Dissolving with Lazarus: Late Ancient Liturgical Bodies in Pieces2017Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 71, nr 2, s. 173-198Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The day before Palm Sunday, early Christians celebrated the biblical figure of Lazarus. This article surveys late ancient liturgical compositions for this feast. It explores the way in which the authors described the disintegration and reintegration of Lazarus’ body. His death and reinvigoration surely point towards the resurrection of Christ; yet the detailed and morbid displays which these liturgical texts create suggest that the authors worked with more complex pallets. I argue that we should resist the temptation of a simplistic reading of the Byzantine liturgical past. Scholars are currently rediscovering the subtleties of Byzantine literary composition, but religious texts are still largely viewed as simple, didactic and naïve. Lazarus actually appears as a grotesquely dynamic corpse. At the same time his body is just as ordinary and human as any of the people who heard the macabre stories. He was them. This makes the liturgical works into texts about the churchgoers’ decay. I suggest that the authors projected the chilling imagery of dissolving bodies with an aim similar to that of modern writers of grotesque literature; it speaks to the ambivalent awareness of human mortality. The homilists and hymnographers addressed the abject embodied experiences of their congregation.

    Foucault, Magritte and negative theology beyond representation2013Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 67, nr 1, s. 63-79Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Recent theological writings on the French philosopher Michel Foucault often mention Foucault in relation to negative theology. This article discusses the negative motion in Foucauldian thinking through Foucault's essay on the Belgian painter René Magritte. On the basis of this discussion, the article sketches a renewed account of negative theology. It is a post-representational account of negative theology in accordance with Foucault's critique of representation, as presented in his Magritte essay.

    Justifying political decisions through theological arguments2016Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 70, nr 2, s. 179-198Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between religion and politics in Muslim contexts has been discussed from many different perspectives. One of these proceeds from the theory of religious politics, according to which political thoughts and decisions are justified and legitimated with the support of theological explanations. A central premise is that religion is able to provide a moral sanction for political actions and decisions. This article discusses the relationship between religion and politics in a Shiite context in pre-modern and early modern times, based on the theory of religious politics. The central point is that the Shiite scholars, during the Safavid era (1501–1736), based their secular viewpoints on interpretations of the Quran, the hadiths, and the 12 Imamite Shiite sources, especially the specific ideas about the hidden imam, to legitimate their own collaboration with the Safavid kings. According to this theory, the religious politics occur within an ideological context such as a nation-state and specific historical circumstances. The religious legitimizations of political actions are usually intertwined with local and historical identities. As such the religious ideologies reflect not a return to tradition per se, but rather an ideological reconstruction of tradition for a new context. The ultimate question is which came first? Did the theological interpretations precede secular and political decisions, or was it the other way around? The theory of religious politics arrives at the conclusion that the theological explanations are employed to legitimate traditions of political thought and secular decisions and not the reverse.

    Nathan Söderblom's Ecumenical Cope: A visualization of a theological and ecumenical concept2012Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 66, nr 1, s. 62-79Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Söderblom ordered a new Episcopal cope for the 1925 Life and Work Conference in Stockholm. The cope was made after Söderblom's own instructions and is a visualization of Söderblom's ideas. His concept of evangelical catholicity and ecumenism, the continuity of the church and his view on episcopacy were transformed into a beautiful piece of art. With the cope, Söderblom expressed his view on the position of the see of Uppsala in Christianity and his own role and responsibilities among the church leaders of the world. The cope is an interpretation of Söderblom's theological and ecumenical concept.

    Religion without Metaphysics2007Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 61, nr 2, s. 163-183Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I will argue for a conception of religion that does not presuppose metaphysics in the traditional sense of the word. In a trivial sense we always have ideas of what is given and are all realists, living by our realist intuitions. But the philosophical crucial question is which conclusions can be reasonably drawn from this. In part I, I will argue against metaphysical realism in general. In part II, I will argue against its materialist challenge by showing in what sense it too can be conceived of as an example of metaphysical realism. In part III, I will show why there is no point in defending or in arguing against religion en bloc. Finally in part IV, I will argue for a conception of religion without metaphysics in the traditional sense by taking account of the existential function religion actually has in human life.

    Religious language and the task of theology in a scientific and eco-sensitive age2014Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 68, nr 1227, s. 56-72Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper I shall evaluate a trend in theology; an attempt to naturalize and reinterpret the task of theology and the nature and function of religious language. I propose that religious naturalists adopt a pragmatic view of religious language, and I also introduce the notion of Ecologically Mindful Attitude (EMA). I reach the conclusion that this pragmatic understanding of religion is not successful and that it can be challenged on several levels.

    Struggling with reason: Dostoevsky as moral theologian2009Inngår i: Studia Theologica, ISSN 0039-338X, E-ISSN 1502-7791, Vol. 63, nr 2, s. 197-216Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the article is to suggest an interpretation of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov as an advanced theological critique of practical reason. The author of the article argues that Dostoevsky's critique of rationalism can be described as three different models of a struggle with reason. These three mordels are represented by the figures of the three brothers Karamazov and are analysed in relation to the question of the existence of God as it is dealt with in the novel.
