Clamour for glamour? City Competition for hosting the Swedish tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest2010In: Tijdschrift voor economische en sociale geografie, ISSN 0040-747X, E-ISSN 1467-9663, Vol. 101, no 2, p. 111-125Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For some time it has been argued that cities all over the world have become more entrepreneurial and increasingly competitive. Most research has focused on spectacular events in well-known metropolises, but far less is known about how smaller cities engage in competitive activities. This paper focuses on how, why and what Swedish cities hope to achieve by engaging themselves in hosting the tryouts to the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), which provides an opportunity for a critical case study of place marketing and city competition in Sweden. The empirical material is based on interviews with stakeholders in the tryouts. Our findings show that the local authorities do not compete in the same way as suggested by the literature, but instead collaborate to a great deal. While there are various motives behind arranging a tryouts tryout, it is noted that whereas the ESC presents an opportunity for a host city to 'place itself on the map', hosting a tryout is often mainly seen as an opportunity to show the organisers of the event the city's potential for hosting other events in the future. Our findings suggest that the main outcome of hosting a tryout, an outcome that the local authorities seem content with, is having arranged a glamorous party for the local inhabitants. The paper concludes by discussing why competition was found to be less outspoken than the literature suggests.

Sveriges framtida vinterturism: företags och kommuners anpassningar till klimatförändringarna2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay in economic geography describes what intra-firm trade as a concept is and different ways to determine in which cases trade is to be labeled as intra-firm trade (IFT) or not. The method used by the author is most easily described as descriptive. This method was chosen in order to test if existing theories; classic and neoclassic economics, new trade theory and international business studies, are capable to explain the phenomena of IFT. The theories are tested trough primary and secondary literature but also trough reasoning by the author.

The conclusion is that the most reasonable way to determine whether trade occurs intra-firm or not, is to decide upon a 5-% rule where it when one part owns 5-% of the voting strength in the other company is to be considered intra-firm trade. This is a conclusion based on several reasons; the strongest one being that a common view on IFT could boost comparative studies as the U.S already collects data based on the 5-% rule.

Classic and neoclassic economics are incapable of explaining IFT as aprerequisite for these theories is that markets are perfect. IFT can only beexplained by models building on imperfect markets hence new trade theory and international business are more successful in explaining IFT.

Finding the formula for sustainable ICT: Lessons from the One Laptop per Child project in Rwanda2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis identifies threats to, and strengths in, the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) deployment in East African developing country Rwanda, and discusses what effect these characteristics may have on the long-term sustainability of the project. The main data collection method used is interviews, performed during a two month field study in the Rwandan capital of Kigali. By using a framework based in the field of technology transfer, a comprehensive picture of the project is presented, covering the whole process from early decision making and acquisition to the potential assimilation and development of the technology. The most important strength in the OLPC project has proven to be a strong will and commitment of the local organization as well as the country’s government to see it through. A well-adapted organization of support and technical assistance has also proven to work well so far. However, as the project increase in size over the next few years, several threats are also identified. These threats include a lack of financial means and skilled personnel, strong technical dependency on the OLPC organization and insufficient plans for the future expansion. We argue that the project would become more sustainable if expansions were to cease and a larger focus was put on securing the current deployments.

Port-of-Entry Neighbourhood and its Effects on the Economic Success of Refugees in Sweden2019In: International Migration Review, ISSN 0197-9183, Vol. 53, no 3, p. 671-705Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the degree to which the ethnic group composition of “port-of-entry neighborhood” (PoE), the first permanent settlement after immigration, affects the employment prospects of refugees in Sweden during the subsequent 10 years. We use panel data on working-age adults from Iran, Iraq, and Somalia immigrating into Sweden from 1995 to 2004. We control for initial individual and labor market characteristics, use instrumental variable regression to avoid bias from geographic selection, and stratify models by gender and co-ethnic employment and education rates within the neighborhood. We find that the impact of co-ethnic neighbors in the PoE varies dramatically by gender.

What mix matters?: Exploring the relationships between individuals' incomes and different measures of their neighbourhood context2007In: Housing Studies, ISSN 0267-3037, E-ISSN 1466-1810, Vol. 22, no 5, p. 637-660Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is substantial interest among policy makers in both Western Europe and North America in reducing concentrations of disadvantaged households through initiatives to enhance the `social mix' of neighbourhoods. However, there is little consideration or understanding with regard to which mix of household characteristics matters most in influencing the socio-economic outcomes for individual residents. This paper explores the degree to which a wide variety of 1995 neighbourhood conditions in Sweden are statistically related to earnings for all adult metropolitan and non-metropolitan men and women during the 1996-99 period, controlling for a wide variety of personal characteristics. The paper finds that the extremes of the neighbourhood income distribution, operationalized by the percentages of adult males with earnings in the lowest 30th and the highest 30th percentiles, hold greater explanatory power than domains of household mix related to education, ethnicity or housing tenure. Separating the effects of having substantial shares of low and high income neighbours, it is found that it is the presence of the former that means most for the incomes of metropolitan and non-metropolitan men and women, with the largest effects for metropolitan men.

    Abstract [en]

This paper set out with the goal of comparing the perception of inner-city retail’s status with its factual status. A focus has here been made on the city centre’s relationship with external city-centres, due to it often being conceived as one of the primary causes for the stagnation of city-centres. After having conducted six interviews with two municipalities, a summary was made on their views on the status of their own city-centre and the status of Sweden’s city-centres in general. The results were then analysed under the theoretical framework of Amcoff et al (2015), who has proven that Sweden’s current retail geography is more nuanced than a black and white picture of an impoverished city-centre by the hands of external shopping. The comparison led to several conclusions. The foremost being that both municipalities had a more positive outlook on their own city-centre’s relationship with their external retail variants. In fact, elements such as online retail and commutation were viewed as greater challenges than external retail, which was instead firmly regarded as complementary to inner-city retail. Contrastingly, the idea of the city-centres’ impoverishment by external retail seemed to instead ring true on a national scale. Their interpretations on a local scale was therefore more aligned with the literature’s factual description. Consequently, this work has served as fuel to a discussion on the possible existence of “the myth of the impoverished city-centre”.

    Abstract [sv]

Johnsson, A. 2018.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents partial findings of an ongoing study in Sri Lanka, on children to female migrant domestic workers in the Middle East. The overall aim of the study is to contribute to a contextual understanding of the impact of the mother’s migration on children’s living conditions and everyday life by identifying factors that may worsen or alleviate the condition of being left behind. One emerging factor is the number of migration cycles of the mother. The leading questions are: How do households cope with the responsibility of caring for the children in the face of recurrent migration cycles of the mother? Are the solutions found always in the best interest of the children? Preliminary results indicated a clear relationship between the number of migration cycles of the mother and the level of tolerance and capability of the children’s caretakers in fulfilling their role, which ultimately puts the welfare of the children at risk.
