Televangelism in Sweden—Now?: Is Channel 10 in Älmhult in Fact a Telechurch?2018In: Charismatic Christianity in Finland, Norway and Sweden: Case Studies in Historical and contemporary Developments / [ed] Jessica Moberg & Jane Skjoldli, Cham, Ch.: Palgrave Macmillan, 2018, 1, p. 213-238Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ever since televangelism started in the United States, Sweden has been considered an impossible arena for that type of enterprise. In the 1960’s almost all Swedes were formal members of the Lutheran Church of Sweden, were heavily secularized, and were considered to be anti-Charismatic and fairly averse to the expression of personal religiosity in public, as in televangelism. Furthermore, the state monopoly of Swedish radio and television closely regulated the transmission of church services, and thus impeded any such evangelization initiatives via TV. Nevertheless, in 2005, when the heyday of televangelism seemed to be over in the United States, a new Charismatic TV channel was founded in Älmhult in Småland. The new channel was called “Channel 10” (Kanal 10). “Kanal” was a neutral designation witout any religious connotations and the number “10” was not used by any television channel in Sweden at the time. In 10 years, Channel 10 has grown into a successful business whose principal product is Pentecostal or Charismatic preaching. The chapter initially asks the question: How can it be that televangelism attracts Swedes today, when this was considered impossible only 30 years ago? The study explores the actors behind the channel, its contents, and the reception of the programs in the light of contemporary changes in the Pentecostal landscape, especially intergenerational conflicts of interest and ongoing mediatization. The material presented is discussed from a theoretical perspective on identity, inspired by Paul Ricoeur (2005) and Erik Erikson (1964), and nostalgia as advocated by Clay Routledge (2015).

    Abstract [en]

In southern Bolivia, the ‘Weenhayek people, traditional foragers, have returned to their old ways, at least symbolically. During a cultural festival in 2004 this was openly and publicly manifested with traditional outfit, old songs, and signs in the ‘Weenhayek language. For around half a century their music and language had been muted. Their traditional clothing had been gone even longer. The reason for this switch in attitude towards their own heritage raises questions about the formation of ethnic identity - ethnogenesis as well as ethnoregenesis - in general.

Vägskäl: Pingströrelsens kursändring under 1950-talet2015Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Give us this day our daily bread: The moral order of Pentecostal peasants in South Brazil2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This ethnography aims to identify the role of the Pentecostal beliefs that peasants in South Brazil use in justifying their life situations. Anthropological data were collected in the Sertão region of Jaguariaíva, in the Brazilian State of Paraná. An interpretative approach was used with concepts including the moral order of peasantness, moral economy, and multiple livelihood strategies. The core results indicated that Pentecostals in the countryside are not monolithic in terms of religion and have varying degrees of engagement with a variety of churches as well as their relations with the wider capitalism. Their economic and life-changing decisions are articulated by a moral order of peasantness expressed by dependence on Providence and the interpretation of events as a revelation of Divine will. The moral order is significant for maintaining viable peasant communities, orienting their relations to land, kinship, work, and consumption in a way that sets them apart from the “world.” Such findings question the Weberian explanations for the role of Pentecostalism in Latin American capitalism and confirm the repeasantization theory concerning the persistence of a distinctive peasant way of life.

Nakenhetens jämställdhet: En etnologisk studie av vem som tittar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
