    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Erik Ageberg: Who's that girl? – Skivbolagskultur och dess påverkan på Robyn. Uppsala Universitet: Institutionen för Musikvetenskap. C-uppsats, 2006.

Robyn has been one of the most successful Swedish pop stars during the last decade. She has during these ten last years gone from being a young star to being the owner of her own record label, Konichiwa Records. As a result of her last record she became an artist, highly respected by her fellow artists and the audience. The aim of this essay is to discuss the term artistic freedom in the light of Robyn's career. The organization of the music industry is the starting point of the discussion. The way the record companies create their artists are linked to the demands of the public regarding the music they wish to purchase. Accordingly, the artistic freedom is limited by the public in an indirect manner. When artists refer to artistic freedom, or lack of it, it is the author's opinion that it should be understood as a confusion of conceptual arguments. The claim of this thesis is that as the artist refers to the negligence of artistic freedom he or she is in fact targeting on the organizational culture of the music company.

Between Strategy and Utopianism: Ethnic Violence and Strategic War in Lika, 19412018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis proposes two separate intents lying behind the use of violence: namely, “nationalizing” (Gumz 2001) or utopian ideology, and the strategic desire to control territory. Three hypotheses are formulated on this basis, and applied to the case of Lika in 1941. The first predicts that violence exercised by actors motivated by the first type of intent will become increasingly indiscriminate, and is strongly corroborated in the case of the Ustaše. The second hypothesis, building on Kalyvas’ (2006) model, predicts that the selective or indiscriminate nature of violence executed by actors motivated by the second type of intent will correlate with the actor’s level of control: this is largely corroborated in the case of the Italians, but only partly so in the case of the Partisans. The final hypothesis, combining the arguments of Kalyvas (2006) and Dulić and Hall (2014), predicts a stark contrast in the geographical spread of violence executed by strategic and ideological actors, and is strongly corroborated. The thesis works from a micro-level approach.

    Abstract [en]

This essay presents an example of the musical life of a female composer active in Sweden during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through a case study on composer Sara Wennerberg-Reuter (1875-1959), the essay contributes information to her biography, which had been lacking specific details.

Wennerberg-Reuter's biography has been discussed regarding traditional roles of women in music, her relationship to her own artistry and other active women composers, and finally the contemporary reception of Wennerberg-Reuter as a legitimate composer. Aesthetical theories prevalent during Wennerberg-Reuter’s life has been applied in these discussions, such as those presented by Citron, Öhrström and Hanson, combined with Citron's additional theories considering masculine/feminine elements in the musical approach.

    The main conclusions reached regarding the specific conditions enabling a professional status as a composer and woman in Sweden during the given time are;

    a) the liberal permission by the family to pursue higher education in composing, since this was in opposition to the traditions of the time.

    b) the access to a network of musically active women, from which a sense of being part of a female community can be created.

    c) the acceptance from musical institutions such as higher educations, composer's societies and media critics.

Rätten till platsen: Tillhörighet och samhörighet i två lokala industrisamhällen under omvandling2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on the demise of industry that has led to a search for new solutions for the survival of smaller communities traditionally dependent on industrial production. In two local industrial communities in central and northern Sweden, Surahammar and Timrå, industrial dependency has gradually been replaced by a dependency on immigration, largely from the neighboring cities of Västerås and Sundsvall. In the changed order of these local communities, old and new inhabitants have had to negotiate positions in order to co-exist. The objective of the thesis is to present how old and new inhabitants relate to and are attached to the local community as a place in which they reside and live their lives. In focus is an interest in the local identity construction of the inhabitants, i.e. how they identify with the place in which they dwell and live their everyday lives, with and in reference to each other and the outside world. Another concern relates to just how different local options for identification can be for individuals and for collective groups of people.

Adopting a phenomenological and constructivist perspective, I regard local place as something that both old and new inhabitants are shaped by and shape in a collective process based on contrasts. The analysis is based on empirical data gathered during several years of fieldwork in the studied communities. The empirical data mainly consists of interviews and participant observations with old and new inhabitants in Surahammar and Timrå. Moreover, biographical literature, newspaper articles and data retrieved from the Internet have contributed important insights into how the local place is experienced and valued among the different groups of inhabitants. The thesis recognises the values and symbols that old and new inhabitants agree upon and that often result in spatial attachments. In addition, ideological, social and cultural differences are depicted as factors that shape a place as old and new inhabitants articulate local attachment and identification based on different grounds, needs and dreams.

Formträdgården – befriad från politisk skuld och kognitiv skam: Ikonologisk analys av rehabträdgården i Alnarp2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Föreliggande uppsats studerar rehabiliteringsträdgården i Alnarp via Erwin Panofskysikonologiska metod.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Sistani dialect, though a dialect of Persian, displays its own manifestations of morpho-syntactic categorieson the verb form. The purpose of this article is to investigate the verb system of the Sistani dialectas spoken in Sistan based on linguistic fieldwork carried out in the village Sekuhe (locally known as Sakvâ)and provide a synchronic description of its verb structure and the realization of verbal morpho-syntacticcategories including agreement, tense, aspect, mood, and voice. The oral texts used as linguistic data, which compose the corpus for describing and analysing the given morpho-syntactic categories for verbsin the Sistani dialect, were extracted from the free speech of 10 males and 10 females between the ages of7 and 85 with different social backgrounds living in Sekuhe. The findings of the present study show thatthe Sistani dialect employs what are basically its own morpho-syntactic elements to manifest agreement, tense, aspect, and voice in its verb system.

Women and Gender in Ancient Religions: Interdisciplinary Approaches2010Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Following a scholarly conference given in honor of Adela Yarbro Collins, this collection of essays offers focused studies on the wide range of ways that women and gender contribute to the religious landscape of the ancient world. Experts in Greek and Roman religions, Early Christianity, Ancient Judaism, and Ancient Christianity engage in literary, social, historical, and cultural analysis of various ancient texts, inscriptions, social phenomena, and cultic activity. These studies continue the welcomed trend in scholarship that expands the social location of women in ancient Mediterranean religion to include the public sphere and consciousness. The result is an important and lively book that deepens the understanding of ancient religion as a whole. With contributions by:Patricia D. Atlantic Afterlives in Contemporary Fiction: The Oceanic Imaginary since the Information Age2016Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Atlantic Afterlives in Contemporary Fiction offers fresh readings of what has been called "transatlantic literature". In selected twentieth- and twenty-first-century texts it discovers a shift from oceanic, place-based knowledge to an atmospheric, placeless circulation of information. Consonant with the displacements of the Information Age, this book reads contemporary narrative as it imagines and navigates today's virtual spaces. An important conclusion of the book is that intellectual resources are finite and should be used sustainably. Thus, arguing against a conventional comparative approach, this book proposes reading practices that resist the tendency toward an oversupply of reworked literary contexts that seems bent on matching the reach of the World Wide Web. Instead, the book reimagines place as a practice in the way it is communicated and narrated. Ultimately, this book empowers the reader to reimagine a future for narrative in the Information Age.
