the exhibitions are to emit, which could be used in the pedagogues favor if the exhibition consists of hard and problematic feelings. However, in contrast to this it seems that few of the museum pedagogues discuss the affective influence of a upcoming exhibition or program, or evaluate a project in what feeling the visitors experienced during the visit.

Bilder som informationsbärare: En jämförande studie av bilder i arkiv2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how images are used and evaluated in a Swedish archival context. Images as of today are very common in society. They are nearly everywhere, particularly in our phones and computers. Therefore the written word is slowly losing it's sovereignty as a carrier of information. With this background the study examines if the images role also have changed in an archival setting.

The following work is a qualitative research study that examines three Swedish archives: the Regional State Archive in Uppsala, Swedish Labour Movement's Archives and Library in Stockholm and the Centre for Business History in Stockholm. Furthermore the study examines how the institutions organize images and how they make them accessible for the public. It also examines what role the image play as a carrier of information in the archive. In more general terms the study also investigates what function the image can have for people in society. The comparison of the archival institutions is a methodological foundation for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with archivists from the three institutions and works as the main source. For the analysis this study uses document theory and a few concepts derived from Terry Cook's archival theory, namely evidence, memory, identity and community.

In terms with the previous research made on the subject this study comes to the result that images have different terms for archiving than other materials, most specifically papers documents. The examined archival institutions are today using the same tools for organizing images as they use for other documents. This can have negative effects on the ability the image has as a carrier of information. In the long run this could cause the image to become a marginalized part of the archive as a whole.

The conclusion this mater's thesis presents is that the image has a potential as a source of information. Especially for groups that aren't previously represented in the archive through traditional paper documents. The image may therefore contribute to the archival pluralism and diversity, as long as the images are treated with the terms they demand as an archival document.

Arkivet- en resurs för skolan?: En arkivpedagogisk studie utifrån arkivens samarbete med skolan.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

Policy och predikament: En kvalitativ studie av kemisternas erfarenhet av Chalmers implementering av OA-policy2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The starting point of this study is a letter to the Swedish Research Council which maintained the difficulty to reconcile chemistry with open access. Previous studies show that when other sciences is increasing in both the deposition rate and selection of OA journals, there is a lull in chemistry. The purpose of the master thesis is to gain an understanding of chemists reluctance to open access in the light of the implementation of Chalmers' mandating open access policy and through field theoretical perspectives understand why. The survey is conducted with a qualitative approach and the empirical data consist of interview material from nine interviews that took place at Chalmers Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The interviews show that chemists believe that the idea of open access is certainly sympathetic but incompatible with the chemical sciences. It is believed that the discipline´s traditions, practice and publishing culture as well as opportunities for career differs from other sciences, including what open access is concerned. This uniqueness has not been taken into account in the implementation of OA policies of funding agencies and universities, according to the informants.

Evaluations of other universities implementations of open acces policies have identified success factors like support, legal advice and hands-on help in self-archiving. According to the results of this thesis, functionality and infrastructure appears to be less significant if university management and funders does not establish an atmosphere of alliance and thus undermines confidence in the policy and its proponents. The study confirms the importance of the researchers feel invited and involved in the process of change.

Min kropp är mitt varumärke: Museer och prostitution2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how two museums in Europe embody and portray prostitution and sex work. This paper is based on a comparison between the Red Light Secrets Museum in Amsterdam and the walk out tour We have always been everywhere in Berlin. The purpose of this essay is to discuss and analyse how, within various museum activities and dimensions, prostitution can be described and portrayed based on different contexts. The method used to conduct the investigation is based on observations and a thick description of the audio guides found in the museums. This will be examined through theories based on the view of prostitution and visitor behaviours. This paper will also include an analyse of spaces and places.

This study concludes that the two museums are similar in how to display the different dimensions of their exhibitions. Both museums discussed how prostitution is described, portrayed the sex buyer, the visitor’s integration with the museum, how to handle control and the shape of the environment. But they had different approaches to the material. The walk out tour approaches prostitution from an Empowerment paradigm. The Red Light Secrets Museum is more ambiguous in its material and can to some extent be connected to an Empowerment paradigm. However, since it also includes other views than the conventional ones, the material should be considered more from the perspective of the Polymorphous paradigm. To inform the visitor of their information the audio guide and the environment in its in-situ settings came to be an important tool for both museums approaches to portray prostitution. The previous research that has been done on prostitution, from this papers view, is very lean. It´s therefore problematic to draw conclusions about the material based on earlier research and theoretical approaches.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse: An investigation into policies of long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repositories2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

With the purpose to investigate policies within long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repository, this two year's master thesis was conducted through a qualitative study with quantitative overtures. The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy.

The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation.

The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.

    Abstract [en]

Sometime in the second century CE, Pausanias of Magnesia (modern-day Turkey) wrote the Description of Greece. Ostensibly a tour of the places to see on the Greek mainland, the Description also provides historical accounts related to the topography through which Pausanias moves. Little attention has been given to how these building blocks of narrative, the entities of place and time, relate to and intersect with each other. In this article, we establish a framework for systematically investigating Pausanias’s chronotopes through a process of semantic annotation. We describe our typology for categorizing place and time, with the aim of enabling this text’s database of information — the descriptions of the built environment, its temples, statues, etc. — to be mapped and analysed. Our emphasis, however, is on how the technology equally facilitates close reading, as we trace how individual locations, objects and people relate to each other through the unfolding of chronotopes, and examine how in turn these chronotopes transform our understanding of the spaces of Greece and Greece as a place. We conclude by offering reflections on the potential for semantic annotation of the kind documented here not only for conducting chronotopic investigations of literary geographies, but also for bringing the textualization of space into direct dialogue with the material culture on the ground.

Mode på museum: En analys av tre svenska utställningars gestaltning och skildring av mode, kvinnor och stereotyper2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The following thesis aim is to examine and acknowledge a subject and material that has been overlooked in museological research. More specifically, the visual and material embodiment of fashion. This study has thus examined three Swedish fashion exhibitions, namely Augusta Lundin: Sveriges första modehus, Nordens Paris: om NK:s Franska damskrädderi 1902–1966 as well as Modest Fashion, and their portrayal and depiction of fashion. The study was conducted based on observations and interviews, and placed in relation to gender perspective as well as stereotyping, with a focus regarding the narrative of women. An important finding in the examination of these exhibitions, has been their depiction of women as active and with participation in the public sphere. The exhibitions also emphasize the symbolic value of fashion and how apparel is and has been used by women as a social practice. The analyse has shown the multidimensional meaning of fashion and its cultural value, not least in portraying women of the past, present, and future. Museums can thus be considered as important platforms, where the embodiment of fashion can be contextualized and where its cultural value can be recognized. This is a two-year’s master thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the cultural place and status of video and computer games in the Swedish public library. Using works on popular culture and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study employs quantitative methods, as well as textual analysis, to analyze the results of an online questionnaire with 19 questions focusing on selection criteria, shelf placement, perceived competence, as well as reasoning for having or not having these games in the library. 286 out of the 440 libraries contacted is participating in the study, and the libraries consist exclusively of public libraries in Sweden that are found in the database of the Royal Library.

The results of this study show that a larger number of libraries than previously indicated have started to provide electronic games to their patrons. At the same time, patterns in the data and comments suggests that these games in many cases still do not enjoy the same level of cultural recognition as other media. Indicative of this is the way most libraries seem to focus on the medium being exclusively for their young patrons, with seem-ingly very little in the way of investment for adults. Also relevant is selection process being highly influenced by the type and amount of violence in the games, regardless of the level of competence and knowledge about games among library staff. These findings relate to and expand upon previous studies regarding electronic games, cul-ture and the public library. This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Schablonen som sprack: Meningsskapande narrativ i Jenny Lindhs spalt "Fråga bibliotekarien" 2011-20152016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The column ”Fråga bibliotekarien” by Jenny Lindh is published in Dagens Nyheter, and is a popular culture work wich is read by a broad audience. This work examines how Lindh relates to established stereotypes of female librarians, and her position on the matter. Lindhs work is new in that she is a working librarian herself, and the question to be answered by this master thesis is whether or not her narrative loosens up, and breaks down, established stereotype images of the librarian.

The source material is Lindhs work ”Fråga bibliotekarien”, published in Dagens Nyheter. The analysis is made on 171 pieces, which are answers to the questions of readers. A method of discourse analysis is used, focusing on categorized content and in some cases form. The categorized elements follows previous published sterotypes of the female librarian. Theory of language for narrative creation and post-modernity has been used in the analysis of the material. Further, the humor and irony used in the work is discussed and it is shown how Lindh uses these narrative tools to both enhance and ridicule the sterotype images of the female librarian.

This master thesis come to the conclusion that Lindh is very well aware of the various stereotypes that exists regarding her profession, and that she uses these. But also that the total ensemble of her work breaks down these images and shows how impossible they are as a representation of the female librarian. Finally, she adds a new narrative, in connection with post-modernity, where she creates an identity of the librarian built upon contradictary stereotypes of old, with added display of professional competence within library and information science.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: This study investigates aspects of authenticity, branding and taste, in relation to the assortment of goods in shops affiliated with museums and cultural heritage sites. The research questions focus on the categories of products found in the shops, branding strategies and the approach and opinion of the shop regarding authenticity. The introductory hypothesis believed that a strong link between authenticity and taste would be visible in the material.

Aim: The primary purpose of this study is to examine the tension between the commercial aspect and the cultural and educational role of museums and cultural heritage sites. Also, previous research has largely focused on cultural-historical museum shops and this study aimed to broaden the field regarding cultural heritage and consumption, by including both museums, and non-museums from several disciplines.

Method: The material was procured by field studies and interviews with shop representatives. The sites included are the Vasa Museum, Skansen, the National Museum och Science and Technology, The Royal Palace and Stockholm City Hall. All sites are situated in Stockholm, Sweden.

Results: The study concluded that further research should be done based on a more diverse material, in terms of subject and discipline of the sites. Several differences were identified between cultural heritage sites and museums, such as the judicial responsibilities of the museums. The shops belonging to cultural heritage sites aso acted more independently from their institutions, than those of the museums. The introductory hypothesis was mainly disproven, as authenticity was not as significant for the representatives as initially believed.

Kyrkliga kulturminnen eller kyrkligt kulturarv?: En studie av kategorier och definitioners påverkan på fördelning av kyrkoantikvarisk ersättning2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Swedish cultural heritage policies put heritage of the Church of Sweden in an exceptional position. It is protected by law and managed by the Church of Sweden which receives a yearly economical compensation from the Swedish government to assure a continued protection and care. The purpose of this study has been to examine categories and definitions that are used in the formulations of the protection of this part of the national cultural heritage. The study also analyses the values and motives behind the distribution, which is being regulated by said definitions. To achieve this, I have answered questions about to what kind of projects the compensation has been distributed, focusing on the appointed object and intervention categories. These classifications have been compared to the projects actual character, and also to official guidelines and policies.

The results of the study show that the distribution of the government compensation follow official guidelines more often than not, but also that the project categorizations are frequently misguiding in comparison to the actual character of the projects. In written statements from the Swedish National Heritage Board and the Church of Sweden a dissonance regarding their respective value perspectives has been shown. The big difference is found in a question of definitions regarding the nature of the religious heritage in policy documents.

Definitions of cultural heritage are crucial in heritage management. The classification stated in policy documents and used during the management of the heritage of the Church of Sweden, is also defining what is included. These classifications and definitions are part of the traditional western heritage management discourse. By using theoretical frameworks like Authorized Heritage Discourse the results of the study has been put in a perspective of using categories as way to manifest material heritage.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I examine three cities that have been nominated as world heritage sites by UNESCO, and how these cities are understood and mediated by visitors. One of the research questions was also to see how these places has been affected by the nomination. I have visited Visby, Dubrovnik and Toruń to do this research. I wanted to find out why so many people choose to visit these places and how much the world heritage nomination was part of the decision to visit. This is done by examining how these cities are mediated by travel literature, tourist information in the form of brochures and other information, as well as interviews. These interviews were conducted both with tourists at these sites, but also with people that work with tourism or cultural heritage in some form.

The method used besides interviews has been thick description as it is formulated by Clifford Geertz to describe and make sense of these places and to see how you would experience these places as a tourist. The researchers that has figured as a theoretical background include John Urry and Andrew Walsh. Urry describes how the tourist uses different gazes to see the world in different ways, and Walsh describes how a place that seems to be irreplaceable might in fact not be so irreplaceable, which applies on the examined places in this thesis. Josefina Syssner and Karim van Knippenberg together with Linde Egberts lays a groundwork for the understanding of different sorts of tourists, and what tools can be used is place marketing of these cities.

In agreement with previous research I conclude that the primary attraction of these sites for the tourists is not their status as world heritage sites, and the reason that these sites are troubled with mass tourism lies elsewhere. The place itself is replaceable for the majority of the tourists, but not for the material heritage. A better dialogue is needed between the tourism and heritage sector, as well as local residents and politicians, to be able to counteract the negative effects of mass tourism, that is shown to wear on the material culture. The mediation needs to include a more widespread picture of the complex issues that concerns these heritage sites. In todays globalized and mobile world, the idea of world heritage sites becomes problematic, as this work has shown. This thesis is a two years master’s thesis in Museum and cultural heritage.

Social inclusion on display: a cross-cultural study of museological practices in Sweden and Italy2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the practices of four museums in two countries in relation to the notion of social inclusion and how their museum professionals reflect about the topic. The aim is to provide an empirical grounding of Sandell’s theory about the three levels of impact within which museums can address social exclusion: with individuals, specific communities and wider society. The practices of four museums will be analysed and discussed: Västmanlands läns museum and Västerås Konstmuseum in Västerås, Sweden and Musei Civici and Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

To answer the research questions, nine qualitative semi-structured interviews were performed. The informants selected are museum professionals responsible for different public practices at their institutions. The interviews were taped and at a later stage transcribed. Additionally, documentation from different sources completes the empirical data. A qualitative analysis has been employed to analyse the data. Text analysis and thematic analysis were selected to scrutinize the data. I employed the deductive method to trace Sandell’s theory on the data.

The findings show that the notion of social inclusion is a subjective concept. Nonetheless, all the informants’ ideas of social inclusion are consistent with Sandell’s definition. The practices enhanced by the museums to address social inclusion are different in nature but mirror the understanding of the concept expressed by the museum professionals and it is in line with Sandell's model. Therefore, his theory about the three levels of impact that museums can achieve implementing inclusive practices is verified by the empirical data. Moreover, my hypothesis about the link between the social inclusion enact by museums and the socio-cultural context is proved too.

Skildringen av det svåra arvet: En studie av utställningarna på Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos i Santiago, Chile2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (MMDH) in Santiago, Chile is dedicated to the depiction of a difficult heritage. This museum of memory and human rights narrates the military dictatorship in Chile 1973–1990, a time when thousands of people were subjected to unthinkable human rights violations committed by the Government Junta of Chile.

Memorial museums exist worldwide and aim to depict a specific historical event when people have been victimized by the state. By showcasing the crimes committed by the junta, MMDH seeks to contribute to the culture of human rights to prevent human rights violations from reoccurring in the future; a culture of Nunca Más (Never Again). In this thesis, the permanent exhibitions of MMDH have been studied through the lenses of representation and discourse theory. The purpose has been to understand the way in which the museum depicts the dictatorship and whether the goal of contributing to a human rights culture was visible in the material that is presented in the exhibitions. The results show that MMDH depicts a story using different themes primarily relating to the crimes committed by the Chilean state and the civilian population’s fight for human rights.

In the exhibitions, several themes evoke emotions and can generate a real impact on the visitors. However, the museum presents its material without analysis or interpretation and it disclaims placing the dictatorship in a historical and political context, which can inhibit the educational purpose of the museum. In addition, since the exhibitions lack educational material on human rights and democracy, the categorization of being a museum of human rights with the goal of contributing to a culture of human rights, is insufficient. In the discourse of the exhibitions present at MMDH there is an apparent inclusion and exclusion of narratives which can be explained by the museum’s political link in a country that to this day is undergoing a process of dealing with its past.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on how the engaging and entertaining medium of virtual reality and serious games has the potential to connect traditional galleries, libraries, archives, and museum (GLAM) sector organizations with contemporary audiences by blending old traditions and new technologies. Following a short definition of virtual reality, we discuss the relevance and increasing intersecting importance of virtual heritage and serious games, especially those dealing with topics and issues in art history. We suggest that while the majority of studies deal with physical or digital maintenance and display of art-historical objects; public engagement can further be achieved with the aid of participatory, sensory, and interactive platforms.

Om utställda känslor: Känsloberättelser och museiutställningar som narrativ2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Emotions are sometimes thought of as human universals, biological facts shared by everyone due to the place of emotions as a function of evolution. A competing theory of emotion has been developed in the field of the history of emotions, where emotions instead are thought of as less unstable historically variable categories. The field of history of emotions has contributed to a heightened interest in emotions in general, including in the places of emotions within museums and museum discourse. Emotions are not only thought of as instrumental in the service of a museum’s pedagogical or political goal but are also subjects of exhibitions in their own right.

A first principle for the following work has been that museum exhibitions are discursive acts with narrative form. In this masters thesis, I have wanted to examine the ways in which museums exhibit emotions and their histories and to what extent exhibited emotion require certain curatorial considerations to function as meaningful narratives within the context of the history of emotions. Throughout, theoretical approaches are borrowed from the study of literature and from cultural studies to work toward this goal. Two case studies are carried out in which I consider the poetics of exhibition and the role this poetic plays for the interpretation of the two narratives as wholes. An exhibition about the role of the ultras type of football supporters in the uprisings of the Arab Spring was found to centrally place emotions as catalysts for ultras’ political action. The style of narrative was found to be contributing to the sharp division between implicit audience and the culture depicted that ultimately, it was argued, gave this exhibition a place within the discourse of Orientalism. The second case study was of an exhibition about the history of love, and analysis revealed a confusion of two theoretically competing meta-narratives of love within the narrative. A universal and ahistorical metanarrative of emotion was found to work against the foundation of the exhibition as historical narrative. From these two case studies, I draw the conclusion that curators wishing to exhibit emotions must carefully consider the structure of their narratives, both because of the role of emotion in self-understanding and because of the demands on a historical narrative of emotion.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative thesis discusses the process of preservation of the community building Källör. In a case study the political processes around the issue of the preservation of the society building is examined on the basis of the concerned laws (PBL & KML), where the protection of cultural-historical buildings is treated in relation to the case of Källör. The voluntary commitment and its significance for the building, is examined through the community center association of Källörs (bygdegårdsförening societetshuset Källörs) work for the building's preservation and goal to run it as a community center (bygdegård). Finally, it is investigated whether and how the place has been important for the involvment of the association. Nine interviews were conducted for the study, six with members of the association and three with professional and responsible persons in the case. Materials in the form of laws, decisions, investigations, brochures and municipal plan overviews were also used for the study. The material was analyzed through the study's theoretical framework; the arm’s length principle (armlängdsprincipen), authority, authenticity, Sense of Place and Genius Loci. The case study shows that the issue of preserving the local cultural heritage is a complex and dynamic process. Those involved can interpret the laws and the cultural-historical value in different ways and the building is not always judged to be objective based on its cultural-historical value. The work of the association has made an impression in the political process and the place has also proven to be important for the associations commitment. The question of the preservation of the local cultural heritage is complex in where laws and collaborations have the potential to be developed, in order to ensure that the local cultural heritage is assessed according to it’s cultural-historical value and thus does not risk being lost.

Kulturfrämjande eller läsfrämjande?: En studie i läsfrämjande aktiviteter på två folkbibliotek2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how two libraries, Sundbyberg bibliotek and Rinkeby bibliotek,

work with activities that promote and stimulate reading among children and youths. The main purpose behind

this study is to examine what kind of activities the libraries offer, how they are received by the children and

youths participating in them and lastly how the libraries deal with children and youths who are disinterested in

    reading.

The theoretical base for this study is discourse analysis, which is used to distinguish a structure in the interviews

with the librarians from the two libraries. Furthermore, research results in the field of activities that promote

reading among children and youths form a backdrop for the study as well as a framework onto which the

    empirical results are hung.

The methods used in this study are qualitative interviews and text analysis. One librarian from Sundbyberg

bibliotek has been interviewed and two librarians from Rinkeby bibliotek. The text analysis was based on policy

documents, the websites of the respective libraries and lastly the social media where the libraries are active.

The main results show that the libraries have similar attitudes regarding the importance of reading for children

and youths. Furthermore, the librarians all showed a wide variety of activities that are intended to stimulate

reading for children and youths. These activities can be divided into either direct or indirect reading stimulating

activities. The direct activities deal with reading in a literal sense and books are a clear topic. The indirect activities,

however, are a way to mediate between the child and the youth, and reading. Instead of having books as a

topic, these activities are overtly about something else, such as films or playtime for toddlers. Reading is implied

but never mentioned directly. This division is in place because children and youths are less inclined to participate

in activities that are overtly about reading since there are a large number of children and youths who do not appreciate

    reading.

Pottery in Museums: How, Why and What do we exhibit?2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of pottery in the museum world. Throughout the study, questions along the lines of how, why and what we exhibit are brought up and answered. The study is done through observations and interviews with seven different museums, four of which are located in Sweden and three in Italy. The author has also used museological literature and theories in order to strengthen the essay and show that the issues brought up in the observations are known since before in the field, but still exist in the museums today. The exhibiting of pottery comes with several issues, such as overcrowding of displays, requirements of pre-knowledge from the visitors, aesthetical problems with broken, coarse or fine pottery and epistemological prob-lems. Epistemology is a subject that seems to be partly ignored in the observed museums, despite it being general knowledge that fewer visitors will read the text the longer it is. Other epistemological problems that are brought up are the issues of text placement, vocabulary and actual mediated information. These problems are brought up throughout the essay and explained, with a smaller section that discusses possible improvements to them, which have been brought up by researchers in the field. In interviews with curators of the museums, thoughts about what the visitors see and understand compared to what the museums want them the see are presented. Also their views on the possibilities of interaction with pottery as a mediator and whether they focus primarily on aesthetics or learning in the exhibitions are shown. This essay is not meant to be a decider between what is right or wrong concerning the exhibiting of pottery, but could be used as a stepping-stone towards such studies. Performativa tendenser i svenska och brittiska open access-nätverk: En aktör-nätverk-teoretisk studie av forskningsfinansiärers policydokument för öppen tillgång till vetenskaplig information2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Emanating in a Swedish and British context, this study seeks to map and discuss contemporary performative tendencies within the countries’ respective open access movements. This is done through a Posthumanist and Material-Semiotic analysis of nine research funders policy documents for open access to scientific results. Using an actor-network-theoretical apparatus of concepts, the study seeks to assess actors, actants, intermediaries, mediators, agencies, connections and networks in the policy documents of the respective research funders. The study therefore aspires to illuminate the complexities of these networks, similarities and differences between the two countries’ networks and what these networks can say about contemporary tendencies within the Swedish and British open access movements respectively.

Actors with their associated agencies and performative connections are analysed and compiled in tables according to the respective research funders. The output is thereafter visualised in a schematic network model and the performative tendencies are assessed. While Swedish council Vetenskapsrådet is defined as a ”spider in the web” of the research funder network, the British network is more fragmentary. As for Bioscientific networks, the Swedish network is of a more peripheral sort while the British consists of sprawling nodes. Within Health Science, there is for both countries a clear direction towards the fortification of infrastructures for data deposition. This can also be said regarding the deposition of monographs in Social Science and the Humanities. These tendencies are discussed in light of international open access research. It is proposed that research funders, libraries and other professionals active within the open access movements considers these tendencies in the forming of service activities. It is also emphasized that similar studies ought to be done in order to further map open access-networks.

Subkultur som kulturarv i en lokal kontext: Syns göteborgssoundet på ABM-institutioner i Göteborg?2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Through questionnaires answered by the institutions and through searches on their various websites, an image is developing that shows that subcultures are not always given room in the cultural heritage sphere. Even though the Gothenburg sound plays a big part within the metal world, and despite the fact that it has given Gothenburg international recognition within the metal community, it remains more or less invisible in Gothenburg’s institutionalized world, both as a subculture and as a cultural heritage.

With this essay, we are trying to create a perspective where an eventual explanation for this absence can be given, and where we can raise and problematize these questions. We are trying to illustrate the dominance of the mainstream society compared to subcultures, but also the institutions influence in what qualifies as a cultural heritage. We want to gain an understanding if the Gothenburg sound can be seen as a cultural heritage and if the genre should be made more visible within the institutions. In the end though, the question remain whether it would benefit the subculture to be made visible in the mainstream arena as they through such an uplifting also risk to lose their subcultural identity.

    Abstract [en]

This Master’s thesis examines the discussions about the new Swedish legal deposit legislation for electronicdocuments, related to Jürgen Habermas’ theories around the public sphere.

In 2009, a draft of the law proposal was sent out to various authorities and organizations who were asked tocontribute their views on this matter. This study looks at who has responded of those asked, and what commonviews are apparent within these responses. The responses from two different categories are focused on –universities and other authorities, examining if any similarities or differences can be noticed in the arguments inthe different categories’ responses to the proposed law change.

This information has been first analyzed through content analysis, providing an overview to the respondentsof the draft, and the different views which have arisen. Argumentation analysis has then been used to examinehow specific respondents have argued their views, focusing on the National Library of Sweden and the NationalArchives of Sweden.

The most common views and arguments revolve around the definitions suggested in the proposal, regardingwhich documents are to be collected and who is responsible for their delivery. Many respondents also mentionedtheir desire to be able to fulfill their legal deposit obligations by delivering documents through networks.

Habermas’ theories on the public sphere, which he claims to exist in today’s society, are very similar to thetheories of the public sphere addressed within this study. The authorities and organizations which have beenasked to contribute opinions towards this proposal are the same one who will be directly involved with the legaldeposit itself; while the future users of these collected electronic documents, namely scholars and the public, have been excluded from this discussion. Some respondents remarked upon the importance of the documentsbeing available to those to which they will be of use. However, the discussion has primarily concentrated on howthe delivery of these documents can be affected in the easiest possible manner for those involved.

”To Tiktok or not”: Tiktoks användbarhet hos svenska museer för att tilltala Generation Z2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate to what extent Swedish museums perceives TikTok as a useful social media application to reach Generation Z (Gen Z), the essay additionally examines how young people are influenced by social media in relation to museums. To examine this, two different surveys were conducted, one dedicated to museums in Sweden, the other to Gen Z.

The results of the study show that very few of Swedish museums in the studies selection group use TikTok, especially in comparison to the selection group consisting of Gen Z where more than half informants use the application. TikTok is a relatively new social media, and many museums are already using as many applications as they have the time and resources for at the moment.

The study shows that one of the popular uses of social media in general for museums is marketing. Marketing on TikTok does not fall into the traditional frameworks of marketing strategies, something museums have to be aware of if they want to use the application effectively. The results of the study also shows that TikTok is one of the better applications if you want to reach new audiences in Gen Z, this is largely due to the applications ”For you page” and its unique algorithm. However, the ”For you page" does not make it easier for museums to communicate with their existing audiences. This is because the ”For you page" does not always ensure that you get recommended videos from the users you follow, even if it’s more likely for that to happen.

The study shows as well that the majority of Gen Z informants would be motivated to visit museums if they were inspired enough by its content on TikTok or other social media. The survey responses indicate that most informants believe that they are influenced by what they see on TikTok/Social Media, there is thus a high possibility that the types of videos museums choose to publish on TikTok will influence how Gen Z perceives them.

Att samla en pandemi: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svenska museers samtidsdokumentation av vardagslivet under coronapandemin2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on eight Swedish museums, who collected intangible and tangible memories of how everyday life was affected during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020-2021.

These contemporary collecting projects were conducted by Eskilstuna stadsmuseum, Jönköpings läns museum, Klostret i Ystad, Nordiska museet, Skellefteå museum, Stockholms läns museum, Värmlands museum and Västerbottens museum.

Through semi-structured qualitative interviews with the museum professionals responsible for the collecting process, the aim was to collect data on how the projects were organised and which collecting methods that were used. Further, the aim was to discuss and analyse the contemporary collecting projects from the theoretical perspectives of cultural memory studies and participatory memory practices.

The results of the study show that the museums started the collecting projects in haste when the pandemic broke out and that the main collecting method being used was questionnaires. Other collecting methods, such as interviews, field studies and collecting of photographs, diaries, social media posts and tangible objects, were used as a complement. The museum’s purpose was to reach out as wide as possible with the collecting projects, to collect memories from different social groups in society.

In conclusion, the collected materials, the intangible and tangible memories collected from participating individuals, will together take place in cultural memory side by side with documentations of historical events and be of use for future generations. Memories were collected all over Sweden, from people of different age and gender. The projects would not have been possible to conduct without the voluntary participation of people sharing their memories of how everyday life was affected during the coronavirus pandemic.

    Abstract [en]

Interdisciplinarity is a common goal within specialized interdisciplinary organizations as well as within the academic world as a whole. Interdisciplinary research is connected with values such as a more market oriented approach, new ways of using theories and methods and a more cost efficient use of expensive research equipment. But few studies actually measure the development of organized interdisciplinary research over time.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential effects of organizational changes in research institu- tions whose purpose is to promote interdisciplinary research collaborations..

Using a longitudinal case study this essay measures the attempts of a Norwegian music therapy research organisation to actively induce interdisciplinary research over a period of eight years. An important part of the study is also to try common quantitative operationalizations of different types of interdisciplinarity with in a small case study. Bibliometric methods are used to visualize relations between researchers.

Important results include findings of increased interdisciplinary activity within the new organisation thus proving the possibility to create interdisciplinary conditions thru active organisational changes. The essay also show that operationalizations used in quantitative studies may need to be adapted to specific conditions in order to effectively measure interdisciplinary relations between researchers. As with all case studies the results of this essay needs to be tested and verified in further studies.

    Abstract [en]

This Master’s thesis has the politics of museum in focus, as a subordinate governmental cultural policy, as a continuation of cultural reform in a time when legislation were to take place in Sweden. The aim of the study is to map out claims from museums and their responsible authorities in response to the governmental bill Ny Museipolitik. The study deem the subject area of politics of museums as a organizational field. By using the Toulmin model of argumentation several hundred claims about the works of museums and the effects on society were founds.

The result could be arranged in eight different themes. In the analysis of the claims both unifying and disrupting tendencies could be observed. The themes presented in the result are: a new legislation, a new administrative authority, handling the collection, cooperation, fundings, museums and society, quality assurance and research at the museum and a round up theme called other.

One conclusion showed that the different levels of authorities in particular produced diversified needs and challenges. Some findings point out how the field are contested concerning legitimacy. There is also conclusion indicated by the claims that showed how several isomorphic tendencies were apparent. Legislation are considered to heighten the state of affairs and the increased level of ambition are welcomed. A very apparent conclusion is that a much needed reform, according to the comment letters, is that governmental grants are increased and secured over time.

    Abstract [en]

his chapter provides a transparent assessment of three otherwise unrelated mapping interfaces, conceptually designed for three different projects. The projects are: 1) the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD, www.sead.se), 2) Mapping Linguistic Landscapes and 3) Mekhane (www.mekhane.com). The first project, SEAD (www.sead.se, Buckland 2014a), is a research data infrastructure for storing, managing and analysing multidisciplinary paleo- environmental data.3 The project includes powerful in-house querying and limited visualization tools as well as providing a source of spatiotemporal data for other systems. The second project, Mapping Linguistic Landscapes, aims to create an understanding of the materialization of languages in urban and rural landscape. The project shows where, when and what languages are addressed and represented, and thereby gives an indication of the inclusion and exclusion of various linguistic groups in public spaces. The third project, Mekhane is a repository of information about research-driven 3D renderings of ancient cities. It further provides the user with a visualization of the geographical reach of antiquity. For example, a user can see how many times digital models of Rome were made in other places. Mekhane aims at providing the user with an understanding of ancient place and its contemporary reconstruction in one single interface. In the geovisualization analysis that follows, we suggest that places, structures, and materials with GIS may be used to uproot well-established notions of space and place in relation to landscapes, cultures, media, and societies (White 2010; Frank 2012).We then discuss the limitations of geovisualizations.

    Abstract [en]

Over the past decades the extraordinary growth of new technologies has made it possible to extract data from literary texts and analyse them using digital tools. This chapter focuses on the process of creating an enriched digital edition of Pausanias's Periegesis Hellados or Description of Greece. The purpose of this research is twofold: to identify ‘heritage data’ in Pausanias and to describe the technical and epistemological parameters of their aggregation and organisation. In answering the essentially digital humanities research question “how Pausanias's literary heritage information can be best organised and connected to the archaeological record on the ground”, the Digital Periegesis project is charting and analysing the relevant digital tools and methods by which extensive semantic annotation and Linked Open Data (LOD) can facilitate the organisation of heritage information in Pausanias's text and its connection to actual archaeological finds. This chapter discusses the potential application of Geographic Information Science (GISc) and Geographic Information System (GIS) for such complex pre-cartesian narrative analysis. Finally, it emphasises the importance of building geo-spatially enriched digital editions collaboratively, involving discipline specialist researchers and information organisation experts, with the aim of interpreting histories of “place”.

    Abstract [en]

How does ‘digital’ apply to ancient pasts? Digital methods, especially meth- ods relating to identifying, visualizing, and analysing spatial data, have become increasingly important within the fields of classical literature, archaeology, and heritage. On the one hand, literary narratives offer potentially different ways of representing space and place than the usual cartographic maps to which we have become accustomed. On the other hand, by virtue of being able to locate cultural artefacts in space – where they were found, through whose hands they have passed, where they reside now, where they were produced and circulated – it becomes possible to construct biographies or even itineraries of objects that offer richer ways of understanding their use and agency.

Unique in all classical literature, Pausanias’s second-century CE Periegesis Hellados presents an example of both types of spatial representation – a nar- rative that describes places of interest in the Greek landscape as well as the notable objects found there. This chapter discusses some of the ways in which Pausanias’s narrative of Greek heritage is good to consider when attempting to use digital methods for analysing the entanglements of place, people, and objects in a textual geography.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two years master thesis is to explore the relationship between public libraries and deaf adults. I want to know if deaf adults are a prioritized group in Swedish public libraries. Deaf adults use Swedish sign language witch is a visual language and differs from Swedish. I discuss the difference in Swedish Sign Language and Swedish and the importance of Sign Language literature. I also explore what methods can be used for mak-ing the library service towards the deaf group more customer centered and service oriented. The lack of sign language knowledge among the library personnel can lead to communication barriers. I want to illustrate these communication barriers, both psychological and semantic barriers, with Richard Dimble-by and Graeme Burton´s interpersonal communication theory. The psychological barriers consist of negative attitudes and prejudices. In this case these psychological barriers prevent the libraries from further proceedings with the marketing of their service, all based on the notion of deaf being uninterested in library service. This, on the other hand, leads to deaf people not knowing what public libraries can offer and therefor has become some-what of an invisible group in the libraries today.I performed ten surveys on ten public libraries in Sweden and a more detailed questioner to Teckenhörnan in Örebro public library. Thees surveys was done based on the IFLA Guidelines for Service for Deaf People. The result of this survey shows that deaf adults are not a prioritized group in public libraries. The lack of knowledge among library personnel about deafness, sign language and an understanding of the situation of deaf people is an obstacle. It is important to separate deaf from other disabled groups since deaf is more a linguistic minority then a disabled group.

    Abstract [en]

The museum life of archaeological artefacts - A biography of the Valsgärde-collection is a two years master ́s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies at Uppsala University in Sweden. It is an object biography of an archaeological collection housed in the university museum Museum Gustavianum in Uppsala. The collection is the result of excavations conducted by Uppsala University in the early 20th century in Valsgärde in Gamla Uppsala parish, Uppland. The aim of the study is to highlight the museum life of archaeological artefacts and relate this to the curation crisis within archaeology, as described in Anglo-American research. Archival material from the museum was examined, using a method inspired by ethnographic content analysis (ECA), in order to write a biography of the curatorial management and use of the collection. The resulting object biography revealed clear signs that the collection had been suffering from problems associated with the curation crisis during its museum life. The perspective offered by the biographical narrative also revealed some long-term issues that resulted in these problems. Both general problems described in research on the curation crisis and issues specific to the Valsgärde-collection is illustrated by this object biography. The study shows that a continuation of the biographies of archaeological artefacts beyond the mere excavation phase offers insights into issues within, as well as possible solutions to, the archaeological curation crisis.

Att utkräva ansvar: Inskränkningar i Offentlighets- och sekretesslagstiftningen utifrån accountability-begreppet och ett tekniskt perspektiv2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The whole purpose of this essay is to see how the opportunities to demand accountability been affected by changes in the OSL. This is based on three questions. The first question is: How changes affect the OSL opportunities for accountability? The second question: to what extent, technical progress been a driving force for changes in the OSL and in what way? The third and final question is: What changes have sparked debate?

The essay initiate with a report that konstitutionsutskottet compiled, the report was called Översyn av ändringar i offentlighets- och sekretesslagstiftningen 1995-2012. In this report konstitutionsutskottet compiles the changes implemented since the OSL entered into legal force in 2009. 53 of these changes resulted in actual changes in the law, such as new paragraphs or additions to the regulations. I examined the respective committee report for these 53 amendments thereto, and have the committee reports constituted the main source material for the essay. The methodology used for the survey of the committee reports is the document analysis.

The results of the survey are that the strengthened secrecy to protect data relating to individuals becomes the expense of opportunities for accountability. In a fairly large extent, technological developments have meant that the need to revise and extend the protection for individuals and thereby also limit the opportunity for accountability. Technological developments have also been pushing for changes to the OSL .

Few of these amendments leads to debate in terms of OSL, therefore, does not question the notches of OSL in especially large extent when the real restriction is actually happening. Konstitutionsutskottets report, in the beginning of the essay, however, shows a clear concern with regard to the entirety of the amendments.

    Abstract [en]

In 2019 media articles about clearance of human remains at a museum in Gothenburg caught my attention. The remains would either be destroyed, reburied or repatriated. The politically driven management, Västarvet, had made a decision on clearance of human remains at two museums in Gothenburg, which created reactions both in the research world and in the media. That´s why I chose to study deaccession of human remains in museums.

    The purpose of this master's thesis is to study how the principles for human remains, and attitudes towards deaccession of human remains have changed since the 19th century, and why? This is studied through a power and ethical perspective. The thesis research question is, what are the attitudes to clearance of human remains and how have the principles changed? This question is broken down into three smaller questions, which are;

    • What function have human remains had and what function do they have today?
    • How has the view of human remains changed since the 19th century?
    • What are the alternatives for clearance of human remains?

The method in this thesis is mail interview and literature study. The theoretical standpoints in this thesis are power and ethic, where power is based upon Michel Foucault’s approach to power and subject. I have also included two cases of deaccession, one is Västarvet and the other one is a case of repatriation from the British Museum.

Some of the results are that the function human remains have had, has partly changed over the past 200 years. Early on, human remains became study objects, which has continued into our time. But today the focus is mainly on research that is more or less ethically justifiable. Attitudes toward clearance of human remains in museums are generally something that comes with objections, specially from media. From museum professionals clearance is not something that they are opposed to, but at the same time it is a process that few in the industry use.

Etnocentrism i kulturarvsbegreppet: En undersökning av nationell och lokal politik2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

As the populist radical right movement grows in western Europe, the Sweden Democrats have taken place in the Swedish Parliament and in municipal councils around the country. The main purposes of this study were to develop an understanding of how the term “cultural heritage” is being used in policy documents and to see how ethnocentrism manifests itself throughout the texts written by the Sweden Democrats. Lastly, a part of the study was done to get a sense of whether or not the national cultural heritage laws and regulations can and will get implemented in local politics. Two different discourse analysis frameworks were used, one for analyzing the usage of the term cultural heritage and the problems behind the policy, and one for analyzing nationalism and ethnocentrism. The discourse analysis assumes a connection between the discourse presented in policy documents and the people. To complete the discourse analysis, a quantitative word count presented in charts were made, to support the interpretation of the discourses. To examine the implementation of cultural heritage regulations, four interviews took place, go get a look into the actual operation of the municipalities. These were analyzed with the help of an implementation framework consisting of three themes. The result of the analysis of the policy documents showed a few patterns, mainly that the policy makers throughout the study seem to emphasize the need to include all groups of people in society in the cultural heritage. This is phrased increasingly vivid as time goes by. Another pattern found in how the national cultural heritage is described was as isolated from the cultural heritage of minority groups, something that wears away over time to create a wider and more inclusive understanding of the term cultural heritage. The Sweden Democrats uses the term cultural heritage in a noteworthy fashion that differs greatly from the other policy makers used in the study.

AI and Swedish Heritage Organisations: challenges and opportunities2023Inngår i: AI & Society: The Journal of Human-Centred Systems and Machine Intelligence, ISSN 0951-5666, E-ISSN 1435-5655Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the challenges and opportunities that arise with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods and tools when implemented within cultural heritage institutions (CHIs), focusing on three selected Swedish case studies. The article centres on the perspectives of the CHI professionals who deliver that implementation. Its purpose is to elucidate how CHI professionals respond to the opportunities and challenges AI/ML provides. The three Swedish CHIs discussed here represent different organizational frameworks and have different types of collections, while sharing, to some extent, a similar position in terms of the use of AI/ML tools and methodologies. The overarching question of this article is what is the state of knowledge about AI/ML among Swedish CHI professionals, and what are the related issues? To answer this question, we draw on (1) semi-structured interviews with CHI professionals, (2) individual CHI website information, and (3) CHI-internal digitization protocols and digitalization strategies, to provide a nuanced analysis of both professional and organisational processes concerning the implementation of AI/ML methods and tools. Our study indicates that AI/ML implementation is in many ways at the very early stages of implementation in Swedish CHIs. The CHI professionals are affected in their AI/ML engagement by four key issues that emerged in the interviews: their institutional and professional knowledge regarding AI/ML; the specificities of their collections and associated digitization and digitalization issues; issues around personnel; and issues around AI/ML resources. The article suggests that a national CHI strategy for AI/ML might be helpful as would be knowledge-, expertise-, and potentially personnel- and resource-sharing to move beyond the constraints that the CHIs face in implementing AI/ML.

Lekrum på museum: En studie mellan Sjöhistoriska museet, Historiska museet och Upplandsmuseets barnutrymmen2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay is about children's rooms and playrooms at museums. It is a study comparing and examining the envi-ronments of three museums. The museums and play-environments that have been examined are Sjöhistoriska museet with the playroom Blubb, Historiska museet with the playroom Arkeoteket and Upplandsmuseet with the playroom Lilla Kvarn. The selected museums are all located in larger citiesand have free admission. All muse-ums are historically oriented. The main methodsused in the thesis is observation and interviews. Interviewstook place with relevant mu-seum staff who were linked to the design and execution of the playroom. Observations were made on two occa-sions, one before and one after the interview. This was so information granted in the interview could be integrat-ed in thelater observation. Actor-network theory or ANT is the theoretical foundation in the work together with similar theoretical reasoning as knowledge theory. Literature relevant to the topic has also been used as discussion material. The purpose of the essay has been to highlight the importance of playroom at the museum. The questions under investigation were:

    • Is playroom at museums part of the exhibition?

To answer this, additional questions were added:

    • What is the purpose of the room/ space?
    • Who is the target audience?
    • How is the space designed and on what grounds?
    • Does the room have educational purposes?
    • How does the room work in practice?

The results of observation and interview have shown that playrooms are a way for museums to reachthe younger  visitors. Young visitors are often neglected in exhibitions. The playroom offers a break from the remaining exhibitions with the opportunity to play, learn but also rest. The examined museums have several similar themes as they approach in different ways. For example, a reading corner with place to rest. The overall theme has also been "escape from reality" where the playroom's themes have been underwater, underground and "the past".

While Classics is nominally taught throughout Australia, and the Australian National Curriculum has established a framework to support the teaching of Classics and Classical Languages wherever schools can sustain a programme, the bulk of Classics teaching occurs on the east coast, and mostly in the states of New South Wales and Victoria. This chapter takes New South Wales as its focus and uses examples from Sydney Classics teachers as case studies. We focus on NSW's global antiquity approach as well as the use of visualization, fabrication and classical. reception in the school teaching of classical mytology

Vårt svenska kulturarv: En diskursanalys av Sverigedemokraternas syn på kulturarvsbegreppet i relation till den hegemoniska kulturarvsdiskursen2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this thesis is to gain insight to, and widened knowledge about, the contemporary nationalistic movement in Sweden, represented by the Sweden Democrats, and its’ relation to cultural heritage. The party has made cultural heritage the main focal of their culture politic, but the questions are what cultural heritage is to them, what content they read in to the concept, how they value heritage, what sort of heritage policies they want to pursue, and why. And also what sort of sources and expertise that are invoked by the party. The source material, consisting of transcripts from parliamentary debates, motions, and policy documents from the party’s web page, is processed through a discourse analytic method. An important theoretical starting point is that to define a term is to define the thing itself, and that this is an expression of power, especially when it comes to a parliamentary party.

The second purpose is to problematize and discuss the concept of heritage on a meta level by comparing the results from the empirical study with earlier research that explores the hegemonic heritage discourse.

The main findings are that the Sweden Democrats, like many of their peers around Europe, want to use cultural heritage to create unity and a common national identity – a mono culture to replace the multi cultural paradigm they mean is prevailing in the country (and ruining it). The party has an essentialist, even positivistic, view on the content of heritage, but they never really define it thoroughly.

The study also shows that most of the party’s thoughts on heritage are in line with the hegemonic heritage discourse. Some have argued that the Sweden Democrats are abusing ”the heritage”, but I would rather say that they are using it, in a way that corresponds well with the concept “cultural heritage” as it has been defined by all those involved with it (i.e. journalists, writers, scholars, policy makers, museal personnel, and the public through public debate in the press). The example of this Swedish nationalistic party, shows what the cultural heritage concept of today can be when driven to its peak.

Vem möter du i biblioteket?: En diskursanalytisk studie av folkbibliotekarieyrket i DIK:s facktidning 1974–20142017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to study articles in DIK’s librarian labor union newspaper over a time period of 40 years, 1974–2014, to obtain knowledge about depictions of public librarians. The aim is also to examine which discourses that can be identified in these depictions. Discourse analysis believes that the language contributes to realizing reality and by studying articles in DIK’s newspaper an understanding of the public librarian profession can be provided. This essay may contribute to increased understanding, new perspectives and deeper knowledge of the public librarian profession.

The thesis' theoretical and methodological framework is discourse analysis, more specific Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe's discourse theory. Relevant discourse theoretical concepts are applied in a text analysis of the empirical material, articles in DIK’s newspaper. In the analysis, the public librarian profession were studied from four angles: knowledge and skills, tasks, characteristic features and the profession. The results of the analysis reveal that the public librarians have knowledge and skills in several subjects, for example in service, literature and information. It has also shown that there is a breadth and variety in librarian tasks. The analysis has also shown that there are positive and negative statements about the characteristic features of librarians and that the profession for a number of reasons, such as female dominance and low pay, has a low status. Four discourses were identified in the material, and with that four ways to understand librarians were identified: The Literature Discourse, The Information Discourse, The Service Discourse and The Status Discourse.
