Kungen är död, länge leve kungen: En undersökning av arvkungadömets utmaningar 1544–17962009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Swedish hereditary kingship was not without its problems. In March 1792, Gustav III was assassinated leaving an immature heir to the throne. The direct succession of Gustav IV Adolf was impossible as he had not yet reached the age of majority. This example epitomises this study’s focal point –the hereditary kingship’s challenges.

This is a study of the hereditary kingship’s formation and practices. It sheds light on how the hereditary kingship dealt with challenges through constitutional law and how the transfer of power was portrayed ceremonially. Closely connected with the transfer of power, are the underlying concepts of kingship. Normally the succession occurs through one king’s funeral and the following king’s coronation, however it could also take place through abdication or coup d’état.

The study consists of two analytical parts. The first part aims to elucidate the formation and practices of the hereditary kingship with an exposé beginning in 1544: the establishment of the hereditary kingship. The second part focuses on the immaturity of Gustav IV Adolf up until he reached the age of majority in 1796.

The findings show that the formation of the hereditary kingship and its practices display certain themes when power is transferred and when challenges are overcome. These includethe notion of unity, to be chosen, legality, to fulfil one’s role as ruler, and continuity. The results also show that hereditary kingship adapts to meet its challenges and that these themes are omnipresent and part of a constantly ongoing process when power is transferred. In Gustav IV Adolf’s case, the constitutional law dictated how the regiment was to be organised. In addition, his guardian Charles was granted Royal Authority and acted as Regent. The saying which composes the title of this study illustrates the natural transfer of power; albeit that this transpired gradually. The conclusion is a deepened understanding of the words: The king is dead, long live the king.

Hypoxia Due to Cardiac Arrest Induces a Time-Dependent Increase in Serum Amyloid β Levels in Humans2011In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 6, no 12, p. e28263-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Amyloid β (Aβ) peptides are proteolytic products from amyloid precursor protein (APP) and are thought to play a role in Alzheimer disease (AD) pathogenesis. While much is known about molecular mechanisms underlying cerebral Aβ accumulation in familial AD, less is known about the cause(s) of brain amyloidosis in sporadic disease. Animal and postmortem studies suggest that Aβ secretion can be up-regulated in response to hypoxia. We employed a new technology (Single Molecule Arrays, SiMoA) capable of ultrasensitive protein measurements and developed a novel assay to look for changes in serum Aβ42 concentration in 25 resuscitated patients with severe hypoxia due to cardiac arrest. After a lag period of 10 or more hours, very clear serum Aβ42 elevations were observed in all patients. Elevations ranged from approximately 80% to over 70-fold, with most elevations in the range of 3-10-fold (average approximately 7-fold). The magnitude of the increase correlated with clinical outcome. These data provide the first direct evidence in living humans that ischemia acutely increases Aβ levels in blood. The results point to the possibility that hypoxia may play a role in the amyloidogenic process of AD.

Kontaktperson - en insats för vem?: En kvalitativ studie om bedömningskriterier i kontaktpersonsutredningar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Insatsen kontaktperson regleras i 3 kap.

Vilka väljs ut?: En urvalsanalys av två samverkansformer kring arbetslivsinriktad rehabilitering i Uppsala län2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Multidimensional Aspects of Dystonia: Description and Physiotherapy Management2008Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: The overall aim of this research was to increase the knowledge about dystonia by identifying factors that influence self-reported quality of life and health in this disorder and to determine what factors predict disability. A further aim was to develop an objective outcome measure for quantifying the movement dysfunction in cervical dystonia (CD) and evaluate effects of physiotherapy.

Methods: A descriptive correlative design was adopted for study I (n=351), with a questionnaire covering physical activity, satisfaction with treatment, physiotherapy or not, and quality of life and health measured with the Craniocervical Dystonia Questionnaire (CDQ-24) and the Cervical Dystonia Impact Profile, respectively.

In study II a CD group (n=6) was compared with a control group (n=6). Head movements were measured with a motion capture system, and a Movement Energy Index (MEI) was calculated. In study III an experimental single-case design (n=6) was used, with continuous assessments during pre-treatment, intervention and follow-up. Quality of life, measured with CDQ-24, was the primary outcome measure.

A prospective correlative design was applied in study IV (n=179), where data from questionnaires were collected on inclusion and 2 months later. Independent variables were: duration of dystonia, severity of dystonia, pain intensity, catastrophizing, self-efficacy, fatigue, kinesiophobia, depression, anxiety and physical activity; and the dependent variables were the Neck Disability Index and the Functional Disability Questionnaire.

Results: Study I indicated that physical activity and satisfaction with treatment were associated with quality of life and health in dystonia. In study II the groups differed significantly concerning MEI in all movement directions. Mean MEI was significantly higher in patients than in controls. Positive treatment outcomes were reported by all patients in study III, mainly with reduced pain and reduced CD severity during the treatment period. Five of the six patients reported increased quality of life at the 6-month follow-up. Perceived self-efficacy, fatigue, pain intensity and anxiety contributed significantly to disability prediction in study IV.

Conclusion: These investigations have increased the knowledge of dystonia from a multidimensional perspective and the results could be valuable in developing new treatment strategies.

    Abstract [en]

Objectives –  Dystonia is often disabling and disfiguring. The aim of the study was to identify factors influencing the impact of dystonia on self-reported quality of life and health.

Material and methods –  Members of the Swedish Dystonia Patient Association participated in a survey covering demographic variables, satisfaction with treatment, physiotherapy and physical activity. Quality of life and health were assessed by the Craniocervical Dystonia Questionnaire and the Cervical Dystonia Impact Profile, respectively. Of 378 questionnaires, 76% were analysed. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate associations of the above variables with quality of life and health.

Results –  Level of physical activity and satisfaction with treatment showed the highest association with quality of life and health. No significant relationship was found between form of dystonia and quality of life.

Conclusions –  The study indicates a need for health care professionals to encourage physical activity and to question dystonia patients about satisfaction with treatment. Further investigations with prospective controlled trials are necessary to evaluate the value of physiotherapy and physical activity in patients with dystonia.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to explore the outcome of a physiotherapy program targeted to improve the quality of life of people with cervical dystonia (CD) by reducing pain, improving awareness of postural orientation, increasing muscle strength, and reducing the effort of moving the head and neck. In six single case studies, the primary outcome measure for each case was the Cervical Dystonia Questionnaire (CDQ) to measure the impact of the program on the individuals' quality of life. Secondary outcome measures were identified for the different components of the physiotherapy program: Visual Analogue Scale (pain); Postural Orientation Index (postural orientation awareness); and Movement Energy Index (effort of moving head and neck). Each of the cases had the severity of their problems scored on the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Scale. The study period was 26 weeks: 2 weeks' baseline period, 4 weeks' treatment period, and 20 weeks' follow-up. All measures except the Movement Energy Index (MEI) and CDQ-24 were taken three times per week for the first 6 weeks of the study and then once at 3 and 6 months. The MEI was taken once a week during the pretreatment and the treatment periods and during the first 2 weeks of follow-up and also after 3 and 6 months of follow-up. The CDQ-24 was taken once in the pretreatment period, once after completion of treatment, once 2 weeks after treatment, and once at 3 and 6 months of follow-up. Five of the six case studies reported an increase in quality of life at 6-month follow-up, as measured on the CDQ-24. Three of the six cases reported a reduction in pain and severity of the dystonia and had improved scores on the postural orientation measure at 6-month follow-up. All six patients had a reduction in the movement energy scores, but this was not significant. The outcomes of the six case studies would suggest that further investigation is required to show the effectiveness of physiotherapy programs in the management of CD.

Objective: To examine the multivariate association between a model of self-perceived non-motor aspects and disability in cervical dystonia. Design: A prospective and correlational design with two points of assessment. Subjects: All 273 members with cervical dystonia from the Swedish Dystonia Patient Association were invited to participate. Methods: Data were collected with one self-reported questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent by post on two separate occasions. Disability was the primary outcome variable measured by the Functional Disability Questionnaire. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 180 individuals (66%) on both occasions. The multivariate association between the non-motor model and disability was statistically significant (adjusted R-2 0.46, F(7, 149)=19.76, p = 0.001). This indicated that 46% of the variance in disability was explained by the non-motor model. Self-efficacy appeared to be the most salient predictor of disability. Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the need for increasing awareness of self-perceived non-motor aspects among care providers treating patients with cervical dystonia. This presents opportunities for new rehabilitation possibilities that apply a behavioural medicine perspective.

Exploring factors related to physical activity in cervical dystonia2015In: BMC Neurology, ISSN 1471-2377, E-ISSN 1471-2377, Vol. 15, article id 247Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

People with disabilities have reported worse health status than people without disabilities and receiving fewer preventive health services such as counseling around exercise habits. This is noteworthy considering the negative consequences associated with physical inactivity. No research has been conducted on physical activity in cervical dystonia (CD), despite its possible major impact on self-perceived health and disability. Considering the favorable consequences associated with physical activity it is important to know how to promote physical activity behavior in CD. Knowledge of variables important for such behavior in CD is therefore crucial. The aim of this study was to explore factors related to physical activity in individuals with cervical dystonia.

    Methods

Subjects included in this cross-sectional study were individuals diagnosed with CD and enrolled at neurology clinics (n = 369). Data was collected using one surface mailed self-reported questionnaire. Physical activity was the primary outcome variable, measured with the Physical Activity Disability Survey. Secondary outcome variables were: impact of dystonia measured with the Cervical Dystonia Impact Scale; fatigue measured with the Fatigue Severity Scale; confidence when carrying out physical activity measured with the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale; confidence in performing daily activities without falling measured with the Falls Efficacy Scale; enjoyment of activity measured with Enjoyment of Physical Activity Scale, and social influences on physical activity measured with Social Influences on Physical Activity in addition to demographic characteristics such as age, education level and employment status.

    Results

The questionnaire was completed by 173 individuals (47 % response rate). The multivariate association between related variables and physical activity showed that employment, self-efficacy for physical activity, education level and consequences for daily activities explained 51 % of the variance in physical activity (Adj R 0.51, F (5, 162) = 35.611, p = 0.000). Employment and self-efficacy for physical activity contributed most strongly to the association with physical activity.

    Conclusions

Considering the favorable consequences associated with physical activity it could be important to support the individuals with CD to remain in work and self-efficacy to physical activity as employment and self-efficacy had significant influence on physical activity level. Future research is needed to evaluate causal effects of physical activity on consequences related to CD .

PEG-stabilized lipid disks as carriers for amphiphilic antimicrobial peptides2011In: Journal of Controlled Release, ISSN 0168-3659, E-ISSN 1873-4995, Vol. 156, no 3, p. 323-328Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Antimicrobial peptides hold potential as a possible alternative, or complement, to conventional antibiotics but new, safe and efficient means are needed for formulation and administration of the peptides. In this study we have investigated the utility of a novel type of lipid particles, the polyethylene glycol-stabilized lipid-disks, as carriers for the model peptide melittin. The structural integrity of the carrier particle when loaded with the peptide was investigated using cryo-transmission electron microscopy. Liposome leakage upon addition of the peptide-lipid-disks was monitored as a means to verify the membrane lytic effect of the formulation. The susceptibility of melittin to tryptic digestion was studied and compared in the absence and presence of lipid-disks. Finally, the antibacterial effect of the peptide-lipid-disk formulation was compared to that of free melittin after both single and repeated exposure to Escherichia coli. The results show that melittin can redistribute from the disk into a new host membrane and that formulation in the disks does not compromise melittin's membrane permeabilizing ability. Further, the peptide was found to be fully protected against degradation when bound to the disks. Time-kill experiments revealed that all the antibacterial effect of melittin administered in free form was gone after a single exposure to E. coli. In contrast, the disk formulation showed significant cell-killing effect also upon a second exposure to bacteria, indicating an extended release of peptide from the lipid-disks. These results suggest that the lipid-disks constitute a new class of promising carriers for peptide antibiotics.

JÄMSTÄLLDHET: Vilken bild synliggörs i de stora börsbolagens årsredovisningar?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Sammandrag

    Abstract [sv]

The Old World Journey: National Identity in Four American Novels from 1960 to 19732005Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A commonly held assumption among literary critics is that the motif of the European journey is exhausted in American literature in the post-World-War-II period. Challenging this view, the present study claims that the Old World journey narrative lives on, but in new guises, and that it continues to be a forum for the discussion of American national identity. Studying four novels about Americans traveling to Europe – William Styron’s Set This House on Fire (1960), Mary McCarthy’s Birds of America (1971), John A. Williams’s The Man Who Cried I Am (1967) and Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying (1973) – this thesis examines the ways in which the European journey is utilized for a questioning of “America.” Informed by the political debates of their time, which lead, for example, to the displacement of hegemonic ideologies such as nationalism, they share a critical stance vis-à-vis the conventional construction of national identity. They represent, however, different strands of the contemporary political counterculture; while the first two texts view national identity from the center of American society, addressing a moral and an ideological/intellectual critique, respectively, the last two represent marginal perspectives, that of the African American and feminist protest movements. The function of the European setting in the four novels is also scrutinized: in all of them the European setting provides the backdrop for a story that deals, almost exclusively, with American culture; it serves in a variety of ways, for example as a many-facetted stage, an experimental ground, or a zone of liberation. The Coda sketches recent developments in the 1980s and 1990s, finding the motif of initiation and the figure of the independent warm-hearted American girl to persist and the myth of American innocence to continue to be contested.

Do Gender Quotas Foster Women's Political Engagement?: Lessons from Latin America2009In: Political research quarterly, ISSN 1065-9129, E-ISSN 1938-274X, Vol. 62, no 4, p. 715-730Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Gender quotas have been held to have more far-reaching consequences than increasing women’s political representation. Some scholars claim that they foster women’s overall political engagement. After elaborating a theoretical framework on how affirmative action policies to legislative bodies might be beneficial to constituents of the targeted group, I test this hypothesis on women in 17 Latin American countries. Contrasting previous claims, I show that there is no general proof of attitudinal or behavioral effects. The analysis represents an initial attempt to theorize and use large-scale data to examine the more long-term consequences of quota policies on female constituents’ political involvement.

Engineering Equality?: Assessing the Multiple Impacts of Electoral Gender Quotas2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The driving question of this compilation thesis is whether quotas for political assemblies represent an effective tool for breaking down gender inequality in the political sphere. To put it differently, focus is on the possibilities for policy-makers to engineer equality. As a response to persistent patterns of male dominance in political decision-making, approximately 100 countries, both democratic and authoritarian, have adopted these affirmative action measures.

The introductory section presents an argument as to why we should focus on certain impacts in order to be able to answer the question about the effectiveness of quotas. It suggests that the point of departure for empirical assessments of quota policies should be the normative arguments for supporting the reform, and the effects that normative theorists and quota advocates expect from these measures.

The three studies that make up the core of the thesis build on previous empirical research on quotas, and examine some of their possible effects at both the elite level and mass level. Study I theoretically scrutinizes how the procedures for selecting women to political office shape these women's legislative autonomy, and thereby their possibilities to substantively represent women. The study identifies mainly two factors as important: a large body selecting the candidates and a rule-bound and thus bureaucratized selection procedure.

Study II empirically tests the claim that women elected through quotas are more likely to suffer from institutional constraints in the legislature, and thereby have a harder time working for the benefit of women, than other female representatives. By conducting a comparative case-study of two Mexican state legislatures, no support is found for this hypothesis.

Quotas have also been justified because of their likely impacts on female citizens' perceptions about politics. Study III addresses this issue by performing a statistical analysis on the impacts of quotas on Latin American women's political attitudes and behavior. In contrast to previous research on the topic, the study finds little proof of positive impacts of quotas on women's political engagement.

Taken together, the thesis does not provide a clear-cut answer to the question as to whether it is possible to engineer equality within politics. However, it sheds new light on the complexities of quota impacts, and it qualifies and nuances the picture for those who expect quotas to be an overall solution for problems of gender inequality.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, a rich and varied body of literature has developed that focuses on the way that institutional structures limit women’s substantive representation. Claims have been made that some women legislators are more likely to suffer from institutional constraints than others; those entering legislature via legal gender quotas. Examining two Mexican state legislatures, where only one has adopted legal gender quotas, empirical testing gives no support to the hypothesis; ‘quota women’ do not seem to confront more obstacles than other women. No such negative side effect of quota legislation is identified. Two reasons are put forward; first, dependency on particular leaders is not isolated to quota women but is part of the overall political system. Secondly, the most strident battles occur within political parties for positions of power; hence gender quotas are perceived as a threat mainly to male colleagues within the party. Two key aspects are identified that deserve closer attention in order to gain a more comprehensive picture of the relationship between gender quotas and institutional obstacles to women’s substantive representation: the political agendas raised by quota women and the interplay between different quota provisions and candidate selection rules.

The Dynamic Relationship between Gender Quotas and Political Institutions2013In: Politics & Gender, ISSN 1743-923X, E-ISSN 1743-9248, Vol. 9, no 3, p. 316-321Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Scholars of gender quotas have paid increasing attention to the ways in which formal and informal institutions shape the outcome of this electoral reform (Hassim 2009; Jones 2009; Zetterberg 2009). Quotas, however, are not only affected by the institutional context in which they are adopted; their transformative nature also implies that they (should) contribute to changing political institutions. This dynamic relationship has consequences for the analysis of key institutions within representative democracy: Electoral quotas may, in some cases, challenge well-defined analytical frameworks and established ways to study political life. This essay aims to demonstrate theoretically how quota adoption exerts an impact on established political structures and thus challenges existing understandings within subfields of comparative politics. More specifically, I bring up two institutions within representative democracy that are likely to be affected by quotas: the political recruitment process and intraparty politics within legislative institutions.

    Abstract [en]

Former colonized countries, especially in Africa, have suffered a tough political climate, often under the leadership of a dictator. The process of implementing democracy has, in many states, often been violent and terrifying.

Under these circumstances, it has been hard to build institutions where people feel united as one nation. Poverty, corruption, old cultural and religious boarders and expressions among other circumstances are factors that you have to consider when developing a strong economic and democratic nation.

Women often have a marginalized role within these states. In order to achieve the right to get education, or to be a part of the political arena, they have had to struggle both against men and other women.

Most of Uganda’s income comes from the agriculture. Within this sector there are mostly women working under poor circumstances. To develop female self-employment some of the Swedish aid is given within micro-financial and cooperation projects to improve the economy for the nation and the women’s status within society.

This study could be of importance to see if or how strategically invested aid actually improves the role of women as good recourses for building the nation Uganda. The answers and the conclusions given could also give clues, important for nation building processes in general and for women as nation builders in particular, in the continuing work in building the nation Uganda.

The purpose for this dissertation is to interview women that are participating in two different projects that are supported by Swedish NGOs, in order to see if their own experiences of being part of the projects correspond to the project plans aims.

This dissertation has been made possible through a Minor Field Study Scholarship, financed by SIDA, handled by The International Programme Office for Education and Training, which is a government agency that promotes academic exchanges and cooperation across national borders.

Att lära sig, vad man redan gör?: En kvantitativ studie om två professioners perspektiv på formellt och informellt lärande under vidareutbildning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the nurse and intended psychotherapists perspective on learning in the field between formal learning and informal learning in practice. For this purpose, the nurses that educate further to preschool teachers and intended psychotherapists is examined. The four research questions are as follows; (1) How does the nurses and the intended psychotherapists valuate and experience the relation between formal education and informal learning in practice? (2) How does the nurses and the prospective psychotherapists valuate and experience that their learning changes over time? (3) How does the nurses and the prospective psychotherapists valuate their learning in relation to different persons around them? What differences and common attribute is there between a nurse and a prospective psychotherapist? The empirical collection of the study is based on a survey and the selection covers in total 11 nurses from Stockholm university and 43 intended psychotherapists at Stockholm university and Uppsala university. The study is analyzed through Ellströms theory about cognitive- and contextual perspective on learning, adaptions- and development-minded learning and Bertells theory about learning at the first- and secondhand arena. The study process shows that there are less research made earlier about the investigated professions and their learning during further education, therefore the study is an important contribution to the field of knowledge. The data that the analyzes is founded on in the study is gathered through a web survey. Measures are executed through the software PSPP. It is clear that from the result of the study that the two professions where similar in its positions that treated the relations between formal education and informal learning in practice. It is also possible to interpret that the attitude of the respondents indicates that they are approaching or found themselves in the development-minded learning, which have been addressed in the change of learning over time. Furthermore the result of the study indicates that the respondents learning in relation to others varieties depending on profession and relation. The biggest difference between professions in the study shows when they are to assess in what extent they discuss new knowledge they have learned with their manager. Common features to be seen is that they willingly discuss the new knowledge they learned with their classmates. The study leads to conclusions in respect to semiformal relations. Where the classmates role in the respondents learning is questioned and shown in a another dimension. This with the help of a relative new theoretically point of view.

Customization of Software for Implementation on Third Party Platforms2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An increasingly common scenario in software development, and certainly in webtechnologies, is that companies customize parts of the developed software to run on third party platforms. The purpose of this is often to increase brand recognition or to increase traffic to their websites. Quite often the target platforms are numerous and are far from homogenous while the software itself is required to have preserved functionality in its original environment. This creates numerous difficulties both within the software structure, maintenance and in development routines. This thesis considers some of those difficulties and their potential solutions. Focus is put on an online real estate search company, Booli Search Technologies AB, that would like to offer its partners parts of its platform for implementation on their websites. Booli states both general and specific demands on the customization regarding functionality, preserved performance, security and updates.

The report begins with a survey of literature and related work within the area.Interesting solutions are then discussed and evaluated. Finally, a prototypeimplementation is done and evaluated together with Booli and some of its partners from different aspects. The results are presented together with a discussion and possible future improvements. Overall the prototype implementation satisfies the demands stated by Booli, even though some improvements are suggested.

Even-odd effects in the ionization cross sections of [C60]2 and [C60C70] dimers2007In: Physical Review A. Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, ISSN 1050-2947, E-ISSN 1094-1622, Vol. 75, no 5, p. 051201-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report strong even-odd effects in multiple ionization yields of van der Waals dimers in slowXe30+ + ͓C60͔2͓͑C60C70͔͒ →  ̄ + ͓C60͔2r+͓͑C60C70͔r+͒ electron-transfer collisions as functions of r Յ 7. Thisbehavior may be due to even-odd variations in the sequences of dimer ionization energies as calculated with anelectrostatic model including an electrical fullerene-fullerene contact at the 19a0 center-center separation in͓C60͔2+. Prompt dissociations predominantly yield intact fullerenes ͓C60͔2r+ → C60r1+ + C60r2+ in the same͑r1 = r2, even r͒ or nearby ͑r1 = r2 ± 1, odd r Ͼ 1͒ charge states.

Stabilities of multiply charged dimers and clusters of fullerenes2007In: Journal of Chemical Physics, ISSN 0021-9606, E-ISSN 1089-7690, Vol. 126, no 22, p. 224303-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The authors find even-odd variations as functions of r (...+[C60]2(r+)([C60C70](r+)) electron-transfer collisions. This even-odd behavior is in sharp contrast to the smooth one for fullerene monomers and may be related to even-odd effects in dimer ionization energies in agreement with results from an electrostatic model. The kinetic energy releases for dimer dissociations [predominantly yielding intact fullerenes [C60]2(r+)-->C60(r1+)+C60(r2+) in the same (r1=r2) or nearby (r1=r2+/-1) charge states] are found to be low in comparison with the corresponding model results indicating that internal excitations of the separating (intact) fullerenes are important. Experimental appearance sizes for the heavier clusters of fullerenes [C60]n(r+) (n>3 and r=2-5) compare well with predictions from a new nearest-neighbor model assuming that r unit charges in [C60]n(r+) are localized to r C60 molecules such that the Coulomb energy of the system is minimized. The system is then taken to be stable if (i) two (singly) charged C60 are not nearest neighbors and (ii) the r C60(+) molecules have binding energies to their neutral nearest neighbors which are larger than the repulsive energies for the (r-1) C60(+)-C60(+) pairs. Essential ingredients in the nearest-neighbor model are cluster geometries and the present results on dimer stabilities.

Responsibility failure or too high expectations?: From humanitarian crisis to legal dispute in cholera-struck Haiti2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti 2010 a second disaster hit the small Caribbean country. This time in the shape of a cholera epidemic, imported by Nepalese UN soldiers. The disease outbreak culminated in a previously unpresented lawsuit against the United Nations in which their principle of absolute immunity was questioned. This study highlights the complex causal paths that preceded the legal dispute, by investigating three hypotheses on why the controversy with the UN got out of hand and could not be resolved through other means. The findings imply that the framing of the Haitian state as fragile and corrupt led to a shift in the perception of responsibilities. As the government was rendered incapable, international organizations were expected to provide health and well-being to the Haitian people. This however proved to be an expectation they could not live up to. The case of Haiti illustrates a good example of the difficulties in the delivery of large-scale humanitarian aid and how this can undermine existing institutions if implemented unwisely.
