Defining ScaniaSwedish - A Controlled Language for Truck Maintenance1996In: Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Controlled Language Applications, Centre for Computational Linguistics. Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , 1996Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An approach to integrated multilingual document production is proposed. The basic idea of this approach is to use the analyzer of a modular, transferbased machine translation system as the core of a language checker. The checker generates grammatical structures to be forwarded to the transfer and generation components for the various target languages. A precondition for such an approach is a controlled source language. The source language in focus of this presentation, is ScaniaSwedish, to be defined via a standardization of the language presently used by Scania in their truck maintenance documents. Here we concentrate on the identification of the vocabulary of current ScaniaSwedish and present the results that we achieved so far. In parallel with the inventory of the vocabulary, the competence of the language checker is developed.

Das präteritale Konzept im Frühneuhochdeutschen: Zur Distribution von Präteritum und präteritalem Perfekt in Flugschriften des 16. Jahrhunderts2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis addresses the decline of the preterite tense, referred to as der Oberdeutsche Präteritumschwund (Upper German Preterite Loss), in favour of the present perfect tense. Its main focus is to examine and compare the distribution of the two tenses. The present work combines synchronic and diachronic perspectives in order to provide a thorough account of the process of change; special attention is paid to the development of the present perfect and its different readings. The historical change in the German verbal system – the possibility of using the present perfect instead of the preterite – is a very noticeable feature of Early High German. This change gave the German verbal system two possibilities of expressing states of affairs with the same time reference.

According to this study, the present perfect is a polyfunctional category carrying not only the perfect but also the preterite reading, which can express the same semantics as the preterite: E,R<S. The two variants coexisted in the 16th century. The analysis is based on a text corpus containing forty political pamphlets belonging to different text types from the period 1509-1552 and considers the distribution of the two tenses according to verbal lexeme, situation type, inflectional class, voice, person, sentence type and the presence of temporal adverbials. Some textual-based factors are also studied.

Although the preterite is gradually being replaced by the present perfect, it is the preferred tense for the expression of E,R<S in the corpus, accounting for 69% of the data. The highest proportion of preterites is found with the verb sprechen and with the temporal adverb da/do (especially in combination with each other), in temporal clauses (particularly when initiated by da/do and als), in clauses of result and in clauses with modal verbs. High proportions of present perfect verb phrases with preterite readings correlate with second-person subjects, interrogative sentences and adverbials with calendar references. While the preterite is the pure narrative tense, the textual analysis also shows that the proportion of present perfect verb phrases are higher at the beginning of texts and when historical events are being interpreted, evaluated and judged.

Genrepedagogik inom SVA-undervisningen: En fenomenografisk undersökning om hur fyra svenska som andraspråkslärare upplever genrepedagogiken2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur Njáll blev Njal men inte Njål: Om isländska sagonamn i svensk översättning2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

“Caribbean English and The Wine of Astonishment2016In: Panel Discussion: “Language and Translation in the Caribbean and Beyond”, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How does current scholarship on literary translingualism and the “monolingual paradigm” (Yasemin Yildiz) reflect on the richly multilingual setting of the Caribbean? Drawing on Edgar Schneider’s dynamic model of postcolonial Englishes and Rebecca Walkowitz’s work on born-translated novels, this paper considers notions of monolingualism in conjunction with Earl Lovelace’s fourth novel, The Wine of Astonishment (1982). I argue this novel offers fertile ground for discussion on how the postcolonial Caribbean “writes back” to the imperial center in a decidedly local language that shatters notions of monolingual, Standard English literature. Lovelace utilizes a range of voices from the creole continuum to reveal issues of power related to religion, race and education. This paper evaluates how Lovelace’s use of Trinidadian Creole for not only the dialogue, but the narration of the novel, validates it as a literary language and challenges norms of standardizing local tongues for literary use. An engagement with concepts of linguistic imperialism and the scholarly work historically specific to the novel elucidate these points.

En jämförelse av nyhetsartiklar: I tidningstryck och på webben ur ett läsbarhetsperspektiv2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Aurora von Konigsmarck and Eva Margaretha Frolich, two noblewomen of German descent in late seventeenth-century Sweden, were both influenced by currents in contemporary theology and piety. Aurora von Konigsmarck, her sister, and two of their female cousins formed a circle around the Swedish queen Ulrica Eleonora (the elder). Together they wrote strongly emotional religious poetry in German, which is preserved in an exquisite volume in the Uppsala University Library.Eva Margaretha Frolich expected the Swedish king Charles XI to play a central role in the imminent apocalyptic drama and become the ruler of the world. After she had been exiled from Sweden, she propagated for these views in a number of tracts published in Amsterdam. The present article explores some important paratextual features in Nordischer weyrauch', the manuscript collection of religious poetry written in Aurora von Konigsmarck's hand, and in the works by Eva Margaretha Frolich. The discussion shows the importance of paratextual analysis for the interpretation of texts from the literary and intellectual culture of early modern Europe.
