Plastic Form and the Extro- and Emergent Versions of Christopher Mlalazi’s Running with Mother2018Ingår i: Journal of African Cultural Studies, ISSN 1369-6815, E-ISSN 1469-9346, Vol. 30, nr 3, s. 356-370Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper attempts to forge new methods for reading emergent literary strategies and forms in contemporary African fiction. Arguing that the novel is no longer the most efficient literary form in environments of radically asymmetrical power and uneven and unequal development, this paper considers the formal strategies of various versions of a story by Zimbabwean writer Christopher Mlalazi. Mlalazi’s story appeared first as a short story on a Swedish blog in 2011. It was then published as a novel, Running with Mother in 2012 by Zimbabwean-based Weaver press. In that same year, the story was also adapted into a play script. The original version of the story, which was written in 2010, has been published in a book collection of Zimbabwean stories entitled Writing Lives in 2013. This kind of plasticity of literary form requires a methodology that is not only able to describe the material forces undergirding the writing, production and circulation of these texts, but one that also accounts for how such material forces – both global and local – impact on literary form.

    Abstract [en]

Planning and evaluation has become increasingly important within the Swedish public library sphere. The aim of this article is to problematize the libraries’ (the Royal Library, the regional libraries and the public libraries) task to evaluate the design and use of ‘library plans’. The task will be described in relation to the development of the Swedish library legislation and the evolution of library plans as an administrative phenomenon. The analytical focus in the article is the concept of use as applied in government practice and library practice. The empirical material consists of documents reflecting the enforcement of use of plans and evaluation of use of plans, and of qualitative interviews with library staff reflecting plans in library practice. The analysis shows how government practice in combination with library practice creates an administrative habit regarding the use, and evaluation of use of plans. Nonetheless the government practice has the first word in deciding which concepts should dominate the library administration. In the concluding discussion we argue the current library administration – and the concepts such as plans, use of plans and plan evaluation, dominating that administration – might be altered if there would be alternatives to the current administrative trends with strong influences from market economy logics.

    Abstract [en]

The object of this two years master's thesis has been to study a specific genre of personal archives by examiningthe archives of nine parents who have lost one or several infants. Using internet-based methods, (e-mail, Skypeand digital photographs), I have conducted qualitative research using a general interview guide technique. Usingresearch from archival theory as well as other fields, my material has been arranged and analysed according tothemes and recurring thoughts picked up from my informants during the interviews. My main theoretical aid has been that the role of parent who has lost a child is the starting point for the creationof the personal archives. Another important theory is my definition of the term “document” as not dependent onmedium and format, but on usage: if an object has been used as a part of an archive, it is a document. I also claimthat study of personal archives is a way to help the archival profession and Swedish archival theory to becomemore democratic and inclusive, since especially the former is mandated to reflect all of society's many manifestationsof culture and memory. The results show that the archives contain a large selection of documents in differentformats and mediums, but that they also have many similarities. This is an effect of the fact that the parentshave all had roughly the same document-creating contacts with their relatives and friends, the authorities and theother parts of society often involved in the events proceeding the child's birth and death (or sickness and death). The reasons to create and maintain a personal archive are to preserve the memories of events, people, places, thoughts and feelings associated with the child and whatever time the parents got to spend with him or her. By remembering, the parents are also confirming the child's existence and place within the family, and helping themselvesconfirm their newly acquired role as parents who have lost a child. The archives and their constituent partsare used as physical and psychological “linking objects”, to help the parents feel (at least temporary) closer totheir child by watching, touching or talking about the most important documents. These are often the ones displayedon special memory shelves, on family photo walls or in memory boxes. It follows that arrangement of thedocuments is based mostly on the emotional attachment of the parent to the individual document, and that destructionof records are extremely rare in the studied archives. Their growth diminished with time, but does notstop completely since the parents, other relatives and friends still create new documents, mostly to observe holidaysand anniversaries. Furthermore, the way the parents use their archives and its constituent parts change astime passes. Individual documents may also change their emotional and cultural significance to the parent, orgain additional ones. Some of the underlying factors behind these findings are my informants views on creating, keeping and destroying documents. They all express a need to “save everything”, and most also want to “documenteverything”. The latter, their wish to create new documents to complement the ones created primarily byothers and as a result of specific events and processes, comes from a feeling of not having enough documents inthe archives. It can also be the result of dissatisfaction with those that do exist. Finally, as is commonplace amongpersonal archives, the archives in my study have multiple record creators within the immediate family and outsideit, even though my informants are usually the main creators. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive,Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

As traditional Mexican folk music corridos have always celebrated smugglers, outlaws and bandits, and many songs, popular in Mexico and the US Southwest, have commented on drug-related issues. However, in the past decades narcocorridos added a new dimension to the complex relation of music industry and drug consumption in North America. The following essay discusses the growing popularity of the drug ballad (narcocorrido) in the context of the rise of drug related violence in Mexico and the history of corrido singing in the US-Mexico borderlands. The contemporary narcocorrido is shown as a commercialized rendering of local traditions of resistance against oppression and poverty. Ethnic roots of the music genre are exploited for marketing celebratory and heroic representations of drug related violence.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974)2019Övrigt (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The director Rainer Werner Fassbinder (1945-82) shaped 1970s German cinema like very few others. Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (Ali: Angst essen Seele auf) stands out as a particularly significant contribution to New German Cinema because of its minimalistic cinematography, the acting that references the Brechtian alienation effect, and the focus on highly relevant social controversies in post-war West German society. However, unlike most auteur cinema of the time, Fassbinder employs a melodramatic emotional guidance of the audience through shifts in camera perspective and dialogue. The romance between a Moroccan “guest worker” and an elderly German cleaner was inspired by Douglas Sirk’s melodramas of the 1950s that Fassbinder became interested in in his later period of filmmaking (Reimer 1996). Fear Eats the Soul, in certain ways, is a remake of Sirk´s All That Heaven Allows (1955) that tells the love story of a wealthy widow and her significantly younger gardener in a New England small town. The social environment of the well-respected family strongly objects to the marriage across class boundaries. However, Fassbinder’s melodrama reshapes the plot by adding racialized and national difference as central issues that make the relationship controversial. Moreover, he uses German society as a setting, a society that is shown to be still struggling with the history of its Nazi-past while at the same time having to come to terms with the presence of migrant workers and racist anti-Arab sentiment, which intensified after the PLO-linked attack on the Israeli team at the Munich summer Olympics in 1972 (which the film refers to a few times). Even decades later the complex filmic treatment of anti-migration sentiments, anti-Arab prejudices, and racism still seems to be highly relevant as a critical analysis of not only German but European societies that currently face new populist nationalism and anti-refugee politics. Fear Eats the Soul can be read as a symbolic treatise on mechanisms of social control and exclusion and on the destructive power of ideologies defending community cohesion and notions of purity in modern societies. The metaphorics of the guest and the host mold this disillusioning and painful love story.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses how the visual arts engage in representing border crossing experiences and, more speci cally, how art interrupts border security practices and their rituals. After introducing the history of North American border art and di erent approaches to issues of border crossing, the paper will concentrate on speci c works. It argues that the selected works of art perform interventions that confront the public with the borderlands as a place of violence and death. At the same time, artists are shown to employ di erent artistic strategies of symbolically re-possessing the borderlands for undocumented migrants who – when crossing it – experienced it as an existential obstacle.

    Abstract [en]

The chapter explores the emergence and construction of the Americas as a space of historical, social and cultural unity as well as a locale of specifically New World, enlightened knowledge production. Heide discusses how this political and symbolic space shapes travel reports of the early 19th century and how they comment on, and imagine, national differences and notions of US nationalism. The analysis of three reports, authored by Zebulon Pike, Henry Ker, and Henry Marie Brackenridge shows that what the historian Gretchen Murphy (2005) termed the “hemispheric frame” functions as a multifaceted concept that serves such different purposes, such as (1) marking the difference between Europe and the Americas, (2) claiming anti-colonial and creole commonalities, (3) endorsing US superiority and (4) legitimating early endeavors of US empire building.

Hong Kong at a crossroad: Exploring its changing relationship with China and the West through foreign real estate investment, education and consumption practice2015Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

It has been eighteen years since Hong Kong's sovereignty was transferred from Britain to back to mainland China. Although Hong Kong was promised that its autonomy and way of life would remain unchanged for fifty years until 2047, the ongoing political uncertainty and the influx of the underprivileged as well as super-rich mainland Chinese have impacted Hongkongers' everyday life. Some Hongkongers have welcomed the wealth and opportunities that the mainland Chinese bring to the Special Administrative Region, whilst others have been less approving of their lack of respect for Hong Kong's culture and society. Moreover, the recent Umbrella Movement that took place in September 2014 has further challenged the identity of Hong Kong citizens in which they are even more concerned, confused and consternated about their future.

This working paper examines the ways that Hongkongers deal with internal and external uncertainties through the way they invest in foreign real estates, decide on their children's education and everyday consumption practices.

This research draws on my previous doctoral work on the geographies of consumption in Hong Kong and my current postdoctoral research on the way that Hong Kong investors purchase residential properties in the UK and other parts of the world. This paper provides a snapshot of 2015's Hong Kong and how Hongkongers confront the conflicting relationship between the consumption of western values and their traditional Chinese identity.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has had a long lasting connection with the Ottoman Empire. From the Viking age to the 18th century warfare and cooperation has been ongoing. Even the Silk Road was a time extended to the Baltic. That means 1000 years of cultural contacts. After the battle at Mohacs in Hungary 1687, Swedish soldiers and officers looted the Ottoman war baggage. A great number of objects, today artefacts, were transported to Sweden. Among them, in the collection of Skokloster Castle, we will today find tents with carpets, used by high ranking Ottoman officers as well as high-tech composite bows used by cavalry soldiers. This paper discusses why the mentioned textiles and wooden objects, made for use in the Mediterranean climate, has survived so well for more than 300 years in the Baltic climate far north in Europe.

Skokloster Castle is a heavy stone and brick building without any climatisation. The castle has only open fireplaces and ovens and they have not been used for the last 300 years. There is no electric lighting installed why visitors have to admire the 17th century interior design and the large paintings collection in daylight, summertime only. We have here a very good example of preventive conservation by passive means. The main philosophy of the conservators and curators working at Skokloster Castle with the large collection (50 000 items) is to “let it rest in peace”. The indoor climate at Skokloster castle has been under observation for generations. The castle and its collections were turned into an entailed estate already in 1701 by the owner Margareta Juliana Wrangel, the oldest daughter and heir of the founder of Skokloster castle. This was for tax reasons but also to preserve the memory of her great father, the fieldmarchal. That means that by law the proprietors had to write detailed inventories for every generation of owners. Thus today´s conservators and curators have a detailed history of the preservation climate and the conditions of every object in the collection. The indoor climate follows the outdoor over the season. Stormy weather increases the air infiltration and disturbs the stable indoor climate. Subsequently warm summers may create high relative humidity which is a risk for growing mould. Never- theless the mayor part of the collection is in good condition. Today we have year long observations of temperature, relative humidity and air change rate in the castle, which will be presented and discussed in the paper.

This paper intends to invite to a discussion of best preventive climate and conservation actions having the coming climate change in mind.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate how the meaning of the concept of authenticity has been used in arguments about the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. The museum, which opened for the first time in 1866, was closed for restoration, renovation and other engagements during 2013-2018. After the reopening, a debate took place in the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. In the debate there were people who argued that the reconstruction had erased the museum’s history and replaced it with modern design. Other people argued that the reconstruction had made the building more true to its history as older reconstructions had distorted the original building.

The main source material for the present study consists of a final report of the project made by the National Property Board, selected debate articles from the debate on the reconstruction in Svenska Dagbladet, and an interview and two mail conversations that have been made with persons involved in the project. Through argumentation analysis, arguments from the final report, the debate in Svenska Dagbladet, the interview and the mail conversations have been analyzed. The arguments selected from the source material are arguments that either indicate that the authenticity has been preserved or that the authenticity has not been preserved. The thesis does not intend to determine whether the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum has preserved the authenticity or not, it is the argumentation about this issue that is to be investigated. The reason is that the perception differs between different people, different contexts and different views.

The analysis shows that the arguments claiming that the authenticity has not been preserved above all relate to the building's younger reconstructions with its additions that were removed during the current reconstruction. Some debaters argue that the building's younger history also has a value that should be protected. In the end it comes down to what kind of authenticity one intends to preserve. In the project, the experience values have been prioritized before the material values, which indicates that the authenticity from a material perspective may have decreased while the functional authenticity of the building has increased.

The arguments that favour that the authenticity has been preserved are primarily based on the view that great emphasis has been placed on the preservation of the building's cultural-historical value. During the project one has also been inspired by the building's original drawings made by the building's architect Friedrich August Stüler, which indicates that the authenticity of the original building has been strengthened.

The thesis ends with a final discussion where the result of the analysis is presented in relation to the theoretical framework of the thesis. This is done in order to answer the research questions. The main research question for the thesis has been; "How has the meaning of authenticity been presented in the final report, in the debate and by people who have worked with the reconstruction of Nationalmuseum?”.

Memories of Life and Death: Three Practices of Remembering in Post-Dictatorial Argentina2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Bank Identity: Banks, ID Cards, and the Emergence of a Financial Identification Society in Sweden2018Ingår i: Enterprise & society, ISSN 1467-2227, E-ISSN 1467-2235, Vol. 19, nr 2, s. 391-429Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Today nearly the entire adult population in Sweden uses a digital BankID for more purposes than only financial ones. Issuing identity documents is commonly perceived as a task for state authorities, but in Swedish society banks have played a dominant role as identificators. The first contribution of this article is that it explains this unique emergence of bank identity and traces the historical roots of a financial identification society to the mid-1960s. Banks started issuing standardized identity cards as a complement to the new system of paying salaries and wages by direct deposit to checking accounts, and these cards eventually became quasi-official identity documents. The Swedish story thus contrasts the scholarship on identification and state control. By treating identity as both a socio-cultural category and a materialization of a technology of control, I argue that the formalization of official identity documents for everyday use was intertwined with the creation of new financial identities. The introduction and general distribution of ID cards were parts of a process whereby wage earners became financial consumers, and the banks transformed themselves into retail companies. My second contribution therefore relates to the scholarly narrative on the financialization of everyday life since the 1980s. While the mass move to financial identification in Sweden, highlighted in this article, certainly fits the content of this narrative, it questions its chronology.

Golden everyday. Housewifely consumerism and the domestication of banks in 1960s Sweden2015Ingår i: Le Mouvement social, ISSN 0027-2671, E-ISSN 1961-8646, nr 250, s. 41-63Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The paper explores cultural historical and gender aspects of the financialisation of everyday life through a case study of an extensive Swedish bank campaign in the 1960s targeting women. I analyse the so called Golden Everyday conferences (1961-1969) as representations of popular finance and I focus on two questions: firstly how the financial identities for a broad population were constructed and enacted; and secondly, which role the bank adopted in relation to its (presumptive) clients. The development of retail banking has been roughly outlined in historical studies of banking, but the challenge faced by the banks, and their strategies for entangling finances in everyday practices has not been looked upon in detail. Through the case of the Golden Everyday conferences I argue that in he 1960s a domestication of banks occurred intertwined with the “bancarisation of households” described in the history and sociology of banking.

I highlight how emotionality, familiarity and references to consumer skills were used to domesticate a new kind of popular banking. The conferences attempted to reconcile the “hostile worlds” of economy and intimacy. They furthermore framed everyday finance by a ‘housewifely’, consumerist and familiar discourse, which reinforced the bank’s new role in managing personal finance on an everyday basis. This new line was made practically possible by the introduction of a system of direct deposits and cheque accounts for salaries and wages, but the new practices were to be extended also to those who did not lift own salaries and even more importantly needed to be rooted in a domestic context – for both women and men. The financial identity that came into being in the Golden Everyday conferences differed from the identities emphasised by scholars of financialisation of everyday life or those writing about popular finance. The new clients of the Swedish bank, might very well have been engaged in investing, saving or borrowing, but they were addressed here as consumers of financial products. They were supposed to choose and buy in the “department store of finances”.

The bank certainly represented itself as a “department store” of finances. At the same time it also institutionalised the expertise about family economics/personal finances, an expert knowledge that previously belonged to many different governmental and non-profit organisations. Thereby the topics of sharing within the family were discussed in the same context as shareholding.

Money cards and identity cards.: De-vicingconsumer credit in post-war Sweden2020Ingår i: Journal of Cultural Economy, ISSN 1753-0350, E-ISSN 1753-0369Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article has a twofold ambition. First, exploring the peculiar Swedish case, it contributes to the international history of credit cards dominated by the American narrative. Early adaptation of new banking technologies was in Sweden combined with negative general attitudes towards consumer credit. Although introduced early in a European comparison, credit cards needed to be reconceptualised, reshaped, and renamed to be accepted. Second, the paper’s contribution to the study of financial products and their intertwining with values, affects, and the rhythm of the everyday is that it reveals the role of de-vicing(Lee & Helgesson 2016), which refers to the strategies conducted by card issuers while dealing with the moral resistance. Marketers exploited the non-credit properties of the card in order to spread its use into the everyday practices of consumers. The card itself was turned into a device for de-vicing – destigmatizing – consumer credit. By looking at the technical and cultural arrangements built into the card, I unpack the workings of two de-vicing strategies which reconfigured cards 1. as modern money and 2. as membership/identity cards. The Swedish example reveals how plastic cards were reshaped in the forcefield between money and identity and became instrumental in reorganizing moralities of debt.

Hur spel blir kulturarv: En fallstudie om kulturarvsproduktion utifrån praktiker i Play Beyond Play på Tekniska museet2019Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This research explores games as cultural heritage. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how games as cultural heritage is made. The study seeks answers to which principal museum practices that are being carried out in the work with games as cultural heritage and what constitutes them. Furthermore this study explains how these practices influences the making of games as cultural heritage. The analysis has been carried out on Play Beyond Play, a game exhibition made at Tekniska museet in Stockholm 2018, where practices is being understood and analyzed from a practice theory perspective with the use of games as boundary objects. The empiric data was collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with people working with the content of the exhibition and an place-based observation of the exhibition itself. The concept of ”anchoring practices” has been used as an analythic method to find and sort which principal practices that were carried out. The analysis resulted in six principal practices in the work of knowledge and mediation of games as techinchal development, the role of playablity, the matter of thinking ctitically, the effect of practical limitations and possibilities, the implementation and use of research, and the certification of games as cultural heritage. These practices influence the making of games as cultural heritage by defining games, how knowledge about games should be carried out and why games is important as cultural heritage through the location, role and area of focus at Tekniska museet. The study contributes with explanations and reinforces the connection between practices and the use of objects to create and mediate knowledge about games, where the knowledge carried out is affected by the context where it is being created through a longer period of time.
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In recent centuries the Swedish Tiled Stove has varied in its design with an aesthetic evolutionary history that has not only followed the architectural and artistic ideals but also the taste in stove design. The heat source has varied depending on the regional traditions and where it was located within the country, but the inside of the construction was of a similar five channel system. The purpose of this paper is to study and compare the design of tile matrices made by Emil Petterson with other Swedish stoves.

The following questions will be addressed:

What characterized the production of a small scale tile stove workroom during the years 1900-50? Which main styles can be described as Emil Pettersson’s ideal while producing his matrices? And finally, is it possible to study the tile stove matrices as objects of historical and cultural significance, and what difficult methodological issues might occur in the doing of it?

To answer these questions I will present the results of the documentation of Pettersson’s tile matrices with detailed historical categorizations and schedules. The conclusion shows that Pettersson as a stove builder and -producer was characterized by eclectic ideals and a design shape based on more liberal interpretations of contemporary trends. The studying of tile stove matrices showed that, despite its difficulties regarding the inverted shapes, it is a barer of great historical and cultural value and that it plays a key part in the historical context of tile stove ovens.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis was to investigate how museum stores are governed, with a focus on museum stores situated in museums in Stockholm and on museums stores which are part of a government agency. The purpose was also to investigate the relationship between the museum and the consumption in the museum store in general.

The thesis shows that museum stores which are part of a government agency are governed by their appropriation directions, including the direction that the museum stores must be fully financed. However, the museum stores are also influenced by guidelines that have not been written down, expectations from the museum and from museum patrons. Other factors not within the control of the museum were also of importance, and could limit the choices available for the museum store managers as well as be a source of inspiration. The result also shows that the museum store and the consumption it’s associated with, is seen as either a threat, a necessity or a possibility: The museum store is often viewed as being at odds with the main role of museums in general, while also being considered a necessity, helping the museum to meet the patron’s expectations. In some cases the museum could benefit from the museum store, due to the stores’ possibility of improving upon the museum visit, or making a profit usable in other museum activities.

The source material was gathered from the websites of international and national organisations within the museum field. Material was also gathered during interviews with museum store managers in Stockholm. The theory used was cultural economics and consumption studies. The method for this essay was interviews, minor field studies, linguistic analysis. The focus of this essay was how the museum store is governed. The essay does not, for example, research how the museum visitors or museum patrons experienced the shop.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is exploring Donna Haraways cyborg theory, in a perspective of Library- and Information Science. The investigation aims to better understand the occupation of librarians, and their position within knowledge creation through a digital and cyber technologically evolving society. The cyborg figuration, is making it possible to look at the librarian’s occupation in a postmodern-, posthuman-, and cyberfeminist perspective. The cyborg figure is a posthuman figure, a fusion between human and technology. Because of its interdisciplinary composition, the cyborg is cross-bordering and diversified in its nature. In a combination with Library- and Information Science the cyborg theory can produce new perspectives on our knowledge production.

The empirical investigation is made within the context of academic library research support, and Open Science. Throughout this development it becomes clear that the librarian is working in a coexistence between human and technology. This paper then demonstrates, that there is an analogy between the librarian and the cyborg figure, and especially in the context of the academic library. In this analogy, the cyborg librarian is constituted as a central phenomenon in a line of several developmental events – concerning the accessibility and dissemination of scientific knowledge creation, through the digital environment.

The cyborg librarian is then able to use the cyborg theory in this context, to cross over borders and create new perspectives. It can also create pedagogic tools for information instructions, that contribute to a deeper and more complex insight in knowledge production, as reality production. By evolving a critical, multimodal and reflective information literacy, and thereby also supporting the library institution in adopting to a postmodern society. Haraways cyborg feminism is also applying a perspective of social justice into the context of literacy instructions, whilst working in the same spirit as the democratic mission of the library institution.
