    Abstract [en]

    The wave energy converter developed at Uppsala University (Uppsala, Sweden) consists of a linear generator placed on the seabed and driven by the motion of a buoy on the water surface. The buoy is connected to the moving part of the linear generator, the translator, which is made of ferrite magnets. The translator moves vertically inducing voltage in the windings of a fixed component, the so-called stator. The energy conversion of the linear generator is affected by the sea state and by variations of mean sea level. The sea state influences the speed and the stroke length of the translator, while the variation of tidal level shifts the average position of the translator with respect to the center of the stator. The aim of this study is to evaluate the energy absorption of the wave energy converter at different locations around the world. This goal is achieved by developing a hydromechanic model which analyses the optimum generator damping factor for different wave climates and the power absorbed by the generator, given a fixed geometry of the buoy and a fixed stroke length of the translator. Economic considerations regarding the optimization of the damping factor are included within the paper. The results suggest a nominal damping factor and show the power absorption losses at various locations, each of them characterized by a different wave climate and tidal range. The power losses reach up to 67% and in many locations a tidal compensation system, included in the design of the wave energy converter, is strongly motivated.

    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis is a case study, in the experience industry, of prototypes in the early stage of the innovation process – the front end of innovation. The innovation is augmented reality (AR) that adds digital made graphics or information in the user's environment. To answer the research questions and to fulfill the purpose of this thesis, which is to gain an understanding of the role of a prototype in an innovation process, a prototype was created. The designing tools used for developing the prototype were brainstorming and storyboarding. The prototype presents a concept of using AR-glasses at an ice hockey venue. A workshop was carried out for evaluating the finished prototype, using the "thinking hats"-method. The conclusion of this study is that a prototype can be used as a starting point for further creativity by creating a common perspective of a technology at the front end of innovation. Further on, it was discovered that a prototype can be good to use earlier in their innovation process, to accelerate the process. In the process of designing the prototype, it was shown that the creation is iterative, rather than linear.

    Abstract [en]

    The mechanical and magnetic properties of the newly discovered MAB-phase class of materials based upon AlFe2B2 were investigated. The samples were synthesised from stoichiometric amounts of all constituent elements. X-ray diffraction shows that the main phase is orthorhombic with an elongated b-axis, similar to AlFe2B2. The low hardness and visual inspection of the samples after deformation indicate that these compounds are deformed via a delamination process. When substituting iron in AlFe2B2 with manganese, the magnetism in the system goes from being ferro- to antiferromagnetic via a disordered ferrimagnetic phase exhibited by AlFeMnB2. Density functional theory calculations indicate a weakening of the magnetic interactions among the transitions metal ions as iron is substituted by manganese in AlFe2B2. The Mn-Mn exchange interactions in AlMn2B2 are found to be very small.

Moreover, customers and publicare more aware of the sustainable products and services. Customerpreferences have started to incline towards the use of eco-friendly productsand services. A shift from traditional innovation to eco-innovation isnecessary for businesses to meet the environmental objectives andcompanies must recognize the importance of eco-innovation andenvironmental practices. This study aims to identify and analyse the driversand barriers for the adoption of eco-innovation in the offshore fish farmingindustry.Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries in the food sector andis expected to play a vital role in global food supply. In this study theidentification of drivers and barriers of eco-innovation were drawn byanalysing the empirical data using both institutional and resource-basedtheories. Findings suggest that stringent regulations and policies,competition, market demand, customer demand, and corporate image arethe institutional drivers, while cost-savings, partnerships, technological

    improvements and R&D are the resource-based drivers for adoption of eco-innovation in offshore fish farming industry. Technological barriers, financial barriers, organizational and management barriers, natural andinfrastructural barriers are the main barriers for adoption of eco-innovationin offshore fish farming industry.

    Abstract [en]

    The rise of antibiotic resistance and the difficulty in the procurement of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used in the manufacturing reduce the availability of antibiotics in Sweden. The main objective of the study is to explore the APIs market in India and analyze the major suppliers to support the stable production of antibiotics which suffer from shortage in the Swedish market.

     

    This research is concerned with the API supply stage concerning the rest of the antibiotic supply chain. It includes the structure of the local industries and the strategies adopted by the leading players. In this regard, the relevant literature on pharmaceutical supply chains and strategy and on other initiatives to combat antibiotic resistance are referred with the motive to establish a theoretical base for the practical findings. 

     

    The interviews with the supply manager of major API suppliers have conducted in India and various reports on APIs suppliers are studied. The challenges in the supply and export of APIs are explained in the interviews. The current players and government initiatives to promote the export of APIs help to understand both internal and external problems related to the export of APIs.  

     

    The thesis is concluded with the recommendations of Indian APIs producers that can be considered by the pharmaceutical companies producing antibiotics to establish a reliable and robust supply chain between them.

    Abstract [en]

    Bravida is one of Scandinavia's leading suppliers of technical installations and services. According to Bravida an installer loses around 35 per cent of their daily work. It’s the time aspect that’s going to be examined in this thesis. The purpose of this thesis is that the student in question is to investigate the activities of the installers that works with this project, identifying where and how time losses occur and come up with suggestions for improvement.

    Methods used in this work is literature studies, observational studies and interviews. When it comes to the theory, the student in question chose to focus on Lean production, communication and utilities like 5S, because the student believes that it covers the areas that’s going to be explored. Lean production has been used for a long time in many different industries to reduce waste and make the process work more effective. The construction industry has pioneered the use of Lean production lately. Given that the construction industry is based on relationships between participants results in making communications a big part of the constructionprojects. The conclusion of this thesis was that problems always occur in projects, both the leading installer and installers run into problems in projects. The underlying causes of the problems is poor communication, problems with drawings and lack of information about the projects. These solutions were developed to eliminate these problems. Communication problems can be improved by making the leading installer a part of the planning phase, also making sure that the information at the “coordination meetings” is clear and understandable in a way that makes it possible for the leading installers to easily solve the problems.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper aims at increasing the understanding of construction partnering and relationships in project marketing by analyzing the impact of previous relationships among project stakeholders on the choice of partnering and of partners. Based on a conceptual framework combining the insights of the Industrial Network Approach with the model of project co-development proposed by Crespin-Mazet and Ghauri (2007), the paper analyzes a focal partnering project and its connections to other projects. It concludes that the context of the relationships seems to influence the customer's selection of partnering and partners. The paper's contributions address the relative importance of the project's functional challenge and relational congruence in the project network on the customer's procurement choice. For a first partnering agreement, this choice seems primarily influenced by the project's functional challenge while the subsequent choice of partners relies on high relational congruence. Once a positive experience of project partnering gained, the customer's choice seems primarily influenced by the relational congruence in the project network so as to harvest previous investments (resource adaptations) made in their relationship with a given partner. The paper highlights several contributions to the construction partnering literature and project marketing literature.

    The current transportation infrastructure in most cities and municipalities is not designed to cope with the continually increasing volume of traffic, especially during rush hours. Furthermore, in many cases, the increasing pressure has not yet been adequately compensated by sufficient expansion. The dynamic nature of this problem makes it very challenging to solve. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to investigate the causes and effects and their dynamics of the increasing strain on transportation infrastructure in suburban municipalities. This research is necessary in order to determine what needs to be changed to reduce traffic congestion effectively. Moreover, this study assesses the expectations of commuters regarding mobility. It is essential to take their opinions into account, as they are a significant cause of traffic congestion. Therefore, they need to accept any implemented solution in order to ensure a high adoption rate. In the process, the dynamics of the system and the opinions of commuters result in conceptual solutions aimed at improving the traffic situation in the long term.

     

    The research involved conducting a single case study in a suburban municipality of the German city of Munich. In the course of this research, primary data was collected by means of a commuter survey and secondary data was also provided from an existing household survey. Moreover, empirical data was collected through a literature review as well as from numerous recognised online sources. The causes and effects of traffic dynamics were analysed by considering traffic as a system using Systems Thinking and System Dynamics methodology. The interrelated variables were visualised by creating a Causal Loop Diagram and drawing conclusions from it. In addition, conceptual solutions were developed by reviewing the works of previous researchers and taking into account the results from the System Dynamics analysis. The results of the commuter survey also played a crucial role in ascertaining the commuting habits and expectations of commuters regarding the transportation infrastructure.

     

    The analysis of the Causal Loop Diagram revealed that in order to reduce traffic congestion, road expansion alone is not a viable solution due to rebound effects, which eventually result in increased car use and hence more traffic congestion. Therefore, in order to solve the problem in the long term, car use needs to be reduced to a significant degree. This can be achieved by implementing various solutions to nudge people towards using alternative modes of transport. Various pricing techniques such as free public transport are a possible method of approaching this topic. Furthermore, improving public transportation services and infrastructure using digitalisation and centralising various alternative modes of transport are among a number of appropriate ways of effectively reducing the traffic congestion problematic studied in this project. Hereby, the method of Change Management, usually used within organisations, can be applied to change the behaviour of society.

    This thesis has been performed at International Aluminum Casting AB in Eskilstuna,Sweden.

    International Aluminum Casting is currently working with a number of improvementsin their production in order to achieve their vision of being the leading aluminum foundry in Sweden. As a step in their improvement efforts, focus was directed ondeveloping the company's fixtures for machining.

    Efforts were focused on two main objectives: to develop a complete proposal on afixture which leads to a more rational use of an assigned part and also form general design advice for development of fixtures in the future.

    During the work progress, discussions have been made with experts at International Aluminum Casting within the field of fixture design. The objective was to obtain sufficient knowledge about the underlying problems with the current fixture for the part. At this stage of the thesis, a number of essential criteria for fixture design were produced. Information and inspiration were obtained by examining the company’s currently developed fixtures.

    After gathering the necessary information the process of developing three different fixture concepts started. In order to produce these three drafts a couple of tools to form concepts where used and in that brainstorming played a crucial role. To determine which of these concepts who had the greatest potential the PUGH-method where used and the best concept could be determined. The starting point to develop the best concept was based on the criteria previously mentioned for designing fixtures.

    The result of this thesis became a fixture which has a capacity to fit six details instead of the previous four, which gives it an advantage from a manufacturing standpoint. The developed fixture has also enabled a faster production time for the part itself because the machine movements in the manufacturing process have been reduced. These movements manifest itself most clearly in tool changes and rotations of the fixture in the machining process. A shorter processing time resulting in reduced manufacturing costs. The fastening features of the part in the fixture have been improved, resulting in a simpler and a better work environment for the operator.

    The study has the intention to identify factors that prevent Organization X from succeeding with 5S as well as establish guidelines for reimplementation of the working method. Collected materials, through qualitative methods within phenomenological research framework, demonstrate that Organization X used to have good level of 5S in the organization. Maintaining this level has how ever been neglected during recent years. Current work in 5S is inadequate and several employees have requested structure and orderliness at the work place. Analyzation of differences between past and present work of 5S as well as analysing the difference between the employees’ expectations and Organization X promises of 5S in the organization and barriers affecting the accomplishment of 5S were identified. The identified barriers are: lack of top management commitment and requirement, lack of goals, vision and strategy, lack of education and training, inadequate leadership, resource shortages for improvement work, lack of follow-up and revision, unclear ownership responsibility and role allocation as well as lack of improvement process. A performed cultural analysis shows a rational organizational culture in Organization X which strives for stability and rapid short term changes. The organizational culture demonstrates a consonance with the current 5S-work, which may mean a resistance for change. An important activity to focus on in future reimplementation of 5S is to identify norms, values and incentive which have ability to affect drive forces to foster change. Organization X should focus on educating the top managers and the employees in 5S as well as initiating and follow up the implementation. The last implementation of 5S was successful. Based on the result of the previous implementation, Organization X could use previous strategy for reimplementation based on organizational experience. The chosen strategy for reimplementation of 5S should be adapted to Organization X words of value and business. Follow-ups and revisions as well as constructing an improvement process are important activities for 5S anchoring in the organization. The activities contribute to the cultural change 5S requires for successful reimplementation.

    The aim of this study is to examine the feasibility of the multichannel strategy in a B2B complex product context through an in-depth case study on ABB control systems. Firstly, the study focused on investigating the channel strategy for the current ABB control systems. The channel structure and sales cycle have been identified. Secondly, the study identified the challenges which have existed in the channels for ABB control systems. Channel conflicts and lack of channel integration have been recognized as the major challenges. Finally, the thesis proposed improvement suggestions on how to reduce channel conflicts and increase channel integrations for ABB control systems.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper explores the issue of movement through different, usually disparate, digital environments and the relation to market communications, specifically branding. This inquiry represents the intersection between digital literary theory, new media studies, marketing communication and finally branding.

     

    The use of “digital channels” in marketing communications, and particularly branding, has during the last decade almost fully transformed the so-called “marketing mix” (Boden 1964), i.e. the portfolio of marketing strategies and communication channels used by a particular organisation, of marketing communication departments, but also recast the very organisation of these departments. Practically all consumer-oriented companies/organisation have now digital marketing departments, and many have during the last few years also dedicated staff for the strategic use of social media (D'Angelo 2010) by means of e.g. social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter or Google+. Moreover, social media which is primarily (and has been historically) seen as a business-to-consumer tool has recently also been popularised by business-to-business companies/organisations that are targeting niche audiences of industry professionals predominantly as part of CRM strategies or support services. This development adds yet another layer on top of the already crowded media landscape – a professional/work-related dimension in addition to the usually pre-existing personal/private communication sphere, which is expressed most vividly with services such as LinkedIn (“a professional network service”) focused on a more official and professional networking separated from the private sphere, or in other services such as Facebook or Google+ whose broader social networking focus frequently generates a delicate and blurry mix of private and public/professional life.

     

    The migration of users/readers from one digital communication sphere to another is an escalating challenge for market communication managers as communication strategies must adapt to the growing bifurcation of the contemporary media and communication landscape (Smith, Coyle, Lightfoot, & Scott 2007). In essence, marketing communication must now follow every step of the diverse and fickle media uses of the consumer, which are changing at an ever-accelerating pace. According to some sources the number of advertising messages an average consumer in the USA is daily exposed to 500 to 1000 commercial messages (Arens, Weigold, & Arens 2010). A new smartphone “app” (software application for smartphones) can grow explosively, as illustrated by the impressive popularity of the “location-based social network” Foursquare that in two years time has gathered more than 10 million users (Indvik 2011) – which in terms of audience makes it more popular than the third biggest newspaper in the world. The paramount question now becomes: how do companies/organisations, and more specifically brands, communicate in this dynamically expanding communication landscape?

     

    Since approximately a decade we are seeing the rise of a new field of “digital branding” that is using elements from the fields of new media, word-of-mouth marketing, online communities, game design, entrepreneurship, user interface design and others, and combines these dimensions with “traditional offline” branding theories to create an integrated approach to the challenges of the modern communication realm – a so-called Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) approach (Pickton & Broderick 2001). Furthermore, the global nature of Internet adds further complexity by introducing a significantly more tangible cross-cultural dimension where centralised communication has to be adapted to local markets while still being accessible from every country in the world (Hermeking 2005).

     

    How do we theoretically interpret communication across this cultural, technological and communication-based fragmentation of the marketing communications sphere – and more importantly: how is communication coordinated cohesively across this multitude of channels? A common way, as well based on industry practice (Revis 2012), is the notion of storytelling, which is presented as an eclectic approach to multi-channel communication, where “stories” and “narratives” are told in a distributed way (Alexander 2011 ; Meadows 2003 ; Qiongli 2006 ; Smith et al. 2007). A mosaic of messages communicates aspects of the “overall picture” through various channels and those are later assembled into a cohesive message by the reader/consumer. This stems from the “narrative turn” in the social sciences (Atkinson & Delamont 2006 ; Berger & Quinney 2005) and particularly relevant, within organisation/management studies (Czarniawska-Joerges 2004), where narratives and personal accounts are used as the foundation for perceiving and even defining organisations and their internal and external dynamics.

     

    This paper will introduce an alternative and rewarding perspective based on a significantly more formal, literary and material framework: the perspective of digital space exploration. This is a perspective that posits the user/consumer/reader as moving and migrating through fragmented digital spaces. A prominent analysis of exploration of digital spaces has been put forth by Jenkins (Jenkins 2003) who defines the design of digital media/video games as a type of narrative architecture which can be divided into four ways of mapping narrative possibilities onto digital spaces: evocative spaces, enacting stories, embedded narratives and finally emergent narratives. Janet Murray, the most eminent proponent of digital media/cyberspace as interactive narratives, considers cyberspace to be enhanced by the spatial property characterised by its ability to represent navigable space (Murray 1997). Unlike “linear media” such as books and film, Murray claims that only digital environments can present space that users can move through, which is further elaborated by another digital narratologist Marie Laure-Ryan (Ryan 2001) who posits the spatiality of display as one of the major properties of digital media.

     

    This paper aims to explore the implications of spatial exploration as analytical framework for market communication through the contemporary fragmented digital media landscape.

    The construction industry is one of the industries where far too many people are injured every year and a dozen people perish in connection with their work. Preventing measures to reduce the number of accidents have taken great steps in recent years, but there is still much to be done to achieve the vision of zero deaths.This study investigates which injuries that occurs in the industry and if the work to counter them is enough. The aim with the report is to achieve greater awareness in order to inform policy that may hopefully put in place measures to increase safety at construction sites and clarify issues regarding the cause of accidents. To investigate this, a survey was conducted together with an interview study aimed at Sh bygg's employees where construction workers and people in leading positions participated. The studies show that the main problem areas are time shortages in projects and awareness of safety and the working environment. These problems cause many cuts and crush injuries as well as soft tissue injuries. To counter these problems, time schedules require space for deviations where sufficient requirements are set to ensure a safe workplace. Awareness about risks and consequences is also important in order to get those who work in production to change their attitude and behavior. The construction industry is man-dominated and has therefore acquired a macho culture that is not desirable from the working environment perspective. More women in the industry may be one step in counterbalancing the more macho-aspects of this culture through ushering in more gender-neutral ways of thinking and opinions, which may result in a greater care and concern for safety measures.A lot of work has already been done to improve the working environment by companies and organisations. An increased awareness of risks in combination with improved communication and more careful time frames is desirable to achieve the goal of zero incidents.

    The thesis is an examination of the methods that are appropriate and long-term choice to obtain clamping force and secure screw joints in production. The employer, Scania CV AB, transmission manufactures axle gears to all trucks produced in Södertälje. One of the most common assembly elements is screw joints, where the clamping force is essential to achieve a secure joint. Current methods to secure the joint is due much of the friction effect and is an indirect method to measure the clamping force. The clampforce accuracy becomes more widely with torque angle control. Scania is working with continuous improvements in order to always keephigh quality and customer focus and the purpose of this study is to evaluate the future means to secure the clamping force of screw joints to keep the best quality. Potential methods to be examined is ultrasound technology and gradient yield control and their accuracy compared to current method. The study also aims to examine the economic impact of deviations in production of axle gears.

    Scania already runs development projects in secure units for engine assembly and benchmarking in the enterprise is therefore one of the methods of investigation. The work consists of three parts where theory and experiment section aims to explain and prove the methods of securing screw joints and to advance the author on the subject. The second part is the economic study that seeks to demonstrate how much the current method costs Scania compared with investment costs for new methods. The final part is to analyze the new methods and results of the study and performed experiments.

    For Scania axle gear assembly and the selected unit does ultrasound method more accurate and direct measure the clamping force. It convinces the future of clamping force control as a method of securing screw joints. As the method gives a more reliable control of clamping force and may be for joints that are affected by subsidence ensure quality to customers. The ultrasonic method is a long termsolution for Scania critical joints and gives them the most accurate quality to compete with on the market.

    All manufacturing requires some form of quality control to be able to ensure that a product will meet the customers requirements. Volvo Construction Equipment AB has a TDI station, Test Delivery Inspection, for transmissions. They experience a lack of insight and knowledge of the tests that has been done and therefore the purpose of this project is to investigate and improve Volvo CE's test equipment for transmissions and its reliability. The aim is to provide improvement proposals to the organization as well as a plan for the implementation, follow-up and control of the process.

    The study is an improvement project and therefore the methodology Six Sigma and parts of the work process DMAIC are used to accomplish the study. The method is adapted for improvement projects and is primarily used by larger producing companies. For data collection, both quantitative and qualitative methods are used. These methods are; the use of existing data from the organization, brainstorming and two different MSA tests aimed at examining the machine and the human's influence on the process.

    Several quality tools were helpful when analyzing the results and the two factors that has the biggest impact on the test equipment's results is the impact from the human and the test equipment itself such as the variation of the test equipment. An initial approach to reducing the impact of these factors and thereby making the test equipment more reliable is to make sure that all routines are followed and ensure that the method for extracting data from the test equipment is right.

    The conclusions are that the tolerance limits needs to be checked again just because they are based on personal experience and the process can be controlled with statistical process control. To follow up on the results, the same tests can be performed repeatedly and compared with this project. The project can be described as a standardized working method for similar improvement projects and can also be applied to other processes.

    Crowdsourcing is an increasingly popular source of both ideas and funding. Crowdsourcing in a B2B context is less well understood and, as such, much of our discussion will highlight business-to-business crowdsourcing. More generally discussion will address crowdsourcing relative to innovation and technology development and customer relationship management. Examples will be used to derive a general roadmap, and to identify specific areas worthy of increased attention. The roadmap is developed as a six-stage approach that begins with task specification and concludes with management of inputs generated from crowd-sourcing efforts. The roadmap emphasizes on early stages in the overall innovation management activity that is related to development and specification of the task to be crowdsourced, the identification of the crowd, the creation of the environment to connect the crowdsourcer, the task and the crowd, motivation of the crowd, and actual activities in reaching the crowd. Managing the input from the crowd is regarded as a later stage in the overall innovation management but also as a focal point in the arguments for improving B2B crowdsourcing. In crowd selection processes this paper aims at classifying the crowd related to the closeness to the company requesting deliberate choices between employees, partners, prequalifying participants or the general crowd. Magnitude of insight, capability, expertise and volume is defined as critical to the outcome.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis describes the planning and development of a volume meter of pine and spruce cones. The product was designed and developed for Stigsjö Skog och Frö AB in Härnösand. It was developed taking into account a number of requirements set by the supervisor David Zetterlund. The main requirements were that the volume measurement would be fast and give accurate results. These are two requirements that are missing in today's volume measuring method which is very problematic for the company.

    The plant was visited several times in Härnösand, mainly to discuss the generated concepts with the supervisor and perform tests on the prototype. The supervisor has been involved and contributed important suggestions and comments.

     At the beginning we generated a number of different concepts. This was done in two phases of concept generation. In faze one; concepts were discussed after which the least suitable was removed. In phase two we also discussed the development prospects of the remaining concepts. Inspired by some of these concepts, a final concept was created for further development. The development of the chosen concept began with selecting and designing appropriate subcomponents. There after appropriate engineering materials were chosen. A series of tests were conducted on a prototype. There were also carried out finite element calculations of the subcomponents that were considered to be exposed to maximum stress state. The next step was to examine whether the finished product meets the set requirements. In conclusion and in view of the set cost limitations a study was carried out on how viable the solution is for the company.

    The investigations conducted showed that the final product met the set requirements. This applies particularly to the cost limitations, volume measurement accuracy and volume measurement speed. It was also produced full drawings with detailed CAD models. The product is therefore ready for production.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: Previous IMP research has shown that innovation benefits tend to gravitate across organisational, company and legal borders. However, OECD and EU policy assume that innovation investments will create benefits in close spatial relation to where these were made. The overall purpose of this paper is to consider how opportunities and obstacles of innovation appear from the perspective of: a national policy actor, its regional mediators and a policy supported and research-based firm engaged in innovation. A specific interest is directed to what interactive aspects that are considered by these actors; in the using, producing and developing settings.

    Design/methodology/approach: Influenced by the research question and theoretical point of departure the authors investigate what type of interfaces our focal actors recognise in the using, producing and developing settings. A total of 41 face-to-face and phone interviews focusing on each actor's approach were conducted; 23 interviews in order to investigate the policy side of innovation attempts, while 18 interviews have been performed in order to understand a single business actor's innovation approach.

    Findings: The study shows that both the national policy agency and the regional policy mediators primarily operate within a developing setting, and furthermore, applies a rather peculiar interpretation of proximity. As long as the developing setting of the innovation journey is in focus, with the task to transfer academic knowledge advances to commercial actors, the proximity aspect is rather easy to fulfil. However, as soon as the producing and using settings of the innovation is taken into consideration, the innovation, if it survives, will gravitate to a producing setting where it can contribute to investments in place.

    Originality/value: The study investigates the opportunities and obstacles of innovation; the spatial aspects included, and how these are considered by: a national policy agency, a regional mediator and a policy-supported innovating firm, in order to juxtapose the policy doctrine with the experience of the business actors such policy wishes to support.

    GEMS PET Systems AB manufactures a type of particle accelerator called cyclotron. A cyclotron accelerates charged particles in order to hit so-called targets. The acceleration takes place inside a vacuum chamber and currently BEVs or beam exit valves are used to maintain this vacuum during target maintenance. The problem with the BEVs are that they can become overheated during cyclotron use. The commissioner requested a detail made in one and the same part that houses all BEVs currently used. Additionally, suggestions for how the new part could be connected to a cooling device was requested. The commissioner wanted to use parts of a valve provided by a supplier. A prototype for the valve-housing was designed and ordered to test the compatibility between this new valve-housing and the parts from the supplier. The idea was to use some of the prototype’s features in the new detail. A concept generation was made for the new detail with tools like Brainstorming and SCAMPER. CAD proposals were created for the new detail according to the chosen concept, which was then shown to employees at GEMS PET Systems AB and they deemed that the concept was possible to realize. The prototype was not delivered before the project’s conclusion and could not be tested. Consequently, it is not possible to determine if the suggested concept is compatible with the parts from the supplier nor if it is able to maintain vacuum, but the proposed concept meet the other requirements set out in the specification.

    Abstract [en]

    St Eriks in Uppsala is a manufacturing company of various concrete products, e.g curb concretes stones. This study is about a production line that has become a low priority and needs improvement as the company wants to increase its production volume.

    The project's goal is to increase the production volume of the current production line by 50%. To achieve this, the study addressed the following problem formulation, which bottlenecks are in the production line? What improvement steps should be taken to achieve the set production targets? Should these improvements be achieved by creating productivity or purchasing productivity?

    The improvement solutions are obtained by means of a simulation study, which is a major part of the project. The main focus of the project is primarily: 1) Simulation (Discrete Even Simulation) of the current state and Model Validation 2) Identification of Bottlenecks 3) Improvement Suggestions to Enhance Production Volume Increase.

    The result shows that the production line must eliminate primarily two bottlenecks, filling and deformation in order to achieve the desired production volume. In order to get a more detailed result, an optimization has also been carried out. The optimization shows that some buffer capacities should be increased, including cure buffer and decrease in curing time.

    Indoor Energy is a company that works in the energy sector. It works through itsthree subsidiaries Indoor Energy Services, Indoor Energy Control and Indoor EnergyConsultants. Because of their comprehensive experience and offering of broad rangeof services they can contribute to integrated extensive solutions for their customers.

    Indoor Energy Control works with building management through control andregulation. This work is realigned by programmers and project managers. Working inthis area is complex and places a great demand on both technical innovation andprofessional project management.

    Due to the complexity of the work Indoor Energy Control has a hard time to get thenew employees to be independent in their work as a programmer. This problem hascreated a need to develop some kind of education for the newly recruited persons.The education will be through a new project called Indoor Energy Academy, whichshould be up and running by January 2013.

    This thesis is about Indoor Energy Academy and the problems concerning preparationand planning before the start of it. To aid me in the search for finding a properapproach to these aspects I have studied Japanese management philosophy (Lean) andused it as a basis to do interviews and an opinion poll. These two tools should helpme to find out about what people in the Indoor Energy company think is importantabout this education and how it should be done right.

    Abstract [en]

    There are presently a number of projects that aim to minimize the number of work related accidents on construction sites in Sweden. The industry has one of the highest number of accidents as well as the highest number of work related deaths. What causes these accidents varies and there are several action plans to overcome them. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether and, if so,how the social culture of construction sites could benefit from a more even gender distribution and how the number of work related accidents could be affected. The survey consists mainly of interviews. A literature studie and a poll have been conducted with the purpose of gaining background information as well as making more general conclusions regarding construction sites. The result shows that the employees who participated in thesurvey agree there is a macho culture on construction sites. However, whether or not this is a problem there are shared opinions. A majority of the employees, on the other hand, experience a difference in security mentality depending on gender, and by extension that the safety culture in the workplace would change if a more even gender distribution existed. Finally, further examination is recommended in the form of amore extensive interview study comprising of several projects.This study would generate a more detailed comparison and providea broader view of how the current situation stands. A statistical comparison of work related accidents would also be of interestas it would more clearly demonstrate any differences between projects with different gender segregation.

    This work aim to contribute to making constructions sites in Sweden safer. The purpose is achieved by focusing on the preventing work that is made during the planning phase. Therefore this work will result in recommendations on how  to better prevent work environment hazards and which risks are the hardest to identify. During the planning phase a work environment document is required to be established. These documents and the belonging risk analysis is the core of this work. The problem is identified thru qualitative interviews with four informants. All of the four informants shared the opinion about knowledge being inadequate in the planning stage. This is revealed in the work environment plan that often is copied from another project instead of being adapted for every unique project.

    To achieve a proper work environment plan a wide range of knowledge is required. This makes it hard for one person to carry out this work while also leading the projection since vast experience in work environment is needed. The result makes the foundation for the presented solutions. The solutions are that the project leader and BAS-P should be two different persons and that the handover from BAS-P to BAS-U should be carried out thru a physical meeting between the two of them. By dividing the projection leader and BAS-P in to two different people it allows BAS-P to solemnly focus on the work environment issues while the projection leader can focus on propelling the project forward.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis for 15 credits were executed at Sala Brand AB in Sala,Sweden. Sala Brand Ab develop, manufacture and install bodywork forfirefighter trucks in the nordic countries.

    This thesis assumes from a report called “Friska brandmän” or“Healthy Firefighters”, written by Magnusson and Hultman (2014). They visualize a problem regarding the uncertainties of what chemicals firefighters are exposed to. After the report was published some ofthe clients to Sala Brand AB started their work towards betterworking conditions, and how their breathing appliance could be storedoutside the firetruck cabin. The thesis mainly focuses on what needsand demands the customer has regarding storage of the breathingappliance. Sala Brand also has an issue with this new workingstandard, as many of their clients have different needs. Whichresults in high amounts of variation in their manufacturing andincreasing cost as a result. These can be saved if the client makesright choice.

    The work towards finding customer needs started with designing twoconcepts Sala Brand AB thinks the clients wants, which later wasshowed for the clients during the interviews. Two customers were paida visit, Nerikes Brandkår, Örebro and Räddningstjänsten Dala Mitt.The results from these interviews was then presented in tables withtheir needs and importance for the function of the concept. Later,conclusions were made on the results gathered from the interviews onwhat type of concept the costumers prefer. Then concepts andsolutions were generated to study which concept who satisfied theneeds and properties the costumers expressed. Bergman and Klefsjö(2007) means that quality of a product is based on what the costumersexpect of the product in the first place.

    The result became a concept developed from an already existingconcept, mainly because it satisfies Sala Brands needs to reduce thevariation in the production. The concept is a box with a liftingconstruction that lifts the breathing appliance up towards an angleof 30-40 degrees to make it easier for the firefighter to put it on.Then on the way home from an accident the breathing appliance can bestored in the same boxes without negatively affecting the firefighters working conditions. The breathing appliance can then,when the firefighters has returned to the fire department, be replaced with a clean one.

    How does one go about washing a house on the outside? Ekofasad AB is onecompany specialised in façade cleaning.Ekofasad uses a cleaning method which is relatively new on the Swedish market.

    For a variety of reasons the company has chosen a rapid expansion and thus hasrather little experience of what the market is like.

    The fact that there is limited knowledge of this particular field enabled writing a thesisof this kind; describing how the market works, who the competitors are as well asthe customers and how these groups act.

    The market has been investigated mostly through interviews and observations ofvarious kinds. Having completed a survey of the market the information was analysedconsidering the function of Ekofasad. The aim of the report is to serve as a basis forforthcoming decisions regarding the operation of Ekofasad.

    En organisations kvalitetsarbete kräver ständiga förbättringar i en cyklisk process för att uppfylla och överträffa kundens förväntningar. Genom forskningsstrategin aktionsforskning och applikation av hörnstensmodellens principer har Structor Uppsala genomgått en forskningsprocess byggd på delaktighet i syfte att utveckla organisationens förbättringsarbete och interna kommunikation kring förbättringsprocessen. Studien bygger på frågorna (1) Hur kan Structor Uppsala förbättra sitt förbättringsarbete? och (2) Hur kan Structor Uppsala kommunicera internt kring sitt förbättringsarbete?

    Genom att i workshopform diskutera förbättringar ur traditionella perspektiv och som evolutionär process har organisationen själva utvecklat en vision för hur förbättringscykeln i Structor bör hanteras vilken bygger på att insamla och hantera förbättringsförslag. Organisationens vision för framtiden kompletterades med teoretiska krav så som att återkoppling på förbättringsförslag behöver ske regelbundet, hanteringen av förslag bör innehålla uppföljningspunkter, det befintliga ledningssystemet bör integreras samt att förbättringsprocessen ska vara iterativ och bygga på cykeln: planera, gör, studera, lär. Med utgångspunkt i organisationens vision och de teoretiska kraven skapades ett flöde för hur förbättringar kan hanteras i Structor och hur kommunikationskanaler kan understödja förbättringsarbetet.

    Studien visar att (1) Structor Uppsalas förbättringsprocess inledningsvis kan förbättras genom att införa ett strukturerat arbetssätt baserat på föreslaget flöde. Det strukturerade arbetssättet bör dock ses som en början och en möjliggörare för efterföljande förbättringsarbete. (2) Kommunikationen kring förbättringsarbetet bör främst ske i kanaler med möjlighet att förmedla rik kommunikation och integreras i redan befintliga kanaler. Kommunikation kring den föreslagna förbättringsstrukturen föreslås därför främst ske via redan existerande möten kompletterat med digitala plattformar som redan används av organisationen.

    The Construction sector is the industry that generates the second most waste afterthe mining industry in Sweden. Therefore, reducing waste is a primary issue for thesector. JM AB have a new environmental goal to reduce waste. The companyseparated their waste into fractions in order to study them individually. This reportis the result of a survey of the waste fraction facade plaster. The investigation ismade for thick plaster that is "scrubbed" with a board with nails in order to get theproper appearance (Swedish: "rivputs").

    The purpose of the study is to see how much waste the plaster process representsand what it will take to reduce this fraction of the waste. Interviews, study visits anda literature study was made collect information about the process.

    Calculations shows that about 20% of all plaster materials are thrown away. Animportant aspect is that approximately 18% of the plaster materials is "scrubbedaway" to get the right structure of the facade. Therefore, a new material or a newmethod to apply the plaster would be required to eliminate this 18% of the waste.

    About 2% of all plaster material turns into waste when cleaning the pipe that is usedto apply the plaster on the wall. Shortening of the pipe would reduce waste andaffect the method for the labors who work with plaster at the construction site. Toimplement such a change at JM AB, an investment is required.

    AB Sandvik Cormorant’s production unit in Gimo has identified a need to examinethe handling of products between operations with the purpose of generatingproposals of improvement for the product handling.The aim of this project is to study the existing manufacturing process and givesuggestions for improvement. The proposals should reduce the manual handling ofproducts, decrease the risk of damaging the products during the manufacturing andform a basis for increased traceability. Based on a mapping of the manufacturingprocess and the problem description, a specification of requirements has beencomposed.The mapping of the manufacturing process suggests that a change of the currentsystem is required. The company is recommended to decide how the producthandling between operations should be performed as guidelines for the productionteam. They are also recommended to change the existing management to theproposal presented in this report.The result of the project is a proposal in which the existing palettes are used asproduct carriers through the entire production flow, with the exception of twooperations. The proposal is coherent with the company's idea of a standardizedworkshop-layout and will make the handling of products between operations andproduct-carriers more efficient.The result of this project also indicates that the system should include a new trolley. Ifthis proposal is introduced, the company is recommended to design a new trolley,suitable for transporting pallets.

    Abstract [en]

    Tractors of today come equipped with a CAN-system. A CAN-system sends information from sensors to electronic control units who process the signals. The sensors measure several interesting parameters such as force, pressure and speed for various components of the tractor. This thesis discuss a force sensor which is placed in the pivot of the tractors three point linkage, the sensor measure the horizontal reaction force from the load that the tractor is exposed to. Signals from this sensor can be used to measure the force from any implement that the tractor is exposed to during an operation. The results from this thesis can be used for research purposes, for example, to compare implements from different manufacturer or to optimize the implement settings during an operation. However, there is a problem that this thesis aimed to solve by developing a method which can be put into practice. When a constant force from an implement is acting on the three point linkage, the reaction force in the pivot of the three point linkage (where the force sensor is attached) is going to vary depending on the angel of the lower lift arm. It is not uncommon that the angel of the lower lift arm is varying, because different implement and soil require different settings on the linkage. This means that the force which is measured by the sensor may vary in size even though the actual force does not vary. To solve this problem, theoretical calculations have been performed and equations to describe the variation of the reaction force depending on the geometry have been created. The theory has also been verified by a finite element analysis and a practical verification test. The conclusions from these three parts correspond to each other. Theoretically that means by knowing the horizontal reaction force (measured by the force sensor) and the angles of the geometry on the three point linkage (can be measured with a position sensor) you can calculate the force an implement influence the tractor with. However, there is a problem which prevents this method from being completely reliable. It is only working when the impact force is completely parallel to the horizontal plane. Since many implements are being pulled to the soil (plow, cultivator, etc.) in practice there are also vertical forces affecting the tractor. This is no problem to solve in theory, but in practice this method does not compensate for the vertical force. This vertical force should be examined more carefully before the method can be used reliably in full scale.

    The degree projects purpose is to explore, analyze and explainwhat quality improvements robotic welding can bring to a company’soperations. The study was carried out as a qualitative case studywith an inductive approach. Together with established theoriesfrom TQM and change management, research of manually performed andautomated welding technology, and requirements from ISO standardshas been used to corroborate the requirements and changes that thewelding company are facing. As method for data collectioninterviews, document studies and benchmarking has been conductedin order to analyze the possible quality improvements the companycan achieve by changing parts of their manufacturing system frommanually to automated welding processes. The result of the studyshows that the company is experiencing inefficiency as aconsequence of the workflow in the existing workshop. The companyare at the planning stage of building av new workshop, where thenew workshop together with implementation of automated weldingprocesses can raise new opportunities and simplify the work forthe coworkers which also can reduce safety hazards. The conclusionof the degree project show that the employees who will be affectedby the implementation are aware of, and they have a positiveattitude to the change process as they will get better knowledgeand expertise due to courses required to operate the robot. Thecompany’s management system must be revised in order to adapt tothe new working methods. In relation to the installations that thecompany delivers, the installations may experience improvedwelding quality and the installations lead time will be reduced.The degree project highlights the importance of planning and thatboth the change and implementation process require structure andcontrol.

    Distributed, renewable generation-units and more efficient use of electric power,demands a developed electric grid. This grid is often referred to as the “Smart Grid”.

    This future electric system rise expectations among actors in the existing electricmarket. International organizations share visions of opportunities for electricityconsumers and new actors, ready to enter the market. At the same time, electricutility companies may question the need for some of these upcoming changes, as theyare sometimes expected to lead the development.

    This paper therefore seeks to investigate the business opportunities related to SmartGrids. This is done throughout interviews, literature-studies and analysis usinginnovation-development theories. Primary focus of the paper is directed towards theelectric utility companies, secondary towards electric consumers.

    Business opportunities for utility companies are found to be primary associated withoperation and maintenance aspects of the grid. Developed control-systems andupdated maintenance strategies may increase the overall system knowledge and thequality of the distribution. Cost-reduction activities as these are probably results ofthe revenue-cap regulation controlling grid companies. Future consumers may benefit,socially and economically, from solutions visualizing and controlling different electriccomponents in the real estate.

    At the same time the development of Smart Grids is a rather slow process, partlybecause of large amount of system-components and partly because of existing rulesand laws concerning the electric system. In order to identify future opportunitieswithin Smart Grids, it is crucial to gain knowledge of the system and to satisfy realneeds or problems.

    Healthcare systems, driven by increased demand due to growth in chronic diseases and population, suffer from lack of staffing and facility resources. Many major hospitals have long waiting lists and have subsequently pushed their production close to maximum capacity due to the high demand for services. The consequences are lack of overview of the operations and lack of coordination between healthcare staff, which leads to treatment delays. Surgery planning or scheduling is an important part of production planning in hospitals, which is considered highly complex due to high variability and many decisions variables that need to be considered. Those responsible for surgery planning are often considered to lack the right tools to support them in evaluating the many different decision factors.   Simulation is a technology within the field of operations research which has been applied to aid with surgery planning problems and to look for process improvements. Many studies however use a simplified approach to the surgery planning, due to the complexities of the planning problem. Studies have further argued that surgery planning fails to consider downstream resources and the negative effects it has on utilization of those resources.

    This thesis is based on a case study at one of Sweden’s major hospitals and aims to explore how simulation could become a decision support to help with surgery planning and identifying what process improvements such a tool could be aimed at. The surgery planning decision making process is first analyzed using a hierarchical framework for hospitals’ production planning. The results were that the decision making process regarding patient flows needs to be improved by taking both a top-down and bottom-up strategy for better information flow and coordination. The study further concludes that improved coordination and information sharing are important factors to improve patient flow through the hospital, which could be supported by the usage of Discrete Event Simulation for decision making. The ideal decision support tool is however considered the simulation tool embedded with an online system to support bed management decisions which could increase patient throughput. Such a tool could help to decrease the demand for the hospital’s beds by discharging patients quicker. In addition, it could support the bottom-up strategy for coordination, while implementing a multi-method or hybrid simulation could further support the top-down part of the strategy.

    Abstract [en]

    This project deals with researching, designing and building jet-engines. A simple turbojet engine was designed and construction was begun. The design was made by studying the work done by industry and researchers over the course of the history of jet engines. The methods were then discussed and chosen in a way that would simplify the design work as well as the construction of the engine. The goal was to create a self-sustaining combustion within the engine. The design settled upon consists of a radial compressor, an annular combustion chamber and an axial turbine. Since the compressor would have been the most difficult part to machine the decision was made early on to use the compressor from a turbocharger out of an automotive engine. Upon further study it was discovered that the characteristics of this compressor was not compatible with the rest of the design, as the compressor was made for an RPM range outside of what we could achieve and the compression ratio was too low. Most of the rest of the engine had already been built, and there was not enough time to design and build another compressor so work was aborted on the engine.

    The project has been performed on ScandiNova Systems AB, a world

    leader in the development and production of pulse generators. The

    company has a number of water-cooled products in its range. In

    order to make a cost-effective design of cooling systems, both the

    company and their customers are interested in knowing the pressure

    drop across the cooling systems, i.e. the force required to obtain

    a given flow rate in the system.

    In the various cooling systems, there are different types of

    cooling plates which are manufactured by the company itself. The

    goal of the project is to obtain pressure drop curves across these

    cooling plates in the systems so a theoretical pressure drop can

    be calculated early in the projects.

    To determine the pressure drop across the cooling plates there

    have been three different methods used in the work. The different

    methods, which are the main elements of the project are:

    theoretical calculations, CFD-analysis and practical measurements.

    CFD analysis is performed by simulating the system in a specially

    designed software for analysis of flows.

    The results from theoretical calculations and practical

    measurements support each other and as such the method is reliable

    and valid to be used in continuous production and final

    inspection. The results from the CFD-analysis differ from the

    results from the other methods, which may be due to the factors

    taken into account in the CFD-software.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to first investigate the efficiency of the most commonly used performance measures for minimizing the number of workstations (NWs) in approaches addressing simple assembly line balancing problem (SALBP) for both straight and U-shaped line, and second to provide a comparative evaluation of 20 constructive heuristics to find solutions to the SALBP-1.

    Design/methodology/approach: A total of 200 problems are solved by 20 different constructive heuristics for both straight and U-shaped assembly line. Moreover, several comparisons have been made to evaluate the performance of constructive heuristics.

    Findings: Minimizing the smoothness index is not necessarily equivalent to minimizing the NWs; therefore, it should not be used as the fitness function in approaches addressing the SALBP-1. Line efficiency and the idle time are indeed reliable performance measures for minimizing the NWs. The most promising heuristics for straight and U-shaped line configurations for SALBP-1 are also ranked and introduced.

    Practical implications: Results are expected to help scholars and industrial practitioners to better design effective solution methods for having the most balanced assembly line. This study will further help with choosing the most proper heuristic with regard to the problem specifications and line configuration.

    Originality/value: There is limited research assessing the efficiency of the common objectives for SALBP-1. This study is among the first to prove that minimizing the workload smoothness is not equivalent to minimizing the NWs in SALBP-1 studies. This work is also one of the first attempts for evaluating the constructive heuristics for both straight and U-shaped line configurations.

    While some countries are thriving in political stability and economicprosperity, others are struggling with political instability and poverty. The fundamental difference between the successful and the failed nations boildown to their institutions, as stated by Acemoglu and Robinson in their influential institutional economics work, “Why Nations Fail”. Inclusive institution is the reason why some countries achieved economic success and prosperity because they allow the population to participate and take advantage of the economic activities while extractive institutions hinder it incase of failed nations.

    The purpose of this study is to explore more closely how extractive institutions persist in an ex-colonised country in spite of institutional drift andthe political disruptions of post-colonial governments avowedly vying to rid the present of the past. Indonesia is chosen as the subject for this historical desk research case study wherein the relevant history surrounding thecolonial period and the subsequent development will be explored andanalysed through the lens of secondary literature. In addition to being based on textual evidence, the institutional economics approach will be used as a theoretical framework to break down the social, economic, and political aspects of the history. Furthermore, the mechanism of how the institutions evolve will be seen through the political development framework. The result will show that patrimonialism is present as an extractive feature in both modern and colonial Indonesia and how it has been sustained after independence. This study also suggests other extractive features as a legacy ofthe Dutch colonialism that is separate from the native tradition and customs which are Javacentrism and racism in the form of social stratification between races as a result of colonial policies.

    This thesis will describe the redesign of the manure fork SverigeGrepen. The product

    is available for purchase in Scandinavia and and parts of the rest of Europe.

    The product is available in stores but the companys goal is to start distribute it over

    the internet. A problem today with a purchase over the internet is that the costumer

    has to pay a high shipping-fee due to the products unique form. The long handle

    contributes to the high shipping-fee which makes it hard to attract costumers to

    purchase the product online. Deficiencies have been found at the manure forks basket

    and needs to be examined. These problems need to be checked out so that

    SverigeGrepen can become an even more compatitive product.

    To obtain a solid theoretical ground a literature was made about the concerned

    subjects.

    The project proceeded with the gathering of information about the product, by

    communications with the contact at the company and usage of the manure fork in it´s

    real enviroment to locate complications with the design. Some temporary souloutions

    have been tested but would in the long run be in need of new souloutions.

    Based on similar products and the existing soloutions some new consepts were

    introduced. The best concepts were mdeled in CAD and modified by some input

    from the company and a plastic worker. Images of the CAD model and a real life-size

    prototype printed in a 3D-printer were used as support during the discussions.

    The outcome of the project is that design documents of an easy to use souloution to

    assemble/dissmantle the manure forks shafthalves whitch minimizes the packaging

    volume and thereby reduces the shipping costs, were made. Designpropositions were

    produced to eliminate deficiencies located at parts of the basket in the beginning of

    the project.

    To tackle the problem of poor adherence to medication, pill boxes are manufactured to help patients store and organise their pills. Unfortunately, pill boxes alone cannot aide people with memory difficulties to improve their adherence to medication. A solution to this problem is to improve pill boxes by integrating technology. Technology makes it possible to have audio signals, as well as light signals, in a pill box, which can remind the users of their dosing times. The purpose of this report is to design a pill box unit, which together with an already designed watch unit from the company Victrix AB, will form a lockable dosing system. The pill box unit itself should be able to facilitate medication intake for people with disabilities in their hands, among other disabilities and diagnoses, as well as for the visually impaired. Interviews were conducted with potential users of a dosing system to identify the product requirements of a pill box. These requirements were used to generate different concepts. From the concepts developed, two were chosen for further development and design in CAD. The results from the study were Dosis, a pill box with an automatic locking function, and Medix, a pill box with a manual locking function, which together meet all the set requirements. Due to the limitations imposed on the design, in correlation with the requirements that were set, the study could not design a concept of a pill box that could solely meet all the requirements.
