    Abstract [en]

A central theme in this dissertation is the relationship between narrative conduct and narrative modes or ways of speaking. Narrative conduct is defined as either authorial (from the perspective of the narrator) or figural (from the perspective of characters). An investigation of previous narratology research indicates that there has been no systematic description of this relationship between conduct and mode. A model is therefore proposed in which authorial and figural elements of conduct are identified and described as they appear in the following modes: narrator commentary (comment about the story or the telling of the story), narrative (the narrator's telling of the story or bringing the story forward), indirect speech or thought, free indirect speech, direct speech or thought, and interior monologue. Because direct speech or dialogue in narratives has been evaluated differently by narratologists, the emphasis in the present study is on an investigation of the role of dialogue in narrative works.

A general analysis of narrative conduct in Theodor Fontane's Effi Briest is carried out by applying the model of narrative modes through which authorial and figural components in the novel are separated from each other. Certain passages of the novel, especially dialogue, are scrutinized using this model. An important finding is the establishing of the existence of different kinds of authorial elements in direct speech. One such element is authorial anticipation of the future, or authorial prolepsis, when this appears as expressed by a character, and the character does not know the future.

This investigation of Fontane's novel further indicates that Fontane makes use of a mixture of direct and indirect speech to which the term "hybrid speech" is applied.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This master thesis is thematically treating three short stories of Andrey Platonov: Bessmertie, Fro and Vozvraščenie. The purpose is to examine how Platonov presents the Soviet family and to what extent it fits the Soviet family politics. The family portraits are analysed in comparison with the guiding principles of the doctrine of Socialist Realism with the trends of Socialist Realism and family policy of the time into consideration.

The first part describes Platonov’s life, the Socialist Realism, and the family policies of the Soviet Union. It also discusses how the influences of the time could have affected the author’s later works. The second part consists of an analysis of the three short stories mentioned above.

The conclusion is that there is an opposition between the task of working and family life in the stories. Despite the fact that Platonov problematizes this opposition, there are few signs that he writes with an intended direct opposition towards the Soviet power or censorship. The themes of his stories are instead in fact following the development of contemporary family politics, and that is a development with a Soviet family that is “withering away”.

Translation Strategies in Medieval Hagiography: Observations on the Slavic Reception of the Byzantine Vita of Saint Onuphrius2018Inngår i: Translation in Russian Context: Culture, Politics, Identity / [ed] Brian James Baer and Susanna Witt, New York and London: Routledge, 2018, s. 19-36Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Established research practices with regard to early Slavic translations tend to focus on lexical features for text-critical purposes, primarily with the aim of ascertaining the linguistic origin of a translated work. Taking as its starting point theoretical perspectives developed within contemporary translation studies, this study focuses on early translation strategies, discussing puzzling textual elements such as the transformation of buffaloes in the Greek text into antelopes in one translation and into camels in texts belonging to other traditions. Lexical transformations of this kind, which at first sight might appear to be errors, can be explained as a conscious choice or strategy on the part of the translator. The article argues that several strategies conceptualized in contemporary translation theory, such as localization, domestication, exoticization amongst other were applied by medieval translators. This study examines translations into several target languages for the purpose of comparison in order to explore the phenomenon of early text transmission.

2007Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is a study of manuscript material containing the Life of Onuphrius (Onuphrius vita). The purpose of the study is to investigate the history of the Onuphrius text in the Slavic hagiographic tradition and to publish a critical edition of the Slavic text.

The Life of Onuphrius circulated widely throughout the entire Christian world. It is unclear whether the original was written in Coptic or Greek. The present study is the first attempt to survey Slavic, above all Russian, hagiographic material that contains the Life of Onuphrius and an attempt to understand how the manuscripts relate to each other. The text critical examination leads to the conclusion that the texts concerning the Life of Onuphrius known to the Slavs originate from two Greek versions. Everything points to the fact that the text which circulated most widely among the Russians was made from a Bulgarian translation. The study does not rule out the possibility of other translations. Text T was chosen as the main text for the present edition since it is the earliest and best preserved Russian version of the Life. An archeographic description and a linguistic analysis of the main text are given. The study concludes with the edition itself with a critical apparatus presenting variant readings that allow a reconstruction of a further six Slavic manuscripts. The main text is presented in a diplomatic edition without any emendations. The work also contains a lemmatisized index of all the words that occur in our edition of text T.

(Re)constructing a Saint’s Life in an Electronic Edition

The necessity of electronic editions of medieval texts is obvious to everyone who needs apply to primary sources for studies in linguistics, paleography, codicology and textual criticism. The kind of electronic edition I have in mind is not simply a scanned copy of a manuscript, nor of a critical edition, but one that makes use of all the advantages of modern computer technology, such as footnotes and comments, hypertext, the possibility of generating different views and versions, automatic indexing, etc. Among the foremost assets of electronic editions is that they make the sources accessible, and allow one to avoid time-consuming work in numerous libraries and archives, not to mention that electronic resources minimize the devastating manual handling of manuscripts. The possibility of adding supplements and corrections in accordance with new findings is perhaps still more valuable, something that is impossible in a traditional paper edition. An adequate electronic version should contain both a reproduction of the manuscript as well as a typeset version, with support for features such as searching at different levels, processing of forms and lists, etc. An editorial work of this type will meet with technical and structural difficulties.

Akoella ja susilla on mualima pilattu: Naisen arvostus Suomen kansan sananparsikirjassa2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [fi]

    Abstract [en]

In the centuries of conflict between the Ottoman Empire and various European states, polemical manuscripts, pamphlets and books on Turkish topics were common in Europe. Some texts reappeared at intervals, adapted to different circumstances. A certain category consisted of texts that were allegedly written by the Ottoman sultan himself. This paper deals with one such text, which proclaims to be an instruction from the sultan to his subjects on ceremonies and processions to be performed in order to please Allah. Variations of this text appeared in 1686–87, 1697–98 and 1716–17, in manuscripts and printed pamphlets in different languages. It was translated into Russian twice: in 1697 and 1716. The 1697 translation was only recently discovered among documents from Peter I’s Grand Embassy. This paper examines the textual relationships between the versions that appeared in different decades and their historical contexts, and contains an edition of the previously unpublished 1697 Russian translation.
