    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Title: Företag X” the hidden power” a study of internal communication, culture and internal branding. Företaget X has in real life a different name.

Number of pages: 42 (49 with enclosures)

    Author: Charlotta Babington Thorszelius

Course: Media and Communication Studies C

    Period: Autumn 2007

    University: Uppsala University, Sweden

Purpose/Aim: To analyze the internal communication, culture and internal branding of an insurance company and how they can improve these company tools can be improved.

Material/Method: qualitative method using interviews, analysis of internal communication policies and observations.

Main results: The policy documents do not match how the internal communication works in every day life. There is a structure that is working and the information flows through the different levels. The vision and goals are difficult to understand as they are written in a complicated way. The words that carry the values of the company are well known and everyone stands behind them. The staff is happy, content and pleased to be working for Företaget X. There is a strong culture with a lot of the basic underlying assumptions shown as artefacts. This also shows in the strong brand which has been built on the strength of the federation of 24 local companies, at the same time acting on a local market.

Key words: internal communication, culture, internal branding, ambassadors, communication flow, sensemaking in organizations

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Title: Strategic Communication within franchising, a case study of Gallerix

Number of pages: 60 (65 with enclosures)

    Author: Charlotta Babington Thorszelius

    Course: Media and Communication D

    Period: Spring 2008

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University, Sweden

Purpose/Aim: To find out, by doing a case study, how communication between the two parties in a franchising relationship works, and how communication can strengthen the concept and brand. By analysing the communication, identify strengths and weaknesses and make suggestions for improvement.

Material/Method: Qualitative method by using interviews

Main results: The understanding of the concept and the relationship between franchiser and franchisees are vital for the success of the franchising chain. The main internal communication channel today is the Intranet, and more personal contacts and meetings are requested. The yearly meetings are appreciated by the franchisees, but the content of the meetings are of varied quality. The chains value words, which are important for how the brand is perceived by the customer, are slightly different from how the franchiser and the franchisees sees them. One reason for this can be that the franchiser feels that it is difficult to have common goals and visions for a franchising chain, as the two parties have their own differing goals and visions. Not all franchisees follow the concept to 100%, and this has an impact on the chain and the brand, as a whole.

Key words: Understanding, relationship, brand, franchising, communication, information

    Designing for Transformative Play2017Ingår i: ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, ISSN 1073-0516, E-ISSN 1557-7325, Vol. 24, nr 3, artikel-id 18Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Numerous studies have foregrounded how play is only partially shaped by the artifacts that their designers design. The play activity can change the structures framing it, turning players into co-designers through the mere act of playing. This article contributes to our understanding of how we can design for play taking into account that play has this transformative power. We describe four ways that players can engage with framing structures, which we classify in terms of whether players conform to explore, transgress, or (re)create them. Through the examples of three case studies, we illustrate how this model has been useful in design: as an analytical tool for deconstructing player behavior, to articulate design goals and support specific design choices, and for shaping the design process.

Playing Close to Home: Interaction and Emerging Play in Outdoor Play Installations2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Outdoor play is becoming an increasingly marginalised activity in the urban landscape. Even in HCI, research on interactive solutions for outdoor play has largely been limited to special areas and in particular playgrounds. But children play everywhere, and especially play close to home is central in children's play activities. In this article we draw upon knowledge about designing for children's play in interaction design as well as in landscape architecture, to study how interactive play installations can be integrated in outdoor environments of a residential area. We present a field study in which digitally enhanced play installations were installed, in dialogue with the landscape, in between the buildings of a residential area. We focus on how emerging play activities made use of the installations as well as of the surrounding landscape in expected as well as unexpected ways. Based on the observations, we discuss how residential play is special, and how this affects how to design for it.

    Abstract

Title: The New Type of Music Industry at AllEars.se (Den nya musikbranschen på AllEars.se)

    Author: Viktor Backemar

    Tutor: Else Nygren

Course: Media och Communication Studies C

    Period: Fall 2007

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to compare AllEars´ own view of the website AllEars.se to an observed view of the same site. The comparison is based on theories regarding the Internet in today’s society, convergence, communities and collective intelligence, interactivity and participation, and business in today’s society.

Method: Since the paper has a purpose to compare two views of the same website there are two main methods in use. AllEars´ own view has been created via an interview with the company’s CEO, a press release that was released in connection with the launch of the website and texts found on the website. The other view is based on an observation of the website, preformed in November 2007.

Main results: The views are different from each other seeing that AllEars´ own view is more positive than the observed view. The biggest and most crucial difference between the two views where found in the relationship between the producers and the users, in terms of who has got the actual power on the website. The users aren’t the ones who has got the actual power, instead the producers has the power and controls the activity on the website with predesigned rules and limitations. However there are some similarities between the two views: The website has a strong connection to the offline world, a good possibility for the users to interact with each other, and the fact that AllEars.se represents something new in the music industry.

Keywords: AllEars.se, music industry, Internet, convergence, communities, collective intelligence, interactivity, participation, SonyBMG, TV4.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to compare international ideal competencies for Special Collections librarianship to the possibility to acquire these competencies as a student of library education or as a professional librarian with the care of special collections in a public library in Sweden today. The questions posed are: How are international ideal competencies concerning special collections looked upon in Swedish public libraries? How can students or professional librarians today acquire competences necessary for the work at hand in special collections? Suggested in this thesis is to emphasize the importance of understanding that handling special collections demands other skills and belongs to other practices than ordinary work in a public library. The major discrepancy with international ideal competencies consists in the lack of ways for education in the field of special collections for both students and professional librarians in Sweden today.

    Abstract

Title: A gaze says more than a 1000 words – a study of the portrayal of female celebrities in the photographic material on the online portals of Aftonbladet and Expressen En blick säger mer än 1000 ord - en studie av porträtteringen av kvinnliga kändisar i Aftonbladetsoch Expressens bildmaterial på Internet

Number of pages: 58 (59 including enclosures)

    Author: Sofie Backman

    Tutor: Amelie Hössjer

Course: Media and Communication Studies D

    Period: Spring 2008

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University, Sweden

Aim: The aim of this essay is to study in what ways female celebrities are portrayed in the photographic material of the Swedish tabloid press. In which situations does she appear? What function does she seem to behold in the pictures? Further the thesis explores whetherthe portrayal of the female celebrity shows signs of stereotyping.

Method/Material: The study combines a quantitative and a qualitative method. A picture analysis of photographic material from the online versions of the Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen has been conducted. To do this, a model based on categories from gender and celebrity research in the media field was created and then applied on the material. The study included 40 photographs of Swedish and international female celebritites from the popular culture industries and was studied in-depth according to elements such as activity, smile, gaze, distance and roles.

Main Results: The main results from the picture analysis show that the female celebrity is seldom shown performing any clear activity in the pictures; she is often passive and posing and she is portrayed as an object to be looked at. She also seems to be aware of this position. There is great focus on body and looks, which even further enhances the objectification. The pictures of the female celebrity show clear signs of stereotypisation. The female role in the pictures can be described using the keywords: inactive, available, personal address, body and looks and an object to be looked at.

Keywords: women, celebrity, stereotypes, picture analysis, Swedish tabloid press

Aim: The aim of this essay is to study the image that students in Uppsala have of Studenthälsan and its excersice department. This includes how the students perceive the organization’s way of communicating with them, both in terms of the marketing and their reception at the facilities, and what they would like to be different regarding this in the future.

Method/Material: Together with literature studies, a qualitive method has been used and three focus group interviews with a total of 15 informants have been conducted. One group contained students that are customers of Studenthälsan, one group contained only students that use anther training facility, and a third group was a mixed group which combined both students training at Studentälsan and elsewhere.

Main Results: The main results from the focus group interviews show that theimage of Studenthälsan varies among the students. The studentsthat use or have used the facilities are generally slightly more positive about the organization. Generally, students feel that the organization is accessible and they like the student-dominated clientele. However, the the overall opinion about Studenthälsan’s image is quite vague and the marketing material is regarded dull and often too informational. The students are mobile and do not feel loyality toward the organization as such. Studenthälsan is in need of a clear communication platform to strengthen its profile and thus further improve its image among the students.

Memoryscape: Designing with Senior Citizens as Memory Meditation2013Ingår i: Human Factors in Computing and Informatics, Berlin Heidelberg: Springer, 2013, s. 601-608Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Supporting senior citizens with tools to recollect past experiences about everyday life is gaining ground within HCI research. In this paper, we focus on how seniors reminiscing can be a resource for designers to uncover the situated aspects. In particular, we argue that an analytical focus on seniors’ memories is a fruitful stance for tracing how design practice situates issues of senior wellbeing. We employ the case of designing with senior citizens to design ICT for supporting adherence to physical therapy at home and discuss two retrospective examples. These examples highlight how seniors’ physical wellbeing was situated in, memories of a musically rich and mobile life, and memories of youthful male body. Through retrospection, we offer the preliminary notion of memoryscape as a conceptual term for orienting how a design process can mediate seniors’ memories as a way of accounting for situated elderliness in design.

Exploring the Dynamics of Rumors on Social Media in the Chinese Context2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Rumors always trigger public panic in China, while the advanced Internet technology has tremendously influenced the daily life of the Chinese. Thus, the dynamics of rumor spreading via the social media in China are worthwhile discussing. In order to fulfill the aim of this research, one of the prevalent Chinese social media sites, the Sina microblog, is introduced and analyzed within the context of the salt-buying frenzy incident that occurred in China in 2011. Various theoretical approaches, from the sociological and media studies perspectives, are introduced to form the framework for analysis. The relevant data and materials were collected via questionnaires with Chinese Internet users, while previous academic research and publications provide supportive materials. From the analysis of this social media site and contemporary Chinese circumstances, it was seen that the Guanxi network extended and enlarged the influence of online rumors to offline Chinese. In other words, the Guanxi network, expanded by social media, can be considered as the most important part of the dynamic process of rumor spreading in China. However, the openness and freedom of the Internet atmosphere were found to be the main factors in eliminating online rumors.

Tweets Win Votes: A Persuasive Communication Perspective on Donald Trump’s Twitter Use During the 2016 US Presidential Election Campaign2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Twitter, a microblogging platform, has been increasingly used as a tool for political election campaigns. In an attempt to persuade people to vote for them, candidates and political parties worldwide have begun to incorporate Twitter in their campaigns to disseminate campaign information, promote themselves, and mobilize voters. In the 2016 U.S presidential election, Donald Trump had actively utilized Twitter to promote his campaign and convince voters to support him, which helped him earn a strong presence and huge popularity on Twitter. Eventually Trump even successfully got elected as the 45th US president. Although the rise of Twitter in political campaigns has been studied by researches from different disciplines, there have been very few studies focusing on Donald Trump or his communication performance on social media in the 2016 US presidential campaign. Besides, it is found that there is a lack of studying candidates’ social media use from the perspective of persuasive communication. In order to reveal how Donald Trump was making use of Twitter to influence audiences’ attitudes, this paper will present a content analysis of Donald Trump’s Twitter use from the perspective of persuasive communication. Specifically, the study will investigate the characteristics of messages demonstrated from Donald Trump’s tweets, and examine whether his messages placed an emphasis on certain aspects. The aim of this study is to offer insights into Donald Trump’s Twitter use, particularly about his persuasive communication on Twitter during the political election campaign.

Business Intelligence in Uppsala Univeristy - Do academic institutions practice what they preach?2015Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Business Intelligence (BI) is not a new concept. However, it is still complicated to work with it due to the different views and ways of implementation. This study has adopted an organisational oriented approach of BI: getting the right information, to the right people, at the right time. It was found in this study that poorly implemented BI features and inadequate information infrastructure may lead to workarounds in order to compensate for missing or lacking features and systems.

This case study has been conducted at the faculty of Social Sciences of Uppsala University (UU) where a set of interviews were conducted to individuals on one of the key positions at the university; the Director of Studies (DoS). The aim was to map out the key processes and head activities of the DoS’s and evaluate them through the BI view of this thesis. Being the conclusion a concrete mapping of the DoS head activities as well as BI assessment of the current situation of the studied departments. Some improvements have been proposed in order to remedy the lacking of valuable and critical features and systems. However, it was found that the current system infrastructure and problem area is too immature in order to implement any form of integration. Several studies on key positions and influential systems need to be conducted in order to exhaustively map out and discover the problem area.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine the construction of Nordic and organizational identities performed by the libraries of two Nordic cultural institutions: the Nordic Culture Point in Helsinki, Finland, and the Nordic House in Reykjavik, Iceland. To do this, three main methods were used: (a) Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis was employed to interpret the institutions’ self-representations, (b) the topics of debates and talks organized by the institutions were analysed and (c) interviews were performed with librarians currently working at these libraries.

The results show that the institutions are (re)presented as two separate units rather than two parts of the same organization. The Nordic Culture Point is more explicitly connected to the Nordic Council of Ministers while the Nordic House presents itself as an iconic building in a marketing manner.

The institutions are affected by politically defined themes and values, which permeate their events. The most common themes for talks and debates were literature, environmental issues or sustainable development, and politics. Even though there is a clear influence from political strategy documents, many topics with little or no connection to these documents were found. In addition, the literature selection processes at these libraries do not seem to be largely affected by politically defined priorities, based on the librarians’ views.

According to the librarians who were interviewed, the aim of the Nordic libraries is to offer literature in the Nordic languages that would otherwise be difficult to access, gather this literature in one location, and promote interest in the Nordic region. While they agree that the main point of reference for the Nordic libraries is public libraries, the librarians differ on the role digital technology should play in the library.

This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

    Abstract [sv]

The Contribution of Collaborative Tools and Technologies in Facilitating Tacit Healthcare Knowledge Sharing amongst Clinicians: In the Case of Akadamiska Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Healthcare is a knowledge-intensive field. A significant quantum of extremely vital and viable healthcare knowledge exists in a tacit form, yet due to various operational and technical reasons such healthcare knowledge is not entirely utilized and put into professional practice. The strong increase in expert work and knowledge-intensive fields make examining the topic timely and hypothetically interesting. The most significant contribution of this study is the increase in understanding, as well as, tacit healthcare knowledge sharing amongst physicians and clinicians with the type of collaborative tools and technologies they have at their disposal. Collaborative tools and technologies help employees of an organization work closely with their colleagues, partner organization and other volunteers as tacit healthcare knowledge sharing among clinicians such as sharing of best practices, tips and tricks, inter professional collaborative networking, clinical experiences and skills are known to have a significant impact on the quality of medical diagnosis and decisions. This paper posits that collaboration tools and technologies can provide new opportunities for tacit healthcare knowledge sharing amongst health-experts, and demonstrates this by presenting findings from a review of relevant literature and a survey conducted with Medical Doctors who have moderate to high interaction with collaborative tools and technologies in the healthcare industry. Semi-structure interviews were conducted with health-experts (Medical Doctors and clinicians) of Akademiska Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden. Final thematic analysis unveiled six themes as potential contributors of collaborative tools and technologies in facilitating tacit healthcare knowledge sharing among clinicians. The newly developed themes are described and interpreted briefly; extensive literature review has been carried out to relate the emerged themes with the literatures and part of interview participant responses are supported as well. Finally this research suggests further empirical studies shall be conducted to acknowledge this study.

Facebook usage in a local government: A content analysis of page owner posts and user posts2016Ingår i: Transforming Government: People, Process and Policy, ISSN 1750-6166, E-ISSN 1750-6174, Vol. 10, nr 4, s. 548-567Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose To fully grasp the potential of using social media, one must know what governments and citizens are communicating in these media. Despite much statistics published, there is a dearth of research analyzing information content in detail. The purpose of this paper is to identify the kind of information exchange that occurs between a local government and its constituent citizens using social media. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a qualitative single case study of the Facebook presence of the municipality and city of Karlstad, Sweden, one of the most prominent local governments on Facebook in the country. Facebook page data were collected between May 2015 and July 2015. A content analysis was performed on the data to explore new and existing categories that drive the analysis. Findings The paper identifies 11 content categories for municipality posts and 13 content categories for user posts (citizen or organization). The frequency for each content category reveals that the page owner is first of all using its Facebook page to promote different happenings in the municipality while the page user is asking questions to the municipality or other users. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to one municipality, but achieves analytical generalizability in its findings. In other words, the categories and mode of communication are a finding in and of itself that in future research may be validated in terms of commonality on a national scale. Practical implications Management concerns about opening up a municipality Facebook page for user posting may be exaggerated: positive posts are as common as complaints. If an organization wants to use the Facebook page for increased user participation and collaboration, it seems that users, both citizens and organizations, welcome such opportunities. However, such posts are not likely to receive many comments or shares from other users. Originality/value The paper is one of the first that uses content analysis to categorize both page owner posts and user posts on a local government Facebook page. The content categories identified in the paper provide novel and detailed insights on what types of information exchange occur on social media between a local government and citizens but also highlight the need to distinguish organizations from citizens among the visitors to the government Facebook page. Different types of user will post different types of content. The identified content categories can serve as a basis for future empirical research within e-government research.

Photojournalism in War and Armed Conflicts: Professional Photography and the Framing of Victimhood in World Press Photos of the Year2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

During the last decades, the presence of visual media has increased dramatically. However, very little empirical research has been carried out to determine the implication of the medium photograph as a visual information transmitter. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the characteristics of professional press photos that relate to war and armed conflicts and to examine the framing of victimhood. A thorough literature review as well as an iconographic interpretation of World Press Photos serves to ascertain data in order to permit answering the research questions.

The World Press Photo Foundation is the subject of research as it represents the most prestigious international competition for press photography at present and thus acts as an agenda-setter. That highlights the implication of its decisions about professional photographs since its coverage of certain issues biases the international media coverage of the same. It also affects the development of professional photojournalism. In this context the meaning of photographs in today’s visual media societies can be discussed.

    Abstract [en]

In the IS-literature, graphical representations often accompany Actor Network Theory (ANT) analyses of IS-initiatives, serving as tools for improving visibility of the case and interest and power of actors. Building on a comprehensive literature survey, we identify a gap in existing visualisation approaches, as these mainly focus on offering visual support of the case. We present a visualisation approach and a generic, precise and well defined notation that is directly mapped to key concepts of ANT, highlighting the process of translating actors to commit to the implementation initiative. The approach is illustrated by an actor-network analysis of a particular IS-initiative in a Swedish media house.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates to what extent holistic sustainability values persist when a sustainability innovation initiative is transformed to standard mode of operation in a Swedish municipality through the lens of actor-network theory. The focus is on the effect of change in sustainability routines, inscribed in IT systems, when governance shifts from a dedicated initiative management to regular management. This longitudinal study shows that information systems can play a central role to enrol stakeholders in sustainable practices, but that sustainability outcomes are closely related to the view of sustainability inscribed in routines and supportive IT systems.

    Abstract [en]

Title: From inspectors to guides: how citizen journalism and participatory culture

affect the professional identity of Swedish journalists (Swedish title: Från granskare

    journalisters professionella identitet).

Number of pages: 44 (48 including enclosures).

Authors: Towe Bengtsson and Matilda Källén.

    Tutor: Amelie Hössjer.

Course: Media and Communication Studies C.

    Period: Fall 2011.

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Informatics and

    Media, Uppsala University.

Purpose/Aim: The goal of this paper was to answer how citizen journalism and

participatory journalism as well as an increasing range of information today have

affected the professional identity and professional lives of journalists. In addition to

this, study how journalists today respond to these changes.

Material/Method: The study is based on Deuze’s theories about journalistic ideals,

Jenkins’ theories about convergence culture, and on theories about professionalization

and de-professionalization based on Nygren, Wiik and Torstendahl’s theories. The

study is based on eight interviews with professional journalists, four employed

journalists and four freelance journalists. The results are analysed based on a broad

    theoretical framework.

Main results: The results of this survey show that the role of the professional

journalist is extremely complex, with a strong ideological basis that fundamentally

influences the journalist's view of the profession and of him- or herself. The survey

shows that the journalist role is changing and how important the identification as a

journalist still is. Furthermore, the survey shows that the role is being redefined. The

role consists of two levels, an ideological level and a more practical level. The survey

shows how these two levels are in harmony, but also on a collision course, and how

journalists seek to clarify their ideology to distinguish themselves from others, but

also how they actually adapt the ideals on a more practical level.

In summary, despite a de-professionalization of the profession, the journalists keep

the journalistic ideals very high, although they constantly redefine their role, as well

as the ideals. They see their role as an aid to guide the readers, rather than a traditional

journalist, although they still cling to a traditional perception of the ideal journalist.

A comprehensive summary and categorization of physical quantity libraries2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In scientific applications, physical quantities and units of measurement are used regularly. If the inherent incompatibility between these different units is not handled properly it can lead to major, and sometimes catastrophic, problems. Although the risk of a miscalculation is high and the cost equally so, almost no programming languages has support for physical quantities. Instead developers often rely on external libraries to help them spot these mistakes or prevent them all together.

There are several hundred of these types of libraries, spread across multiple sites and with no simple way to get an overview. No one has summarized what has and has not been achieved so far in the area leading to many developers trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’ instead of building on what has already been done. This shows a clear need for this type of research.

Employing a systematic approach to look through and analyze all available physical quantity libraries, the search results were condensed into 82 libraries which are presented in this thesis. These are the most comprehensive and well-developed, open-source libraries, chosen from approximately 3700 search results across seven repository hosting sites. In this group, 30 different programming languages are represented. The goal is for the results of this thesis to contribute to a shared foundation on which to build future libraries as well as provide an easy way of spreading knowledge about which libraries exist in the area, thus making it easier for more people to use them.

    Abstract [en]

In scientific applications, physical quantities and units of measurement are used regularly. If the inherent incompatibility between these units is not handled properly it can lead to major, sometimes catastrophic, problems. Although the risk of a miscalculation is high and the cost equally so, almost none of the major programming languages has support for physical quantities. Instead, scientific code developers often make their own tools or rely on external libraries to help them spot or prevent these mistakes. We employed a systematic approach to examine and analyse all available physical quantity open-source libraries. Approximately 3700 search results across seven repository hosting sites were condensed into a list of 82 of the most comprehensive and well-developed libraries currently available. In this group, 30 different programming languages are represented. Out of these 82 libraries, 38 have been updated within the last two years. These 38 are summarised in this paper as they are deemed the most relevant. The conclusion we draw from these results is that there is clearly too much diversity, duplicated efforts, and a lack of code sharing and harmonisation which discourages use and adoption.

    Abstract [sv]

Kickstarting a Kickstarter: Kommunikativa komponenter i lyckade & misslyckade crowdfundingkampanjer2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In November 2008, the National Library of Sweden decided to change their standard classification system from the Swedish Library Classification System (SAB) to the american Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). One of the main reasons to this transition was the assumption of gaining the possibility to exchange and import catalogue posts by using an outspread international classification system. Throughout the years, it has been disputed whether DDC’s treatment of music has been the most suitable. The system has been criticized for being biased in favor of Western music and not being updated with the growth of new music. The purpose of this study is to examine the opinions among librarians connected to the music area on how this classification transition went, and how it has affected their work. The primary questions concerned with this study are if the interviewees perceive that there is a problem by using DDC for music and if so, how? Additionally, does this change also affect the library users, or is it only the librarians? The method I am using to examine these questions is qualitative interviews based on Steinar Kvale and Svend Brinkmann’s thoughts in their book Den kvalitativa forskningsintervjun. The theories that will be used for this thesis are theories concerning functional requirements of classification systems. The results show that the interviewees’ opinions are that DDC’s notation tends to be long, which affects the usability of the system. The interviewees’ perception is that DDC is also lacking in its treatment regarding musical recordings and the popular music area. One of the main reasons for this shortage is because there is basically no other library outside of Sweden that is classifying such material with DDC, which means that the information exchange with countries abroad has so far been rather exiguous.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the cultural place and status of video and computer games in the Swedish public library. Using works on popular culture and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study employs quantitative methods, as well as textual analysis, to analyze the results of an online questionnaire with 19 questions focusing on selection criteria, shelf placement, perceived competence, as well as reasoning for having or not having these games in the library. 286 out of the 440 libraries contacted is participating in the study, and the libraries consist exclusively of public libraries in Sweden that are found in the database of the Royal Library.

The results of this study show that a larger number of libraries than previously indicated have started to provide electronic games to their patrons. At the same time, patterns in the data and comments suggests that these games in many cases still do not enjoy the same level of cultural recognition as other media. Indicative of this is the way most libraries seem to focus on the medium being exclusively for their young patrons, with seem-ingly very little in the way of investment for adults. Also relevant is selection process being highly influenced by the type and amount of violence in the games, regardless of the level of competence and knowledge about games among library staff. These findings relate to and expand upon previous studies regarding electronic games, cul-ture and the public library. This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this thesis was to apply a critical discourse analyses connected to a gender theory on the Swedish subject headings (SAO) to find a hierarchical order expressed by the choice of words. The thesis shows how gender discourses are practiced in the Swedish subject headings and suggests a change in the list. To examine this list I asked some questions: does SAO express a male norm? Can I find any gender based power relations in SAO? How does a gender discourse express it self in SAO?

To examine the list Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis has been used, also Michel Foucault's ideas about discourses. To the discourse analysis Yvonne Hirdman's gender theories have been connected. To suggest changes I've used theories by Maud Eduards. The subject headings examined were picked from the royal library's webpage; this method has been used to get access to the laest version of the list.

An overwhelming majority of the examined words showed a male norm and a gender discourse that expresses a female subordination and gender inequality. The inner discourses of the list affect the social context, this in turn affects how the user think, interpret and create new words. At the end of the work changes of the subject headings are given in which both male and female terms are subordinated, this to show the male, not as an universal subject, but a gender and by that eliminate a gender based hierarchy.

    Abstract [en]

The focus of this two year master’s thesis in Library- and Information science is the study of two Swedish Public Library buildings with the examples Lomma and Halmstad. The main goal and purpose of the thesis is to try to uncover which views and values of the public library are expressed in the examined libraries; and to what extent these views manifests are shown in its architecture.

The theoretical framework is based on Raymond Williams’s cultural concepts of effective, dominant culture and the two extremities of this culture, called residual and emergent cultures. A second aspect is Yi-Fu Tuans concepts of Space and Place. The study also uses a historical background of Swedish Public Library Buildings.

By close reading and textual analyses, the empirical study focuses on the municipalities’ documents surrounding the building of the library buildings in Lomma and Halmstad. The architectural perspective is studied through the architects own documents and architectural journals discussing the built Library Buildings.

Results show that the technological advances of the time these libraries were built has put them in a position of change, which also is visible in the architecture. The libraries in Lomma and Halmstad function as civic icons of the community and the architecture is very dependent of the places where they are situated. The expressions of the two libraries differ in details but the overall result show that the values exhibited behind the building of the examined libraries is a part of a historical residual culture, functioning as effective and dominant.

The conclusion of the thesis is that the expression of the architecture is however a part of an emergent culture. The buildings aim to comprise the values and display the diverse causes in its architecture. The buildings seek to manifest the ideal activity and working of the modern Public Library.

    Abstract [sv]

The Cultural Characteristics in China's Official Online Tourism Advertisements2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Tourism advertising is an important approach in providing information about tourism destinations and in attracting potential customers, and in this process, particular cultural factors are usually conveyed. In this thesis, the main intention was to describe the cultural factors reflected in advertising and discover the role that Chinese cultural identity plays in China’s official Internet tourism advertisements to overseas markets using a theoretical framework of diverse cultural issues. The objects of this study are the official tourism advertisements from China National Tourist Office’s (CNTO) websites.

The author researched Chinese cultural characteristics and tried to connect them with the expressional tendencies in tourism advertisements. Using a quantitative content analysis method, the most frequent cultural symbol in advertising was discovered as the basis and general image of the online tourism advertisements. Then the author discussed the external manifestations of cultural factors in tourism advertising in detail and analysed the internal cultural values behind them using the qualitative discourse analysis method. The main conclusions of this study indicated that the most representative cultural characteristic of Chinese culture in tourism advertising is a high-context cultural feature; in addition, at present traditional ideology in Chinese society, such as Confucianism and Taoism, was still being conveyed in tourism advertising. In general, Chinese cultural traditions influenced tourism advertising expressions, both in external manifestations and internal connotations.

Overview of European Audience Research. Research report from the COST Action IS0906 Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies2011Rapport (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The state of audience research in European countries is not yet properly charted due to the fragmented and varied nature of the field. Obtaining an overview was both an objective of the Action in its own right, and a precondition of other achievements. For the first meeting of the Working Groups (WG) in Lisbon (November 11-13, 2010), the Steering Group (SG) of the Action invited the members to submit short national essays that review existing and emerging audience research in their respective countries. The reviews could be theoretical, topical, methodological, empirical or institutional. Most of them were presented in the WG sessions of the Lisbon meeting. The SG requested some revisions or additional essays in order to better cover the countries for which the essays where too focused, or to cover the countries that were not represented at all. In total, 58 essays covering the 30 participating countries were delivered and are available on the Action website at: http://www.cost-transforming-audiences.eu. This research report brings together these 59 essays as well as a tentative synthesis in the concluding section.

    Abstract [en]

This Essay is meant to look into the possibilities of the mainframe systems and whether they have a spot as one of the leading information system service providers in the foreseeable future. In conclusion, “How does the future of the mainframe look?”. Numerous big IT media providers such as news services, blogs and forums have written about the subject of whether the mainframe is going to last as one of the go-to platforms for core operation information systems. This essay is going to look into the actual state of the mainframe, and where the mainframe is heading in the future. It also delves further into what options there currently are to the mainframe platform and why these options might be better or worse than the mainframe. To answer these questions the essay will present the results of research from multiple large international companies such as IBM, Ericsson and Volvo. During these interviews questions have been answered about the current situation of the mainframe, why it is currently suffering from rumors about being on the brink of death, and what the companies actually think about the mainframe. The Essay does not look too deeply into the technical aspects of the mainframe platform, but more at the system as a whole, and its organizational impact in larger companies. To help do this the essay makes use of the DeLean and McLone model of information system success. As with all matters regarding the future, even this essay could not with certainty state exactly what will happen with the mainframe platform in the future. However multiple interesting conclusions were made about the future and alternatives of the mainframe.

Ekologiska attityder: En kvalitativ studie i attitydskapande gentemot ekologiska livsmedel.2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

    Aim:

This essay aims to conclude which sources, actors and causalities individuals use to obtain and sustain certain attitudes towards organic products.

Our thesis statements are framed as follows:

    • What causalities can be distinguished about university students positive attitudes towards organic products?

    • What sources shape university students positive attitudes associated to organic products?

    Method/Theory:

The empirical data for this essay have been obtained by using qualitative interviews which have made it possible for us to get deep and meaningful data about the informants views on how they form their attitudes about organic produce. The theoretical framework have been Fishbein and Azjen’s (1975) Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) which have served the purpose of categorising and explaining the processes for individuals forming of attitudes and in extension their behavior.

    Main Results:

The main results drawn from the empirical material show that the participants, through the process of inferential beliefs, themselves concludes that organic products are positive even though they find it hard to specify exactly where their information is gathered. However, the material show us that the informants listen to people in their close surrounding such as family and friends and that this is their primary reason for their attitudes towards organic produce. Furthermore the participants state that they do see information concerning organic produce on different media, but what stands out in the empirical data is that this type of information does not as clearly create the foundation for the participants attitudes as their surrounding and background, but rather serves as a way for the participants to confirm their beliefs and find new information surrounding this area.

Lastly we suggest that the subjective norms, found in the surrounding of our respondents, have a bigger affect not only on the intention of our informants but also in the shaping of their attitude.

We can see that the main attitude of our respondents is of a positive character and since our target group in a few years will have purchasing power we believe that the trend we see today will keep moving in the same positive direction.
