    Defining gestural interactions for large vertical touch displays2017Ingår i: Human-Computer Interaction – INTERACT 2017, Springer, 2017, s. 36-55Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As new technologies emerge, so do new ways of interacting with the digital domain. In this paper, the touch interaction paradigm is challenged for use on large touch displays of 65 in. in size. We present a gesture elicitation study with 26 participants carried out on twelve actions commonly used on touch displays. The results and analysis of 312 touch gestures revealed agreement rates for each action. We report several findings including the results of a set of ten unique (and a few secondary) gestures, a taxonomy classifying the defined gestures, a pilot study on the defined gestures, and explicit design implications. We discuss the results and include several important factors for future considerations. We aim at helping future designers and engineers to design interactions for large touch displays

Using rapid prototyping to explore design implications for a pill-dispensing social agent2017Ingår i: Proc. 5th International Conference on Human Agent Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2017, s. 53-59Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The process of managing one's daily intake of medication has been shown to be error-prone for a variety of reasons. In this paper, we explore, through a rapid prototyping approach, the design implications for a social robotic agent intended for dispensing medicine. The process started with initial interviews with medical experts to allow for a better understanding of the design space. Their input helped us realise a low-fidelity, animal-like, robotic prototype for pill-dispensing. We report initial impressions of the prototype from four pharmacists. Based on those findings, we present design implications categorised into: look and feel, social role, desired task, and the agent's presence in a home environment.

When robot personalisation does not help: Insights from a robot-supported learning study2018Ingår i: Proc. 27th International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication, IEEE, 2018, s. 705-712Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the domain of robotic tutors, personalised tutoring has started to receive scientists' attention, but is still relatively underexplored. Previous work using reinforcement learning (RL) has addressed personalised tutoring from the perspective of affective policy learning. However, little is known about the effects of robot behaviour personalisation on user's task performance. Moreover, it is also unclear if and when personalisation may be more beneficial than a robot that adapts to its users and the context of the interaction without personalising its behaviour. In this paper we build on previous work on affective policy learning that used RL to learn what robot's supportive behaviours are preferred by users in an educational scenario. We build a RL framework for personalisation that allows a robot to select verbal supportive behaviours to maximise the user's task progress and positive reactions in a learning scenario where a Pepper robot acts as a tutor and helps people to learn how to solve grid-based logic puzzles. A between-subjects design user study showed that participants were more efficient at solving logic puzzles and preferred a robot that exhibits more varied behaviours compared with a robot that personalises its behaviour by converging on a specific one over time. We discuss insights on negative effects of personalisation and report lessons learned together with design implications for personalised robots.

Investigating deep learning approaches for human-robot proxemics2018Ingår i: Proc. 27th International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication, IEEE, 2018, s. 1093-1098Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we investigate the applicability of deep learning methods to adapt and predict comfortable human-robot proxemics. Proposing a network architecture, we experiment with three different layer configurations, obtaining three different end-to-end trainable models. Using these, we compare their predictive performances on data obtained during a human-robot interaction study. We find that our long short-term memory based model outperforms a gated recurrent unit based model and a feed-forward model. Further, we demonstrate how the created model can be used to create customized comfort zones that can help create a personalized experience for individual users.

Investigating design implications towards a social robot as a memory trainer2017Ingår i: Proc. 5th International Conference on Human Agent Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2017, s. 5-10Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Most currently existing tools for cognitive memory therapy require physical interaction or at least the presence of another person. The goal of this paper is to investigate whether a social robot might be an acceptable solution for a more inclusive therapy for people with memory disorder and severe physical limitations. Applying a user-centered design approach, we conducted semi-structured interviews with five healthcare professionals; four medical doctors and a psychologist, in three iterations followed by a focus group activity. An analysis of the collected data suggests several implications for design with an emphasis on embodiment, social skills, interaction, and memory training exercises.

Exploring the referral and usage of science fiction in HCI literature2018Ingår i: Design, User Experience, and Usability: Part II, Springer, 2018, s. 19-38Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Research on science fiction (sci-fi) in scientific publications has indicated the usage of sci-fi stories, movies or shows to inspire novel Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. Yet no studies have analysed sci-fi in a top-ranked computer science conference at present. For that reason, we examine the CHI main track for the presence and nature of sci-fi referrals in relationship to HCI research. We search for six sci-fi terms in a dataset of 5812 CHI main proceedings and code the context of 175 sci-fi referrals in 83 papers indexed in the CHI main track. In our results, we categorize these papers into five contemporary HCI research themes wherein sci-fi and HCI interconnect: (1) Theoretical Design Research; (2) New Interactions; (3) Human-Body Modification or Extension; (4) Human-Robot Interaction and Artificial Intelligence; and (5) Visions of Computing and HCI. In conclusion, we discuss results and implications located in the promising arena of sci-fi and HCI research.

Social drone companion for the home environment: a user-centric exploration2017Ingår i: Proc. 5th International Conference on Human Agent Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2017, s. 89-96Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recent research has focused on how to facilitate interaction between humans and robots, giving rise to the field of human robot interaction. A related research area is human-drone interaction (HDI), investigating how interaction between humans and drones can be expanded in novel and meaningful ways. In this work, we explore the use of drones as companions in a home environment. We present three consecutive studies addressing user requirements and design space of companion drones. Following a user-centered approach, the three stages include online questionnaire, design workshops, and simulated virtual reality (VR) home environment. Our results show that participants preferred the idea of a drone companion at home, particularly for tasks such as fetching items and cleaning. The participants were also positive towards a drone companion that featured anthropomorphic features.

Critical robotics: Exploring a new paradigm2018Ingår i: Proc. 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2018, s. 972-975Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, we have witnessed a rise in voices advocating more human-centered and holistic approaches to research on robot technology. Towards this end, the adoption of broader perspectives and the exploration of critical questions related to the design and study of these technologies in everyday life have become increasingly pressing. In this workshop, we aim for researchers and industry experts to experience hands-on approaches to explore how we can address critical human-centered perspectives in robot research and whether critical questions within the area of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) can be considered a new emerging paradigm: critical robotics. We invite people from a variety of disciplines both inside and outside of HRI and HCI (e.g., education, media and communication, philosophy of technology, applied ethics) to submit a short position paper and join us in an open exploration of this burning topic already identified by leading researchers in HRI and HCI.

#naorobot: Exploring Nao Discourse on Twitter2016Ingår i: Proceedings Of The 28Th Australian Computer-Human Interaction Conference (OZCHI 2016) / [ed] Parker, C, 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Nao robot from Aldebaran Robotics is a fairly popular humanoid robot. In this study, we aimed to conduct a discourse analysis around the Nao through content analysis of posts on Twitter (N=235 tweets in English). The analysis aimed to understand discourse around the robot, the usage trends of the robot, the existence of social relationships between user and robot and if there were any patterns in tweeting. Our main results show that the Nao is attributed with high anthropomorphism and social rapport and the popular usages of the robot extend to research and education but not to health and domestic applications. In conclusion, we speculate on our results obtained and present a direction for future research.

Scientometric analysis of the HAI conference2017Ingår i: Proc. 5th International Conference on Human Agent Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2017, s. 45-51Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The HAI conference is the premier discussion venue on the topic of Human Agent Interaction. In this paper we present our findings from the scientometric analysis of full papers from the HAI conference since its inception to date. We extracted various bibliometric measures and qualitatively coded our sample of 107 full papers over the 4 years of the conference. Our results show that the conference has not really grown rapidly and attracts papers from predominantly Asian Pacific regions. User studies were the common research methodology undertaken in HAI papers and humanoid robots are the popular agent of choice. Domains such as Education and Health were surprisingly underrepresented whereas communication was the focus of almost half of the papers. We also report on a mini comparison with the ICSR and IVA conference as a benchmarking strategy, which provides us with some reflections on how the HAI conference can be moved forward. In conclusion, we speculate on our findings and provide some insights to the organizers and steering committee of the HAI conference.

An image based non-verbal behaviour analysis of HRI2017Ingår i: Social Robotics, Springer, 2017, s. 23-31Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Acceptance and engagement of users towards social robots is the yardstick by which the success and efficacy of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is measured. Metrics such as acceptance and engagement are normally measured through subjective (such as interviews) or objective measures (such as non-verbal behaviour). In this study, we report on a methodologically novel process of monitoring non-verbal behaviour of humans in visual images with a social robot. We qualitatively code pictures of humans with the Nao robot as found on Instagram. We specifically coded the emotions of the users as depicted by their facial expressions as well as their social distance maintained towards the robot. Our results show that in general humans persist with an overall positive, enthusiastic and engaging behaviour towards the Nao. Moreover, females were found to be much more expressive in their responses towards the Nao as compared to males - a gender effect. We conclude with the implications of our results and possible avenues of future research on the topic of measuring human engagement with social robots through visual stimuli.

Endowing a robotic tutor with empathic qualities: Design and pilot evaluation2018Ingår i: International Journal of Humanoid Robotics, ISSN 0219-8436, Vol. 15, nr 6, artikel-id 1850025Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As increasingly more research efforts are geared towards creating robots that can teach and interact with children in educational contexts, it has been speculated that endowing robots with artificial empathy may facilitate learning. In this paper, we provide a background to the concept of empathy, and how it factors into learning. We then present our approach to equipping a robotic tutor with several empathic qualities, describing the technical architecture and its components, a map-reading learning scenario developed for an interactive multitouch table, as well as the pedagogical and empathic strategies devised for the robot. We also describe the results of a pilot study comparing the robotic tutor with these empathic qualities against a version of the tutor without them. The pilot study was performed with 26 school children aged 10–11 at their school. Results revealed that children in the test condition indeed rated the robot as more empathic than children in the control condition. Moreover, we explored several related measures, such as relational status and learning effect, yet no other significant differences were found. We further discuss these results and provide insights into future directions.

Exploring users' reactions towards tangible implicit probes for measuring human-robot engagement2017Ingår i: Social Robotics, Springer, 2017, s. 402-412Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we present an exploratory study of the use of tangible implicit probes to gauge the user's social engagement with a robot. Our results show that users' paying attention to the robot's implicit probes is related to higher social engagement, but also that introducing implicit probes can lead to a more positive interaction with a robot. As we observed that users in our study started paying more attention to the implicit probes after they had encountered them, the need for careful design to capture changes in social engagement over time is justified here. Finally, we discuss some of the user recommendations to design better implicit probes.

Designing for experiences with socially interactive robots2018Ingår i: Proc. 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2018, s. 948-951Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Socially interactive technologies are emerging as one of the predominant technologies of the future. In this workshop, we aim to discuss the emerging field of Social Robotic technologies with a particular focus on interaction design methodologies used in the design process. The workshop will investigate how researchers have approached designing social robots and what we can learn from the interaction design field for future designs. The main activities of the workshop will encompass two interactive sessions and a discussion panel on approaches to inspire the design of socially interactive robots. In particular, we focus on experience-driven design methods involving rituals and memorable experiences with social robots.

Exploring proxemics for human-drone interaction2017Ingår i: Proc. 5th International Conference on Human Agent Interaction, New York: ACM Press, 2017, s. 81-88Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We present a human-centered designed social drone aiming to be used in a human crowd environment. Based on design studies and focus groups, we created a prototype of a social drone with a social shape, face and voice for human interaction. We used the prototype for a proxemic study, comparing the required distance from the drone humans could comfortably accept compared with what they would require for a nonsocial drone. The social shaped design with greeting voice added decreased the acceptable distance markedly, as did present or previous pet ownership, and maleness. We also explored the proximity sphere around humans with a social shaped drone based on a validation study with variation of lateral distance and heights. Both lateral distance and the higher height of 1.8 m compared to the lower height of 1.2 m decreased the required comfortable distance as it approached.
