    Abstract [sv]

Imāmiyya Shīʿa (The Twelvers)2021Inngår i: Handbook of Islamic Sects and Movements / [ed] Muhammad Afzal Upal & Carole M. Cusack, Leiden Boston: Brill Academic Publishers, 2021, 1, s. 181-202Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Shīʿa is one of the earliest branches within Islam. Shīʿa Muslims today make upa sizable minority among the Muslims around the world (about 15–20% of allMuslims). Shīʿa theological traditions and institutions have developed in parallel with the Sunnī-dominated theological tradition. The shaping of Shīʿa within Islam goes back to a conflict over the succession after the death of the prophet Muḥammad. The power struggle concerned who was to succeed Muḥammad as leader of the Muslim community. No one couldsucceed him in his capacity as divine messenger since Muḥammad. One of the parties in the conflict over Muḥammad’s successor thought that the role should be filled by one of his oldest followers, in this case, AbūBakr, who belonged the small band of Muḥammad’s closest men. Opposition came from a group who claimed that the leadership should remain within Muḥammad’s family. Muḥammad had no sons, so leadership would pass to hiscousin ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalib (600–661), who was married to Muḥammad’s daughter Fāṭima. Shīʿa have not been a homogeneous group. During a short period in the earlyhistory of Shīʿa, between 660 and 870, a dozen conflicting factions formed, all of which laid claim to the correct interpretation within Shīʿa. This chapter focuses on the largest group within Shīʿa: The Imāmiyya, or theTwelvers. According to Imāmiyya Shīʿa the leadership of the Muslim communityafter Muḥammad should start with his relative ʿAlī and the last Shīʿa imāmwas Muḥammad ibn Ḥasan (b. 868), known as al-Mahdī, the ‘Hidden Imām’.

Shiitisk politisk idétradition2011Inngår i: Islam och politik / [ed] Göran Larsson & Susanne Olsson, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2011, s. 65-92Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

1)Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Hiding in plain sight: A descriptive content analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood politicizing Islam 2005-20112019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis highlights the ways in which the Muslim brotherhood politicizes Islam, depicted in the group’s official documents. The study theorizes a social-constructivist approach to politicized religion and argues the concept as an effort to manipulate an understanding of religion with political intentions. Through a descriptive content analysis, this thesis analyzes three official political documents from the Muslim brotherhood’s English website, ‘Ikhwanweb’. The analysis identifies the religious ideology of the group as all-encompassing Islamic, as well as concludes the Muslim brotherhood as utilizing politicized religion extensively in the chosen material.

Survival, memory and identity: The roles of saint worship in Early Modern Castile2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 poäng / 60 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper aims to explore the connections between the rural communities of Early Modern Castile and the saints they venerated through their festivities, relics and advocations and the roles that these relationships fulfilled in their societies. The Castilians of the sixteenth century seem to have used their interactions with saints not only for the purpose of the salvation of their souls, but rather, as ways to ensure the survival of their population, to cement social cohesion and identity, or to preserve the memory of their communities.

Through the topographic relations of Philip II, a fantastic source that reproduces the voices of members of rural communities of Central Castile, this paper analyses the boundaries between the utilitarian and the cultural in the worship of saints, and the limits of local culture and identity.

Guilty Pleasures: Kāma in ancient India and the Pali Vinaya2023Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

While most heavily associated with treatises such as the Kāmasūtra, the notion of kāma (‘sensual desire,’ ‘sensual pleasure’) has deep roots in South Asian intellectual and cultural history. Strongly associated with eroticism, kāma in fact extends far beyond mere sexuality encompassing what may be called sensuality broadly understood. Early Buddhist monasticism in particular displays both recognition of and preoccupation with notions of kāma extant during its formative period. Indeed, the monastic vocation is oftentimes described as entailing the abandonment and ultimately the transcendence of kāma. This basic ideological framework is clearly evinced in the Vinaya literature, the corpus of monastic law intended to govern the daily lives of monks and nuns.

This study explores the import of kāma as portrayed in the canonical Pali literature, delineates Buddhist doctrinal stances towards kāma, and examines how kāma relates to the program of monastic discipline as reposited in the Pali Vinaya. Drawing on theories of the senses and aesthetics in anthropology and cultural studies, the study gears analytic attention to how kāma relates to affect, corporeality, and materiality.

This study argues that the Buddhist tradition developed in ambivalent and dialectical relation to notions of kāma. On the one hand antagonistic to it, Buddhist thought in fact sublimates kāma within its larger ethical framework. Therein endowment with the objects of sensual enjoyment (kāmaguṇa), whether on the human plane or in the various Buddhist heavens, is presented as consonant with one’s prior performance of meritorious actions. Although an entirely legitimate ethical domain for householders, the monastic vocation is conversely premised on the renunciation of sensual pleasures. Accordingly, in the Pali Vinaya a plethora of behaviors—covering domains as diverse as sexuality, bodily care, ornamentation, dress and furnishings, consumption of music, and everyday social interactions—are formally prohibited to monastics purportedly due to their associations with sensuality. This study examines in detail the kinds of material practices associated with kāma and how they become restricted in the Pali Vinaya, while also gearing attention to the tensions and ambiguities inherent in this legislative process. The study contributes to existing scholarship by uncovering how one persistently central category of Indic thought, kāma, finds expression in early Buddhism, thereby contributing not only to the study of early Buddhist monasticism but to South Asian cultural history more generally.

Muslimer i media: En innehållsanalys av DN Debatts framställning av muslimer ett år före och ett år efter 9/11 2001.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether or not there has been a change in the way DN Debatt has been depicting muslims. This study process the time between 11 September 2000 and 11 September 2002. To reach my result I am using a content analysis, this because I found it the most useful to my material. The result I got with this thesis was that it wasn’t that big of a difference in the picture that the writers wanted to show. The biggest difference was the linguistic, the words used in the articles changed from quite positive to become rather negative. For example before 11 September 2001 the word terrorism was not to be seen in a article about Muslims, but after the same date every article used in this study has the word terrorist in some way. In my thesis I used a hypothesis, the hypothesis was that the reporting about Muslims was going to be radically changed and become hostile towards Muslims. This was not the case and my hypothesis was in one way contradicted.

Klerikal fascism: En deskriptiv innehållsanalys av Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund, 1929-19502017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine how Christianity and fascism can be concatenated. The thesis has been conducted as a descriptive content analysis of the Swedish Association of Religious Reform (Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund), established in 1929. In order to identify the Association’s socio-theological project and agenda, a Foucauldian inspired social constructionism theory has been applied. This thesis argues that by relying on a mission to ‘complete’ the Lutheran Reformation, which considered religion and culture alike, the Association’s struggle for a religious ‘rebirth’ also referred to the rebirth of Swedish culture and society. This assumption was correlated with contemporary conceptions of ‘race’ and Jews, culminating into the perception of Jesus as a masculine Aryan ideal.

Race and Religion: The Construction of Race in a Pro-Nazi Christian Association in Interwar Sweden2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to scrutinize how Sveriges Religiösa Reformförbund (Swedish Association of Religious Reform), a pro-Nazi Christian association in interwar Sweden, constructed the concept of race during the years 1929–1940. Using hermeneutic content analysis and a theoretical approach based on “biopolitics” and “political theology,” I examine the construction during three identified periods: 1929–1933, 1934–1937, 1938–1940. Liberal theological in orientation, the association applied a historical-critical exegesis based on late-nineteenth century German Kulturprotestantismus, seeing culture and religion as inseparable components. Also stressing the need for a “religious rebirth” of the Swedish nation, the association pursued a regenerative return to the religious-ethical characteristics of the country’s alleged heroic Germanic past. First using cultural and biological arguments separately in the construction of race, the association would due to its emerging pro-Nazi orientation become influenced by Nazi German theologians, hence incorporating elements of völkisch ideology.

Vita protestanter, brinnande kors: Ku Klux Klan, pan-protestantism och myten om Amerika2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse how and to what extent Ku Klux Klan constructed a pan-Protestant interpretation of Christianity based on its “myth of America” (Americanism) during the years 1915–30. Using hermeneutic content analysis and a theoretical approach based on Gramscian “cultural hegemony” and historian of religions Bruce Lincoln’s theory of myth, I examine the construction through three analytical themes: the Klan and the myth of America, the Klan’s pan-Protestantism, the Klan and religious patriotism. The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s advocated a theological position where race and religious confession are intimately entwined, and its members hence believed that the white race is God’s chosen people and Unites States a God-ordained nation. Opposing the idea of multiculturalism, Klan members stressed the notion of America as a nation imagined to be threatened by Jews, Catholics, and blacks. Therefore, every white Protestant American had to unite in order to combat these alleged national and racial menaces. This worldview was permeated by aspects of love. It was mostly because of love to God, race and nation – not primarily due to hate – the Klan constructed its interpretation of Protestant Christianity. The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s truly imagined themselves as guard-ians, or Knights, of an endangered culture.

Kyrka och mission i Sverige 1868-1901: Svenska kyrkans missions tillkomst och första verksamhetstid1962Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Following the post-1945 fall of state-institutionalised fascism, a segment of the remaining faithful who refused to change skin sought to reconcile the expectations of fascism's infallibility with experienced reality by turning inwards into a world of esoteric mysticism. This chapter explores three articulations of occult Nordicism seminal to the wider political landscape of Nordic radical nationalism after 1945: (1) the Ario-Hindu pathworks of Miguel Serrano, the sage of hitlerismo esoterico, and Savitri Devi, “Hitler's Priestess”; (2) the retrotopian heathenry of racist Norse paganism; and (3) the dark undercurrent of extreme, black, occult pagan metal. The first two are esoteric ideologies, construing the Nordic through esoteric teachings and practice, while the third is an unruly scene of dark culture in which the Nordic is construed through arts and music. Beyond its empirical explorations, this chapter seeks to contribute to the conversation of comparative fascism studies by reflecting theoretically on populism, elitism, and the role of “the People” in fascist thought and practice.

In the Name of Elijah Muhammad: Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam1996Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the Name of Elijah Muhammad tells the story of the Nation of Islam—its rise in northern inner-city ghettos during the Great Depression through its decline following the death of Elijah Muhammad in 1975 to its rejuvenation under the leadership of Louis Farrakhan. Mattias Gardell sets this story within the context of African American social history, the legacy of black nationalism, and the long but hidden Islamic presence in North America. He presents with insight and balance a detailed view of one of the most controversial yet least explored organizations in the United States—and its current leader. Beginning with Master Farad Muhammad, believed to be God in Person, Gardell examines the origins of the Nation. His research on the period of Elijah Muhammad’s long leadership draws on previously unreleased FBI files that reveal a clear picture of the bureau’s attempts to neutralize the Nation of Islam. In addition, they shed new light on the circumstances surrounding the murder of Malcolm X. With the main part of the book focused on the fortunes of the Nation after Elijah Muhammad’s death, Gardell then turns to the figure of Minister Farrakhan. From his emergence as the dominant voice of the radical black Islamic community to his leadership of the Million Man March, Farrakhan has often been portrayed as a demagogue, bigot, racist, and anti-Semite. Gardell balances the media’s view of the Nation and Farrakhan with the Nation’s own views and with the perspectives of the black community in which the organization actively works. His investigation, based on field research, taped lectures, and interviews, leads to the fullest account yet of the Nation of Islam’s ideology and theology, and its complicated relations with mainstream Islam, the black church, the Jewish community, extremist white nationalists, and the urban culture of black American youth, particularly the hip-hop movement and gangs.

    Abstract [en]

This essay has the title ”Melchizedek and Christ: Melchizedek in 11Q13 compared to Melchizedek and Christ in the Letter to the Hebrews. The aim is to investigate if Melchizedek in 11Q13 has been an intertext to Melchizedek or to Christ in Hebrews. The conclusion is that perhaps the author of Hebrews knew about 11Q13, but it does not seems like that. When the author writes about Melchizedek, the text from Gen 14:18-20 is the most important intertext, and when Jesus is the subject Psalms 110:1, 4 is the main intertext.

Enemy Love and Apocalyptic Genocide: Views on Military Violence and Pacifism Among Swedish Pentecostals 1967-19712021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Pentecostals were the largest religious group among conscientious objectors in Sweden between 1967 and 1971, a time characterized by passionate debates on the ethics of war in the shadows of Vietnam and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This thesis aims to review and analyze how the Pentecostal periodicals Evangelii Härold and Dagen described and ethically motivated military violence and pacifism in different contexts during this period. The purpose is to identify potential motivations for pacifism and/or military support during a time when a large number of Pentecostals refused to bear arms, with particular interest in how these motivations related to ethical evaluation on contemporary wars.

Pacifism and conscientious objection were regularly promoted and seldom criticized, while most contemporary military violence was condemned with one glaring exception: Israeli warfare. Unlike the American war effort in Vietnam, Israel’s wars were commonly viewed as eschatologically significant and biblically predicted holy wars, with several writers suggesting that God himself has waged and will wage war on Israel’s behalf. Pacifism was primarily motivated by obedience to the Bible rather than empathy, fitting with Lisa Cahill’s theory of obediential pacifism being distinct from empathic pacifism in the Christian tradition. Support for Israeli warfare was also derived from biblical interpretation, primarily based on Old Testament texts. It was further motivated by ideas of Jewish suffering and death being part of God’s plan, with several Pentecostal writers speculating that an apocalyptic genocide greater than the Holocaust would precede the second coming of Christ. Many Pentecostals did not see this as standing in conflict with personal pacifism and conscientious objection, as both views were perceived as biblical. Future research could further explore the relationship between Pentecostal eschatology and empathy, along with how mid-century Pentecostal Zionism might have been influenced by antisemitic ideas from the 1930’s.

    Abstract [en]

In 19th century Sweden women preached in the popular revival movements as they did in the other Nordic countries, in Great Britain and the United States. One of the most famous preachers in Sweden was Nelly Hall (1848–1916). Internal and external evidence of her public life is the main focus of the study, and in this way it seeks to uncover the origin of her inspiration and to specify her connection to the spiritual movements of the time, at the same time that it analyses the reception and the debate of women as preachers in the period when she was active.

Nelly Hall studied at the Royal School for Women’s Higher Teacher Education and worked as a teacher for ten years before she decided to enter into the ministry of preaching. She was influenced by the Anglo-American Holiness movement and had close contacts with the Salvation Army in London. From 1883 she travelled in the southern parts of Sweden. Thousands of people listened to her and as part of her ministry she practised faith healing. She went on preaching tours to Finland, Norway, Germany and the United States. When the Swedish Holiness Mission started as a small mission society in 1887 it was to some extent a result of the preaching work carried out by Nelly Hall. She was elected a member of the first board and worked as a mission secretary for ten years. Around 1900 there was a shift in her theological thinking and she became more absorbed by apocalyptic ideas. In 1901 she went for the second time to the United States and lived there until 1916 when she died in Brockton, Massachusetts. Little is known about the last fifteenth years of her life.

The ministry of Nelly Hall and other women raised considerable public interest and in the Swedish context her time of ministry coincided with the emerging movement for the emancipation of women. Many were against women preaching in public and the discussions often occurred in the press. Parts of these discussions as well as several pamphlets in favour of women’s preaching are analysed in this study.

Objektiv verklighetsbeskrivning eller motverkande av traditionella könsroller?: Hur två grundläggande värden inom skolans uppdrag och värdegrund kan stå i konflikt med varandra i läroböcker i religionskunskap.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to examine how authors of textbooks used in religious education in Swedish schools cope with the two following aspects: 1) How to objectively and accurately describe the various religious traditions that are included in what is commonly understood as the five major world religions and their patriarchal patterns; and 2) How to avoid reproducing traditional gender roles, which is part of the central values fundamental to the Swedish school system stipulated by the government.

In order to do so, three textbooks were examined, using both a qualitative text analysis, and a quantitative picture analysis. The research questions asked include how the authors portray men’s and women’s religiosity, whether men are seen as the neutral norm, and what message the pictures chosen to accompany the texts portray to the reader. Theories concerning the male primacy and androcentric tendencies in the descriptions of religious traditions developed by researchers Yvonne Hirdman and Jeanette Sky were used in order to analyze the results.

The results of the study show that two main approaches for how the authors have handled the seemingly contradictory objectives can be distinguished. The first approach is in line with the goal of an objective and detailed description of the different religious traditions and their patriarchal tendencies, as the authors include an account of the different roles assigned to people according to gender. The other approach focuses more on the general values portrayed by the religions, in which both men and women can be included, connected to central values of the Swedish schools. However, they might do so at the expense of portraying a complete picture, thus obscuring the predicaments of the gender hierarchies.

    Abstract [en]

”INHERITED ARCHETYPES AND MODERN AUTHORITIES IN THE MYTH OF PRIMORDIAL MATRIARCHY. Origin, Timelessness and Unity in two Popular Exegeses of Greek Mythology and its Prehistory, Later Destiny, and Present Possibilities”

The article examines the various types of authority and the processes of authorization discernible in two popular texts representing that particular genre of spiritual feminism, which applies a Jungian archetypal perspective on ancient Greek myths. First, the version of “The Myth of Primordial Matriarchy” that is found in these texts is discussed critically in relation to archaeological and historical knowledge as well as reasonable argument. Second, the two concepts “archetypes” and “goddesses”, which are the most important authorities explicitly brought forward in the texts, are discussed as regards the different theological and ontological presuppositions discernible. The relationship between these authorities and others, such as ancient texts, modern scholars and the writers themselves, is also discussed. The author of this article concludes that the process of authorisation is based on a myth that is effective in binding together the different levels of timelessness, creation and origin, personalized tragic biography, inherited essence, and women’s situation and proposed roads to awareness today. The myth’s effectiveness is partly due to the concept of the divine: usually it is presented as immanent, but several statements about the goddesses and archetypes are more easily interpreted in transcendental terms. As an effect, readers of the texts may view history in its entirety as a personal biography of the Goddess, who is at the same time an innate aspect of each individual. Finally, the author questions the absolutizing and dichotomizing presuppositions of the gendered concept of divinity which is found in the texts, as well as the implications of the psychological ideal for human individuals.
