Gig-jobs: Stepping stones or dead ends?2022In: Labour Economics, ISSN 0927-5371, E-ISSN 1879-1034, Vol. 76, article id 102171Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How useful is work experience from the gig economy for labor market entrants searching for traditional wage jobs? We conducted a correspondence study in Sweden, comparing callback rates for recent high school graduates with (i) gig-experience, (ii) traditional experience, and (iii) unemployment history. We also study heterogeneous responses with respect to perceived foreign background. Our findings suggest that gig-experience is more valuable than unemployment, but less useful than traditional experience for majority applicants. Strikingly however, no form of labor market experience increases the callback rate for minority workers.

Piracy and Music Sales: The Effects of An Anti-Piracy Law2014In: Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, ISSN 0167-2681, E-ISSN 1879-1751, Vol. 105, p. 90-106Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The implementation of a copyright protection reform in Sweden in April 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and punished for illegal file sharing. This paper investigates the impact of the reform on illegal file sharing and music sales using a difference-in-differences approach with Norway and Finland as control groups. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 16% and increased music sales by 36% during the first six months. Pirated music therefore seems to be a strong substitute to legal music. However, the reform effects disappeared almost completely after six months, likely because of the weak enforcement of the law.

Piracy, Music, and Movies: A Natural Experiment2010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the effects of illegal file sharing (piracy) on music and movie sales. The Swedish implementation of the European Union directive IPRED on April 1, 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and prosecuted for file sharing. We investigate the subsequent drop in piracy as approximated by the drop in Swedish Internet traffic and the effects on music and movie sales in Sweden. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 18 percent during the subsequent six months. It also increased sales of physical music by 27 percent and digital music by 48 percent. Furthermore, it had no significant effects on the sales of theater tickets or DVD movies. The results indicate that pirated music is a strong substitute for legal music whereas the substitutability is less for movies.

Dynastic Human Capital, Inequality, and Intergenerational Mobility2021In: The American Economic Review, ISSN 0002-8282, E-ISSN 1944-7981, Vol. 111, no 5, p. 1523-1548Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We estimate long-run intergenerational persistence in human capital using information on outcomes for the extended family: the dynasty. A dataset including the entire Swedish population, linking four generations, allows us to identify parents' siblings and cousins, their spouses, and spouses' siblings. Using various human capital measures, we show that traditional parent-child estimates underestimate long-run intergenerational persistence by at least one-third. By adding outcomes for more distant ancestors, we show that almost all of the persistence is captured by the parental generation. Data on adoptees show that at least one-third of -long-term persistence is attributed to environmental factors.

Intergenerational Wealth Mobility and the Role of Inheritance: Evidence from Multiple Generations2018In: Economic Journal, ISSN 0013-0133, E-ISSN 1468-0297, Vol. 128, no 612, p. F482-F513Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study estimates intergenerational wealth correlations across up to four generations and examines the degree to which the wealth association between parents and children can be explained by inheritances. Using a Swedish data set with newly hand-collected data on wealth and bequests, we find parent-child rank correlations of 0.3-0.4 and grandparent-grandchild rank correlations of 0.1-0.2. Bequests and gifts appear to be central in this process, accounting for at least half of the parent-child wealth correlation while earnings and education can account for only a quarter.

Aktiemarknadens reaktion vid en vinstvarning på de nordiska börserna2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A study of ESG scores and corporate performance in the Nordics2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As ESG practises have sailed up to be at the very top of the business and investment agenda in recent years, claims of its ability to also enhance corporate performance have been adopted by ever more high-profile proponents. This paper sets out to explore the relationship between ESG Scores and Corporate performance in the Nordic region. I use ESG and fundamental firm data collected from the Refinitiv platform for Nordic firms between the years 2007-2020. Where I find economically significant diverging results at the country levels for firm value (Market-to-Book) and economically significant negative results for firm profitability (ROA). I also find diverging statistically significant, albeit economically insignificant, results for both the Nordic in general, and at the country level for several operating measures. My results show that there are regional differences in the results, where more regional research is needed to understand the underlying drivers of ESG and firm performance.

Financing constraints and R&D investments: Evidence from high-tech Swedish firms2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Financing of research and development, as an important component of innovation, has attracted a renewed attention in academic financing literature. This paper examines the effect of financing constraints on R&D investments of high-tech Swedish companies over the period of 2010 to 2016. Accordingly, balance sheet data related to 49 companies, which has the smaller amount of employees in comparison with the rest of high-tech publicly listed companies is collected. Moreover, a dynamic model based on previous literature about financing constrained is developed to study the relation of both internal and external resources of financing with R&D investments of the selected companies. The result of this study shows that internal resources of financing such as cash holdings have a positive correlation with R&D investments. The coefficient of this financial variable is large enough to conclude that selected firms are financially constrained. However, based on other factors such as consideration of age and occurrence of global financial recession in the period that this study is accomplished, I concluded that dependence of companies to their internal resources for financing their R&D investments is an outcome of the characteristics of their environment.

Abnormal returns of credit rating announcements2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis studies abnormal returns of credit rating changes. The purpose is to examine whether downgrades and upgrades lead to abnormal stock market returns. German data is used from the time period 1998-2018. This thesis examines ratings from all large credit rating agencies. These are Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s and Fitch. There is a total of 362 company rating changes during this period. After sorting the data, the remaining changes to be studied are 143 downgrades and 93 upgrades. An event study approach is used to examine changes during the whole period, combined with a comparison before and after the financial crisis in 2008. The comparison is interesting due to the criticism towards credit rating agencies before and during the crisis. Downgrades do not show any significant abnormal returns. Upgrades show positive (negative) abnormal return 15 days before (after) the announcement. One potential explanation is that upgrades might already be anticipated by the market participants and subsequently followed with an effect of overreaction. There is no significant change close to the event date. The comparison between before and after the crisis does lack significance to prove differences.

Den svenska spelregleringen: -Finns det incitament till en omreglering?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The gambling regulation in Sweden is a controversial topic. The thesis compares the Swedish gambling regulation with current regulation in Britain and Denmark. Cost-benefit analysis is used to analyze the various differences between the regulations. Primarily information is used from surveys, interviews and legal texts to explain the existing problems related to the gambling market. This thesis compares the conditions in the different countries and differences in various gambling types. The thesis also sets out the conditions for the private companies and differences in socio-economic benefits. The conclusion is that the present regulation is not as economically efficient as the comparison countries’ gambling regulations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    A1213

Interaction between brand communities and a brand owner: The effect on community members’ perception of a brand2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose The aim of the paper is to improve the understanding of effects caused by involvement of brand community members in communication with a brand owning company.

The research has been conducted in Moscow, Russia. It examines brand values associated with Audi by Audi Club Moscow members, and those ones perceived by non-community members, and beside this, the degree of involvement in communication with the company of both.

Research Method Numerous in-depth interviews have been processed among brand community members, people outside the community and the Audi AG employees.

Results Through the analysis of primary data it was found that thanks to active communication with Audi brand community members associate with the brand values, similar to the brand holder’s ones. However, people outside the community, who do not actively communicate with the company, have the tendency to perceive brand values, controversial to brand owner’s ones.

Research limitations/implications Due to the time and resources limits only one Audi brand community was chosen to represent Russia’s market. The investigation of communication channels between a brand and brand communities could be the direction of further studies.

Practical implications The results of the study might have value for practical implementation in business; they could be used for building up and managing communication between a company and brand communities.

Originality/value This study supplies the contribution to the existing literature and companies’ managers disclosing a field not analyzed before

Is There a Housing Bubble in Stockholm?: A Simple Error Correction Approach2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study an error correction model is estimated using monthly panel data from Stockholm covering the time period January 2005 to December 2012. In the long-run equation the fundamental variables real disposable income, real mortgage rate, real construction costs and population growth are shown to be significant. The exploration of the short-run dynamics reveals a significant error correction term suggesting a movement towards long-run equilibrium of 11.2 percent per month. The fitted values from the long-run equation are plotted against the actual real prices suggesting a slight inflation in prices in late 2012. Autocorrelation is present in the model, indicating a backward-looking pattern in real housing prices. These findings are consistent with speculative behavior but the price fluctuations are in large parts explained by the fundamental variables and as the cause of price discrepancies is unknown, an irrational price bubble cannot be concluded to exist.

Marketing and Effectuation: A Study of Marketing Practices Among Swedish Microbreweries2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study aims to analyse the marketing strategies of Swedish microbreweries and relate them to the entrepreneurial principles of effectuation and causation. The authors investigated eight microbreweries in Mälardalsregionen of Sweden, conducting interviews with members of the founding team or the management team at the microbreweries. The results of the study show that most breweries used effectual principles to describe their marketing efforts. Two effectual principles in particular, bird-in-hand and affordable loss, were shown to be present throughout the sample. Furthermore, most microbrewery founders did not give a lot of importance to marketing and considered it to be a part of everyday activities of the brewery rather than a separate organisational function. There was a direct correlation between the size of the microbrewery and its debts, and the marketing efforts of the microbrewery. Based on these results, the authors propose: (1) Microbrewery founders use effectual logics more than causational logics in their marketing efforts; and (2) Microbrewery founders with unawareness or lack of knowledge of the causational methods are more likely to go about their marketing activities using effectual logic.

Cereal Couture Meets Social Networks: A case study on me&goji using Social Networks as a marketing tool to communicate their Value Proposition2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The cereal couture company, [me] & goji, is the dream of three young entrepreneurs. They were the first online company ever to provide the U.S market with customized cereal mix. This case study finds that online companies with an innovative product such as [me] & goji may benefit from using Social Networks as a marketing channel to communicate their Value Proposition. Supported by Roger's Adoption theory, selected theories on, Value Proposition, Social Networks, and qualitative data gathered from, interviews and surveys several findings were made. The conclusion is that despite offering a relatively non complex product, with a high relative advantage the market may have difficulties with recognizing the value of the product. This is mainly due to the fact that products sold online cannot be tried by the customer until after purchase. This may be perceived as an uncertainty factor for some customers. The main benefit with viral marketing tools such as Social Networks is that they may increase the rate of the market adopting new products.

The role of social ties in collaborative project networks: A tale of two construction cases2021In: Construction Management and Economics, ISSN 0144-6193, E-ISSN 1466-433X, Vol. 39, no 9, p. 723-738Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Collaborative project delivery models (CPDMs) are increasing in popularity as infrastructure con-struction projects become more complex and grow in scale and scope. CPDMs build on highlevels of trust, information exchange and formal contractual relations, creating complex relation-ships between actors in the project network. The literature emphasizes the procurement phaseand contractual aspects of CPDMs; however, few studies explicitly focus on the role of socialrelationships in CPDM projects. Social network theory has recently been introduced in the archi-tecture, engineering and construction industry industry to study relationships between networkactors, but the role of social ties within CPDM project networks is still unclear. Through twoqualitative case studies, we have analyzed the role of social ties in projects applying a CPDMcontract. The empirical evidence of 41 semi-structured interviews and observations points toaspects that affect the development of social ties in CPDMs, such as initial project setup, projectidentification, perception of actors, resource sharing and shared space, as well as the importanceof formal and informal ties for supporting collaborative project practices. The evidence showshow social ties develop into negative or positive bonds affecting the level of collaboration. Thisstudy contributes by emphasizing the interplay between project networks using CPDMs andsocial ties.

    Abstract [en]

The paper examines if institutional investors are net sellers prior to dividend omission announcements and if this is due to asymmetric information. By studying companies listed on Nasdaq OMX Stockholm’s main list during the period 2004-2018, we find that institutional investors are net sellers during two quarters prior to dividend omission announcements and that this is likely due to asymmetric information. The study also shows that the market value of the observed companies decreases prior to dividend omission announcements.

Kunskapsöverföring inom en ideell förening2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    fungerar.

To SST, or not to SST, that is the question: En studie om self-service technology inom hotellbranschen2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study examines how hotels manage digitization within the industry. Specifically it seeks to examine how managers view decisions and strategies for implementing SST in relation to hotel guest’s acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach: This study has assumed a mixed methods methodology. The method has been carried out through an abductive approach between theoretical and empirical material. The study is based on a combined research design of qualitative and quantitative nature and is grounded on the empirical evidence that consists of three semi-structured interviews and surveys. The qualitative part leads to analysis according to the theoretical structure and is then combined with statistical analysis of the survey responses.

Findings: This study confirms a few elements of previous literature: implementations require considerable investments and costs; SST on offer in the hotel industry are found lacking; guests prefer technologies they have experience with; and managers have a wait-and-see attitude to SST. The study also shows that people used to technology are proportionately big and have a positive attitude towards SST. Further, the study presents new theoretical insights: high-end hotels are expected to offer technology; SST is perceived to reduce hotels security; attitude towards SST does not differ between genders; and SST is perceived to affect aesthetics.

Long-term effects of training in economical driving: Fuel consumption, accidents, driver acceleration behavior and technical feedback2007In: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, ISSN 0169-8141, E-ISSN 1872-8219, Vol. 37, no 4, p. 333-343Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The effects of training in fuel-efficient driving for bus drivers in a city environment were evaluated. Three dependent variables, hypothetically associated with such training, were used; fuel and accident data from the bus company, and driver acceleration behavior from five buses, over time periods of several years. Effects of temperature and number of passengers on fuel consumption were held constant. Fuelling and acceleration data yielded fairly similar results. It was found that, although the effects on these variables during training were very strong (as found in a previous study), these did not transfer well into the drivers' working situation. Overall, the effect was about two percent fuel consumption reduction as a mean over 12 months after training. No effect was found for accidents, although a two percent reduction would not have been detectable. In a second phase of the study, 28 buses were equipped with Econen feedback equipment, which give an indication on how much fuel is used concurrently, resulting in a further reduction of consumption of about two percent.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Goal-oriented balancing: happy-happy negotiations beyond win-win situations2017In: Journal of business & industrial marketing, ISSN 0885-8624, E-ISSN 2052-1189, Vol. 32, no 4, p. 525-534Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - This paper aims to suggest a dynamic model incorporating the important dimensions that exist in negotiation processes. Design/methodology/approach - To produce a general and conceptual theory of negotiation, the grounded theory methodology is deployed. Findings - The core process in this model is dubbed "goal-oriented balancing" and describes how he negotiator is continuously balancing opposing, and seemingly contrasting, forces in a situation specific and dynamic manner to reach agreements. Based on these findings, this study also suggests a concept to describe negotiations that is focused on collaboration and that is not an oxymoron as is the concept of "win-win". Practical implications - This conceptual model can be used by managers and practitioners to navigate in a negotiation process. Originality/value - This is the first grounded theory study in negotiation research and attempt to describe negotiation processes as dynamic events in which different dimensions are managed simultaneously.

Fondstorlekens inverkan på prestation: En undersökning av aktiefonder på den svenska marknaden under perioder av upp- och nedgångar.2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

On the benefits from rigid labour markets : norms, market failures, and social insurance1998Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The common view that far-reaching labour market deregulation is the only remedy for high European unemployment is too simplistic. First, the evidence suggests that deeply rooted social customs are an important cause of wage rigidity, going beyond the legal constraints emphasized in the political debate. Second, in a second-best setting, a compressed wage structure may generate an efficiency gain. Finally, based on simple plots of the relation between labour market institutions and openness in OECD countries, I conclude that the globalization of economic activity may lead to increased demand for various labour market rigidities.

On the determinants of labour market institutions : rent-sharing vs. social insurance2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What determines the structure of labour market institutions? This paper argues that common explanations based on rent sharing are incomplete; unions, job protection, and egalitarian pay structures may have as much to do with social insurance of otherwise uninsurable risks as with rent sharing and vested interests. In support of this more benign complementary hypothesis the paper presents a range of historical, theoretical, and cross-country regression evidence. The social insurance perspective changes substantially the assessment of often-proposed reforms of European labour market institutions. The benefits from eliminating labour market rigidities have to be set against the costs of reduced coverage of human capital related risk. The paper also argues that it is unclear whether the forces of globalisation, and the new economy, will really force countries to make their labour markets more flexible. While these phenomena may increase the efficiency costs of existing institutions, they may also make people more willing to pay a high premium to preserve institutions that provide insurance.

    Abstract [en]

A recent literature has used surveys of those who set wages to learn about the nature of wage incentives and the sources of wage rigidity. Methodologically, we overcome many of the objections that have been raised against this work. Substantively, we find that: (i) the reasons for real wage rigidity differ significantly between large and small firms, and between the high- and low-end of the labor market; (ii) efficiency wage mechanisms reinforce rigidities due to worker bargaining power; (iii) money illusion is a widespread phenomenon across all segments of the labor market; (iv) unions reinforce nominal wage rigidities due to external pay comparisons; (v) there appears to be gender differences in pay bargaining and work morale.

We review the theoretical and empirical evidence on the relation between growth and the public sector against the background of the current debate on the issue. The evidence is found to admit no conclusion on whether the relation is positive, negative or non-existent. A simple cross-country regression in an OECD sample illustrates how the relation is easily tilted from negative to positive by introducing control variables for initial GDP and the dependent population.

Fölster and Henrekson (1998) claim that they, by addressing a number of econometric problems, can establish that it is likely that economies with a large public sector grow more slowly than economies with a small public sector. But their regressions are fundamentally flawed. Re-estimating their growth equation using theoretically valid instruments, we find that the growth effect of the public sector is statistically insignificant, and much smaller than the point-estimates reported by Fölster and Henrekson. This is consistent with the agnostic conclusion, drawn by us and many others, that cross-country growth regressions are unlikely to give a reliable answer to whether a large public sector is growth promoting or retarding.

Survey evidence on wage rigidity and unemployment : Sweden in the 1990s1999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study reports the results from a repeat survey among managers in Swedish manufacturing, designed to explore how a severe and prolonged macroeconomic shock affects wage rigidity and unemployment. Our second survey was conducted in 1998, when the unemployment rate was much higher, and the inflation rate much lower, than when we conducted the first survey in 1991. We find no evidence that the increase in unemployment has softened the mechanisms generating wage rigidity. On the contrary, we conclude that – because of severe downward nominal wage rigidity – real wages have become more rigid during Sweden’s move to a low-inflation environment. We also report a range of new evidence on underbidding, efficiency wage mechanisms, job security legislation, workers’ wage norms, and to what extent the long-term unemployed are subject to statistical discrimination.

Fölster and Henrekson (European Economic Review 45 (2001), 1501–1520) argue that “...the more the econometric problems that are addressed, the more robust the relationship between government size and economic growth appears”. But in failing to control for simultaneity and in ignoring issues of sample-selection bias, the regressions reported by Fölster/Henrekson are flawed. Using theoretically valid instruments, we find that the estimated partial correlation between size of the public sector and economic growth is statistically insignificant and highly unstable across specifications. Moreover, since instruments are weak, all hypothesis tests are unreliable. We conclude that cross-country growth regressions are unlikely to come up with a reliable answer to the question of the growth effects of government spending and taxation.

The critical variable is not the tax rate per se, but the ”transfer-adjusted tax rate”. We discuss some conceptual issues in dynamic revenue analysis, and we explain why previous studies have arrived at seemingly contradictory results. Finally, we perform an empirical study of the transfer-adjusted tax rates of the OECD countries to see which country has the highest potential for fiscal improvements; it turns out that only a few countries have any potential for such ”dynamic scoring”.

    Abstract [en]

We examine how tax avoidance in the form of trade in well-functioning asset markets affects the basic labor supply model. We show that tax arbitrage has dramatic implications for positive, normative and econometric analysis of how taxes affect work incentives.
