    Abstract [en]

    This report deals with environmental improvement measures in asphalt production

    and examines the willingness to invest in environmentally friendly technologies. The

    main reasons of this paper are that the asphalt industry have a large impact on the

    environment and the transition to green technologies is slow, and to clarify the

    opportunities around environmentally friendly asphalt production.

    The main purpose of this report is to compile relevant knowledge in the

    improvement of the environmental measures of the asphalt production and thus

    contribute to a faster reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The questions covered

    are:

    • How has the asphalt been used over time and until?

    • How does the asphalt industry effect the environment?

    • What are the technical solutions?

    • What are the costs of the different technical solutions?

    • What is the trend for more environmentally friendly asphalt production?

    The thesis was concluded through literature studies, consultations with people in the

    asphalt industry and trough several interviews.

    The results of the report show that there are many different measures to reduce the

    environmental impacts from asphalt production, and the main challenge for producers

    is to choose which method is most suitable for their company.

    The interviews report that the willingness to invest in environmentally improving

    techniques exists and that the trend to produce more environmentally friendly will

    increase. Increased requirements and a greater demand for environmentally friendly

    asphalt production from customers are desired.

    Abstract [en]

    This diploma work was conducted in collaboration with the Swedish civil engineering

    construction company Skanska Construction in Stockholm. Their interest is to

    develop a number of type approved form constructions which can be used during the

    construction of concrete walls. Skanska focuses on improving safety on their projects

    and both supervisors and workers have a need for approved form constructions in

    the current situation.

    The study is focused on safety and the purpose is to facilitate the preparation before

    the form work can begin. By studying the literature of the subject and conduct

    interviews with employees at Skanska Construction, the understanding of the issue

    and knowledge will be increased.

    Literature studies, interviews together with production and design have been the

    basis for a successful study. The work has resulted in three types of approved form

    constructions to Skanska Construction and the drawings can be used of employees at

    the company. The form constructions are, by using a CAD-program, presented on

    drawings in a clear and convenient way.

    Geotechnical design is important to ensure good stability and bearing capacity of the

    ground. A part of this is to make good forecasts of future settlements. Nowadays

    most calculations are made in computer programs, such as Novapoint Geosuite

    Settlement. Geosuite Settlement includes a variety of calculation models, where some

    of the models include an addition of creep behaviour.

    The main purpose of this diploma work is to compare the results from different

    geotechnical settlement calculation models in Geosuite Settlement. As a reference

    object, an undrained test bank on clay in Lilla Mellösa outside of the community

    Upplands Väsby was selected. On this test site, the Swedish Geotechnical Institute

    (SGI) has performed measurements of long-term settlements since 1947.

    The result of this diploma work shows that the calculation models containing creep

    give result more like the measured settlements, than the calculation models that do

    not include creep. Despite of this, the measured settlement is greater than the

    settlement in calculation models containing creep.

    The most remarkable in this work are high excess pore pressures when using models

    containing creep. These excess pore pressure, in the result of this work, also

    decreases very slowly in time.

    One conclusion of this diploma work, based on the obtained results of this study, in

    comparison with other studies, is to use a calculation model containing creep, if the

    conditions are similar to those at the test site Lilla Mellösa.

    Composites based on natural cellulose fibres are susceptible to moisture. The fibres as well as the composite will inevitably soften and swell as moisture is absorbed. The intention of the present paper is to shed some light on the mechanisms behind softening and swelling. Also references to modelling work are made, to predict the moisture-induced dimensional stability. Characterisation techniques and models of such kind can be useful in choosing suitable fibres for improved moisture resistance, and identifying the main controlling parameters which affect the engineering consequences of moisture absorption. Understanding of the mechanisms and the main contributions to swelling can rationalise materials development. The examples shown in this review attempt to show the benefits by experimental mechanics and modelling in development of moisture resistant cellulose composites.

    Abstract [en]

    Composites with cellulose reinforcements are steadily gaining increased use. The stress transfer ability between reinforcement and polymer matrix has a strong influence on mechanical properties like strength and fracture toughness. This work presents a method to assess the stress transfer ability between cellulose and polymer matrix from a model material with cellulose spheres embedded in a polymer matrix. Such a material show smaller variability compared with composites based on natural cellulose fibres, and is less cumbersome than single fibre tests with regard to interfacial characterization. Measured elastic moduli of particulate composites is compared with predicted values from a micromechanical model based on a composite sphere assembly in a self-consistent scheme with only a spring constant of an imperfect interface as fitting parameter expressed in Pa/m. This interface parameter is identified through inverse modelling and used to quantify stress-transfer ability of cellulose/polylactide and cellulose/polystyrene composite interfaces. A higher degree of interfacial interaction was found for the former. This ranking was corroborated by adhesive force measurements using a micrometre sized cellulose sphere attached to the end of a cantilever in an atomic force microscope. With the model microstructure of a cellulose-sphere composite, an interfacial efficiency parameter can be backed out from stiffness measurements to be used in e.g. ranking of different fibre surface treatments and choice of matrix in the development of stronger natural-fibre composites.

    Polymer physics in nanoscale cutting: Opportunities for improved control in nano-manufacturing?2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Nano-scale manufacturing imposes demands on prediction of cutting processes on small scales. Specifically for applications that include optical functions, means to control the process parameter to produce high quality and damage-free surfaces are of importance. Control through empirical testing may be time-consuming and costly. Predictive modelling schemes based on the underlying physical mechanisms could potentially be more generally applicable in manufacturing. The understanding of polymer physics and mechanics on sub-micrometre scale is emerging, and slowly but increasingly transferred from a fundamental research field to useful engineering applications. Nanoscale cutting of metals has been studied more and is better understood than that of polymers. For polymers, there are generally more complex interactions between deformation rates, temperature change and material transitions. These effects need to be included in physical models describing the cutting processes in polymers. Furthermore, the mechanical behaviour of polymers may be quite different on the nanoscale compared with macroscale. The material properties are frequently known to be size-dependent. This calls for development of experimental methods to characterize the material properties on the nanoscale, to be used in predictive modelling.

    In this work, we have used an ultramicrotome, normally intended for preparation of ultrathin samples for transmission electron microscopy, instrumented with piezoelectric transducers to measure the cutting forces on sections down to about 50 nm thickness of thermoplastic PMMA. With this equipment, it was possible to investigate the effects of cutting speed and cutting thickness on the formation of surface damage in a well-controlled and reproducible manner. Using atomic force microscopy, the surface damage was identified as shear yield bands triggered by adiabatic heating. A suitable physical model including these observed phenomena made it possible to link the processing conditions with the onset of damage formation, i.e. the transition between a high-quality transparent surface and a damaged uneven surface. A finite element model was developed to predict the formation of the undesired shear bands. From an engineering perspective, such an approach could be potentially useful in improved manufacturing control. The present example supports the idea that material mechanics can be integrated in nanoscale manufacturing. In the future, it is not unlikely that instrumented nanomachining will provide on-line feedback through physical predictive models to adjust the processing parameters (forces, speed, etc.) to maintain a sufficiently high product quality at the highest production rate.

    Mixed numerical-experimental methods are increasingly used in various disciplines in materials science, recently also in wood micromechanics. Having a relatively irregular microstructure, direct interpretation of mechanical tests is not always possible since structurally specific properties are quantified rather than general material properties. The advent of combined numerical-experimental methods unlocks possibilities for a more accurate experimental characterization. A number of examples of mixed methods pertaining to both emerging experimental techniques and physical phenomena are presented: nano-indentation, moisture transport, digital-image correlation, dimensional instability and fracture of wood-based materials. Successful examples from other classes of materials are also presented, in an attempt to provide some ideas potentially useful in wood mechanics. Some general pit-falls in parameter estimation from experimental results are also outlined.

    Plant fibres are known to show a large variability in stiffness, which makes it time-consuming to experimentally characterize this property by conventional tensile testing. In this work, an alternative method is used, where the average fibre stiffness is back-calculated from compaction tests of in-plane randomly oriented fibre mats. The model by Toll is used to relate the load-displacement curve from the test to the Young modulus of the fibre, taking into account the natural variability in fibre cross section. Several tests have been performed on hemp fibre mats and compared with results from single-fibre tensile testing. The average back-calculated Young's modulus of the fibres was 45 GPa, whereas the average value from tensile testing ranged from 30 to 60 GPa. The straightforward compaction test can be useful in ranking of fibre stiffness, provided that the mat is composed of well-separated fibres and not of twisted yarns.

    In this paper, a method to derive rainfall thresholds based on the relationship between daily and the antecedent rainfall up to 6 days prior to landslide occurrence is proposed for the analysis of 134 landslide days in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, during the years 1980-2005. Based on a simple graphical procedure, rainfall frequency contour lines have been drawn in the daily versus antecedent rainfall plots to connect rainfall combinations relatively having the same frequency of occurrence. A two-bound threshold has been established: Below the lower bound, rainfall events are so frequent that any landslide day may only occur due to a significant anthropogenic disturbance, while, above the upper bound, rainfall alone is capable of inducing landslide days. Contour lines originating at the same daily rainfall value in all plots were then grouped together to form a threshold set, for which the number of well-predicted landslide days and false alarms was determined. It has been determined that 16 and 84 landslide days have fallen below the lower bound and above the upper bound, respectively. In addition, this method has been proven effective in the distinction between days with and without landslides, since it has led to a 23 % reduction in the number of false alarms per well-predicted landslide day when compared to a previously established threshold line for Tegucigalpa.

    Abstract [en]

    The scarcity of data poses a challenging obstacle for the study of natural disasters, especially in developing countries where the social vulnerability plays as important a role as the physical vulnerability.  The work presented in this thesis is oriented towards the demonstration of the usefulness of press archives as a data source for the temporal and spatial analysis of landslides in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for the period between 1980 and 2005.  In the last four decades, Tegucigalpa has been characterized by a disorganized urban growth that has significantly contributed to the destabilization of the city’s slopes.  In the first part of the thesis, a description of the database compilation procedure is provided.  The limitations of using data derived from press archives have also been addressed to indicate how these affect the subsequent landslide analyses.  In the second part, the temporal richness offered by press archives has allowed the establishment of rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrence.  Through the use of the critical rainfall intensity method, the analysis of rainfall thresholds for 7, 15, 30 and 60 antecedent days shows that the number of yielded false alarms increases with the threshold duration.  A new method based on the rainfall frequency contour lines was proposed to improve the distinction between days with and without landslides.  This method also offers the possibility to identify the landslides that may only occur with a major contribution of anthropogenic disturbances as well as those landslides induced by high-magnitude rainfall events.  In the third part, the matrix method has been employed to construct two landslide susceptibility maps: one based on the multi-temporal press-based landslide inventory and a second one based on the landslide inventory derived from an aerial photograph interpretation carried out in 2014.  Despite the low spatial accuracy provided by the press archives in locating the landslides, both maps exhibit 69% of consistency in the susceptibility classes and a good agreement in the areas with the highest propensity to landslides.  Finally, the integration of these studies with major actions required to improve the process of landslide data collection is proposed to prepare Tegucigalpa for future landslides.

During the rainy season, damages to infrastructure as well as injuries, casualties and homeless individuals resulting from landslides are reported in the press. This paper presents the development of a database for rainfall-induced landslides for the period 1980–2005, based on the news reported by two local newspapers. The editions comprehended during the study period have been scrutinized, and articles focusing on landslides, tropical storms, hurricanes, floods and vulnerability of the city have been collected. The interpretation of these archives has allowed the compilation of valuable data of approximately 400 landslides. The analyses of monthly and annual precipitation during the study period show how extreme rainfall events like Hurricane Mitch in October of 1998 have significantly contributed to the initiation of landslides. In addition, the assessment of the slums and neighborhoods affected by landslides during the study period reveals an evident link between the social and physical vulnerability of Tegucigalpa. In order to estimate the reliability of this press-based database, the set of landslides that have been reported as a result of Hurricane Mitch in the press archives has been compared with two inventories based on the interpretation of aerial photographs taken in 1999 and 2001. It is shown that the analysis of the landslide damage left after the hurricane can be enriched with the detailed temporal data provided in the archives and the precise location of these events determined by the aerial photographs. Despite the difficulties faced in the compilation of this database, a good comprehension of the temporal and spatial distribution of landslides in Tegucigalpa has been achieved.

    For a long time, the construction industry has lagged behind in the field of digitalization. It is about time for the industry to find new tools to be able to deliver a higher standard of quality assurance. This report is concerned with the application BIM 360 Field, which is a cloud based IT-tool and can be used by anyone on the construction site. The application has multiple areas of usage, including deviation handling, self-monitoring, QR-code, inspection and completion plans.The purpose of the study is to examine how effective BIM 360 Field is compared to the industry’s traditional way of handling deviations. This degree project is written in cooperation with Skanska Sverige AB and the project “J-huset” in Uppsala. The purpose is further to examine if BIM 360 Field can be applied and used for the inspection of “J-huset”.The study has been carried out through interviews with the production management on various projects. Interviews, as well as an introduction to the application, have been carried out with proficient staff from Skanska. A field study has been undertaken on the “J-huset” in Uppsala for the purpose of gaining a personal opinion as well as knowledge of the application.The result gained from the study is that BIM 360 Field has great potential for saving time during the construction process. From the interviews with production management, who used BIM 360 Field during production, some issues have been identified with the application.The conclusion in this study is that the BIM 360 Field is applicable to the “J-Huset” in Uppsala. The program is user friendly and has great potential to streamline work on quality assurance in production. In order to achieve a successful result, it is recommended to use the program at an early stage and throughout the production

    Abstract [en]

    A method for determining residual stresses through nanoindentation has been used in order to evaluate the local residual stress in a PVD Ti0.5Al0.5N coating. The influence of residual stress on the measured hardness is obtained by comparing the hardness of as deposited, residually stressed, coating and stress relieved pillars made in the very same coating. The technique offers high lateral resolution, and it can be applied on complex geometries where conventional stress measurements fall short. In this work, the method proved useful for estimating the residual stress at such a complex geometry as a sharp cutting edge. Edges with two different radii were analysed and it was concluded that the nominal residual compressive stress given to a coating can locally, on the very cutting edge, become significantly reduced by elastic relaxation .This effects the cohesion of the coating at that position which, together with the lift-off stress generated at the edge, make the coating in that region especially vulnerable to damage. The experimental results correlated very well with finite element simulations of the residual stress state around cutting edges with the same geometries.

    Fall accidents are a big problem in the construction industry today and stand forapproximately 23% of all accidents. Skanska is a construction company that has avision toachieve zero accidents. Eliminating fall accidents is one step on the way towards theirvision. The state of Skanskas fall safety has been analyzed in this thesis to show whichimprovements are possible in fall safety.A literature study has been performed in which Arbetsmiljöverkets (The Swedishwork environment authority’s) laws and rules, together with Skanskas own rules havebeen studied. The conclusion of the literature study is that Skanskas own rules wouldbe sufficient to meet the goal. If those rules were followed then all the lawrequirements would be fulfilled with good margin, and good fall safety would beachieved.Construction site visits have been made, participation to safety rounds undertaken,and safety round protocols collected in order to analyze the state of Skanskas siteswhen it comes to fall safety. The results showed that Skanskas construction siteskeep a very high standard when it comes to fall safety, but there are improvementsthat could be made regarding the general order on the sites, and also by properlymarking the covering of holes.Interviews with site managers, production leaders, safety representatives, Skanskasconstruction workers, subcontractor supervisors, a health and safety engineer and ahealth and safety manager from Skanska England were undertaken in order to get anidea about what flaws might exist today within fall safety, and what can be done toimprove the fall safety.The results from these interviews showed that improvements on how people usepersonal fall safety equipment must be done, and that the major cause that so manyfall accidents occur is a lack in safety behavior by the construction workers. Increasedsafety awareness and changes in personal behavior are required to reach the vision ofzero workplace accidents.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is written for the construction company NCC and Uppsala University, with the goal to investigate if there is a simple method to compare building materials from the perspective of sustainability, to help the decision-making when choosing materials for building Projects.

    To test the method four facade systems (brick, ventilated plaster, unventilated plaster and cement board) have been analyzed with different tools used for sustainable assessement, namely: Life-cycle cost analysis, Life-cycle analysis and assessment criteria. To make a final assessment of the four facade systems and combine the results of the above mentioned tools, a multiple-criteria decision analysis was used. The result from the final assessment show that unventilated plaster facade is the most sustainable option, when analyzed from an assumed lifespan of 50 years. The results, however, are seen as questionable due to the fact that the criteriums and their weight to the final results are based on this report's author's estimation and may not represent an objective truth. Due to the lack of available data, many assumptions were required when utilizing the tools, which further diminished the credibility of the results. The conclusion is that there is no simple method to compare the sustainability of building materials that captures the entire spectrum of what sustainability consists of. Instead of trying to find a new method, the already established enviromental certificates should be used and further developed.

    Abstract [en]

    A large number of electrical insulation components are produced in paper-based materials. Paper combines good insulating properties with the necessary mechanical and chemical stability. Paper consists of a system of fibers binding to each other creating a strong network. The presence of large open pores allows for impregnability of the material but also causes mechanical weakness in particular in the out-of-plane direction of the material. This aspect is important for pressboard components, where the resistance to compression stress is relevant for e.g. transformer windings. It is therefore relevant to understand the mechanisms that underlay the out-of-plane deformation of pressboard. In order to get a clear picture of the deformation patterns within the material, X-ray micro-computed tomography was used. Pressboard test pieces were subjected to in-situ out-of-plane compressive loading. 3D images of the sample could be captured before, during and after the loading sequence. Image analysis allowed for the definition of strain fields. The results revealed a strong correlation between the density variation within the sample and the strain calculated from the 3D images.

    collaboration called ”NCC project studio” that they use in some projects today.

    My thesis consists in bringing forth the most important aspects of the collaboration

    form called NCC project studio. The point of this is to use my thesis to help the

    company develop a quality document that can assist them when starting collaboration

    based on NCC project studio in the future.

    The conclusion of my thesis was that much of the focus needs to be on explaining to

    the participants what NCC is aiming to gain from working with the NCC project

    studio and also which important parts that needs to be worked on.

    Ask any constructional worker and there is a high probability that this person knows a colleague with pain or other disorders caused by working with power tools.

    According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority 71 percent of the Swedish constructional workers is exposed to vibrations at least 25 percent of the working hours. Despite this, the number of reported occupational sicknesses caused by vibrations is as low as 1, 4 percent.

    JM Ltd. is one of the largest constructional companies in Sweden. Their main business is new housing and development of residential areas. God quality and low impact on the environment is a part of great importance in the company’s long-term goals. To achieve this, and to ensure an effective production, the activities have gradually been organized according to Lean production. In the year of 2010 the producing part of the company began to use methods originating from Lean such as process orientation and standardization of work procedures. JM calls this Structured production.

    The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how working according to Lean when producing apartment buildings interacts with a safe working environment. The goal is to investigate and identify problematic operations during the assembly of semi-prefabricated, non-bearing walls so-called perimeter walls.

    The method used is a time study conducted in spring of 2014 on construction sites in Stockholm. The exposure to vibrations from power tools on construction workers, when working according to the installation instructions applicable at JM’s building projects was examined.

    The study revealed that the action value determined by the Swedish Work Environment Authority was exceeded when installing perimeter walls according to the installation instructions.

    The conclusion is to extend measurements and medical surveillance of exposed operations and personnel. A package of equipment and materials to be used when installing perimeter walls is presented along with possible methodological improvements of the installation instructions.

    In order to create a complete BIM-model of a whole project, it is common thatseveral programs and software-suites are used. It is beneficial if the models producedin these programs are compatible with each other, in order to improve theeffectiveness of the construction process as a whole. If a model created in oneprogram has to be altered in order to be compatible with another the result is excesswork.Designers, utilizing Civil 3D, more often than not have to alter constructions whichare to be part of a surface-model. This creates a situation where the construction hasto be modelled twice as Civil 3D cannot use the original model. The purpose of thisessay is to research the problems pertaining to surface creation in Civil 3D and theconsequences they have for designers.To better understand the process of surface creation of an object containing verticalparts a practical study of the subject has been carried out in Civil 3D. A simpleconstruction was created in Revit and imported to Civil 3D as to create a surface ofthe highest parts of the construction.The methods used by designers working in Civil 3D were researched as a qualitativestudy by means of surveys and interviews. The result of the study makes it clear thatthe respondents are dependent on models from different fields involved in the sameproject. As the models do not automatically adapt to the software used by thedesigners in question a considerable amount of manual reconstruction of models areneeded. Fundamentally, the issue is two-fold. Firstly, designers depend upon 3Dmodels and objects created by others. Secondly, Civil 3D cannot render verticalsurfaces or overhangs while creating surfaces. Knowledge about the way Civil 3Dworks and utilizing methods avoiding future problems before they occur has thepotential to improve workflow. Sufficient communication between parties involvedalso results in a more effective process.

    This technical report contains a study of the construction industries work regarding landfill waste. More specifically Sweden’s and the company Skanska’s development to prevent landfill and fulfill an ecofriendly society. The construction companies in Sweden are accountable for over a third of the country’s total waste and are prioritized to improve their statistics. Skanska have a goal to reach zero percent landfill waste, therefor should all the construction material be able to reuse or recycle.

    The purpose of this study is to find the causes and background of the landfill waste and to identify the factors of success. The goal is to give recommendations to Skanska on how they progressively can phase out landfill waste.

    The content of the report is built from a background part where the general challenge and goals is explained. Thereafter are the methods for information acquisition, interview study and literature study explained along with some typical landfill material and how it can be reused or recycled. A few projects are listed under chapter four to give the reader an understanding for what the authors have been looking at. Lastly the report will take the reader through the study’s results, discussion and recommendations.

    The results show that some recycling methods are available for the fractions which usually ends up as landfill. But the requirements for recycling and reuse are often too hard to fulfill in the construction industries. The interviews show that a high commitment is necessary for a highly qualified work with the landfill waste.

    Future projects are recommended to early on identify material that easily becomes landfill and avoid them as much as possible. Use smaller bins where there is less space and work continently with waste plans.

    Abstract [en]

    As cities are densified and as the housing shortage iscontinuously high, the need to utilize height in new constructionsincreases, and with it, also the need to quickly make preliminaryassessments when designing structural components in higherbuildings. The question of whether calculations made using handmethods and calculations made using computerized methods yieldsresults of the same order of magnitude, when analyzing structures,is therefore of interest.

    The question investigated in this work is whether calculationsmade by hand and calculations made with FEM-design 3D Structure,with respect to stresses in a single structural component, yieldresults of the same order of magnitude. A 16 storey building withconcrete walls and floors was the basis for the calculations. Thecalculations were made for two load cases for both handcalculations and calculations made with FEM-design 3D Structure;one case where vertical forces are considered to have a beneficialeffect on the stability of the building and one case wherevertical forces are considered to have an adverse effect on thestability of the building.

    The survey shows that there are major differences in resultsbetween the two methods for each load case respectively. Theexplanation for this is believed to depend upon thecharacteristics of the two calculation methods.

    The recommendation given in this essay is that hand calculationsshould be used when the accuracy is of less important for theapplication of the results, when there is no access tocomputerized calculation programs, or when the time required tomake more accurate calculations is limited. FEM design 3DStructure 16 should be used when accuracy is of greater importanceand complexity is high.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the Swedish detailed planning process from a time and money perspective, and also points out the deficiencies of the process. The detailed planning process currently receives much criticism from both the society and the industry. It is usually considered as a brake in the production of new housing in Sweden.

    A few of the municipalities’ administration time in the planning process in Stockholm was compared and analyzed and it was concluded that the average process takes between 30-60 months. However if a zoning plan is appealed the process extends usually between 4 to 12 months. In Stockholm County, a fourth of all the zoning plans are appealed, but only 1.3% of these leads to repealing of the plan. This number questions to some extent the democracy in today’s society, how many of the citizens’ complaints are actually accepted since that number also include complaints from authorities like the county administrative board.

    To obtain an understanding of the developer’s cost of the planning process a couple of housing projects in the municipality of Stockholm and Solna were examined. The investigation revealed that the cost may vary anywhere between 650,000 up to 6.5 million SEK. The cost of the zoning plan proved to be highly correlated with the time spent.

    The recommendation from our side is to increase the exchange of information between all parties, including the party concerned, leading to benefits of the process as a whole. Less public opposition leads to a smoother process, while increasing the cooperation between the municipality and the developer do as well.

    This thesis considers the integration of BIM and IoT in the building process of offices. The thesis is hopefully going to create knowledge about BIM and IoT and describe what needs to be done to carry out an integration.The planning of offices today consists of the use of BIM and a lot of smart solutions. But what are the benefits from an integration of BIM and Internet of Things and how can this be used throughout the building process? New and smart solutions are invented all the time and although not all are possible to use in everyday offices, some can already be of great use. For the future there is a great need for smart and sustainable solutions that helps to conserve energy but at the same time are economically sustainable. This needs to become a part of our everyday to help conquer one of our times biggest challenges, the environmental issue.

    This thesis highlights the advantages, disadvantages and requirements of an integration of BIM and IoT. It concerns the technology behind IoT and what the future has to offer.The result of the written thesis is a model that describes how an integration of BIM and IoT can be carried out during the different stages of the building process. The model is going to work like a cycle where information from sensors constantly flows to the BIM model during the entire building process. Information and experiences gained from the different stages of the building process can be used

    to evaluate the construction and its different systems and the experience gained is used in the next project.An integration will be hard to do on a big scale due to different factors. The technology is here but the pathway and standards for it are not.

    Stockholm Royal Seaport is one of Europe´s largest urban development projects. The city of Stockholm has ambitious environmental goals and a vision for Stockholm Royal Seaport to develop into a world-class environmental urban district. In order to achieve the aspiring goals, requirements are set in the agreement with property developers with land allocation. The city of Stockholm offers a capacity development programme to assure fulfilling of the requirements and simultaneously educate the property developers.

    The aim of this thesis is to examine how the requirements and capacity development programme in Norra 2, the third leg in the development of Stockholm Royal Seaport, has contributed to spreading knowledge among property developers. The thesis is limited to investigation energy requirements. With focus on the technical solutions used to obtain a low energy usage and what the developers will carry on to future projects.

    The analysis indicates that the capacity development programme has a positive effect on the developers´s collaboration to achieve more sustainable buildings. Strict verifying of the requirements has been a contributing factor to the positive results in Stockholm Royal Seaport. Several technical solutions are incorporated in the buildings in order to meet the requirements of energy savings. This leads to advanced systems that are difficult to manage and has beeenan issue fort the developers. Another issue is ambiguous and contradictory requirements that according to the developers has taken a consideralble amount of time and resources to fulfil. Setting requirements is important in developing more sustainable buildings. If demans are not made a lot of companies will chose the cheap and simple way to maximize profits. Continuing setting requirements and having a dialouge between stakeholders in an eraly stage is essential for a continuing sustainable development.

    Abstract [en]

    This study investigated the morphology, electrochemical modification with respect to the wood fiber direction, and mechanical properties of wood modified by in situ polymerization with polyaniline (PANI). This polymerization formed a composite material with applications as an anti-static, electromagnetic, anti-corrosion, and heavy metal purifying materials. The polymer was found throughout the entire structure of the wood and was quantified within the wood cell wall and middle lamella by SEM-EDX. The presence of PANI affected the conductivity of the composite specimens, which was found to be higher in the fiber direction, indicating a more intact percolation pathway of connected PANI particles in this direction. The PANI modification resulted in a small reduction of the storage modulus, the maximum strength, and the ductility of the wood, with decreases in the properties of specimens conditioned in an environment above 66% relative humidity. The in situ-polymerized PANI strongly interacted with the lignin component of the veneers, according to the decrease in the lignin glass transition temperature (Tg) noted in DMA studies.

    Towards determination of local and overall displacements of the Vasa ship structure: Effect of its mechanical connections2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    The warship Vasa from the 17th century must be preserved for the future generations. There are many concerns currently being addressed by ongoing research efforts. The support structure is one of them, which needs to be re-designed. In order to do this, the local and overall deformation of the Ship’s structure must be identified. The earlier impregnation of PEG on the Vasa material is causing the material to creep significantly more than oak without PEG, resulting in an increasing deformation of the ship. In addition to this, the effect of the mechanical connections of the ship needs to be considered. Experimental tests were performed on a 1:1 scale replica of a representative section of the Vasa ship. Different load cases were applied in order to represent the current situation of the vessel’s connections. Linear displacement gauges as well as non-contacting image correlation systems were used as measurement methods to analyze the behaviour of the test sample. A validated computer model, using finite element method (FEM) simulations, with Vasa-material properties will be used to calculate the stiffness coefficients, which will be included in a simplified full-computer model of the entire vessel. Based on the latter, the overall and local displacements will be obtained. This is a necessary input in a full numerical model of the ship to optimize a new support structure.

    This report aims to study how the indoor climate in a conference room can be improved by the use of phase change material (PCM). The study includes an experiment where 40 kg of salt hydrate based PCM was placed within a conference room located in an office in the city of Uppsala, Sweden. The experiment resulted in a decrease in the peak temperature with respect to the internal heat gains in the conference room and a slower temperature increase with PCM implemented. The report concludes that PCM can improve the indoor climate in regard to its ability to limit the temperature fluctuation.

    The study also contains modelling and simulation over the office and conference room in the program Trnsys. This was carried out to study how the temperature and cooling demand in the conference room and office respectively would change with a larger implementation of PCM. When 106 kg of PCM was simulated to be implemented in two of the conference room walls, the specific peak temperature was on average decreased with 0.17 °C/kW during the year. Furthermore, a decrease in the cooling demand with 16 % was achieved when implementing 1 208 kg of PCM in the internal walls of the office. This study shows that there is potential for reducing the cooling demand in the building through an implementation of PCM. Further studies with a more detailed model of the office is recommended before deciding upon if and where PCM should be implemented.

    The Finite Element Method (FEM) is a technique for finding the approximate solution

    of differential equations. It is commonly used in structural analysis to evaluate the

    deformation and internal stresses of a structure that is subject to outer loads. This

    thesis investigates the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) workflow that is used at Andritz

    Hydro AB, with the objective to find solutions that make the workflow more time

    effective. The current workflow utilises Siemens NX and Salomé for pre- and

    post-processing, and Code Aster as the FEM solver. Two different approaches that

    improve the workflow are presented. The first suggest that the entire FEA workflow

    is migrated to NX using the built-in FEM package of NX called Advanced Simulation.

    The second approach utilises the Salomé API (Application Programming Interface) to

    create a customised toolbox (a script containing several functions) that automate

    several repetitive and cumbersome steps of the workflow, therefore effectively

    reducing the time that is required by the analyst to perform FEA. Due to the positive

    results and ease-of-use, the Salomé toolbox is preferred over the license cost and

    steep learning curve that is related to NX and Advanced Simulation.

    An optimization strategy for a hollow flywheel energy storage is presented. Several press-fitted shells of anisotropic materials (such as carbon composites) are studied by an analytical model based on a plane stress assumption. The optimization target is stored energy. The optimizer constraints (which were evaluated at full and zero charge level, respectively) were based on strain-based models for fatigue life of composites, and stress-based fatigue life models for high-strength aluminum. A compiled library was built within the scope of this work, and used to run a robust global grid-search optimizing method. The analytical model was compared against a finite element method solution, and the (single-core) library was seen to be at least 5 orders of magnitude faster.

    To understand how the energy requirements of the mechanical pulping process can be reduced, the fundamental mechanisms behind fiber separation in Norway spruce were studied experimentally and analytically. Single tip scratching in heated water was used to reproduce initial defibration mechanisms found industrially. The resulting scratches were then compared with surfaces ground in a real industrial process. Moreover, the mechanical behavior of the wood microstructure was monitored with X-ray computed microtomography as a single hard tip was pressed into it. Subsequent digital image correlation was applied to estimate the strain field in the region around the indenting tip. Regions in the wood with high tensile or shear strains were identified, i.e. where cracking and fiber separation is believed to initiate.

    This thesis has evaluated environmental classifications of projects and the lessons learned to explore what the possible ramifications of implementing this in the construction and infrastructure are. Companies today are looking to develop methods to demonstrate their environmental commitments, but there is an uncertainty regarding the contribution of environmental classifications in this aspect.

    The literature review presents the theory of environmental classification, which provides a general knowledge of its function. The empirical data is based on an analysis of existing classification methods and qualitative interviews. The analysis shows specific environmental classification system for the area of construction and infrastructure. CEEQUAL is currently the only environmental classification applicable to Swedish projects and therefore serves as the basis for the continued analysis. The interviews focus on the experience and perceptions of the completed and on-going CEEQUAL project and their benefits.

    The analysis shows that active work on environmental issues relates to different areas and varies between a wide range of different aspects of construction and infrastructure projects. Environmental classification itself focuses on the planning and execution phase of the project and it evaluates the project’s environmental sustainability. By scoring categories of environmental commitments through documents, photos or other documentation, points are summarized to form the basis for a final grade. This final grade provides a certificate and can be used to demonstrate the project's environmental and sustainability level. Assuming that time and finances available, the system provides support for the completion of environmental projects.

    The conclusion shows that the prime attribute of environmental classification is the framework for environmental work it provides within a project. The analysis shows that there is a restriction in the system's current configuration. The original purpose of environmental classification, to promote respect for the environment, has been eclipsed by its strength as a marketing tool.

    Objektet för undersökningen är en samverkansbro i Gallsbo, Borlänge som projekterats av konsultföretaget Tyréns i Uppsala. Tyréns valde att dimensionera en 1100 mm hög balk som senare kort efter dimensionerades om till 1300 mm, på förfrågan från Trafikverket för att minska materialkostnaden och miljöpåverkan.
