    Abstract [en]

Sweden has undertaken major national reforms of its school sector, which, consequently, has been classified as one of the most decentralized ones in the OECD. This paper investigates whether local tax base, grants, and preferences affected local school resources differently as decentralization took place. We find that municipal tax base affects per pupil spending in the same way regardless of whether the school sector is centralized or decentralized, but has a smaller effect on teacher–pupil ratio after the reforms. The less-targeted grants are the fewer teachers per pupil do the municipalities employ. The results for local preferences are less clear-cut.

Effects Of Decentralization On School Resources: Sweden 1989-20022007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has undertaken major national reforms of its school sector which, con- sequently, has been classified as one of the most decentralized ones in the OECD. This paper investigates whether school resources became more un- equally distributed across municipalities in connection with the reforms and if local tax base, grants, and preferences affected local school resources differently as decentralization took place. Using municipal data the paper studies how per pupil spending and the teacher-pupil ratio has evolved over the period 1989– 2002, separating between three different waves of decentralization. As nothing much has happened with per pupil spending, the teacher-pupil ratio has become more evenly distributed across municipalities. Municipal tax base affects per pupil spending in the same way regardless of whether the school sector is cen- tralized or decentralized, but has a smaller effect on teacher-pupil ratio after the reforms. The less targeted grants are, the fewer teachers per pupil do the mu- nicipalities employ. The results for local preferences are less clear cut.

Cooperation in rehabilitating between the Swedish Insurance Agency and the Employment Office: An analysis of the outcome of the Strengthened Rehabilitation Cooperation and FAROS, with emphasis on the differences between specific diagnoses and gender 2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis examines if the likelihood of full-time sickness differs between diagnoses and between gender after the individual on sick leave participated in collaboration between Försäkringskassan and Arbetsförmedlingen. Hence, the thesis studies if individuals with certain diagnoses are more or less likely full-time sick after participating in the collaboration, and if there are differences between men and women. In particular, individual data on participants of the Strengthened Rehabilitation Cooperation and FAROS is used. The analysis also evaluates and compares the two collaborations by the likelihood of full-time sickness in their respective participants. Logit regression models are used to calculate the probability of being full-time sick one year after the start of the specific collaboration. In order to provide sick individuals with suitable rehabilitation measures, research contributing with information on potential differences in response is essential. The results of this thesis indicate that participants in the Strengthened Rehabilitation Cooperation are generally more likely full-time sick one year after the start of the collaboration than individuals in FAROS. Individuals in the Strengthened Rehabilitation Cooperation with musculoskeletal diagnoses have lower probability of full-time sickness and individuals in FAROS with musculoskeletal diagnoses seems to have higher probability of full-time sickness, compared to individuals in the respective collaboration with psychiatric diagnoses. The results found indicate that the introduction of the Strengthened Rehabilitation Cooperation, on average, increased the probability of full-time sickness. Further, the thesis shows that women are, on average, more likely to be full-time sick one year after the start of the cooperation than men. This indicates a troublesome inequality between genders in the individual’s response to currently used rehabilitation measures.

Inflytandet av ”irrelevanta” alternativ till resmål: En studie utifrån teorin om rationella val, antagandet om oberoendet av irrelevanta alternativoch prospektteorin.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Omaka Par?: En studie om ungdomars attityd till Uppsala Stadsteater2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Business Intelligence Implementation from a User Perspective: A case study of an international company implementing BI in the procurement function2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study investigates what factors are important during the business intelligence implementation, and also how those factors affect the perception of the BI project according to the end-users. The study was conducted as a qualitative single case study where the data was mainly collected using semi-structured interviews in two rounds. The studied case was a proof of concept project in an international company, where they implemented business intelligence within the procurement function in three of their subsidiaries to determine if they would implement BI in the whole group. During the first round of interviews, three factors were identified as important namely, ownership, involvement and evaluation. During the second round, the end-users expressed some deficiencies that could be improved in regard to the three factors. The study concludes that the factors ownership, involvement and evaluation were important even though evaluation was the only factor that affected the end-users’ perception of the implementation. However, their acceptance of the project was not affected due to the fact that they had expressed such a strong need for BI a long time before the project.

Hållbarhetsarbete i stora företag: En studie om lag (2016:947) om ändring i årsredovisningslagen (1995:1554) och dess påverkan på företagsledningens hållbarhetsarbete2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Competiveness among apparel manufacturers in Istanbul: An industry analysis2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper is the result of a minor field study conducted in Istanbul, Turkey, during the period of November and December 2007. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the current business environment for apparel manufacturing in Istanbul. Research was carried out through an industry analysis in terms of competition and potential future development for apparel manufacturers.

The research has been carried out through interviews with actors related to the apparel manufacturing segment. Interviewees include five manufacturers, two sourcing agents, one trade organization and one professor with research in the area.

Our findings concerning the business environment are based on Michael E. Porters theoretical framework on “How Competitive Forces Shape Strategy”. In the case of Turkish apparel manufacturers this paper concludes how the barriers of entry for new actors are high, unless integrating forward. Additionally in general terms the suppliers have a weak bargaining position while customers are relatively strong in the bargaining process. The rivalry among apparel manufacturers is low, but it can be stated how less differentiated manufacturer experience significant higher level of rivalry. Further on this paper also concludes how these factors not are affected by any substitute products, much due to the broad scope of the study.

In respect to these factors a general strategy used by apparel manufactures has been identified as they try to affect the balance of these competitive forces through e.g. differentiation and vertical integration.

Knowledge Retention in Practice: How organizations avoid knowledge loss through proactive and reactive knowledge retention processes2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis's purpose was to gain a deeper understanding of how organizations create knowledge retention (KR), both proactively (day-to-day basis) and reactively (when an employee decides to resign), to avoid knowledge loss. A qualitative multiple case study was conducted through semi-structured interviews, with eight respondents from eight different organizations. An analytical model based on Levy’s (2011) KR framework and Nonaka and Takeuchi's (1995) knowledge spiral model was developed as a tool to understand the KR process in practice. The study found that all studied organizations worked proactively to retain knowledge, either structured or unstructured. The respondents with a structured, proactive KR process did not apply a reactive KR process, showing that they are more prepared for handling potential knowledge loss when employees resign. The respondents that did not apply a structured, proactive KR process applied a reactive knowledge retention process, where the main explanation for this was lack of time or unawareness of the process. Furthermore, no clear groups emerged in the empirical material as the companies faced different challenges at each stage of the analytical model. Lastly, the study concludes that these findings could be particularly relevant for organizations seeking to conduct KR processes to avoid losing valuable knowledge.

Sambandet mellan aktiekurseroch hållbarhetsprestation: En eventstudie om Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the impact of index inclusions and index exclusions on the share prices of European companies by studying companies that are included or excluded from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Europe during the period 2017-2019. Furthermore, Swedish companies that have been included, excluded or retained their place in the index during the same time period are also specifically examined. This due to the increased interest and supply of ESG- related investments in the world, especially in Europe. A standard event study method based on the market model is used to investigate this possible connection in the short term. We cannot find strong evidence that an announcement has any evident impact on companies' return on investment for either European or Swedish companies. On the other hand, we find that Swedish companies that have retained their place or are included in the index show a positive average cumulative abnormal return (CAR) between two and ten days after the announcement date. Despite this, the results cannot prove the index's relevance to the market which supports previous studies.

Intolerans - effekten av ekonomisk frihet och fraktionalisering2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Quantifying Bias from Measurable and Unmeasurable Confounders Across Three Domains of Individual Determinants of Political Preferences2023In: Political Analysis, ISSN 1047-1987, E-ISSN 1476-4989, Vol. 31, no 2, p. 181-194Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A core part of political research is to identify how political preferences are shaped. The nature of these questions is such that robust causal identification is often difficult to achieve, and we are not seldom stuck with observational methods that we know have limited causal validity. The purpose of this paper is to measure the magnitude of bias stemming from both measurable and unmeasurable confounders across three broad domains of individual determinants of political preferences: socio-economic factors, moral values, and psychological constructs. We leverage a unique combination of rich Swedish registry data for a large sample of identical twins, with a comprehensive battery of 34 political preference measures, and build a meta-analytical model comparing our most conservative observational (naive) estimates with discordant twin estimates. This allows us to infer the amount of bias from unobserved genetic and shared environmental factors that remains in the naive models for our predictors, while avoiding precision issues common in family-based designs. The results are sobering: in most cases, substantial bias remains in naive models. A rough heuristic is that about half of the effect size even in conservative observational estimates is composed of confounding.

Kapitalstruktur - Förklarande faktorer för variationen i svenska företags skuldsättning2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sell in may and go away: Effektens existens och utveckling på Stockholmsbörsen2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Organisationers motivationsarbete i traineeprogram: Traineernas motivationsfaktorer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within organizations today the number of well-educated individuals are growing, which means that more people will be motivated to seek knowledge. Today organizations use traineeprograms to develop this knowledge. An organization should continuously work for organizational learning where knowledge is created, captured and shared within the organization. From an organizational point of view traineeprograms are developed to ensure that its future leadership survives by attracting top students. The main goal of a traineeprogram is to provide, maintain and improve the skills necessary to help an organization achieve its goals. The traineeprogram creates a competitive advantage for the organization by improving its greatest asset, the employees.

To maintain these competitive advantages, the organization has to motivate the trainees to remain in the organization after a completed traineeprogram. There-fore becomes the motivation an important aspect of working life. Motivation is something that affects us all and there are different perspectives on motivation. Not everyone has the same priorities and motivations, and therefore we have chosen to investigate what motivates a trainee and how motivational work looks like in the traineeprograms.

Den amerikanska bolånekrisen: Hur uppstod den och vem bär på skulden?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Why space is not enough: Service innovation and service delivery in senior housing2022In: Management and Information Technology after Digital Transformation / [ed] Peter Ekman;Peter Dahlin;Christina Keller, Abingdon and New York: Routledge, 2022, 1, p. 72-80Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter discusses senior housing to support the well-being of older individuals through the provision of physical and social resources. The authors show how digital services contribute to these developments by increasing the resources available and the capacity of older people to integrate resources and take advantage of the value-creating opportunities offered by senior housing solutions. They point out that senior users play a crucial role as active co-creators of their own well-being and contributors to both service innovation and service delivery. As digital services become essential for how older people manage their daily lives, they need to be more integrated in the physical spaces where the actions and memories that shape the lives of seniors take place. Digital services have the potential to both create and deliver new services that will enhance these experiences, which makes their integration with the physical space an important and inseparable component of service innovation and delivery in the context of senior housing.

Political Fragmentation and Changes in the Spending Composition2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies whether political fragmentation influence changes in the government budget composition during election years. Using data for Swedish municipalities between 1998 and 2014, different measures of fragmentation are used to analyze these effects. The results support the existence of such political budget cycles, but give no compelling evidence that these cycles are mainly driven by either less nor more fragmented governments. Furthermore, this paper analyzes if these cycles are rather driven by whether the incumbents won the previous election with a large respectively low margin as a proxy for electoral outcome uncertainty. Neither in this case, the results give any clear indication that these cycles are mostly driven by such factors.

Insynshandel: En sektoranalys på OMX Stockholm Small Cap2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines if legal insider purchases earn abnormal returns on OMX Stockholm Small Cap during the period 2009-2011. A sector analysis is conducted on five sectors; Industrials, Consumer Services, Consumer Goods, Technology and Health Care. We also investigate whether outsiders can earn abnormal returns by mimicking insider trades. An event study is used and our main findings are that insiders on OMX Stockholm Small Cap gain significant abnormal returns. In the sector analysis we find that the majority of sectors also earn significant abnormal returns. The results indicate that an outsider can obtain abnormal returns by mimicking insider trades.

Organizational changes, trust and information sharing: an empirical study2019In: Aslib Journal of Information Management, ISSN 2050-3806, E-ISSN 2050-3814, Vol. 71, no 5, p. 677-692Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

While there is relatively plenty of evidence for the positive impact of communication on the perceptions of organizational change, how organizational changes affect information sharing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate if a favorable perception of ongoing organizational changes has a positive impact on information sharing and whether trust mediates this relationship.

    Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire (n=317) was administered to the employees of a large Finnish multinational organization. Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses based on earlier research findings.

    Findings

The results show that a positive perception of recent organizational changes improves information sharing both directly and indirectly, mediated by trust. Consequently, when changes are perceived negatively, employees recoil from information sharing which is known to have negative implications for organizations.

    Research limitations/implications

Data were collected in a single organization. The nature of the specific changes in the studied organization and its particularities undoubtedly had an effect on respondents’ perceptions.

    Originality/value

This paper contributes to organizational information management research by elaborating on the relationship between organizational changes and interpersonal information sharing between employees. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first quantitative study confirming the impact of the perception of organizational changes on employee information-sharing behavior.

The impact of workplace information literacy on organizational innovation: An empirical study2020In: International Journal of Information Management, ISSN 0268-4012, E-ISSN 1873-4707, Vol. 51, article id UNSP 102041Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study investigates the relationship between CEO's information literacy and innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Even if information literacy's business value has been recognized in recent literature, its impact on organizational innovation, a critical and strongly information intensive process, has never been studied before. Structural equation modeling based analysis of data collected from 184 company CEOs in Finland revealed that CEOs' information literacy has a positive impact on the development of exploratory and exploitative innovations in SMEs. Additionally, opportunity recognition mediates the relationship between information literacy and innovation. Overall, the influence of information literacy is slightly stronger on exploitation than exploration. Nevertheless, the mutual positive effect suggests that information literacy enhances innovation ambidexterity in organizations. Based on these findings, we discuss theoretical and practical implications as well as future research opportunities in workplace information literacy research.

Strategier för plötsliga prisförändringar inom åkerinäringen2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The geographical location of Gotland means that many people need to get to and from the mainland by boat or plane. For the haulage industry that haul goods to and from Gotland, the ferry is the only option to get to the mainland. Sudden price increases from Destination Gotland as an actor to provide travel to and from the mainland have caused many strong reactions among companies, politicians, and ordinary people.

The purpose of the study is to investigate how the trucking industry on Gotland handles sudden price changes. How they work to be resilient but also how they work to maintain relationships when a crisis/sudden event occurs. Furthermore, the study seeks answers to how the trucking industry works to be resilient.

A qualitative survey with semi-structured interviews is chosen for the implementation of this study. The empirical material consists of seven interviews from seven different companies on Gotland. The seven companies are of different sizes in terms of the number of employees and the interviewees are managers and CEOs of the company.

Resilience as a concept, strategies on negotiation techniques, adaptations, risk management and the theory of social exchange theory constitute the theoretical framework for this study.

The result shows that the haulage companies always try to negotiate from a relational perspective where they want all parties to be satisfied, because they believe that this promotes business in the long run. Companies work with adaptations when something sudden happens and companies can adapt operations to a certain extent when something unexpected happens. It has emerged that the ability to adapt varies depending on size, resources, and previous experiences. With agreements on variable prices, which in this case are called boat supplements, the larger companies are more insured to cope with the sudden price change from Destination Gotland.

Follow-ups, trust, and communication are three keywords that appeared many times in the empirical data material. The haulage companies do follow-ups to ensure that expectations have been met. The companies in the study constantly communicate what happened and try to be transparent in their work. Trust that they built over time and creating increased trust is something that the company strives to maintain continued sustainable relationships.

Consumer perspectives towards monetization and its impact on AAA game designs2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Monetization is now a fundamental aspect of video game creation and currently, all developers are trying to utilize it in the various designs of their games. Contemplating the monetized aspect of video games, this research has seen a gap in the studies pertaining to monetization from the perspective of the consumers, who are also the gamers and the buyers of these monetization designs. This paper approaches monetization from the perspective of consumers to bridge that lacuna. It aims to gain insights into the consumer mind by initiating a conversation between previous theories and present discussions to arrive at a middle ground on monetization in AAA games between consumers and game designers. It achieves this by the use of an online survey and semi-structured interviews with core and casual consumers. Furthermore, this research is supported by a discourse analysis on YouTube by game critics and reviewers. The results of the study showed that monetization is beneficial to independent developers and mobile games, it is also beneficial in AAA games if it is left to the part of the game design that does not affect the quality of the game. For example, cosmetics and DLCs, as long as those DLCs are not gated game lore that consumers are forced to buy. The impact of monetization on AAA games is a fifty-fifty issue on the part of the consumer and developer. The financial impact consumers project to developers justifies the rationale for the continuity of monetization models regardless of the quality of the games design. In the future research is needed to better understand consumer perspectives on monetization, particularly among consumers who have grown up in different gaming eras. Additional studies with larger sample sizes should be conducted in order to make valid generalizations and capture the perspectives of teens. Future studies should also focus on games and game studios that have implemented micro-transactions successfully, considering game design quality, revenue, and customer satisfaction.

Are gay men and lesbians discriminated against in the hiring process?2013In: Southern Economic Journal, ISSN 0038-4038, E-ISSN 2325-8012, Vol. 79, no 3, p. 565-585Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents the first field experiment on sexual orientation discrimination in the hiring process in the Swedish labor market. Job applications were sent to about 4000 employers in 10 different occupations in Sweden. Gender and sexual orientation were randomly assigned to applications. The results show that sexual orientation discrimination exists in the Swedish labor market. The discrimination against the gay male applicant and the lesbian applicant varied across different occupations and appears to be concentrated in the private sector. The results also show that the gay male applicant was discriminated against in typical male-dominated occupations, whereas the lesbian applicant was discriminated against in typical female-dominated occupations. Theoretical implications are discussed

Kunskapsöverföring vid organisationsförändring: Hur kommunikation, organisationskultur och teknik främjar kunskapsöverföring2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Öppen innovation i praktiken: -En fallstudie på en svensk startup2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Reaktion på rekommendationer: Lyssnar marknaden mer på svenska analytiker?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sell in May and go away - sanning eller påhitt?2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Organization outside organizations: The abundance of partial organization in social life2019Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The book explores how various social settings are partially organized even when they do not form part of a formal organization. It also shows how even formal organizations may be only partially organized. Professors Göran Ahrne and Nils Brunsson first established the concept of partial organization in 2011 and in doing so opened up a ground-breaking new field of organizational analysis. An academic community has since developed around the concept, and Ahrne and Brunsson have edited this collection to reflect the current state of inquiry in this burgeoning subject and to set an agenda for future research. Its chapters explain how organization is a salient feature in many social settings, including markets, interfirm networks, social movements, criminal gangs, internet communication and family life. Organization theory is much more relevant for the understanding of social processes than previously assumed. This book provides a new understanding of many social phenomena and opens up new fields for organizational analysis.

Organization outside organizations: The significance of partial organization2011In: Organization, ISSN 1350-5084, E-ISSN 1461-7323, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 83-104Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is common practice in organizational research to restrict the concept of organization to formal organizations, and to describe the world outside these entities by such other concepts as institutions or networks. It is argued in this article that the concept of organization can be fruitfully broadened to include some aspects of the order that exists outside and among organizations. A broader concept includes not only complete, formal organization, but also 'partial organization'. Both types of organization are based on decisions, but whereas complete organizations have access to all elements of organization, partial organization is based on only one or a few of these elements. Like complete organization, partial organization is a common phenomenon that not least characterizes much of the contemporary global order. The authors discuss how partial organization arises, how and why institutions and networks sometimes become organized, and the consequences of organization for change, transparency and accountability.

On the fruitfulness of the concept of partial organization: A rejoinder to Apelt et al.2017In: European Management Journal, ISSN 0263-2373, E-ISSN 1873-5681, Vol. 35, no 3, p. 297-299Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This short paper responds to Apelt et al.'s (2017) comments on Ahrne et al.'s (2016) proposal of extending the concept of organization to any decided social orders and thereby putting organization studies at the centre of the social sciences. We highlight some misunderstandings about the aims of this proposal and discuss Apelt et al.'s own proposal of re-focusing organization studies on formal organizations based on Niklas Luhmann's systems theory.

Resurrecting Organization by Going Beyond Organizations2016In: European Management Journal, ISSN 0263-2373, E-ISSN 1873-5681, Vol. 34, no 2, p. 93-101Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This essay is motivated by two related observations about the field of organization studies. First, organization studies researchers have traditionally been good at importing ideas from other areas of research but poor at exporting their own ideas to other fields. Second, even within the field of organization studies, interest in organizations has decreased over the past decades as organization scholars have turned away from organizations to address such other phenomena as institutions or networks. Both developments are undermining the significance of organization studies as a distinctive field of research, the insights of which are necessary for understanding modern society. In this essay, we elaborate on recent suggestions by distinctively European scholars for strengthening concern for the particularities of organization in social theorizing. The first suggestion is to move decisions back to the core of the field. The second suggestion is to extend the notion of organization beyond organizations. We illustrate these two moves with examples from the literature and discuss implications for the future of organization studies.

Food at All Costs?: Investigating attitudes towards genetically modified crops among small-scale farmers in western Kenya2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The international debate on genetically modified crops as a means of ending world hunger is characterised by the polemic between environmental organisations and the biotechnology industry. In African developing countries, the much-needed increase in agricultural productivity could potentially be reached through commercialisation of GMOs, but the findings of this study show that consumer acceptance among small-scale farmers in western Kenya is low. The farmers are not shown to have been influenced directly by NGO advocacy on a local level, but their attitudes are likely swayed by the negative climate of the national debate on GMOs in Kenya. The results also indicate that small-scale farmers do not support environmentalist attitudes, making NGO advocacy and European foreign aid policies potentially misguided in their attempts to promote organic farming principles.

Sustainability Reporting by Swedish Family Firms: A Panel Data Analysis2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction - Sustainability reporting is becoming more and more important for businesses all around the world. Extant empirical literature investigating the relationship between family status and sustainability reporting provides inconclusive results. No previous studies investigated this association in the Swedish setting.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate how family control and influence affects sustainability reporting behavior of Swedish listed firms.

Theoretical framework – Sustainability disclosures are considered as effective means for companies to communicate with their stakeholders. Family firms are more concerned about their internal and external stakeholders in order to protect family’s socioemotional endowments.

Methodology design – We use panel data on Swedish listed firms over the period of 2008-2015. We analyze data with random-effects ordered probit regression for panel data.

Empirical findings - When we treat all family firms as homogenous, there are no statistically significant differences in the levels of reports of family and non-family firms. However, when we take into account internal contexts of family firms, we find that a family member(s) in top management or a family CEO make family firms more transparent about their sustainability performance.

Conclusion – We document that presence of a family top manager(s) or of a family CEO is associated with higher level of details of sustainability reports. Family top managers are more likely to be concerned about internal and external stakeholders to preserve the family’s SEW.

Den interna kontrollens slag mot bedrägerier: En fallstudie med COSO-modellen som utgångspunkt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to get a deeper understanding of the role that internal control plays within the company, also what internal control means to the organizations. We examined a swedish company using the COSO-modell ’s five components, namely control environment, control activities, risk assessment, information and communication and monitoring. The chosen company was currently using the COSO-modell for their internal control. Therefore, the questionnaires were designed in line with these components

The study showed that to avoid fraud and scandals an organization need a well structured internal control system with a constant risk analysing. With the right control mechanism and a more united working process it leaves less room for employees and other individuals involved to manipulate the system, consequently increasing the security and decreasing the risk within the organization.

The Economic Assimilation of Immigrants: A Study on the Economic Assimilation of Foreign-Born Immigrants Based on a Fixed Effects OLS Model and Panel Data of 28 OECD Countries Between 2004–20182023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For several decades, the subject of immigrants and the integration of them has been a highly debated subject, both in politics and research. As the number of immigrants only seems to increase, the relevance of economic assimilation does aswell. The existing research within this field largely focuses on immigrants’ wage development while less attention is paid to their employment levels, implying that there are gaps in the literature. This thesis aims to contribute to filling the gap by examining how the role of governmental spending on labor market programs affects the employment rate amongst immigrants as a proxy for economic assimilation. This paper utilizes a panel data that observes 28 OECD member countries between the years 2004–2018. All the observations are obtained from the OECD Statistics database. The panel data is applied to a fixed effects linear Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model. While the hypothesis in this paper suggests that economic assimilation is promoted by increased LMP spending, the results indicated on the opposite; increased LMP spending seems to decrease immigrant employment rate by 2.4% and thus not promoting economic assimilation of immigrants. Though uncertain, this effect seems to weaken considering time lags.
