Muhit al-tavarikh (The Sea of Chronicles)2014Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study provides a critical edition of chapters nine and ten of Muḥīṭ al-tavārīkh (The Sea of Chronicles) by Muḥammad Amīn b. Mīrzā Muḥammad Zamān Bukhārī (Ṣūfīyānī). Muḥīṭ al-tavārīkh is a valuable source for the study of late seventeenth-century Central Asian history, historiography, and language. The present work represents the first critical edition of a primary source of Subḥān Qulī Khān’s reign. The ninth chapter (bāb) offers accounts of the Timurid kings, Abulkhayrid/Shaybanid and the first four Ashtarkhanid/Janid khans. The tenth chapter presents a detailed account of the life and times of “the last great” Ashtarkhanid/Janid khan, Subḥān Qulī Bahādur (1682–1702), revealing historical information essential for scholars of the period and region

    Life, As I See It: A Typology of the Post-Revolutionary Persian Novel Written by Women2012Inngår i: Orientalia Suecana, ISSN 0078-6578, E-ISSN 2001-7324, Vol. 60, s. 140-150Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1979 Revolution in Iran, the number of women novelists has increased explosively. One remarkable feature of most post-Revolutionary novels by Iranian women is their great sensitivity towards women’s issues and gender relations, but not all of these novels are of this nature. Novels that focus on social discourses have also been written by women in post-Revolutionary Iran. Nor do all of the novels written by women challenge the traditional institutions or reflect a protest against the situation of Iranian women in post-Revolutionary Iran. The purpose of this paper is to present a typology of the Persian post-Revolutionary novels written by women and the different paths they have taken.

Persian Orthography: Modification or Changeover? (1850-2000)2005Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The present study provides a description of the standardization process of Persian orthography since the introduction of the Arabic alphabet, with a focus on this process in modern times (1850-2000). Using theories related to orthography standardization as its background, this work seeks an explanation for the prolonged standardization process of Persian orthography, and presents the frameworks within which this standardization has been carried out. The most recent state of Persian orthography is presented through an investigation of the current attitudes towards the problems of Persian orthography and possible frameworks for a potential reform, as well as through an investigation of the current tendencies in the manner of presenting different orthographic parameters within Persian contemporary texts. How and by whom the orthography of today’s Persian texts is governed is another aspect to be examined here.

The most important conclusion to be drawn from the present study is that there is a strong tendency towards approving reform proposals that can be integrated with the present orthography, and maintain the present appearance of Persian orthography as much as possible. One of the main reasons behind this tendency is the concern of an interruption in cultural continuity in the event of an alphabet reform or any other drastic change in the present appearance of the orthography. This concern takes into account the political, social, cultural, structural, and economic conditions in Iran, as well as the complexity of language planning projects.

Participial clauses in three works from the Persian learned literature of post-classical period2010Inngår i: Analytica Iranica, Vol. 1, s. 83-113Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

One of the striking features of written Persian of the 16th to 18th century is the vast use of participial clauses in complex sentences. This feature has not been the subject of any detailed study yet.

This period is coincident with the rise and fall of two significant Islamic dynasties in Iran and in the Indian subcontinent, i.e. the Safavids and the Mughals, and two minor ones in Central Asia centered in Bukhara, i.e. Shaybanids (Abulkhayrids and Janibegids) and Ashtarkhanids. The emergence of these dynasties and the political circumstances which were created after their establishment contributed to a new era in cultural and social developments. One of the most important linguistic developments was that New Persian became the literary language of a vast area which stretched from the Indian subcontinent to Central Asia, and the development of dialect variants of Persian.

The present study investigates the usage of participial clauses in three works from the above mentioned period, and from the above-noted regions, namely Iran, Indian subcontinent and Central Asia, where Persian was the literary language. For this purpose we have selected works that belong to the literary genre of historiography. These works are as follows:  1) Tārix-e ‘ālam ārā-ye ‘abbāsi by Eskandar Beg Monshi; 2) Eqbāl-nāme-ye jahāngiri by Mo‘tamed Khan; 3) Mohit al-tavārix by Mohammad Amin b. Mohammad Mirza Zamān Bokhāri Sufiāni.

An Elusive Particle in Persian: The Use of Magar inTārikh-e Beyhaqi2013Inngår i: Orientalia Suecana, ISSN 0078-6578, E-ISSN 2001-7324, Vol. 61, s. 90-106Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Morphologically, magar is made up of ma+agar, which literally means “not+if”. It fulfils several syntacticand pragmatic functions which have shifted over the course of time. This paper focuses on the use of magarin Tārikh-e Beyhaqi (11th century). The study will be conducted within the framework of a functional-structural approach with a pragmatic orientation. We argue that magar is an elusive particle, the precisesyntactic function of which is governed by the context. We also argue that some instances of magarfulfil a pragmatic function that fits into the theory of indirect speech acts.
