The Tragedy of Liberty: Civic Concern and Disillusionment in James Thomson's Tragic Dramas2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Early eighteenth-century serious drama often addresses the significance of liberty. This study focuses on the theme of civic and individual liberty in the little known tragedies of James Thomson, Sophonisba, Agamemnon and Tancred and Sigismunda, all of which problematise the condition of liberty under the influence of ideology.

Situating the plays in the political, ideological and philosophical debates of the day, this study, like previous research in the field, recognises Thomson’s connection with the political opposition to the Whig ministry. However, the plays are examined from a historical perspective as a response to tenets that, although similar to those embraced by the political opposition, were actually part of government Whig and Tory ideologies, as well as of contemporary thought about the individual as a social being.

The plays enact, it is argued, the problems involved in establishing and maintaining civic and individual liberty. What emerges is a set of binary relationships: private liberty is opposed to public duty; one country’s national liberty is set against another’s; a class-related stress on public social virtue is pitted against a more privately oriented social virtue. The tensions generated by these conflicting concepts of liberty influence the actions of the characters and the outcome of the tragedies. The tragic effect of Thomson’s plays arises, in large part, from an implicit suggestion that ideology is an insufficient means of upholding civic and individual liberty. The very tragedy of liberty springs from the realisation that civic liberty may in fact be impossible to sustain.

By revealing an inherent ambivalence towards ideology, the analyses of the plays corroborate the idea that Thomson is on the fringe of the Opposition but cannot be said to be a mouthpiece for Bolingbroke’s group of patriots. Moreover, rather than extolling ideology, Thomson’s plays question it, which moderates the commonly held view of him as a didactic playwright. Finally, Thomson’s tragedies, it is shown, challenge what appeared to be an accepted ideological stance. The relative complexity that his plays offer in terms of querying current notions of freedom and liberty’s possible realisation makes his plays some of the most thought-provoking of their time.

"En damm mot tidens ström": kritiken mot biskoparna i det svenska stånds- och enhetssamhället vid mitten av 1800-talet2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to elucidate how people in a household-based pre-industrial agrarian economy acted during a period of great changes. The household is seen as a meaning-creating sym-bol in the local culture. The concept of gender is used for the meaning-creating categories of male and female, while the concept household strategies refers to the collective principles that have led to observable patterns of behav-iour within households.

In Bjuråker land fragmentation was fast and far-reaching compared to other areas. Household strategies were aimed at land distribution and transfer within fami-lies, thereby countering the pressure of the increasing population. Flax growing and linen weaving was an established household strategy, and work for the ironworks made a break-through in the late 1820’s. The gender system established the framework for the utilisation of the available workforce, and the gender division of labour expressed the power relationship between the sexes, where men held the superior position within and outside households.

Water-powered flax-processing plants became widely used locally in the early 1800. Power relationships in households with regard to work and property were reproduced in the use of this new technology. Eight peasant households is studied with accordance to land transfers, sale of linen fabric and work performed for the ironworks. Minutes from the church council’s hearings shows an increasing number of marital conflicts from ca. 1810. It is argued that household strategies were initially aimed primarily at the reproduction and im-provement of the farm household and at transferring the property to the chosen male succes-sor. Ancillary industries became increasingly integrated into house-hold strategies. Peasants’ households appears to have been more anxious to maintain gender distinctions in labour, than were landless households. The linen industry went from being a "prosperity-oriented" ancil-lary industry to being more like a classic proto-industry: a neces-sary source of income for land-poor households. The key cultural symbols, the master and the mistress, remained important in determining people’s actions, and gender-related power structures were repro-duced both in the practice of property transfer and in the gender distribution of labour.

Esculapius’ De stomacho: Edited with an Introduction, Translation, and Commentary2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation contains an edition, followed by an English translation, of chapter 21, De stomacho, from the so-called Esculapius or Liber Esculapii. The dissertation offers a diplomatic-interpretative edition of the Latin text of the manuscript Uppsala C 664, a miscellaneous medical manuscript containing i.a. the chapter De stomacho. Liber Esculapii, a work on chronic illnesses, was compiled some time in late antiquity from Methodist and Dogmatic sources. Part of Esculapius is almost certainly a translation of a Greek source, or based on a previous translation. In the extant manuscripts it is usually preceded by a work on acute illnesses, the author of which is referred to as Aurelius. Esculapius’ text is partly based on the Medicinales responsiones of Caelius Aurelianus and can be of use in reconstructing lost parts of the text of Caelius. It also exhibits strong similarities with substantial parts of the Greek treatise De re medica of Paulus Nicaeus. Esculapius is preserved in a large number of early mediaeval manuscripts and was an influential source of mediaeval compilations, such as Gariopontus and Practica Petroncelli. A manuscript of Esculapius was probably also used for the medical glosses of Liber glossarum.

The present work consists of an introduction describing medical schools in antiquity and discussing the date, sources and influence of Esculapius. This is followed by a description of the language of Esculapius, the extant manuscripts, and the textual tradition, text, an English translation, a commentary, and studies of some words of special interest.

Nils Lindbergs körmusik: Analys av tre stycken ur "O Mistress mine".2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nina Fredriksson: Nils Lindbergs körmusik. Analys av tre stycken ur O Mistress mine. Uppsala: Musikvetenskap, 60 p., 2002.

Dessa är Shall I compare thee to a summer's day, Encouragements to a lover samt Go, love!y Rose.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines a commercial media culture as articulated by a television production company in Stockholm, Sweden, and is based on nine months of extended fieldwork. The dissertation discusses the production process, its problems and constraints, and the role of the producer using a theoretical framework elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu. The TV producers are involved in a constant process of interpretation, evaluation and negotiation related to the symbolic and economic power relationships that determine the field. The practical production cannot be reduced to a one-way communication system. Commercial TV production involves more than supplying the channels with those programs they demand and attracting the desired target groups; programs produced at the company must be "good" and give a "value" to the viewers. The production process implies a tightly interwoven relationship between the producer and the audience, conceived of in terms of "the average person". The producers create an image of an audience based on statistical figures, reference persons, viewer ratings and of themselves functioning as surrogate audience. This constructed viewer wants something more than pure entertainment. The public-educator ideal that has been a reason for the Swedish public-service-television's authority and legitimacy, has come to be an important component of the television produced at the described television company. A public-service tradition is reformulated to fit into a modern, commercial context, at the same time as it legitimizes and gives meaning to its own enterprise. The created viewer's demand for entertaining knowledge and information is satisfied.

    Abstract [en]

In the complex of problems concerning women and fertility there is a focal point where central issues meet. The aim of this study is to draw up conceptions that can be of use to individual women who relate their fertile life situations to issues regarding the meaning of their lives. By means of these conceptions I wish to influence cultural, religious and political contexts that shape the sphere of ideas and the life conditions of women during their fertile years.

The study discusses which premises that can be developed about the nature of reality if women’s experience of fertility is a fundamental prerequisite when forming theories concerning ontological categories. What significance can the formation of such theories have for the question of the meaning of life? The problem is illuminated by altering between the context of experience-based narratives, i.e. a fictional narrative and a midwife’s narrative, and a philosophical exploration of the narrative context.

The study has resulted in: (1) A phenomenological contribution, which means that the reader is involved in the conceptions that concern the experience of life’s meaning and its context. (2) A contribution to feminist theory, which involves a critique of the patriarchal ideas about women’s fertility, and also the creation of ontological concepts inspired by what happens at the moment of birth. Central concepts here are active and passive, body and mind, state and force, work and life act. These concepts become a fundamental condition for the ontological category of body subject and the idea of life as context. (3) A contribution to the philosophy of religion, which leads to a focus on people’s bodily and mental experiences as a base from which the question of the nature of reality is posed. The method of the study has been to create the conditions for discussing issues about the meaning of life by means of altering inadequate ontological categories.
