    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Magdalena Rudenschöld (born 1766, died 1823) was a woman in Swedish history, who lived a turbulent life. As a young woman she was employed at the Swedish court and got to know the king of that time, Gustaf III, and she became the mistress of one of his closest deputies, Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt. After the killing of Gustaf III, a temporary government was formed. This was a regency that was put there on behalf of Prince Gustaf Adolf, since he was not yet of age to run the country. The commission to conduct this temporary government was given to Duke Carl, who was the dead king’s brother.

King Gustavus III’s former employees and Officers were after the king’s death, opposed by the temporary government, and they were moved to other assignations. Among these former employees and Officers a discontent arose and a few of them, among others Rudenschöld and her friend Armfelt, started to discuss and plan for a change in the governance of Sweden. The planning was mostly done through correspondence. Several of those who took part in this correspondence, was later sentenced for trying to overthrow the Swedish government. One of the sentenced people was Magdalena Rudenschöld.

The purpose of this treatise, has been to examine the role and actions of Magdalena Rudenschöld in the Armfelt conspiracy and also to compare the court records to the sentence she received. Rudenschöld was convicted of treason against the king and kingdom. The results show that Rudenschöld’s conviction for being part of treason against king and kingdom was correct, and that she had made no attempt to stop the conspiracy plans. On her part she had mediated letters between people and she had offered to help, for instance by travelling to Russia to speak for their cause. Rudenschöld’s penalty was hard. She was imprisoned for about two years, after having been publicly pilloried. As she was released from prison, Duke Carl provided her a property on the Swedish island Gotland, and she was not permitted to leave it for still some time. The fact that two members of the temporary government was part of the court that sentenced her, probably contributed to the harsh punishment. However, it has to be born in mind that this was how the judicature was organised at the time being.

The treatment of Rudenschöld upset the public at the time of the trials - a lady-in-waiting who were pilloried and ended up in prison was very unusual. The fact that the affair was given characteristics of romanticism as Rudenschöld’s intimacy with the married man Armfelt was made public, and that the affair is even more complicated since the conductor of the temporary government - Duke Carl - previously had been in love with Rudenschöld, makes this story linger for posterity.

Who you are and what they think about you: how to measure brand identity and brand image of a small design company2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The idea of this thesis originates from the stand point that the understanding of who you are, who you want to be and what impression you actually make, is the start of a successful reciprocal relationship. The thesis solves two tasks. First, it offers a methodology of measuring brand image and brand identity and therefore contributes to the development of the research base. Second, presenting a case-study of a small scale company it applies the methodology and analyzes the congruency between brand image and brand identity from the communication perspective of SMEs. In a result the developed methodology is tested and a contribution to the deeper understanding of brand nature is made.

Archaeological site significance: the connection between archaeology and oral history in Palau2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Oral history is an important component of Palauan heritage and living culture. Interaction of oral history and archaeology is regarded as a policy when conducting research in Palau, both within the Bureau of Arts and Culture, responsible for protection and preservation of cultural remains in Palau, and among researchers not representing BAC. Legally, a material remain is proven significance if it is connected with intangible resources, such as "lyrics, folklore and traditions associated with Palauan culture".

This paper examines and discusses the connection of oral history and archaeology, which will be presented through three case studies: the earthworks on Babeldaob, the traditional stonework village of Edangel in Ngardmau state, and the process of nominating a cultural remain for inclusion in the National Register for Historic Places. The nomination is a good reflection of the interaction between archaeology and oral history, where association with intangible resources is virtually necessary. The two specified types of archaeological remains are compared to one another regarding presence in oral traditions and significance for Palauans. Based on the information obtained from personal experience, interviews and literature, it can be concluded that an archaeological or historical site is valued more by its connection to oral history than to its archaeological qualities, which in turn effects how protection and preservation is administrated, financed, and carried out.

Between mission and market: the creation of fundraising propositions2009Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The voluntary sector is growing in importance; in fundraising turnover, number of players and marketing professionalism. This study explores the process by which the fundraising organisations define and develop their propositions to the market. Starting with an observation that organisations with very different history and tradition present themselves to the market in similar ways, it investigates how three leading Swedish organisations create the basis for their propositions to the market of donors, which in fundraising practice jargon is called the Case for Support. Drawing upon research in philanthropic giving and organisational identity, the author suggests a theoretical framework for such a fundraising Case for Support. It recognises two main sources of influence, an external market source driven by donors, consumer image and behavioural trends and an internal mission driven source, defined by organisational history, values and programme track record. In the playing field between Market and Mission an organisation can reflect, develop and communicate their Case for Support – and their own "selves".

    Abstract [sv]

An analysis of microclimate differences leading to sporadic mould growth in Skokloster Castle, an unheated historic building2012Ingår i: Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings: Postprints from the Conference : Visby, February 9–11, 2011, Gotland University Press, 2012, s. 236-244Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Mould growth has repeatedly occurred in Skokloster Castle over the years. Visible mould was also found during a survey in September 2010. Mould has been found sporadically on walls, books and tapestries and behind paintings and within furniture in parts of the castle. Work is presented on the attempted correlation of incidence of mould growth and indoor climate recorded mainly during one year, from July 2008 to August 2009. The indoor climate is influenced to a high extent by the outdoor climate but is clearly improved by the influence of the building envelope. The absolute humidity is almost the same in the whole castle. Temperature differences between rooms are therefore decisive for the recorded differences in RH. Recorded RH differences could partly explain the location of mould growth. The results are discussed in relation to current models describing the critical levels of RH, temperature and substrates supporting mould growth.

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines how and if the understanding of wedding photography has changed during the shift of technology - from analog to digital photography. It examines if the changed conditions due to the shift of technology have changed the habits and conditions for the photographers working with wedding photography. It furthermore examines what impact these habits and conditions have had on the pictures of weddings. The investigation is based on interviews of six photographers that have worked professionally before and after the shift of technology, as well as of pictures by the photographers taken before and after the shift of technology.

Use of time and space has changed due to the shift of technology. The change has also had an influence on hierarchy among the photographers. Depending on not only the camera technology but also at the digital revolution of our society. The pictures have changed due to the change of technology, but at the same time pictures of wedded couples follow rigid norms. The shift of technology is to be understood as a shift of paradigm according to the habits and conditions of the photographers.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to interpret and discuss the weapon-graves of Viking Age Birka. The weapon-grave phenomenon is deemed differential in relation to the rest of the grave-material of the site, and thus the questions that motivate the thesis is: who was buried with weapons and why? Further questions arise regarding the social aspects of individuals who were buriedalong with weapons. The theoretical approach will be to evaluate any differences in 'social class', 'social age' and 'gender' between the weapon-grave contexts. By conducting qualitativeand quantified analysis of the grave-goods, this thesis adresses both overall and detailed patterns in correlation and constellations between weapons, other grave-goods and terms of burial.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to study how older art can be used to illustrate our contemporary society with a critical view and also to contribute to the discussion of for what reason we keep our public collections.

My essay is based on a case study of the 2008 summer exhibition ‘Queer: desire, power and identity’ at Nationalmuseum. The exhibition used art from different eras to show how the ideals, norms of gender, and how the symbols for power have changed throughout history. It also reveals how certain art or artists have been excluded from art history due to their sexual orientation.

This study is based on three questions:

    -          How can older art be used to illustrate a to our society contemporary theme?

    -          How can a public museum make an exhibition with a clear and active message?

    -          How can a clear and potentially sensitive message be shown without risking to be provocative towards either the visitors or the person(s) it is about.

My material is based on the exhibition, the work material from the museum, protocols, photographs, exhibition texts, and interviews with the creators of the exhibition. I have also added reviews of the exhibition to add more perspectives for my discussion.

    Abstract [en]

Between 1860 and 1940 approximately 1,1 million Swedish citizens emigrated to North America. But over 200 000 of them returned to Sweden. In this essay I have tried to estimate the impact of these people on the Swedish society. To make a deeper analyze possible, I have studied the parish of Glimåkra in southern Sweden and tried to trace the immigrants’ lives after their return to Sweden and thus estimate their impact on society.

By statistical analysis of migrants between Sweden and USA and between the parish of Glimåkra and USA I have concluded that the result can be used as a model for Sweden on a national basis. The impact of returned emigrants on the parish of Glimåkra is significant. I have been able to identify important areas in the development of the local society that are clearly linked to these people, returning with new knowledge, ideas and money. This is especially obvious in the establishment of independent religious congregations and in the organizations for sobriety.

Drottningholmsparken under 1900-talet2011Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the beginning of the 19th century Sweden is effected by the Napoleonic Wars and in the aftermath of the war Sweden looses Finland to Russia. This loss leads to the dismissal of King Gustav IV Adolf and the introduction of the Bernadotte dynasty on the Swedish throne. Over the century the industrialization plays a big part in the progress of Sweden. The growth of the industries leads to developments in the areas of agriculture. With this essay I would like to examine if the people on the countryside of Gotland keep the same pace as the people on the mainland in their introduction of new things. Is it possible to see any new innovations on the southern part of Gotland in estate inventories from the period between year 1840 to 1900, and if so which? I will also try to examine which part of the society, social class, leads the introduction of the modern things. The material I have used is estate inventories from three parishes on the southern Gotland. To ease the examination I have divided people and things into different groups. This has helped me to see the difference between people and things, and it has also helped me to see which society class it was that introduced modern things. New crops, new tools and a new way to cultivate are some of the improvements that we can see in the areas concerning agriculture. Example of new tool that are developed during this time is the “turning” plough and “claw” harrow. There are also developments in other parts of the society, like in the textile industry. Cotton becomes more frequently used and the textile goes from being expensive to be used by all classes. My conclusion is, with some exceptions, that the countryside on Gotland has, more or less, the same development pace as the countryside on the mainland of Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Acquiring a former station building can mean that the property owners must familiarize themselves with a lot of planning and building regulations. After the new Planning and Building Act code into force in 2011, the responsibility lie on the developer to ensure laws and regulations. Based on the regulatory framework that is available occurs sometimes balance issues, between care requirements and building codes.

The station building in Ormaryd was acquired in 2009 by two individuals who intended to accommodate office and retail space in the building. In doing so a new local plan of the area was established, including regulations on how the building could be used. By including road safety and noise, the risk was not considered appropriate to use the station building for housing. The new local plan classed the building with a “capital Q”, which meant that the building's cultural value shall be cared for. From an architectural documentation was an enriching story told that could clarify the many values of the building and its surrounding environment. The building is still an important symbol of the district, although it is no longer used for railway operations.

The long process that was followed by the change of use of the station featured everything from planning application, for consultation and preparation of documentation and fire control plan. It proved to be a complicated way, which largely came to touch on issues concerning accessibility, fire and ventilation. The owners themselves have been very interested in preserving the existing building and seen its values, therefore Ormaryd’s station may be altered in a gentle way, although results have not yet seen the light of day. It is proven that careful restorations can meet building codes, which this thesis will demonstrates. It will not only show the presumed change, it will also show other options. To avoid entirely the loss of cultural values when adapting a building is almost impossible but interventions can be minimized and additions made reversible.

    Abstract [en]

From a new perspective, this paper will examine the artillery and the pike role in the period 1700-1712 and the battalion´s battle formation in the Caroline combat tactics. Carolinian battle tactics were practiced during the period 1700-1721. The results from my study will be compared to existing research opinion regarding the selected subject areas, if the result confirms the thesis or question the existing research opinion. The source material used consists of eyewitness accounts from the period consisting of diaries, memoir, biography, general muster rolls and historical literature covering the subject. The analysis shows that the Caroline artillery took part in 12 battles during the period of 1700-1712. The analysis also shows that there was a close working between the infantry and artillery in attacks. This result contradicts the existing facility research mixture view that artillery was subordinate other weaponry because it prevented the Caroline attack tempo. In the analysis of the pike role in Caroline combat tactics, reveals nothing that confirms existing research opinion that the pike was an offensive melee weapon. Instead it seems that the pikes role was a support weapon with a defensive focus. The analysis of the battalion`s battle formation shows that the Caroline battalion battle formation did not follow the regulations of the battle formation. According to the existing research the battalion´s battle formation was as required by regulations. But according to the general muster rolls, there are differences between the battalions when it comes to the relationship of forces. So the Caroline battalion battle formation could not have been strictly required by regulations.

Creating animation for Transmedia: working with multiple products in synergy with each other2012Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

My purpose with this paper is to find out how my workflow is affected when creating two products in synergy with each other, and if I can still reach a sufficient level of quality by my standards.

I chose to do my research during a transmedia project. By observing what happened during the project, I could compare my experience from this project with workflows normally used for animation in the games and film industry.

We spent the majority of the time alloted for the project planning how the two products would unfold, and how we could link them together in a way that benefited the project as a whole. We however did not get as much time in the production phase, which meant that I had to produce the animation in the order that I received the required assets.

My conclusion was that I appreciated being able to plan how the two products would work together, but that I and the team would have needed more time in the production to test our ideas.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Although anti-Semitism is a fact of Arab life, most individuals prefer to describe it as political animosity and religious polemic. This explains why my study has only drawn from works on the subject by Western historians – because no Arab historian has even acknowledged that it exists, let alone written about it.

In this study I compare and analyze the different views my sources have on some matters related to the subject of Jew-hatred among Arabs; these are Zionism, the origins of Arab nationalism, the legendary age of tolerance in Al-andalus (Muslim Spain) and the treatment of Jews in the Quran. In most of my sources I find that:

    • For Arabs, Zionism and Jewishness are one and the same thing.
    • The influence of Nazi ideals and prejudices on Arab nationalism and the paranoid attitudes of the region’s leaders effectively stymie any chances of reconciliation between the two peoples.
    • Historical evidences show that the much-praised racial harmony of Al-andalus has been exaggerated for political purposes.
    • The negative image of Jews in the Quran has been deliberately misinterpreted in order to keep hatred of Jews alive among Arabs today.

To see just how effective anti-Semitic indoctrination has been on reasonable, educated people, I sent a simple question to my Arab friends around the world asking them to say what they really think of Jews, hoping to get some candid answers.  But to my great disappointment, not one of them replied.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

With the help of large amount of archive material I have examined how Gustavsberg in Värmdö were affected by the great labor migration in Gustavsberg porcelain factory during the period 1869-1924. I have chosen to investigate how the municipality dealt with the poverty relief issue out of the labour immigration perspective. To my surprise I found out that Värmdö was not responsible for Gustavsberg in the poverty issue. The workers belonged to the factory, which had a relatively well-developed system of poverty relief in place. This is not to say that the workers received any support from the factory to any great extent. The general causes for poverty were lack of housing, unemployment, disease and what we today refer as old age. In regards to housing, it was not a problem, because the workers lived rent-free in the factory apartments. In case of unemployment the factory often arranged other chores for the employees until the situation changed for the better again. The factory had access to its own hospital with a doctor who came from Stockholm. For financial support there were Help Fund, Health and Funeral Fund and Savings Fund in workers disposal. These funds were based on the deposits of the workers’ wages and factory owners' donations or grants. The relationship between the factory workers and the factory would have been quite complex due to the workers strong dependence to their employer. During the time span of my research the factory owner Wilhelm Odelberg created a patriarchal society within the factory with his style of leadership. This meant that he was involved in every aspect of his workers lives, from factory, school, health care and church to such things as the factory store, where the employees were only able to only buy on credit.

This made it likely very difficult for the workers to ask for any support or other type of poverty relief. I have not found any evidence that the great labor migration to the factory would have affected the poverty relief in any significant way. There are other factors that have affected the poverty relief like the poverty relief regulation from 1871 and the political discussions around social security as a result of the rise of the industrialism. For the individual worker the changes in economy affected the level of poverty relief. During the good times the more liberal poverty politics favored those in need of support.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of my thesis has been to examine the public debate in daily newspapers about children in 1882. For material I have used newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet from the year 1882. My study is based on a regulation concerning public schools from 1882 and a labour law concerning child labour from 1881. I have also examined other articles that focused on children to get an overview of what the papers wrote about them. With the articles I found in the Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet I have made a quantitative content analysis. As a method for the content analysis, I have used text analysis as a tool. As a result of my study I found a total of 228 articles about children and of those 82 dealt with the elementary school regulation and the child labour law in various ways. The other articles concerning children discussed issues such as how to raise your children, charity questions and accidents and crimes involving children. These articles were written from a perspective where society showed concern over the children's environment. Often the articles expressed great confidence and trust in the public schools as educators and as a place for learning and supervision.

Barns samspel i den fria leken: en observationsstudie2010Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Attraction to Violent Game Concepts2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This is a small scale research conducted by a Game Design student about attraction to a game concept of violent nature. A survey was executed and launched on social media such as Facebook to gain many participants in a short period of time. They were asked how attracted they were to the graphics of the concept and also if and how much money they would pay for a game like it. One of the most important parts of this research is that the participators are of a mixed group when it comes to age and gender, but also location, since these things tend to control our environment which in turn can shape a person and their morals. The results are presented in simple graphs and discussed together with results from similar research regarding violent games and how they affect the players and in turn society. Despite the violent contents of the graphics used in the survey, the most popular rating indicates that many participants are attracted to it and that they would consider paying for such a game.

    Abstract [en]

This Bachelor paper deals with skeletal diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. 24 medieval individuals from the block Banken 1 in Visby, Gotland were chosen for an osteological analysis. Osteoporosis affects the bone with low bone mineral density and can lead to possible fractures and Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease. A DEXA reading was done at Dr. Roland Alvarssons Doctorial practice in Visby and the results from the DEXA reading showed that none of the individuals suffered from osteoporosis, but one suffered from osteopenia. Some individuals were x-rayed at Visby hospital and the x-rays were interpreted by Dr. Staffan Jennerholm. The x-ray showed that two individuals suffered from osteoarthritis. You can get a glint into the past and daily life of medieval people with a little help of modern technology like x-ray and DEXA reading.

Imaginary vessels in the Late Bronze age of Gotland and south Scandinavia: Ship settings, rock carvings and decorated metalwork2010Ingår i: Current Swedish Archaeology, ISSN 1102-7355, Vol. 18, s. 79-103Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The paper compares the Bronze Age ship settings of Gotland with the vessels portrayed in rock carvings on the Scandinavian mainland. It also makes comparisons with the drawings of vessels on decorated metalwork of the same period. It considers their interpretation in relation to two approaches taken to the depictions of ships in other media. One concerns the use of boats to transport the sun, while the other emphasises the close relationship between seagoing vessels and the dead. A third possibility concerns the distinctive organisation of prehistoric communities on Gotland. It seems possible that the largest of the ship settings were equivalent to the Bronze Age cult houses found on the mainland and that they may even have represented the island itself.

    Abstract [en]

The bark from prehistory – an osteological analysis on dog bones from the Stone Age settlements of Hemmor and Gullrum at Gotland and a theoretic study of the secular and sacred roles of the dog during the Neolithic.

Dog bones from two Pitted Ware Culture (around 2500 BC) settlements, Hemmor in När parish and Gullrum in Näs parish/Havdhem parish, at southern Gotland, Sweden are analyzed. The analysis contains a study of age, withers height and size estimation as well as skeletal changes and pathologies. The attempt of the analysis is to highlight the secular and sacred role of the dog during the Neolithic at Gotland. The dog bones were collected during excavations in the years 1890 and 1903 and were found across the entire surfaces of the settlements.

Although there were no specific dog breeds during the Stone Age, the dogs at Hemmor and Gullrum show a wide range of size (withers height spans from 39,74 cm to 56,47 cm) and may therefore have been used for different purposes depending on their size. The dogs were not eaten, but evidence of skinning is found. The results are compared with other analysis made on dog bones from similar settlements.

The analysis is complemented with a theoretic study of the functions of dogs in other parts of the world. Ethnologic studies of traditional societies show the importance and wide range of functions in which the dogs are used and can give us an idea of the corresponding functions at a Neolithic Gotland. The functions vary from pet and guardian of the settlement to fishing, hunting and ritual purposes.

Turbine-Mounted Lidar:The pulsed lidar as a reliable alternative.2011Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Expectations for turbine-mounted lidar are increasing. The installation of lidars in wind turbine nacelles for measuring incoming winds, preventing wind gusts and increasing energy productions is after recently studies, technically and economically feasible. Among available lidar types, the most studied were continuous wave lidars because they were the most reliable apparatus when this initiative began. However, after studying technical considerations and checking commercial lidars, it was found that pulsed lidarslead this technology due to their promising results. The purpose of this report is to fill the gap between the interest in this technology and the absence of any academic papers that analyzes continuous-wave and pulsed lidars forthe mounted lidar concept. Hence, this report discusses the importance of turbine mounted lidars for wind power industry, different possible configurations and explains why specifically pulsed lidars are becoming more important for the mounted lidarmarket.

    Abstract [en]

Hällefors is one of the municipalities in Sweden attempting to break free from the traditional corporate structure. While it has a long history of iron and steel production, technology-based industry is now being supplemented by investment in cultural, culinary and design projects. The aim of this chapter is first to chart the progress of the municipality toward sustainable development and secondly to investigate whether there have been any fundamental changes made to the system. This means that we shall consider the adoption of a path-dependent trend and formative instances in local development processes, with a neo-institutional framework as our theoretical guide. One major discovery is that the term ”sustainable development” crops up constantly in daily dialogue and practical application; it appears in municipal strategic and policy declarations, in both preliminary and comprehensive documents, and in sector-oriented programmes. Yet despite the fact that there is clear evidence of sustainable-development thinking, it has not replaced previous models of local development. Although the concept has become familiar, it is not possible to say whether it has actually contributed to fundamental institutional change on the local level.

Preventive conservation by climate control in historic buildings2008Ingår i: Preservation and conservation in 21st century : knowledge, challenge, attitude :: preprints of the 8th Triennal Meeting for Conservators of the Baltic States, Tallinn, 7-10 May 2008 / [ed] Pia Ehasalu, Kriste Sibul, Talinn: Conservation Centre Kanut , 2008, s. 56-59Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper shows how we can work step by step to design appropriate climate control systems. We know enough about climate specifications to reduce risks significantly. The specifications for preservation should be wheighed against other factors in a risk assessment, methods used in museums need to be adapted for this purpose. A climate analysis will give the basic conditions for climate control. A climate control strategy should use a combination of passive control, ventilation, heating and humidity control to achieve the desired indoor climate at low cost and with minimal impact on the building.

    Abstract [en]

The objective of the present project was to develop and evaluate a solution forstorage of textiles in humid indoor environments, in this case churches. The proposed solution is based on creating a microclimate in the storage cabinets separated from the rest of the building. The cabinets were made air tight and insulated. With the use of a simple control system for conservation heating, the relative humidity can be kept below dangerous levels. The project comprises development and evaluation of textile cabinets in three churches on Gotland, Sweden. Measurements over one year show that cabinets with climate control are a simple and reliable method to prevent mould growth. Overall, the control systems have worked according to expectations. The relative humidity and temperature in the cabinets was maintained within a safe interval.

    Abstract [en]

Adaptive ventilation, controlled with respect to absolute humidity inside and outside a building, canbe used to reduce RH below risk levels for biodeterioration. In the present case study, adaptiveventilation was used in a historic stone building with severe moisture problems. Measurementscarried out over a year shows that ventilation had a significant drying effect. The mould risk is keptat an acceptable level with exception of two short periods .Short term variations in RH are acceptableaccording to conservation standards. Heating or dehumidification as an auxiliary measure would beneeded only for a short period of time. The performance can be improved by increased fan capacityand improving air tightness of the building.

Heat pumps for conservation heating2008Ingår i: Proceedings of the 8th symposium on building physics in the Nordic countries: Copenhagen, June 16-18, 2008 / [ed] Carsten Rode, Lyngby: Technical university of Denmark , 2008, s. 1143-1150Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Conservation heating is used to control relative humidity in order to better preserve historic buildings and their interiors. The heating load for conservation heating when applied in a Nordic climate was characterized in order to investigate if and how air-to-air heat pumps can be used for conservation heating. Heating for conservation results in indoor temperatures that follow the seasonal variation of the outdoor temperature. Depending on the season and moisture load on the building, the indoor temperature will be 0-10 °C higher than the ambient temperature. The heating load is much smaller and more stable over the year as compared to heating for comfort. In the south of Sweden conservation heating is motivated mainly by preservation aspects, whereas in northern Sweden the potential for energy saving is considerable. Heat pumps in general and air-to air heat pumps in particular, have properties that match the requirements of conservation heating and can provide a cost effective solution. Heat pumps specially designed for conservation heating could improve the performance radically in relation to standard heat pumps.

The Indoor Climate in Skokloster Castle2010Ingår i: Historical buildings as museums: Systems for climate control and heritage preservation / [ed] Davide Del Curto, Firenze: Nardini Editore , 2010, s. 84-93Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Skokloster castle is a heavy stone and brick building without any active climatization. It houses a large collection of artefacts shown in their historic environment without any showcases. The objective of this study is to analyse the indoor climate, make a risk assessment and to propose interventions to improve the indoor climate with respect to the long term preservation of the collection. Relative humidity and temperature have been monitored within the castle for more than one year. Air exchange in selected rooms has been measured quarterly using diffusive sampling. The indoor climate is characterized by extremely low temperatures and high relative humidity in the winter. Even though the building does reduce the effect of outdoor variations, the variations in the indoor climate are larger than one would prefer in a museum. The primary risks associated with the indoor climate are mould growth, mechanical damages and chemical degradation. The variations in RH can be reduced by enhancing the effective hygrothermal inertia of the building through a reduction of the air exchange. In order to substantially reduce the mould risk, conservation heating and/or dehumidification would be needed.

Convective heating in a medieval church: Effects of air-to-air heat pumps on air movements, particle deposition and temperature distribution2009Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Air Distribution in Rooms (Roomvent) 2009, Busan, Korea, 2009Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Europe many historic buildings use direct electric heating. Air-to-air heat pumps are an interesting alternative, in particular for conservation heating. However, the convective heating may accelerate soiling of walls and artefacts by increasing the velocity and turbulence. The objective of the present paper is to discuss the general problem, the methodology for studying air motions and temperature distribution, and to present the results from a case study where air-to-air heat pumps and bench heaters were used for heating in a medieval church. The temperatures, velocities and humidity in the church have been measured for four different heating modes. The present study does not indicate any major disadvantages of using heat pumps for background heating in stone churches of the studied kind. More detailed long term studies are needed to ascertain the effects over time.

Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings: Postprints from the Conference : Visby, February 9–11, 20112012Proceedings (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Energy efficiency is an issue that brings the trade-off between aspects of use and preservation to a head. On the one hand, interventions for energy efficiency facilitate long-term use by reducing operating costs; on the other hand, the interventions may have both a physical and a visual impact on the cultural heritage value and the fabric of the building.

In order to promote a sustainable use and preservation of historic buildings, The Swedish Energy Agency instituted a National Research Program for Energy Efficiency in HistoricBuildings. The first stage of the program ranfrom 2007 to 2010 with a total budget of around 4 million Euro. Additional funding was provided by the Church of Sweden and the NationalHeritage Board. There were fifteen projects involving some thirty researchers from different Swedish universities and research institutes.

To mark the end of the first stage of the national research program the international conference Energy Efficiency in Historic Buildings was held in Visby in February 2011. Most of the projects within the program were presented at the conference and international key-note speakers were invited to each session, giving a total of 24 papers. More than one hundred participants, representing ten countries, participated in the conference.

Climate Comfort Measurements in Swedish Churches Equipped with New Heating System2008Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th International Thermal Manikin and Modeling Meeting, University of Coimbra , 2008Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many church buildings in Sweden have problems with rising heating costs combined with deterioration of inventories as a consequence of an inappropriate indoor climate. Gotland University has in collaboration with Gotland's churches installed a new radiant heating system for churches. The developed system has floor heating and bench heating pads combined with radiant heaters hanging from above the bench rows. These new installations have now been evaluated with respect to thermal climate comfort. The results show that the clothing of course plays an important role even with help radiant heaters and bench heat pads. Persons on both sides of the instrument as well as the height of the heaters do seem to play a smaller role in this investigation. An important parameter to check is the risk for drought that clearly is dependent on of the construction of the church benches.

Climate Control in Churches in Northern Sweden2009Ingår i: Proceedings Cold Climate HVAC Sisimiut, Greenland, 16-19 March 2009, 2009Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the extreme north of Sweden, the indoor climate and energy performance of 50 churches is being monitored in order to improve energy efficiency and to improve the indoor climate with respect to the preservation. The objective of the present paper is to investigate if and how both indoor climate and energy efficiency can be improved through better climate control. Three cases were chosen to study churches with no heating, permanent heating and intermittent heating. In each case the actual indoor climate was compared to climate criteria for preservation to determine the consequences in terms of climate control. The results show that there is a conflict between the climate criteria for preservation and the present use of the churches that cannot be resolved by technical solutions only. In order to come up with reasonable compromise research is needed on climate criteria and risk management at extremely low ranges of RH.

Solar energy and cultural-heritage values2011Ingår i: World Renewable Energy Conference, Linköping, May 2011: Volume 8 (Low-Energy Architecture) / [ed] Moshfegh, Bahram, Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press, 2011, s. 2034-2040Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The use of solar energy in a building of cultural-heritage value is an issue that brings the trade-off between aspects of use and preservation to a head. A sustainable use and preservation of historic buildings requires broad and long term compromises between social, economic and environmental aspects. The objective of the present paper is to present and discuss a decision framework for such compromises regarding the use of solar energy in historic buildings.

Far tail or extreme day returns, mutual fund cash flows and investment behaviour2010Ingår i: Applied Financial Economics, ISSN 0960-3107, E-ISSN 1466-4305, Vol. 20, nr 16, s. 1241-1256Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the frequency of extreme trading days and investment behaviour in Sweden. We show that the frequency, as well as the magnitude of extreme trading days has increased over time. We also show that the frequency of extreme trading days in a year is positively correlated to the frequency the preceding year. Furthermore, we show that aggregate cash flows into equity and bond funds are unrelated to risk measured by standard deviation of return. Our findings show that investors, individuals as well as corporations, use simple passive investment strategies and hence, do not believe in market timing or wish to risk capital on capturing far tail or black swan type returns.
