Weapons on the Weak: The impact of Small Arms and Major Conventional Weapons Imports on the Intentional Targeting of Civilians in Intrastate Conflicts2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Academics and practitioners often assume that arms and violence against civilians are positively correlated. Existing research on small arms and light weapons (SALW) and major conventional weapons (MCW) imports, however, find that arms are a weak explanatory factor for intrastate violence. When the focus is on arms imports’ impact on the level of one-sided violence (OSV) specifically, earlier studies’ findings suggest that the comparative organisational size of armed actors is an important conditioning variable that influences the direction and magnitude of the impact arms imports have on rebel and government perpetrated OSV. Using OLS regression models, this thesis finds that increasing SALW imports are linked to no increase in the level of rebel perpetrated OSV and a marginal decrease for the level of OSV perpetrated by large government forces. MCW imports have a negative correlation for large rebel groups and governments, but no impact for small rebel groups or government forces. In all specifications, the magnitude of the impact arms imports conditional on troop size have on rebel or government perpetrated OSV remains small. This suggests the need for policymakers to focus on humanitarian and economic interventions, rather than arms when pursuing protection of civilians.

Adding requirements on customers to current quality models toimprove quality: development of a customer ‐ vendor interaction2010Ingår i: 13th QMOD conference on Quality and Service Sciences ICQSS 2010 / [ed] Jens J. Dahlgaard, Linköping University, Sweden, Visby: Gotland University , 2010, s. 1-9Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In most descriptions of business development and models for Corporate Governance, contacts between supplier and customer are for the most part focused on the supplier’s responsibility to identify and document customer requirements in order to enable the organization to meet customer requirements (stated and unstated). In the actual contact between customer and supplier it has been observed in several cases that there are aspects of the interaction not described in traditional theoretical quality models. What seems to be missing is a more explicit requirement for customers and for customers' actions. The logic is that a qualified customer performing based on supplier instructions will result in a better performing product. The apparent lack of theoretical models describing this aspect indicates that this is an interesting area for research and development.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight a seemingly "forgotten" area within quality management, which is the lack of requirements put on customers in quality models.  The first objective is to review existing quality models to explore the extent of requirement on customers included. The second objective is to propose additions to current models that include requirements placed on customers.

A limited review of the award criteria and the most common models for quality and improvement techniques shows that there is no explicit and documented way to set requirements for customers. Our interpretation is that EFQM is the model closest to our description of “demands on customer” due to their clauses connected to “partnership”.

The ISO/DIS 26000 is moving the requirements further against the customer for the social responsibility than the quality standards are doing.

Further research could focus on how requirements on customer will affect the performance of the entire supply chain both from a quality and social point of view.

Integrated Management Systems: advantages, problems and possibilities2010Ingår i: 13th Toulon-Verona Conference: Organizational Excellence in Service / [ed] Jacques Martin, Toulon University, 2010, s. 1-12Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Effective management in the globalized world requires an effective, efficient and flexible management system. Effective could be interpreted as addressing all relevant stakeholder concerns in a context of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Efficient would mean that it does the job with low resource use. Flexibility requires that changed conditions and new requirements easily can be included. Many organizations are already working with Integrated Management Systems (IMS). Interesting questions are to what extent current integration covers the above mentioned needs and if not what changes are needed. This conceptual paper looks at the advantages and problems of integration. Possibilities for development of fully integrated management systems are studied from the perspective of managing stakeholder needs, with the forthcoming ISO 26000 – “Guidance on social responsibility”, as inspiration. Results show that there are advantages in integration, but that the scope and level of integration often is limited. A conceptual model for integrating all stakeholder needs in value networks is presented.

‘Oh my god what is happening?’: historic second home communities and post-disaster nostalgia2020Ingår i: Journal of Heritage TourismArtikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Nostalgia is an important concept in the study of heritage tourism, especially as a push factor, but less attention is devoted to how nostalgia influences place attachment and vice versa, especially in relation to both individual and collective community experiences. While place attachment has been discussed in the context of second homes, nostalgia has received little attention, with none directed specifically at historic second home communities or those which had recently experienced a disaster. Therefore, this paper presents an analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted among second homeowners in Ocean Beach, New York, which is a century-old second home community with a rich local heritage that was hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The findings show that the respondents display different aspects of nostalgia, in particular endo- and meso- nostalgia. This work conceptualizes meso-nostalgia as an umbrella term for the previously discussed nostalgias which focus on the gray area between personal and collective memories. The findings also show the respondents’ deep connection to the second home landscape, but there was a marked difference between respondents with inherited second homes and those who had purchased them wherein inherited homeowners’ nostalgia was closer to those of permanent residents in previous studies.

Identifying child functioning from an ICF-CY perspective: everyday life situations explored in measures of participation2011Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 33, nr 13-14, s. 1230-1244Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. This study was part of a larger work to develop an authentic measure consisting of code sets for self- or proxy-report of child participation. The aim was to identify common everyday life situations of children and youth based on measures of participation.

Method. The study was descriptive in nature and involved several stages: systematic search of literature to find articles presenting measures for children and youth with disabilities, identifying measures in selected articles, linking items in included measures to the ICF-CY, analysing content in measures presented as performance and participation and identifying aggregations of ICF-CY codes across these measures.

Results. A large number of measures for children and youth with disabilities were identified but only 12 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A slight distinction in content and age appropriateness appeared. Measures presented as performance covered all the ICF-CY Activities and Participation chapters, whereas measures presented as participation covered five of nine chapters. Three common everyday life situations emerged from the measures: Moving around, Engagement in play and Recreation and leisure.

Conclusion. Only a small number of life situations for children and youth emerged from items in selected measures, thus, other sources are needed to identify more everyday life situations.

Sustainable Food Systems: Leveraging Producer-Retailer Relationships2024Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: An unsustainable food system in Sweden, marked by power imbalances, limited opportunities for smaller producers, and a lack of collaboration, demands solutions. Many workers in the food system operate as smaller producers, while the retail sector is highly concentrated, dominated by a few major retailers. Due to their significant market share, these retailers have the potential to drive production improvements, sustainability, and innovation by actively supporting smaller producers. However, if these issues remain unaddressed, the entire food system risks becoming increasingly vulnerable to future disruptions. This thesis aims to explain the dynamics within the Swedish food value chain, focusing on the collaboration between established retailers and smaller producers. It seeks to understand how this collaboration can be improved by both parties to foster a more sustainable food system. Through qualitative semi-structured interviews employing a dual-perspective approach from both producers and retailers, it sought an understanding of both actors’ perspectives regarding their current experiences and perceptions. Both producers and retailers acknowledge the need for collaboration, but challenges persist, particularly expressed by the producers. The main theory used, The Ladder of Partnership, highlights the necessity for trust, mutual understanding, and investment in collaboration. While some companies are making efforts, more is required for a sustainable food system. Given the retailer’s market influence, they should lead by creating opportunities for smaller producers, making strategic decisions about market inclusion, and excluding less sustainable options. The thesis advocates for accountability and shared responsibility among all actors in the food system to achieve a sustainable future. The study concludes that the Swedish food value chain relies on collaboration among various actors, and without it, the system's functionality would be compromised.

Meaning-Making Coping With COVID-19 in Academic Settings: The Case of Sweden2021Ingår i: Illness, crisis and loss, ISSN 1054-1373, E-ISSN 1552-6968Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we map and describe the coping methods used by members of the university community in Sweden to deal with the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic. This study, which used simple random sampling, was quantitative. It employed a modified version of the RCOPE instrument as well as items from earlier studies of meaning-making coping in Sweden. Among participants (n = 277, 64% women), the most frequently used coping method was nature as a resource in dealing with stress and sadness, followed by listening to the sounds of surrounding nature and thinking of life as part of a greater whole; these coping methods were the most common in all subgroups studied. We used a cultural perspective to better understand the application of certain meaning-making coping methods.

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis examines the copyright law with the purpose of sorting out the consequences and the effects of the law impacted on libraries. The theories used are mainly discourse analysis and public domain theory. At the centre of the examination is the effects that copyright law bring to libraries and their ability to perform their work. A major part of this thesis is gathered around the analysis of the presumptive key words that give the structures of copyright law the possibility to claim rightfulness. This is an outspoken strategy to illustrate the discourse of copyright law. Through the whole working process the author is trying to keep a critical point of view. The literature that is used consists to the biggest parts of texts written as an examination of the copyright law and the effects of the law. The author also uses legislations and laws regulating libraries work in society. The goal of the examination is to point out and discuss the friction that appears when one system of intellectual property is institutionalized in society. With this comes the mission of opening a discussion concerning the possibilities for libraries to “keep going strong” in a time deeply influenced and regulated by copyright law.

Infoteket om funktionshinder: Information om funktionshinder som vägen till empowerment2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master’s thesis is to investigate a information center called ”Infoteket om funktionshinder”. The purpose of Infoteket is to collect information about disabilities and make it accessible to people with disabilities, their relatives and public. In this survey I will analyze how Infoteket can help people with disabilities to achieve empowerment. I use empowerment as a theoretical framework as Jay A. Conger and Rabindra N. Kanungo describes it in terms of sense of control and self-efficacy. For people with disabilities, empowerment is about ability to control his own destiny. The key to empowerment is information. My second theoretical framework is Carol C. Kuhlthaus’ principle of uncertainty. I’ve found it possible to apply the phases from uncertainty to understanding to the information search process within the process of diag-nostics.The main method has been qualitative interviews where the informants have been selected according to their professional role. I have also studied Meeting Minutes and conducted a quantitative survey of visitor statis-tics.Infotekets’ role to promote empowerment lies in the ability to examine the quality and reliability of infor-mation about disabilities. A close collaboration with authorities makes it possible to ensure the quality. An im-portant criterion for quality is scientific foundation and accessibility. The literature must be readable for the public rather than professional. To promote empowerment it’s also important to reach the target groups. I have discussed if it makes any difference whether the information is available at the library or the habilitation. The results show little differ-ence, but there are some disabilities that are more difficult to reach through habilitation. That’s why I believe that the library is an important complement to habilitation. This is a two years master’s thesis within Library and Information science.

Rumours Matter: A Literature study on Honour killings Focusing on the link between gender, religion, and rumours2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This literature study investigates the link between gender, religion, and honour related violence with a focus on the intersection of rumours. Rumours as an intersection of honour will help to find out the answers to the research questions. The literature study concentrates on two honour killings cases, Fadime ’s and Sorya M. The research questions, therefore, will focus on three themes, religion and honour, gender, and honour and rumours and the side effects onMuslim women. At the end of the 20th century lots of families moved to Sweden; from different regions from the Middle East such as Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt; due to conflict. Those families like many other migrants brought their traditions and beliefs. Some of them successfully integrated into Swedish society while others; refused to integrate, holding their beliefs hard and ignoring some Swedish law and policy. The concept of honour killings was brought from theMiddle East, a term which will be explained further in the paper. Three Arabic migrant women interviewed in this study in order to discover the meaning of rumours and how it relates to honour killings. The results show that gender differences existed in Fadime and Soraya ’s case. Rumoursas honour intersection could cause to honour killings and violence. However, the term rumours were not discussed in previous literature was not mentioned in other papers.Honour killings exist in the Swedish society and the Middle Eastern society, but it is not related to the Islamic religion, rather than a tradition, therefore, the old Middle Eastern societies were based on power rather than gender equality and justice.

Keywords: Honour killings, Religion, Gender, Rumours, Middle East, Islam.

The magic bullet against semi-automatic weapons: A quantitative study about the effect of gender mainstreaming in peace processes 2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Women and men experience conflict and peace processes differently. The thesis builds on the idea of feminist policy and gender mainstreaming that suggests women should be substantially included within and around all policy decisions including peace processes, not only to provide gender equality but also because inclusion leads to more long-lasting and qualitative solutions. The purpose of this thesis is to examine if gender mainstreaming in the form of engendered language in peace agreements affects post-conflict sexual violence. To achieve this, a systematic large-N study with OLS regression analysis was conducted. The hypothesis was that engendered language in peace agreements would lead to a smaller prevalence of post-conflict conflict-related sexual violence and hence the correlation between the two would be negative. The findings rather show that there is a positive correlation between the two on a 95 percent significance level, generating questions regarding both measurements of the prevalence of post-conflict conflict-related sexual violence and about the effectiveness of gender mainstreaming in peace agreements. Hence, the general conclusion of the thesis is that gender mainstreaming in peace agreements as a ‘magic bullet’ is not the complete answer in the struggle towards gender equality in post-conflict situations.

The Price of Prosperity: Investigating Oil Dependence, Ethnic Group Characteristics, and Civil Armed Conflict2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to explain why some groups experience civil armed conflict over oil whilst others do not. Given the context argued by previous research which asserts that State oil-dependence significantly increases the risk for civil armed conflict onset, I hypothesize that group actors are likely to experience civil armed conflict over oil when they possess strong group organizational capabilities. I argue this because group actors who do not possess the military resources to go to war would rationally not do it considering the relatively low chance of success of resource-less war-waging. While State oil-dependence theoretically provides group actors with reasons and opportunities to fight by generating greed and grievances, greed and grievances alone are not able to provide the fighting capacity needed for a group to initiate civil war over oil. This implies a need for the group actor to be well-organized in order to have the capabilities to go to war over oil. This study employs a structured focused comparison of four empirical cases, and finds that group actors are likely to experience civil armed conflict over oil when they possess high levels of ethnic homogeneity and pre-existing organizational history.

Political Ideas and Behaviour of Armed Groups: A comparative analysis of armed groups’ ideology and repertoires of sexual violence during the conflict in Darfur 2003-20062017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study under what conditions armed groups practice different repertoires of sexual violence, by studying ideology’s influence on behaviour. This will be explored through a structured focused comparison of three armed groups active in the conflict in Darfur 2003-2006, the Janjaweed, Sudan’s Liberation Army/Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement. The theory suggest that a strong implemented ideology will lead to control over behaviour and values, hence sexual violence will be practice in line with organizational objectives and ideas, either instrumental or not practiced at all. Consequently, a weak ideological framework will lead to variation in socialization processes and an opportunistic repertoire.  The findings correlate as expected by the hypothesis, while data constraints call for caution. The results suggests a broadening of the theoretical framework as well as further studies on the suggested causal mechanism, combatant socialization, to examine how, and under what circumstances, behaviours are spread as a social practice among combatants.

Unequal and Violent: Post-conflict Contexts for Women: A study on the consequences of fragmentation of the women's movement during peace processes2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research has not fully addressed the causal processes embedded in participation of women’s groups in peace processes, and the potential outcomes achieved by their participation. This thesis seeks to contribute to this topic by analyzing the research question under what conditions do peace processes contribute to unequal and dangerous societies for women? And the theorized relationship is that ‘the presence of fragmentation of the women’s movement during peace negotiations tends to result in higher prevalence of inequality and violence against women in post-conflict societies’, because fragmentation will contribute to upholding patriarchal norms that facilitate violence towards women through portraying men as top-dogs and women as under-dogs. Structured Focused Comparison is the method used, and questionnaires are developed for fragmentation and post-conflict inequality and violence against women. Two cases are studied and compared: Guatemala and Chiapas in Mexico. The findings show very little support for the hypothesis, although the results are inconclusive.

Big Data Infrastructure For Cloud Computing2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

It is becoming increasingly common for "cloud" organizations to provide informationtechnology services and for businesses and individuals alike to use information technologyresources in new ways due to cloud computing. Cloud computing security issues and softwarefailures are examined in the literature survey. Papers were examined for the review using amodified version of the procedure Okoli and Schabram (2010) described, but only 12 wereincluded in the final output. Even though numerous security flaws and solutions have beendiscovered, it has become evident that much of the current research is just theoretical. As aresult of this analysis, future research should pay more attention to these security issues.

The impacts of Airbnb in Athens, Lisbon and Milan: a rent gap theory perspective2020Ingår i: Current Issues in TourismArtikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The 2007–2008 Global Financial Crisis profoundly impacted the housing markets, particularly of the so-called PIGS countries. Main cities in Portugal, Italy and Greece have seen a sharp decrease in house prices and rent value since 2010. At the same time, the rise of Airbnb has contributed to the reframing of housing market demand in cities, with an increase of temporary lettings in prime urban tourist areas. Understandably, this has direct implications for local residents, with renters’ displacement, tourism gentrification and raising cases of tourismphobia. This article provides insights from three cities – Athens, Lisbon and Milan – to show how the dynamics in the housing market and the boost of Airbnb over the last decade are steadily changing the urban populations of the aforementioned cities. This research builds upon the rent gap theory and the Luke’s’ Power Theory to illustrate how Airbnb is fostering a new form of urban displacement at a faster rate than traditional housing gentrification, with the renting of prime residential areas to tourists.

”I NEVER GIVE UP ON PEOPLE”: Community Leaders’ Belief in Returnee Redeemability2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Following the onset of the Syrian Civil War, the issue of foreign fighters has gained substantial attention, not least as thousands of Europeans travelled to align themselves with armed groups in the conflict. Although not a new phenomenon historically speaking, this caused widespread concern, particularly when some of these travelers began to return to their home countries. Consequently, this caused some practitioners to advocate for reintegration measures. This study focuses on the latter by combining DDR and criminology literature to explore the role of community leaders in reintegration processes. Belief in Redeemability among community leaders is identified as a favorable condition for reintegration. By exploring Belief in Redeemability among community leaders in Vivalla and Varberga/Oxhagen, the study attempts to further develop theoretical approaches within the field, as well as contribute with further insight to peacebuilding in non-conflict settings. The data consists of 9 in-depth interviews which were analyzed through a focused, structured comparison of discursive themes. The findings display discursive themes which may indicate that encounters between community leaders and Returnees affect how leaders legitimize attitudes associated with a Belief in Redeemability.

Beyond toll-free lines and complaints boxes: A study of accountability and participation in humanitarian action in Chad2020Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we look further into Oxfam and Action Against Hunger’s use of the concepts of accountability and participation, how the concepts are informing the programming of humanitarian interventions as well as their materialization in the implementation of the programs in Chad. The study is based on a literature review with secondary sources as the basis of the research material. Scholars debating the concepts provide for the point of departure and the case study is based on the project and program proposals from the organizations themselves.

The thesis attempts to demonstrate Oxfam and Action Against Hunger’s degree of fulfilment of the frameworks relating to accountability and participation currently available, in regards of two ongoing interventions in Chad. The result of the research positively demonstrates that the organization uphold their commitments on paper, and to some extent invites the reader to understand the practical action used to adhere to the concepts. It further indicates a lack of insight into what level of accountability and participation which is upheld prior to the identification of activities and the methodology uses in the needs assessment.

Centrum för lättläst: Ur ett domänanalytiskt perspektiv2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two years master thesis in Library and information science is to study the foundation Centrum för lättläst and its work regarding information use with focus on information structures and information needs. The aim is also to examine how Centrum för lättläst cooperate with Swedish libraries to promote the work concerning people with reading disabilities. This master thesis applies a domain analytic theory and method inspired by Birger Hjørland. The domain analysis is confined to examine ontology, epistemology, sociology, empirical user studies, document and genre studies and studies of structures and institutions in scientific communication. The main source material consists of information from the homepage of Centrum för lättläst. The result of the domain analysis describes the ontology which implies to produce easy-to-read texts. The epistemology constitutes of regulations from the Swedish government regarding the work with easy-to-read literacy. The sociology represents several organizations and authorities connected to easy-to-read literacy. The domain analysis has also identified Centrum för lättläst’s target groups and their information needs which are varying. The study present numerous of strategies composed by Centrum för lättläst to satisfy the information needs of the target groups. Furthermore; the domain analysis has distinguished the information resources Centrum för lättläst use to distribute and make information accessible which are represented by documents within the domain. The result also shows that Centrum för lättläst’s work with information use includes important operators in the domain which contributes to endorse the information needs of the targets groups. Finally the domain analysis has examined the collaboration between Centrum för lättläst and libraries in Sweden, where the result illustrate procedures made by Centrum för lättläst in order to assist libraries in their work with easy-to-read literacy and the target groups.

"...it is time to bring the body back into the information field": En undersökning om icke-verbal kommunikation på bibliotek och möjligheten att med skådespelarövningar höja bibliotekariers icke-verbala kompetens2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this two-years master’s thesis is to examine the role of the body and the importance of nonverbal communication in the library workplace and to explore the possibility of becoming more nonverbally skilled. For this purpose a course was developed and presented to nine librarians in a public library in the vicinity of Stockholm in February, 2011. Qualitative interviews with the librarians were conducted after the course.

Important theories for this work were Annemaree Lloyd’s thoughts on corporeality, Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical sociology and John Dewey’s learning by doing. Theories concerning what communication and nonverbal communication really are were essential, as was literature that shows that nonverbal communication is an important aspect in the profession of the librarian.

Nonverbal signals of importance in the library setting were identified as being mainly eye contact, smiling, bodily movement towards the library user, tone of voice, proxemics (spatial distances), chronemics (time) and haptics (touch). The study also shows that the design of the library and librarians’ worktools interact with the possibility to communicate nonverbally.

The course consisted of exercises normally used in the training of actors. This was based on the theory of Erving Goffman. The learning process was an example of situated learning in that it took place in the library. It also gave the participants an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience of nonverbal skills with each other. After the course the participants were given questionnaires with questions about their attitudes and experiences of nonverbal communication and their view on the course. After a week a follow-up questionnaire was distributed, in order to find out if the course had in any way had an impact on their work performance.

The investigation shows that nonverbal skills play an important role in the work of the librarian. Training in these skills has long been neglected, since they have for the most part been taken for granted. This study shows, however, that this kind of training is important. The librarians who took part in the course testify that the exercises gave them valuable practice. Nonverbal skills can be taught and learned: and “it is time to bring the body back into the information field”.

    Life-table representations of family dynamics in the 21st century2017Ingår i: Demographic Research, ISSN 1435-9871, Vol. 37, nr 35, s. 1081-1230Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND A key resource for cross-national comparative research on family dynamics (Andersson and Philipov 2002) is seriously outdated.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS We provide an update of the life-table estimates by Andersson and Philipov (2002) based on data from the Generations and Gender Surveys and other related surveys in 18 countries across Europe and the United States.

RESULTS Life-table estimates of family formation of women and men, union dynamics, and children’s experience of family disruption and family formation demonstrate the degree of variation in family dynamics across countries.

CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide the basis for more in-depth research on the causes and consequences of differences in family dynamics across contexts.

CONTRIBUTION The Appendix of the current manuscript is a new resource for comparative research on family dynamics in the early 21st century.

Negotiated Settlements and The International Criminal Court: A quantitative study on how the levels of ICC involvement affects the likelihood of reaching a negotiated settlement2024Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between the International Criminal Court and peace negotiations has been a topic of discussion for the past two decades. Despite numerous contributions, the effects the ICC has on peace processes continue to draw different conclusions. In this thesis the relationship between the level of ICC involvement and negotiated settlements is explored. With the theoretical argument being based on bargaining theory the proposed hypothesis predicts that the likelihood of reaching a negotiated settlement will decrease when there is a higher level of ICC involvement. This is because the ICC is expected to move the bargaining range closer to either side A or side B’s value for war. The hypothesis is tested using a quantitative research design using data from the UCDP Conflict Termination Dataset between 2002-2019. Findings from the logistic regression show support for the proposed hypothesis.

The UN as a Peace Enforcer: A Quantitative Study on the Prospects of Chapter VII-missions2020Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The robust turn in peacekeeping has meant that an increasing number of UN peacekeeping missions are mandated under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. Chapter VII authorizes the peacekeepers to use force to implement the mandate. This trend has received criticism from several scholars, arguing it undermines the effectiveness of the peacekeepers. However, few quantitative studies have examined the consequences of authorizing missions using Chapter VII. This study investigates how UN peacekeeping missions mandated under Chapter VII manage to reduce combat violence in internal armed conflicts. Drawing on existing theories on how peacekeeping affects conflicts, this study argues that missions mandated under Chapter VII will decrease the level of combat violence. The study uses quantitative data on the number of battle-related deaths in internal armed conflicts in Africa 1989 -2018. The data is analyzed using the ordinary least squared (OLS) method. The findings presented indicate that peacekeeping operations mandated under Chapter VII can decrease the level of combat violence from very high levels to medium levels, but struggles to decrease them further. Even though these missions are not able to end armed conflicts, this suggest that missions mandated under Chapter VII make an important contribution in limiting the deadliness of internal armed conflicts.

Proxy Wars: The Effects of External Support on Multiparty Conflicts2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

How does external support affect the number of rebel groups active in a conflict? The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether there is a systematic relationship between external support and civil wars with more than one rebel group active, referred to as multiparty conflicts. Drawing on previous literature on the causes of such conflicts, I argue that external support increases the probability of multiparty conflicts by providing resources to nascent rebel groups while also causing polarization and inhibiting rebel alliances. Additionally, I argue governments involved in interstate rivalries are more likely to be involved in multipart conflicts, as the government’s rivals are more likely than other states to support the rebels. I test these theories using global data on the number of actors in intrastate armed conflicts 1975-2009 using logistic regression and Random Forest machine learning. I find that conflicts with external supporters have an increased probability of being multiparty conflicts. This holds true for both support from states to the government and the rebels, as well as support from non-state groups to the rebels. I also find that governments involved in interstate rivalries are more likely to be involved in multiparty conflicts.

Rekommendationer: Nationellt format för publiceringsdatabaser2004Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Estimating a VECM for a Small Open Economy2019Manuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In economic theory, the term small open economy refers to an economy that is too small to influence the surrounding world. The surrounding world can, for this reason, be seen as exogenous relative to the economy of this small open economy. The main contribution of this paper is the proposal of how to estimate a vector error correction model with exogeneity restrictions on the long-run parameters, the adjustment parameters as well as on the short-run dynamic parameters between small open economies and the surrounding world. A Monte Carlo simulation study of impulse responses shows that the proposed method is considerably more efficient compared to models that fully or partially ignore the restrictions implied by the small open economy property. Using two Swedish macroeconomic datasets, we find that there are, for some variables, large differences in impulse responses between our proposed method incorporating the restrictions and models using no or partial restrictions. As the small open economy property is in many situations uncontroversial, our method enables the incorporation of indisputable economic theory into the econometric estimation of the model.
