I Reconquistans anda: En kritisk diskursanalys av VOX2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

VOX developed out of the largest right-wing party, Partido Popular, and has since the announcement of their candidature 2013, acquired an increasingly stable support from the voters. Since the election 2018 they became the third biggest party in Spain. One of the core elements of VOX´s political discourse is the term Reconquista. Essentially this term is a historic religious term denoting the successive elimination of Muslim occupied area on the Iberian Peninsula and have through the Spanish history constituted a part of the Spanish identity and still do. This is the subject that I address in this paper, using a critical discourse analysis, I´ve examined how VOX interpret and use the term Reconquista on social media. The material used for this paper is constituted of three Instagram posts and three Youtube videos.

The results show that VOX interpret the term Reconquista as a source for the “true” Spanish identity. The analysis identified three themes that constitutes VOXS´s interpretation of the Reconquista, namely, the significance of places in the material, two contrasting world concepts, and lastly, War.  Through this interpretation VOX uses the term Reconquista as scale to construct a subjective “we” and “them” scenario. The term Reconquista is also used as a yardstick to measure how Spanish an entity is.

A Jihad on Love: A study on the phenomenon of love jihad in relation to Hindu nationalist constructs of identities in India2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to investigate the Indian Hindu nationalist concept of “love jihad”, an idea based upon the alleged fact that Muslim men actively seeks out non-Muslim women for conversion to Islam by various methods including, false promises of love and abductions. While the accusation that Muslims are conducting love jihad currently is being propagated by several active Hindu nationalist groups, the focus of this paper lies on the Viśva Hindū Pariṣad (VHP) and the Rāṣṭrīya Svayaṃsevak Saṃgh (RSS), two major branches within the so-called family of Hindu nationalist organisations, or the Saṃgh Parivār. The material primarily con-sists of articles pertaining to love jihad, published in each organisation’s mouthpiece magazines. Utilising theories on Indian nationalism placed within a structure of analysing propaganda, based on the propaganda model of Garth S. Jowett and Victoria O'Donnell, this paper investigates the idea of love jihad in relation to the VHP and RSS constructs of Indian identities.

Buddhismens Beskyddare: Burmesisk nationalism, antimuslimska munkar och deras amerikanska sympatisörer2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The violent uprisings in Myanmar between 2012-2014 sparked a big interest in the media around the world. The uprisings which resulted in many casualties and the destruction of muslim owned shops and mosques left around 140.000 IDPs. In an interview with Time Magazine’s Hannah Beech, the leader of the group claimed to be responsible for instigating the violence, Ashin Wirathu likened muslims to animals and encouraged burmese buddhists to shun muslims. Since the article was released an independent american organization which sympathizes with Wirathu and his ‘golden burmese’ 969 movement created a web page dedicated to portray a nuanced image of the movement and to clear up what they have claimed to be a number of false reports propagated by western media. This essay investigates the american support movement by analysing their english web page through the method of content analysis and by applying a propaganda theoretical framework to the final discussion. The aim of the essay is to identify what kind of image of Buddhism and Ashin Wirathus 969 movement the support group wants to portray and to explain this in the context of Myanmars colonial and postcolonial history.

Catholics and The Surgeon's Stories: A historical novel as a producer of religion within the private sphere.2022Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Often, novels provide insights into life's private spheres which are otherwise inaccessible. In this paper, I will study the historical novel The Surgeon's stories, first published in 1851, as a producer of religious ideals in the private sphere. By examining some of the Catholic characters in Topelius' story and how they relate to the private sphere and how the tensions between public and private entangle them, I will examine how the author depicts Finland's Roman-Catholic past and the role of Catholicism in the Finnish national narrative. The Surgeon’s stories have been read by generations of readers in both Finland and Sweden. By creating a national past with religious ideals for 19th century Finland, the author Topelius shapes the image of the past. In the novel, Catholicism is gendered and depicted as primarily private. As Topelius creates a private sphere for certain religious denominations, he discusses both the place of religion in society and the role of religion in the narrative of the Finnish nation at large. Throughout The Surgeon's stories, romantic encounters, witch trials, and tales of dying men are all part of constructing the private sphere and religious ideals for the Finnish people. The paper presents my work with a thesis on Church History at Uppsala University.

Finnish soldiers and Jesuits in The Surgeon’s Stories by Zacharias Topelius – Religious ideals and counter-images shaping the image of the Thirty Years War2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Fiction has shaped the image of the past, especially the image of the 30 years' war. This presentation focuses on the Christian soldier during the early modern period as depicted in the historical novel The Surgeon’s Stories by the Finnish author Zacharias Topelius. The novel was published between 1853 and 1867 and has been read by generations of readers in both Finland and Sweden, thus, shaping the image of the common history between the two countries. The novel is set in the early modern period and begins on the battlefield of Breitenfeld in the year 1631 where the Finnish soldiers of the Swedish army fought the Catholic enemy, here mainly portrayed by Jesuits. My aim is to study religious ideals and counter images in the depiction of the 30 years war in the first part of The Surgeon’s Stories. I will take a closer look at what characterizes the Finnish soldiers and how they practice their faith. I will further study the Jesuits, who also are portrayed as Christian soldiers but as counter images to the Finnish ideal. Since The Surgeon’s Stories is the first novel to give a Finnish perspective on the 30 years war, I will discuss the use of history, nationalism, and religious ideals in the novel, and the role they play in shaping the image of the past.

Kristendom för en ny nation – Nytt ljus på Fältskärns berättelser av Zacharias Topelius.2022Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

Christianity and Morality for the Nordic Nation: – the Circulation of Knowledge in Times of Crisis2023Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

What should characterize the people of a nation? The answer to that question has varied in different historical contexts, but in the Nordic countries, the answer has often been sought within a Christian frame of reference, since Christianity has long been a part of nation-building and societal change in the Nordic countries. This is especially evident in times of crisis when the characteristics of the nation and its people have been negotiated and renegotiated. We argue that the study of the societal circulation of knowledge, especially religious knowledge, within the nation and between nations in times of crisis is crucial to the understanding of how religious ideals were implemented into grand national narratives and also images of ideal citizens. In this paper we want to acknowledge the role of Christianity in Nordic nation-building and the later development of the democratic welfare state by taking a closer look at three examples that highlight religion as a relevant factor in the formation of Finland and Sweden in the 19th and the 20th centuries: the Finnish author Zacharias Topelius and his nation-building, the promulgation of a new curriculum for Swedish primary schools during the interwar period and the second World War crisis for the Swedish nation in terms of threatened political independence, national identity and culture. We will examine how concepts of Christianity and morality circulated within and between Finland and Sweden during these different historical contexts that could be described as times of crisis.

Kön och bibeltolkning: En undersökning av hur Nya testamentets brevtexter om kvinnors underordning tolkats i bibelvetenskapliga kommentarer under 1900-talet2005Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I study how the New testament texts about women’s subordination have been interpreted in exegetical literature during the twentieth century. The New testament texts I refer to as the texts about women’s subordination are: 1 Cor. 11:2–16, 1 Cor. 14:33–40, Eph. 5:21–6:9, Col. 3:18–4:1, 1 Tim. 2:8–3:15, Tit. 2:1–10 and 1 Peter 2:11–3:9. The material I analyze is exegetical commentaries, but also other material that reflects the exegetical debate about the subordination texts. The material is both Swedish and international. The purpose of this study is threefold: First, to examine and analyze how the New testament texts about women’s subordination have been interpreted in exegetical literature during the last 60 years. Secondly, to discern whether women’s subordination function as a hermeneutical category in the interpretations of the texts. And thirdly, to – with the conclusions of the investigation pursued and my analytical tools and theoretical considerations as points of departure – discuss and propose criteria for interpretation of biblical texts.

With the term women’s subordination as a hermeneutical category I mean that women’s subordination can be viewed as a structure, or a motive, that influences the texts as well as the interpretation. This hermeneutical category functions in a way that women become “the Others” in texts and interpretations. To theoretically discuss the meaning of woman/women as “the Other/Others” I, for example, examine the work of Simone de Beauvoir. In the material I find patterns for interpretation. One of these patterns is that subordination is interpreted as an expression of love and a response to love. I propose four criteria for the critical exegetical work and one criterion for biblical interpretation in a broader sense. United Nations declaration of the Human Rights from 1948 and the convention on women from 1979, expresses the equal value and freedom of every human being – woman or man.

United Nations declaration of Human Rights may function as a criterion in biblical interpretation, a criterion that destabilize women’s subordination as a hermeneutical category and avoids the reproduction and production of androcentrism.

Examination into the True Teaching: Vidyānandin's Satyaśāsanaparīkṣā2020Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Being adherents of but one of the many religious and philosophical traditions that evolved on the Indian subcontinent, the Jains have necessarily had to find various ways in which to coexist and compete in the pluralistic Indian environment. Examination into the True Teaching by Jens W. Borgland focuses on one such way or strategy – namely that of philosophical debate and polemics – by translating and studying the Satyaśāsanaparīkṣā (“Examination into the true teaching”), a 10th century doxography written by Vidyānandin, one of the foremost Digambara Jain philosophers of the time.

The text, as it has come down to us, presents and refutes twelve Indian philosophical teachings or schools – the most important of which are Sautrāntika and Yogācāra Buddhism, Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika, Advaita Vedānta, Mīmāṃsā, Sāṃkhya and Cārvāka – with the aim of establishing the superior status of Jain philosophy as the one and only ‘true teaching.’ It thus offers us a window into the philosophical debates of the period from the perspective of a Digambara Jain philosopher.

    Abstract [en]

Mahādeva, the “Indian Oedipus”, is in some sources blamed for the initial schism between the two main branches of the early Buddhist sects, the Mahāsāṃghikas and the Sthaviras. In this paper I examine a version of the story of Mahādeva found in the Tibetan Dunhuang manuscript labelled iol Tib j 26, showing that it contains evidence supporting the hypothesis that this story reached Tibet through China. I further show that this Dunhuang manuscript contains an older version of the corresponding section in an early Tibetan history of Buddhism, Mkhas pa lde’u’s Rgya bod kyi chos ’byuṅ rgyas pa (“Extensive history of Buddhism in India and Tibet”).

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates one aspect of Buddhist monastic procedural law set forth in the aniyata (“undetermined”) section of the Prātimokṣa/Vibhaṅgas of the extant monastic law codes (vinaya). Here we find rules concerning how to handle cases in which a monk is accused by a trustworthy female lay follower (upāsikā) of having stayed alone in a secluded place with a woman. These rules have hitherto received comparatively little study, most of which has focused on the (Theravāda) Pāli vinaya. By examining the aniyata rules and their canonical commentaries in all six extant vinayas, I show that the treatment of these rules in the Pāli vinaya is not representative of Buddhist monastic law in general, and that the commonly held notion that any punitive legal action taken against a monk at the very least requires that he acknowledge the act, if not the offense with which he stands accused, is in need of revision. This paper further shows that there are significant differences between the Tibetan and Chinese translations of the Vibhaṅga of the Mūlasarvāstivāda vinaya (MSV), and so contributes to recent investigations into multiple MSV traditions. It also discusses some differences and similarities between the different vinayas, especially common elements between the Sarvāstivāda, Mūlasarvāstivāda and Mahāsāṃghika vinayas

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Jewish historian Hugo Valentin (1888-1963) founded the field of Swedish Jewish history in the 1920s. Valentin was also a prominent and public figure in Swedish Jewish affairs, as a writer, Zionist and refugee activist. This article focuses on Valentin's analysis of antisemitism, from the 1920s to the early 1950s. It pays equal attention to the continuity and change of his writings on the topic, analysed in relation to such political contexts as the Jewish question', Zionism and anti-Nazi responses, and advances within scholarly research on antisemitism. It shows that Valentin staked out a new approach to the topic of antisemitism, in which Jewish characteristics and the so-called Jewish question, while not completely absent, were placed within parentheses. Instead, he presented antisemitism and individual antisemites as problems in their own right, which, given Nazi German expansionism and the outbreak of the Second World War, seemed to be a greater and more urgent issue than whatever questions might have pertained to Jews and their place in modern society.

The change of collective identity? A content analysis of the texts in second King 22–23 and Ezra 9–10. With the use of modern theories on identity theory, ethnicity and sexuality, apart from content analysis, this paper aims to broaden our knowledge of these ancient texts. In this paper the case is made that what happens in Ezra, with the mixed marriages crises, could be understood according to differences in coping with identity crisis as shown by the two groups in the text, that is a style of Normative processing orientation versus a style of Normative processing orientation. Regarding Josia the case is made that what happens in the text could be understood from the point that the text is addressing different views on the formation and understanding of an early Israelite collective identity.

Does the Dude Abide by the Tao?: A comparative study of Dudeism and the Tao Te Ching.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Dudeism was inspired by a film released in 1998 named The Big Lebowski, which recounts the adventures of a character called the Dude, the namesake of the religion. The Dude is an example of the (mostly) ideal practitioner of Dudeism, which Dudeists mean has existed throughout the ages, expressed differently by different systems of belief and behaviour while retaining an essential Dudeistic spirit.

A superficial overlook of this system of belief and behaviour finds many similarities to early Taoism, a parallel which Dudeism itself encourages, particularly in regards to the Tao Te Ching. It is also clear that many of Dudeism’s central concepts are inspired or borrowed from said work.

This essay explores the relationship between Dudeism and Taoism through comparison, focusing on the teachings of Tao Te Ching in relation to Dudeist thought and practice. It seeks to establish Dudeism’s religious history as a religion firmly rooted in both a modern motion picture and ancient Eastern thought. The essay concludes that Dudeism has adapted the teachings of the Tao Te Ching for a modern, Western audience through the language and imagery of The Big Lebowski, adding its own twists to ancient concepts.

    Abstract [en]

A church in rural Vester Egede from the earliest Christian period in Denmark e.g. the early 1100, a baptismal font is found showing a woman breastfeeding two animals. She is said to be a typical early roman Luxuria, in mild appearance. However, what makes her unique is that she appears standing on the top of her head, her womb serving as font. The main question is how come that a baptismal font like this is to be found in a church, leading to the sub question, if this font really has a Christian origin or could it be rooted in Norse, pre-Christian tradition, alternatively is the font an expression of a syncretism between the two colliding cultures. Studying font in search of an answer I have addressed it from four perspectives: 1) could the very use of baptismal fonts be pre-Christian, 2) to what extend could the motif and 3) its interpretation be rooted in Norse tradition and finally 4) could the young church in Denmark have taken over a previous water ritual and turned it into the Christian baptism of children. The use of font, the motif, it´s interpretation and the ritual function has been investigated from two perspectives: e.g. from the Christian and the Norse religious angels. Methods used are the historical and iconographical method. The hermeneutic method is underlying as a fundament.

According to water rituals the Norse tradition had a very established water ritual for new born children that mostly or exclusively built on civil rights principals, with no outspoken religious contents. How the water ritual practically was performed is not known. Only vague traces suggest the use of a baptismal font in Norse tradition in Denmark. On the motif, the Luxuria, breastfeeding two snakes, it is well documented on the continent and its origin is recognized as the antique Terra Mater. The motif woman-snake is indeed found in Scandinavia, but at the same time no evidence is found of a Mother Earth breastfeeding snakes. There are vague signs that the motif might belong to an earlier layer of earthbound religion predating the Asir-religion. Besides the breastfeeding the Luxuria´s womb is serving as font. Using a Mortal Sinner´s womb for washing off the Original Sin does not give any substantial meaning in symbolic language. However there is a tradition in Denmark for using the epithet fovea or uterus for the baptismal font. On this specific baptismal font the only way to explain the use of the Luxuria´s womb as font is through considering a compilation of two separate traditions. Although the motif in a symbolic understanding of the all-nurturing and all-lifegiving Mother Earth provides a totally comprehendible meaning, it cannot be pleaded that the font is derived from Norse tradition.

Religion, Law, and Democracy: Selected Writings2020 (oppl. 1)Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This is the first representative edition in English of Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde’s writings on religion, law, and democracy. As a historian, legal scholar, and former judge on Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court, Böckenförde (1930–2019) has shaped legal and political discourse in twentieth-century Germany like few others. Doing so, he combined three normative orientations writings as a political liberal, as a social democrat, and as a Catholic. The included articles discuss the place of religion in modern democracy, the role of the Catholic Church in the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the Copernican revolution of Vatican II in embracing religious freedom and accepting the modern secular state, the history of the concept of freedom of conscience, the relation of religion and state in Hegel’s writings, democratic models of secularism, theological reflections on the character of secular law, models of political theology, the need for canon law reform, and bioethical issues, such as the regulation of abortion, genetic screening, and in vitro fertilization in light of the constitutional principle of human dignity. This is the second of two volumes, of which the first, published in 2017, brought together articles in constitutional and political theory. Beside fifteen articles, the volume contains excerpts of the biographical interview that historian and legal scholar Dieter Gosewinkel conducted with Böckenförde in 2009/2010. Introductions and annotations by the editors accompany the text throughout, providing background explanations on the context of German and European politics and history. A comprehensive list of Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde’s publications is included in an appendix.

Refugees or Returnees: European Jews, Palestinian Arabs and the Swedish Theological Institute in Jerusalem around 19482010Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this study five individuals who worked in Svenska Israelsmissionen and at the Swedish Theological Institute in Jerusalem are focused. These are Greta Andrén, deaconess in Svenska Israelsmissionen from 1934 and matron at the Swedish Theological Institute from 1946 to 1971, Birger Pernow, director of Svenska Israelsmissionen from 1930 to 1961, Harald Sahlin director of the Swedish Theological Institute in 1947, Hans Kosmala director of the Swedish Theological Institute from 1951 to 1971, and finally H.S. Nyberg, Chair of the Swedish board of the Swedish Theological Institute from 1955 to 1974. The study uses theoretical perspectives from Hannah Arendt, Mahmood Mamdani and Rudolf Bultmann.

A common idea among Lutheran Christians in the first half of 20th century Sweden implied that Jews who left Europe for Palestine or Israel were not just seen as refugees or colonialists - but viewed as returnees, to the

Promised Land. The idea of peoples’ origins, and original home, is traced in European race thinking. This study is discussing how many of the studied individuals combined superstitious interpretations of history with apocalyptic interpretations of the Bible and a Romantic national ideal. Svenska Israelsmissionen and the Swedish Theological Institute participated in Svenska Israelhjälpen in 1952, which resulted in 75 Swedish houses sent to the State of Israel. These houses were built on land where until July 1948 the Palestinian Arab village Qastina was located.

The Jewish state was supported, but, the establishment of an Arab State in Palestine according to the UN decision of Nov 1947 was not essential for these Lutheran Christians in Sweden.  The analysis involves an effort to translate the religious language of the studied objects into a secular language.

Gegenständliche Poetiken des Haares2023Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [de]

    Abstract [en]

The ceremonial drum, with its drumhead filled with pictures and tightened over an oval or oviformed wooden frame or bowl, was the most important tool of the noaidi, the Sami shaman. By outsiders however, were they missionaries during the 17th century or researchers during 20th, the Sami drum has often been demonised as ‘devilish’ or belitted as ‘primitive’, and labelled ‘troll-drum’. Repudiating these opinions, the purpose of this dissertation is twofold: to give a critical assessment of what written sources and earlier research say about the Sami drums, and to analyse the functions and meanings of the drum in traditional Sami society as musical instrument, work of art, record of religion, and tool of divination.

The introduction and the first chapter present the historical context of religious confrontation during the 17th and 18th centuries, and the theoretical perspective of the investigation. The point of departure is to regard the drum not only as an object and a cultural artefact, but as a active participant in the communication between human beings and the world. In chapter 2, an overview of written information and scholarly discussions is given, from the earliest description of a Sami drum in a manuscript from the second half of the 12th century to the hypotheses about the drum pictures presented by researchers during the second half of the 20th century.

The third chapter deals with the construction of the drum, presents the different drum categories as well as the drumstick and the pointer, and summarizes the scanty information on the older sources about the ritual initiation of the drum, while chapter 4 discusses the drum in an ethnomusicologial perspective. In contrast to much earlier research, it argues in favour of the idea that the drums functioned as musical instruments, not only as sound tools.

The drum is analysed as an example of Sami iconography in chapter 5, which takes up themes like naturalism vs. abstraction, drum pictures and rock art, and drum pictures as art. Against the background of a discussion of the drum pictures, new interpretations of eight drums and five picture themes are suggested. Chapter 6 takes up the drums function as a tool of divination, accounts for tests on experimental drums, and discusses the origin and forms

    of Sami drum divination.

Chapter 7, finally, gives a summary of the findings and concludes by relating them to the role of the drum as a symbol of infinite value for Sami identity.

    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the complicated second strophe of the ON. poem . It stresses the fact that Snorri Sturluson is not only our source to the strophe but also himself an interpretor of it. This brings me back to an earlier suggestion that the -- from Snorri on -- supposed location Singasteinn could actually be an object, a possibility that leads me to propose a new linguistic interpretation. Finally, the sontent is put into a larger comparative myth complex which would suit the actors of the strophe, and also help us to a fuller understanding of its meaning.

    Abstract [en]

This paper gives a survey of the Germanic conception of a mountain into which the dead were thought to go in the afterlife. I start with investigating the Icelandic saga material, where the idea of the mountain of the dead is frequent. The study then takes the reader to continental Germanic speaking Europe in early Christian time. Here, elements such as the famous King Arthur and, eventually, emperors such as Charlemagne and Frederick II were added to the myth. Incorporated were also chiliastic notions of  the Last Days and the final return of the (salvational) emperor from within the mountain. Finally, the paper looks briefly at the modern reception of the myth in romantic and nationalistic Germany, and ends with the picture of Adolf Hitler shortly before the outbreak of World War II, looking out over Untersberg, the home of the slumbering Emperor Barbarossa, who was expected to return in the final days...

The present study will exemplify the relevance of a philological approach to the study of myth through a text-based examination of the role and function of the enigmatic god Heimdallr in a no less enigmatic source, the Eddic poem Hyndluljóð. Since this text is text imbued with genealogical content, the analysis will employ emic conceptual models concerning affnity and descent in order to shed light on its meaning. I shall first try to establish the status of Hyndluljóð as source material; next, provide an analysis of its main theme; and finally, turn to the question of Heimdallr’s role in the text

    Abstract [en]

The well-known Old Norse narrative about how the god Þórr fishes the “Serpent of Middle Earth” out of the depths of the waters was obviously widely spread in pre-Christian and early Christian times. The sources in which this narrative is preserved reach from Gosforth in the west to Altuna in the east and span over at least three centuries. The narrative therefore raises interesting questions about continuity, reception, adaptation, and interpretation. This article tries to address these questions through a survey of the forms of the narrative as preserved in the extant sources.
