Refugees, rights and writing: An Arendtian Perspective2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ours is a time of global institutional change. It would perhaps be premature to refer to this situation as a condition of statelessness, but there is a sense in which the modern state has lost its privileged position in the exercise of democratic politics. Partly through its own act of outsourcing and outlawing, partly through pressure from global actors and economic structures, it has assisted in creating a growing call of ‘precarious’ people around the world: migrants, refugees, stateless persons. The number of people without rights or work in Europe is growing. In political life, this group is the subject of increasingly hostile discourse on ‘illegal immigrants’ and ‘international terrorism’. This paper explores how a rereading of the work Hannah Arendt can contribute to the analytical and political task of giving an alternative meaning to the presence of this group in our societies. She shows us the stateless person as a victim subjected to a very specific form of domination; as an emblematic figure whose status exposes the contradiction of state-centered citizenship and the discourse of human rights; and as an important political actor whose protests can become visible sites of active citizenship.

    Abstract [en]

Hélène Cixous’ engagement with animals is a significant but neglected aspect of her work. In this article I trace one specific character among her animals, Fips, a dog she had when she was living in Algiers during the late 1940s. By reflecting on this figure, I outline the way the dehumanising logic of colonialism and anti-Semitism are critiqued by Cixous. I lift up her themes of relationality and corporeality as constructive for animal studies. Taking the work of Jacques Derrida as a starting point, the article shows how Cixous’ primal encounter with Fips produces a wound that, belatedly, ruptures the barriers between herself and this dog; its dehiscence reveals Fips’ ‘profound animal humanity’ generated by shared suffering, finitude, and love. The lesson Cixous learns from revivifying the memory of this dog is, I suggest, how to become more human. The ‘humanity’ of the dog is the capacity to see and indeed love outside preconceived ideas: ‘Perhaps the irony is that we are never more human than when we are dogs.’ Becoming more human is an assault on the borders of racialised exclusion and a challenge to the false humanism of the colonial project.

    Abstract [en]

The paper aims to examine how well a small group unaccompanied children have established themselves in Swedish society. In order to determine how well they have established the empirical material which is primarily based on quantitative data has been measured with a theoretical model developed by the theorists Nancy Fraser and Alistair Ager and Alison Strang. Based on the theoretical framework the unaccompanied children establishments have been measured in example income, education, debts with Kronofogdemyndigheten and social network. It was found that the unaccompanied children had not achieved the establishment in the society that was expected from the theoretical framework. Their results were also generally below the national average for young adults in Sweden who are the same age. The empirical data indicates that the unaccompanied children have a delay in the Swedish school system, which also implies a delay in the establishment of the Swedish labor market. Furthermore, the essay question whether a measurement of the establishment shall be fair, consider the conditions the unaccompanied children are given after their arrival in Sweden and also what is reasonable to expect of them.

Conflict, Resources and the Responsibility of Corporations: What responsibility do natural resources corporations that operate in conflict risk areas have to ensure that human rights are respected?2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims at analyzing the responsibility corporations, which are extracting valuable minerals from conflict risk and conflict affected areas, have in terms of respecting human rights. The thesis analyzes corporate responsibility mostly from a moral but also a legal perspective. In terms of the moral responsibility, the thesis has strategically chosen to examine the moral responsibility of corporations to respect human rights through the moral responsibility of their employees. The stance, that the thesis launches, is that the moral responsibility of the employees as individuals does transcend upon corporations making the business enterprise responsible for respecting human rights. The legal obligation of corporations in this matter is referred to domestic court decisions, which have ruled that corporations through business decisions have violated the human rights of affected individuals.

The theoretical framework is based on the principle of due diligence, which has proven to be crucial when incorporating management policies and risk-assessment mechanisms within the structure of corporations. Through the analysis of the Kimberley Certification Scheme, which is a state-to-state agreement with the aim to hinder conflict-diamonds from entering into the international market, a lack of due diligence framework suitable for corporations has been revealed. The scheme is flawed as it does not provide corporations extracting diamonds from conflict risk and conflict affected areas with a due diligence framework. The thesis draws the conclusion that corporations are both morally and legally responsible to respect human rights. In addition, the Kimberley Certification Scheme is a step to hinder conflict diamonds from entering into the international market. However, the scheme must be re-examined and elaborated into a framework where due diligence is included. These measures will allow corporations to operate with clear guidelines on how to extract valuable minerals in conflict risk and conflict affected areas whilst performing due diligence. Such an adjustment will allow corporations to avoid either directly or indirectly to finance actions, which could lead to human rights abuses.

Kvinnan i Islamiska staten: En studie av IS:s propagandatidsskrift Dabiqs sektion To/From Our Sisters.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Islamic state is on the rise with a self-proclaimed caliphate. Research has shown that thousands of people travel to join the organization. Even though Swedish news coverage constantly reports about women being victims of the Islamic state, fifteen to twenty young Swedish women travelled to the caliphate in year 2014 alone. This study analyzes the Islamic state’s propaganda magazine Dabiq’s women section, “To/From Our Sisters”, and constitutes the material basis for this research. The research aims to answer what kind of roles women are ascribed in Dabiq, and which role, if any, women is ascribed in the Islamic state’s militant Jihadism.

To achieve this, framing as content analysis of Dabiq’s articles directed toward women will be conducted. The material is analyzed with a social constructivist theory. The analysis shows that women are ascribed a number of roles in the articles. The roles are the strong woman; the wife; women as a possession; the woman as the Muslim ideal; mother and the woman as a passive participator of jihad. The study also show that the part woman play in jihad is not as an active participant of battle, but as a mother who produce sons to the Islamic state who can be sent out in war. Along with being a satisfying wife who is loyal toward her husband no matter what happens to him.

    Abstract [en]

Western scholars have long sought to grasp the essence of and explain Buddhism. Western representation of Buddhism has been in a manner that reflects their concerns and interests. In addition to this it is also known that Buddhism in Sweden is seen in a favorable way. This study tries to locate where this positive attitude toward Buddhism stems from and if it is represented in this manner in Swedish textbooks. Therefore three textbooks of upper secondary class of religion are to be examined, not only to see if there is a positive attitude towards it, but to see in what manner Buddhism is depicted in Swedish schools on the whole. To achieve this, a content analysis that contains two different methods are conducted to approach the matter. The analysis shows that the chapters which regard Buddhism is depicted in an all together favorable way, with a focus on the life of the Buddha and his discipline, the doctrine. The authors try to de-emphasize aspects of the mythical and narrative dimension which can be conceived as strange in the west. Theravada is portrayed as “pure” Buddhism. Furthermore monks are mentioned in a more comprising way in comparison to nuns. To conclude Buddhism is depicted in a manner that reflects western values and interests.

    Abstract [en]

Religious traditions are something that all of us have learnt about in school, even if we do not have a personal connection to a specific religion. Studies have shown that there is a discrepancy between what we learn about religious traditions and religiosity in school, and how religious people practice their faith in everyday life. How the religious tradition plays a part of an individual’s identity is not something that school textbooks specifically explains. For example, the course material does not mention how geographical context affects a person’s religiosity, even though the course curriculum, that is being studied in this thesis clearly states that you have to give examples of how different aspects of someone’s identity affect their religious identity.

This thesis discusses how Lived Religion can be included in course material as well as in the teaching of religious education in school in order to give a more accurate and more democratic picture of religiosity. Lived religion is a perspective that capture how individuals express their religious tradition and how religiosity could look like in different contexts. To use Lived religion as a complement in education could also help the pupils to achieve what the objectives in the curriculum asks for. Nevertheless, even if Lived religion is a helpful compliment to the traditional way of teaching the topic of religion, this thesis also shows that is it important to be aware of how this new perspective is used. If the perspective of Lived religion is not used correctly in classroom or how you explain someone’s religious identity, it could have greater negative consequences than its positive gain.

The title of this thesis aims to points towards how Lived religion can communicate a more complete picture of what religiosity is. The thesis argues that it is problematic to omit e.g. religious tradition or geographical context from an individual’s identity. That is also one of the main points of Lived religion, which is that religious identity is the religion lived out in the day-to-day life.

Människan, naturen och Gud: En studie av miljöetiken i nutida kristen teologi2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study has three aims. The first aim is to analyse and clarify three models of theological environmental ethics. A second aim is to critically examine and compare the environmental ethical models of the three theologians. The third aim is to present a reasonable model of a theological environmental ethic. The overall problem of the study is how an acceptable theological environmental ethic can be constructed.

The method used in the study is a content analysis of ideas, allowing the author to reconstruct a model of theological environmental ethics and clarify some important problems which a reasonable theological ethics must relate to. It is argued that a view of life perspective in environmental ethics gives an important complement to philosophical environmental ethics when analysing and constructing environmental ethical models.

The theologians analysed in this study represent three different models of theological environmental ethics. Larry Rasmussen provides a communitarian virtue ethical and biocentric model with community, love and justice as central values. Leonardo Boff provides an ecocentric model characterised by his liberation theological standpoint combined with ecology. Boff’s model holds justice as a central value and argues for a responsibility for creating fair relations between humans and between humans and nature. Rosemary Radford Ruether’s model is characterised by ecofeminist theory and feminist theology. Ruether’s model is ecocentric and based on the idea that distorted gender relations are primary causes of the ecological crisis. All theologians in the study use the Bible and the Christian tradition as well as resources from natural and social science when constructing their models.

The author of the study proposes her own biocentric model of theological environmental ethics grounded in an awareness of the existential vulnerability of human beings, a principle of ecological justice, a critique of hierarchical relations and the Christian idea of loving your neighbour.

Eskatologiska tendenser i Svenska kyrkan: En analys av Svenska kyrkans biskopsbrev2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsens resultat uppvisar flera olika uttryck.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The 21st century marked the birth of a new kind of terrorism. Since then, Europe has suffered frequent terrorist attacks, resulting in countries adopting stricter laws and control measures to combat terrorism. The aim of this thesis is therefore to investigate if stricter anti-terrorist legislation in France and Great Britain can lead to unlawful limitations on human rights. The thesis critically examines international conventions, legislation, case law, articles, and doctrine by using an investigative approach and a comparative method to answer the following questions; what is required for countries to declare a state of emergency and thus have a statutory right to derogate from or limit certain human rights? What legal measures regarding preventive detention and other control measures have France and Great Britain adopted to combat terrorism and does the limitations violate Article 5 of the ECHR? How is the right to non-discrimination regulated in Article 14 of the ECHR? The thesis also aims to clarify if any limitations of human rights can be justified by the legal theories of John Finnis.

In conclusion, the thesis reveals that terrorism can constitute a state of emergency according to Article 15 of the ECHR.  Thus, both France and Great Britain's declarations of states of emergency are accepted and legal in accordance with Article 15 of the ECHR. Furthermore, the thesis states that the legislation in France and Great Britain, which regulate preventive detention, may constitute a possible violation of article 5 ECHR, due to its lack of predictability. The thesis has also shown that the legislation regarding preventive detention may constitute a violation of article 5 ECHR if its applied wrongfully and thus, may also constitute a violation of article 14 ECHR.

How to Prevent the Political Misuse of Responsibility to Protect2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Responsibility to Protect (R2P) as a legal norm has emerged through the international community’s failures to respond to genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing committed by a state towards its own population. The R2P as a legal norm provides the international community with the right, responsibility and ability to intervene using force in sovereign states. Despite the legal norm of R2P, genocide and crimes against humanity still occur. Sometimes, no interventions are made when needed. On occasions, powerful states have invoked the R2P as a pretext for furthering their own political interests and aims. This thesis presents examples of when the R2P possibly have been used for political reasons and explores if the political misuse of the legal norm of R2P could be prevented. The method for research is the legal dogmatic method in combination with IR realist theory for analysis. Legal history of R2P, the legal framework and de lege lata of R2P, use of legal and political doctrine, and three examples of R2P-implemention, Georgia, Libya and Syria, are analysed with the aim of elaborating on how the misuse of R2P could be prevented, de lege ferenda. This thesis argues that the political misuse of R2P could be prevented long-term. Prevention should ideally be achieved by broadening the legal normative scope of R2P by prohibiting the use of R2P for individual political aims, and by including mechanisms of accountability within that legal scope. Exactly how that should be performed is a question for further legal deliberation and research. In addition, as many other scholars have already done, this research recommend a reinvention of the decision-making process in the UN SC because of the obstacles its VETO-regime poses in making interventions in the name of R2P.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to investigate how the syllabuses of religious education have changed from 1970–2011. To do this the following questions were answered: How have the syllabuses of religious education changed from 1970–2011? What has been removed and what has been added? How have the training course objectives changed? How has the content of the syllabuses changed? The method used in this essay is content analysis. The results of this essay show that the content of the syllabuses has not changed, although it is now described in further detail. The modern syllabuses are far more detailed then the oldest syllabus. One conclusion was that Christianity was the only expressly named religion.

The Nonracist Racist: A Discursive Psychology Approach to Anti-immigration Sentiment in Sweden2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Immigration is one of the effects, one of the symptoms of the ill-functioning and outdated machine that is the elite. Immigration and asylum-seeking have been frequent topics in public debates for years. The number of refugees making their way from war-torn regions of the world to Sweden makes the citizen versus asylum-seeker dichotomy highly relevant for social psychology research about discursively constituted identities. That is to say: how social-categorizations, emotions and attitudes are created in text and talk. Today, public opinion is largely produced online, this makes it possible to explore the motivations, strategies and goals of “the nonracist racist” on Facebook. This study utilizes a dual-edged approach in that coding is done both from an inductive- and a deductive direction. It adheres to a discursive psychology approach and follows Potter and Edward’s (2001) situated, action-oriented and constructed features of discourse. These theoretical features inform the deductive coding and are contextualized using Sakki and Pettersson’s (2016) three representation of otherness with subsequent six discourses produced by the populist radical right.

Findings indicate that cultural comparison constructing cultural incompatibility is the main rhetorical resource for constructing the citizen versus asylum-seeker dichotomy. However, this dichotomy is not the most dominant “us and them” construction by the “nonracist racist”. “The elite versus the people” is the most common “us and them” construction. It carries significant weight that the seemingly unfiltered expressions of hatred on anti-immigration pages on Facebook are more concerned with what “we” are doing wrong rather than what is wrong with any “deviant others”. It is more about an internal clash of moral compasses than it is about a supposed clash of civilizations. Along with the occasioned feature of discourse, this partly explains why anti-immigration advocates for example position themselves as victims or defenders.

Training military and United Nations peacekeepers in the protection of children in armed conflict: The changing approach of Save the Children Sweden in training military personnel relating to developments in the United Nations child protection discourse2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main objective of this paper is to study the developments in the UN discourse on child protection in armed conflict during the period 2000-2011, and whether changes in this discourse has affected Save the Children Sweden’s approach to training military and UN peacekeepers. The developments in the UN discourse have been studied based on relevant UN resolutions and decisions, and a comparative analysis has been made of two Save the Children Sweden trainings from 2000 and 2011 respectively. The theoretical framework for analysis of the UN discourse and content of the trainings is based on the UN identified Six Grave Violations Against Children in Armed Conflict. The main findings include that in particular the UN Resolutions establishing a Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism on crimes against children in armed conflict, and its demands on UN entities to monitor and report on these violations, have had an impact on Save the Children Sweden’s approach to training. The Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism and related UN Resolutions have also had an impact on the set-up of UN peacekeeping missions and their obligations and in extension ECOWAS military entities. As such the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism has had a key influence on the international discourse on child protection in armed conflict.

Differently different?: – Changing the perception of ‘US & THEM’2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study uses a longitudinal case study approach to observe change in ‘US and THEM-thinking’. Its purpose is to increase awareness of identity processes among participants and to test if the Attitude-Behaviour-Context-Triangle (the ABC-triangle) may be a way to achieve that. The ABC-triangle is modified as an ‘identity-analysis tool’ rather than a ‘conflict-analysis tool’.               Aspects relating to recognition of multiple identity affiliations compared to singular-identity categorisation is of interest. The traditional identity theories suggest that high identity salience increase singular-identity categorisation and thereby increase positive emotions for ingroup and negative emotions for outgroup. This study is partly based on the social identity perspective but complements it with Thoits’ identity-accumulation hypothesis and Hogg’s uncertainty-identity theory. Hogg’s theory locates uncertainty reduction as a main contributor to singular-identity categorisation together with its’ implied negative consequences. Hogg’s solutions are located both in multiple identity affiliations, as do Thoits, and in perceived cognitive ability to deal with uncertainty. This study emphasises awareness of identity processes to be the single most important factor for decreasing negative views of ‘THEM’. Overlooked in the more dominant theories of this area, it finds that recognition of multiple identity affiliations influences the perceived singular-identity terms imposed by an ‘US and THEM-situation’. Thereby, challenging imposed identity-restrictions and perceived intergroup competition. Furthermore, it questions the theoretical importance given to identity salience in previous research and theories since high identity salience, in this case, does not equal a singular-identity categorisation or increase negative views of ‘others’.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze whether heteronormativity conditions human rights for LGBT persons in Burma, and how “normalization processes” affect and control whose lives, according to Judith Butlers theories, possesses human value. This is done through interpreting the framework of theories by Butler with methods of idea analysis and empirical interviews and research from Burma. Specially highlighted is how the compelling heteronormative social structure affects LGBT persons in Burma, and how the system, according to Butler, is based on the notion that bodies that are “abnormal” are not recognized, and therefore seen as less human and less worthy of human rights. The thesis critically reflects on how Butlers more theoretical reasoning is challenged by the research material. The three research questions are interrelated, in such a way that they all explore how we can understand the human rights situation in Burma for persons that identify as LGBT, based on Butler and queer theory ́s criticism of heteronormativity. The conclusion shows that widespread homo- and transphobia, laws about illegality, the police as frequent perpetrators of violence, (especially against transgender women and gay men) and lack of judicial authority to turn to, makes LGBT people into "anti-citizens" that are reduced to a body without "the right to have rights". Butler's theories have considerable relevance for the context, in her analyzes of who are recognized as human and what the consequences are for human dignity to be outside the heteronormative system. However, they are lacking both legal perspective and problematization of the patriarchal power system, perspectives which has a decisive impact on LGBT persons in Burma.
