    Abstract [en]

The scope of this master thesis is the scientific publishing at Uppsala University's Faculty of Arts. The aim of the thesis is to investigate publication patterns and publishing strategies. To investigate how the publication patterns of the faculty is structured and what priorities and considerations the researchers have regarding scientific publishing.

Furthermore, the aim is to compare these publishing strategies and publication patterns to incentives and selection principles of the bibliometric indicators in the performance based research funding systems on the national and local scale.

The thesis is based on the theories of disciplinary differences developed by Richard Whitley and Tony Becher and Paul R. Trowler. These theories suggest a framework based on organizational and sociological perspectives, that offers ways to explain differences in publication patterns between different scientific fields.

The study is based on two empirical studies of the faculty. A survey of the researchers publication patterns has been conducted, and publications that are registered in the local publication database has been analyzed.

Results from the study show that scientific journal articles, book chapters and monographs, are the most important publishing forms and occur at all departments at the faculty. Many respondents remarked that publication patterns are changing toward more international publishing and increased article publishing in scientific journals, which corresponds with the analysis of the actual publications.

Overall, the respondents rank their knowledge of the bibliometric indicators in the lower scale, while the respondents' publication strategies are in fact consistent with the incentives in the allocation models.

The selection principle of the local allocation model captures a larger share of the faculty’s publications in comparison to the national allocation model. However, results from the survey shows that there are significant differences at an institutional level, in how the local bibliometric quality indicator assess the respondents' most central and most respected publishing channels. The publishing channels of the Department of Literature have the lowest correlation and the highest correlations are found among respondents from the Department of Philosophy. The study also finds a correlation between the quality indicators’ assessment of the departments’ central publishing channels and the assessment of the departments' actual publications.

    Abstract [sv]

This master´s thesis in Library and Information Science examines reading promotion projects that has been executed in cooperation between libraries and sports clubs.  The purpose of this thesis is to examine why these projects are invested in, by both libraries and the sports clubs, and how the persons involved in them are thinking about reading and its purpose. Based on both the concept of cooperation and that of united collaborative actions, two projects are examined where the libraries has cooperated with SISU sport clubs, and that has been completed on two different places in Sweden. The method to collecting data was qualitative interviews with four librarians and three sports consultants from SISU. There are several focus points in this study, one of them is the perception of children and their reading, also known as their literacy. Another important aspect in the study is that regarding how the cooperation between these two different professional cultures has been completed and if differences has affected the projects.  The theoretical framework consists of the sociocultural theory developed by Roger Säljö as an overall perspective, and the concepts of teamwork, work dimensions and the professional object from the works of Lena Folkesson and Amira Sofie Sandin. The concept of childhood studies also plays an important part in the interpretation of the material, as well as the idea of sports and reading as opposites, against the background of research about history of reading.  Main results of the study shows that the librarians and sports consultants involved in the projects shared positive experiences, except for some initial skepticism from the sports clubs. Other interesting results are the approach to reading as a means to achieve focus for upcoming sport achievements. The projects have been executed with the hopes of reaching out with books to children in a different environment than the school, and thereby attract them to read more.  This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Att delta i förändring: En diskursanalytisk studie om användardelaktighet i bibliotek 2.0.2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study has been to find out what concepts of user participation exits in the theory formation of Library 2.0. The study has also investigated if theories about Library 2.0 have been affected by the practical experiences made by the implementations of Library 2.0 in library environments.

The source material consists of texts published in the international journals Library Review, Library Management, or Journal of Documentation, within the years of 2005-2011. The method used is the critical discourse analysis, mostly inspired by Norman Fairclough.  The critical discourse analysis is different from the discourse analysis since it acknowledge the ability of changes. Thus, this study focus more on processes of change than other discourse analysis within the field of LIS (Library and Information Science).

Four discourses were found in the selected source material – the Social Plurality Discourse, the IT- Pedagogical Discourse, the Market Discourse and the Expert Discourse. A positive view of user participation in library activities was found in the first three of these, even if the Social Plurality Discourse often presented a critical view on the technological emphasis in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse has a negative approach to user participation in general, and especially to user tagging functions in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse is the most common in the texts published in 2011 and often uses arguments based on practical experiences that show that the users, so far, have not participated in Library 2.0-services. These arguments have the potential to cause change in the discourse practice of the other discourses here presented. However, the frame of this study is to narrow to evaluate if such a change has actually taken place.

The study also shows that the different discourses often have different meanings about what the user wants and needs. There might be a risk that the position “user” is being exploited to legitimate the mission that each discourse claims to be the most important for the library.

With a little help from my friends: Gender and intimacy in two friendship research projects2016Inngår i: LIR.journal, E-ISSN 2001-2489, nr 7, s. 55-73Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Friendship is an undertheorized but increasingly important relationship in late modernity. In this article, the authors present findings from two ongoing research projects about friendship, gender and age in contemporary Sweden. They argue that discourses about gender and friendship are very relevant for how friendship is conceptualized both among men and women, but that the well-known ideas about men’s inability and women’s capacity to be close friends ought to be problematized further, from feminist perspectives. Furthermore, they discuss friendships practices, problematizing the frequent equation of friendship and “deep”, intimate dialogues. Intimate dialogues are important but may overshadow other friendship practices, like various kinds of support, but the authors show that support is negotiated in relation to ideas of ideal friendship, permeated by reciprocity and equality. The authors call for further feminist research about friendship, arguing that a feminist perspective can destabilize gendered dichotomies and make it possible to problematize power relations, vulnerabilities and exclusions in friendships.

Indoor hygrothermal condition and user satisfaction in naturally ventilated historic houses in temperate humid continental climate around the Baltic Sea2016Inngår i: Architectural Science Review, ISSN 0003-8628, E-ISSN 1758-9622, Vol. 59, nr 1, s. 53-67Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Indoor climate and user satisfaction were analysed by field measurement and a questionnaire in 67 traditional rural houses in Estonia, Finland and Sweden. Our findings showed that the indoor climate in all the investigated historic rural houses needs improvement. The room temperature was mainly too low during winter. Leaky houses had also a larger vertical temperature difference. The relative humidity in the unheated and periodically heated houses was high during winter and caused risk for mould growth in 17% of all houses and 33% of unheated houses. Significant differences of indoor humidity loads in different houses were revealed depending on the living density and usage profile. During the winter period, the design value of moisture excess was 4-5g/m(3) and the average moisture load was 2-3.5g/m(3). The indoor humidity load in historic houses was similar to that in modern houses. The results of the questionnaire showed that main problems were related to unstable or too low temperatures. At the same time, inhabitants rated the overall indoor climate as healthy and no statistically important relations were found between average indoor temperature and complaints about too cold or too warm indoor temperatures.

Renovation alternatives to improve energy performance of historic rural houses in the Baltic Sea region2014Inngår i: Energy and Buildings, ISSN 0378-7788, E-ISSN 1872-6178, Vol. 77, s. 58-66Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyses renovation alternatives to improve energy performance of historic rural houses in three countries (Estonia, Finland, Sweden) in the Baltic Sea region (cold climate). The study was conducted by a combination of field measurements and simulations. Indoor climate, typical houses and structures as well as the current condition and need for renovation were determined by field measurements. Based on field measurements, indoor climate and energy simulation models were validated and used to calculate energy use for different renovation measures. Energy renovation packages were calculated for different scenarios (minimal influence on the appearance of the house, improvement of thermal comfort, improvement of building service systems) for different energy saving levels. The analysis showed that the improvement of building service systems and the energy source holds the largest energy saving potential. The building envelope of old rural houses needs improvement also due to high thermal transmittance and air leakage. The insulation of the external wall has the largest single energy saving potential of the building's envelope. The results show how energy savings depend on energy saving targets, typology of the building, thermal transmittance of original structures, and building service systems. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Konsten att avstå: Framställningar av åldrande och visdom i västeuropeisk litteratur från Cicero till Fredrika Bremer2009Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study discusses the tradition of ideal ageing, which emphasizes life-long virtue as an avenue to wisdom. In line with this tradition the senior members of society have been expected to take charge of and to organize their withdrawal from their social engagements, make themselves available to the younger generations needs without (openly) wanting to control them, and impart traditions without insisting that everything remain unchanged. Women have not been excluded from this tradition, but they have figured more in the margin. This is especially noticeable in the popular image of the ideal ageing man as a king in command of himself (but only in exceptional cases also in command of others).

The tradition of ideal ageing emerged during antiquity. Socrates held a central position in the formation of this set of values, Cicero’s De Senectute is a prototype of positive examples of ideal ageing, and Seneca’s texts on old age became, at the time, a model for how deterrent examples function as warnings to others. Traces of this tradition can, for example, be found in Shakespeare’s King Lear, and in texts by and about the ageing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the tradition of ideal ageing in Swedish literature dominated the portrayals of the relationship between young and old, especially in texts by Esaias Tegnér, Erik Gustaf Geijer, and Fredrika Bremer, who all wrote at a time when a new national ideology was emerging. Some of these writers though did attempt to break with the tradition by portraying themselves in old age as passionate and perpetually young. This shows the importance of studying how individual writers, instead of regarding the tradition of ideal ageing only as a limiting norm or discourse, have used the tradition in accordance with their own interests and perspectives.

Vad betyder läsfrämjande?: En kvalitativ studie över det läsfrämjande begreppets narrativa uppbyggnad på svenska folkbibliotek.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this master thesis is to examine the Swedish term for reading promotion, läsfrämjande, and gain a greater understanding for the meanings inherent in the word. To do this, narrative theory in the form if Harding's typology of six different types of narratives arranged on a scale from general to particular has been used for the analysis. The study focuses on librarians that work with children and young adults in public libraries and their rela-tionships with reading promotion. On the surface the Swedish word for reading promotion is simple, but exam-ined closely it becomes apparent that it is in fact multifaceted. The word consists of many different narratives that interact and in different ways change and affect each other. This study has identified five different types of collective narratives connected to the word läsfrämjande. These are the democratic narrative, the narrative of qualitative litterateur, reading for the soul, the enabling narrative and the literacy narrative. Together with the other types of narratives these form the basis of the personal narrative the librarians form around their reading promotion work and the word läsfrämjande. The personal narrative connected to the word will always be unique to the individual librarian, and it is be-cause of this that the word is so hard to define. The meaning will differ in small ways between different people, but because the personal narratives are built from the same collective narratives there will appear to be consensus in the meaning. This study has been produced as a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

    A Defence of the Asymmetry in Population Ethics2012Inngår i: Res Publica, ISSN 1356-4765, E-ISSN 1572-8692, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 145-157Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A common intuition is that there is a moral difference between ‘making people happy’ and ‘making happy people.’ This intuition, often referred to as ‘the Asymmetry,’ has, however, been criticized on the grounds that it is incoherent. Why is there, for instance, not a corresponding difference between ‘making people unhappy’ and ‘making unhappy people’? I argue that the intuition faces several difficulties but that these can be met by introducing a certain kind of reason that is favouring but non-requiring. It is argued that there are structural similarities between the asymmetry and moral options and that the asymmetry can be defended as an instance of a moral option.

    Bad art and good taste2018Inngår i: Journal of Value Inquiry, ISSN 0022-5363, E-ISSN 1573-0492, Vol. 53, nr 1, s. 145-154Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aesthetic value and good taste usually go hand in hand. A person with good taste is, typically, someone who appreciates things which exhibit some aesthetic quality or excellence. However, in ordinary life it is commonplace that we indulge in things which are lacking in aesthetic value. For example, we might prefer to watch Days of Our Lives rather than The Wire, or to read a bad crime novel rather than good poetry.

It is tempting to draw the conclusion that we are making a mistake, and lacking good taste, when our aesthetic attitudes do not match up against the aesthetic value of the things we prefer. However, this conclusion may be too quick. It has recently been argued by John Dyck and Matt Johnson1 that appreciating bad art—art which lack aesthetically good making features or whose bad making features clearly outweigh its good making ones—isn’t always inappropriate. In this paper I will argue that while there might be a case to be made for this claim, the problem which Dyck and Johnson identify is much more general and that their proposed solution can at best be a partial one.

Harm, Benefit, and Non-Identity2013Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis in an invistigation into the concept of "harm" and its moral relevance. A common view is that an analysis of harm should include a counterfactual condition: an act harms a person iff it makes that person worse off. A common objection to the moral relevance of harm, thus understood, is the non-identity problem.

This thesis criticises the counterfactual condition, argues for an alternative analysis and that harm plays two important normative roles.

The main ground for rejecting the counterfactual condition is that it has unacceptable consequences in cases of overdetermination and pre-emption. Several modifications to the condition are considered but all fail to solve this problem.

According to the alternative analysis to do harm is to perform an act which (1) is responsible for the obtaining of a state of affairs which (2) makes a person’s life go worse. It is argued that (1) should be understood in terms of counterfactual dependence. This claim is defended against counterexamples based on redundant causation. An analysis of (2) is also provided using the notion of a well-being function. It is argued that by introducing this notion it is possible to analyse contributive value without making use of counterfactual comparisons and to solve the non-identity problem.

Regarding the normative importance of harm, a popular intuition is that there is an asymmetry in our obligations to future people: that a person would have a life worth living were she to exist is not a reason in favour of creating that person while that a person would have a life not worth living is a reason against creating that person. It is argued that the asymmetry can be classified as a moral option grounded in autonomy. Central to this defence is the suggestion that harm is relevant to understanding autonomy. Autonomy involves partly the freedom to pursue one’s own aims as long as one does no harm.

    The harmlessness of existence2017Inngår i: Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, ISSN 1386-2820, E-ISSN 1572-8447, s. 1-12Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Can existence benefit or harm a person? I argue that it cannot. In order for existence to harm a person it has to be the case that existence is worse for the person than never existing. This claim could only be true if it is understood as a claim about the actual, extrinsic value of existence for a person. However, understanding harm (and benefit) in terms of actual extrinsic value comes at the cost of depriving benefits and harms of their normative relevance. I show that a person who is guided by promoting actual extrinsic value can face situations where an outcome is extrinsically better for her but where the same outcome would be extrinsically worse for her were it to obtain. A person who is guided by promoting extrinsic value will in such situations not be able to deliberate about what she should do, prudentially or morally. I conclude that extrinsic value is therefore not something we should be guided by when deliberating about what we should do, and that if harm and benefit is understood in terms of extrinsic value, then we should not be guided by these notions either.

    Abstract [en]

According to “the asymmetry”, the fact that a future person would have a life not worth living counts against bringing that person into existence but the fact that a future person would have a life worth living does not count in favour of bringing that person into existence. While this asymmetry seems intuitive, it is also puzzling: if we think that it is of moral importance to prevent people from living lives not worth living, shouldn’t we also that it is of moral importance to create people with lives worth living? Melinda Roberts has suggested a view, “Variabilism”, which she argues solves this problem. I argue that Variabilism fails as a solution to the asymmetry. First, Variabilism relies on a particular distinction between gains and losses which is at least as puzzling as the asymmetry itself. Second, in some cases Variabilism is incompatible with the asymmetry. In these cases, the fact that a person would have a life worth living does count in favour of creating her.

    Abstract [en]

In this article we distinguish two versions of the non-identity problem: one involving positive well-being and one involving negative well-being. Intuitively, there seems to be a difference between the two versions of the problem. In the negative case it is clear that one ought to cause the better-off person to exist. However, it has recently been suggested that this is not so in the positive case. We argue that such an asymmetrical treatment of the two versions should be rejected and that this is evidence against views according to which it is permissible to cause the less well-off person to exist in the positive non-identity case.

Animation through Body Language: A study using the fictional character Mokhtar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Learning to read body language is something we do throughout our whole life. It is a complex non-verbal language that can express more than words. In this study we investigate the possibility to use only body language to portray emotions to the viewer. In a background of a game project we have used a character that has his face covered, therefore, facial expression is not visible during the online survey, which we used as a method for our investigation. As a foundation we have created four character animations to portray anger, frustration, exhaustion and hurt. To find the answer if it is possible to recognize those five emotions in the character animations survey, participants were obligated to name the emotion expressed on each of the video clips. The results of this study show that the characters body language could be sufficient to portray those five emotions. However, it was concluded that body language could be enough to represent the character's emotional state to the viewer; but by including facial expressions we could help to portray the emotion even further.

Nina Simone In Concert: Identifying Activism and Self-awareness Through Interactive Qualities2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The singer and activist Nina Simone played a crucial role in the political and musical outcome of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. This thesis aims to assess how Simone’s activism and self-awareness are expressed through interactive qualities by doing a case study of the performances of “Go Limp” and “Mississippi Goddam” on the live album In Concert. A relational approach has been suggested, where the focus has been on sociological elements of musical encounter such as interaction, rather than the aesthetical. Searching within four dimensions of social relations within which culture is enacted (division of labor, relations of power, tuning in and cultural embeddedness), constructed by sociologist of culture William G. Roy, shows that musical encounter is highly dependent of the social relations within which it manifests. Expressing social strategies such as irony, sing-along and humor as interactive methods shows that the performances of “Go Limp” and “Mississippi Goddam” were not solely defined by their composition and musical content, but also by how they were performed.

Seeking beyond aesthetical features on the album In Concert have shown that the interactive qualities within the performances of “Go Limp” and “Mississippi Goddam” are highly dependent of and defined by Simone’s activism and self-awareness.

Anfal. Vittnesmål från irakiska Kurdistan: En guide till Omar Sheikhmous arkiv upprättad av Minoo Alinia2011Annet (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims at explaining how the cultural identity of Kurds has changed in regard to patriotism and ethnonationalism in connection with the Arab Spring and the emergence of IS/Da’ish in Syria and Iraq. The main purpose of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind the growth of ethnonationalism among Kurds under the threat of armed conflict. The study’s main theoretical arguments rests upon a base of previous anthropological research made on the subjects nationalism and identity, and is additionally joined by theoretical arguments on ethnicity from the field of peace and conflict studies. By examining critical moments in the past and present history of Kurdish ethnonationalism as well as investigating the use of symbols representing Kurdish identity, I conclude that the emergence of the Arab Spring and the rise of IS/Da’ish has boosted Kurdish identity in regard to patriotism and ethnonationalism. Nonetheless, further research might still have to be made in order to completely understand the possibly even more detailed mechanisms behind the effects of conflicts, as well as other surrounding factors, on identity, patriotism and ethnonationalism.

Establishing a Culture of Migration: The Spatial, Economic, and Social Planning of Philippine-Korean Labour Migration2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 poäng / 45 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Since the second half of the 20th century the Philippines have supplied the world with migrant workers. Today, almost one tenth of the population is residing abroad. Labour migration has become an important source of revenue to both state and private actors through remittances, for the Philippines, and a source of cheap labour battling labour shortage, in the receiving countries. Today, the global labour market is a distinct and important part of what we call globalisation. This is portrayed in this thesis through the lens of Philippine-Korean labour migration.

The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the emergence of migrants as a commodity for export, the institutionalised creation of migrants, the normalisation of labour migration, and containment of migrants through legal and spatial constraints, in Manila and in Seoul.

This thesis look at the ways in which labour migration, as an economic policy, is internalised and transformed into a culture of migration. I argue that the effects of a culture of migration is felt not just by the labour migrants themselves, but also by their families and by the Philippines as a whole. As such, the reliance on remittances as a source of income has transformed domestic and global infrastructures as well as norms and social behaviour. Moreover, this thesis aims to add to the discussion on migration and remittances by exploring social dimensions and consequences of the globalisation of the labour market.
