Four Eighteenth-century Medical Dissertations under the Presidency of Nils Rosén: Edited and translated, with an introduction and commentary by Urban Örneholm2003Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Nils Rosén (von Rosenstein) (1706–73), Professor of medicine at Uppsala University, is less known than his colleague Linnaeus, but has, mainly through his textbook Underrättelser om Barn-Sjukdomar (1st monograph ed. 1764), had an enormous influence on the care of children throughout Europe.

In this thesis, four Latin dissertations, put forth under the presidency of Nils Rosén, are edited, with translation, commentary, and introduction. These dissertations quite clearly represent the latest medical knowledge of the mid 18th century, and recent theories are propounded, discussed, and examined against practical and empirical knowledge; the texts are thus representative examples of the kind of academic dissertations that communicated and discussed relevant factual matter as opposed to those that just constituted an amount of text, suitable for elaborating on during the disputational ceremony.

In my introduction, I mainly concentrate on medical and pharmacological technical terminology, but more general aspects on scholarly and scientific Neo-Latin are also dealt with. The dissertations edited are De variolis praecavendis (1751), De variolis curandis (1754), both treating smallpox; De epilepsia infantili (1754), on children’s epilepsy, and De morbis infantum (1752), dealing with the health care of children in genere, and interesting as an early Latin version of parts of Underrättelser.

Johan Ihre on the origins and history of the runes: Three Latin dissertations from the mid 18th century2000Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Johan Ihre (1707-80),professor Skytteanus, i.e. professor of eloquence and politics, at Uppsala University for 42 years, is considered the most prominent Swedish humanist and philologistof the 18th century. Under his presidency more than 450 dissertations were submitted on a variety of subjects. In this thesis his three Latin dissertations on the origin and history of the runes are presented in a critical edition with translation and a commentary. These texts, De runarum in Svecia antiquitate 1769; De runarum patria et origine 1770 and De runarum in Svecia occasu I-II, 177l-73, were epoch making in the respect that they meant the full emergence of the rational era in the field of runology and dealt a deathblow to the old and fabulous ideas on the origin of the runes. In the introduction, the position of the Latin language in 18th century Sweden and the system of examinations (disputationes) at the Swedish universities of the period is discussed. This is followed by short surveys of the life of Johan Ihre and the earlier history of runology. In the chapter on language and style a number of orthographical, morphological and syntactical phenomena of later Neo-Latin, as they appear in the texts under discussion, are treated, and through a comparison with a great number of other dissertations from the same period the characteristic features of scientific Latin prose, of which the Latin dissertations formed a part, are analysed.

    Abstract [en]

The material for this report consists of 55 student texts written in the national test of Swedish during the last compulsory course in the upper secondary school (18–19 year-olds). The task was to argue for more literature and reading for children in order to develop the children’s language, reasoning skills and fantasy. The student texts are to be seen as contributions to the debate in a local newspaper. Consideration is also given to the test material, that is texts both fiction and non-fiction, and the written instruction.

The aim of the study is to investigate how the students handle the demand to use ideas and thoughts from the texts they have read before the actual writing test. Teachers sometimes find this part of the task hard to assess and ask for strict guidelines in the assessment material.

The texts show that the students generally know that they are supposed to use facts and thoughts from the texts, and most of them also know that they are supposed to give references to the texts they quote from or refer to. Chapter 3 lists different ways of referring, from the elegant or neat to very circumstantial references or no reference at all. Using some part of a text without a reference is called “theft” for pedagogical reasons. A frequent pattern is to give a reference the first time a text is used but not the second or third time.

Chapter 4 goes deeper into what the students choose to refer to or quote, that is how the content of the texts is made use of. The majority of the students get facts from two of seveal possible sources and build their argumentation on those. Only one shows a critical approach towards the texts in question.

The student texts are also compared with published contributions to the debate in a local newspaper. First the question of voice in the two text materials is studied. The students speak more as an “I” and the published debaters as a “we” Then references in the newspaper texts are compared to those in the school texts.

The recommendation to teachers is to keep on working with references but not at an academic level. The ideal for the students is to reach a control of different references for different text types and genres. Most important it is a question of honesty, not to steal but to announce loans from other sources.

    Abstract [en]

In national tests in Swedish conducted in Swedish upper secondary schools, students write essays on a topic presented in a booklet containing texts (fiction and non-fiction). Students are given this booklet in advance so that they can read and prepare for the writing task. Each essay task requires students to read the booklet and use information and standpoints from the texts. To study how students’ reading is reflected in their essays, I have used Langer’s model which presents four stances that a reader moves in and out of while reading. Two argumentative tasks are studied and the results show different reading patterns depending on what the instruction asks students to do. In the first task students read and comment on an article, which leads them to step ‘outside’ the article and rethink their own experiences (stance 3), and to objectify the article and the viewpoints contained within it (stance 4). The second task requires students to give examples from various articles and to present their own views on the matter in question. This leads to more reporting (stance 2) and less stepping outside the reading. The context of a test leads students to engage in discursive reading rather than literary reading, to use Langer’s terms. Meaningful reading involves all four stances, but students’ essays do not fully reveal which stances they have moved through while reading and preparing for the test. When assessing such texts, teachers can gain useful information about students’ reading strategies by simultaneously contemplating the use of Langer’s four stances.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the assessment of school texts by students in Swedish upper-secondary school or in the corresponding adult education and concentrates on what differs between the grades Pass and Fail. The 60 texts used in the survey come from the 1997 archives of the national test construction group.

A questionnaire to teachers asks what criteria are most important when distinguishing between Pass and Fail. The five criteria pointed out are Holistic scoring, Relevant content, The connecting thought, Sentence structure and How the student has followed the instructions.

The most salient result regarding grades is the difference between grades from the students’ own teachers and from the independent assessors. Ten texts have received a Fail from the student’s own teacher, but as many as 35 get an average Fail from three assessors. There is variation in assessment, but 18 Fail texts and 18 Pass texts get a unanimous grade.

Quantitative analyses of the 60 texts show a definite correlation between grade and number of words. However, the Fail-groups among narrative, expository and argumentative texts contain both the shortest and the longest texts. School texts are longer now than thirty years ago, especially texts with low grades. Sentences and words have become shorter.

Coherence is investigated by a method of reference cohesion. No clear difference between Pass and Fail texts can be found, but between types of essay topics. Also important is the organization of the text and its paragraphs, a factor which separates Fail and Pass texts. Various aspects of sentence structure show better results in the Pass texts.

The thesis is concluded with a commentary on the demands of the last compulsory course in Swedish. The needed level is argued to be the ability to write for an unknown reader.

    Abstract [en]

How do you find the connecting thought in a text?

This study deals with texts written by 19-year-old students in upper-secondary school or students in the corresponding adult education. From a larger corpus I here work with eight texts, expository or argumentative, written within the national test in Swedish. Teachers have stated in a questionnaire on assessment that The connecting thought is one of five criteria with a high ranking when they decide whether to pass a text or not. The object of the study is to find out more about coherence in these school texts.

I have used a model for analysis by Melin (1999), which combines six factors to describe coherence and structure in a text. The factors are: reference cohesion, focus on main cohesive chain, theme-rheme and theme-theme connections, conjunctions and paragraph linking.

The main result is that this combination of coherence factors shows a difference between texts that have passed the test and those that have not passed. The Pass texts reach a higher value on four out of six factors, especially on focus. This is a pleasing result; a text with focus on the most important content is of course better than a confused text without focus.

Can this model for analysis be useful for a larger text corpus? It may be impossible to find a model that is easy to work with and still gives as much information as the sum of the six factors used here. What model can work in the classroom? It is a good thing that teachers see the structure of a text and take it into consideration when grading, but they shall also be able to help students to improve unfocused texts.

    Abstract [en]

Fiction in the national tests in Swedish – a gender question?

During the national tests in the school subject of Swedish the students at upper secondary level use a booklet with texts, both fiction and non-fiction, to read and write about. The project group constructing the tests try to make sure that there is an equal distribution between male and female authors.

The aim of this article is to study how female and male students choose among essay topics concerning literature and among literary texts at their disposal.

The most salient result is that female students much more often choose to write about literature, no matter what poems, short stories or novel chapters they are presented with. The proportion of male students increases if the main character in the text to work with is a boy or a man. However, the sex of the author seems to bear little importance for the students’ choice. Another result is that the students are influenced by the perspective in a poem they are asked to transform into a short story. If the poem is told in the first person, the student is likely to write her story in the first person. If the poem on the other hand is in the third person, most student also choose third person for their stories.

Other studies have shown that male students read less than their female classmates all through the school system. The conclusion of this study is that gender issues must be discussed more during lessons in Swedish to make readers of all pupils and students according to the goals in the national curriculum.
