The Pleasurable Sinner. Epistle 23 and the Lutheran Aspects of Carl Michael Bellman’s Poetry (Den välbehaglige syndaren. Epistel 23 och det lutherska hos Bellman)

Through studying Epistle no 23 in Fredman’s Epistles, this article investigates the compassionate gaze in Carl Michael Bellman’s poetry. The structure of “Fredman’s Epistle No. 23, which is a Soliloquy, when Fredman lay in front of the Creep-in Tavern, opposite the Bank Building, a summer night in the year 1769” is modelled on the complaint psalms in the biblical Book of Psalms. Like these psalms Epistle 23 consists of a large portion of complaints, descriptions of a situation of need, and cries for help, followed by a sudden and unmotivated transformation and finally expressions of thankfulness and joy. The same structure also characterizes the core of Martin Luther’s religious thinking, as shown in his On the Freedom of a Christian (1520). In a most paradoxical way the sinner is suddenly — without any doing of his own — declared righteous and pleasurable to God, thanks to the redemptive death of Christ. While still on this Earth man is simul iustus et peccator — at the same time a sinner and completely righteous. Likewise, Bellman portrays a man that is at the same time wretched, miserable and lost — and worthy, pleasurable and loveable. And this pleasurableness has nothing to do with morals. It is all grace. With this redeeming gaze — in Luther and in Bellman — also comes an appreciation of everyday earthly and bodily life. Neither in Luther nor in Bellman is that which is worthy and holy to be found in convents or churches, but instead in living rooms, streets, and even taverns and gutters, as in Epistle 23. And the light of grace shines not only on Fredman but on Bellman’s poetic world as a whole.

    Abstract [en]

Helene Blomqvist, Det monistiska problemet och de blasfemiska textstrategierna i Lagerkvists Sibyllan. (The Monistic Problem and Blasphemous Textual Strategies in Lagerkvist’s Sibyllan.)

This article discusses literary articulations of what can be named ‘the monistic problem’ — closely linked to the theodicy problem — using Pär Lagerkvist’s novel Sibyllan (The Sibyl) as an example. Sibyllan is the story of two people, who both have been ‘burnt’ by God – a male god, an almighty patriarch — and yet neither of them can let go of him. They rage and fret and cast blasphemous utterances at him but still their destinies are tied to him. To analyze this novel properly, it is necessary to consider the way in which it is constructed — not as one story, but as two parallel intradiegetic stories, bound together by a heterodiegetic voice. This makes the novel dialogical, in Bachtin’s sense of the word. Under the surface, this text conceals a question, a question that is posed twice, by the stories of the two main characters. The question can be formulated thus: What is God like, and why does he seem so unreasonable? But this novel, as Lagerkvist himself states, is also a book of passion and rage. So the question is: How on earth shall I be able to endure this life with this god? When examined closely, the god of the novel appears to have two different faces, both male: either he is the evil god, the almighty tyrant, whose avenging hand strikes man if he doesn’t obey, or he is the indifferent and exalted, the incomprehensible god who is so far from everything human that it is impossible for any of us to understand anything of what he is like. In both cases, it is evident that the world view is monistic: God is the one ruling principle of the Universe. It appears that a monistic world view (or ontology) is the prerequisite of Pär Lagerkvist’s entire religious struggle, as of the struggles of so many others. As the theologian Gustaf Aulén says, it seems as if western man is caught in a monistic way of thinking, partly due to the unhappy mistranslation of the Greek ‘pantochrator’. The concept ‘Lord God Almighty’ is not only unbiblical, but also really incomprehensible. This study demonstrates how Lagerkvist uses blasphemous literary strategies to point to the absurdity of a monistic ontology coupled with the belief in a good god and with the notion that we should submit willingly and with trust to this monarch. Is there then an alternative to this world view and this concept of God? If there is in Lagerkvist’s novel, it should be the sibyl herself, as a parallel to both the virgin Mary, the mother of God, and to Gaia, the great mother of all living things. At the end of the novel, Gaia still sits as an All-mother high up on the slopes of the divine mountain above Delphi, watching everything with her old eyes and her burnt face. As several echo-feminist thinkers say, maybe this is the god that our world needs today.

Den svenska 1840-talsromanen som nationell kartografi2016In: Samlaren: tidskrift för svensk litteraturvetenskaplig forskning, ISSN 0348-6133, E-ISSN 2002-3871, Vol. 137, p. 58-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish novel of the 1840s as national cartography (Den svenska 1840-talsromanen som nationell kartografi)

The Swedish novel of the 1840s maps the nation. Whereas the novels of the 1830s advocate a predominantly cultural nationalism, the nationalism in the novels of the 1840s connects to the national territory. Inspired by Franco Moretti, a map is used as an analytical tool marking out travel routes in Sweden and Norway in 15 novels by the best-selling authors Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865), Sophie von Knorring (1797–1848), Emilie Flygare-Carlén (1807–1892), and C.J.L. Almqvist (1793–1866). The map shows that the national territory is unevenly covered: most of the novels are set in the provinces surrounding the lake Vättern, possibly creating a new water centre for the nation, while Dalecarlia, later to become the ”core province” of Sweden, is still considered too wild and remote. Furthermore, the map shows that borders become the focus of attention as territory gains importance. Geography teaching is a recurrent theme in the novels, and the national map is even portrayed as the body of Mother Svea — national boundaries conjure up an eroticised unity, a body evoking love. Nevertheless, the imagined geographies connecting cultural nationalism to territory also have the paradoxical effect of constructing the provinces as separate national communities. Therefore, external as well as internal borders appear as important narrative sites. Nationalist thought at the beginning of the 19th century was often part of a liberal movement developing the idea of citizenship, and in these novels the borders instigate narratives of citizenship. The borders intensify the promises of the nation-state to the citizen: the border is the site where bodies that do not comply with societal norms can find a place to make their contribution to the nation. However, the border is also the site where citizenship is contested, as unstable law enforcement exposes the characters to lethal violence.

The other’s gaze: A motif study in the authorship of Hjalmar Bergman (Den andres blick. En motivstudie i Hjalmar Bergmans författarskap)

The other’s gaze is a recurring motif in the authorship of Hjalmar Bergman. The aim of this article is to study the function of the motif in the selected works regarding plot and theme. In novels such as Loewenhistorier and Chefen fru Ingeborg the motif has an anticipatory function. Furthermore, the motif is related to fate, which is an overarching theme in a series of novels. In Markurells i Wadköping the other’s gaze works as an increasing element of the theme’s dramatic development. In Jonas och Helen the motif is of crucial importance to the novel’s love intrigue. The ugly girl exposed to the other’s gaze is a guiding principle in Lotten Brenners ferier. The motif also contributes to the characterization of the protagonists of the novels. What primarily characterizes the motif ’s function is its emotional charge, which effectively contributes to the dynamics of the intrigue.

    Abstract [en]

Hjalmar Bergman’s authorship has previously been investigated with Bakhtin’s theories of the novel and the carnival as the main points of reference. This article is instead based on the central bakhtinian concept of the chronotope. The aim is to show how time and space are related to each other in psychologically and existentially significant ways in a selection of Bergman’s novels. Another aim is to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept of chronotope as an intrument of analysis.

Chronotope is a broad concept but limited to specific moments in the diegesis it opens possibilities to study in detail how time thickens and how space is related to time. Furthermore, how chronotopes generate textual derivations on a metaphorical level, can be analysed with the support of Riffaterre’s semiotic theory.

The article deals with both major, genre-defining and minor, local chronotopes, but the primary interest is the threshold chronotope, that is, the point where a crisis takes place. In the article there is a focus on key scenes in the chosen novels in order to show how the threshold chronotope constitute a recurrent motif, which in combination with, or contrasted to other chronotopes, forms a characteristic chronotopical pattern in the authorship of Hjalmar Bergman.
