Urban Terror: The Case of Lone Wolf Peter Mangs2018Inngår i: Terrorism and Political Violence, ISSN 0954-6553, E-ISSN 1556-1836, Vol. 30, nr 5, s. 793-811Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

White racist serial killer Peter Mangs is the most politically conscious lone wolf terrorist Sweden has seen thus far. Adopting the tactics of Joseph Paul Franklin to the city of Malmö, Mangs committed at least three murders and twelve murder attempts between 2003 and 2010. Well-versed in white power literature and leaderless resistance tactics, Mangs aimed at “igniting a race war” by shooting Black, Muslim, and Roma citizens to amplify racialized tensions, grievances, and anxieties in the increasingly segregated city. Yet, Mangs is not included in any database of single-actor terrorism, as these depend on how a perpetrator or incident is defined by the police, the courts, and the media. In this case, Mangs’ political motives were ignored by everyone, except by people in the targeted communities and the white racist milieu. This fact highlights the importance of ethnographic methods to terrorism studies. Based on ten three-hour interviews with Mangs, an analysis of his own political writings, previously not known to the public, interviews with Mangs’ victims, their friends and relatives, and extensive fieldwork in Malmö among activists across the political spectrum, including people who hailed Mangs’ deeds as heroic, this essay explores the impact of urban lone wolf terrorism.

What’s Love Got To Do With It?: Ultranationalism, Islamophobia and Hate Crime in Sweden2015Inngår i: Journal of Religion and Violence, E-ISSN 2159-6808, ISSN ISSN 0738-098X, Vol. 3, nr 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: Sweden is known for its tolerance and liberal policies. Yet, sixty percent of Sweden’s mosques and Islamic centres had been subjected to threats, vandalism, or arson. Muslim women, in particular, seem to be targets of hate crimes, but rarely report incidents to the police. In 2014, the Sweden Democrats, a proto-fascist nationalist party, gained close to 13 percent of the national vote after a fervent anti-Muslim campaign supported by a network of social media outlets in which incitements to violence against Muslim-Swedes proliferated. Based on fieldwork, surveys, and open-ended interviews with 100 Muslim citizens and 40 anti-Muslim activist, as well as a review of anti-Muslim online calls to arms, this essay addresses the surge of anti-Muslim hate crime in Sweden, exploring the role of violence in the proto-fascist attempt to ‘recreate’ a homogenous nation that never existed. While the literature on ultranationalist-inspired hate crime typically sees the perpetrators as angry white men, the nationalists interviewed in this study claimed to act out of love, not hate. By examining how love and hate may reinforce each other, this essay argues that anti-Muslim hate crime is a form of political violence that patrols the borders and identities it produces, and shows the extent to which victims may adopt the perpetrator’s gaze and experience their own bodies as deviant, and out of place in their own home country.

    Abstract [en]

Pointing out that even countercultural religious movements have their fringe elements, this chapter analyzes and describes the rise of racist Asatrú and other Norse-flavored Paganisms in the intersections of American alternative religion and the legacy of white supremacy. With important predecessors among the Ariosophic heathens in the pan-Germanic völkisch milieu and the occult National Socialist tendency in the Third Reich, racist paganism in the United States has come in two waves: the first as a racist sub-current to the 1960s counterculture and the second as part of the radicalization of the white power milieu during the 1990s. Based on fieldwork and interviews with leading proponents of racist heathenry, this chapter focuses on one significant racist pagan vehicle of each wave, the Odinist Fellowship and Wotansvolk, detailing their creed, ritual practices, prison outreach ministries, and political ambitions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine how authors of textbooks used in religious education in Swedish schools cope with the two following aspects: 1) How to objectively and accurately describe the various religious traditions that are included in what is commonly understood as the five major world religions and their patriarchal patterns; and 2) How to avoid reproducing traditional gender roles, which is part of the central values fundamental to the Swedish school system stipulated by the government.

In order to do so, three textbooks were examined, using both a qualitative text analysis, and a quantitative picture analysis. The research questions asked include how the authors portray men’s and women’s religiosity, whether men are seen as the neutral norm, and what message the pictures chosen to accompany the texts portray to the reader. Theories concerning the male primacy and androcentric tendencies in the descriptions of religious traditions developed by researchers Yvonne Hirdman and Jeanette Sky were used in order to analyze the results.

The results of the study show that two main approaches for how the authors have handled the seemingly contradictory objectives can be distinguished. The first approach is in line with the goal of an objective and detailed description of the different religious traditions and their patriarchal tendencies, as the authors include an account of the different roles assigned to people according to gender. The other approach focuses more on the general values portrayed by the religions, in which both men and women can be included, connected to central values of the Swedish schools. However, they might do so at the expense of portraying a complete picture, thus obscuring the predicaments of the gender hierarchies.

    Abstract [en]

Nowadays there is a common understanding in the Western countries regarding how equal the genders are in the traditional Christian societies, while other countries are believed to be characterized by a patriarchal structure. This self-image has probably led to a kind of blindness concerning the problems in the vicinity and instead of emphasizing unequal trends in the West, criticize other cultures and religions for being misogynist. The aim of this study is to analyse how the internet page www.so-rummet.se  describes Islam and Buddhism through a gender perspective. SO-rummet is a webpage created by the teacher Robert de Vries and aims to complete the learning material that is used in the Swedish schools. The site focuses on history, religion, geography and civics.  The purpose of this essay is to investigate how the normative religious believer is described and if both men and women are included in the texts about Islam and Buddhism. This essay will be based on content analysis by assuming which words that are being used and how the genders are being described. This will help concluding who’s considered to be the norm in the text at SO-rummet.

Tradition as Resource: Transnational Somali Women Traders Facing the Realities of Civil War2009Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is an analysis of interviews with and observations among transnational Somali women traders, located in Somaliland (northwest Somalia) and Dubai. Since the outbreak of the Somali civil war an increasing number of women have become the sole providers of their families. Female agency is explored by discussing the constraints imposed upon these women’s activities, as well as the strategies they employ to overcome such constraints and establish themselves as successful entrepreneurs and respectable women of piety and honor.

My hypothesis is that inadequate access to resources compels women to seek for the enhancement of safety (as opposed to autonomy), whereas sufficient access enables them to seek for the enhancement of independence and self-reliance. To more closely explore the influence of capital (power/security) on choice, I have selected informants from three categories of female traders, each of which represents a different degree of access to material and social resources. The division is as follows: 1) four retail traders located in Hargeisa; 2) four retail traders located in Dubai; and, 3) six large-scale wholesale traders that largely travel between these two locations.

By selecting informants from these three categories, I hope to make visible the complex, often contradictory, contexts in which the signs and symbols of a culture develop their meanings as part of an ongoing transformative process. My aim is to examine how these women use tradition – the content of Somali culture and Islam that “exists” within discourse (as articulations and rearticulations) – as a resource to improve their lives. My discussion of this material occurs in the context of contemporary debates on agency, gender and Islamization; my hope is to question a far too common stigmatization and victimization of Muslim women in general, and of Somali women in particular.

    Abstract [en]

The objective of this thesis is to study how the use of movies can enrich the educational platform. Movies: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) have been analyzed using a hermeneutic method and postcolonial theory to identify stereotypes and religious and mythologicial motives. This thesis shows that the presentation of religiosity in both movies can be useful in the classroom setting although the presence of stereotypes need to be further discussed with the students. There are plenty of ways to work with both movies in the classroom setting though the teacher has a great responsibility to make it work.

"Kanske är hon en modern profet?" - En receptionsstudie av Karen Armstrongs För Guds skull och 12 steg till ett liv i medkänsla i svenska massmedier2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse how the books The Case for God and 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life by the historian Karen Armstrong has been discussed and debated in swedish mass media. Very few academics in the discipline of the history of religions has had such a broad public success as Karen Armstrong, and it is therefore important to acknowledge how major themes and issues in her writings are discussed on the public arena. With the aid of reception theory developed by Hans Robert Jauss and by Stuart Hall, I present three conclusions about the mass media reception of The Case for God and 12 Steps to a Compassionate Life. First of all, I show that the reception of the two books by Armstrong is dependent on differences in expectations and experiences, and that it is possible to spot and acknowledge these differences in the actual texts that make up the reception. Second, I give evidence to how central binary constructions in the arguments put forward by Armstrong are used and developed upon in the reception. Third, I demonstrate how differences in perceptions about Karen Armstrong as a person plays a major part in the reception, and that Armstrong herself is an active part in the construction of her own media image.

The Eloquent Blood: The Goddess Babalon and the Construction of Femininities in Western Esotericism2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The study analyses the changing construction of femininities and feminine sexuality in interpretations of the goddess Babalon, a central deity in Aleister Crowley’s (1875–1947) esoteric religion Thelema. Femininity has occupied a problematic position in feminist theory, frequently associated with lack, artifice, and restriction. However, this study assumes that femininities are multiple, neither exclusively heterosexual nor limited to women, and can be constructed in ways that challenge the existing gender system. Based on historical and contemporary written sources, qualitative interviews, and ethnographic fieldwork in the Anglo-American esoteric milieu, the study utilises Mimi Schippers’ model of multiple femininities to analyse the Babalon discourse from the fin-de-siècle until today, against the background of shifting perceptions of femininity and feminine sexuality. Inspired by Luce Irigaray’s theorisation of sexual difference, Rosi Braidotti’s concept of feminist figurations, and Catherine Waldby’s notion of erotic destruction, a central question is whether Babalon can function as a figuration enabling new ways of articulating and inhabiting femininities. Reworking the negative feminine stereotype of the femme fatale, Crowley connected Babalon to an initiatory imperative of ego-annihilation, epitomising both feminine, erotic otherness and a feminised receptive modality required of all seekers. Crowley also linked Babalon with liberated female sexuality. Babalon has subsequently been interpreted by other esotericists, including John W. Parsons (1914–1952), who constructed the goddess as a feminist revolutionary; and Kenneth Grant (1924–2011), who equated Babalon with the sex magical priestess and notions of non-dual void preceding manifest creation, linking femininity to the dissolution of stable meaning. Growing awareness of feminism and LGBTQ issues in Anglo-American esotericism from the 1990s on has coincided with the increased visibility of female esotericists as ideology producers within the Babalon discourse. The contemporary Babalon discourse emphasises the feminine, desiring subject as sacred, and connected to the simultaneous threat and promise of the undoing of bounded subjectivity. The study shows how a previously derogatory feminine stereotype is reworked over time in ways that both reproduce and challenge hegemonic notions of femininity, arguing that Babalon functions as a situated and contingent figuration supporting the articulation of alternative ways of doing femininity and feminine sexuality.

    Abstract [en]

Based on fieldwork in the United States, the article analyses the social construction of gender in contemporary OTO. The article addresses an important and often neglected area of study in research on Western esotericism, and discusses how the notion of binary gender is both created and challenged in interactions between OTO members. Thelemic divinity as presented in Liber AL is envisioned as consisting of a divine father, Hadit, mother Nuit, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit, their divine offspring. Despite the gender polarity constructed thus, contemporary OTO members stretch the boundaries of binary gender through a plethora of deities, personal gender performances and acceptance of different sexual orientations and lifestyles. The creativity and innovation of contemporary OTO members' gender constructions demonstrates the necessity of greater methodological diversity in research on Western esotericism, in order to allow an understanding of esoteric traditions as lived religions.

The Scythe and the Pentagram: Santa Muerte from Folk Catholicism to Occultism2017Inngår i: Religions, ISSN 2077-1444, E-ISSN 2077-1444, Vol. 8, nr 1, artikkel-id 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Santa Muerte is establishing a presence among practitioners of contemporary occultism in Europe and North America. The occult milieu is highly different from the Mexican cult of Santa Muerte, having a strong heritage of secrecy and tradition as social capital and being mostly middle-class in orientation. Nonetheless, this Catholic folk saint with a mostly pragmatic, popular, and grassroots cult is becoming increasingly popular among occultists. Based on a survey of three recent books on Santa Muerte geared towards an Anglophone, occult audience, it is therefore the aim of this article to understand how and why the Skeleton Saint is attracting adherents in the occult milieu, by analyzing the underlying causes of this growing trend, as well as the conditions shaping it. It is the overall argument of this article that the beginning reception of Santa Muerte in occultism is a result of perceived needs and demands specific to the occult milieu rather than characteristics inherent in the symbol itself, and that an analysis of the ways in which she is spreading outside of her original sociocultural context must be guided by an understanding of the novel one she is integrated in.

    Abstract [en]

The shu’ubiyya movement originates from the early days of Islam. Its main purpose was to challenge the Arabic elite by showing prominent abilities in non-Arabic groups. The movement disappeared in the eleventh century. In the twentieth century a new wave of shu’ubiyya thoughts reappeared called neo-shu’ubiyya. The twist however was that it was used by the Arabs as derogatory term against their rivals. One accused as a shu’ubiyya was Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution. He never proclaimed to be shu’ubiyya yet the Arabic elite still used it against him. This study compares Ayatollah Khomeini’s speech Message to the Pilgrims from the 1980s with the shu’ubiyya member Ibn Garica’s risala from the eleventh century in al-Andalus. The purpose of the study is to question that Ayatollah Khomeini can be seen as a true shu’ubiyya. By examining their messages the study tries to understand how the shu’ubiyya discourse has evolved in fields such as the sacred, traditions, history and the surrounding world. The result shows that part of Ayatollah Khomeini’s argumentation is similar to that of Ibn Garcia, but that his main purpose deviates too much to be called shu’ubiyya. Ibn Garcia tries to turn the Arabic “us against them” upside down and show how superior the non-Arabs are in comparison. He argues that this should allow the non-Arabs to join the Arabic culture. Ayatollah Khomeini has no desire to enter the Arabic discourse instead he asks all Muslims to unite in his new discourse for the greater god of Islam. The claims of the Arabic elite that Iran is the enemy in a “us against them” scenario is not true according to Ayatollah Khomeini. He tries to change the established view of the Iranian as “them”, and instead make all Muslims “us” and the Americans “them” by showing their evil interactions in the middle east. He wants all Muslims to join together by the core of Islam. The trend goes from a more cultural approach to be completely theological.

Ḥusayn, the Mediator: A structural Analysis of the Karbalā´ Drama according to Abū Ja`far Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923)2007Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The present study has a twofold purpose: Firstly, it is an analysis of the Karbalā´ Drama—i.e. the death of Ḥusayn b. `Alī in the hands of an army which had been sent out by the Umayyad authorities, at Karbalā´ in 60/680—as it is retold by the Muslim jurist and historiographer Abū Ja`far Muḥammad b. Jarīr al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923). Despite its importance, especially to Shī`ite Islam, this text as such has received relatively little attention among scholars of Islam. In this study, the Karbalā´ Drama is regarded as a myth and the method used to analyze it is inspired by the structuralism of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Lévi-Straussian structuralism has probably never before been applied to early Arabic material to the extent that it is used here. The second purpose of the study, then, is to investigate to what extent and in what mode such a method is applicable to this material.

A portion of the text, called the “Text of Reference,” has been selected and thoroughly analyzed. In that analysis, a number of structural features such as codes, oppositions, mediations, and transformations have been identified and made the basis for a more cursory study of the rest of the story. An important structural feature that is detected in this way is the way the argument of the story is forwarded. By the transformation of metaphors into metonyms, the story attempts to make arbitrary relationships look natural and intrinsic. Such a relationship is that between water and blood—two liquids which are at times shed, at times withheld in the story. Husayn takes a mediating position in that he gives his water and his blood. He acts as mediator both in a negative sense (he establishes the basic Islamic opposition of good and evil), and in a positive sense (as religious guide he acts as a bridge between them).
