    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is a feasibility study for a more comprehensive work at Process Automation (PA) ABB, Västerås. The business units this work is focusing on are Mining and Crane Systems with the mission to map their quality processes within supply collaboration, acceptance control and data such as their supplier’s fault frequency. This thesis was initiated because of an internal audit where these business units at PA received remarks on their long term quality development and that they didn’t calculated supplier faults. To evaluate these business units and to find the root causes of these problems, the involved staff was interviewed and their internal documentation database was examined. The work method that is used in this thesis is ABB’s 4Q and it’s practiced in quality development projects at ABB. The thesis report is also structured after 4Q.

    From the interviews could the conclusion be made that the remarks from the internal audit was correct, but that the business units had different root causes to their problems. It was made clear that Mining had problems with reporting faults found at site. It’s not possible to calculate metrics, that global ABB determined shall be used, if the occurring faults aren’t reported. A plausible root cause to why there are insufficient faults reported is that the business units’ decision-making authority haven’t succeed to reach out with enough information to the staff about the importance of the process. It has led to a staff that isn’t aware of the real usefulness of fault reporting. Even the 100k SEK guideline showed to be a root cause to the problem. This guideline hampers the possibility to collect relevant data and goes against ABB’s regulations to generate statistics. It makes it impossible to monitor field failure rates (fault at site) when minor fault are ignored because of the guideline.

    Crane Systems have on the contrary a functioning fault reporting process, but their shortage is in the generating of statistics. Even though the business unit has enough data to calculate and monitor their supplier’s error rate in the forms of lots accepted and PPM, are the statistics not communicated further. The statistics are neither reported internally within the organization, to the supplier or to central ABB. Both product and system managers generate their own statistics for their specific responsibility areas and needs, which mean that the general picture gets lost and the suppliers total fault frequency can’t be found.

    Summarized are these deficiencies leading to poor feedback to the suppliers about their delivered quality, and consequently makes it hard for the suppliers to know what to improve.

    Abstract [sv]

    Avfall som inte sorteras av privatpersoner eller företag levereras till avfallsanläggningar där det sorteras för att öka värdet och skapa avsättning för avfallet. Idag sker sorteringen av blandat avfall på Ragn Sells manuellt med grävmaskin vilket är kostsamt. Kostsam sortering leder dessutom till låg sorteringsgrad. Det här arbetet syftar till att undersöka hur sorteringen kan ske på ett mer effektivt sätt för att möjliggöra en lönsammare sortering och högre sorteringsgrad. Detta kan ske genom att effektivisera dagens metoder men arbetet undersöker också vilken ny teknik som kan användas samt hur väl den lämpar sig för ändamålet.

     

    Arbetet behandlar effektivisering i tre tidsperspektiv: vad som skulle kunna förbättras redan imorgon, vad som skulle kunna ske inom ett par månaders tid samt vad som kan komma att vara aktuellt om ett par år. För att undersöka hur sorteringen skulle kunna förbättras utförs sorteringsförsök på Ragn Sells anläggning i Högbytorp där den optimala sorteringsgraden söks. Av de observationer som erhålls på plats under försöken på Högbytorp ges också förslag på vad som kan förbättras i sorteringen. Den avslutande delen med ny teknik för sortering undersöks genom studiebesök hos Zen Robotics och deras robotsorteringsanläggning. Zen Robotics anläggning jämförs tekniskt och ekonomiskt med andra lösningar som skulle kunna användas för sortering av blandat avfall.

     

    Resultatet av undersökningarna visar att man i dagsläget inte sorterar avfallet på det mest lönsamma sättet. Genom att ändra hur sorteringen sker och anpassa sorteringen mer efter varje situation kan lönsamheten ökas.  Kalkylen mellan de olika nya teknikerna visar på att det är svårt att få sorteringen lönsammare med ny teknik än vad som nås med den manuella sortering som sker i praktiken idag. Undersökningarna kring den nya tekniken visar även på problematiken kring att det faktum att teknikerna inte är anpassade för avfall och ytterligare undersökningar krävs innan en komplett kalkyl kan utföras. I kalkylen är Zen Robotics det minst lönsamma alternativet, men det behöver bekräftas med mer omfattande undersökningar. Arbetet innefattar 15 hp och utförs under en period på 10 veckor mellan mars och juni 2015.

    The structure of the thesis is based on opportunities to attract businesses to the region, the need of establishments in the region and benchmarking with establishment strategies of other cluster initiatives. The identified opportunities are the local business relationship with ABB, the prerequisites of life quality in the region and the availability of financial support. Further on has a number of opportunities to be developed been identified; diversification of the existing businesses, an expansion of the cooperation with universities and to simplify the contact with local authorities. Challenges that HVV is facing is: creating a more dynamic labor market, secure long-term labor supply, spread the image of the brand HVV and finally putting HVVs geographic scope. Two of the identified needs of establishments are strategically important: to establish a third-party logistician and commercializing systems for distributed generation and energy storage. Strategically HVV should identify their core areas and limiting operations to areas with strong growth potential.

    Collaboration in practice: A multiple case study on collaboration between small enterprises and university researchers2018Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    University-industry collaborations (UICs) have been hailed as key for Sweden's innovativeness and economic growth. Similarly, building research and innovation policies for the promotion of collaboration between universities and industry have become a cornerstone for many other European countries.

    In academic literature there has been an emphasis on efficiency, facilitation, effects and values obtained in UICs. They have been widely studied, both in terms of the reasons why they are formed, their structure and the effects they create, but not much in terms of how they work on a daily basis. There is less attention in the literature to analyse or problematise how UIC work is carried out when a connection has already been formed or is repeatedly enacted. Additionally, there is also a lack of studies looking at small firms UICs. Through identifying a lack of perspective in the UIC literature this thesis builds on the recent developments in practice theory in addressing some of the gaps found. It thus analyses these collaborations from a perspective not present in the literature in pursuit of how UICs are carried out.

    Through four embedded case studies between small enterprises and university researchers the thesis questions some of the assumptions made in the UIC literature and policy documents. First of all, through the practice theory lens, the thesis shows how the creation of a node/linchpin, a boundary object or a broker, between university and industry is instrumental in enabling collaboration work to take place. Secondly, being able to work together successfully does not equal outcomes sought after by policy organisations. Nevertheless, a general conclusion is that there were valuable outcomes for both the companies and the researchers, confirming previous research on UICs. But, these benefits were often difficult to put into clear numbers or metrics and appeared only after a very long time.

    The thesis argues that policy (and associated organisations) should promote the connection between a research site/practices and a company site/practices rather than pushing for a joint practice. In such a way UICs can be valuable for both researchers and companies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to examine how an organization works with adjusting to a problem from the top to the bottom in solving of the problem. The study is being done during a period of 10 weeks within a local government authority in Sweden. An audit that was carried out some years ago criticized the organization regarding the lack of coordination between the different levels of management, both the political and administrative. The organization attempted to change the way it manages its planning and monitoring has not been successful. This study investigates how these changes have been implemented throughout all levels of the organization. This study concludes that changes in organizations within a government need time when implementing changes. Local governments are regulated by laws that will have an impact on when changes might be needed or possible. Other conclusions are that managing by objectives may not lead to a better coordination between different levels of management. In fact it might lead to less coordination.

    Abstract [en]

    Cost of poor quality describes what the lack of quality costs an organization. By understanding what the concept is and how it can be translated into a specific organization, it creates the conditions for eliminating them, and it can generate a saving of up to 30% of the organization's turnover.

    The study has been carried out at ABB Industrial Automation Control Technologies in Västerås within the group ABB AB. This work has focused on visualizing the problem and how it could be attacked. The purpose of the thesis is, "… to generate evidence about the management of drawings, as well as to propose measures that can improve this process. The aim is also to help ensure that there is a process where suppliers always produce based on the right and most recent edition. "

    The processes of drawing management have been visualized based on information from interviews, observations and secondary data that have been based on information from routines together with governing documents. Thereafter, deficiencies in this drawing management process have been identified and also the causes.

    The result from the thesis is a process mapping with identified shortcomings and the causes of these. A specification has been prepared for guidelines on how ABB Industrial Automation Control Technologies will work with improvements on this process.

    Abstract [en]

    Korngården AB is the biggest hop producer in Sweden. They are

    located in the south of the country and their farm currently

    consists of 5000 m2. Korngården AB is a newly founded company and

    is just starting up its business. The next step forward in their

    development is investing in a hop harvester. Therefore, in this

    thesis a first draft for a portable hop harvester is presented.

    The goal of this project was to design a machine that can be

    easily transported between hop farms in the vicinity and harvest

    50 – 100 bines per hour.

    Starting up this project a study of hop harvesting solutions was

    made. To give this project a target I was provided with a

    specification of user demands by Korngården AB. During the concept

    generation different solutions were developed and with the help of

    a Pugh matrix the solutions was compared against each other. The

    chosen concept was 3-D modeled in the CAD program SolidWorks.

    During this process a number of companies was contacted to get an

    idea of what this hop harvester would cost to produce. This turned

    in to the cost estimate which was one of the goals of this thesis.

    From the 3-d models assembly drawings was created.

    The result of this thesis is a hop harvester that strips the bines

    using steel picking fingers that hits the cones and leaves of the

    bine. The cones and leaves are then separated using a series of

    tilted rubber bands. When exiting the striping section the bine

    will be chopped into smaller pieces using a wood chipper. At the

    moment the cost estimate shows that the hop harvester would cost

    around 200 000 sek to produce which is 25 000 sek more than what

    Korngården AB specified in their specification of user demands.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the thesis work is to map, explain, propose and follow up on solutions to quality problems in a small growing IT company in an attempt to reduce or completely eliminate costs of poor quality. The report includes theory of change management, process and quality management, process maturity, agile methods, characteristic features for IT companies, DMAIC project tool and challenges for growing companies. It is a case study that is based predominantly on qualitative primary data. Data has been collected using a customer survey, as well as observations and interviews with employees and management.

    The result shows that the organization is struggling with quality problems. The problems look slightly different depending on which department is being reviewed. In the development department, which works with large projects over a long period of time, the main problem is lack of complete customer requirement specifications. At the Operations Department the main problem is that they are unable to test according to needs.

    Cunclusions to be drawn is that there are quality deficiencies related to testing and requirements specification within the IT company. Part of the reasons behind the problems is the lack of structure and follow-up. Three action plans have been drawn up to address the problems. A follow-up plan has also been created, which includes both follow-up of statistical data and feedback from employees and customers.

    This thesis was conducted at AB Fredr Wagner in Ösmo in Nynäshamn, Sweden.AB Fredr Wagner provides solutions for the graphic industry and has been asked by acustomer to develop a product that can simplify handling of EUR-pallets, namely amechanical arrangement, further called pallet exchanger that can switch from anempty pallet to a fully loaded one using only hand force.The goal with the thesis was to create design documents for a pallet exchanger, andalso from those documents to manufacture a prototype for testing and evaluation.A field trip was made to the customer, IKAB mailing in Huddinge, where the palletexchanger is thought to be placed. The purpose of this field trip was to get an insightinto the current work condition and need of change, as well as to gather informationregarding the requirements when it comes to size and robustness of the palletexchanger. Existing equipment on the market that can perform similar tasks werestudied in order to find an optimal solution for the actual pallet exchanger.After the field trip and gathering of information the concept generating phase began.The method used for generating concepts was brainstorming. To decide on whichconcept to use, a concept selection matrix was created. The selection criteriaincluded in the matrix came from the requirements for the pallet exchanger. Themanufacturing of the pallet exchanger took place in the workshop of AB FredrWagner.The result is a prototype that can hold two fully loaded pallets and one empty pallet.With this prototype, production stops because an empty pallet needs to be switchedfor a new one can be avoided. The prototype’s scissor lift provides also a betterworking environment when it comes to ergonomics.

    Abstract [en]

    Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University has been researching and developed a wave energy converter, WEC, since 2006. The WEC is based on a linear generator that is grounded on the seabed, in the generator the translator is linked with a large buoy on the sea surface via a wire. When the buoy follows the wave motion up and down, the translator also follows the same path, which generates energy. Thus using the energy of the waves to extract electricity. 

    However, for the WEC to operate at an optimal level the wire need to be at a specific length, thus the WEC needs to be compensated against the tide. Therefore, a system for tensioning and unloading the wire connecting the buoy with the translator has been developed. The system is equipped with a battery that needs to be charged, this thesis is a part of the development of a small WEC that can deliver energy for the battery. The task is to develop and construct a smaller WEC which is to be placed on the big buoy to generate energy without affecting the larger WEC´s functionality. 

    The purpose of the project is to design a CAD model for a small WEC based on a theoretically tested model by Camilla Tumlin. In order to provide a basis for the design of the small WEC a preliminary study of different WEC´s from a number of manufacturers was carried out, as well as an analysis of the wave pattern at the planned location for the WEC. 

    Concepts for the WEC's main parts were developed and evaluated using Concept Selection Matrices in addition to discussions with the supervisor and clients. Some of the details were developed in collaboration with manufacturers. The thesis resulted in a design proposal for the WEC. CAD files and drawings were given to the client for manufacturing of a prototype. 

    The design solution meets all product requirements, apart from the weight of the moving parts. However, the requirement for the weight was approved by the client. Further development can investigate whether the weight can be reduced. The next step of the project is to produce a prototype of the WEC, the prototype can then be performance tested in order to assure its functionality.

    This thesis is the basis for a study on flow efficiency at production line 1 at the company Galderma in Uppsala in spring 2018. The company is in great need of streamlining its production to satisfy the demand on the market. This makes Galderma need to map its production to find areas where time gains can be made, as well as improvement proposals that can increase the workforce's work situation with regard to ergonomics.

     The investigation began with a survey of the process on the production line. This was done together with active staff. Of the identified improvements and improvement proposals that were then evaluated, some of them were considered more relevant to further develop. Two new improved parts were manufactured in the workshop to facilitate the handling of the lid and the settlement. These parts were one to the cover of the lid to make it possible to look through and keep track of the magazine's level. The second part of the settlement was also made in a much easier material for easier handling and to remove the torque when the templates were needed to be removed to see if the associated box was empty.

     The proposed enhancement proposal would increase the current bottleneck's capacity by over 100%, from 12 units / min to 27 units / min per sealing machine. The efficiency that was done on the bottleneck was to propose a new change to the workflow around the machine to reach the machine's operating speed. Unnecessary moments were moved to later parts of the process, and the material is then prepared outside of the operating hours. This becomes possible when two extra operators are added to the bottleneck.

     Thanks to the capacity increase of the bottleneck, there is no intermediate storage after settlement, which means that a batch termination / boot up does not need to be done, this result in the ability to run a batch over the entire flow. There will be a 30-minute time saving per batch, and at least one operator will be released from the settlement that can be moved to the required parts of the flow.

    Abstract [en]

    This study aims to use the quality principle: Customer Focus, based from the concept of Total Quality Management, as a base for an empirical study. The chosen organization that has been the subject of the study is GotlandsHem AB, the largest housing agent on Gotland island. The study has been carried out as a project and has been based on a preliminary study that was previously carried out in the spring, 2019. The preliminary study showed seven problem areas within the organization, one of which was chosen to be the focus of the project. The problem area has been named Customer Perspective and deals with which perspectives GotlandsHem uses today as a basis for the daily activities. A crucial principle that many companies today are trying to maintain, is the quality principle: Customer Focus. The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate which principles related to their customers, GotlandsHem uses today. The purpose also includes how the company can use Customer Focus to better understand how they can use their own principles to control their daily work and affect Customer Satisfaction. The design for the study is qualitative with a deductive approach. The study design for the study is a case study and the data collection method used is semi-structured interviews. The study is based on several theoretical concepts: Customer, Customer Satisfaction, TQM, Quality, and Customer Focus. The theoretical background also deals with measurement of Customer Satisfaction and Quality.The result showed that there are different perceptions about whether GotlandsHem works according to the quality principle: Customer Focus. It also revealed the current principles GotlandsHem works according by today.

    Opportunities and challenges in the management of an innovation laboratory: A case study of Semcon Innovation Lab2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Innovation laboratories are environments especially designed for carrying out the innovation process. They are an example of a new kind of organisational structure that has emerged as a managerial response to challenges associated with organisational dynamic capability development. Using a mixed-method approach, this thesis attempts to create an understanding for the challenges and opportunities that exist in the management of an innovation laboratory, both on a level of organisational innovation and of individual creativity. The componential model of creativity and innovation in organisations is used as a framework for analysis of an innovation laboratory in the case company, the tech consultancy firm Semcon.

    The results confirm that there is a lack of clarity in the conceptualisation of innovation labs. Some important findings are that the implementation of an innovation laboratory could in itself be seen as an opportunity, but that acting in the borderland between the objectives of profitability and creativity could prove a challenge. A challenge may also lie in maintaining a realistic view of the actual abilities of the innovation laboratory. Cross-functional collaboration between consultants seems to bring opportunities in that it may contribute to knowledge creation and transfer within the firm, but there is a challenge in that teams are in need of leaders with skills in creativity management and agile project management, but also technical expertise. A general conclusion for managing innovation laboratories is that they need enough resources to have room for mistakes. The findings have implications for the management of existing innovation laboratories and those in the planning.

    Abstract [en]

    Autonomous cars or robot cars have been on the agenda ever since Hollywood started with their Sci-Fi genre, maybe even before that. A lo tof things have happened since then and now the self-driving vehicle is not far away. In this project, the Autonomous car with microcontroller and ultrasonic sensors, we are looking at a way of making a small, regular RC car autonomous with relatively simple means and investigate how the big companies does it to learn more aboutt he development of the autonomous cars and their technology.

    We used an Arduino Uno R3 supplemented with an Arduino Motor Shield R3 as our microcontroller board and three HCSR04 ultrasonic sensors. By removing almost all of the old parts of the RC car, except the two DC motors, and replacing them with these new parts we managed to make a vehicle that drove around in a room without crashing into anything. We could have used entirely different sensors, or supplemented the existing setup with other sensors to make it even more accurate and obstacle avoiding. But for our purpose the three ultrasonic sensors did the job. There is always place for optimizing in projects like this one, in our case we could have been optimizing our code more, to make thec ar perform even better.

    Studies show that the success of a construction project depends onits initial design work. Thus, it’s interesting to investigate howensuring design work quality is done. Since the mid 70’s SKB has worked on how the final repository of spent long-lived nuclearfuel should be built to satisfy the requirement of total repository from the people and environment for a period of 100,000 years. The project is large and consists of many subprojects; where one of them is carried out by WSP. The quality work in this project has been evaluated to see how the ensuring of reaching required quality and expectations.

    This type of project can be assumed to be complex both to control and execute, in terms of structural complexity, technical complexity and uncertain complexity. By characterizing the project due to its surroundings, content and organizational behaviour and to them apply the dimensions of complexity the aim of the study is to identify how the complexity has effect the quality work. To understand this, semi structured interviews with the project organization has been done.

    The result of the study shows that especially the structural complexity, mainly by the number of collaborated departments, affects the quality work. Also uncertain complexity affects the quality work, due to unclear contract between client and supplier. To receive better quality work in the future the coordination between different departments needs to be better. This involves for example establish project specific methods and routines, for all in the project to use. To be able to deliver successful projects one presumption is that client and supplier agreed on what is to be delivered. If the project scope isn’t clear agreedupon, a satisfied client can never be reached.

    Fallstudien har sin grund från en tidigare förstudie där det framkom att den samarbetande organisationens största problem var bristande struktur och processorientering. Inför examensprojektet valde organisationen att närmare granska delprocessen köpa i deras kundprocess. Syftet för studien var att processkartlägga organisationens nuläge i deras köp-process. Syftet var också att identifiera aktiviteter som organisationen genomförde som inte var värdeskapande, lämna implementeringsförslag om hur processen kunde effektiviseras samt hur organisationen kunde implementera hållbarhetsfaktorer i processen.

    Vald teori omfattade processledning, definitioner kring processer, leverantörsamverkan och andra kvalitetstekniska grunder som förbättringscyklar och slöserier från Lean management. Examensprojektet hade en deduktiv ansats där studien gjorde jämförelser med vad som ansågs vara en korrekt process jämfört med organisationens för att kunna identifiera vad som saknas eller inte överensstämmer.

    Resultatet kartlade nuläget och efterföljande analys påvisade att organisationen arbetar dels med för många leverantörer för att, berörda avdelningar arbetar övergripande manuellt vilket skapar ledtider och organisationen sätter inte mål efter kärnprocesser utan avdelningar vilket kompliceras när kärnprocesserna skär igenom flera avdelningar i organisationen.

    Slutsatserna var att organisationen måste ändra sin finansiella målstyrning till kvalitetstekniska där de först utser ett processägarskap för kärnprocesserna, sedan sätter mål och uppföljningstal för processerna. Organisationen behöver börja arbeta med miljömässiga frågor om de ska kunna hållbarhetsredovisa i framtiden, och även där fanns en orsak till att minska leverantörantalet då de måste eftersträva kontroll hos sina partners, tillverkare och leverantörer för att kunna leverera en trovärdig hållbarhetsredovisning.

    Atlas Copco Craelius har vid årsskiftet 2011-2012 genomfört en flytt av större delar avlagret då en ökad produktion med tiden har medfört att lagret blivit för litet.Hanteringen av ankommande gods och plock av artiklar till monteringen har inteutvecklats i samma takt som företaget och är därför i behov av modernisering. Idagsläget placeras allt ankommande gods på gården och registrerades sedan i turordningi affärssystemet Movex. Detta sätt att arbeta medför att då det kommer stora volymerankommande gods tar det lång tid innan allt registreras. Atlas Copco Craelius har pgaav detta arbetssätt ingen möjlighet att veta vilka artiklar som finns bland det gods somblir stående i väntan på att läggas in i lager och registreras. Därför vill Atlas CopcoCraelius ta fram ett nytt arbetssätt som gör det möjligt att veta vad som har kommit såfort som möjligt för att sedan kunna lagerlägga och registrera i turordning.På grund av sättet som lagret har arbetat har det inte funnits några möjligheter att mätahur lång tid det tar att lägga in ankommande gods eller hur lång tid det tar från att ettplock kommer ut till lagret tills det att plocket levereras till monteringen. Atlas CopcoCraelius är därför i behov av att implementera nya arbetssätt som gör det möjligt attinför KPI:er (Key Performance Indicator) .Arbetet är fokuserat på att förbättra flödet genom lagret till produktionen genom att tafram nya arbetssätt och KPI:er för godsmottagningen och produktionsteknikerna somansvarar för plocken samt för plockarna. Arbetet har delats in i tre faser för att skapa entydlig struktur. Dessa faser är dokumentation av nuläget, benchmarking med andraföretag samt framtagning av nya arbetssätt och KPI:er.När dokumentationen i första fasen blivit klar och därmed kan fungera som en bas förbenchmarking utfördes studiebesök och dokumentering på två andra företag för attkunna undersöka vilka områden som var i behov av förbättring genom benchmarking.Denna benchmarking ligger sedan tillsammans med idéer och önskemål från anställdatill grund för utformandet av de nya arbetsrutinerna som denna rapport presenterar.

    Abstract [en]

    Background: Healthcare research funders may undertake various roles to facilitate implementation of research findings. Their ability to enact such roles depends on several factors, knowledge of implementation being one essential requirement. However, previous studies do not assess the type or level of knowledge about implementation that research funders possess. This paper therefore presents findings from a qualitative, inductive study of the implementation knowledge of research funders. Three aspects of this knowledge are explored, namely how research funders define implementation, their level of self-assessed implementation knowledge and the factors influencing their self-assessment of implementation knowledge.

    Methods: Research funders (n = 18) were purposefully selected from a sample of research funding organisations in Sweden (n = 10). In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted, recorded and transcribed verbatim. An inductive method using a systematic coding procedure was employed to derive the findings.

    Results: The research funders defined implementation as either an outcome or a process, with the majority believing that implementation of healthcare research results demands a process, although its complexity varied in the research funders’ view. They perceived their own level of implementation knowledge as either limited or substantial, with a majority regarding it as limited. Clinical research experience, clinical experience and task relevance were singled out as the clearest factors affecting the self-assessment of their own implementation knowledge.

    Conclusions: This study, the first to focus on implementation knowledge of research funders, demonstrates that they are a category of policy-makers who may possess knowledge, based on their previous professional experience, that is comparable to some important findings from implementation research. Consequently, the findings not only pinpoint the relevance of professional experience, but also reveal a lack of awareness and knowledge of the results of implementation research among research funders in charge of healthcare research.

    Background

    Implementation of clinical research results is challenging, yet the responsibility for implementation is seldom addressed. The process from research to the use of clinical research results in health care can be facilitated by research funders. In this paper, we report the roles of ten Swedish research funders in relation to implementation and their views on responsibilities in implementation.

    Findings

    Ten cases were studied and compared using semi-structured interviews. In addition, websites and key documents were reviewed. Eight facilitative roles for research funders in relation to the implementation of clinical research results were identified. Three of them were common for several funders: “Advocacy work,” “Monitoring implementation outcomes,” and “Dissemination of knowledge.” Moreover, the research funders identified six different actors responsible for implementation, five of which belonged to the healthcare setting. Collective and organizational responsibilities were the most common forms of responsibilities among the identified actors responsible for implementation.

    Conclusions

    The roles commonly identified by the Swedish funders, “Advocacy work,” “Monitoring implementation outcomes,” and “Dissemination of knowledge,” seem feasible facilitative roles in relation to the implementation of clinical research results. However, many actors identified as responsible for implementation together with the fact that collective and organizational responsibilities were the most common forms of responsibilities entail a risk of implementation becoming no one’s responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this report is to review the current conditions exsisting for the implementation of Internet of Things in apartment buildings and how insight can be accomplished for these conditions in real estate companies. Internet of Things is a technology which has increased in popularity in later years and builds on objects connecting to each other or the internet. In conjunction with the reduction of implementation costs for the technology and the increase of possible applications, an interest has grown in many different business sectors. This study concerns the real estate company FinaHem, where the conditions for measurement of different values using connected sensors is analyzed. To answer the formulated questions regarding technological efficiency, financial factors and how a potential solution using Internet of Things would be recieved by tenants, this paper is designed as a case study. The case study evaluates the operations of FinaHem and utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as a business case method. The result and the analysis from the study indicates important factors for the company’s conditions to implement Internet of Things. Technological solutions regarding energy savings, detections of water damage, and visualisation has exhibited business value. Furthermore, the importance of evaluating opinions from residents, and creating a positive experience for them, is established.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to examine how investments are justified in the Swedish data center industry, with a focus on cooling equipment. This is achieved through semi-structured interviews with 20 different interviewees. These interviewees represent different facets of the industry and facilitate an understanding of which factors, such as: investment costs, operating costs, reliability, environmental impact and the influence of external and internal actors, come into play and to which degree they impact the investment decision-making process. The results show that primarily low operating cost in the form of low energy consumption is the driving factor when it comes to the procurement of new equipment. A lower environmental impact is a positive side-effect of lower energy consumption. But alone it does not justify an additional investment. Data center downtime has a negative impact financially and can also adversely affect various functions critical to society. Therefore, the dependability of the equipment is still a priority, but reliability is now considered to have reached such a level that it is considered acceptable and the focus of development has shifted towards energy efficiency.

    The interview study is complemented by an investment-theory review of articles and books on related subject matter. This subject matter is linked directly or indirectly to disposition of investment in the data center industry. The framework developed from the review is then compared to the interview results. Results indicate that decision and investment theory in many cases can also be applied to data center investments. Theories that are more environmentally and socially oriented, such as Triple Bottom Line, are not consistent with the empirical data from the interviews. The investment decisions are also influenced by the current high availability and high reliability of data centers, which is the reason why the industry is rife with inertia, conservatism and skepticism to new solutions. Consequently, the parallel between data centers and high risk organizations, HRO, brought a new approach to how priorities are evaluated within HROs, namely that it is possible to combine high reliability with a low environmental impact.

    The results of the study are used as the basis to establish a marketing plan for the company SEE Cooling, a startup company that supplies cooling equipment. This marketing plan is based on the models for: Network analysis, Porter's five forces analysis, SWOT analysis and Kotler's marketing mix. The resulting marketing plan offers proposals on how SEE Cooling shall navigate their business network to overcome conservatism and promote their products, and illustrates potential difficulties.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis has been carried out to the Technology Group at industrial plant Tube Mill

    2012, which belongs to the Sandvik AB. Technology Group is a unit that takes care of

    all requirements and suggestions regarding investigations, test runs and design

    modifications. The main objective is to identify and analyze the existing initialization

    process to see where improvement opportunities exist and to come up with

    suggestions for improvement, supported by previous research and literature. An

    extensive literature search and case study has been conducted to provide a solid

    foundation to refer to during the work. Completing the interviews and the workshop

    gave a clear picture of their unstructured work and approach, how the low

    requirements on the received orders caused problems for the group as well as the

    lack of a standardized resource allocation method provides major delay factors.

    Solution proposal then became a very easy process model in five steps with all the

    information gathered in one place. Each step has its own side but a bulleted list that is

    used for the record which gives the work a very lucid and clear status explanation.

    Further research proposals for the development of their resource allocation, and to

    start working in teams are given.

    Abstract [en]

    This project was initiated to develop an improved design for the

    antenna measurement scanner used by researchers in the fields of

    millimeterwave technology and antenna design.

    The purpose of the scanner is to measure the properties of the

    signal transmitted and received by antennas. This is achieved by

    having the measurement module positioned by an automated arm. The

    arm can position the module on defined points in a hemisphere

    around the antennas to be measured. The module is connected to a

    network analyzer that is synchronized with the automatic arm to

    make measurments and store the data.

    The previous antenna scanner was large and not accurate enough. It

    was complicated and potentially dangerous to use. This led to the

    initiation of this project.

    The project aimed at developing a redesigned prototype by reusing

    the components from the existing scanner.

    To develop a new design for the antenna scanner the project

    included a design study, a product development process and

    prototyping. Focus has been kept on careful planning and short

    downtime for the scanner.

    The project resulted in a new design of the scanner which led to

    significant improvements of user friendliness, safety and

    accuracy.

    This report includes a more detailed introduction to the project

    followed by a report on how it was carried out and what it

    resulted in, including discussions and conclusions about the

    project and the product it resulted in.

    This thesis uses a case study approach and investigates how the institutional environment has an impact on decision making regarding sales within three departments at WSP Management in Sweden. With the application of neo-institutional frameworks, the study explains how decision making is constrained by the institution and the actors that make up the institutional environment, as well as how a pursuit for stability and legitimacy isolate engineering consultant companies from other sectors within the market.

     

    The study concludes that the institutional environments inducements have created a sales structure within the departments that is solely focused on the public sector and acquiring contracts through public procurement. This sales structure is heavily imprinted within the departments and has created a culture where employees rely in department management to solely sell their services to potential customers. The success and efficiency within this institutional environment has made it that the departments key performance indicator-demands from upper the upper management are based on a sales structure that requires little or no proactive sales. The inducements within the regulative institutional environment thus has a big impact on their decision making when they are trying to maintain a financial stability in relation to the company’s upper management. With the current structure they have been placed in an institutional comfort zone in which they will be stuck within if no change is made.

    This thesis has been conducted inassociation with ÅF Infrastructure AB in Borlänge, Sweden. Within ÅF Infrastructure and other ÅF divisions it is common to make use of the geographically dispersed employees in virtual project teams. Some of the advantages from working in virtual teams are financial, due to the fact that a company can save money in recruiting costs, office rents and travel costs.Thanks to the technological progress since the start of the 1990’s the use of virtual teams is being considered a common way to cooperate nowadays. With the advantages though comes disadvantages, pitfalls and challenges to face for the virtual team toovercome.The purpose of this thesis was to conducta case study to find out how ÅF make use of virtual teams. With this in regard, the statement of issues for this bachelor thesis were the following: is the casestudy for this project affected by being geographically dispersed and how can the eventually negative consequences be fixed and improved, and how are the common virtual team pit falls and challenges handled and how can this make use in future projects? To answer these questions the decision was made to conduct a literature study, observation study and an interview study with the project members in the casestudy. During the literature study facts concerning the area of virtual teams and project management were gathered and made use of during the interview and observation study. The conclusion of this thesis was that the case study project isaffected by being geographically dispersed, but handles pit falls and challenges well in most cases. Some of the areas they can improve is first and farmost the meeting arrangements, where they are recommended to focus on effectiveness, preparations and include more videoconferencing. One of the approaches they can make use of in future projects are thekick off meeting, where they should focus on really make sure that every team member is aware of the projects goals, their own involvement and the scope of their assignment.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis was to describe how a manual assembly process of polycarbonate sheets for heat exchangers can be automated with an industrial robot. The objectives were to design suitable robot cell concepts and simulate them to describe how the automated process could be done and to present which machines and equipment that could be used. Additionally, productivity rates and investment costs was to be calculated.The project started with a situation assessment and a literature review. Experts and suppliers of robotic equipment were consulted, and the results served as a basis for the concept generation process. Several concept ideas were evaluated, and three ideas using adhesive for the assembly were chosen for further studies and simulation. Existing products and machines were used in the designs when possible. By modeling and simulating the cells in simulation software, feasible cell designs was created, and cycle times were measured.The three proposed solutions all utilize an industrial robot, a vacuum gripper and adhesive as the assembly method. Two of the concepts has the robot attending different adhesive dispensing machines; one gantry and one conveyor. In the third concept, the robot applies the adhesive. The cell design that achieved the lowest cycle time in the simulations was the conveyor concept, with a cycle time of 21 seconds per sheet. The conclusion of the study is that investing in a robot cell would increase productivity.

    Business Process Management (BPM) has become a popular concept inbusiness development in recent years. Traditionally, however, researchsurrounding BPM initiatives have centered on large organizations,meaning that little is known about the effects of BPM, both positive andnegative, on a Small- and Medium sized Organization (SMO).This research identifies problems that a SMO can face when workingtoward higher process orientation and provides an explanation as to whyefforts have failed in the past. Furthermore, the requirements forimplementing BPM from a process-execution perspective wereinvestigated. The issues that arise to limit success of the BPM initiativehave been identified and discussed in relation to existing literature onBPM implementation, particularly those issues that are unique to SMOs.Through better understanding of the requirements for a successful BPMinitiative, the SMO is able to identify the areas that it need to beaddressed specifically before the organization is able to reach higherprocess orientation.

    Det psykosociala välmåendet bland personalen inom daglig verksamhet har en stor påverkan på brukarnas egen utveckling. Behovet av arbetsträning för personer med viss funktionsnedsättning grundas idag på Lagen om stöd och service, de personer som får beslut beviljat för denna form av arbetsträning blir placerade på en daglig verksamhet för att i framtiden kan kliva ut i arbetslivet och hantera ett yrke som för många av oss inte ses som en större utmaning.

    Den tidsbrist som råder bland personalen leder i sin tur till att brukarna ej får den hjälp de behöver och dessvärre bromsas deras utveckling och första steget ut i arbetslivet glider allt längre ifrån dem. Den enskilde individen har sina behov som personalen behöver ta hänsyn till men idag ej hinns med då personalen har för många brukare var att ansvara för.

    Resurserna i verksamheten är för få för att ta hand om de personer som med laggrundande beslut har rätt till hjälpen. Tidsoptimeringen för arbetsuppgifterna och en kartläggning av vad som bör prioriteras kan generera till en behagligare arbetsplats men främst en kvalitetssäkring där brukaren är i centrum.

    This bachelor thesis has been carried out in collaboration with Maximatecc AB. In their office in Alfta they work with product development of both hardware andsoftware for various kinds of products including display computers and controllers for different kinds of equipment. In the product development process its common that several different kinds of additive manufactured (3D-printed) prototypes are ordered from an external company.

    The main objective with this thesis is to increase the knowledge about different kinds of additive manufacturing technologies that exists and are relevant for the company and how and why prototypes are important for the product development process. It will also with the help of interviews and observations at the company investigate how additive technologies are used today at Maximatecc and what other needs of the technology that exists. By doing so it will be determined if there is a need to buy an3D-printer or continue to order the service from an external company. A practical part of this thesis is to see if a component manufactured with different kinds of additive technologies is suitable to work as a substitute to an injection molded part in a product during the prototype phase.

    There could be a need for to buy a 3D-printer that uses FDM (fused depositionmodelling) -technology but it will not replace the need to buy in additive manufactured prototypes from an external company. This is because of the different kinds of desired attributes of the prototypes used during the product development process and the advantages and disadvantages of the different kinds of technologies.

    It was also concluded that components manufactured with additive technology could be used as a part in a functional product during the prototype phase. This could be used to send fully working prototypes to customers early in the product development process.

    Abstract [en]

    Leadership and entrepreneurship have often been associated to the ability of guiding ventures, but less to the ability of leading a startup community. This master’s thesis examines literature on entrepreneurship, in particular Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE), to understand the role of leadership in sustaining a startup community. Although Stam’s (2015) EE framework recognizes that leadership enables entrepreneurship, it doesn’t define its characteristics and therefore, a more theoretical understanding is demanded. We have thus developed a conceptual framework that aims to facilitate empirical explorations and future analyses of the leadership dimension of Stam’s (2015) EE framework. Our conceptual framework of Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) includes the following characteristics: collective and bottom-up approach, presence of formal and informal leaders, promotion of social proximity and mentorship driven leadership. The use of interviews as research method and our EL conceptual framework as analytical tool was useful to explore and understand the current state of EL in the startup communities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. On the one hand, the startup community of Amsterdam experiences a shared leadership where formal and informal leaders are recognized. Moreover, the strong presence of supporting organizations, networks of mentors and entrepreneurial events favour interaction among the stakeholders of the EE. On the other hand, Utrecht, a smaller and younger startup community, lacks success entrepreneurial stories that results in supporting organizations exercising the leadership role. Furthermore, there is a poor presence of entrepreneurial events and networks of entrepreneurs that lead to an unconnected community.

    Abstract [en]

    The capability to know what knowledge there is and where it resides within an organization is becoming increasingly important in the new knowledge-based economy. This paper takes on a practise-based view of knowledge in order to decide on a course of action for how to successfully implement knowledge management within a knowledge-based company. By considering all knowledge as more or less contextual and socially constructed, knowledge is divided into three dimensions depending on the degree to which it is tacit, namely: information, knowledge and skills. The paper then discusses inhibitors and enablers for transferring knowledge via these three dimensions respectively. 

    The empirical findings are based upon a case study of Faveo. It is shown that Faveo, like most organizations, has til now focused on the collection of codified knowledge, i.e. documentation of information. Faveo has the technology established to potentiallymanage information transfer to an adequate degree. Still, the company fails to do so due to its incapability to enable use of its groupware. To surmount this problem, Faveo needs to address the attitudes of its employees towards its groupware and train them in how to use it. To improve Faveo’s knowledge management and thus pursue world class project management, the company also needs to step up its game within the two areas of knowledge and skills transfer. There are some but not sufficient plans for handling knowledge transfer at Faveo and, again, Faveo fails to enable these processes to turn from plans into action. There is an overall need for more formal as well as informal interaction between individual and groups of employees at Faveo. In addition, Faveo needs to acknowledge skills transfer as a vital part of knowledge management.

    This report finally suggests that Faveo needs to motivate knowledge management, create goals for knowledge management, train its employees in how to carry out knowledge management and evaluate its knowledge management.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis was performed at Zetterbergs Industri AB. Zetterbergs is designing, building and mounts body systems for trucks, including dumpers and tippers. The assignment for the thesis was to design a door hinge for a spreader gate. The spreader gate is the top of the two tailgates on a dumper or tipper and opens back and outwards when tipping the cargo. The spreader gate controls the mass flow of the material being tipped. Zetterbergs want to offer their customers an opportunity to also open the spreader gate as a door and place it along the outside of the tipper to get easier access to the platform when loading equipment. They already have an existing solution for both the tipper and the dumper, but there is a need to improve and coordinate these solutions. The existing solution is not entirely rigid which causes problems of sagging when used, and a result of this is heavy lifting for the operator.

     

    The process with designing a new hinge began with an initial study where, among others, the existing hinge and prototype solutions of the hinge at Zetterbergs were examined. To get to understand the process and which parts that needed to be taken into consideration when designing, a participation in the production was made. The initial study was finalized with the preparation of a user and technical specification.

     

    Following the initial study several concepts was generated with a method called “ the five step method”.  Afterwards the concepts were evaluated and compared which lead to the selection of one of the concepts for a final design.

     

    The result of this thesis is a door hinge with tree different configurations. Those three configurations were made to fit the combinations between tipper and dumper as well as aluminum and steel hatch. The hinges are similar to each other and only a few details separate them. All components in the door hinge are adjusted for the production at Zetterbergs. The door hinge is designed in a way that prevents the operator from using it improperly.
