Enabling design of performance-controlled sensor network applications through task allocation and reallocation2015Inngår i: Proc. 11th International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems, IEEE Computer Society, 2015, s. 248-253Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Task Graph (ATaG) is a sensor network application development paradigm where the application is visually described by a graph where the nodes correspond to application-level tasks and edges correspond to dataflows. We extend ATaG with the option to add nonfunctional requirements: constraints on end-to-end delay and packet delivery rate. Setting up these constraints at the design phase naturally leads to enabling run-time assurance at the deployment phase, when the conditions of the constraints are used as network's performance goals. We provide both run-time middleware that checks the conditions of these constraints and a central management unit that dynamically adapts the system by doing task reallocation and putting task copies on redundant nodes. Through extensive simulations we show that the system is efficient enough to enable adaptations within tens of seconds even in large networks.

    Abstract [en]

In this demo abstract we present ProFuN TG (Task Graph), a tool for sensor network application development using the data-flow programming paradigm. The tool has support for the whole lifecycle of WSN application: from the initial design of its task graph, task placement on network nodes, execution in a simulated environment, deployment on real hardware, to its automated maintenance through task remapping. ProFuN TG allows to program applications that incorporate quality-of-service requirements, expressed through constraints on task-to-task data flows.

Designing a flexible and low-cost testbed for Wireless Sensor Networks2012Inngår i: International Journal of Ad Hoc and Ubiquitous Computing, ISSN 1743-8225, E-ISSN 1743-8233, Vol. 9, nr 2, s. 111-121Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Setting up a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for an experiment is both time consuming and effort intensive. Many testbeds connect and manage experimental nodes using wires and gateways. It leads to extra cost, extensive setup and maintenance effort and dedicated deployment place. We propose a framework for implementing a flexible and low-cost wireless for sensor network testbed (FIST). FIST consists of only experimental nodes. Both testbed and experiment management are carried out by the nodes wirelessly without extra devices. Thus, the testbed can be easily and quickly deployed anywhere. We present our framework and also a case study using FIST.

Macroprogramming of Wireless Sensor Networks using Task Graphs and Constraint Solving2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Programming a wireless sensor network (WSN) on node level is a tedious, difficult, and error-prone task. A way to address this problem is to use a high-level programming language specifically designed for WSNs. However, we anticipate to go one step further and provide a standard and generic model for macro-level programming of WSNs. We propose a platform for WSNs as a multi-layer abstraction approach for macroprogramming, where, on the highest level of abstraction, the developer uses an interactive graphical interface to specify the features of a sensor network as a data-driven task graph. The task graph expresses the functionality of the entire network as a whole, and it encapsulates the requirements and resource limitations on the network and the sensor nodes, as well as the data flows among the tasks. This platform makes use of several optimization methods, such as constraint programming, to map the tasks to nodes optimally, and to plan the configuration for deployment to maximize the network life time. It makes use of more realistic network abstractions and takes into account the dynamics of WSNs. We present our model for macro-level programming and show that many optimization problems in this context can be solved more efficiently with suitable techniques.

Comparing wireless flooding protocols using trace-based simulations2013Inngår i: EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, ISSN 1687-1472, E-ISSN 1687-1499, s. 169:1-15Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Most wireless multi-hop networks, such as ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks, need network-wide broadcasting, which is best done with a flooding protocol. In this article, we use packet trace information from a real test-bed network to define a simulator for flooding protocol performance studies. Five protocols are compared using the simulator. Trace-based simulations promise to have the benefits of the simulator, such as reducing required work effort and repeatability but still produce results close to the real test-bed or deployment. We propose and evaluate different approaches on how to use collected trace data and how to tune the parameters to achieve the best possible accuracy in comparison with actual test-bed measurements. We study the resulting accuracy of the model so that performance studies know with what confidence a certain conclusion can be made. Using the new trace-based model and knowing its accuracy, we compare the five flooding protocols to gain additional insights into their performance. Finally, by modifying the trace data, we study how real-world effects, such as links with in-between qualities and asymmetric links, influence the different flooding protocols.

Estimating packet delivery ratio for arbitrary packet sizes over wireless links2015Inngår i: IEEE Communications Letters, ISSN 1089-7798, E-ISSN 1558-2558, Vol. 19, nr 4, s. 609-612Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Real life measurements show that on a given wireless link, the packet delivery ratio of different packet lengths varies with longer packets experiencing lower delivery ratios. In this letter, we measure this effect in detail over several different wireless links and technologies. Our results show that the current models are not entirely correct. Hence, we propose a simple modification that rectifies this behavior. Using this new model, we look at how link quality estimation methods can be enhanced to include this modification. Our study shows that the use of two different packet lengths or simple compensation can be used to achieve significantly better estimation of link quality.

    A cellular-centric service architecture for machine-to-machine (M2M) communications2013Inngår i: IEEE wireless communications, ISSN 1536-1284, E-ISSN 1558-0687, Vol. 20, nr 5, s. 143-151Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A machine-to-machine (M2M) communications system is a large-scale network with diverse applications and a massive number of interconnected heterogeneous machines (e. g., sensors, vending machines and vehicles). Cellular wireless technologies will be a potential candidate for providing the last mile M2M connectivity. Thus, the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and IEEE 802.16p, have both specified an overall cellular M2M reference architecture. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), in contrast, has defined a service-oriented M2M architecture. This article reviews and compares the three architectures. As a result, the 3GPP and 802.16p M2M architectures, which are functionally equivalent, complement the ETSI one. Therefore, we propose to combine the ETSI and 3GPP architectures, yielding a cellular-centric M2M service architecture. Our proposed architecture advocates the use of M2M relay nodes as a data concentrator. The M2M relay implements a tunnel-based aggregation scheme which coalesces data from several machines destined to the same tunnel exit-point. The aggregation scheme is also employed at the M2M gateway and the cellular base station. Numerical results show a significant reduction in protocol overheads as compared to not using aggregation at the expense of packet delay. However, the delay rapidly decreases with increasing machine density.

Measuring PHY layer interactions between LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4g networks2017Inngår i: 2017 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking) and Workshops, International Federation for Information Processing, 2017Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Advances in low power wireless communication have resulted in new radio technologies that can achieve long distance communication in energy efficient ways. An emerging problem in this scenario is interference between networks that share the same medium. The fact that these networks have a long transmission range increases the possibility of interference even more. Thus the investigation of how different networks can share the medium independently in a optimal way becomes an essential requirement for the IoT vision. In this poster, we present the first step of this investigation, which is measuring how LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4g PHY layers interfere.

Cross-technology Clear Channel Assessment for Low-Power Wide Area Networks2019Inngår i: Proceedings of The 16th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-Hoc and Smart Systems, 2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Due to their popularity, large coverage areas, and diversity of radio technologies, Low Power Wide Area Networks( LPWAN) will experience high levels of cross-technology interfer-ence. In this work, we  investigate the impact of LoRa interferenceon IEEE 802.15.4 (Wi-SUN) networks. Using hardware experiments, we characterize the interaction between these two verydifferent radio technologies. In particular, we observe that the IEEE 802.15.4 Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) mechanism does not  reliably detect interfering LoRa transmissions. We therefore propose an enhanced CCA mechanism based on a Multi-Layer Perceptron classifier and show that it significantly reduces the number of unsuccessful transmissions, while remaining compatible with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

An analytical energy consumption model for packet transfer over wireless links2012Inngår i: IEEE Communications Letters, ISSN 1089-7798, E-ISSN 1558-2558, Vol. 16, nr 1, s. 30-33Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We provide a detailed analytical model for estimating the total energy consumed to exchange a packet over a wireless link. Our model improves many of the current models by considering details such as consumed energy by processing elements of transceivers, packet retransmission, reliability of links, size of data packets and acknowledgments, and also the data rate of wireless links. To develop the model, we use experimental results based on IEEE 802.15.4 devices to show that consumed energy for receiving erroneous packets is comparable to the consumed energy for receiving error-free packets.

    Abstract [en]

Wireless ad hoc networks will be an important component in future communication systems. The performance of wireless ad hoc networks can be improved by link quality-aware applications. Wireless link quality is dynamic in nature, especially in mobile scenarios. Therefore, accurate and fast packet delivery ratio estimation is a prerequisite to good performance in mobile, multi-hop and multi-rate wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a novel packet delivery ratio estimation method that improves the accuracy and responsiveness of the packet delivery ratio estimation. The proposed link quality estimation components are implemented in a IEEE 802.11b/g test-bed. The experiment results show that the accuracy of the packet delivery ratio estimation can improve up to 50% in mobile scenarios without introducing overhead. We also show the end-to-end performance impact of this improved estimation on route selection using different routing metrics and configurations. The measurement results show that our packet delivery ratio method leads to better route selection in the form of increased end-to-end throughput compared to traditional methods, which respond slowly to the link dynamics.
